Hi Cindy,

You can use a heated mattress pad with anything other than mattresses and toppers made with memory foam.

Memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms.

Memory foam is aka: visco foam, gel foam, slow recovery foam.

Sciatica starts with a pinched nerve at the base of your spine.

The pain radiates around the hip and down the leg.

A nerve is being pinch by the vertebrae where the discs have worn.

The best way to reduce/eliminate that kind of pain is the keep the vertebrae from pinching that nerve.

This is best achieved by maintaining the natural alignment of your spine.

The best material to use for this is a mattress made with an individually pocketed coil

Thwarting any effort on your part is when you buy a mattress upholstered with memory foam. Memory foam is the worst upholstery material ever and will cause any back problem to become worse.

If you don’t have the proper support, adding a topper of any kind will end up being a total waste of money.

I've been to a bed store and was looking at the Tempur-Pedic vs. Simmons Beautyrest Mattresses.

I liked the support feel and idea of foam and hope my aching hips and lower back and shoulders will benefit.

I am a side sleeper, but here's the thing, I suffer hot flashes and night sweats!

They suck, and I'm worried they would be BAD for foam!

I like the idea of no dust mites from foam. Are coils are a better idea for my body and heat regulation issues?

Also... my husband has allergies so 'no dust mites' would be good for him.

PLUS.. we have 3 dogs who all jump up and down off the bed daily and share sleeping with us.

My goal is to help my back, shoulder, hip pain and quit tossing and turning to get comfortable.

Well, we have a lot of details to straighten out.

At present, you are regurgitating the hype that you've heard....most of it is inaccurate.

Let's start with the dust mites. All foams, not just latex, provide a hostile environment for dust mites.

That is not to say that if you buy a foam mattress, of any kind, that you won't have dust mites.

Dust mites are everywhere and they will still collect on the surface of your mattress.

They feed off dead skin cells and you shed lots of them every night.

For dust mites, your mattress is their dinner table....and nothing you buy is going to change that.

What will help:

1) change and launder your linens frequently....and

2) when you have your bed striped, vacuum the surface of the mattress.

Only these steps will minimize your dust mite population.

Using fear to sell products is nothing new. Beware of this tactic.

It's usually used to sell you something you don't need....and won't work....like a dust mite encasement cover.

"Foams"

There are 3 basic types of foams...Memory, Polyurethane and Latex.

Pure Latex is the only one that is natural, made from the sap of the rubber tree.

It is, by far, the oldest...first developed in the 1880s and introduced for use as a mattress in the 1920s.

It is the best of all the foams and the most expensive to produce.

It out-performs everything else by a long shot. It is also, the coolest of all the foams.

Conversely, memory foam is the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented.

It sleeps hot and wears quickly....and off gasses the toxic chemicals from which memory foam is made.

Hi Candi,

Memory foam...the main product in a Tempur-Pedic, introduced by Tempur-Pedic about 25 years ago...has proven itself to be the absolute worst upholstery material ever invented for this purpose.

Memory foam is the only upholstery material that is temperature sensitive.

This means that as it warms from the body heat you give off, it softens and you sink into it.

It takes your body's heat and reflects it back to you, making you hot.

And, the loss of support from softening is terrible for anyone with a pre-existing back problem.

If you have a back problem, of which you are unaware, memory foam will make you aware of it.

If you don't have a back problem and sleep on memory foam long enough, you will develop a back problem.

And, as if all that weren't bad enough, there's more.

Memory foam consists of 61 different chemicals...some of which, are toxic.

It off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it's made, presenting a health hazard to everyone in your home.

Headache is the most common negative side effect of this. It also attacks your respiratory system...terrible for anyone with asthma, or any other sort of breathing problem.

The worst negative side effect, that I've had reported to me, is bleeding sinuses.

My recommendation is to get rid of it.

It is nothing more than expensive junk.

Moving forward, stay away from any mattress upholstered with memory foam.

Natural Latex is and has been the best upholstery material for the last 100 years.

If you would like to enjoy your night's sleep as much as your sister-in-law does, get an all latex mattress.

As far back as 2000 I bought mattresses from our local furniture store.

They would ask if I wanted “plush” and I always said yes.

Every mattress we bought was a Simmons Beautyrest and all were the most comfortable mattresses ever.

All kept their shape…no sagging anywhere regardless of the size of the person sleeping on it.

Now, I cannot find such mattresses and when I read the reviews of the replacement models, many people complain of the sagging.

I recently bought a Simmons Beautyrest mattress, locally, for $3000 and there is sagging in the first year.

Price doesn’t seem to matter when it comes to knowing whether or not your mattress will end up sagging.

I still have two of my original mattresses.

One is a Simmons Beautyrest Classic Theodora Plush Firm.

