This timely film was originally produced for the BBC by award-winning production company Basement Films. The BBC has been delaying it since February, arguing it couldn’t go out before a review into an entirely different film, Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone, had culminated. That was a poor editorial decision with no precedent. But poorer still: after months of leaving the film in limbo, last week the BBC announced it wouldn’t air it – leaving it for Channel 4 to pick up.

Why? The BBC said it might create “the perception of partiality”. You’d be forgiven for thinking this was lifted from a dystopian novel. Perception, after all, has nothing to do with impartiality – at least in an ideal world. The BBC seems to have said the quiet part out loud. Impartiality, as far as it’s concerned, is about PR, optics and managing the anger of certain groups, rather than following the evidence and championing robust journalism – no matter who’s angered, no matter how it looks.
Continue reading... BBC Gaza Channel 4 Israel Israel-Gaza war Documentary Factual TV Palestinian territories Middle East and north Africa Media Television & radio Television industry UK news Karishma Patel Photograph: Channel 4 / Basement Films More than 400 media figures urge BBC board to remove Robbie Gibb over Gaza https://www.theguardian.com/media/2025/jul/02/more-than-400-media-figures-urge-bbc-board-to-remove-robbie-gibb-over-gaza World news: Israel | theguardian.com urn:uuid:9cd946b8-b77f-861e-f34a-92acbcc2db81 Wed, 02 Jul 2025 05:55:38 -0300
Miriam Margolyes, Alexei Sayle and Mike Leigh among signatories to letter criticising Jewish Chronicle ties

More than 400 stars and media figures including Miriam Margolyes, Alexei Sayle, Juliet Stevenson and Mike Leigh have signed a letter to BBC management calling for the removal of a board member, Robbie Gibb, over claims of conflict of interest regarding the Middle East.

The signatories also include 111 BBC journalists and Zawe Ashton, Khalid Abdalla, Shola Mos-Shogbamimu and the historian William Dalrymple, who express “concerns over opaque editorial decisions and censorship at the BBC on the reporting of Israel/Palestine”.
Continue reading... BBC Israel-Gaza war Gaza Israel War reporting Media Middle East and north Africa Television Television & radio The news on TV Tara Conlan Photograph: Jonathan Brady/PA WIRE Israel-Gaza war live: Trump says Israel has agreed terms for 60-day ceasefire, urges Hamas to accept deal https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2025/jul/02/israel-gaza-war-live-updates-trump-ceasefire-hamas-latest-news World news: Israel | theguardian.com urn:uuid:4a727047-224b-4405-9463-476dd64ac7a0 Wed, 02 Jul 2025 04:10:24 -0300
US president says in social media post he hopes Hamas will accept deal because ‘it will only get worse’

Full report on Trump’s ceasefire claim

The Red Cross has warned that Gaza’s few functioning medical facilities are overwhelmed, with nearly all public hospitals “shut down or gutted by months of hostilities and restrictions” on supplies.

A few photos of the state of healthcare in Gaza.
Continue reading... Israel-Gaza war Gaza Israel Palestinian territories Donald Trump Jane Clinton (now) and Kate Lamb (earlier) Photograph: Mohammad Abu Samra/AP Trump says Israel has agreed to conditions for 60-day ceasefire https://www.ft.com/content/ab4d1700-7828-4048-96ba-30d5a4dbf725 FT.com - World, Middle East urn:uuid:4026c4f0-3005-4f05-29d1-25066aa73396 Wed, 02 Jul 2025 03:05:46 -0300 US president says Qatar and Egypt will deliver the proposal to Hamas Sabotage suspected as mystery blasts hit oil tankers https://www.ft.com/content/b2671301-d71f-4781-8d8d-86f7b350ff3c FT.com - World, Middle East urn:uuid:edbbc2fa-6c86-9cf4-5922-e6d3677ef14f Wed, 02 Jul 2025 01:00:21 -0300 Five vessels hit with limpet mines this year shortly after visiting Russian ports How oil traders called the Middle East war https://www.ft.com/content/f4cf2be6-0682-485f-a85a-6cbf5fa7c3ff FT.com - World, Middle East urn:uuid:30986f15-da5b-5f84-5b05-fb373bd81dc5 Wed, 02 Jul 2025 01:00:00 -0300 The oil market predicted the twists and turns of the Israel-Iran conflict ‘The scenes were beyond anything imaginable’: busy Gaza seafront cafe devastated by airstrike https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/jul/01/the-scenes-were-beyond-anything-imaginable-busy-gaza-seafront-cafe-devastated-by-airstrike World news: Israel | theguardian.com urn:uuid:d962124a-1785-ffbd-e187-6e0faba039db Tue, 01 Jul 2025 14:56:13 -0300
Witnesses describe explosion, flames and a plume of smoke as peaceful scene at al-Baqa transformed into a horror

Early afternoon was a busy time in the al-Baqa cafe, on the waterfront in Gaza City. Peace will be delayed as long as our lives are considered disposable

Last Tuesday night, Donald Trump announced on social media that Iran and Israel had agreed to a ceasefire, ending what he called a “12-day war”. It was the second war this year, after India and Pakistan’s four-day conflict, to start and end under Trump’s watch. They followed another, earlier conflict between Lebanon and Israel during President Joe Biden’s term.

Here in Gaza, all eyes were fixed on the Iran-Israel conflict. Even cut off from the internet, people found ways to follow the news – on the radio, or by catching weak phone signals by climbing to high rooftops or walking near the sea, or just by staying up all night watching the sky, where some of the missiles launched from Iran could be seen from Gaza. Many wondered if Trump, the man who once promised to stop “endless wars”, would seize the moment to stop not only war on Iran but also the genocide in Gaza.

Hassan Abo Qamar is a Palestinian writer and journalist based in Gaza

Do you have an opinion on the issues raised in this article? A tenuous ceasefire had broken down in March, and a wave of airstrikes followed, as well as an 11-week blockade on all aid. Though some humanitarian assistance was allowed in from late May, military action intensified at the same time.

Growing numbers of desperate Palestinians were being killed as they sought scarce food either from looted aid convoys or from distribution hubs set up by the new, secretive Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a group backed by Israel and the US as an alternative to the existing, much more comprehensive UN-led system.
