The horrific trafficking of intimate partners. An homage to Pitchfork. Memories of a childhood spent in a Kentucky kitchen. Risking lives for extreme skiing. And why we need to calm down about UFOs.

1. The Venture

Christopher Johnston and Erin Quinlan | Cosmopolitan | January 30, 2024 | 3,899 words

When someone first suggested that her boyfriend might be trafficking her, Kayla Goedinghaus was incredulous. She was being abused—beaten, drugged, denied money—but trafficked? In time, as Christopher Johnston and Erin Quinlan detail in this gripping story, Goedinghaus came to understand the truth about her situation, which was far from unusual. “As of 2020, an estimated 39 percent of sex-trafficking victims in this country were brought into it by intimate partners,” Johnston and Quinlan write. “Through physical force, manipulation, or fraud, those victims are compelled to engage in sex acts for the trafficker’s benefit. That could mean posing for nudes he secretly sells to cover his gambling debts or sleeping with random men off the street so he can score drugs or letting the landlord watch sex acts through the bedroom window as a form of rent payment.” In Goedinghaus’s case, her boyfriend, Rick, was peddling her as a commodity among his friends, who allegedly included powerful men such as Trammell Crow Jr., an heir to a massive real-estate fortune (and brother to Harlan Crow, the conservative donor who’s been bankrolling Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s lifestyle for years). This piece, then, serves as a corrective to widespread assumptions about trafficking, including who perpetrates it and who is hurt by it. Narratively speaking, the story’s crux is an unlikely friendship. Before Goedinghaus, Rick trafficked his ex-wife, Julia Hubbard, and the two women encountering each other changed everything—indeed, it made this feature possible. “Setting eyes on each other for the first time,” Johnston and Quinlan write, “Julia and Kayla were zapped with an eerie sense of mutual recognition, as though they were standing on opposite sides of a looking glass: Kayla as the new Julia and Julia as the former Kayla. They even looked alike.” —SD

2. A Notorious Pitchfork Reviewer Was My Biggest Musical Influence

Dan McQuade | Defector | January 31, 2024 | 2,944 words

I’ve always loved music. I grew up recording music videos set to New Edition, Salt-N-Pepa, and Bel Biv Devoe on VHS with my cousins, and listening to ’80s hip-hop in the tiny back seat of my older brother’s Porsche 914 convertible while he and a friend “cruised for babes.” Bay Area radio stations LIVE 105 and KOME taught me about grunge and alternative rock, and my first underground rave opened the door to a whole new world. In the ’90s, I wasn’t yet reading about music online, still relying on my local Tower Records to discover it: as a customer, combing through new releases and reading issues of Urb and NME, and later as an employee, obsessively organizing its modest “Dance/Electronica” selection and getting recommendations from my coworkers. But I don’t know much about music; I have no formal music education (except for a brief dalliance with the violin) and have certainly never felt confident enough to write about it. So I was drawn to Dan McQuade’s thoughts on Pitchfork, the music publication Condé Nast announced would be folded into GQ. Right at the start, McQuade states that he, too, doesn’t know much about music. But Pitchfork, especially in its early years, helped to fill in the gaps. His writing resonates with me: it’s personal, funny but not snarky, and comes from the heart. He reflects on how Pitchfork’s reviews had influenced him, particularly those of music critic James P. Wisdom. How the site had been a champion of electronic music since the ’90s. And how, in a very ’00s bloggy way, it was an outlet for people to review music but also to express themselves in the process, freely and irreverently, about things they cared about. “Pitchfork not only gave me bands to listen to, but told me how I might think about them,” he writes. Wisdom also puts it nicely, saying that “contextualizing and humanizing how we find and explore music is valuable.” A lovely essay and stroll down memory lane, with links to fun archived reviews. (And +1 for the playlist inspiration: I now have Moby on rotation nonstop.) —CLR

