Chinese Restaurant Along Miracle Mile Robbed

MID-WILSHIRE (CBSLA) – Authorities said five men entered a Chinese restaurant at 6031 San Vicente, assaulted employees and robbed the cash register.

March 22, 2022.

The incident, according to officials with the Los Angeles Police Department, occurred at around 9 p.m.

“They grabbed, snatched. They snatched one and took the monitor and then ran, and then the other two guys came up and snatched the other one,” eyewitness Pamela Clay said.

One suspect was seen wearing a yellow hoodie and another other a black hoodie.

All five suspects fled westbound on San Vicente on foot.

Car Shot Dozens Of Times, Victim Transported To Hospital

One person who survived the shooting was transported to the hospital in an unknown condition. She had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Jokic, Nuggets Bounce Back With 127-115 Win Over LA Clippers

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nikola Jokic bounced back from a rare poor shooting performance, scoring 30 points to lead the Denver Nuggets to a 127-115 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday night.

It was his supporting cast’s performance that fired up coach Michael Malone, who smiled as he scanned the stat sheet and saw all five starters plus reserves Bones Hyland and Austin Rivers had scored in double figures.

“I’m extremely pleased,” Malone said. “Yes, Nikola is an MVP, but this team with nine games to go, needs everybody to step their game up down the stretch and alleviate some of the pressure that’s put on Nikola every night.”

Denver had lost four of six, including a 124-104 home loss to the Celtics on Sunday night in which Jokic missed 15 shots and blamed himself for the defeat.

Against the Clippers, he was 9 of 15 from the floor — he also had two baskets that were waived off — and sank 12 of 13 free throws. He also pulled down a game-best 14 rebounds for his 59th double-double of the season.

The only thing worse than facing Jokic is facing Jokic coming off a bad game.

“For sure,” Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said. “He was the MVP last year and has a great chance to win it again this year. We knew he was going to play well. Usually don’t play bad two games in a row, so he came out played well, got his team going. That’s to be expected.”

The Clippers, who got 24 points from Terance Mann, dropped their fourth straight game. They have lost seven of nine overall. Marcus Morris Sr., Isaiah Hartenstein and Robert Covington each added 14 points.

Hyland, Aaron Gordon and Jeff Green scored 16 points apiece for Denver. Monte Morris had 15 and Will Barton 10. Rivers scored 11.

“Everybody contributed,” Gordon said.

Jokic’s tip-in appeared to give the Nuggets a 74-61 halftime lead but a review showed he touched it just a tick after the buzzer went off.

Jokic had a tip-in while being fouled with about six minutes left in the game, but the basket was waived off and the Nuggets got the ball out of bounds, then Will Barton missed a 3.

The Clippers chipped away, cutting a 14-point deficit at one point to 111-109. Morris and Jeff Green responded with back-to-back 3-pointers, and the Nuggets closed on a 16-6 run.

“We haven’t finished games the way we wanted to lately,” Clippers guard Reggie Jackson said. “We haven’t come up with as many wins as we’ve wanted to. But keep your spirits up and understand that we’ve put in a lot of work. It’s going to continue to show. We’re still in a great position. We’re going to continue to come out here and play our best basketball at the right time.”

Hyland had four clutch 3-pointers, two in the waning minutes of the second quarter that helped Denver take an 11-point lead into the break. He had another that sent the Nuggets into the fourth with a 99-88 advantage and one that made it 107-95 after the Clippers had pulled within six points.

“That kid plays with so much energy,” Monte Morris said. “He’s coming into his own, for sure.”

Fire Scientist Attempts To Accurately Predict Wildfire Threats

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Amid a devastating drought, record-breaking heat and the everlasting breezy Santa Ana winds, Tom Rolinski is hoping his team is prepared for yet another fire season.

“The bad news here is because we haven’t had a lot of precipitation since the beginning of January things have really dried out,” he said.

Rolinksi is a fire scientist with Southern California Edison and leads the effort to more accurately predict the threat of wildfires in the utility’s highest risk areas.

“We’re doing all this modeling,” said Rolinski. “We’re modeling the atmosphere. We’re modeling the fuel conditions plus we’ve got over a thousand weather stations over 100 high-[definition] cameras.”

The laundry list of available tools helps Rolinski and his team reduce the number of homes getting their power shut off in wildfire conditions.

“If we have to de-energize it, we may only have to de-energize part of a circuit,” Rolinksi said.

This new effort is a welcomed surprise to homeowners in at-risk neighborhoods.

“That actually sounds pretty cool,” said homeowner Anthony Dominguez.

Domingez said he hopes this new approach works for his Santa Clarita neighborhood after he claims his home went dark four or five times during strong winds. He also said that his neighbors never had their power shut off.

“I asked people who work on the power lines and they’re always like ‘Oh that’s just how the grid is,” said Dominguez.

The energy company has focused a vast amount of resources on covering overhead conductors to reduce the risk of wildfires. In other areas, they have installed switchers to isolate the parts of a high-risk neighborhood.

“If a fire starts in a particular part of our service area we can see where it’s going to spread,” said Rolinski. “How quickly it’s going to spread, how intense it will be and what the impact be to those particular communities.”

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – With only a couple of months left until the June primary election, the five leading candidates in the race to become mayor of Los Angeles came out swinging against each other in Tuesday evening’s debate.

“It’s great to see Rick Caruso here, finally… for joining us, Rick,” mayor candidate Joe Buscaino said, taking the first barrage of shots at billionaire developer Rick Caruso.

Tuesday marked the first time Caruso took to the debate stage with the four other top polling candidates.

With very topic of the night, the homelessness crisis, Caruso shot back at Councilman Buscaino.

“Since you’ve been a city councilman, there are 700 more people on the streets in your district alone. So, I don’t know how you quantify success when the problem has gotten worse under your leadership.”

The candidates emphasized confronting homeless encampments would be a priority.

