<p>It would be great if you add a button/option to either make the link pop up in a separate window or not. I think that is a key aspect people will want to choose.</p>

I suppose this happens because you use a visual editor for HTML coding. I'd suggest to use a plain text editor (like Notepad) to edit your code, then copy and paste it into a corresponding window ('Per-Item Template' I guess) of Digest Design form.