The other is a Simmons Beautyrest World Class Wilmington Luxury Firm.

My question is, what has replaced these models and are they reliable not to sag?

Simmons is the only one of the name brands that has a manufacturing facility in Hawaii.

Unfortunately, they’ve been sold to investors who have driven down the quality by using memory foam upholstery. The same is true for all of the other major brands.

There must be hundreds of small independent mattress manufacturers across the country.

It’s hard to believe there isn’t one or two somewhere on the Hawaiian Islands.

Do a google search for mattress manufacturers in Hawaii.

If you find any, look for two things…mattresses made using an individually pocketed coil system and mattresses made with no memory foam in them.

Your old Beautyrests would have had that type of coil system and upholstery that was either polyurethane foam or polyurethane and latex foams.

Nothing Simmons makes, today, is worth buying.

I've seen your blog and website and am really hoping you could provide an answer to help me out.

I have been having back, hip, and leg problems recently.

I need to buy a new mattress and was looking for a long-term solution.

What mattress would you recommend?

Here are my issues: I have L4 and L5 bulging discs and an angular fissure in L4.

This has caused lower back tightness and pain as well as significant hip, leg (including sciatica) and knee pain.

I am 6'4" 175 lbs and in my early 30's.

I was very active up until recently when my injury has all but put a stop to it. I am a side sleeper.

What kind of mattress do you recommend? Should I get a latex mattress topper? Which type of pillow?

I was used to "comfy-er" plusher mattress, but I feel like my body is telling me I need something firm.

A latex topper is for surface comfort, not support...and in this case, a waste of money.

It's the mattress that you look to, to provide the support a spine needs.

She’s not getting anywhere near the right support from that air mattress.

Displacement is NOT proper spinal support.

She needs a whole new mattress with proper support for maintaining spinal alignment.

Hi Jim,

Well, you couldn't have chosen a worse mattress or topper.

Most people don't realize that the mattress industry has gone bad, by and large.

That Serta mattress has a weak coil unit and is already upholstered with memory foam.

Adding more memory foam hasn't helped, because it's a lousy product.

Not only is memory foam a poor quality product, it's a health hazard.

It off gasses the toxic chemicals from which it's made.

We are large people, my wife and I.

And, we suffer from many of the physical ailments that you have...and more.

Over the years, we've home tested quite a few different types and brands of mattresses.

Hi Pete,

I'm looking for a new queen mattress that doesn't sleep hot.

My current one is a memory foam that is starting to indent after about 4 years.

At first, it was comfortable, but I am starting to have back pain. For work, I sit in an office chair for hours.

It replaced a double sided innerspring mattress I had for at least ten years that I loved but I couldn't find anything similar in mattress shops around me.

Only memory foam at the top causes a mattress to sleep hot.

Only memory foam is a temperature sensitive material that softens as it warms from your body heat.

It absorbs your body heat and then reflects it back to you.

Memory foam allows you to sink…the heavier parts of your body, more so.

This throws off the alignment of your spine, which enhances your pain.

The pain is caused by your job.

A deck job is the main cause of disc deterioration.

You might want to invest in an ergonomic chair.

Also, take a 30 minute walk every day.

Latex is the best of the foams, much more resilient and much longer lasting.

However, not all foam mattress provides the pushback support necessary to relieve your back pain.

Only a good quality individually pocketed coil unit will do that.

None of the mattresses that we carry will cause you to sleep hot.

The problem you’re experiencing is the same as with most people in today’s mattress market.

The memory foam upholstery on top is causing your back pain...not providing proper spinal support.

I hear a lot of complaints about Saatva mattresses.

Then again, I hear a lot of complaints about mattresses in general that are upholstered with memory foam.

Memory foam is thee thing to avoid if you hope to make a successful purchase.

The first thing to do is flip your mattress over.

This puts the memory foam side down and brings the coils closer to the surface.

If you have something to soften it, like a comforter, you should use it.

This trick costs you nothing to try and works more times than not.

If you then feel that you need a new mattress, I recommend the Wolf Tulah Luxury Plush Eurotop Mattress.

The coils are stronger and the Certi-Pur Certified upholster won’t allow you to sink into it.

My guess is that your aunt has been a victim of salesmanship.

The job of most salespeople is to extract as much money from their customers as possible…often resulting in overbuying.

A mattress has always been meant to be a utilitarian item…providing firm support and enough comfort to allow you to sleep deeply. For the past 40 or so years, the idea of selling a mattress as a luxury item has been pushed by the mattress industry. The problem with this is that you end up with too much upholstery.

Too much upholstery compresses more easily, which becomes uncomfortable quickly and lifts your body too far from the underlying support system.

Hotel mattresses are more minimal with their upholstery…far less expensive than what’s being pushed in most stores. Then there’s Serta…one of my least favorite brands due to the continuous wire coil system that is unique to their Perfect Sleeper line. It’s a cheap coil system that tends to wear more quickly than any other.

