Apple’s biggest launch in a long time, the Vision Pro, is releasing in a few hours, right on schedule. Priced at $3,499, it is exclusively available in the United States. Even at that price, one report suggests that over 200,000 units have already been pre-ordered. Perhaps, at the same time, Microsoft has announced its share of wishes to Apple as it launches its suite of Microsoft 365 apps on the App Store for Apple Vision Pro.

Microsoft has announced “some exciting news” that Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, OneNote, and Loop are coming to the App Store for Apple Vision Pro on its launch day i.e., Friday (February 2nd). This means that Apple Vision Pro users can download and use the Microsoft 365 apps as soon as they bring home the big-budget Apple’s “mixed reality” headset.

It’s noteworthy that Apple has long called its Vision Pro “an ideal productivity tool,” and Microsoft 365 apps are synonymous with the term. So, it’s no surprise that they’re coming. More importantly, Apple Vision Pro users will be able to use an AI-powered Copilot on the headset. This means they could do things like making drafts, summarizing documents, and creating PowerPoint presentations just by using voice.

How’d the experience be while using Microsoft apps on Apple Vision Pro?

Well, we don’t know yet but the initial feedback on the Apple Vision Pro seems mostly positive. However, there are concerns about its weight and discomfort during prolonged wear. According to CNET, Apple Vision Pro is well-suited for tasks like using it as a work computer and enjoying movies.

Microsoft talks about a focus mode in Word. This will help users avoid distractions or fully focus on completing an overdue assignment. With Teams, your digital avatar can join work meetings, adding a personal touch. PowerPoint offers a special environment for practicing presentations in front of a virtual audience. In Excel, you can easily move documents to other apps by using the headset’s pinch and drag feature.

On Sept. 4, 1998, computer scientists Larry Page and Sergey Brin took a research project that they had been working on for two years and turned it into a company.

And they called it Google.

Their project, which would later become a subsidiary of Alphabet (GOOGL) - Get Free Report, became the most popular search engine in the world, capturing roughly 92% of the market.

So much has changed since those final years of the 20th Century. Now, we live in a world where artificial intelligence has moved from science fiction to reality, and companies are competing fiercely for a place in this new landscape.

How this landscape will evolve remains to be seen, but optimism that Alphabet will be a major player helped its shares surge 31% in the past year.

That's great, but it's been tougher sledding for investors recently. After Google reported fourth-quarter earnings, shares fell by 7%, causing many to wonder what could happen next.

Alphabet's quarterly financial results were solid

Google, a member of the so-called "Magnificent Seven," a basket of tech stocks that includes a who's who of big-time players such as Apple, Microsoft, and Nvidia, posted fourth-quarter earnings on Jan. 30.

The company reported adjusted earnings of $1.64 per share, up from $1.05 a year earlier, and beating Wall Street's forecast of $1.59 per share.

Revenue totaled $86.3 billion, up from $76.1 billion last year and ahead of the expected $85.33 billion. Ad revenue came to $65.52 billion, short of analysts’ estimates of $65.94 billion.

While the numbers overall looked good, investors were disappointed with ad revenue and increased spending, including rising AI costs.

CapEx driven by infrastructure

"Our results reflect strong momentum and product innovation continuing into 2024," CEO Sundar Pichai told analysts during the company's earnings call. "Last year brought new excitement around gen AI, and I'm proud of how we responded responsibly with deep advances in foundation models and a number of great launches."

Alphabet's capital expenditure surged 45% to $11 billion, and Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat said that capital expenditures would be notably larger this year than in 2023.

She said the CapEx spending will be driven "overwhelmingly by investment in our technical infrastructure with the largest component for servers followed by data centers."

Porat also said that Alphabet would incur $700 million in severance-related costs in the first quarter.

Last month, Google laid off a thousand workers in its hardware, voice-assistance, and engineering teams as part of cost-cutting measures. Early last year, the company cut about 6% of its workforce, or 12,000 positions, marking the largest layoff round in its history.

At the time, Google said it was “responsibly investing in our company’s biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead.”

