It’s easy to let life get in the way, and it doesn’t take long for your beard to go from looking like your pride and joy to looking like who did it and why.

Don’t despair! A beard can be revived. Here’s how to do it in three easy steps.

Step 1: Wipe the Slate Clean

Washing your beard will get rid of any excess sweat, sebum, dirt, and even caked up products. Use Big Beard Soap to start restoring a good moisture balance in your beard while removing anything that’s making it look bad.

Step 2: Detangle and Moisturize

Leave just a little bit of dampness in your beard after you rinse out the soap to hydrate it. Then, start working a generous amount of beard oil from your skin down. Starting at the roots, use your fingers to gently rake through your beard.

If your fingers get caught up in a snag, stop there. Start at the end of your beard underneath the tangle and use a wooden beard comb to very gently coax out the tangles. (Many guys detangle before they wash their beards, but follow these steps if there are any knots left over.) Take your time. Don’t yank your beard, and don’t force any knots out.

If necessary, apply a little more water and oil to keep your beard moist and supple. Gently work out the tangles, taking as much time as you need to. Give your beard that TLC that it’s been missing.

When your beard is tangle free, use our beard brush to give it a nice brush through. Make long strokes starting at the chin, using the bristles to scratch (aka exfoliate) your skin. You may need to rinse your beard again if there is too much oil in it at the end of this process. If you feel like your beard needs it, you may want to leave the oil in for up to 30 minutes before you rinse. If you’re comfortable with the amount of oil in your beard at the end of the process, leave it there.

Step 3: Make a Beard Care Routine (and Stick to It)

Beard care is a marathon, not a sprint. A treatment here and a good detangling session there is great, but that’s not enough to maintain a good looking beard 365 days a year. Instead, focus on developing a sustainable beard care routine.

A great beard care routine needs to do the following:

Address the weekly needs of your beard and skin

Fit within the amount of time that you can consistently devote to beard maintenance each day

Involve products that you can afford to keep a supply of

Don’t set yourself up for failure. Trying to tackle a 30 minute beard care routine each morning if you don’t even have time to wash your face some days is just not reasonable. If the latest-greatest $100 beard serum works great for your beard, but it just doesn’t fit in your monthly budget, do your beard and wallet a favor by finding a more affordable product that meets your needs.

You can come up with a great routine, but it needs to address the specific needs of your beard if you want to see any benefits from it. Having a dry beard, an oily beard, a patch beard, an itchy beard, or a length goal are all personal factors that you should take into consideration as you build out your beard care routine.

If you have really dry skin, you may need to use beard oil every other day. If you have naturally oily skin, you may only need beard oil once a week. Beard balm may be a lifesaver for someone with a very bushy beard, but it could make a patchy beard look even patchier.
If you’re not sure what you beard needs are, or you don’t know how to tailor your beard care routine to your needs, take our beard quiz. First of all, congrats for being Beard Confident enough to make a big style change. Here are a few factors you need to keep in mind:

The Second Time Around

Unless you’re using temporary dye for a costume, dyeing your beard is going to be a commitment. Whether you’re dyeing your beard to cover your grays or just for a new look, you’re going to need to dye your roots again and again.

Dye is a chemical that your hair needs to absorb. From one strand to the next and one application to the next, the rate of absorption may be a little different. While you shouldn’t expect your beard to be two or three different colors, be prepared for a little bit of variation.

Should the Beard Match the Hair?

You do you! There’s no law out there that says that your beard has to be the same color as your hair. If you want your beard to appear the same color as your hair, keep something in mind.

Color is a reflection of light. Straight hair reflects a lot more light than hair with any sort of texture. If your beard has texture, remember that different areas on a single strand of textured hair may reflect light very differently.

The same color can appear to be very different on the hair of your head and the hair of your beard if your beard is a different texture. If you want your beard and your hair to match, some barbers suggest dyeing your beard just a little lighter than your hair. If your hair is jet black, dye your beard off black. If your hair is dark brown, dye your beard a lighter brown.

What Color Should You Dye Your Beard?

It kind of goes without saying, but your beard is on your face. The dyed hair is going to be right up against your skin. Be prepared for the drastic way that dyeing your beard can change the appearance of your face. Some colors are complimentary and others are contrasting. Some colors cancel each other out. One color can enhance another or make another look dull.

Think about the color of your eyes and the undertones in your skin. Whether your skin is incredibly fair or a much deeper complexion, the best colors for your face will deal more with whether your skin has warm or cool undertones.

One trick for determining what kind of undertones you have is looking at the veins on the back of your wrist. If they are blue, you’ve got cool undertones. If they are green, you’ve got warm undertones. For warm undertones, cool colors are better. For cool undertones, warm colors are better.

In addition to choosing the right color, one of the best pro tips we can offer is to use beard dye. Manufacturers make dye, especially for the beard. Beard dye is a whole lot kinder to your skin, and the end results are much better.
SYE Access Why Are Boar Bristle Brushes Good For Your Beard? https://www.smokymountainbeards.com/blogs/beard_blog/why-are-boar-bristle-brushes-good-for-your-beard Smoky Mountain Beard Co. - Beard Blog urn:uuid:c390b228-3bad-fbab-1237-a19e131e8584 Mon, 09 May 2022 15:44:18 -0700
If you’ve ever shopped for beard products, you’ve probably noticed something about beard brushes. Many of them are made of boar bristles. Are boar bristles just a style choice, or are they actually good for beards?

What Are Boar Bristles?

In case you were wondering, boar bristle is not some kind of euphemism. Boar is a general term for wild pigs, and the bristles of the brush are pig hair. The bristles are shaved off a pig, usually on the softer side of its underbelly. After being cleaned, cut, and bundled together, the hairs of the pig make for great grooming tools.

Boars have a unique type of hair. It is hard enough to have the kind of durability needed for a brush, but it is soft enough that they won’t rip out your hair. Boar bristles have been used for years. In the not-so-distant past, boar bristle toothbrushes were very common.

Benefits of Boar Bristle Beard Brushes

Conditioning Power

When it comes to hair, humans and pigs have a lot in common. Pig hairs have natural sebum, the same kind of sebum the oil glands in your skin produce for your beard, and so do boar bristle brushes. The brushes are not exactly dripping in oil, but they do have some residual sebum. This can be an added boost to other moisturizing and conditioning products you use in your beard. This little bit of sebum can also help the brush to glide through your beard rather than getting caught up in every tangle.

Detangling Power

Unless they have been intentionally cut that way, the bristles on a natural boar bristle brush are not even. Rather, they are usually jagged and tapered. These differences in the height of each bristle create a structure that detangles your beard without a lot of extra work. This structure also reaches down deep to your shortest hairs and gently drags them in the direction you want them to go. Other styling tools can leave rebellious short hairs laying every which way.

Skin Soothing

You’ve probably heard us say before that skincare is beard care. A good boar bristle brush does wonders for your skin. As you brush your beard, you can’t help but scrape those bristles across the surface of your skin. This helps to work any products you’ve already put into your beard down to your skin, giving your skin the vital moisture and nutrients it needs to stay healthy and itch-free. This is a great method of gently exfoliating your all-important chin skin. Especially if you have an itchy beard, a boar bristle brush can feel like nothing short of a spa treatment.
So, what are you waiting for? If you've been to school or had a corporate job in the past twenty years, you've probably got the expression that goals should be S.M.A.R.T. emblazoned into your brain by now. As played out as that expression may be, there is quite a bit of truth to it.

One of the biggest Beard Confidence detractors is unmet expectations. If you've got unrealistic beard goals, you're going to find yourself in a constant state of frustration. Even with our awesome beard oil, no one's beard is going to grow a foot in a year. And you're really barking up the wrong tree if you think that your curly beard is going to magically become straight when it reaches a certain length. Use these tips to make sure your beard goals are realistic.