Going back 40 years, to a time when it was difficult to buy a bad mattress, Serta was worst of all the name brands…when their continuous wire coil system was first being used.

All of the name brands have been sold.

An investment group bought Simmons and Serta in 2016…now, one company.

Sealy and S&F were purchased by Tempurpedic in 2013.

The change in ownership resulted in inferior quality for the sake of selling more mattresses to the same people much more frequently than in the past.

It’s highly unlikely that you’ll be able to find that same exact mattress.

First, you don’t know how old that hotel mattress is.

A new one, even by the same model name, could have different specifications.

Second, even if you were able to find that same exact mattress, it wouldn’t feel the same.

A new mattress is stiffer than one that has been broken in.

We do carry a hotel grade mattress. It isn’t expensive. In fact, we’ve just put it on sale.

The main characteristic of down alternative is not what it’s made of, but what it strives to do in terms of feeling and looking like down.

Down alternative has a feel that’s a bit different from down, but it tries to imitate down’s fill power and loft using alternative fibers. Different down alternative products have different levels of success at this, but the best down alternative comforters, pillows, etc. should have a feel that’s somewhat similar to the real deal.

Down Alternative Pros and Cons

Pros

One of the great things about alternative down is that you can just toss it in the washer and dryer. Of course, you should always look at the care instructions on your product’s label, but generally speaking, most down alternatives are machine-washable.

Down alternative fills are also more budget-friendly than most natural downs.

If you like a heavier bed cover, you might prefer a down alternative because they usually weigh more than down covers of the same size and similar fill power.

You can also typically rest assured that your synthetic or plant-based down alternative fibers are cruelty-free.

Cons

If you don’t like synthetic fill, then the majority of down alternative products are not going to be for you. Even some of the down alternative products that use natural fibers may mix in synthetics.

Down alternative, no matter its composition, is also not as durable as natural down. You can expect your down alternative products to last about half of down’s life expectancy.

Down alternative also won’t have the feel of natural down. Synthetic materials are not as lofty, not as breathable, and not as flexible and squishy. Down alternative also doesn’t have the same body heat retention power as down, so it won’t keep you as cozy on cold winter nights.

What does fill power mean?

Fill power is the number of cubic inches of loft one ounce of a filling (typically down) produces. The fill power is indicative of the quality of the down, as better down takes up a larger amount of space. Higher fill power means better quality down, more loft, and superior insulating ability.

Is it possible to get cruelty-free down?

It is possible, but in the current market, it isn’t easy (or cheap). To harvest humane down, farmers must wait until the bird molts naturally and gather the down afterward. However, since geese and ducks don’t molt that frequently, most manufacturers are more motivated to live-pluck to speed along the growth of new feathers.

Can you be allergic to down?

You can be allergic to just about anything. However, since down is an animal product, you may be more likely to suffer allergies to it.

Are there plant-based down alternatives?

Yes. We’ve already talked about cotton and rayon (fabric spun from processed cellulose) as possible down alternatives. However, if you’re not all that dedicated to the feel of down, you could also try buckwheat, eucalyptus, bamboo viscose, or latex foam—depending on whether you’re looking for pillows or a bed cover. Breathable plant-based bedding may be the best option for hot sleepers.

How often should I clean my pillows and bedding?

As a general rule (assuming you use pillowcases, a top sheet, and a mattress cover) you should wash your comforter every 3 months, your pillows and duvet insert every 3 to 6 months, and your mattress once a year. Wash your sheets and pillowcases at least once a week. And wash your mattress cover every couple of months.

Bottom Line

Depending on your preferences, both down and alternative down can be great solutions for your bedding needs. When shopping for the right bedding, be sure to keep your needs in mind. The main difference is the support system underneath.

Most commonly memory foam mattresses feature a high-density polyurethane foam (poly-foam) layer as the core. It provides longevity, stability, and support to the mattress. High-density poly-foam core is usually firm and takes up the biggest portion of the structure. Together with the memory foam layers above, it delivers great pressure point support and pain relief.

When it comes to pillow-top mattresses, the support system we find inside is usually innerspring coils. Occasionally, the core of pillow-top beds can feature latex or even memory foam, but that’s rare. Most often, it’s a spring support system inside that offers targeted pressure point relief and keeps the spine aligned as you sleep.

Now that we’ve discussed the key difference between memory foam and pillow-top beds, let’s have a look at both mattress types in more detail.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam is made from polyurethane foam, which is combined with certain chemicals for extra viscoelasticity. It responds to body temperature and pressure as it contours and supports the body. The response rate of the memory is slow as it takes a while to return to its natural shape. Let’s have a look at the main ones in more detail.