“I would declare a state of emergency on day one locally, but we also need the state and the federal government involved. I want to … house 15,000 people by the end of the first year,” mayoral candidate Karen Bass said.

Councilman Kevin de León shared some of his own personal history around the issue.

“I know what housing insecurity feels like because in my early 20’s, I was homeless. Anyone on this stage can make big, bold pronouncements on the issue of homelessness, but there’s one major difference and that difference is I’m already doing something about it. I’ve built more housing opportunities in Los Angeles for our unhoused neighbors in the past year,” he said.

“It’s irresponsible to say the homelessness issue is only about housing. We have a drug addiction epidemic, dangerous meth. People are not in the right mind frame to say yes to help,” Caruso said.

“We should be saying to people experiencing homelessness, ‘The streets are dangerous for you. It’s no place for you to live. We have a place for you, but there’s going to be a choice date, after which you can’t stay here because our public spaces need to safe and accessible for everyone,'” mayor candidate Mike Feuer said.

“What you can’t do is say, ‘We’re going to allow some certain encampments to be in certain parts of this,'” Caruso shot back.

The candidates also sparred on crime.

“We need to hire mental health specialists to get our LAPD officers off the mental health frontlines and back on the line of duty to protect and serve,” de León said.

“And in my office, I would have an Office of Community Safety, so we can prevent the crimes of the future and make the investments in communities that will do that,” Bass said.

“And instead of taking a look at our city and saying, ‘The pie is only so big, and so we can only afford to do so many things and if we’re going to add more offices, we have to cut other things,’ why don’t we focus on growing the pie,” Caruso said.

As the hour and a half debate pressed on, the candidate kept up their attacks on Caruso.

“I’m prepared to release my taxes tomorrow for the last five years,” Feuer said to Caruso. “Are you?”

“Believe me, I pair my fair share, plus,” Caruso responded.

The candidates attacked Caruso for his wealth and being out of touch.

“My work trip is not on a $100 million yacht,” Buscaino said.

“I’ll just be five seconds on this,” Caruso said. “Just stipulate, the LA City Council is the highest paid -”

“You know, you can’t let the rich break the rules here tonight,” de León said.

For his part, Caruso fired back.

“There’s a great difference here. There’s 63 years of career politicians on this stage, a lot of great ideas, none of which were implemented before they ran for office. So, there’s a lot of empty promises.”

“You know, Rick, you’re my friend,” Bass responded, “but stop denigrating ‘career politicians.’ People have devoted their life to public service. Any of us that become mayor, you have to work with the city council.”

June 7 is the primary. The top two finishers will go on to compete in November’s election, unless one of the candidates gets more than 50% of the vote, which is very unlikely.

Woman Dies After Collapsing At LA Marathon

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — A woman who collapsed at the finish line of the Los Angeles Marathon died Tuesday, according to organizers.

The Rancho Palos Verdes resident, Trisha Paddock was running the half marathon where all participants were fundraising for one of the race’s official charities. According to marathon results, she was 46, however, Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Erik Scott said she was 44.

According to Scott, crews encountered Paddock at 12:10 p.m. on Sunday. Scott said that she had “a medical complaint which escalated to a witnessed cardiac arrest.”

“Medical aid was quickly provided by over a dozen personnel, including LAFD Cycle Teams, and the patient was rapidly treated and transported to a local hospital,” he said.

Van Nuys Business With ‘Russian’ In It’s Name Forced To Change Name

VAN NUYS (CBSLA) — A Ukrainian car customizer was forced to change his shop’s name after being harassed on the phone and online for having the word “Russian” in his business’s name.

“The old name was Russian Wrapz,” said co-owner Jay Shedludko. “And now we have to change it to Hussle Customs.”

Shedluko said that the word “Russian” was meant to show quality and care when the business launched two years ago.

“They started all of this. Hatred got thrown away on us for basically being ourselves,” he said. “For me, I’m Ukrainian. I’m not Russian but I speak Russian my whole life.”

He added he hoped having Russian in the shop’s name would help connect them to the Russian-speaking community in Los Angeles, many of whom are Ukrainians and Belarussians.

“I have some relatives who lived and still live in Ukraine,” said co-owner Denis Shatun. “Of course, it’s hard to see that. It’s like my own country is being bombed.”

Shaun said he immigrated from Russia after the government targeted him for demonstrating against the current regime.

“I don’t have even a friend that supports this war,” he said. “Most of them say they stand against Putin.”

The owners are also debating if they should keep a mural that features a famous church in Kyiv on one side and the Kremlin on the other.

“That was the whole point, to show people we are united,” said Shedludko.

LAUSD To Lift Indoor Mask-Wearing Mandate Wednesday

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Staff and students in the Los Angeles Unified School District will be able to remove their masks indoors starting Wednesday as the district aligns with the state and county’s guidance on face coverings.

“Suffice it to say at this point, that based on improved conditions in our community and certainly in our school system as a result of the proactive measures adopted by this board, have led to conditions that have allowed for the significant relaxation of existing protocols,” LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho told the Board of Education Tuesday. “We continue to be guided by science and we are where we are today because of the adoption early adoption of the measures.”

Teachers in the LAUSD Monday night voted overwhelmingly to approve the removal of indoor mask-wearing requirements for students and staff.

Members of United Teachers Los Angeles, the union which represents thousands of LAUSD teachers, voted by a margin of 84% to 16% to approve an agreement with the district that will make masks optional for K-12 students and staff beginning Wednesday.

However, masks will continue to be required for staff and students in preschool programs, since a coronavirus vaccine has not yet been federally approved for children under the age of 5.

The agreement, which was first announced Friday, calls for continued weekly COVID testing of all students and staff through the end of the school year with masks “strongly recommended” indoors.

The district also must continue to offer KN95 or N95 masks to any employee who requests them. The district also must provide take-home COVID tests to all students and staff “for baseline testing prior to the beginning of the 2022 spring break.”