3. Tasting Indian Creek

Crystal Wilkinson | Oxford American | January 23, 2024 | 3,409 words

In this wonderful book excerpt from Praisesong for the Kitchen Ghosts, Crystal Wilkinson serves up memories of her childhood in Black Appalachia, spent with Granny Christine in their Kentucky kitchen. This piece is more than mere memoir; Wilkinson reflects on roots that run deep and close, the hefty domestic contribution women make, and preservation as a labor of love. For Wilkinson, recipes transcend ingredients and instructions to prepare a dish. They’re stories imbued with wisdom and experience handed down and across generations from ancestors that remain present in spirit, supervising each new iteration of Granny’s jam cake. “In the corner of my grandmother’s kitchen, spirits shimmered near the bucket of well water, hovered over the olive refrigerator, floated above the flour sifter, and glided around the coal-burning stove,” she writes. Granny Christine’s cake recipe—written in “her perfect cursive” and reproduced in full in the piece—is an incantation that conjures home for Wilkinson: “3 sticks of butter, 2 cups sugar, 2 cups flour, 6 eggs …” Take the time to whisper that recipe to yourself and feel full, emotionally. Needless to say this piece was deeply satisfying; I savored it from beginning to end. —KS

4. Precipice of Fear: the Freerider Who Took Skiing to its Limits

The Guardian | Simon Akam | January 30, 2024 | 5,932 words

I love to ski. Well, I love to ski on a nice clear day, on a nice clear run. Anything too steep or too icy, and I am edging down that slope inch by inch, brow deeply furrowed, sweat beading, pole dragging behind me (as if that would stop me). I am in awe of people like Jérémie Heitz, who can sweep down an impossible cliff face with such grace it becomes poetry, poles firmly up front and part of a fluid, gliding movement. Heitz’s specialty is at the extreme end of professional freeriding—his descents are so steep the gradient is twice that of some “expert” ski resort terrain. Simon Akam describes these icy peaks so vividly I could feel my heart pounding in my mouth as “Heitz slid sideways down the first few meters, made a turn, and then cut down onto the highest grey smear of ice.” He is committed to his reporting—even skiing with Heitz and completing some terrifying runs himself. But this piece is more than a litany of daredevil feats: it’s a reflection on the nature of extreme sports and the sponsors who support them. Heitz has lost 20 friends—normal in this world. Can that ever be worth it? —CW

5. How We Lost Our Minds About UFOs

Nicholson Baker | New York | January 31, 2024 | 6,751 words

Close Encounters of the Third Kind filled me with wonder as a kid, and an ’80s childhood provided no shortage of material to keep that wonder alive: Flight of the NavigatorThe Last StarfighterE.T. But despite being primed to believe, I’ve never been able to fully accept any of the countless UFO sightings and reports that have emerged over the decades. I never knew why, only that it all felt … vague. And then I read Nicholson Baker’s lively, informed takedown in New YorkOh, I thought. Duh. Regardless of where you land on the believer spectrum, there’s a lot to like here. (Well, maybe not for the full-throated evangelists like Avi Loeb, who claims skeptics and critics “behave like terrorists.”) Baker’s stance is clear from the get go, but his fiction career serves him well, leavening his skepticism with crackling phrases like “wiggy-sounding.” He’s dismissing, but not dismissive, which can be a tough needle to thread. He reports generously, not simply combing through archives but connecting with many of today’s ufology luminaries. None of that, though, shakes his well-grounded thesis: our entire flying-saucer mythology is derived from Cold War weapons research, carried out via high-tech balloons. Sure, I’ll still wonder about what might be out there—hell, it’s logically impossible to think we’re the only sentient lifeforms around—but until there’s something a little more undeniable, I’ll be living on Baker Street. —PR

The Birth of My Daughter, the Death of My Marriage

Leslie Jamison | The New Yorker | January 15, 2024 | 7,126 words

In this excerpt of her forthcoming book, Splinters: Another Kind of Love Story, Leslie Jamison recounts the early months of her daughter’s life. During that period, Jamison juggled a book tour, a teaching career, and the demands of a newborn—amid the growing realization that she wanted to leave her marriage. —KS

» Xiaomi 14 Ultra could be more expensive than its predecessor
02/02/24 09:58 from Feedbin Starred Entries for mark.adamenko@gmail.com

AH Xiaomi 13 Ultra image 20

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra is expected to arrive in the coming months, and it will seemingly be more expensive than its predecessor. This information comes from a very reliable source, actually. Digital Chat Station shared the info, one of China’s most accurate tipsters.