Achieve Habits, Not Milestones

You cannot control how fast or how long your beard grows in a certain period of time, but you can control your habits. Rather than making goals about length, center your goals on habits that promote healthy hair and length retention.

The rate at which new hair sprouts out of your chin is heavily influenced by genetics. Plus human hair only grows about a half-inch per month at best, and hair grows in a cycle. Every six or seven years, it goes through a phase where it doesn’t grow at all.

A beard goal of growing the length of your beard by six inches at the end of the year may be completely unrealistic depending on how fast your hair naturally grows. Another guy could reach that goal easily, just because of his genetics. Rather than getting mad because you didn’t win big in the genetic lottery, set a goal that is based on the choices you make. Instead of focusing on a certain amount of length, set the goal of not shaving for a year. Anyone can achieve that goal and be able to rock a nice yeard, no matter how long (or short) it may be.

Work Towards Length Retention

There is no tip, trick, or fix that’s going to make your beard grow faster than the rate at which your hair grows naturally. If you’re a half-inch a month man, that’s what you are. If you’re a quarter-inch per month kind of guy, that's what you are. Regardless of how fast your hair grows, you’ll only see visible growth if you achieve length retention.

Beard growth is a lot like a paycheck hitting your bank account. If you only earn enough to cover your bills, you’ll feel like you’re back at square one at the end of the month, even though you did earn a paycheck. If you earn more than it takes to pay your bills, you will see your balance grow each month. You’ve got to retain more hair than you grow if you want a visible difference. Otherwise that new half inch or so is just replacing what you lost. Even if you’d like a fuller beard rather than a longer one, retaining growth is a key.

Here are some habit-based goals that promote length retention:

Regularly (frequency depends on your skin type) use Big Beard Soap to properly cleanse and moisturize your beard at the same time

Blot your beard completely dry with a soft towel

Regularly (frequency depends on your skin type) use beard oil to keep your beard conditioned and moisturized

Don’t shave for the first thirty days of beard growth

Don’t shave for a year (adjust the length of time to your liking)

Commit to treating potential length retention roadblocks like beard acne and beardruff

Who Are Your Heroes?

We all love getting a little inspiration from the beardfluencers of the Internet. Although beards of all shapes, sizes and textures are wonderful, there are certain factors about our beards and faces that are difficult to change.

If you’re confidently embracing male pattern baldness, you may find yourself disappointed if all your beard heroes could also be in a hairband. If your beard is ultra-fine and needs salt, powder, and pomade just to not look limp, your beard hero doesn’t need to be a dude with very coarse hair.

It’s only natural to be disappointed when you’re constantly measuring yourself up against an image that is unrealistic for you. Beards are as unique as people, and there are a variety of beardfluencers. Find someone who portrays looks and goals that are reasonable for you to achieve.

Even if you’re not into social media, you should make sure you’re working towards achievable styles. If you’re not sure whether a look you’re going for is really reasonable, take a visit to your friendly neighborhood barber. A good barber understands facial lines, face shape, beard texture, and all of the other unique factors about your beard.

Be Beard Confident

Has negativity and self-hatred ever got you anywhere? Probably not. This may sound like mumbo-jumbo, but a little positivity goes a long way. Every now and then, write down three things you love about your beard. If you’re really bold, say them out loud while you’re standing in the mirror.

Your beard may not be perfect. It may not be where you want it to be just yet, but it’s yours. That makes it awesome! Beard Confidence is not about perfection. It's about embracing the man you are right now and being confident enough to love him where he’s at while still pushing him to be the best version of himself.

If you have a positive view of yourself and your beard, you’ll be more likely to make adjustments when needed on the path to achieving the beard of your dreams. If you’re beating yourself up about your beard, you’re far more likely to reach for the nearest can of shaving cream.

Your beard can be everything you wish it was, but give it time.
SYE Access Why Are Beard Combs Made of Wood? https://www.smokymountainbeards.com/blogs/beard_blog/why-are-beard-combs-made-of-wood Smoky Mountain Beard Co. - Beard Blog urn:uuid:452ae86a-dda9-b282-70b5-0bc66ce1cbc6 Mon, 18 Apr 2022 16:58:57 -0700
Whether you’re just past a 5 o’clock shadow or you’re well on your way to being cast in a Rip Van Winkle movie, there’s one thing you’ve certainly noticed if you have any interest in beards. People with the best beards seem to go crazy for wooden beard combs. Why is that?

Wood Resists Static

The purpose of combing a beard is to make it lay down, but a comb made of plastic or metal can have the opposite effect. While it is not a very strong conductor, plastic can conduct electricity.

Static electricity, conducted by a plastic comb, can make your beard frizzy and wild looking when you’re training to smooth your hairs down. In the same way that static hurts if your pest of a so-called friend drags his socks across the floor and shocks you, static electricity can damage your hair follicles over time.

Wood Is Durable

Especially if you don’t do it often enough, combing your beard is a feat that is not for the faint of heart. We hope you aren’t going full-WWE mode on your face each morning, but snags can get the best of us huffing and puffing and pulling and tugging. Plastic combs just don’t have the fortitude to handle a coarse tangled beard. Wooden combs can stand up to the challenge.

Wood Is Porous

Oil is the name of the game when it comes to retaining moisture in a beard. Wooden beard combs have the added benefit of sucking up some of those oils in their porous surfaces.

Each time you comb your beard with a wooden comb, you are reintroducing a nourishing mixture of oils. You can even intentionally infuse oil in your wooden beard comb by soaking it in your beard oil of choice. After its thoroughly soaked, let it dry out before you use it again. A well-oiled wooden beard comb will keep your beard with just the right amount of shine.

Don’t just read about wooden beard combs. Use one for yourself! Especially if you scratch it often and keep reintroducing the problematic products or material to your skin, this can get really painful really fast.

To stop the pain, you need to determine exactly what, if anything, you are allergic to. A dermatologist or allergist can help you, and you can even use deductive reasoning to compare product ingredients and reactions to find the culprit. Many people are allergic to chemical compounds commonly used in skincare products. Smoky Mountain Beards products are all-natural. If you’re allergic to an unnatural ingredient, you may be able to stop the pain by shopping with us.

Dry Beard

If you’ve ever gone a few days without applying lotion, you know that dry skin becomes itchy and scaly. When you have coarse beard hair poking and prodding on top of that skin, the situation becomes even more painful.

Especially if you’re new to the wonderful world of beards, having a beard can prevent you from getting enough lotion and other hydrating moisturizing skincare products to your chin. Beard oil solves the issue. Water hydrates your beard, and beard oil seals it in. Get yourself a bottle, and don’t stop using it. You’ll feel the pain ease away.

Beard Acne

Beard acne happens when oils, dirt, bacteria, and even your own dead skin clog your pores. This build-up causes inflammation, which appears as those pesky red bumps we call beard acne. The good news is it's completely treatable.

Gentle cleansers with salicylic acid help to unclog your follicles. Wash your hands before you touch your beard and make sure to use clean towels and beard care tools. You don’t want to introduce bacteria to your skin. Wash your face regularly with a good quality beard-specific soap, like our Big Beard Soaps

Ingrown Hairs

Ingrown hairs happen when beard hair turns inward, penetrates the skin, and keeps on growing under the surface of the skin. Most ingrown hairs clear up on their own, but the ones that don’t are super painful.

If you have a problem, with ingrown hairs, avoid styles that include a lot of stubble. Having a beard makes you less susceptible in that sense, but you can still get them around the areas that you trim up. Although some men with super curly beards will disagree, letting your beard grow will drastically reduce the risk that you’ll get ingrown hairs.

While many bearded guys love growing their beards out, many of us do shave to start fresh from time to time. Even if you are letting your beard grow out, you may trim up the edges, which can still leave you susceptible to ingrown hairs. How can you prevent them?