Wall Street analysts seem generally positive

Redburn Atlantic analyst James Cordwell, who boosted his price target on Alphabet to $165 from $150 and kept a buy rating on the shares, said that the company's results were robust at an aggregate level.

However, he said, investor focus is likely to be on the fact that Search growth was only in line with expectations, which, when combined with capex increasing materially, will likely support the bear case.

Cordwell, however, said he viewed these concerns as overdone.

Jefferies raised the firm's price target on Alphabet to $175 from $170 while keeping a buy rating on the shares.

Its analysts said that strong ad demand drove accelerating, double-digit growth in Search and YouTube, though results in these segments were "shy of some investor bogeys."

Cloud growth re-accelerated but remains below that of Microsoft's Azure cloud computing program. Jefferies said it sees "an upbeat 2024" with a healthy and strengthening ad market plus Al driving Cloud and YouTube momentum.

BMO Capital analyst Brian Pitz raised the firm's price target on Alphabet to $178 from $170 and kept an outperform rating on the shares.

Pitz said in a research note that the next leg of GenAl growth is likely to come from infrastructure, foundational models, and apps. Given its full-stack offering, Alphabet is one of the best-positioned Al competitors.

BMO also raised its 2024 earnings call to $6.62 per share, up from $6.21, and its 2025 target to $8.06 per share from $7.49.

Wells Fargo, however, had a different view of Alphabet's results. The firm lowered its price target on the company to $141 from $148 and kept an equal weight rating on the shares.

Analysts there said they viewed tepid fourth-quarter search growth as mostly an Alphabet-specific issue.

Negative revisions to search revenues offset a more favorable cost outlook, Wells Fargo added. They noted that operating loss and free cash flow estimates were revised lower.

Further, the firm sees the combo of decelerating search growth and elevated capital expenditure as difficult for the stock.

The Ulefone Note 17 Pro is now official, and the company refers to it as its “first OLED flagship”. Ulefone says that this phone marks two firsts for the ‘Note’ lineup. It’s the first ‘Note’ phone with a curved display and the first ‘Note’ device with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Ulefone mainly announces rugged phones which are a part of its ‘Armor’ series. The ‘Note’ series represents more regular phones from the company. The Ulefone Note 17 Pro has a centered display camera hole, rather thin bezels, and two cameras on the back. Those cameras are separated across two camera islands. Both of them sit in the top-left corner.

This smartphone comes in three colors, Amber Orange, Pearl White, and Velvet Black. The device is fueled by the MediaTek Helio G99 processor. It also comes with 12GB of RAM, which can be expanded via virtual RAM for an additional 12GB. Ulefone placed 256GB of storage inside as well.

It has a large 120Hz OLED display, and a 108MP main camera

There is a large 6.78-inch fullHD+ AMOLED display in use here. This display has a resolution of 2400 x 1080 and a refresh rate of 120Hz. It also has an average brightness of 500 nits. That panel is protected by the Gorilla Glass 5.

A 108-megapixel main camera (Samsung’s HM2 sensor, f/1.89 aperture, 6P lens) is used here. In addition to that, you’ll also find a 5-megapixel macro camera (f/2.2 aperture) on the back of this phone. A single 32-megapixel unit (f/2.5 aperture) is used on the front side of the phone.

A large battery is included, and 33W wired charging supported

Ulefone decided to use a 5,050mAh battery here. The phone supports 33W wired charging, and it does come with a charger in the box. It also has an optical in-display fingerprint scanner, while face unlock is also supported via the front-facing camera.

This phone has two SIM card slots (2x nano SIM), and supports 4G connectivity. Android 13 comes pre-installed on the phone, while Bluetooth 5.2 is also supported here. Ulefone did also include a TPU case in the retail box, by the way.

Comcast is waving the white flag in its battle to keep its misleading "Xfinity 10G Network" brand name after facing claims of alleged false advertising.