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra will be more expensive than its predecessor

He says that the Bill of Materials (BOM) estimation indicates a price increase. The BOM has increased for more than CNY700 ($100), so we can expect the Xiaomi 14 Ultra to get a price hike.

The tipster also confirmed that we’ll get a quad camera setup on the back, with Leica optics. The phone will also include Xiaomi’s self-research tech, and that goes for communications, materials, batteries, and more

We don’t know when exactly is the phone coming, but it’s coming in the next couple of months based on everything we’ve seen thus far. Its specifications have been rumored quite a few times thus far.

Four 50MP cameras are expected, while the main one will support multi-stop variable aperture

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is expected to fuel the device. Four 50-megapixel cameras are rumored. The main unit will be the Sony LYT-900, allegedly, and it will offer a multi-stop variable aperture (f/1.63-f/4.0).

A 5,180mAh battery is also rumored, while the phone is said to offer 90W wired and 50W wireless charging support. Yes, a charger will be included in the package, in case you were wondering.

An in-display fingerprint scanner is expected, and it will be an ultrasonic one. Xiaomi stuck to optical in-display fingerprint scanners thus far, but that will likely change with the Xiaomi 14 Ultra.

A large AMOLED display is also expected with a 120Hz refresh rate. Yes, that will be an LTPO panel with an adaptive refresh rate. Android 14 will likely come pre-installed, with Xiaomi’s HyperOS on top of it.

» Ulefone Note 17 Pro is the company's first OLED flagship
02/02/24 08:21 from Feedbin Starred Entries for mark.adamenko@gmail.com

Ulefone Note 17 Pro image 1

The Ulefone Note 17 Pro is now official, and the company refers to it as its “first OLED flagship”. Ulefone says that this phone marks two firsts for the ‘Note’ lineup. It’s the first ‘Note’ phone with a curved display and the first ‘Note’ device with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

The Ulefone Note 17 Pro is not one of the company’s rugged smartphones

Ulefone mainly announces rugged phones which are a part of its ‘Armor’ series. The ‘Note’ series represents more regular phones from the company. The Ulefone Note 17 Pro has a centered display camera hole, rather thin bezels, and two cameras on the back. Those cameras are separated across two camera islands. Both of them sit in the top-left corner.

This smartphone comes in three colors, Amber Orange, Pearl White, and Velvet Black. The device is fueled by the MediaTek Helio G99 processor. It also comes with 12GB of RAM, which can be expanded via virtual RAM for an additional 12GB. Ulefone placed 256GB of storage inside as well.

It has a large 120Hz OLED display, and a 108MP main camera

There is a large 6.78-inch fullHD+ AMOLED display in use here. This display has a resolution of 2400 x 1080 and a refresh rate of 120Hz. It also has an average brightness of 500 nits. That panel is protected by the Gorilla Glass 5.

A 108-megapixel main camera (Samsung’s HM2 sensor, f/1.89 aperture, 6P lens) is used here. In addition to that, you’ll also find a 5-megapixel macro camera (f/2.2 aperture) on the back of this phone. A single 32-megapixel unit (f/2.5 aperture) is used on the front side of the phone.

A large battery is included, and 33W wired charging supported

Ulefone decided to use a 5,050mAh battery here. The phone supports 33W wired charging, and it does come with a charger in the box. It also has an optical in-display fingerprint scanner, while face unlock is also supported via the front-facing camera.

This phone has two SIM card slots (2x nano SIM), and supports 4G connectivity. Android 13 comes pre-installed on the phone, while Bluetooth 5.2 is also supported here. Ulefone did also include a TPU case in the retail box, by the way.

The Ulefone Note 17 Pro is currently available to pre-order, in case you’re interested. Apply the coupon code ‘N17P2024’, and you can get it for a pre-sale price of $279.99. Ulefone is also hosting a giveaway via Facebook. All the necessary links are included below.

» Analysts revamp interest rate targets following Fed meeting
02/02/24 00:31 from Feedbin Starred Entries for mark.adamenko@gmail.com

With all the Federal Reserve dominating the news lately, some of you may be tempted to ask, "Fed, Shmed, what's all this got to do with me?"

