   I need to be able to display news headlines for "Today" only.
   Can I filter out all other posts and display only todays date.

   Unless you have a predictable number of posts per day and can use the quantity to do this, I don't think so. The reason is that there is not a conditional operator in the template system. You can do substitutions, but I don't think that'll give you the power you need.