After claiming that its Xfinity 10G Network service was “game-changing,” “self-healing” and “ultra-fast” by seemingly comparing it to 5G, Comcast faced a challenge from T-Mobile last year in February where it questioned those claims and brought forth the issue to the National Advertising Division (NAD) of BBB National Programs.

After the NAD did not find evidence that supported Comcast’s claim that the “Xfinity 10G Network” is superior to 5G, it recommended on Oct. 12 that Comcast should discontinue its 10G claims and “use ‘10G’ in a manner that is not false or misleading.” In response to that decision, Comcast filed an appeal.

Now, Comcast has lost the appeal as the National Advertising Review Board (NARB) of BBB National Programs agreed with the NAD’s recommendation in a Jan. 31 ruling after Verizon also challenged Comcast’s “10G” claims.

“The NARB panel concluded that 10G expressly communicates at a minimum that users of the Xfinity network will experience significantly faster speeds than are available on 5G networks,” said the NARB in its decision. “This express claim is not supported because the record does not contain any data comparing speeds experienced by Xfinity network users with speeds experienced by subscribers to 5G networks.”

The NARB panel determined that Comcast should discontinue using the term 10G “when used in the name of the service itself (“Xfinity 10G Network”) as well as when used to describe the Xfinity network.”

In response to the NARB’s decision, Comcast said that “although it strongly disagrees with NARB’s analysis and approach,” it will change its advertising to comply with the panel’s ruling.

10G internet could easily be confused by consumers as an upgrade from 5G when both are very different. 5G stands for 5th generation, and 10G stands for 10 gigabits per second. 5G only relates to cellular network connection, and 10G and is only offered for home internet service. 5G is also faster than 10G as it offers faster downloading speeds.

With all the Federal Reserve dominating the news lately, some of you may be tempted to ask, "Fed, Shmed, what's all this got to do with me?"

Well, if you're planning to buy a house or a car, then the Fed's handling of interest rates has a lot to do with you.

The federal funds rate impacts monetary and financial conditions, which in turn have a bearing on critical aspects of the broader economy, including employment, growth, and inflation.

"When inflation is too high, the Federal Reserve typically raises interest rates to slow the economy and bring inflation down," the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland said on its website. "When inflation is too low, the Federal Reserve typically lowers interest rates to stimulate the economy and move inflation higher."

Higher interest rates mean higher borrowing costs, and people will eventually start spending less.

The Fed sees a rate of inflation of 2% per year—as measured by the price index for personal consumption expenditures—as the right amount of inflation.

Looking for strong labor market

On Jan. 31, the Fed held its key interest rate steady for a fourth consecutive meeting, confirming market forecasts. Still, the central bank pushed back on the chances of a spring rate cut, warning that inflation remains elevated.

The Federal Open Market Committee held its key policy rate at between 5.25% and 5.5%, the highest in 22 years.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell sent shockwaves through the market by effectively ruling out the chances of a March rate cut, citing stubbornly high inflation and a resilient job market.

“It’s still a good labor market for wages and for finding a job. But it’s getting back into balance. And that’s what we want to see,” Powell said. “We want to see a strong labor market. We’re not looking for a weaker labor market.”

Traders are now pricing in a 38.5% chance that the Fed begins the first of its three projected rate cuts in March, according to the CME Group's FedWatch. One month ago, the odds of a cut were 73%.

“We could hem and haw, jawbone if you will, about the perceived tea leaf reading we all just did for the last 45 minutes or so, but the only thing that matters is the idea that a March rate cut is ‘unlikely,’” said Alex McGrath, chief investment officer for NorthEnd Private Wealth. “The Market certainly did not see that coming inducing the ye olde rug pull post FOMC presser.”

Stocks fell after Powell made his comments but bounced back on Feb. 1.

'Not a big surprise,' analyst says

Goldman Sachs pushed back its expectation of the Fed starting to cut interest rates to May from March after Powell's comments.

The firm maintained its forecast of five 25 basis points rate cuts this year and expects four consecutive cuts from May through September and a final cut in December.

