» Amazon may be leaping forward in building its in-house Vega OS In November last year, we reported that Amazon might be working on plans to ditch Android and instead develop its in-house Vega OS. Well, the report turns out to be true. At least, if a recent Amazon job listing is to be believed. It also suggests that something is brewing in the Seattle headquarters. First spotted by AFTVnews, Amazon posted a Berlin-based job, looking for a Fire TV Experience Software Development Engineer on January 29. However, if you visit the link to the job on the platform, you’ll see that it no longer exists. The job description clearly stated that the main part of the job is to help shift from Android to the rumored “Vega OS.” Amazon explicitly mentions this transition from “FOS/Android,” where FOS stands for Fire OS, to “native/Rust” and React Native for Fire TV. Last year, reports surfaced that Amazon Echo Show 5 has switched to a new system, leaving its Android system behind. We don’t have the exact date for this change. But it’s clear that Amazon is putting a lot of effort into making this switch. The report also suggests that Amazon may not update current Fire TV devices to the rumored “Vega OS”. Instead, it will introduce new models with this system. Amazon is not the only one ditching Android for its in-house operating system. In recent times, brands like Huawei and Vivo have also moved away from Android. For instance, Huawei has released HarmonyOS, and Vivo has come up with BlueOS in its homeland, China. The good part is that there may be a lot of improvements in the in-house operating systems, and the sad part is that these operating systems will not support Android apps. This is because there are millions of Android apps available on the Play Store across categories. And that may not be the case with newborn operating systems, let alone the apps available on third-party stores. Durkin brings the latest business headlines from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange as markets close for trading Thursday, February 1. J.D. DURKIN: I’m J.D. Durkin - reporting from the New York Stock Exchange. Here’s what we’re watching on TheStreet today. Stocks were in the green to close out today's session. The Dow closed up over 350 points, the Nasdaq closed up 1.3 percent, and the S&P closed 1.2 percent higher. This comes as investors continue to react to the Fed holding interest rates steady while indicating that a March rate cut would be unlikely. Markets are now pricing in a 38 percent chance of a rate cut in March. Separately, investors are looking ahead to the January jobs report out Friday. Wall Street is expecting the U.S. economy to have added 176,500 jobs last month, with the unemployment rate rising to 3.8 percent. In other news - we know that layoffs have been top of mind in the business world to start 2024, but now we know just how bad it's been. According to a new report by global outplacement firm Challenger, Gray, and Christmas - layoffs in January increased by 136 percent from the month prior. In total, 82,307 workers were let go by U.S.-based employers in the first month of the year, marking the highest number of January layoffs since 2009. In addition to questions around interest rates and 2024 being an election year, the report says these layoffs are also driven by "broader economic trends and a strategic shift towards increased automation and AI adoption in various sectors, though in most cases, companies point to cost-cutting as the main driver for layoffs." The financial sector saw more layoffs than any other industry with 23,238 workers laid off. That was followed by the tech sector with almost 16,000 layoffs, and the food production industry which had roughly 6,660 workers let go. When asked why employees were being laid off, restructuring was the number one response given by employers. And if you’re worried about AI coming for your job, keep in mind that artificial intelligence was blamed for less than one percent of the January layoffs. That’ll do it for your daily briefing. This information comes from a very reliable source, actually. Digital Chat Station shared the info, one of China’s most accurate tipsters. He says that the Bill of Materials (BOM) estimation indicates a price increase. The BOM has increased for more than CNY700 ($100), so we can expect the Xiaomi 14 Ultra to get a price hike. The tipster also confirmed that we’ll get a quad camera setup on the back, with Leica optics. The phone will also include Xiaomi’s self-research tech, and that goes for communications, materials, batteries, and more We don’t know when exactly is the phone coming, but it’s coming in the next couple of months based on everything we’ve seen thus far. Its specifications have been rumored quite a few times thus far. