R22 and R410A.

If your air conditioner was manufactured after 2010, it uses the new style of refrigerant R410A.

Air conditioners made prior to this most likely are filled with R22.

Why Are There Different Refrigerants?

Believe it or not, R22 has actually been in the process of being phased out since the mid 1990s and was completely phased out as of January 1, 2020.

R22 refrigerant is not nearly as eco-friendly as the R410A refrigerant.

R410A offers several benefits compared to R22:

Better Performance – The R22 refrigerant has to work harder to let go of the heat it absorbs inside your home. This extra work means your compressor has to work harder in return leading to a decreased lifespan.

Better Efficiency – As previously stated, R410A is more capable of absorbing the heat from your home and dispersing it outside. This increases the overall efficiency of your air conditioner and allows your home to cool more quickly.

Cheaper – R410A is much cheaper to obtain than R22. As R22 becomes more and more scarce, the price of it will continue to rise. Eventually all supplies of R22 will be depleted and you will have no choice but to replace your air conditioner if you have a refrigerant leak.

Better For Environment – The entire reason for the R22 phase out is its damaging effects on the earth’s ozone layer. R410A is a much more eco-friendly refrigerant.

Can You Mix R22 and R410A?

This is absolute NO.

If you attempt to mix the new R410A refrigerant with your R22 air conditioner, you will destroy the compressor of your air conditioner.

R410A requires much more pressure to do it’s job compared to R22.

It should also be said that there is no way to convert an R22 air conditioner to an R410A unit.

In order to make the change, you need to have a completely new R410A air conditioner installed.

The post What Refrigerant Does My AC Use? appeared first on Sears Heating and Cooling.
Uncategorized admin Furnace Troubleshooting Tips https://www.searsheatingcooling.com/furnace-troubleshooting-tips/ Sears Heating and Cooling – Columbus, Ohio urn:uuid:b9e3bf3f-e513-f9c7-1376-d758b1211c73 Mon, 13 Jun 2022 11:47:37 -0400
During the cold weather of winter there is nothing worse than going home to a cold house. How cold should the air be anyways?

When the weather gets really hot outside, you count on your air conditioner to provide a constant stream of cool air to keep you and your family comfortable.

But, how cold should the air from your air conditioner actually be?

Temperature Drop

The difference between the temperature of the air flowing into your vents via the return vents and the temperature of the cool air coming out is known in the HVAC world as “temperature drop”.

In most cases, a temperature drop of 15-20 degrees is all that most air conditioners are capable of handling today. Run your ac any cooling and you risk needing an ac repair.

Therefore, if the temperature outside is 85 degrees, most air conditioners should be able to cool your home to 65-70 degrees inside under normal conditions.

Granted, cooling it to these temps means it will be working hard and running for most of the day.

If you are looking to cut back on your energy bills, try leaving the temp a bit higher instead.

Adjusting your temperature just 1 degree can save you up to 10% on utility costs over the course of a year.

The post How Cold Should My AC Be? appeared first on Sears Heating and Cooling.
Uncategorized admin Should I Have My Air Ducts Cleaned? https://www.searsheatingcooling.com/air-ducts-cleaned/ Sears Heating and Cooling – Columbus, Ohio urn:uuid:9cf8af72-6cfc-2d9f-2c13-ca495d4f2646 Thu, 09 Jun 2022 16:37:35 -0400
How Often Should I Clean My Air Ducts? Can you see or feel a good amount of dirt or dust build up?

If so, don’t be alarmed. Air ducts are bound to get dirty over time and will require cleaning. It’s important to note that everyone’s home is different.

If you have many pets, your air ducts will become dirty faster due to hair and dander build up.

Time For A Cleaning!

Signs it may be time for an air duct cleaning include:

Visual signs of mold or dirt build up in return vents or other components of your HVAC system.

You notice foul smells coming from your vents (a small animal could have made it’s way in)

You’ve haven’t had your ducts cleaned at least once in the past 3-5 years.