What Causes Ingrown Hairs?

Sometimes, shaving or trimming causes ingrown hairs because you leave short, blunt hair close to the surface of the skin. This hair can easily turn in the wrong direction and penetrate the skin.

Even though it is pointing inward, the hair follicle and blood supply do not know that, so the rogue hair will keep on growing under the surface of your skin. As it grows longer, it forms a bump, and you’ll start to feel pain.

How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs Before You Shave

Give attention to the razors or trimmers you use when you shave. Check the instructions for any shaving tools you use to make sure you are not using them more often than you’re supposed to. Most disposable razors are only good for a maximum of ten shaves. For non-disposable shaving tools, invest in Barbicide. Even if you are the only person using the tool, you do not want to re-introduce bacteria to your face from the last shave.

Be sure that the tools you use on your face are only for your face. There are different pH levels and bacterial environments in different parts of the body. Your face is super sensitive, so don’t use a facial shaving tool on any other body part

How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs When You Shave

Although there may be style reasons for doing things differently, the way you shave can prevent ingrown hairs. You need to shave (or trim) in the direction in which your hair grows. Shaving in the opposite direction of how your hair naturally lies increases the chance that the shaving action will push some of the blunt stubble right underneath the surface of the skin.

Opt for styles without large sections of shorter hair and stubble. Instead, completely shave edges or any areas that you want to trim up, and leave the longer section of your beard full and long. Any strand can become an ingrown hair, but short stubble is far more prone to grow inward than a longer strand of hair.

After you shave, use a moisturizer, like our beard oil or beard balm, to make sure your beard is soft. A softer strand of hair is less likely to work its way underneath the surface of the skin. The action of working the moisturizer into the skin will also smooth down all of the hair follicles and move them away from the skin.

How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs Between Shaves

When it comes to your beard (and your whole body for that matter) you probably get way more ingrown hairs than you realize. The body is very resilient and has mechanisms to take care of problems on its own. That’s why plenty of ingrown hairs disappear without any intervention.

Ingrown hairs that are too large for the body to clear away are the peskiest and most painful ones. You usually recognize these because they will not go away without some sort of action on your part. Smaller ingrown hairs also become painful and noticeable if they get infected. This is another instance where you need to take action to get rid of the painful bump.

Preventing infections is a key method of preventing the pain of ingrown hairs. Having a good routine of washing your beard is key. The good shaving tool hygiene, mentioned above, also goes a long way in preventing infections.

Ingrown hairs are one of those hard-to-swallow facts of life, but there are plenty of things you can do to prevent them. Your run-of-the-mill in-grown hair can clear up with a little at-home TLC (or nothing at all.) When an ingrown hair just won’t go away and begins to show signs of infection (think redness, swelling, or pus,) it may be time to seek some OTC topical medication or the expertise of a doctor.
SYE Access How to Kick Beard Acne to The Curb https://www.smokymountainbeards.com/blogs/beard_blog/how-to-kick-beard-acne-to-the-curb Smoky Mountain Beard Co. - Beard Blog urn:uuid:dba56f3e-1c21-9cce-cd33-0e5063b8f4a7 Fri, 01 Apr 2022 23:07:35 -0700
Your beard is finally growing. You love the way it looks, but…what’s that? A pimple! You, my friend, just may be suffering from beard acne. Beard acne is a very common, very treatable problem. What can you do about it?

What Is Beard Acne?

To put it simply, beard acne happens when you develop acne underneath your beard. Acne is chronic pimples and irritation, usually on the face, that forms around clogged up hair follicles on the skin.

Most people recognize acne by red pimples, but the skin condition can also present itself as whiteheads and blackheads. Some acne sufferers do not even have visible bumps. Rather, they have subdermal oil buildups that swell the skin and are painful to the touch. All of these skin issues that happen everywhere else on the face can happen under your beard as well.

If you are already prone to acne on other parts of your skin, you may not be too surprised to find yourself with beard acne. However, many bearded guys who don’t have acne elsewhere experience beard acne for the first time. Why does this happen?

What Causes Beard Acne?

Beard acne can happen to the best of us. It happens when oils, dirt, bacteria, and even your own dead skin clog your pores. This build-up causes inflammation, which appears as those pesky red bumps we call beard acne.

Poor hygiene certainly is not going to help an acne problem, but hygiene is usually not the root cause of acne. Acne is a skin condition that comes about, often through no fault of your own. Some people have naturally oily skin, which is more prone to acne.

A clogged follicle is always the cause of acne. Some of the root causes of clogged follicles include bacteria, stress, and side effects of medicine. Bacteria introduced to the skin can cause inflammation and clog up the follicles. Stress and a carb-heavy diet can exacerbate beard acne if you already have it. Some steroids and medications that have testosterone can also cause beard acne.

How to Prevent Beard Acne

To prevent beard acne, prevent clogged follicles on the skin. Some of us can’t seem to keep our hands off of our beards. While a big ol’ beard is fun to stroke, that may be the cause of your beard acne. Hands come in contact with a lot of bacteria over the course of a day. When your hands introduce bacteria to your skin, you make yourself susceptible to bacterial beard acne.

Make sure to wash your beard regularly. When you do, be very thorough about rinsing your cleanser all the way out. A few leftover suds on the surface of your skin can cause just enough buildup to clog up your follicles. Our Big Beard Soap with activated charcoal is perfect for getting rid of follicle-clogging excess oils and dead skin.

The products you use on your beard can make or break your beard care routine. Be sure to use non-comedogenic products. Comedogenic products have ingredients that are known to clog pores. That’s why we use light oils in our products.

How to Treat Beard Acne

If you have beard acne, you may be able to treat yourself at home. Salicylic acid helps to break up all of the gunk that clogs up follicles. Find a gentle skin cleanser that has salicylic acid as an active ingredient, and implement it in your beard care regimen.

Be extra careful about washing your hands before touching your beard, cleaning your beard care tools, and only using clean towels on your beard. If your beard acne has a bacterial cause, you want to make sure that you aren’t reintroducing the bad bacteria to your skin.

If all else fails, it may be worth your while to see a dermatologist. Sometimes persistent acne is a sign of a deeper skin problem that needs medical attention for long-term relief.

Beard acne is far from a death sentence. It is very treatable. It’s not your fault, and it happens to the best of us. By all means, don’t let a few bumps break your sense of Beard Confidence!
SYE Access What Do Dermatologists Say About Beards? https://www.smokymountainbeards.com/blogs/beard_blog/what-do-dermatologists-say-about-beards Smoky Mountain Beard Co. - Beard Blog urn:uuid:e0da0d44-5189-f64a-299a-629482357a57 Fri, 25 Mar 2022 12:52:42 -0700
Is it just us, or have dermatologists suddenly become the most popular doctors on the Internet? If you wear a beard, you need to give attention to skincare. Essentially, beard care is chin care! If your chin skin is dry, inflamed, or infected, that is certainly going to affect how well your beard grows.

Don’t just take our word for it. It’s time to call in the experts! We scoured the Internet to learn what dermatologists are saying about beard and skincare.

Are Beards Bad for Skin?

Dermatologists say that beards are a-ok…as long as you take care of them. Beards give the skin an added layer of protection from sunlight. The biggest risk of having a beard is a lack of good hygiene, which can harbor dirt and debris on the skin. As long as you keep it clean, having a beard can actually help your skin because you avoid the nicks (and potential exposure to bacteria_ that come along with shaving. What else do derms have to say about beards?

Develop a Routine

What’s the best beard care routine? Dermatologists recommend washing your beard daily. After each wash, you need to moisturize and condition both your beard and the skin underneath it.

The name of the game is gentle. Article after article emphasizes the point that the face is already a sensitive area, and having a beard (especially if you want it to grow) means that you need to take even greater care. Reach for products made specifically for the face and beard.