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is expected to fuel the device. Four 50-megapixel cameras are rumored. The main unit will be the Sony LYT-900, allegedly, and it will offer a multi-stop variable aperture (f/1.63-f/4.0). A 5,180mAh battery is also rumored, while the phone is said to offer 90W wired and 50W wireless charging support. Yes, a charger will be included in the package, in case you were wondering. An in-display fingerprint scanner is expected, and it will be an ultrasonic one. Xiaomi stuck to optical in-display fingerprint scanners thus far, but that will likely change with the Xiaomi 14 Ultra. A large AMOLED display is also expected with a 120Hz refresh rate. Perhaps, at the same time, Microsoft has announced its share of wishes to Apple as it launches its suite of Microsoft 365 apps on the App Store for Apple Vision Pro. Microsoft has announced “some exciting news” that Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, OneNote, and Loop are coming to the App Store for Apple Vision Pro on its launch day i.e., Friday (February 2nd). This means that Apple Vision Pro users can download and use the Microsoft 365 apps as soon as they bring home the big-budget Apple’s “mixed reality” headset. It’s noteworthy that Apple has long called its Vision Pro “an ideal productivity tool,” and Microsoft 365 apps are synonymous with the term. So, it’s no surprise that they’re coming. More importantly, Apple Vision Pro users will be able to use an AI-powered Copilot on the headset. » Analysts unveil new Google stock price targets after earnings On Sept. 4, 1998, computer scientists Larry Page and Sergey Brin took a research project that they had been working on for two years and turned it into a company. And they called it Google. Their project, which would later become a subsidiary of Alphabet (GOOGL) - Get Free Report, became the most popular search engine in the world, capturing roughly 92% of the market. So much has changed since those final years of the 20th Century. Now, we live in a world where artificial intelligence has moved from science fiction to reality, and companies are competing fiercely for a place in this new landscape. How this landscape will evolve remains to be seen, but optimism that Alphabet will be a major player helped its shares surge 31% in the past year. That's great, but it's been tougher sledding for investors recently. After Google reported fourth-quarter earnings, shares fell by 7%, causing many to wonder what could happen next. Google, a member of the so-called "Magnificent Seven," a basket of tech stocks that includes a who's who of big-time players such as Apple, Microsoft, and Nvidia, posted fourth-quarter earnings on Jan. 30. The company reported adjusted earnings of $1.64 per share, up from $1.05 a year earlier, and beating Wall Street's forecast of $1.59 per share. Revenue totaled $86.3 billion, up from $76.1 billion last year and ahead of the expected $85.33 billion. Ad revenue came to $65.52 billion, short of analysts’ estimates of $65.94 billion. While the numbers overall looked good, investors were disappointed with ad revenue and increased spending, including rising AI costs. "Our results reflect strong momentum and product innovation continuing into 2024," CEO Sundar Pichai told analysts during the company's earnings call. "Last year brought new excitement around gen AI, and I'm proud of how we responded responsibly with deep advances in foundation models and a number of great launches." Related: What Apple’s stock does after earnings may hinge on this key opportunity Alphabet's capital expenditure surged 45% to $11 billion, and Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat said that capital expenditures would be notably larger this year than in 2023. She said the CapEx spending will be driven "overwhelmingly by investment in our technical infrastructure with the largest component for servers followed by data centers." Porat also said that Alphabet would incur $700 million in severance-related costs in the first quarter. Last month, Google laid off a thousand workers in its hardware, voice-assistance, and engineering teams as part of cost-cutting measures. Early last year, the company cut about 6% of its workforce, or 12,000 positions, marking the largest layoff round in its history. At the time, Google said it was “responsibly investing in our company’s biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead.” Redburn Atlantic analyst James Cordwell, who boosted his price target on Alphabet to $165 from $150 and kept a buy rating on the shares, said that the company's results were robust at an aggregate level. However, he said, investor focus is likely to be on the fact that Search growth was only in line with expectations, which, when combined with capex increasing materially, will likely support the bear case. Cordwell, however, said he viewed these concerns as overdone. Jefferies raised the firm's price target on Alphabet to $175 from $170 while keeping a buy rating on the shares. Its analysts said that strong ad demand drove accelerating, double-digit growth in Search and YouTube, though results in these segments were "shy of some investor bogeys." More From Wall Street Analysts: Cloud growth re-accelerated but remains below that of Microsoft's Azure cloud computing program. Jefferies said it sees "an upbeat 2024" with a healthy and strengthening ad market plus Al driving Cloud and YouTube momentum. BMO Capital analyst Brian Pitz raised the firm's price target on Alphabet to $178 from $170 and kept an outperform rating on the shares. Pitz said in a research note that the next leg of GenAl growth is likely to come from infrastructure, foundational models, and apps. Given its full-stack offering, Alphabet is one of the best-positioned Al competitors. BMO also raised its 2024 earnings call to $6.62 per share, up from $6.21, and its 2025 target to $8.06 per share from $7.49. Wells Fargo, however, had a different view of Alphabet's results. The firm lowered its price target on the company to $141 from $148 and kept an equal weight rating on the shares. Analysts there said they viewed tepid fourth-quarter search growth as mostly an Alphabet-specific issue. Negative revisions to search revenues offset a more favorable cost outlook, Wells Fargo added. They noted that