These are some general rules of thumb when it comes to getting your duct work cleaned. Every home is different and may be able to go longer periods of time in between cleanings.

If you are wondering if you should have your air ducts cleaned, this is a good place to start.

Importance Of Filters

One of the biggest ways you can cut down on the need for duct cleaning is having a quality furnace filter installed and changing it regularly.

Most standard furnace filters are one inch thick and should be changed at least once every 30 days.

You can also have a high-quality media filter installed.

These filters capture a lot more of the airborne particulates and can also be changed less frequently due to their size (approximately 5-6 inches thick).

An electronic air cleaner is another option that you can have installed that electronically traps dirt and other airborne particulates.

These units typically have a high-quality HEPA filter in them that can filter down to a few microns (thickness of a human hair!).

The post Should I Have My Air Ducts Cleaned? appeared first on Sears Heating and Cooling.
Uncategorized admin As energy prices rise we are here to help make sure your equipment is running as efficiently as possible! https://www.royaleref.com/blog/energy-prices-rise-we-are-here-help-make-sure-your-equipment-running-efficiently-possible Royale Refrigeration blogs urn:uuid:c5aa006e-a1b6-f7b5-f1a2-6dc54af10adf Tue, 22 Mar 2022 08:01:58 -0400

The best way to make the most of the equipment you’ve got and keep it running efficiently, and for as long as possible, is to look after it.

With our Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) you can book a regular maintenance of your equipment to increase a system’s life cycle, make sure it’s running its best, using energy efficiently and pick up any potential problems before they cause any real issues.

Fridge/Freezer

With all our solutions we use energy efficient units, providing excellent functionality. By having a gas furnace as your back up heat source, you will have no issues keeping your home warm during freezing temperatures. Gas furnaces are also able to heat much hotter than electric furnaces and generally make the home feel warmer.

If you don’t have access to a natural gas or propane source, an electric furnace is another option for auxiliary heat. The largest downside to electric furnaces is that they can be notoriously expensive to run in freezing temperatures and they also do not heat as well as their gas counterparts.

Some people that refuse to switch to auxiliary heat will set their thermostats to run their heat pump until it just can’t heat anymore.

This can sometimes place undo stress on the system and result in needing a heat pump repair to get it working again.

Ice Formation on Heat Pump

It’s worth noting that during the winter months, you may notice some ice or frost formation on your heat pump.

This is totally normal. Your heat pump actually has a “Defrost” mode that it will go through to remove the frost from the refrigerant coils.

However, if you notice a continual build up of ice or frost on your unit and it never goes away, it’s definitely time to call a professional for service.

Continuing to run your heat pump with large amounts of ice or frost on it (see picture below) can cause eventual damage to your system.

The post Will My Heat Pump Work In Cold Weather? appeared first on Sears Heating and Cooling.
Uncategorized admin Is My Furnace Leaking Gas? https://www.searsheatingcooling.com/is-my-furnace-leaking-gas/ Sears Heating and Cooling – Columbus, Ohio urn:uuid:9d65eb4a-2f77-8f4c-853a-7a2b1636d0f3 Fri, 14 Jan 2022 16:46:29 -0500
Signs of a Furnace Gas Leak Rotten Egg Smell This is the most obvious sign of a gas leak. Keep in a mind a brand new filter should be white in color.

If you have a clogged air filter, not much air will be able to pass through it and it can cause your furnace to overheat, tripping the limit switch which is a safety feature built into your furnace to prevent a fire from occurring.

An overheating furnace can also create potential cracks in the heat exchanger which can lead to carbon monoxide leaking into your home.

Be sure you have the correct size filter in your furnace as well. A filter that is the wrong size can damage the furnace and sometimes even get sucked into the blower motor causing major damage.

Checking your filter is a simple fix that could prevent a future furnace repair.

Furnace Is Oversized

Bigger is not always better when it comes to HVAC equipment. A properly sized furnace and AC is critical for your home.

