I was just wondering if there was a way to change the length of the description? I would like to pull in more of the article, but can't figure out how to change this?

I would like to be able to display images in my feed but also keep the description shortened and allow the user to click to link to the full post elsewhere.

my problem is, if I use the tag %DESCRIPTION% i can view the image, and if i use %DESCRIPTIONPLAIN,100% i can keep the description short. but if i use %DESCRIPTION,100% i get the shortened version but no photo.

what can i do?

Change it back to what it was, and then fix the encoding of the page you're displaying the digest on. That was the cause of the weird symbols, etc, not the digest. There's code to fix the encoding of your page at the bottom of the Get Inclusion Page. The reason IE shows weird symbols is because it's bad at guessing the encoding and renders unusual characters incorrectly in many situations if it's not prompted by the encoding meta tag.

Hi, I am having the same problem. It worked fine when I had it setup for plain text but as soon as I changed to DESCRIPTION in the template I lost my descriptions altogether. I'm actually fine with the plain text because I use firefox, but in IE the text would appear with occasional funny characters instead of apostrophes or other punctuation. I figured changing it to read HTML would fix that, but apparently not. Any suggestions?

Again, based on the feed you linked to earlier, there are no descriptions in that feed for each item.. which is why this will be happening.

I'm trying to digest a self-hosted Wordpress blog, but the digest simply shows the title and then a couple blank lines until the "...read more". The documention says that the "description" should be there. Is this the same as the blog text? I don't see a description field when I compose a WordPress entry.

Hello, mwalsh1962. Thank you for interest in our new features. Descriptions are not going to be implemented in Picture format (at least in the nearest future). And, yes, redirect page is an demand from new owners of Feed Digest.

I have three digests using Picture Beta, they only display titles. Are descriptions possible?

Sure, edit your digest, click on the link to manually edit your template and change the reference to DESCRIPTIONPLAIN to DESCRIPTION. That'll then allow HTML through :)

Hi,

I'm creating my own RSS feed to display on my website using feeddigest. I'm wondering if there is any way I can include html in my RSS item description. I've tried the following (using ascii characters and escaping the &), but I'm not getting it to display the tag info on my website. It would be great to be able to have the description display links and images, but links would be the best.

The word "click" is not a link and there is nothing displayed after "image:".

We're dealing with this over e-mail, but yes, you kinda can if you're prepared to hack with CSS :)

Look at this digest:

The way it works is each item is in a DIV that has a class of source%SOURCEID% .. I then have CSS directives set up to do different styling for DIVs with different classes, say.. source123 source22 source5, etc. You have to add the %SOURCEID% stuff into your code, view the output and then work from there.

No way do I know what I'm doing... Atm, I'm seriously lost in a sea of feeds...

Ok, next question...is there a way to assign a graphic to each feed that I add to my digest? If I can't get content encoded, i'll settle for manually adding an image to each feed...please tell me this can be done :(

In the "Per-Item Template" HTML editor, currently the changes I make affect every feed item the same way.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to modify elements of each feed (by adding a specific image) by each feed so it's easy to recognize visually.

By the way, it sounds like you know what you're doing, but in case you do have more info in <description> (or can put it there), you can change the truncation options for descriptions in the digest template code.

Unfortunately, no. This is something that I want to change, but when Feed Digest was first designed (over 2 years ago now), for reasons of efficiency only one type of "description" field was to be pulled out of any feed items. There's a hierarchy for this, so if description is missing, then it'll use content:encoded.. but currently I think description is higher in the hierarchy.. so it'll prefer to use description if it's present.

In theory this should probably be the other way around, but it's not something I want to change in the existing version due to the tens of thousands of established digests that are expecting it to work as it has done.

The idea for the future is to merely keep verbatim copies of what's in a feed, and then let you use the special tags to specifically choose what you want to show.. but currently it doesn't work like that and mushes everything down to an efficient, but less dynamic, processed version of items.