Our all-natural Big Beard Soap is a gentle cleanser that doesn't skimp on cleaning power. Without proper protection, you are more prone to skin cancer. Dermatologists recommend applying sunscreen to the entire face, including the skin under the beard. If your beard is thick enough, you may be able to safely skip the chin skin, but it will never hurt you or your beard to apply sunscreen.

If you have a patchy beard, stubble, or a really thin beard, you still need to use sunscreen.

There are plenty of high-quality moisturizers out there than include sunscreen. Dermatologists recommend an SPF factor of at least 30 to protect the sensitive skin of the face.

Prevent Ingrown Hairs

Skincare is unique. We don’t all have the same needs. Some of us are more prone to ingrown hairs than others, but you don’t need to resign yourself to a life of pain and pulling.

While excessive and overly abrasive exfoliation can harm the skin and beard, dermatologists recommend exfoliating the beard no more than twice a week if you get ingrown hairs often. Don’t go rubbing body scrub on your chin. Instead, use a gentle exfoliant specifically made for the face.

Unless you have an underlying skin condition, you’re unlikely to find a dermatologist that tells you not to grow a beard. Keep your beard clean and conditioned. Stick to your healthy beard care regimen, and don’t forget to use sunscreen. Last but not least, build onto your basic routine of cleaning and conditioning with additional TLC, like exfoliating if you have unique skin problems.
SYE Access 4 Easy Ways to Style Your Beard https://www.smokymountainbeards.com/blogs/beard_blog/4-easy-ways-to-style-your-beard Smoky Mountain Beard Co. - Beard Blog urn:uuid:6439dda6-1778-2592-6db9-1014d72c822c Fri, 25 Mar 2022 12:49:38 -0700
Beard styles have come a long way. The hair between will connect your beard to your mustache forming a not-so-round circle. Use an electric trimmer to cut away the bulk of your hair on your neck, chin, and sideburns.

Be sure to leave the hair on your mustache, chin, and between the two untouched. Next, use shaving gel and a razor to completely clear away all of the hair left behind by the trimmer. Finally, define the lines of your circle beard. A razor or a smaller trimmer should do the trick.

Balbo Beard

The jawline is the southern border for the balbo beard. Form a straight line just under the chin at the jawline, and extend that line to the back of the jawline just under each ear. All hair that falls under that straight line gets shaved away. Next, cut a straight line just above the jawline, extending from the sides of the chin to just under the ears, on each side of the face. This will form a thick patch of hair, and everything above the upper line gets shaved away.

The line should be thinnest at the corners of the jawline and thickest at the center of the chin. Carefully shave away any hair that connects the mustache to the beard, but leave the mustache intact. Depending on the look you’re going for, you may want to trim away some of the bulk of the beard that is left over, and it never hurts to use a razor to make all of the lines extra crisp.

Chinstrap Beard

For a chinstrap beard, you want to get rid of all of the hair that is not on the chin. That means you remove everything from your cheeks, neck, and mustache. If you’re looking for something easy to execute, this is your style.

Chinstrap beards are versatile. You can have a really bushy chin strap or a super close-shaved one. It is has become trendy to wear pencil-thin chin strap beards, but thicker ones are still a tried and true style. Make this easy style your own!

Mutton Chops Beard

A mutton chop is essentially a variation of the chin strap beard. Keep your sideburns. Keep your mustache, and the hair that connects it to your beard. Next, shave the part of the chin that runs parallel to your mustache just under your mouth completely away. Shave down the sideburns to make them thinner, and trim down the jawlines to about the width of your average chinstrap beard. There you have it! You’ve got a debonair style!

If you’re going to take the time to trim your beard into the perfect style, maintain it well so that the style will last. After the irritation of a shave, beard balm is very soothing. There aren’t any foods that resemble men with lustrous, thick beards, but your dietary decisions can help your beard. Hair is an extension of the body. Giving your body the right fuel supports having the beard of your dreams. What foods are best for beards?

What Makes a Beard Grow?

Beard growth happens in a natural cycle. Everyone’s hair grows at about a rate of about half an inch per month. Some beards are naturally patchy due to genetics. Genetic factors can also play a role in the way your beard grows.

Beyond genetics, length retention determines whether or not you notice that your beard is growing. Some beards break off just as much as they grow each month, and this makes it look like the beard is not growing at all. Some shedding is natural, but you will notice visible growth when more hair grows than sheds.

Testosterone levels can also influence beard growth. Higher levels of testosterone support having a fuller beard. Lower testosterone levels are one of many factors that can cause a patchy beard or one that seems like it just won’t grow.

We can’t exactly control our genes, but there are two factors related to beard growth that you can control. By keeping your beard clean and properly moisturized, you maintain a healthy environment that supports length retention. When you eat the right foods, you give your body enough nutrients to support healthy growth.

Best Nutrients for Beard Growth

Being overweight can reduce the level of testosterone in the body. It is important to keep your diet balanced overall, so that you are not decreasing your testosterone levels.

Zinc supports healthy testosterone levels. Hair is protein, so having a healthy dose of protein in your diet is important for a healthy beard with strong hair follicles. Omega-3 fatty acids also have protein and some of the vitamins and minerals that support healthy hair. Whole grains have a mineral called silicon, which keeps hair shiny and strong. Vitamins A-E also support growth and healthier hair follicles.

Foods that Promote Beard Growth

Here are examples of foods that are high in the key nutrients that support healthy beard growth:

Foods with Zinc

Beans

Nuts

Blackberries

Pomegranates

Shitake mushrooms

Spinach

Broccoli

Foods with healthy proteins

Greek yogurt

Cottage cheese

Lentils

Turkey

Chicken

Lamb

Tofu

Foods with whole grains

Whole grain oatmeal

Brown rice

Whole wheat bread

Whole wheat pasta

Popcorn

Buckwheat

Quinoa

Foods with omega-3 fatty acids

Salmon

Avocado

Nuts

Mackerel

Oysters

Foods with vitamins A-E

Tomatoes

Cantaloupe

Liver

Leafy greens

Citrus fruits

Cod liver oil

Fortified milk

Sunflower seeds

Peanut butter

Pumpkin

SYE Access How to Use Solid Cologne—A Detailed Primer for First-Timers https://www.smokymountainbeards.com/blogs/beard_blog/how-to-use-solid-cologne-a-detailed-primer-for-first-timers Smoky Mountain Beard Co. - Beard Blog urn:uuid:8dfefa87-0cde-9d59-211c-f7303a4049c5 Fri, 04 Mar 2022 19:12:46 -0800
For the month of March 2022, our product of the month is solid cologne. While our solid cologne is a staple for many members of the Smoky Mountain Beards family, we recognize that this particular men's grooming product is not as common as something like beard oil or regular cologne.

The number one reason men don’t try solid cologne is that they are not sure how to use it or if it works as effectively as the spray colognes they’re used to. There are plenty of things that make solid cologne a great choice, but how exactly do you use the stuff? We’ve got you covered!

How Much Solid Cologne Should You Use?

With solid cologne, less is truly more. Smoky Mountain Beard solid colognes have just the right amount of fragrance. Since the scent is concentrated in solid wax, you don’t have to slather yourself in the product to get all-day use out of it.

All it takes is one or two light swipes or swirls around the tin to get enough product. Depending on how much fragrance you’d like to apply, use the flat side of just one or two fingertips. Don’t dig into the cologne. Just gently glide your fingers across the product. Ideally, a single use will not cause any indentations in the wax. One tin of Smoky Mountain Beards solid cologne should last even the most heavy-handed scent lover for months.

Where Should You Apply Solid Cologne?

Solid cologne works best when you apply it to your pulse points. These are the parts of your body a person would touch if they were going to take your pulse. The lower jaw and the sides of the wrist make awesome application sites.