This type of issue is unfortunately only fixed by having your current furnace removed and the correctly sized furnace installed.

If you have an oversized furnace for your home, it will end up using much more energy than needed.

This ultimately means that the warmer air will not be properly distributed throughout your home.

Your home will heat for a very short period of time, and then the furnace will kick right back on again, continuing to short cycle.

This is not good for your furnace’s overall health.

Not only will it increase your monthly energy bills, but it will also cause unneeded wear and tear on your furnace’s expensive parts.

A furnace that is oversized will wear down its heat exchanger much faster than one that is properly sized.

If you believe your furnace is too big, you will need to have a professional HVAC company out to take a look and verify its heating capacity.

Faulty Thermostat

Some thermostats can be finicky.

Your furnace only does what your thermostat tells it to do.

If your furnace is short cycling on a continual basis, the fix may be as simple as replacing your current thermostat with a new one.

You can either buy one yourself at the store, or have a professional install one for you.

Also be sure to check the location of your thermostat in your home. Is it in direct sunlight during the day?

If so, this can cause to think it’s warmer in the home than it actually is.

The ideal location for your thermostat should be on an interior wall in a highly occupied area.

It should not be located near any windows where sunlight or drafts can affect it’s temperature reading of the home.

Blocked Exhaust Vent

If you have a high efficiency heating and cooling system, it will vent out the side of your home via white pvc piping.

During the fall and winter months, it is sometimes possible for this exhaust vent to become clogged with leaves and snow, preventing the furnace from venting properly and causing it to short cycle.

This problem is not only bad for your HVAC system but can be dangerous to your health as carbon monoxide can begin to leak into your home instead of venting outside correctly.

Blocked Air Vents

Sometimes air vents are put in inconvenient locations in homes and people just cover them up with couches and other furniture.

If you have some air vents in your home covered up, this could be the cause of your furnace short cycling.

Blocked air vents will prevent warm air from heating your home properly and will also shorten its overall lifespan.

Be sure to keep the area around them clear of furniture and also make sure the dampers are open to allow air flow.

Bad Flame Sensor

If your furnace starts and then shuts off almost immediately, a bad flame sensor may be the culprit.

A flame sensor’s job is to tell the furnace that a flame is actually present when the gas is being released.

This part is actually a safety component of your furnace in that the furnace will not run if a flame is not present.

Without a flame sensor, your furnace would just leak gas into your home even though no flame is actually present.

This would be a very dangerous situation!

How Long Should My Furnace Run?

The cycle time for your furnace can vary by home and also the temperature you set your thermostat to.

If your home is not very energy efficient and you have the temperature set high, you will notice that your furnace runs longer than more energy efficient homes.

The heating cycle in an average home usually lasts about 10-15 minutes from the time you thermostat sends a signal to the furnace to when it finally turns off.

Why does my furnace turn off after a few minutes? <fa-icon icon="chevron-down"></fa-icon>

Your furnace may turn off after a few minutes because:

Your flame sensor is malfunctioning.

Your pressure switch is broken.

Your furnace’s draft inducer motor is broken.

Your furnace has many components that will work in sync with one another to maintain the safety and operation of your unit. class="wpb_wrapper">
Furnace filters can become dirty quite quickly depending on your home and living conditions.

Your furnace filter is one of the most important parts of your HVAC system.

Allowing your filter to become too dirty can result in your furnace short cycling or your AC to freeze up.

Not only does the furnace filter help cut down on dust in the air, but it also helps protect all of the important parts of your furnace and air conditioner.

Depending on your home and living conditions, you may ending up changing your furnace filter more or less frequently than others.

If your furnace filter is getting dirty faster than usual, here are some things to check:

Dust In Your Home

Cleaning and dusting your home on a regular basis is a good way to extend the life of your furnace filters.

It’s advised to dust and vacuum your home at least once per week to cut down on the overall dust level of your home.