operating loss and free cash flow estimates were revised lower. » Phone Comparisons: Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max vs OnePlus 12 Apple and OnePlus have very compelling flagship smartphones to offer at the moment. We’re here to compare those two phones, the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max vs OnePlus 12. The OnePlus 12 global variant launched quite recently, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max arrived in September last year. These two smartphones are very different, but they’re both big flagship units, so comparing them makes all the sense in the world. Before we get into this, do note that the OnePlus 12 is considerably more affordable than the iPhone 15 Pro Max. You may not be able to tell while using them, but that’s the case. With that in mind, we’ll first list their specifications, and will then move to compare their designs, displays, performance, battery life, cameras, and audio performance. Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max vs OnePlus 12, respectively – Screen size: The iPhone 15 Pro Max is made out of titanium and glass. It has flat sides all around, with slightly curved edges. The OnePlus 12, on the other hand, is made out of aluminum and glass, and it’s considerably more curvy than the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple’s flagship has a flat display and a pill-shaped camera cutout on the front. OnePlus’ offering includes a curved display, and a centered display camera hole, a single one. On the back, both devices have three cameras. The iPhone 15 Pro Max has its recognizable camera layout in the top-left corner. The OnePlus 12’s camera island sits in a similar spot, and it looks reminiscent of what the OnePlus 11 offered, design-wise. Apple’s power/lock button sits on the right-hand side, while the volume up and down buttons are on the left, along with an Action Button. The OnePlus 12 includes physical buttons on the right side, while the alert slider sits on the left. The in-hand feel is completely different in comparison, but both devices are quite slippery. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is a bit shorter and a bit wider, while it’s also a bit thinner. They weigh almost the same, there’s only a 1-gram difference between them. Both smartphones come with an IP certification for water and dust resistance. The iPhone 15 Pro Max offers IP68 certification, while the OnePlus 12 has IP65 certification. Both devices are immensely slippery in the hand, so using a case could be a good idea. They do feel great to hold and use, though, very premium. Apple’s flagship features a 6.7-inch 2796 x 1290 LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED display. That panel is flat, and it offers an adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz. Dolby Vision is supported, as is HDR10 content. This panel goes up to 2,000 nits of theoretical brightness, and it has a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Apple is using the Ceramic Shield glass in order to protect the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s display. The OnePlus 12, on the other hand, features a larger 6.82-inch QHD+ (3168 x 1440) LTPO AMOLED display. Its display is curved, and it can project up to 1 billion colors. It also has an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, and Dolby Vision is supported. HDR10+ content is also supported, while this panel has a theoretical display brightness of 4,500 nits. It is protected by the Gorilla Glass Victus 2. When it comes to displays, there’s really not much to complain about on either side. Both displays are bright, vivid, and have great viewing angles. They also have those deep blacks we’re used to in AMOLED displays. The OnePlus 12’s panel does technically get brighter, but both panels are bright enough, even outdoors in direct sunlight. The touch response is also good on both. You can’t go wrong here, it’s only a matter of preference between flat and curved panels. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is fueled by the Apple A17 Pro processor. That 3nm chip is backed by 8GB of RAM and NVMe flash storage. The OnePlus 12 includes a 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, along with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM (up to 24GB in China), and UFS 4.0 flash storage is also included here. They’re both quite powerful from the hardware standpoint, and that does show on the performance side of things too. Both smartphones do a great job in regular, day-to-day performance. They’re immensely smooth with great animations. Jumping between apps is very fluid, apps load fast, and all actions ranging from browsing the internet to processing images and video can be done without a hitch. Both software iterations are well-optimized, and albeit completely different, both offer great performance. What about gaming? Well, the same can be said for gaming, actually. Both of these phones can tackle anything you throw their way, though it’s worth noting that the OnePlus 12 has a huge vapor chamber, and does stay cooler during longer gaming sessions. They both can tackle any game you’ll find in their respective app stores, though, and on the highest possible settings, so no worries there. These are actually some of the best-performing smartphones on the market at the moment. Apple’s flagship has a 4,441mAh battery on the inside, while the OnePlus 12 comes with a 5,400mAh battery pack. Apple’s iPhones usually have smaller batteries, but the OnePlus 12 actually has an unusually