Published in 2016, the Chilcot inquiry found serious failings in the British government, which ignored the warnings of millions of ordinary people over its disastrous decision to go to war.

History is repeating itself. Today, the death toll in Gaza has reportedly exceeded 61,000. Two Israeli officials are wanted by the international criminal court for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Britain has played a highly influential role in Israel’s military operations, including the sale of weapons, the supply of intelligence and the use of Royal Air Force bases in Cyprus.
Continue reading... Israel-Gaza war Politics Jeremy Corbyn Carla Denyer Diane Abbott Labour Scottish National party (SNP) Green party Gaza Israel Arms trade International criminal court UK news Palestinian territories International criminal justice Foreign policy Iraq war inquiry Guardian Staff Photograph: APAImages/REX/Shutterstock Purim is not a celebration of slaughter, but of survival against attempted genocide | Letter https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/mar/13/purim-is-not-a-celebration-of-slaughter-but-of-survival-against-attempted-genocide World news: Israel | theguardian.com urn:uuid:b03f34bd-a2f0-2895-c7e0-1680b54363b0 Thu, 13 Mar 2025 14:31:27 -0300
Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis responds to an article that said the festival could be seen as an example of Jewish zealotry

Peter Beinart’s claims that the festival of Purim somehow demonstrates a Jewish embrace of zealotry and is an example of “the evil that Jews commit”, (11 March) is an insidious attempt to cast Jewish history and identity as heartless and vengeful.

Purim is not a celebration of retribution or slaughter, but of survival against attempted genocide. The Book of Esther repeatedly emphasises that even when the Jews of Persia were finally granted the right to take up arms against those across the empire of its day who sought their destruction, they took no spoils, precisely because they were motivated not by a desire for revenge or the thrill of conquest, but by self-defence.
Continue reading... Judaism Religion World news Gaza Palestinian territories Israel Guardian Staff Photograph: Ohad Zwigenberg/AP Israeli attacks on women’s healthcare in Gaza amount to ‘genocidal acts’, UN says https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/mar/13/israeli-attacks-on-womens-healthcare-in-gaza-amount-to-genocidal-acts-un-says World news: Israel | theguardian.com urn:uuid:8198bffa-82e4-6645-03ac-a5b4957b7783 Thu, 13 Mar 2025 13:27:33 -0300
Report details attacks and abuses that ‘destroyed in part the reproductive capacity of Palestinians in Gaza as a group’

Israel’s systemic attacks on women’s healthcare in Gaza amount to “genocidal acts”, and Israeli security forces have used sexual violence as a weapon of war to “dominate and destroy the Palestinian people”, a UN report states.

The 49-page report on sexual and gender-based violence was drawn up by the UN’s independent international commission of inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and presented to the UN human rights council.
Continue reading... Israel-Gaza war Israel Gaza Middle East and north Africa Palestinian territories World news Gender Violence against women and girls Sexual violence Global development Society United Nations Emma Graham-Harrison Photograph: Dawoud Abu Alkas/Reuters Israeli attacks on Gaza maternity wards and IVF clinic ‘genocidal acts’, says UN https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/mar/13/israeli-attacks-on-womens-healthcare-in-gaza-amount-to-genocidal-acts-un-says World news: Israel | theguardian.com urn:uuid:9b9a2184-c821-4ac0-1ffb-b8610408fda9 Thu, 13 Mar 2025 13:27:33 -0300
Israeli forces have used sexual violence as weapon of war to ‘dominate and destroy’ Palestinian people, report also says

Israel-Gaza war Israel Gaza Middle East and north Africa Palestinian territories World news Gender Violence against women and girls Sexual violence Global development Society United Nations Emma Graham-Harrison Photograph: Dawoud Abu Alkas/Reuters Israel hits Syrian capital for first time since new regime established https://www.ft.com/content/8da936d0-15a1-4384-8894-ecead6f96920 FT.com - World, Middle East urn:uuid:233b390f-57ba-e7b3-ccf0-cbe1ac8c067d Thu, 13 Mar 2025 12:29:05 -0300 Military claim to have struck a Palestinian Islamic Jihad headquarters in Damascus is denied by the militant group Israel strikes Syrian capital in warning to new leader https://www.ft.com/content/8da936d0-15a1-4384-8894-ecead6f96920 FT.com - World, Middle East urn:uuid:180c7866-9d5b-4d05-b580-14787a097265 Thu, 13 Mar 2025 12:29:05 -0300 Strike targeting Palestinian group is first since interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa established control The ADL and the Heritage Foundation are helping to silence dissent in America | Ahmed Moor https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/mar/13/anti-defamation-league-heritage-foundation World news: Israel | theguardian.com urn:uuid:223fcf1a-234e-0144-e846-c2b52df643c6 Thu, 13 Mar 2025 07:04:01 -0300
Tax-exempt special interest groups like lobbyists and non-profits are exercising power with little democratic oversight

The repression that began under the Biden administration has accelerated under Trump. People will speak up less; their fear of the irreversible harm meted out by a vengeful state is justified. Now we are all left to contend with the wreckage of the first amendment to the US constitution, which used to guarantee the right to speech in this country.

Responsibility for the erosion of our rights is attributable – in part – to the bipartisan embrace of the non-governmental, non-profit sector. That’s because from the 1940s onward, the federal government has ceded much state authority to philanthropies and non-profits. What we notice, and don’t notice, about that story says a lot about what we notice, and don’t notice, in Israel and Palestine.