The agreement will be in place until June 30. Additional talks are expected later to determine protocols for the next school year.

The issue has been a controversial one since the state of California and L.A. County both lifted the mask mandate for school campuses on March 12, but LAUSD kept its requirement in place due to a clause in its labor contract with UTLA which required mask-wearing through the end of the semester.

LAUSD, the second largest school district in the nation, has over 600,000 students and 75,000 staff.

LAUSD Board To Resume In-Person Public Attendance At Meetings

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – The Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education will reopen its meetings to the public for in-person attendance starting on April 5, board President Kelly Gonez announced Tuesday.

The in-person meetings will have limited capacity to allow for social distancing.

Attendees will be asked basic screening questions and mask-wearing will be strongly recommended.

According to Gonez, people will still be able to call in to meetings.

The general public comment session will be held at a set time of 4 p.m. during each meeting.

Orange County Leaders Committed To Offering Free COVID Tests And Vaccines For Those In Need

SANTA ANA (CBSLA) – Free COVID testing and vaccines have been a lifeline through the pandemic, but federal dollars that funded much of those programs for the uninsured is running out, though some local programs plan to carry on.

For Elisa Ponce, a front-line worker who can’t afford to pay for COVID tests, getting them for free is a must.

“I wouldn’t be able to get tested and I wouldn’t be able to go back to work,” she said.

Tuesday is the last day that most health care clinics are offering testing at no charge as federal funding for the program ends.

However, at Latino Health Access in Santa, the free tests will continue for thousands of uninsured, low-income people who have benefitted from the service since the pandemic started.

“So, we definitely need to give them access to this testing so we stop the virus. We do not want to get them saying, ‘Well, if I need to pay the $140, or whatever the cost may be, then I’m just not going to get tested,’ and then they’re gonna get all the family sick. So, it’s not a good idea right now to stop getting tested,” said Loreta Ruiz, Associate Director of the COVID-19 Response Program.

The clinic on 4th Street is located in the poorest section of the county.

Juan Sanchez, who has recently been hired at a job, which got him off the streets and into an apartment, rode his bike to Latino Health Access to get his free test.

“The company tell me I need the test for the work,” Sanchez said.

He’s in the same boat as Ponce, where if they can’t test, they can’t work.

“I just go home. I can’t do anything about it. I can’t go back to work. I can’t make money and can’t put food on the table for my little ones. So, it’s a hard situation,” Ponce said.

Orange County leaders are committed to offering free COVID tests and vaccines for those who need it most.

“Well, what I heard today when I asked in the board meeting is that we will for sure be making these resources available through June 30. Hopefully, we don’t have another surge, but that’s what we don’t want to risk. We want to make sure that people continue to test,” Orange County Board Supervisor Katrina Foley told CBSLA.

New Regulations Aim To Reduce Cost Of Fire Insurance

CHATSWORTH (CBSLA) — Joan Salvatore moved to this remote part of Chatsworth to retire and relax but finds herself stressed out after her fire insurance premium increased by 400%.

“It’s stressful every month wondering where I am going to get the money to pay my bills,” she said.

Last fall, Salvatore got a notice from Travelers, an insurance company, that she had been dropped as a client because of an “increased risk of wildfire loss.” Unable to find another insurer willing to cover her, Salvatore was forced to enroll in the state-run insurance program called the California Fair Plan with a $4000 a year premium. On her previous plan, she paid $1000 a year.

“It means that my little part-time job that was supposed to be my retirement “fun money” is allowing me to barely scrape by and pay my bills,” Salvatore said.

In an effort to drive down the costs of coverage, state insurance commissioner Ricardo Lara is proposing new regulations that would require insurers to offer cost incentives for homeowners that stake steps to reduce fire danger around their homes.

“Californians are rolling up their sleeves and reaching into their own pockets to protect their homes and businesses. Insurance pricing must reflect their efforts. Holding insurance companies accountable for accurately rating wildfire risk in the premiums they charge Californians will help save lives and reduce losses,” said Lara.

In hopes of greater transparency, the new regulations would also mandate insurers to assign wildfire risk scores to properties.

“My new regulations will help encourage a competitive insurance market for all by putting safety first and driving down costs for consumers,” said Lara. “I invite consumers to attend the hearing on these regulations happening on April 13.”

Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger included a survey from the California Department of Insurance in her latest newsletter in hopes it will compile data to understand the full scope of the problem.

“I think the goal of this survey is to come up with solutions to what is going on in the state, and that is that insurance companies are reluctant to write homeowner policies based on the fact that we have had many wildfires,” said Barger. “It’s no longer a season, it’s a year-round issue.”

Mountain Lion Caught Inside Of Irvine Business

IRVINE (CBSLA) — A mountain lion was captured today after it ran into an Irvine business.

“Never had such a wild encounter like that,” said Claire Leenerts. “It was very scary.”

The mountain lion is believed to be the same one that was seen swimming in Orange County over the weekend.

Animal control and law enforcement initially tried to sedate the mountain lion but failed. The animal then ran into a nearby business.

“When I first looked up I saw a cat hit the door, hit the partition, and wander through,” said Mark Waterhouse an employee of Morse Micro Office.

Waterhouse added that the cougar went into the nearby lab located inside of the building. The lab typically has 10 people working inside but a power outage in the morning sent them home early.

“It just decided this is where it wanted to be I guess,” he said. “It put itself in the back of the lab — nice and cozy.

Authorities were able to tranquilize the big cat shortly after.

No injuries were reported. Animal control now has custody of the mountain lion.

Police Searching For 5 Suspects In Brazen Beverly Hills Smash-And-Grab Robbery

BEVERLY HILLS (CBSLA) – A jewelry story in Beverly Hills was hit in a smash-and-grab robbery Tuesday, and police were searching for five suspects.

The robbery occurred at about 2 p.m. at Luxury Jewels of Beverly Hills in the area of South Beverly Drive and Charleville Boulevard, near Reeves Park.

