I want faster updates. I understand this should come with an upgrade from free to basic. The account page comes with messages saying that upgrades are not available, and I understand from older posts that this situation has been going on for a while. What is the problem? Can I get an upgrade anyway?

Sure, you're now up a level on a trial basis (3 months). You can then renew in the usual way.