The tale comes from the book of Esther. It begins with a dissolute Persian king. He hosts a banquet, gets drunk, orders his queen to “display her beauty” to the revelers, and, when she refuses, banishes her from the throne. As her replacement he chooses Esther, a beautiful young maiden who, unbeknownst to him, is a Jew. Then he makes a calamitous personnel decision: he selects Haman, a pathological Jew-hater, to be his right-hand man. The stage is now set for an epic clash.
Continue reading... Israel Judaism Gaza Palestinian territories Middle East and north Africa World news Peter Beinart Photograph: Zain Jaafar/AFP/Getty Images The Persians — Sanam Mahloudji’s moving, madcap saga of women in exile https://www.ft.com/content/4c62db8c-cd78-472f-999c-de691dfedb5b FT.com - World, Middle East urn:uuid:c62fb58f-a093-98ee-0de8-9c54cd899506 Tue, 11 Mar 2025 02:00:27 -0300 A relentlessly entertaining exploration of Iranian-American immigrant life, longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction Syrian government agrees deal to integrate Kurdish forces https://www.ft.com/content/a0de90e2-b91f-4c62-9c67-bd2f4cb0d708 FT.com - World, Middle East urn:uuid:27ba8ade-d498-7752-c0b3-1e6c55baab66 Mon, 10 Mar 2025 18:00:31 -0300 Agreement will bring a bigger swath of fractured nation under the control of Ahmed al-Sharaa’s administration Starmer facing Reform UK byelection challenge as Mike Amesbury quits as MP after assault conviction – UK politics live https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/live/2025/mar/10/lib-dems-keir-starmer-ed-davey-canada-mark-carney-trump-conservatives-uk-politics-live-news World news: Israel | theguardian.com urn:uuid:039ad658-b91c-1ebc-f4d6-2579b2421da2 Mon, 10 Mar 2025 15:11:08 -0300
Contest in Runcorn and Helsby will be a challenge for Labour

Around 80 Labour MPs could refuse to back government plans to cut billions from the welfare budget, Amy Gibbons and Tony Diver claim in a story for the Daily Telegraph. In doing so, Israel is using food and civilian relief as a political tool to achieve its objectives, a move that the Qatari foreign ministry, the midwife of hostage releases and ceasefire agreements over the past few months, called “a clear violation” of the terms of the truce and of international humanitarian law.
Continue reading... Israel-Gaza war Gaza Palestinian territories Israel Middle East and north Africa World news Nesrine Malik Photograph: Alaa Badarneh/EPA Iran’s hardliners dig in as Trump increases pressure for nuclear talks https://www.ft.com/content/60072ea8-d4b7-4f90-8070-cac6094c655a FT.com - World, Middle East urn:uuid:d4474fc7-8be3-a2b4-3934-e0ae94a1d8f6 Mon, 10 Mar 2025 02:00:32 -0300 Reformist president Masoud Pezeshkian’s hopes for détente with west in tatters as rival factions tighten grip on power Ice arrests Palestinian activist who helped lead Columbia protests, lawyer says https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/mar/09/ice-arrests-palestinian-activist-columbia-protests World news: Israel | theguardian.com urn:uuid:a3553421-2e24-c485-4def-d1152f3bd8ac Sun, 09 Mar 2025 16:45:23 -0300
Mahmoud Khalil’s arrest comes as Trump vows to deport foreign students involved in protests against Israel’s war

A prominent Palestinian activist who helped lead Columbia University’s student encampment movement was arrested on Saturday night by federal immigration authorities who claimed they were acting on a state department order to revoke his green card, according to his attorney.

Mahmoud Khalil was at his university-owned apartment, blocks from the private Ivy League university’s main campus in New York when several Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agents entered the building and took him into custody, his attorney, Amy Greer, told the Associated Press.
Continue reading... Trump administration US universities Protest US news US politics Israel-Gaza war Israel Gaza Donald Trump Palestinian territories Middle East and north Africa World news Guardian staff and agency Photograph: Ted Shaffrey/AP Hundreds killed in clashes and sectarian violence in Syria https://www.ft.com/content/e702c71d-a56a-4eda-baad-3800c6ac2a76 FT.com - World, Middle East urn:uuid:08765d25-6875-6a28-995f-8770ce508b84 Sun, 09 Mar 2025 11:33:04 -0300 President Ahmed al-Sharaa calls for calm after attempted pro-Assad uprising triggers revenge killings by pro-government forces US condemns Syria violence after hundreds killed in sectarian clashes https://www.ft.com/content/e702c71d-a56a-4eda-baad-3800c6ac2a76 FT.com - World, Middle East urn:uuid:1f85919c-d287-48a3-da8d-a4e5db71fe26 Sun, 09 Mar 2025 11:33:04 -0300 President Ahmed al-Sharaa calls for calm after attempted pro-Assad uprising triggers revenge killings by pro-government forces Labor was warned its perceived ‘one-sided’ Israel support over Gaza raised social cohesion concerns https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2025/mar/10/labor-australia-government-israel-gaza-social-cohesion-ntwnfb World news: Israel | theguardian.com urn:uuid:7e7d3e73-9c45-c32b-6fc4-10dcb9caa2da Sun, 09 Mar 2025 11:00:09 -0300
Exclusive: Department told minister in November 2023 Palestinian and Muslim communities were ‘extremely angry, hurt and betrayed’

Get our breaking news email, free app or daily news podcast

The home affairs department warned the government as early as November 2023 that its perceived one-sidedness in support of Israel during the Gaza conflict left Palestinian and Muslim Australians feeling “extremely angry” and “betrayed” , as well as concerned about social cohesion, documents reveal.

A November 2023 briefing document to the then immigration minister, Andrew Giles, was obtained by Guardian Australia under freedom of information laws.