The suspects shattered the front windows with sledgehammers and fled the scene with several items from the store, according to the Beverly Hills Police Department.

“Gunshots. I thought it was gunshots. I told everyone to get on the floor,” said one of the owners of the store, Peter Sedghi.

A witness to the robbery and a nearby business owner himself, Wesley Aframian, jumped into action when he saw what was happening.

“So, I come outside and I see the guys banging on the windows with crowbars and sledgehammers, and they’re right by me. There are maybe four, five or six guys. it’s really hard to remember, and they all had axes and sledgehammers,” Aframian said.

“I couldn’t believe it. I was sitting there and I just heard, like, a pop. So, I thought it was a gun and I started calling for Peter, and I started pressing the alarm, trying to call 911 and I just look up and I just see them with sledgehammers, grabbing everything,” said store employee Cindy Delaguerra.

The owners estimate that the thieves made off with about $5 million worth of watches and fine jewelry.

Beverly Hills police said the robbers got out of a gray SUV that has since been reported stolen in Long Beach and quickly went to work on the South Beverly Drive shop window. They then took off in a white Audi, which was waiting for them.

“I know Peter is allowed to carry a gun and I was yelling, ‘Just shoot them.’ I go, ‘Just shoot them, I don’t care,'” Delaguerra said.

“We shouldn’t be on the news for, like, crime seen happening in Beverly Hills. This is really upsetting,” said neighbor Rani El-Saadi.

“I think we need more officers walking the street,” Aframian added.

While the incident was upsetting for nearby businesses and victims inside the jewelry store, Sedghi said he was keeping everything in perspective.

“I’m just happy that no one’s hurt, that’s all that matters. Honestly, these are like my family. My employees, they’re like my family. So, as long as no one’s hurt, it’s fine.”

The City of Beverly Hills does have extensive backup from a private security services that were hired for more than a year now, but some neighbors in the area said it’s clearly not enough.

Habitat LA To Receive $20 Million From Massive MacKenzie Scott Gift

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Habitat for Humanity of Greater LA will receive $20 million as part of a giant donation to the organization from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.

Scott, an author and the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, donated $436 million to Habitat For Humanity International and its 84 U.S. affiliates. The Los Angeles arm of the group will receive $20 million, which they say will be put toward expanding key programs like building new homes, repairing existing homes, and offering loans in underserved communities.

The donation will be the largest in Habitat For Humanity of Greater LA’s 32-year history.

“The significance of receiving this gift during a local and national affordable housing crisis, exacerbated by the pandemic and historic racial inequities, cannot be overstated,” Erin Rank, Habitat LA president and CEO, said in a statement.

Habitat LA has built, rehabilitated, or repaired more than 1,000 homes across greater Los Angeles since 1990.

Scott — who has already given millions to Los Angeles-area community organizations, museums, and universities — earlier this month gave $20 million to South LA’s Charles Drew University.

Tuesday’s vote followed a unanimous recommendation from the city’s Cultural Heritage Commission, which considered the property for the designation on Oct. 21. The landmark was not part of the city’s own list of Historic-Cultural Monuments until now.

The Hollywood Forever Cemetery became a part of the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. LA’s Cultural Heritage Commission said the cemetery is associated with the early development of Hollywood and the western expansion of Los Angeles during the 20th century. The cemetery also represents one of the earliest and most stylized examples of lawn-park cemetery designs in Los Angeles and is a notable work of cemetery planner Joseph Earnshaw.

Besides its historic and architectural significance, the 6000 Santa Monica Blvd. property is a popular tourist stop because it is the final resting place for a number of celebrities, such as Rudolph Valentino, Judy Garland, Jayne Mansfield, Johnny Ramone, and Chris Cornell.

Metrolink To Add 26 Trains To Its Schedule On April 4

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Metrolink will reinstate service on 24 of the most in-demand trains and add two new trains on April 4 as it restores service that was suspended when the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Metrolink will also add four Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains which can be used by all Metrolink ticketholders.

The added trains will reinstate service in the following areas:

— 91/Perris Valley Line: Two added trains with midday service to Los Angeles and a reverse morning trip to Riverside County;

— Antelope Valley Line: Six added trains and schedule updates offering increased flexibility for weekday travel;

— Orange County Line: Two added trains offering more weekday morning service;

— Riverside Line: Four added trains offering increased flexibility for weekday travel;

— San Bernardino Line: Six added trains including later evening trains, plus new Sunday service; and

— Ventura County Line: Six added Metrolink trains including weekday morning and evening trains, plus four Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains that are now available to all Metrolink ticket holders — including on Saturday and Sundays.

Metrolink CEO Darren Kettle said he is “elated that we’re able to restore our service close to pre-pandemic levels, so our riders can get to work, to friends and family and to fun — more affordably and without the headaches of traffic and parking.”

LAPD: Robberies With A Gun Up 44% This Year

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Robberies involving a gun are up a whopping 44% this year, so LAPD Chief Michel Moore is urging residents to keep alert and be aware of their surroundings.

There has been an overall increase in robberies throughout the City of Los Angeles this year, Moore told the Los Angeles Police Commission on Tuesday. The year-to-date statistics Moore presented are a big jump from previous years:

Robberies up 18% from 2021, and 5% from 2020
Robberies with a firearm up 44% from 2021, 57% from 2020 and 60% from 2019
Robberies with a firearm account for 36% of all robberies, and accounts for 74% of the city’s year-to-date total robbery increase
LAPD’s South Bureau and 77th Street Area had the most robberies with a firearm, at 227 and 102, respectively

“There’s been a marked increase of armed robberies involving victims wearing expensive jewelry, as well as just other individuals whether they’re at commercial stores such as mini markets, convenience stores, gas stations, or on the street,” Moore said.

An LAPD alert warned that wearing expensive jewelry in public can make a person a visible target. The LAPD also urged people to travel in groups, remain in well-lit areas, and take a different route home after going shopping. People were also urged to remain aware of their surroundings, pay attention to the other people around them, and if someone may be following, change their routes and call the police.