"It is not a big surprise that the Fed isn't rushing to cut rates," said Real Money Pro's James "Rev Shark" DePorre, "but the market has consistently been more dovish than the Fed and has been hanging on to hope that a series of cuts will begin in March."

The Fed chair's comments disappointed the hopeful bulls, DePorre said, "but this was not a hawkish Fed decision."

"Powell was upbeat and positive about the economy and the progress that has been made on inflation," he said.

Bill Adams, the chief economist for Comerica Bank, said that many Federal Open Markets Committee members likely think a rate cut might be appropriate by March when the FOMC will have nearly two more months of economic data in hand than they did today.

"But a significant minority of members are probably less confident that inflation is on a sustainable downward trajectory," he said.

"Also, some FOMC members likely believe inflation is on its way back to target, but want to push back against buoyant financial market conditions--high stock market prices, narrow credit spreads in the bond market--that make the Fed’s high policy rate less restrictive to growth than it otherwise would be," Adams said.

At least, if a recent Amazon job listing is to be believed. It also suggests that something is brewing in the Seattle headquarters.

Amazon could be hiring engineers for Vega OS

First spotted by AFTVnews, Amazon posted a Berlin-based job, looking for a Fire TV Experience Software Development Engineer on January 29. However, if you visit the link to the job on the platform, you’ll see that it no longer exists. The job description clearly stated that the main part of the job is to help shift from Android to the rumored “Vega OS.” Amazon explicitly mentions this transition from “FOS/Android,” where FOS stands for Fire OS, to “native/Rust” and React Native for Fire TV.

Last year, reports surfaced that Amazon Echo Show 5 has switched to a new system, leaving its Android system behind. We don’t have the exact date for this change. But it’s clear that Amazon is putting a lot of effort into making this switch. The report also suggests that Amazon may not update current Fire TV devices to the rumored “Vega OS”. Instead, it will introduce new models with this system.

Amazon is not the only one with an in-house OS in mind

Amazon is not the only one ditching Android for its in-house operating system. In recent times, brands like Huawei and Vivo have also moved away from Android. For instance, Huawei has released HarmonyOS, and Vivo has come up with BlueOS in its homeland, China.

The good part is that there may be a lot of improvements in the in-house operating systems, and the sad part is that these operating systems will not support Android apps. This is because there are millions of Android apps available on the Play Store across categories. And that may not be the case with newborn operating systems, let alone the apps available on third-party stores.

The Circle to Search feature that Google announced back in January has started to roll out to the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. If you have either one of these devices, then you should be able to use it as a means for searching for more information about content on-screen.

You can use it virtually anywhere. No matter what you’re browsing or what you’re doing on the phone. Once you circle something, Google will populate a box on-screen that surrounds the item or words you circled. The results of the search then pop up in a panel from the bottom of the screen.

Circle to Search on Pixel 8 makes for easy and intuitive searching for everything

Google’s Circle to Search feature is intended to give users a quicker, more intuitive way to gather information about stuff. And it can be a super fast method for finding additional information about products. Say you’re at the grocery store and you see an item you want to know more about. You can simply take a photo of the item, then open that photo and circle it to search for information. Super easy and relatively fast. To use the feature you do have to activate it but that doesn’t take much effort.

You can activate it in two ways. Either long press on the nav handle at the bottom if you’re using gesture navigation, or long press on the home button if you’re using the three-button navigation. This brings up the circle to search overlay where you can circle or tap the area you want to search. You can also draw a line over the area you’re searching and that works too.

Additionally, it’s possible to add text to the search and potentially more precise results. If you circle to search for something and you don’t get the results you were looking for, you can easily resize the box that pops up and drag it around to see if the results change too. You can use this feature to highlight text as well. To do this, activate circle to search and then tap on or draw a line over any text you want to highlight. Google also makes it possible to scroll around the page to look at something else by using two fingers to scroll around.

This feature began rolling out to Pixel 8 devices on January 31. So there’s a good chance you have access to it already. Google does like to roll things out in waves though so don’t be too surprised if it isn’t active on your device yet.