Well, if you're planning to buy a house or a car, then the Fed's handling of interest rates has a lot to do with you.

The federal funds rate impacts monetary and financial conditions, which in turn have a bearing on critical aspects of the broader economy, including employment, growth, and inflation.

"When inflation is too high, the Federal Reserve typically raises interest rates to slow the economy and bring inflation down," the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland said on its website. "When inflation is too low, the Federal Reserve typically lowers interest rates to stimulate the economy and move inflation higher."

Higher interest rates mean higher borrowing costs, and people will eventually start spending less.

The Fed sees a rate of inflation of 2% per year—as measured by the price index for personal consumption expenditures—as the right amount of inflation.

Jerome Powell, chairman of the US Federal Reserve, recently outlined plans for interest rates in 2024.

Bloomberg/Getty Images

Looking for strong labor market

On Jan. 31, the Fed held its key interest rate steady for a fourth consecutive meeting, confirming market forecasts. Still, the central bank pushed back on the chances of a spring rate cut, warning that inflation remains elevated.

The Federal Open Market Committee held its key policy rate at between 5.25% and 5.5%, the highest in 22 years.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell sent shockwaves through the market by effectively ruling out the chances of a March rate cut, citing stubbornly high inflation and a resilient job market.

“It’s still a good labor market for wages and for finding a job. But it’s getting back into balance. And that’s what we want to see,” Powell said. “We want to see a strong labor market. We’re not looking for a weaker labor market.”

Traders are now pricing in a 38.5% chance that the Fed begins the first of its three projected rate cuts in March, according to the CME Group's FedWatch. One month ago, the odds of a cut were 73%.

“We could hem and haw, jawbone if you will, about the perceived tea leaf reading we all just did for the last 45 minutes or so, but the only thing that matters is the idea that a March rate cut is ‘unlikely,’” said Alex McGrath, chief investment officer for NorthEnd Private Wealth. “The Market certainly did not see that coming inducing the ye olde rug pull post FOMC presser.”

Stocks fell after Powell made his comments but bounced back on Feb. 1.

'Not a big surprise,' analyst says

Goldman Sachs pushed back its expectation of the Fed starting to cut interest rates to May from March after Powell's comments.

The firm maintained its forecast of five 25 basis points rate cuts this year and expects four consecutive cuts from May through September and a final cut in December.

"It is not a big surprise that the Fed isn't rushing to cut rates," said Real Money Pro's James "Rev Shark" DePorre, "but the market has consistently been more dovish than the Fed and has been hanging on to hope that a series of cuts will begin in March."

The Fed chair's comments disappointed the hopeful bulls, DePorre said, "but this was not a hawkish Fed decision."

"Powell was upbeat and positive about the economy and the progress that has been made on inflation," he said.

Bill Adams, the chief economist for Comerica Bank, said that many Federal Open Markets Committee members likely think a rate cut might be appropriate by March when the FOMC will have nearly two more months of economic data in hand than they did today.

"But a significant minority of members are probably less confident that inflation is on a sustainable downward trajectory," he said.

"Also, some FOMC members likely believe inflation is on its way back to target, but want to push back against buoyant financial market conditions--high stock market prices, narrow credit spreads in the bond market--that make the Fed’s high policy rate less restrictive to growth than it otherwise would be," Adams said.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max vs OnePlus 12: Design

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is made out of titanium and glass. It has flat sides all around, with slightly curved edges. The OnePlus 12, on the other hand, is made out of aluminum and glass, and it’s considerably more curvy than the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple’s flagship has a flat display and a pill-shaped camera cutout on the front. OnePlus’ offering includes a curved display, and a centered display camera hole, a single one.

On the back, both devices have three cameras. The iPhone 15 Pro Max has its recognizable camera layout in the top-left corner. The OnePlus 12’s camera island sits in a similar spot, and it looks reminiscent of what the OnePlus 11 offered, design-wise. Apple’s power/lock button sits on the right-hand side, while the volume up and down buttons are on the left, along with an Action Button. The OnePlus 12 includes physical buttons on the right side, while the alert slider sits on the left.