4th Horse Dies This Year At Los Alamitos Race Course

CYPRESS (CBSLA) – Another horse died after suffering racing injuries at Los Alamitos Race Course over the weekend marking the track’s fourth horse death this year.

Stolen Lives was injured in Sunday night’s ninth race and later died after finishing the race in last place, according to the California Horse Racing Board. He was 5 years old and had 20 career starts — all at Los Alamitos — and three first-place finishes.

He was owned by Vic3tory LLC, trained by Valentin Zamudio and his jockey was Armando Cervantes.

The day prior, 3-year-old filly Fastidious suffered a fatal injury at the track.

Fastidious pulled up before the wire in the seventh race Saturday at Los Alamitos, and the injury required euthanasia, Mike Marten of the California Horse Racing Board said.

The filly was owned by Ed Allred, who is also the owner of Los Alamitos Race Course, and trained by James Glenn Jr. Her jockey was Henry Reynoso Lopez, and Fastidious had three starts in her career, including Saturday’s race — all at Los Alamitos, including two third-place finishes.

Stolen Lives is the fourth horse to die at the Cypress track this year and the third this month.

Ballet Royalty, a 6-year-old mare, died suddenly after a race on March 12. Big Fabuloso, a 4-year-old gelding, died after suffering an injury while racing on Jan. 8.

Last year, the track was briefly put on probation after 11 horses died from a racing or training injury.

Vendors For Threatened North Hollywood Swap Meet Hold Protest Outside Landlord’s Home

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Dozens of vendors for the popular North Hollywood Swap Meet held a demonstration Tuesday in their fight to keep the swap meet from shutting down.

The swap meet, located at 7355 Lankershim Blvd., has been running for decades but is at risk of closing because its lease agreement is set to expire at the end of March. Organizers have been unable to reach a new agreement with the landlord, who purportedly told them that the property was being redeveloped.

At the beginning of the month, vendors were reportedly given a 30-day notice to vacate.

On Tuesday morning, vendors protested outside the landlord’s Hancock Park home. The longtime vendors argue that they are minority small business owners who have operated at the swap meet for decades and they want to stay.

Vendors told CBSLA that the landlord, Moshe Hager, eventually came out and met with them. He allegedly expressed willingness to allow them to stay if they agree to a rent increase and find a professional management company to run the swap meet’s operations.

“To pay the bills, to pay the insurance, to pay all these things,” vendor Roberto Lopez said. “It has to be somebody who knows how to run a business. Because we’re just vendors. So we need somebody to run the business.”

“It’s good news, if we can get someone like that, then we can still work in the property,” Lopez added.

It was unclear if the two sides were scheduled to hold another meeting to discuss terms.

Wilmington Man Arrested In Murder Of Woman In Long Beach Following Wild Chase That Ended In Mar Vista Starbucks

LONG BEACH (CBSLA) — Police say a man who led a wild chase from Long Beach into Los Angeles has been identified as the shooter who killed a woman hours earlier.

Corderell McKnight, 32, of Wilmington, was arrested Sunday night after a pursuit out of Long Beach ended with him running into a Starbucks coffee shop in Mar Vista, according to Long Beach police. McKnight was being pursued by police after he was identified as the suspect who shot a woman in her 30s to death in Long Beach earlier that day.

The woman, who has not been identified, was initially reported as a stabbing at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday at a strip mall in the 6600 block of Cherry Avenue in Long Beach. Officers who arrived on the scene found she was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper and lower body. She was taken to a hospital where she died, police said.

Homicide detectives who took over the case determined the woman was sitting in a vehicle within the strip mall when the suspect approached on foot and fired several times at her. Another person in the car with the woman was not hit by the gunfire.

At about 7:15 p.m., police say McKnight was spotted in a vehicle in the 2800 block of Long Beach Boulevard. When officers tried to stop him, McKnight took off and led a chase onto the 405 Freeway, police said. The chase was handed off to the California Highway Patrol after about 20 minutes before ending in Mar Vista, where the suspect was taken into custody by LAPD officers.

McKnight is being held on $2 million bail at Long Beach jail. A court date has not yet been scheduled.

Detectives say McKnight and the woman were long-time acquaintances and that he specifically sought her out and targeted her. Her identity was withheld pending positive identification from the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

LA County Gas Price Tops $6 Average For First Time Ever

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Los Angeles County hit the $6 mark Tuesday for the first time ever, with no relief in sight as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues to destabilize energy markets worldwide.

The average price for regular in L.A. County was a record $6.01, up about three cents from $5.98 on Monday, according to numbers from AAA. It was the 28th consecutive daily increase, and came just 19 days after topping $5 for the first time ever.

L.A. County’s average price for regular has risen $1.23 in the past month. One year ago, it was $3.92. Other factors including inflation and California’s switch to the summer blend could keep prices high locally for several more months.

Statewide, the average was $5.86 Tuesday, and nationwide it was $4.24, per AAA.

Mother Yvette Martin is trying to plan ahead and conserve. For now, she’s only doing essential driving, which means getting her 15-year-old to school and sporting events.

“I just have to know it’s going to get better eventually,” Martin told CBSLA at a gas station in Long Beach.

California has the highest gas tax in the nation, at 51.1 cents per gallon. Republican state leaders have called for a temporary suspension of the gas tax, a proposal which Democratic leaders oppose.

Last week, Democrats countered with their own proposal, a $400 gas tax rebate that would go to all California taxpayers, including those who do not drive.

Last month, and prior to the Russian invasion, Gov. Gavin Newsom proposed the possibility of freezing the state’s gas tax hike this year in an effort to combat inflation. The tax is scheduled to increase again on July 1 because of inflation.

Free College Savings Program Expanded To All Of LAUSD’s First-Grade Students

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Thousands of first-graders in Los Angeles are getting a $50 head start on their futures.