When you put the cologne on your pulse points, the blood that passes by and makes your pulse palpable throughout the day will create just enough heat and motion to keep reviving the smell of the cologne.

How Should You Apply Solid Cologne?

If it’s your first time using solid cologne, just apply one swipe of the finger’s worth of product per pulse point. Some guys put the product on both wrists and both sides of the jaw. You may prefer one of each, or just one or the other. Find what works for you.

Once you’ve got a portion of cologne on your fingers, dab the product on the pulse point. Next, gently massage the solid cologne into the skin. You don’t want to smear it everywhere, so it’s best to stick to using the flat pads of your fingers to spread it around. Remember that you want to focus most of the product on the pulse point.
That completes the job. With minimal effort, you’re going to smell manly and awesome all day long. Life is complicated enough. Smelling good should be simple. Order a tin of solid cologne to give yourself the gift that just keeps on giving. SYE Access How to Trim Your Beard Like a Pro https://www.smokymountainbeards.com/blogs/beard_blog/how-to-trim-your-beard-like-a-pro Smoky Mountain Beard Co. - Beard Blog urn:uuid:0286537a-cfb4-3033-55b7-92604f0126d5 Thu, 03 Mar 2022 17:37:04 -0800
From the standpoint of comfort and Beard Confidence, there is nothing worse than not loving what you see every time you look in the mirror. We’ve been there before, and having a beard that you think is unsightly is no fun.

For the love of good grooming, please put the shaving cream down! If you can’t get to the barber, you have more choices than shaving or looking like a sasquatch. You can trim your beard at home, and you can do a good job at it!

Let us show you have to take your beard trimming skills to the next level. If you already know what you’re doing but you want to know how to do it better, you’re in the right place. (We can also help you here if you still need to know the basics.)

Trim Downwards

Remember that your goal is a trim, not a chop. With a trim, you’re looking to clean or refine lines and make the beard neater. This is why it is crucial to trim from the top down.

Guide your clipper down the length of your beard, just as if you were brushing the beard. This helps to smooth the remaining hair as you cut, and it will trim down the girth of the beard rather than hacking away at your length.

Brush As You Go

Don’t save brushing until the end of your trim. Just like momma always said about cooking, you’ve got to clean as you go. There’s nothing worse than finishing a style only to find your beard looking just as rough in a few days.

To keep things looking smooth, put the clippers down and brush a little during the process. This serves two purposes. First, you get a better idea of what the finished product will look like. Second, you can make the finished product better by coaxing out any leftover tangles or fly aways.

Next, use the clippers in the same spot one more time to make sure you get everything cleaned up. Depending on how big your beard is and how much of a trim you’re going for, you may need to repeat the process several times.

Don’t Forget Flair

You can find hundreds of talking heads on the Internet telling you about the best tools, the best styles, and the best techniques. While taking good advice is never bad, remember that you are the one in control of your own Beard Confidence.

The best tool for you is the one that you are comfortable using. You’ll need practice to improve at any skill, but using a tool that is cumbersome or unfamiliar to you can lead to accidentally cutting way more than you meant to.

There are theories out there about which lines look right, which parts of the beard should be thin, and which should be thick. This is what looks good on the average guy, but you have a unique face shape and unique tastes. Rules are there to guide, but it’s ok to break the rules a little too. It is your face after all!

We believe in you. It’s a pesky problem that a lot of men face. Last week, we dived into some of the most common root causes of beard dandruff. This week, we’ll discuss a few things you can do to make beadruff be gone.

Fungi and seborrheic dermatitis are unlikely to clear on their own, but there are a few overarching beard, skincare, and health habits that can fix some of the non-medical causes of beard dandruff.

Have a Balanced Routine

Skin needs a perfect balance. It can’t be dry as the desert. It can’t be soaking wet, and it won’t react well to being constantly shellacked with oil either.

Wash your beard at a frequency that works for your skin and lifestyle. If your skin is oily, you may need to wash it more often. If your skin is dry, you may need to wash your beard less often. Other lifestyle factors, like sweating often or living in a very dry or very humid environment, may alter how often your wash your beard.

Find the Right Soap

Be sure that your beard soap is not drying out your skin or flaring up an allergy. Our Big Beard Soap has a blend of ingredients that moisturize the skin, promote moisture retention, and thoroughly cleanse the beard.

Pay Attention to Allergies

Contact dermatitis, in other words being allergic to something you put in contact with your skin, can also cause beardruff. Redness and itchiness associated with dandruff may be a sign of inflammation, which could point to allergies rather than skin issues. Anyone can be allergic to anything. It may not always be a chemical. You can also be allergic to essential oils and natural ingredients. Some people are even allergic to certain types of fabrics.

Don’t Mistake Oil for Moisture

Both your skin and hair need hydration. The simplest source of hydration is water, and there are moisturizers, often products that include water as a primary ingredient, that help to retain moisture longer than water could stay. Oil provides nutrients, and it seals in moisture. Oil is not a moisturizer, and oil does not provide hydration. If you use oil on a dry beard, you are sealing in dryness and preventing moisture from coming in. This will lead to painfully dry skin that is prone to flakes.

Develop Healthy Habits

Skin is the body’s largest organ, and it is an important member of the immune system. Often, skin problems and immune problems go hand in hand. While skin problems, like beard dandruff, do have other root causes, some skin problems are reflections of greater systemic issues. If you’re not a healthy person overall, your skin may be the first organ to reveal the problem. Get enough sleep. Drink enough water. Eat a balanced diet. If you know you have a food sensitivity, stay away from that food. Food that doesn’t sit well with your body may not make you violently ill or send you into anaphylactic shock, but it may still be terrible for your body.
SYE Access Seeking Answers: What Does Having a Beard Mean to You? https://www.smokymountainbeards.com/blogs/beard_blog/seeking-answers-what-does-having-a-beard-mean-to-you Smoky Mountain Beard Co. - Beard Blog urn:uuid:1c5f96c2-acca-956a-5eed-08c50d37290c Sat, 26 Feb 2022 22:09:56 -0800
At Smoky Mountain Beards, we believe that the people who use our products should be at the center of everything we do. When it comes to getting rid of beard dandruff, it is super important to understand why you have dandruff in the first place. The solution to one potential cause could exasperate another potential cause. Read on to:

Learn to identify the differences between the most common causes of beard dandruff

Learn at-home remedies for beard dandruff

Find out when it's important to see a doctor

Dry Skin

Sometimes, dandruff is just flakes of dry skin. In that case, the solution is to nourish and moisturize the skin so that it’s not so dry that it flakes off. Dandruff from dry skin is often white in appearance.

Around your body, bits of your skin are constantly sloughing off. That’s a part of the natural cycle of making room for the new skin that your body creates. The solution to this type of dandruff is often a very simple one. You’re supposed to have dead skin that flakes away, but you don’t want that skin to sit in your beard and create an unsightly problem. You need to get those flakes out of your beard.

Make sure to gently agitate the skin in and around your beard whenever your wash your beard or apply products. Although flakes may fall down the length of your beard, they all start on the skin. Use the pads of your fingers, not your nails, to really work products into the skin and lift any flakes up and off the surface of the skin. Then, use your favorite comb or brush to focus on gently scraping the surface of the skin and stroking down the length of your beard. This will physically remove the flakes.

When you focus the products on your skin, you will also be solving another problem. Sometimes, dandruff comes from the skin being too dry or simply dirty from a buildup of oils and dead skin. If you’re really working both soap and moisturizers into the skin on a regular basis, you can eliminate these problems.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

Oily skin can also cause beardruff. If there is an overproduction of sebum on your beard, you can develop a skin condition called seborrheic dermatitis. This happens when you have so much sebum that the natural oil produced by your skin builds up into yellowish scales. When these scales flake up, they can cause dandruff that has more of a yellow hue.