Having your carpets professionally cleaned at least once per year is recommended as well as they are able to clean much deeper than a regular vacuum.

Did you know that your carpets are the biggest filters in your home?

Fan Is Set To “On” Instead Of ” Auto”

This setting is found on your thermostat.

If you have the fan in your furnace set to “on”, this means that the fan will run continuously until you turn it off at the thermostat.

Some people prefer this setting as it helps filter the air in the home and also helps with air re-circulation as well.

By setting your fan to “auto” your fan will only run when your air conditioner or furnace is cooling or heating your home.

High MERV Rating Filters

You may know these types of filters as HEPA filters as well.

These high performance filters are able to trap an exorbitant amount of material down to a few microns in size (thickness of a human hair).

If you have a high quality HEPA filter you may notice they get dirty a bit faster than normal filters as they are filtering a lot more of the particles in the air.

This is really more of a give and take scenario as these types of filters are doing you a great service by cleaning the air in your home thoroughly.

Most high-quality media filters should last you between 6-12 months in a normal home.

Pet Hair Problems

If you have a few furry friends in your home, this could definitely be a cause for fast dying furnace filters.

As your pet’s hair sheds, it is sucked into the return air vents and recirculated back to the furnace where it will clog up your furnace filter over time.

Vacuuming on a regular basis will certainly help with this issue.

Having your air ducts cleaned is another great way to remove hair from your HVAC system.

Leaky Duct Work

If you have holes in your air ducts that are in unconditioned spaces (i.e. attics, crawlspaces ect) this could definitely cause filter issues.

Air and dust from inside these unconditioned spaces can be sucked into the duct work quite easily.

According to ENERGY STAR, a typical house loses 20-30% of air through leaks in the duct work and poor duct connections.

Leaving these untreated can not only kill your furnace filter quickly, but also result in higher energy bills.

The post <a rel="nofollow" We originally installed refrigeration and air conditioning in the prestigious Hampstead Norreys community village shop and were delighted to be asked to install air conditioning throughout the newly built office space.

What type of system was installed?

The requirement included Daikin air conditioning throughout the site using a combination of wall mounts, compact cassettes and round flow cassettes giving us the perfect room temperature even in the rooms located in the barn’s eaves.

What requirements did the client have?

It was vitally important the newly installed equipment was reliable, visually sleek and was hidden in keeping with the barns design to look like the older barns on the estate.

What did Royale do?

After a successful air conditioning installation at the community village shop, we understood what our client wanted and the type of bespoke installation they were after. An energy efficient air conditioning system was installed throughout the site keeping the units as subtle as possible. The outdoor condensing units were positioned in such a way that they could be boxed in out of view to keep inline with the other farm house buildings surrounding the newly build (made to look old office block). William did no want to see anything on the permitter of the building, all pipework was either under the floor or in the walls.

What were the results?

A reliable and energy efficient system was installed that provides consistent temperature control and an aesthetic that fitted in with the barns feel and surrounding area.

Image:

Air Conditioning System, Sarah Millard Transforming a basement with AC and fresh air ventilation! https://www.royaleref.com/blog/transforming-basement-ac-and-fresh-air-ventilation Royale Refrigeration blogs urn:uuid:31b98e8e-c5f9-b243-bcd9-beeebd42a2ec Tue, 08 Jun 2021 05:07:17 -0400

Earlier last year, we were delighted to hear from an existing client and a new project he had in the pipeline. I mean they both sit outside and look the same right?

Well, kind of, but they are also both quite different in how they operate and their overall energy costs.

Depending on where you live, one may be more economical than the other.

Let’s take a look at both units and see which one might be better for you in the long run.

Heat Pump:

A heat pump system can both cool and heat your home.

Heat pumps work by having the ability to literally reverse it’s operation through the use of a reversing valve.

During the hot summer months, the heat from the indoor air is collected at the evaporator coil inside and then transferred to the outside condenser through the use of refrigerant.