The Opportunity LA program, a partnership between the Los Angeles Unified School District and the city and county of Los Angeles, launched last year to start first-graders off with $50 in a free college savings account. The program is being expanded to include all of LAUSD’s first-graders — more than 44,000 students.

“A child with a college savings account with even one dollar in it is three times more likely to go to college,” Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez said. “And that child with at least one dollar in that college savings account is four times more likely to graduate from college. Those numbers are staggering.”

Each first grader receives an initial deposit of $50 in their accounts, and parents who pitch in will get a dollar-for-dollar tax time savings match of up to $25 when they file their taxes through Free Tax Prep LA.

“This historic program does more than give kids and families a financial boost toward making college more affordable and accessible — it also
instills a college-going mindset in our students from an early age,” said LAUSD School Board Member Nick Melvoin.

The program, which is administered by the Los Angeles Community Investment for Families Department, is intended to help reduce educational and economic inequality. The savings accounts are with Citibank and uses the Citi Start Saving system.

Some Disney Workers Hold Walkout Over Company’s Response To Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bill

LOS ANGELES (AP/CBSLA) — Several Disney divisions released statements expressing solidarity with their LGBTQ employees on the same day that walkouts took place nationwide to protest the company’s response to Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

Disney Parks posted a message to social media Tuesday morning in solidarity with its LGBTQ employees. It read in part:

“We oppose any legislation that infringes on basic human rights, and stand in solidarity and support our LGBTQIA+ cast, crew, and Imagineers and fans who make their voices heard today and every day.”

Hulu, Disney+ and National Geographic posted similar messages.

Workers participating in the walkout met up at locations in Orlando, New York City, Anaheim and Burbank, where the company is headquartered.

The company finds itself in a balancing act between the expectations of a diverse workforce and demands from an increasingly polarized, politicized marketplace.

On one side are LGBTQ advocates and Disney employees calling for a walkout in protest of CEO Bob Chapek’s slow response in publicly criticizing Florida legislation that opponents dubbed as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. The legislation awaiting the governor’s signature bars instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten through third grade.

On the other are politicians like Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who accuse the entertainment conglomerate of bending to cancel culture after a Disney decision to temporarily suspend political contributions in the state. According to Disney’s conservative critics, the company should be in the business of making profits, not pushing an agenda.

It was unclear how many employees would walk out or what might happen to those who do. Union leaders for the tens of thousands of unionized workers at Disney theme parks in Florida and California said they saw no momentum among their members for a walkout, and advised them not to do so because it would defy contractual obligations. Organizers said they expected some participation from production, marketing, IT and other non-unionized jobs.

One of the organizers of the walkout, a New York-based employee, said they were expecting participation by workers with the “privilege” to be able to protest to stand up for those who can’t, the employee said. The worker spoke on condition of anonymity out of fear of being targeted online and because organizers didn’t want a single organizer taking the spotlight.

“Queer employees have been pushing for years to make this company better — it shouldn’t have taken all this for us to get the attention of people up the food chain. Our voices mattered before all this,” organizers tweeted Tuesday.

A Disney spokesman didn’t respond to an email seeking comment. Disney employed 190,000 workers as of last October, with roughly three-quarters working in its theme parks division.

Disney, whose movies and properties shaped generations of children around the world, has spoken out several times in recent years about contentious social and political situations.

It was one of a slew of U.S. companies that in January 2021 said it would suspend political donations to lawmakers who voted against certifying President Joe Biden’s electoral victory. It also spoke out early against a 2016 anti-gay bill in Georgia, threatening to pull its business from the state, which has become a favorite of movie and TV studios. The bill was vetoed by Georgia’s then-governor.

And the company has not been immune to changing societal expectations. It has said it would revamp the Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean and Splash Mountain rides at its theme parks to remove racist and sexist elements and put short warnings in front of some of its classic movies on its streaming service, Disney+, alerting viewers to “outdated cultural depictions.”

This time, Chapek, who became CEO in 2020, has drawn fire for speaking out about the gender identity bill only after it passed the Florida Legislature.

Republican lawmakers pushing the Florida legislation had argued that parents, not teachers, should be the ones talking to their children about gender issues during their early formative years.

The legislation attracted scrutiny from Biden, who called it “hateful,” as well as other Democrats who argue it demonizes LGBTQ people. It has been sent to DeSantis, who is expected to sign it into law.

Chapek apologized earlier this month for not coming out more forcefully and publicly against the bill, saying Disney officials had been working behind the scenes to stop it. Chapek also announced a pause to all political donations in Florida and more support for advocacy groups fighting similar legislation in other states. Chapek reiterated those points during a company-wide discussion with employees on Monday.

Ex-Long Beach Police Officer Pleads Guilty In Child Porn Case

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A former Long Beach police officer pleaded guilty Monday to distributing child pornography, including while on duty.

Anthony Brown, 57, of Lakewood, entered the plea to a single federal count.

In his plea agreement, Brown acknowledged using his mobile phone to log into the internet-based messaging application MeWe to distribute sexually explicit images of underage girls in November 2019, March 2020 and April 2020, the U.S. attorney’s office said in a statement.

Brown also possessed an image of a girl who appeared to be 11 or 12 years old, prosecutors said.

Brown, a 27-year veteran of the Police Department, left the force last year after his arrest on state charges of possessing an distributing child pornography, prosecutors said.

The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office later dismissed the charges because of the federal case, the U.S. attorney’s office said.

Brown could face five years up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced in July.

Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Blocking $320 Million Deal To Sell Angel Stadium To The Angels

ANAHEIM (CBSLA) — A judge has dismissed a lawsuit seeking to block Angel Stadium’s sale to the Los Angeles Angels, allowing the $320 million deal to move forward.

The lawsuit filed by the People’s Homeless Task Force had claimed Anaheim illegally switched from a land lease to a sale, and that the deal may have violated the state’s affordable housing law.