larger battery for its form factor. OnePlus did a great job fitting it in there, as many people expected a 5,000mAh battery pack at first. Both devices do offer great battery life, but the OnePlus 12 is a level above the iPhone 15 Pro Max. What is interesting is that the iPhone 15 Pro Max lasted longer in our battery drain test, a bit longer. However, the OnePlus 12 offered more in day-to-day performance in terms of screen-on-time. The iPhone 15 Pro Max managed to cross the 8-hour screen-on-time regularly, while the OnePlus 12 beat that with over 9 hours of screen-on-time on a regular basis. Do note that gaming was not a part of usage on almost all days, as we did that only for testing. The phones were used for various other tasks, though. Either way, both of these smartphones managed to reach those levels, and still have some battery juice left in the tank. You will be happy with battery life on both of them, that’s for sure When it comes to charging, the OnePlus 12 has a huge advantage. It supports 100W wired (80W in the US), 50W wireless, and 10W reverse wireless charging. It also comes with a charger in the box. The iPhone 15 Pro Max, on the other hand, supports 20W wired, 15W MagSafe and Qi2 wireless, 7.5W Qi wireless, and 4.5W reverse wired charging. Not only does it have much slower wired and wireless charging, but its reverse charging is slower, and it doesn’t come with a charger in the box. There is a 48-megapixel main camera included inside the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The phone also has a 12-megapixel ultrawide unit (120-degree FoV), and a 12-megapixel periscope telephoto camera (5x optical zoom). The OnePlus 12 features a 50-megapixel main camera, a 48-megapixel ultrawide unit (114-degree FoV), and a 64-megapixel periscope telephoto camera (3x optical zoom). Both smartphones do provide great results, and quite frankly, there is no clear winner here. They trade blows based on the scene they’re capturing. During the day, they provide very detailed images that pop, and the HDR situations are also handled with ease. We preferred the colors that the OnePlus 12 provided most of the time, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max images were warmer more often than not. Their ultrawide cameras do a great job of keeping the color palette of their main cameras, and both do a great job. The periscope telephoto cameras do a great job on both sides, and trade blows depending on the scene and how far you’re zooming in. The OnePlus 12 mostly does better at 3x and 4x, while the iPhone usually comes on top at 5-10x zoom ranges. As I said, that’s not the rule. In low light, both do a great job but provide different images. The iPhone 15 Pro Max tends to offer images that are a bit brighter, while the OnePlus 12 images are usually more contrasty, and closer to real life. Both smartphones do a great job of capturing details in low light. The main cameras do perform the best in such scenarios, but other cameras are also usable in low light, definitely. You will find a set of stereo speakers on both of these phones. The ones that the iPhone 15 Pro Max provides do get a bit louder at the highest of volumes, but both sets are very good in general. They’re well-balanced and are pleasant to listen to. There is no audio jack here, on either phone. They do have Type-C ports that you can utilize to connect your headphones via a wire. If you prefer to go wireless, the iPhone 15 Pro Max offers Bluetooth 5.3, while the OnePlus 12 comes with Bluetooth 5.4. » Taylor Swift effect on full display as FanDuel prepares for ‘biggest game in history of betting’ The Super Bowl is always one of the biggest betting days of the year, and this year’s game between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will be no different. Mike Raffensperger, the chief commercial officer at FanDuel, sat down with TheStreet to discuss what he expects to see in terms of sheer betting volume, as well as some of the more popular bets placed. J.D. DURKIN: You may have heard there's a big football game a couple of weeks out. Talk to me about that. You're not familiar. I think it's called the Super bowl, a big, big football. It's the whole thing. I know Taylor Swift will be there. What is the, talk to me about some of the trends overall you're seeing in terms of either the types of wagers you're seeing or the new types of offerings that even first time fans will be able to take advantage of in the run up to the big game? MIKE RAFFENSPERGER: Well, I can confidently say it's going to be the biggest game in the history of betting likely globally, certainly in the United States. So just a little bit of context. We recently had the conference championships where the 49ers and the Chiefs made their way into the Super Bowl that day. FanDuel took more handle, more betting than we did in the Super Bowl last year. And so in terms of anticipating in a couple of weeks what we expect to see Super Bowl, it will break all records, not just here in America, but really internationally for the amount of wagering taking place on one game. There really is nothing like the Super Bowl. You know, look, in terms of the wagers, you'll expect to see, we'll have over 600 different markets, meaning things that you can bet on. That's more than any other Sportsbook in America. Very popular one is who will score the first touchdown. And on that market, I can say the Swifty effect is in full run. Travis Kelce is the number one player picked score the first touchdown in just a couple of weeks here in the Super Bowl.