The in-hand feel is completely different in comparison, but both devices are quite slippery. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is a bit shorter and a bit wider, while it’s also a bit thinner. They weigh almost the same, there’s only a 1-gram difference between them. Both smartphones come with an IP certification for water and dust resistance. The iPhone 15 Pro Max offers IP68 certification, while the OnePlus 12 has IP65 certification. Both devices are immensely slippery in the hand, so using a case could be a good idea. They do feel great to hold and use, though, very premium.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max vs OnePlus 12: Display

Apple’s flagship features a 6.7-inch 2796 x 1290 LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED display. That panel is flat, and it offers an adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz. Dolby Vision is supported, as is HDR10 content. This panel goes up to 2,000 nits of theoretical brightness, and it has a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Apple is using the Ceramic Shield glass in order to protect the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s display.

OnePlus 12

The OnePlus 12, on the other hand, features a larger 6.82-inch QHD+ (3168 x 1440) LTPO AMOLED display. Its display is curved, and it can project up to 1 billion colors. It also has an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, and Dolby Vision is supported. HDR10+ content is also supported, while this panel has a theoretical display brightness of 4,500 nits. It is protected by the Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

When it comes to displays, there’s really not much to complain about on either side. Both displays are bright, vivid, and have great viewing angles. They also have those deep blacks we’re used to in AMOLED displays. The OnePlus 12’s panel does technically get brighter, but both panels are bright enough, even outdoors in direct sunlight. The touch response is also good on both. You can’t go wrong here, it’s only a matter of preference between flat and curved panels.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max vs OnePlus 12: Performance

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is fueled by the Apple A17 Pro processor. That 3nm chip is backed by 8GB of RAM and NVMe flash storage. The OnePlus 12 includes a 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, along with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM (up to 24GB in China), and UFS 4.0 flash storage is also included here. They’re both quite powerful from the hardware standpoint, and that does show on the performance side of things too.

Both smartphones do a great job in regular, day-to-day performance. They’re immensely smooth with great animations. Jumping between apps is very fluid, apps load fast, and all actions ranging from browsing the internet to processing images and video can be done without a hitch. Both software iterations are well-optimized, and albeit completely different, both offer great performance.

What about gaming? Well, the same can be said for gaming, actually. Both of these phones can tackle anything you throw their way, though it’s worth noting that the OnePlus 12 has a huge vapor chamber, and does stay cooler during longer gaming sessions. They both can tackle any game you’ll find in their respective app stores, though, and on the highest possible settings, so no worries there. These are actually some of the best-performing smartphones on the market at the moment.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max vs OnePlus 12: Battery

Apple’s flagship has a 4,441mAh battery on the inside, while the OnePlus 12 comes with a 5,400mAh battery pack. Apple’s iPhones usually have smaller batteries, but the OnePlus 12 actually has an unusually larger battery for its form factor. OnePlus did a great job fitting it in there, as many people expected a 5,000mAh battery pack at first. Both devices do offer great battery life, but the OnePlus 12 is a level above the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

What is interesting is that the iPhone 15 Pro Max lasted longer in our battery drain test, a bit longer. However, the OnePlus 12 offered more in day-to-day performance in terms of screen-on-time. The iPhone 15 Pro Max managed to cross the 8-hour screen-on-time regularly, while the OnePlus 12 beat that with over 9 hours of screen-on-time on a regular basis. Do note that gaming was not a part of usage on almost all days, as we did that only for testing. The phones were used for various other tasks, though. Either way, both of these smartphones managed to reach those levels, and still have some battery juice left in the tank. You will be happy with battery life on both of them, that’s for sure

When it comes to charging, the OnePlus 12 has a huge advantage. It supports 100W wired (80W in the US), 50W wireless, and 10W reverse wireless charging. It also comes with a charger in the box. The iPhone 15 Pro Max, on the other hand, supports 20W wired, 15W MagSafe and Qi2 wireless, 7.5W Qi wireless, and 4.5W reverse wired charging. Not only does it have much slower wired and wireless charging, but its reverse charging is slower, and it doesn’t come with a charger in the box.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max vs OnePlus 12: Cameras