A judge dismissed the claims, ruling that the deal can continue. The $320 million deal includes the stadium and 150 acres of land around it, and in exchange, the team has committed to staying in Anaheim through at least 2050.

The Angels have plans to build homes, shops, restaurants, hotels, and offices on what are now parking lots around the stadium, but neighbors have concerns. about the development plans.

Magnitude-3.4 Quake Rattles Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – A magnitude 3.4 earthquake shook Ontario and Rancho Cucamonga early Tuesday morning.

The earthquake struck at 3:33 a.m. about three miles east of the Ontario city center, five miles south of Rancho Cucamonga and 6.8 miles southeast of Fontana, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The epicenter was near Jurupa Street and Commerce Parkway in Ontario.

It occurred at a depth of 4.5 miles.

As of 4:30 a.m., 757 people had reported feeling the quake through USGS’s “Did You Feel It?” platform. It was felt as far west as Huntington Beach and as far south as Temecula.

There were no reports of damage or injuries.

Car Nearly Slams Into Fatburger In West Hollywood

The two-car crash occurred at about 2:20 a.m. in the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and Gardner Street.

The impact sent one of the cars spinning into the patio of the restaurant, but it did not hit the building itself.

The exact cause was still unclear.

Water Main Break Floods Streets In Westlake District

The water main break occurred in the area of Beverly Boulevard and Belmont Avenue at around 2:45 a.m.

The water flowed for nearly two hours before Los Angeles Department of Water and Power crews shut it off.

It’s unclear if any buildings suffered damage. LADWP did not confirm how many customers were without water service, or what may have caused the break.

On Monday morning, a water main break flooded a street in the Hollywood Hills, just off the 101 Freeway. LADWP said aging pipes built in the 1930s were to blame.

Forsberg’s 5-Point Night Propels Predators Past Ducks, 6-3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Filip Forsberg scored two goals in the third period of a five-point performance, and Matt Duchene added two power-play goals in the final minutes of the Nashville Predators’ 6-3 victory over the skidding Anaheim Ducks on Monday night.

Forsberg capped his spectacular night by setting Nashville’s single-season record with his 35th goal, scoring into an empty net with 2:03 to play. He broke the franchise mark set in 2019 by Viktor Arvidsson, now with the Los Angeles Kings.

“We couldn’t let him keep it for too long when he’s not on our team anymore,” Forsberg said with a grin. “(Arvidsson) is one of my closest friends, but it feels good to take it from him, not gonna lie.”

Roman Josi and Ryan Johansen also scored for the Predators, who pulled even with Minnesota on points for second place in the Central Division with their seventh win in nine games.

Forsberg put the Predators ahead 3-2 early in the third period after a turnover by Max Comtois, and Duchene added his 33rd goal just 83 seconds later with a between-the-legs finish — something he hadn’t tried since childhood, he said.

Duchene wasn’t upset about Forsberg beating him past Arvidsson’s record with the empty-netter, noting there are still 19 games to play.

“We’ve gone back and forth,” Duchene said. “The great thing is we’re pushing each other, and it’s not like we’re not passing to each other. If you’re going to achieve greatness, you might as well do it together.”

Anaheim trimmed the Predators’ lead to 4-3 on its second goal from Derek Grant with 9:47 to play, but Duchene banged home a one-timer off a beautiful cross-ice pass from Forsberg moments later.

“We’re helping each other,” Forsberg said. “We’re trying to build that chemistry. It’s been getting better and better, and I hope it’s going to be a race all the way to the end.”

Juuse Saros made 21 saves for Nashville before leaving the ice with 12:49 left because of a problem with his skate. David Rittich played 44 seconds and made one save before Saros returned. He finished with 25 stops.

Troy Terry scored his 30th goal for the Ducks, who have lost seven straight (0-5-2).

John Gibson stopped 25 shots in the Ducks’ first game since new general manager Pat Verbeek completed his deadline sell-off by trading homegrown veterans Hampus Lindholm and Rickard Rakell. Anaheim is all but certain to miss the playoffs for the fourth straight season, but Verbeek has built a big cache of high draft picks and young talent for the rebuild.

Forward Gerry Mayhew made his Ducks debut one day after they claimed him off waivers from Philadelphia.

Anaheim forward Jakob Silfverberg missed his sixth straight game, and the Ducks announced he has a blood clot in his right leg. The veteran won’t skate for at least a couple of weeks, but he hopes to play again this season.

DUCKS REDUX

Lindholm and Rakell were the last of four soon-to-be unrestricted free agents sent out the door by Verbeek in an acceleration of his rebuilding effort.

Verbeek said he determined several days ago that he couldn’t re-sign Lindholm, Rakell, defenseman Josh Manson or forward Nicolas Deslauriers to acceptable deals, so he used the fan favorites to accumulate draft picks that can be used to replenish Anaheim’s system or to make more moves. The Ducks now have 12 picks in the first two rounds of the next three drafts.

Anaheim also acquired Zach Aston-Reese and Dominik Simon from Pittsburgh for Rakell. They are expected to report to the Ducks on Tuesday.

“I’m happy with how it’s turned out in getting those young players and now accumulating some draft picks,” Verbeek said. “It opens up the whole situation where I’ll be able to explore options over the next few months.”

Tarzana Homeowner Puts Neighborhood On Alert After Shooting Trespasser

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – A trespasser remains at large after he was allegedly shot and wounded by a homeowner early Monday morning in a Tarzana neighborhood, authorities said.

At about 6:30 a.m., Los Angeles police officers responded to a report of a single shot fired in the 5800 block of Melvin Avenue, a few blocks north of the 101 Freeway.

According to LAPD Lt. Julie Rodriguez, a homeowner had discovered a transient on a vacant property that he owns.

“It appears a possible transient had breached into a vacant residence,” Rodriguez said. “The resident who lives nearby who owns that property became aware that somebody was on his property. We’re not sure at this time exactly what happened.”