Types of memory foam

There are three main types of memory foam on the market today:

Traditional memory foam
Partially plant-based memory foam
Infused memory foam (gel, copper, graphite)

Each type has unique features that affect the overall feel and function of the mattress.

Traditional memory foam

Traditional memory foam is the closest example to the original design that was introduced to the mattress industry in the 90s. Since then, this type of foam was upgraded slightly, but the overall function, advantages, and disadvantages stayed almost the same.

Infused memory foam

The third type of memory foam available on the market today is infused memory foam. It was invented with one main goal—to improve temperature control.

Because traditional memory foam tends to trap heat, mattress companies began infusing it with various cooling agents. The most common ones are gel, graphite, and copper.

The gel can be added as a continuous layer on top of the memory foam. It can also be placed inside the foam as swirls or inserted in the form of gel beads. Whichever the method, gel memory foam works by absorbing excess body heat and slowly dissipating it into the mattress.

Copper and graphite are also very effective in absorbing and dissipating heat. Both are natural elements that are conductive and anti-microbial, making them an excellent cooling agent for a mattress. They get injected into the memory foam in small particles during the manufacturing process. This then creates a cool, responsive, and clean bed.

Advantages of a Memory Foam Mattress

Pressure and pain relief

Because of its natural conforming abilities, memory foam provides excellent pressure point support and pain relief. It contours the shape of the body, allowing the hips and the shoulders to sink in deeper, whilst keeping the legs and the head closer to the surface. This naturally aligns the spine, making memory foam beds perfect for sleepers with back pain and hip pain.

Durability

Memory foam beds are known to last a long time. The better the quality of the foam, the longer the mattress will serve you. Durability also heavily depends on the density of the memory foam. Higher density equals a more sturdy foam, which automatically increases the mattress’s longevity.

Levels of firmness

Because memory foam beds have been around for so long, they come in a large variety of firmness levels. This ensures that no matter what type of sleeper you are, you can find a memory foam mattress that will be suited to your needs.

Disadvantages of a Memory Foam Mattress

Heat retention

As discussed above, memory foam tends to trap heat. Plant-based memory foam and infused memory foam tackle this issue quite effectively, but they still don’t compare to other more breathable mattress types, such as the innerspring.

Off-gassing

Because of its part petroleum-based chemicals, memory foam does release a certain smell when it’s first unpacked. The cooling agents and plant-based chemical replacements can dissipate it faster, but traditional memory foam will most likely have this smell for its entire lifetime.

Poor edge support

Because this type of mattress is made from foam only, there is usually no reinforced edge support within. This means that most all-foam mattresses will not excel in edge support, making getting in and out of the bed more difficult.

Pillow-top Mattresses

A pillow-top is essentially a layer of plush padding sewn on top of a mattress. Most commonly, it’s found on top of innerspring beds, but it can sometimes be seen on latex and even memory foam mattresses too.

Pillow-top padding can be made from a variety of different materials, such as cotton, wool, down, memory foam, latex foam, or fiberfill. It acts as a comfort layer and provides extra cushioning, comfort, and pressure point support.

The difference between a regular pillow-top and Euro pillow top is that a pillow-top goes visibly on top of the bed, while the Euro top goes under the cover. However, both paddings provide the same advantages—improved pressure point support, spinal alignment, and pain relief.

Advantages of a Pillow-top Mattress

The pillow-top layer offers extra contouring and plushness. This improves the pressure point relief and keeps the spine aligned as you sleep. Innerspring pillow-top mattresses are especially effective in pressure point and pain relief. The coils allow the mattress to adapt to the sleeper’s body, contouring each pressure point individually. While the padding on top provides plush comfort, relieving back, hip, and shoulder pain.

Temperature control and breathability

Innerspring pillow-tops are better at temperature control compared to memory foam. The breathability of the coil core is a lot more effective, which ensures there’s no trapped heat unless the pillow-top padding itself is made from traditional memory foam.

Innerspring mattresses usually feature reinforced edge support within the pocketed coil structure. This makes getting in and out of the bed easier, and it ensures that you won’t roll off the bed if you are a restless sleeper or if you’re sharing your bed with a partner.

Disadvantages of a Pillow-top Mattress

Durability

Pillow-tops are known to last only 3 to 5 years. After this time, they tend to sag and lose their effectiveness in providing pressure point support and pain relief. Fortunately, you can always purchase a pillow-top mattress topper as a replacement. However, this means investing extra money into a mattress you already invested in.

Motion transfer

Although pocketed coils are not bad at motion isolation, they still cannot be compared to any type of memory foam. So if you will be sharing your bed with a restless sleeper, you may want to skip on the innerspring and go for the memory foam instead.

As you can see, memory foam and pillow-top mattresses are very similar in their functions. They’re both plush and provide plenty of comfort and pressure point support.