If you feel the copper refrigerant lines going into your indoor coil, you can feel the heat being removed from your home.

Once at the outside unit, the heat is dispersed into the air.

This process happens in the opposite order during the colder months in heating mode.

Heat from the air is collected at the outdoor unit and then transferred inside to warm your home. The only downside to this is that sometimes it is too cold outside for your heat pump to adequately heat your home.

Normally, once temperatures drop below 32 degrees you will need to use your auxiliary heating source, such as an gas furnace, to heat your home.

Heat pumps generally having a much higher energy efficiency than a standard air conditioner.

It’s worth noting however that unless you live in an area that has a mild winter, you may not see the maximum energy savings of having a heat pump since it won’t run efficiently below 32 degrees.

States such as Florida, Georgia and the Carolina’s are all prime heat pump locations.

Here is a quick break down of what a heat pump can do for you:

Both heats and cools the home

Heating capabilities decline when the outside temperature is less than 32 degrees.

Operates all year round

Last 15-20 years assuming annual maintenance is completed on unit.

More expensive than air conditioners and generally cost between $6,500-$15,000.

More energy efficient than a standard air conditioner

Air Conditioners:

Air conditioners are the standard cooling equipment in most homes in the northern part of America today.

They work in similar fashion to a heat pump but in only one direction (transfer of heat from indoors to outdoors).

An air conditioner operates by absorbing warm indoor air at the evaporator coil that sits on top of your furnace.

This heat energy is then transferred to the outdoor condenser through the refrigerant lines and then dispersed into the outdoor air.

You can feel the heat being removed from your home if you hold your hand over the fan blowing at the outside unit.

Here is a quick break down of what an air conditioner can do for you:

Cools home only

Only runs seasonally.

Last 15-20 years assuming annual maintenance is completed on unit.

Generally cost between $3,500-$8,000.

If you are looking to get the best deal, the best time to buy an air conditioner or heat pump is during the off season months of February and March.

The post Air Conditioner Vs Heat Pump appeared first on Sears Heating and Cooling.
Uncategorized admin How Much Is a New AC in 2023? https://www.searsheatingcooling.com/new-ac-costs/ Sears Heating and Cooling – Columbus, Ohio urn:uuid:65281c39-c7a7-ad18-5eca-0674bdc14cc8 Tue, 16 Mar 2021 17:38:02 -0400
New Air Conditioner Cost near Columbus, Ohio How much can you expect to pay to have a new air conditioner installed in your Columbus area home? Here are a few reasons why:

Seasoned experts who have installed hundreds (if not thousands) of prior units will install your equipment.

You will receive a high quality warranty from both the manufacturer and the installing company.

If something goes wrong, all you have to do is call and chances are it will be fixed for free within the first year.

Some manufacturers will decline any warranty if the unit is not installed by a licensed HVAC company.

Last, depending on what is wrong with your current air conditioner, it may make more sense to repair instead of replace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I repair or replace my home air conditioning system near Columbus? <fa-icon icon="chevron-down"></fa-icon>

You may want to consider having your home air conditioning system replaced instead of repaired in Columbus, OH if:

Your air conditioning system is over 10 years old.

Your home’s AC system breaks down frequently.

Your air conditioner no longer cools effectively.

If your home’s air conditioning unit is older than 15 years and requires a repair that costs more than half of the cost to replace it, it is more cost effective to have your air conditioner replaced.

How often should a home air conditioning system be replaced? <fa-icon icon="chevron-down"></fa-icon>

A home air conditioning system should be replaced every 10-15 years. Nikki Tadema, Chief Operational Officer, at City Harvest told us, “City Harvest has grown two-fold over the past few years and with COVID-19 hitting us almost a year ago we have seen a huge increase in demand for our services to those in need in our London communities.