After being struck, the trespasser ran from the scene, the homeowner told officers. He remains on the loose. Authorities learned that the man broke the fence of the yard to gain entry.

The homeowner was detained Monday morning for questioning. He told officers the suspect was struck in his “lower-extremities” and the wound was not life-threatening, Rodriguez told CBSLA. Investigators also took his gun.

“It’s most likely going to be some kind of self-defense on the part of the owner who did fire one round at our victim,” Rodriguez said.

The homeowner spoke to reporters Monday evening, telling them that the trespasser reached into his pocket before pointing something at him. He said the trespasser also sprayed mace.

“It’s a very fast choice,” he said, noting how he fired one shot as the homeless man sprayed bear mace in his direction. “At that point in time, I was able to keep him on the floor until I contacted 911.”

The trespasser got up and ran, the homeowner said, and was last seen fleeing on Corbin Avenue, north of Hatteras Street.

The homeowner, who asked that his name not be used, told reporters that he installed a series of cameras around the vacant home due to the large number of homeless people who seem to have taken a liking to the residence. Surveillance footage from the backyard of the vacant home showed just that — a stranger walking through their backyard, perusing the various items being kept there.

“In fact, a car was stolen from our backyard last week,” the homeowner said.

As a result, he told his daughters, ages 5 and 10, that they are not allowed to play in their own yard “specifically because we were concerned that somebody would come back – like they did today.”

“The only thing on my mind at the time was protect my property, protect my family,” the homeowner said, adding that he has warned other residents of a continued threat to their neighborhood.

ECHO PARK (CBSLA) – An eyewitness who shot video on his cellphone of the dangerous and illegal jump that a Tesla made Sunday in Echo Park spoke to CBSLA.

In the video, Alex Choi can be seen wearing red as the Tesla catches air over the intersection of Alvarado and Baxter Streets early Sunday morning, at around 12:10 a.m.

“It’s never a good thing to see the bottom of a car,” Choi told CBSLA.

Choi, an automobile influencer, said the look on his face doesn’t begin to show what he was thinking.

“You can see my facial expression. I was in absolute shock. I went through 20-30 seconds of panic, thinking that those people are very, very badly injured or even dead or they could have ran over somebody else.”

Remarkably, nobody was hurt, though the crash totaled two other cars parked on the street, according to the Los Angeles police department.

Neighbors recorded the occupants getting out of the wrecked Tesla and fleeing the scene in another.

Choi said that he is now catching a lot of heat because he posted the video of the stunt to his popular YouTube page.

“Really, the cameras don’t do it any justice, that noise was like a bomb going off.”

Neighbor Jonathan Sutak, though, was furious that influencers like Choi were glorifying potentially deadly stunts.

“It’s an issue with drivers and it’s an issue of this community of YouTubers who really don’t care about property owners. They just care about YouTube likes,” Sutak said

Choi told CBSLA that he only posted the video because people were saying he was behind the wheel of the Tesla.

“To let people know it wasn’t me. I’m not that stupid,” he said.

The automobile influencer claimed he had no idea the driver was going to jump, and that they only met at a Tesla car show, organized by Choi, earlier that night.

“I had a random guy pull up next to me and say, ‘Hey, you wanna see the spot where David Dobrik jumped his Tesla?’ Absolutely no mention of the fact that he was going to do it himself, and so, I said, ‘Sure,'” Choi told CBSLA. “The moment I got there, didn’t even give me a second to ask him a question, no test runs, didn’t even bother to look at what’s on the other side of the road. He drove down to the bottom of the street. I got out of my car, like, ‘Oh, wow. He’s really doing this, like, he’s really going to do this.'”

Pushed by CBSLA reporter Laurie Perez on whether he feels any responsibility for “influencing” stunts by publicizing them, he claimed this was the first time he’s seen and posted a stunt from an open, public street.

“Most of my other stunts, I’d like to let people know that was all done in a very controlled space. If I posted anything that might appear as if it was on a public road, it was all closed down. It’s definitely not something that should ever be repeated.”

One of the neighbors, Jordan Hook, whose Subaru was crashed into has a GoFundMe Campaign to help with repairs or buy a new car. Choi said he made a sizable donation to that campaign.

LAPD is offering a reward for information about the driver, though Choi said police have yet to contact him, adding that he’s happy to show them his videos, but that beyond that, he doesn’t know anything about the driver.

Doctors Concerned Federal COVID Funding May End

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Doctors concerned about uninsured patients are calling on Congress to approve a new round of federal COVID funding.

“There are people in the community that don’t have health insurance,” said Dr. Jerry Abraham, director of the vaccine program at Kedren Health. “There are people that don’t have any way of paying for COVID services… We can’t afford to do it for free.

Abraham and his team vaccinate many in underserved and uninsured communities, however without the federal funding, Abraham believes the program may not last much longer.

“If we’re going to learn how to live with COVID, we’ve got to learn to keep COVID-19 vaccine programs running — to make sure testing is available when we need it,” he said.

The concerns come as a new strain — Ba.2 — spreads internationally only worrying doctors even more.

“We might see a little bit of a blip, a bit of an uptick in cases but I don’t think it’ll be as significant as the winter surge at all here in the United States or in Los Angeles,” said emergency physician Dr. Michael Daignault.

Daignault also worries that the spread of Ba. 2 and possibly other variants coupled with the closure of COVID programs may expose vulnerable patients to more risk.

“I just worry that the same people that have been marginalized throughout this pandemic are going to get hit hard again if there’s not enough funding,” said Daignault. “They’re not going to be able to get tested. They’re not going to be able to know or have access to antivirals.”

Abraham hopes state or local funding can offset some of the money that may be lost when federal funding begins to fade out starting Tuesday.

“These vaccines mean nothing if they don’t end up in the arms of the people who need them most,” said Abraham. “And we can’t figure out how to pay for that — that’s not real darn shame.