Yellowish dandruff is a tell-tell sign of seborrheic dermatitis. Seborrheic dermatitis may also be apparent when you examine the surface of your skin. Regular dandruff is white and flaky. Before the particles flake off, seborrheic dermatitis looks more like scaly plates that may cover the surface of the skin and enmesh hair follicles within them.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin condition best left treated by a doctor. It can have a variety of root causes. A medical professional can figure out why it’s happening and determine how to treat it. It could be something as simple as using too much oil in your beard care routine or something as complicated as a food sensitivity or autoimmune problem.

Fungus

Malassezia globosa is a fairly common type of fungus. Like bacteria, fungus is a part of our world, so it does not always cause a problem. However, this otherwise harmless form of fungus is a common cause of beard dandruff. When Malassezia gets lodged in the hair follicles, it causes inflammation. To try to fight the fungus, skin cells start to slough off much faster than usual, and you get lots of flakes in your beard.

A serious issue with fungus only has one treatment, and that is medication. There are various over-the-counter anti-fungal shampoos, and you can get a prescription from a doctor. Look for active ingredients like ketoconazole, pyrithione zinc, and selenium sulfide.

Find one that works for you and implement it into your beard care routine according to the instructions. Usually, getting rid of any fungus is a long game. Even if the dandruff clears quickly, which it probably will, you may need to continue using the anti-fungal shampoo for a month or more to make sure that the fungus goes away and stays away.

To skip the trial and error of trying to find the right shampoo for you, a dermatologist may be able to identify the exact type of shampoo that is best for your scenario. Some medicated shampoos are a little on the harsh side so you may need to increase your use of beard oil and other products to nourish the skin while using medicated shampoo.

As another means of long-term fungus prevention, look at what factors create a good environment for fungus in your beard. Excess water and sugar both cause an overgrowth of fungus.

Different hair follicles have different levels of porosity. One man may be able to leave the house with a damp beard and have a bone-dry beard within the hour because his hair follicles release water easily. Another man may leave the house with a damp beard and still have a little water left in his beard at the end of the day because his follicles do not release water easily. Whether you’re preparing for an interview, a first date, or just trying to make a new friend, life is much easier when you have a strong sense of confidence. Here are three things that any man can do to instantly increase his confidence:

Practice Conversation

Even in our modern age, so many social interactions hinge on talking. Some people are introverted, and some people are extroverted. There’s nothing wrong with being either way. If you're a naturally quiet person, you don’t have to become the life of the party to be confident. However, propping up the wall when you want to be in the center of conversation can kill your confidence. Having all eyes on you at the wrong time and place can also make one feel very unconfident.

The key to conversation is to remember that it’s a two way street. Give a little. Take a little. Remember, that the people you’re talking to are normal people just like you. They may be just as nervous as you.

Common interests make a great conversation starter, and people love to talk about themselves. You’ll always have something to say if you can tie a common interest into something about the other person. Here are a few examples:

The weather

It sure is cold out today. Do you like cold weather?

Are you ready for the hurricane?

Do you think it will really snow next Friday?

Work

My name is ___. I work in ____ department. How long have you worked at this company?

What is your favorite part about working in ___ industry?

Big News

Are you planning on watching the Superbowl (or other big sporting event)?

Did you hear about the new ____ coming to town?

What’s your favorite local hangout?

Don’t Go Changin’

Far too many men fall into the trap of believing that to be confident they have to be different. Confidence is all about presenting the best version of yourself inside and out. Showing up as the best version of yourself (personality wise as well as appearance wise) may include making a few changes, but it does not include a total overhaul of your personality.

To be confident, you do not need to be like some guy you think is confident. Rather, you need to become more comfortable with who you are and the way others perceive you. There is value in each one of us. We may not all be six feet tall and bulging with muscles. We may not all have endless tales of wild weekends to impart at a dinner party, but we’re all worth knowing. It takes confidence to be at peace with who you are and realize that you don’t need to change.

Attempting to have a Steve Urkel to Stefan Urquette transformation is to confidence what Kryptonite is to Superman. If you’re trying too hard, you’re not comfortable, and it shows. You’re more likely to repel, rather than attract, people if you’re trying to be someone you’re not.

Be Beard Confident

Beard confidence isn’t about having the perfect beard. It’s about having a beard that is perfect for you. You might have started your beard journey because you liked the way some other guy’s beard looked, but you’ve certainly realized by now that no two beards are the same. Beards are a source of pride and joy for many men, but beard problems can also be the exact opposite of a confidence boost. Here are quick ways to fix the most common beard-related confidence detractors:

The itch

Beards can be very itchy as they start to grow. Constantly picking at your face can make a man feel very self-conscious. Beard oil can help to condition the skin and hair and soothe the itch. Even if others don’t notice, some men who grow a beard are uncomfortable with its natural scent. If you don’t like the way you smell, it’s pretty hard to be confident. To counteract this problem, moisturize your beard with scented beard oil. Women who love beards are very vocal. Women who hate beards are just as emphatic. Companies that sell shaving products have videos about women who hate beards, and companies that sell beard products have just the opposite.

Smoky Mountain Beards is a company founded by a man and his wife. Our founder’s wife loves his marvelous beard. Our team has been entertained by reading reviews from women who love the scent of our products. They also love the look and feel of their man’s beard after using our products. Our not-so-scientific research methods lead us to infer that these women love themselves a bearded man.

In reality, there’s just one woman we want to keep happy. Just like we tend to have types and preferences when it comes to physical attraction, some women really dig guys with beards. Others, not so much.

Rather than feeling so strongly about it, most women are somewhere in between. Usually, women who express disdain toward beards are actually concerned about poor beard hygiene.

If a beard does not look to be well kept, a woman may jump to unsavory conclusions about the man behind the beard. When a woman goes in for a kiss, she has to put her face pretty close to a beard. Especially if she’s not used to dating a mustachioed man, she can be a little concerned about all of those tall tales about bits of food and who knows what else being stuck inside a beard.

No matter how full or long your beard is, you can keep it neat in appearance. Comb it every now and then, and develop a routine of regular trimming. A great beard that is well-groomed can be super attractive, even for a woman who does not like beards.

We all like what we like, and no one, man or woman, should be faulted by that, but take it from some of us older guys who have had beards for a long time. With regular cologne, most men have to resort to reapplying throughout the day to keep the scent going. With solid cologne, that’s unnecessary. Solid cologne is the scent that keeps on giving. Here’s why you need to use it:

Long-Lasting Scent

The fragrance is based in wax rather than water, so it has more staying power from the start. The application of solid cologne also makes a difference. Solid cologne is made to apply at the pulse points. It’s easy to remember because these are the same places you would take your pulse, namely your wrist and your neck. These are warm spots where blood flows freely. Your body will naturally keep the wax of the solid cologne warm and fragrant throughout the day, giving you extra boosts of your fresh scent throughout the day.

Our solid colognes come in five signature scents. Bootlegger smells like sandalwood and bourbon. Whiskey Barrell is a blend of vanilla and oak. Cabin Smoke has notes of mahogany, tobacco, and spices. Bay Rum is the star of our White Lightnin’ fragrance, and Cumberland blends the aromas of cedar and leather.

Portable

If you did need to keep on reapplying your solid cologne, it would be very easy to. Our solid cologne comes in a thin, one-ounce metal can. It’s compact enough that you can put it in your pocket or your bag. You don’t have to worry about a glass bottle leaking fragrance everywhere. It’s also great for traveling because you don’t have to worry about getting a liquid in a small enough container to take on a plane.

Easy to Use

Our solid colognes come in small containers because, as they say, a dab will do ya. You don’t need to rub a copious amount of solid cologne all over yourself. Just massage a little into your wrist or on your neck, and you’re all set for the day.