There is a 48-megapixel main camera included inside the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The phone also has a 12-megapixel ultrawide unit (120-degree FoV), and a 12-megapixel periscope telephoto camera (5x optical zoom). The OnePlus 12 features a 50-megapixel main camera, a 48-megapixel ultrawide unit (114-degree FoV), and a 64-megapixel periscope telephoto camera (3x optical zoom).

iphone 15 pro max AM AH 25
Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

Both smartphones do provide great results, and quite frankly, there is no clear winner here. They trade blows based on the scene they’re capturing. During the day, they provide very detailed images that pop, and the HDR situations are also handled with ease. We preferred the colors that the OnePlus 12 provided most of the time, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max images were warmer more often than not. Their ultrawide cameras do a great job of keeping the color palette of their main cameras, and both do a great job. The periscope telephoto cameras do a great job on both sides, and trade blows depending on the scene and how far you’re zooming in. The OnePlus 12 mostly does better at 3x and 4x, while the iPhone usually comes on top at 5-10x zoom ranges. As I said, that’s not the rule.

In low light, both do a great job but provide different images. The iPhone 15 Pro Max tends to offer images that are a bit brighter, while the OnePlus 12 images are usually more contrasty, and closer to real life. Both smartphones do a great job of capturing details in low light. The main cameras do perform the best in such scenarios, but other cameras are also usable in low light, definitely.

Audio

You will find a set of stereo speakers on both of these phones. The ones that the iPhone 15 Pro Max provides do get a bit louder at the highest of volumes, but both sets are very good in general. They’re well-balanced and are pleasant to listen to.

There is no audio jack here, on either phone. They do have Type-C ports that you can utilize to connect your headphones via a wire. If you prefer to go wireless, the iPhone 15 Pro Max offers Bluetooth 5.3, while the OnePlus 12 comes with Bluetooth 5.4.

» The Pixel 8 now has the Circle to Search feature

AH Pixel 8 Circle To Search

The Circle to Search feature that Google announced back in January has started to roll out to the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. If you have either one of these devices, then you should be able to use it as a means for searching for more information about content on-screen.

You can use it virtually anywhere. No matter what you’re browsing or what you’re doing on the phone. Once you circle something, Google will populate a box on-screen that surrounds the item or words you circled. The results of the search then pop up in a panel from the bottom of the screen.

Circle to Search on Pixel 8 makes for easy and intuitive searching for everything

Google’s Circle to Search feature is intended to give users a quicker, more intuitive way to gather information about stuff. And it can be a super fast method for finding additional information about products. Say you’re at the grocery store and you see an item you want to know more about. You can simply take a photo of the item, then open that photo and circle it to search for information. Super easy and relatively fast. To use the feature you do have to activate it but that doesn’t take much effort.

You can activate it in two ways. Either long press on the nav handle at the bottom if you’re using gesture navigation, or long press on the home button if you’re using the three-button navigation. This brings up the circle to search overlay where you can circle or tap the area you want to search. You can also draw a line over the area you’re searching and that works too.

Additionally, it’s possible to add text to the search and potentially more precise results. If you circle to search for something and you don’t get the results you were looking for, you can easily resize the box that pops up and drag it around to see if the results change too. You can use this feature to highlight text as well. To do this, activate circle to search and then tap on or draw a line over any text you want to highlight. Google also makes it possible to scroll around the page to look at something else by using two fingers to scroll around.

This feature began rolling out to Pixel 8 devices on January 31. So there’s a good chance you have access to it already. Google does like to roll things out in waves though so don’t be too surprised if it isn’t active on your device yet.

» An ‘absolutely perfect’ Amazon space heater has just been purchased over 40,000 times, and it only costs $24
02/02/24 00:30 from Feedbin Starred Entries for mark.adamenko@gmail.com

TheStreet aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

We’re starting to approach the time of year when the temperature outside can vary wildly, meaning that our indoor temperatures might just do the same — and for that, space heaters can come in handy as a great alternative to having to turn on the heat for the entire house. One of Amazon’s most popular space heater picks, the Aikoper Space Heater, has just been purchased more than 40,000 times in the past month — yet it’s still just $24 after a 20% discount for Prime subscribers.