“We had plans to increase our warehouse space pre COVID-19 and realised that our need to increase our service meant we needed a larger space. We managed to secure a fabulous new depot on our existing site that saw us move from just under 4000 square foot to just under 14000 square foot. Hence we needed a Ferrari of fridges so the search began.

“As we were led by a grant to build our new home we had to go out to tender and have at least three companies bid for the work. It was one of the easiest decisions ever. Gary, from Royale, arrived to do a site visit and compared to the others he was just excellent and instantly knew what I was after. Price was a contributing factor, but the main decision came from him offering to project manage the whole fit out for me. A huge help as being a not-for-profit we don’t have the luxury of bringing in a project manager and this helped me so much, I was still able to run our full operation.”

Gary, Commercial Director, at Royale added, “It was lovely to meet Nikki and help design a solution to manage the amount of food City Harvest need to sort, prep and distribute on a daily basis. We added a temperature regulated prep room, adjoining a freezer cold room and cold room designed with floor guides to sort and store the food. We also installed Daikin air conditioning in the new offices and installed a storeroom and kitchen, made with food safe cold room panels, within the main warehouse.

"The whole project has been a joy to work on and it was made even more special knowing we were able to play a part in creating this amazing space to in turn help and support many vulnerable people. City Harvest really is an amazing charity.”

Nikki, concluded, “The on-site engineers were just fantastic, nothing was too much and they were an absolute pleasure to have on site, I’m over the moon to see the initial ideas come to life. I would definitely work with Royale again and have already recommended them to DEFRA, should any other charities need their services.”

Image:

Categories:

Air Conditioning

Refrigeration

Sarah Millard New Construction Plumbers in Southbury CT 06488 http://suzannezehrius.blogspot.com/2020/02/new-construction-plumbers-in-southbury.html My Reading List: Read and Unread urn:uuid:7f7ebc85-841b-85db-a7fc-727f9a8a8bc8 Wed, 26 Feb 2020 17:16:28 -0500 Unread Burst and Frozen Pipe Repair Southbury CT 06488 http://suzannezehrius.blogspot.com/2020/02/burst-and-frozen-pipe-repair-southbury.html My Reading List: Read and Unread urn:uuid:0521ef7a-fa8e-4edb-2b0e-e440c873bad5 Wed, 26 Feb 2020 16:16:09 -0500 Unread Toilet Repair Southbury CT 06488 - (203) 496-4982 http://suzannezehrius.blogspot.com/2020/02/toilet-repair-southbury-ct-06488-203.html My Reading List: Read and Unread urn:uuid:8625ea88-8103-fdbb-7599-0a7e8ab70475 Wed, 26 Feb 2020 14:16:13 -0500 Unread Gas and Oil-Fired Boiler Repair in Southbury CT 06488 http://suzannezehrius.blogspot.com/2020/02/gas-and-oil-fired-boiler-repair-in.html My Reading List: Read and Unread urn:uuid:24edabde-3318-37a0-51b9-5d7f5655b538 Wed, 26 Feb 2020 14:16:10 -0500 Unread Boiler Installation in Southbury CT 06488 http://suzannezehrius.blogspot.com/2020/02/boiler-installation-in-southbury-ct.html My Reading List: Read and Unread urn:uuid:657cb16b-6f2d-72b4-c10f-9f034257e54a Wed, 26 Feb 2020 13:16:19 -0500 Unread Boiler Cleaning & Maintenance Southbury CT 06488 http://suzannezehrius.blogspot.com/2020/02/boiler-cleaning-maintenance-southbury.html My Reading List: Read and Unread urn:uuid:13099e24-3b12-55b9-5f61-8cb3ff33e4a4 Wed, 26 Feb 2020 12:16:23 -0500 Unread Bathroom Remodeling Plumbers in Southbury CT 06488 http://suzannezehrius.blogspot.com/2020/02/bathroom-remodeling-plumbers-in.html My Reading List: Read and Unread urn:uuid:08a294d2-12e9-7eee-8380-32cb486eb80e Wed, 26 Feb 2020 00:16:24 -0500 Unread Are You Looking for a 24 Hour Plumber in Southbury CT? http://suzannezehrius.blogspot.com/2020/02/are-you-looking-for-24-hour-plumber-in.html My Reading List: Read and Unread urn:uuid:7d1b70a2-d33c-5e07-85ee-1408bc7297ce Tue, 25 Feb 2020 21:16:12 -0500 Unread Working with Royale: How we serve and support catering and food retail businesses https://www.royaleref.com/blog/working-royale-how-we-serve-and-support-catering-and-food-retail-businesses Royale Refrigeration blogs urn:uuid:dac71283-5b66-5633-84e1-d580bc8aaf8f Tue, 28 Jan 2020 10:18:53 -0500