Sometimes wearing cologne can be downright embarrassing if the smell is just too overbearing. Solid cologne is a much tamer scent. It blends with and enhances your natural smell. To others, you’ll seem like a man who just naturally smells good, rather than a man who learned his fragrance habits from middle schoolers after gym class who still believe that a cloud of body spray can replace a good shower.

Quality Ingredients

Smoky Mountain Beards’ solid colognes are based in beeswax. Jojoba oil is the carrier oil, and there are other oils for the fragrance of your choice. There are no phthalates or alcohol, so you don’t need to worry about drying out or irritating your skin. Since our solid colognes are made with wax and oil, you can wash them away with a little soap and water when you want to. You don’t have to worry about the smell sticking to you no matter what.

Solid cologne is your ticket to ride the roller coaster of smelling amazing without a lot of fuss. There’s nothing worse than having to do a herky-jerky start and stop because of endless tangles when all you want to do is comb your beard and get on with your day.

Some would say that tangles are just another part of the bearded experience. It’s not reasonable to expect that your beard will never tangle, but there is plenty you can do to prevent excess tangling.

Embrace your texture

To be clear, no one’s hair is naturally tangled, and straight hair is not immune to tangles. However, some beard textures are more prone to having a tangle problem than others.

The hair on the top of your head may be straight, but your beard may be naturally curly. You can’t do the same things to straight and curly hair and expect the same results. You may not exactly have Shirley Temple-esque tendrils flowing down your chin, but, if your beard is not exactly straight, this advice is for you.

Beards that are coily, curly, and anything in between need oil on a regular basis. With straight hair, sebum (the body’s natural oil) has a straight path down the hair follicle. With textured hair, there are twists and turns, and gravity doesn’t exactly make it easy for sebum to travel down a path that is not straight. When you keep your follicles lubricated with nutritious conditioning beard oil, it is much harder for them to tangle into pesky knots.

Hair with more texture to it is usually easier to style, comb, and detangle when damp (not dripping wet!) rather than dry. With that being said, there are some guys who learn that trying to detangle after applying water is just a way to cement the knots. Learn to embrace the beard you have and rock it with Beard Confidence. Get to know its natural texture, and learn what works best for you.

Use the right tools

You could be causing the tangles by using plastic combs and brushes. Plastic causes static. This isn’t a major issue when we use plastic combs on our heads, but on a small beard, a plastic comb can wreak havoc.

Wooden combs are perfect for beards because they have wider teeth, better for the thicker, coarser hair follicles that some men naturally grow in their beards. Wooden combs can also absorb oil, whether that’s the sebum naturally found in your skin or the beard oil you use. The comb leeches out some of that oil as you use it, so it helps to condition and detangle at the same time as combing.

When it comes to beard brushes, boar bristles are where it’s at! They are strong enough to actually move your hairs in the right direction without being so strong that they cause damage.

Trim Split Ends

Split ends flay out in a million weird directions. Having thin pieces of weakened hair poking their way into otherwise orderly follicles can cause some gnarly knots. That’s why regular trimming is so important.

Especially for longer beards, the bottom of your beard may be constantly brushing up against the rough fibers of your clothes. If most of your tangles seem to start at the bottom of your beard, split ends could certainly be the cause.

Split ends don’t just stop at a certain point. Left unchecked, they keep on going up higher and higher until the whole follicle is split in two. Even if you’re trying with all of your might to retain length, split ends are not going to help you in your endeavors. They are unhealthy follicles and their presence can cause knots, which can eventually lead to you ripping out healthy follicles when you try to comb or brush them out. When you regularly trim your ends, you’re getting rid of millimeters per month, rather than being forced to slough away inches later down the line.

Tangles happen to the best of us, but there is plenty we can do to make sure we deal with them as infrequently as possible.
SYE Access How to Trim Your Beard https://www.smokymountainbeards.com/blogs/beard_blog/how-to-trim-your-beard Smoky Mountain Beard Co. - Beard Blog urn:uuid:924e8754-43e0-c2bb-3cb2-3b87b260e8ec Tue, 18 Jan 2022 13:18:59 -0800
As people who strive for Beard Confidence, we know more than anyone else what a struggle it can be to grow a beard for months only to have all of your hard work come to naught.

When it comes to trimming your beard, you want to make sure everything is uniform. The worst thing is thinking you’ve done a great job only to take a look in the mirror and find that you’ve just made your pride and joy lopsided. Here’s what you need to know to get it right the first time.

Know the Process

Start with a clean and dry beard. Big Beard Soap gives the right balance of moisture and cleaning power. Dampness or products could elongate curly or wiry hair. You need to see how your hair looks dry so that you can cut it to the right length.

Next, use your favorite styling tool, either a beard brush or a beard comb, to comb your beard from roots to ends. Make sure you get all of the tangles out and make sure you guide all the strands of your beard to face the same direction. A good beard brush may be perfect for straightening out a shorter beard. If you’ve got a longer beard, a comb may be just what you need to get all of your strands going the same direction.

When it comes to trimming your beard, you need to color inside the lines, so to speak. In order to color inside the lines, you first have to know where they are. That’s why the first step will be some fine trimming to clean up the lines of your beard. These are the thinner sections of hair that form a border around your beard. Finally, you can focus on trimming the length.

If you’re just starting your beard journey, it’s best to let your beard grow freely for about a month before you start trimming it. After that first month, you can trim your beard once or twice a month, according to your preference.

Know Your Tools

Getting your lines right is going to make a world of a difference between whether your beard looks right or rough. The key to all of this fine trimming is to use the right tools.

This isn’t easy to accomplish with your average four or five-blade razor. You need something that’s better at creating fine lines. An electric trimmer makes life a whole lot easier. If you’re more of a straight razor man, that can work too, but make sure you really know what you’re doing and have a nice, steady hand.

To trim the length of your beard, use beard scissors. Don’t use household scissors. Although they may be sharp enough to get the job done, they are not meant for hair. Their beveled edges crush the hair shaft, leaving split ends in their wake. Using scissors meant for hair is a step in the right direction because they won’t damage the hair shaft, but they could be so large that they are cumbersome. Beard scissors are small enough and designed to make the angles you’ll need to trim a beard.

Trimming the length is likely the easiest part. Use a fine-toothed comb as a guide to make sure your cuts are even. Cut to the length you prefer and trim away any stray hairs that are left behind.

Know Your Lines

If you’re going to get those all-important borders of your beard right, you need to know where your lines should be. The concept behind the lines is that you shave away all hair below a line for the lower ones and above the line for the higher ones. This will give your beard a cleaner, sleeker look.

This will be a combination of following the natural shape of your face and making a few changes to the style you prefer. A line might naturally rest straight, but you might like a curved look better. Understand the thought behind the guidelines. Them, do what you need to do to feel Beard Confident.

For good optics, your neckline should rest right above your Adam’s apple and it should follow the natural shape of your jawline. The sides of your neckline should end underneath your sideburns so that you could draw a straight imaginary vertical line from the top of your sideburns to the bottom of your neckline.

The cheek line is a horizontal line between the intersection of your beard and sideburns and the corner of your mouth. This line can be diagonal or straight depending on the shape of your face and the style you prefer.

The top of your upper lip and the top of your mustache should run perpendicular to form your mustache line. Aside from starting at the top of your top lip, there are no natural lines for the mustache line. This too is a style point. If you want a pencil-thin ‘stache, go for it. If you want your mustache to knock on the door of your nostrils, knock yourself out.

After each trim, use beard balm to smooth down your hairs into their new position. Practice makes perfect! As you start to trim your beard more often, you’ll be happier with the results each time. The Smoky Mountain man is fashioned after historic bootleggers and moonshiners of the region. That’s why January 17th, National Bootlegger day, is a very special occasion in this neck of the woods.