This space heater has garnered a whopping 15,000 five-star ratings, with shoppers calling it “small but mighty.” It just needs an outlet to plug into, so it’s simple to set up and can follow you around the house as needed, whether you’re working in the office or kicking back by the TV.

Courtesy of Amazon

Get it.

Shoppers call this easy-to-use space heater “absolutely perfect” for heating up the individual rooms and smaller spaces in their homes, thanks to a user-friendly control panel and powerful-for-its-size output. One shopper, a self-described “always cold” person, says that her purchase has been perfect for heating a small room.

Shoppers also really love the space heater’s safety features: They say that if it’s not sitting level it simply won’t run — and if it gets knocked over, or if any part of the machine shows signs of overheating, the shut-off feature “immediately” kicks on.

It’ll save you money by not forcing you to turn on your central heating, too — one shopper, who is buying her third one, said that it “definitely helped save on our heating bill last winter and this year [as] well.” Plus, it can take those savings even further by reliably shutting off the heat once the air in the room surrounding it reaches the same temperature you’ve programmed on the dials.

Instead of freezing the rest of the winter — or shivering through another evening of Netflix — get cozy by adding one (or two!) of these Aikoper Space Heaters to your carts.

» How We Lost Our Minds About UFOs
01/02/24 23:00 from Feedbin Starred Entries for mark.adamenko@gmail.com

Attention, ufologists: Nicholson Baker regrets to inform you that your entire movement is easily debunked by investigating Cold War history. At least he eviscerates your extraterrestrial dreams with good cheer and good writing. And he suggests that you bring some proof beyond grainy footage and anonymous sources.

I never got into UFOs. I loved science fiction as a kid, enjoyed buglike space monsters as much as the next person, and in 1967 I read Bill Adler’s book Letters to the Air Force on UFOs with fascination and delight, but the actual documentary evidence on offer has always seemed poor. And the abduction stories, which reached a peak in the late ’80s, were just nuts. Not until recently, though, when I worked on a book about secret Cold War weapons research, did I begin to understand how the saucer madness got started.

» Microsoft 365 apps are coming to Apple Vision Pro at the right time
01/02/24 22:51 from Feedbin Starred Entries for mark.adamenko@gmail.com

Microsoft 365 Apple Vision Pro

Apple’s biggest launch in a long time, the Vision Pro, is releasing in a few hours, right on schedule. Priced at $3,499, it is exclusively available in the United States. Even at that price, one report suggests that over 200,000 units have already been pre-ordered. Perhaps, at the same time, Microsoft has announced its share of wishes to Apple as it launches its suite of Microsoft 365 apps on the App Store for Apple Vision Pro.

Microsoft 365 apps landing soon on Apple Vision Pro

Microsoft has announced “some exciting news” that Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, OneNote, and Loop are coming to the App Store for Apple Vision Pro on its launch day i.e., Friday (February 2nd). This means that Apple Vision Pro users can download and use the Microsoft 365 apps as soon as they bring home the big-budget Apple’s “mixed reality” headset.

It’s noteworthy that Apple has long called its Vision Pro “an ideal productivity tool,” and Microsoft 365 apps are synonymous with the term. So, it’s no surprise that they’re coming. More importantly, Apple Vision Pro users will be able to use an AI-powered Copilot on the headset. This means they could do things like making drafts, summarizing documents, and creating PowerPoint presentations just by using voice.

Microsoft Word Apple Vision Pro

How’d the experience be while using Microsoft apps on Apple Vision Pro?

Well, we don’t know yet but the initial feedback on the Apple Vision Pro seems mostly positive. However, there are concerns about its weight and discomfort during prolonged wear. According to CNET, Apple Vision Pro is well-suited for tasks like using it as a work computer and enjoying movies.

Microsoft talks about a focus mode in Word. This will help users avoid distractions or fully focus on completing an overdue assignment. With Teams, your digital avatar can join work meetings, adding a personal touch. PowerPoint offers a special environment for practicing presentations in front of a virtual audience. In Excel, you can easily move documents to other apps by using the headset’s pinch and drag feature.