We’ve been fortunate to work with quite the range of companies since Royale’s creation over 30 years ago! Today we wanted to take a little time to talk about the work and value we offer to companies that need reliable refrigeration support. As you might expect in the UK, this is a serious requirement that underpins the success of many of the brands and franchises we know and love as consumers.

The interesting thing about this kind of work is that it’s far from uniform. While refrigeration support might sound like a standard thing, every company has its own focus and requirements – what works for one won’t for the other. We’ve talked about this in detail before in other blogs from the team, such as when we performed renovation projects for a new-build for Cobbs Farm or our creation of the Isle of Wight’s first-ever dry-ageing refrigeration room.

With that said, though, there are a few general things we get right and offer uniquely to these kinds of businesses, be they small to medium businesses or larger franchises! Let’s go through a few of them.

Peace of mind support

If your fridge breaks down, it’s a pain you’ll have to fix soon. If you’re a franchise manager and your building’s refrigeration system fails, it’s an immediate priority that could cost you thousands in lost produce every day – and even more in missed business.

Reliability is worth its weight in gold. Simply put, track records matter – and ours is one we’re proud of indeed. We’ve been rock steady for over 30 years, keeping Royale in the family and employing staff who very rarely move on to greener pastures. That’s given us a unique grounding in reliable skill, making our refrigeration support arm a prized asset that keeps businesses going across the country.

Any time, the first time

It’s well and good to offer reactive callouts if a client’s refrigeration system should break; it’s another thing entirely to offer that service 24 hours a day, seven days a week – and to boast an approximately 90% first-time fix rate while we’re at it. That first-time fix rate means a lot; as we mentioned before, thousands of Pounds in losses are measured in minutes and hours where refrigeration systems are concerned.

Part of the reason we boast such a high first-time fix rate is, we think, down to how we stock our callout vehicles. To put it simply, we don’t skip on parts. We trust the experience of our engineers, letting them dictate what to stock their vehicles with based on their expected work.

Experienced staff

We trust our people. All our engineers are qualified in leading manufacturer equipment and come from a variety of system experience. We’re grateful to have a depth and breadth of knowledge in our teams, allowing us to place team members in roles that best draw on and develop their existing skills.

We’re far from old-school, either; our engineers work with modern tablets and smartphones, making it possible for them to send job details, updates and requests through to our central office in minutes. This means that we can quickly respond to issues and requests for our clients.

Our commitment to the environment

We’ve long been an environmentally conscious company here at Royale. We’re aware of the potential our work has to impact the environment and we’re proud to be always at the forefront of sustainable technology within our industry, be that through promoting and encouraging the use of greener refrigerants or staying abreast of new developments towards a greener industry.

You can read more about our efforts to minimise the environmental impact of our work in this article.

Want to know more?

A little more about us then. We’ve served clients across the country well via our refrigeration support and reactive callout services, and we’re proud to say as much. It’s all down to the skill and commitment of our staff, after all!

If you’d like a chat with one of us directly about your own requirements and how we might be able to help, do feel free to reach out. The Bunker, part of Cyberfort Group, provides corporate data storage from its military-grade secure data centres in Berkshire and Kent. But what does ultra-secure data storage have to do with cooling solutions, you say?