National Bootlegger Day celebrates the history of the so-called outlaws of the Prohibition Era. If you’re ready for a not-so-boring history lesson, you’re in the right place.

What Is a Bootlegger?

Back in the 1800s, the term bootlegger rose to popularity when traders hid flasks of spirits in the leg of their boots. In the Prohibition Era, bootleggers became household names. Laws around the sale of alcohol were already a point of contention in the Smoky Mountains before Prohibition.

In Ireland and Scotland, the production and enjoyment of moonshine were quite popular. When people from that part of the world started to settle in the Appalachian Mountains, they brought their homemade spirits with them. Locals made a pretty penny selling their moonshine to one another. Things (almost) came to a screeching halt when a hefty excise tax was added to the sale of moonshine. That’s what drove many moonshiner operations underground, and they had to get even more secretive when Prohibition became the law.

The drink that we all know and love today started being called moonshine because its makers were in hiding. They had to ply their trade under the hazy light of the moon when they were less likely to be caught. The story doesn’t stop there. It gets even cooler!

Scarface and the Smoky Mountains

Al “Scarface” Capone is a big part of the reason that National Bootleggers Day happens on January 17th. January 17th is his birthday. The notorious mobster rose through the ranks of the toughest street gangs of Chicago in the 20s and early 30s. He made a lot of his money through racketeering in Chicago, but his branch of the Colosimo mob was also heavily involved in the illegal production and sale of alcohol during Prohibition.

Rumor has it that Al Capone had a storage site for the illegal spirits somewhere in the Smoky Mountains. If the stories are true, he would smuggle his goods from the Smokies to sell them in Chicago speakeasies. There has never been solid evidence for this rumor, but it certainly makes a very interesting local legend.

Bootleggers Day Sale

If the Bootlegger scent is your favorite, this is your time to stock up. In honor of the holiday, we’re launching a Bootlegger Bundle for a limited time.

The Bootlegger Bundle Includes:

1 Bootlegger Scented Beard Oil

1 Bootlegger Scented Beard Balm

1 Bootlegger Scented Big Beard Soap

1 Bootlegger Scented Solid Cologne

AND

1 FREE Beard Comb

Price: $79.99 National Bootlegger's Day Bundle

Our Bootlegger scent is inspired by the kind of great liquor that you can only find in distilleries around the Smokies. We spend so much time and effort trying to make our beards fuller, longer, and better. All the while, the hair on top of our heads, the stuff we thought we had under control, is slowly but surely thinning.

If you’re losing your hair, don’t feel so bad. It happens to the best of us, even when we’re young. According to the Cleveland Clinic,

“Half of the men in the world experience hair loss by age 50. About 70% of men will lose hair as they get older. And 25% of bald men see first signs of hair loss before age 21.”

Whether you’re in your 20s or your 90s, statistics show that you’re likely to have some issue with hair loss or full-on balding at some point in this journey called life.

Let’s put first things first. There is nothing wrong with rocking a chrome dome. You may know us for promoting Beard Confidence, but we’re all for confidence in general. Confidence has nothing to do with the way you look and everything to do with the way you feel. If you love your hair, we love it for you. If you don’t like the way your hair makes you feel, we want to give you the resources you need to improve your sense of confidence.

If you’re not sure about your hair loss, here are a few not-so-scientific facts to pep you up. Some people think bald men are more attractive than guys with hair. Jason Alexander became a household name starring as Seinfeld’s George Costanza while going bald. Dwayne Johnson was People’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2016, and he’s been bald for most of his career.

Despite all of this evidence, we know that there are some of us out there who aren’t ready to dive into being bald or having thinning hair just yet. That’s ok! Thanks to modern technology. There are plenty of solutions. This is the first edition of our series about combatting hair loss.

What Is Rogaine?

Rogaine is an oldie but goodie in the hair loss market. You may also see Rogaine and similar products referred to as minoxidil. Minoxidil is the drug that makes Rogaine work. Rogaine is a topical solution that usually comes in foam and liquid forms.

Rogaine is made specifically to treat male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia. The most common culprits for male pattern baldness are hormones and genetics. Men who have androgenetic alopecia lose hair in a distinct M-shaped pattern that starts with a receding hairline. If your hair loss has a different root cause, Rogaine may not be effective.

For some, Rogaine is a wonder drug. For others, it doesn’t work at all. Rogaine claims to help thinning hair start to grow back full again. However, this is not a quick fix. The process can take up to three months to start seeing results. To keep on having good results, you may need to make Rogaine a long-term component of your grooming routine. For some people, Rogaine only stops hair loss, but it does not help with growth. Just like most other things that are supposed to help us look better, results with Rogaine may vary greatly from person to person.

Rogaine works because it makes the blood vessels dilate. Scientists haven’t nailed down the exact reason that Rogaine makes hair grow or stops hair loss. One hypothesis is that dilated blood vessels at the hair follicle allow the follicle to get the nutrients and blood flow it needs to start growing again.

How Does Rogaine Work?

Rogaine comes in different percentage strengths based on the percentage of minoxidil in the solution. Most people start with 2%. Whether you’re using the foam or liquid version, you use it the same way.

Each time you use Rogaine, inspect your scalp to make sure that the skin is intact. You can’t apply Rogaine on top of cuts, scrapes, or sunburn. It’s also a good idea to delay treatment if the skin is red or irritated in any way.

Next, wash and dry your hair. Part your hair for easy access to the bald section of your scalp. The box will tell you exactly how much to use, but apply a generous amount of Rogaine directly to the bald part of your scalp before working it in. Be sure to direct Rogaine to the bald scalp alone. Do not rub it into your hair.

If you are going to use any other stylers or moisturizers on your hair, be sure that the Rogaine is completely dry before you proceed with the rest of your hair care routine. When you’re done applying Rogaine, thoroughly wash and dry your hands.

What Are the Risks of Rogaine?

Before people were rubbing it in their scalp, Rogaine was actually taken by mouth as a treatment for high blood pressure. The drug successfully treated the high blood pressure, but it also made some of the patients grow hair all over their bodies. That’s when it was discovered that Rogaine helps you grow hair.

Rogaine is very safe topically as long as you use it properly. If you use Rogaine on a scalp with open cuts, it can enter the bloodstream, and it will start to act as a high blood pressure medication. It almost goes without saying, but that is a very unsafe situation because blood pressure can become dangerously low.

It’s a pretty rare allergy, but some people are allergic to Rogaine. If you’re one of those people, you should immediately discontinue use. Redness or itchiness on the scalp is a sign of a reaction. People with severe allergies can even go into anaphylactic shock.

Another risk of Rogaine is getting it on other parts of your body. Rogaine is a hair growth treatment, so it can make hair grow anywhere it happens to land. That is why it is so important to apply it to a completely dry scalp, let it dry before doing anything else to your head, and be vigilant about handwashing after treatment.

Rogaine is one of the most tried and true methods for combatting male pattern baldness. It’s a low-cost, low-risk option. What about hair loss that’s not associated with male pattern baldness? Stay tuned for the next edition of our hair loss series.
SYE Access Zeus Beard Fall-Scented Beard Oils - Review with Ambassador Tristan Chamberlin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQQeQUDqChA Zeus Beard urn:uuid:929af28a-8afd-9a3f-55e3-7b7d77b22a60 Sun, 03 Oct 2021 07:52:04 -0700 Zeus Beard Zeus Beard Fall-Scented Beard Oils - Review with Ambassador Tristan Chamberlin "They say that smell is the closest thing tied to memory...I can bring about memories of your childhood, it can make you remember a first love or even the birth of your first child." - Zeus Ambassador Tristan Chamberlin Zeus Ambassador Tristan Chamberlin talks about his favorite scents of Zeus Beard Oils - Verbena Lime, Spiced Maple and Italian Cypress - and how he changes up which scents he uses based on the time of the year.
