I first became aware of the African American Military History Museum in Hattiesburg, Mississippi just today, in randomly turning my television to American History TV, the weekend-only programming of the cable channel, C-SPAN3. This video of a brief tour of the museum and its exhibits was informative and fascinating. The museum highlights more than 150 years of African American military history.

Latoya Norman gave a tour of the African American Military History Museum and highlighted some of the contributions made by African Americans throughout the nation’s history. African Americans have participated in every American military conflict dating back to the Revolutionary War.

I enjoyed finding out about Ruth Bailey Earl and her powerful (and literal!) stance on being an African American woman serving in the armed forces during World War II.

And I was very surprised to hear about Cathay Williams and her impersonating a man to serve in the U.S. Army — in which she became the first woman to ever do so — and becoming a Buffalo Soldier. I don’t think her story made it into that Bob Marley song…

Library Ebooks Streaming and GLAM Toolshop

The Library Ebooks Streaming List grew out of my wanting to have a Twitter List of the various electronic and online products out there for libraries — which I noticed are advertised not so much by what they can do, but by the various forms of content that they make available to the user, including books, newspaper and magazine articles, music, movies, television, audiobooks, concert performances, and videogames. Also increasingly in that space are user-made media, from both non-professionals and professionals, of podcasts that discuss that content, so I added those, too. The list description captures this kind of hodgepodge: “Library Streaming Services. And ebooks! Podcasts! Databases!” Feel free to compare it to my Media TODAY Twitter List!

And so my GLAM Toolshop List is the flipside, specifically collecting the products — some of them Open Source — that are used to display and distribute this content, by the GLAM — galleries, libraries, archives, and museums. It points up the similarities that these institutions have in making their collections more accessible, especially to those who will never approach their physical entrances. The list is described: “Software, platforms, collaborative tools for libraries, archives, museums, galleries.”

Annual Events and Bookstores and Reading

The Annual Events List is described as being a “List of annual conventions and conferences, especially libraries and tech”. And so of course there’s all sorts of events listed. The list itself has been a list on the move, now being hosted on its third Twitter handle! Never could decide what I should or shouldn’t list, so I decided to just list EVERYTHING. What separates this one and the list below is that there is no TweetedTimes outlet. NOPE. Every event is important to somebody, so you’re just going to have to read about the events from the official Twitter handles themselves–!

The Bookstores and Reading List kind of grew out of the Annual Events List, in my wanting to have a single place to read about book-related events; hence, its description, “Annual Book Festivals, Bookstores, and Book Reading”. There’s a good handful of bookstores that not only host author appearances but these events are filmed and later broadcast on BookTV/C-SPAN2 and thereby permanently archived online on its website. I’ve tried to spotlight these events, filmed or not, as opposed to authors themselves on this list. There’s also book clubs like @Well-Read Black Girl , online book TV shows like @The Tea, book subscription boxes like @Noir Reads, book podcasts like @ProBookNerds, book recommendation websites and bloggers, book review magazines, and independent book publishers and distributors. And more! It’s an incredible list!

Crowdfunding and The Struggle Continues

The Crowdfunding List is one of my more recent Twitter Lists, whose intent, initially, was to list the Twitter accounts of the various online crowdfunding websites and apps, which grew out of the Online Fundraising Tools page I created for the American Library Association Professional Tips Wiki of the ALA Library as well as a list of resources tagged “onlinefundraising” over at Pinboard which was previously on Delicious. Quite quickly, I started adding the Twitter accounts connected to individual short-term and long-term fundraising projects–like @LittleMissFlint, ten-years-old as of this writing (but turning 11 in 2018!), tirelessly determined to regularly raise the monies needed to purchase bottled water for the entire population of Flint, Michigan, as the water coming through its pipes is poisonous, has had dangerous lead levels since April 24, 2014, and has already wrought permanent damage upon the health of its residents, including its children (though it took a fight by a Flint pediatrician for this to be acknowledged). Also included are many of the groups that are in The Struggle Continues Twitter List, described below, as these groups run on donations–especially the community bond funds set up in cities across the USA that provide relief for those in jail strictly due to being unable to afford bail. The most popular tweets end up displayed on my Crowdfunding @twttimes newspaper at http://tweetedtimes.com/v/16987.

The Struggle Continues List is another one of my Twitter Lists, whose initial name was Don’t Boo, Vote!, which was something President Barack Obama had said in a speech in order to encourage American citizens to register to vote and vote in elections, and was a list of the Twitter accounts of organizations that were likewise promoting voting and providing information on the candidates and polling places for the 2016 Presidential Election. After the election, the list grew and evolved into a list of the Twitter accounts of the organizations that are vital and important to helping American citizens fight what was unleashed as a result of the 2016 Presidential Election; namely, a Racist Bigoted Misogynist Clown, a White Nationalist President, whose lack of knowledge of basic American government and history, an unfamiliarity with treating his fellow American citizens who aren’t rich and white and male with respect, a willing unwillingness to declare or in any way recognize himself as being the duly elected (although this fact is in high doubt) leader of the Americans who did not vote for him (probably because the majority of Americans did not vote for him), and the lack of a heart, courage, or a soul, is unmistakably a feature, not a bug. I then changed the name of the list to The Struggle Continues, which, again, is not a phrase of mine, but is the phrase always used as part of the signature of Professor William M. Harris Sr. on his daughter Melissa’s birthday cards. The most popular tweets end up displayed on my The Struggle Continues @twttimes newspaper at http://tweetedtimes.com/v/13446.

Studs Terkel Radio Archive to launch FROM Windy City Times

The Studs Terkel Radio Archive ( STRA )—consisting of more than 5,600 programs in various genres created at Terkel’s hometown fine arts radio station WFMT in Chicago between 1952 and 1997—will become available to the general public on what would have been Terkel’s 106th birthday: Wed., May 16.

The STRA will be a unique resource for educators, journalists, artists, activists, media-makers, scholars and people from all walks of life seeking to connect the voices and ideas of 20th century luminaries with contemporary social issues. The project is managed by the Chicago History Museum and WFMT Radio Network, with major support from the Library of Congress and National Endowment for the Humanities plus supplemental support from numerous other organizations and individuals.

It will consist of five components: a digital platform, Digital Bughouse, Terkel in the Classroom, the Bughouse Square podcast and STRA live events.