That’s where we come in.

Cyberfort Group: Solving a modern data challenge

It’s no secret we’re in a digital age now. Modern businesses are all online, all the time – a fact that brings significant vulnerability and risk. How much risk, you say? According to one study, cybercrime generated approximately 1.5 trillion Dollars for criminals in 2018. It’s big business that damages legitimate enterprises every day.

Companies like Cyberfort – and The Bunker data centre in Berkshire – provide end-to-end data security in this challenging environment. While we can’t quite name too many names, it’s safe to say they count several global business titans as their customers.

Why was Royale needed?

Simon, our Managing Director, managed this project personally. What many don’t realise is that data isn’t simple to store; besides rigorous cybersecurity protections, large data centres generate tremendous amounts of heat that needs to be controlled with absolute precision.

The value of a data and cloud storage centre like The Bunker is in its reliability. Physical security is impressive, to say the least; Royale’s engineers all needed to be vetted before entering the area to work, and any new engineers or participants in the Royale project were personally escorted in and out of the premise.

The rows of servers and hardware provide a similar digital promise. Simply put, companies pay Cyberfort to guarantee that their business-critical data is available and secure twenty-four hours a day, three hundred and sixty-five days a year. That means redundant systems, exceptional monitoring and management and rock-solid cybersecurity that never sleeps.

Cooling The Bunker

Picture the scene: A large room filled with rack after rack of contemporary storage. Room 121, the key area of Royale’s work, is a high-revenue room for the business – and it needed an upgrade.

Five cooling systems were in place; all were removed. Replacing these with eight modern units, all managed by a Daikin RTD-10 control strategy, was more than a little challenging for one key reason: it had to be done without shutting Room 121 down for a single second.

The RTD-10 solution

Daikin’s RTD-10 is a real piece of kit; specifically designed for IT server rooms, it enables Cyberfort to manage each cooling unit individually inside The Bunker.

Depending on load and active use of the server equipment, fan coils inside the server room can operate on rotation. Not only is this more energy efficient, but it helps to maintain precise temperatures in a room with constantly changing climatic conditions. This approach to temperature control also helps to maximise the lifetime of the system.

The RTD-10 control solution provides advanced fault monitoring when integrated with The Bunker’s building management system. The value of this type of monitoring and control is immeasurable for Cyberfort.

Challenge accepted

This was a delicate task, as you can imagine. By installing eight replacement systems alongside the five existing units, our team carefully switched each older system over to control by our newer, more effective units – one by one, and while maintaining an exact air temperature of 21 degrees.

The project took four weeks to complete. Four weeks of constant diligence, careful work and the slow but steady transfer of old systems to new, all the while maintaining that specific temperature. Stakes were high; simply put, data centres that aren’t cooled will spike in temperature shockingly fast. Servers may literally melt in their racks, destroying hardware and the data within.

Job done

We’re proud to say it went without a hitch – at the cost of more than a few sleepless nights across the Royale team! Our result was the installation of the desired cooling solution with no dip in performance throughout the period of our work.

Going forward, Cyberfort has an enhanced cooling system that is more efficient and boasts more sophisticated security and alarm control. That capability adds value to their offering, helping to guarantee to their clients the kind of constant security and access that matters so much in a business world rife with cybercrime.

Thanks for reading!

The Bunker was one of our more unique bespoke projects, there’s no doubt about that.

If you’d like to chat with us about your own heating and cooling requirements, and whether we might be able to support you with a solution to them, we’re right here and happy to talk. With that in mind, we’re running the risk of inflating the ego of one of our key team members, Gary Millard!

It’s been more than a few years since Gary first started working with our family, and he’s risen to a place of enormous value for the company and its direction. Here’s the scoop on how that happened.

Twenty years ago, far, far away

How time passes! Twenty years ago, our current Managing Director Simon helped Gary by providing him with a position with Royale as an apprentice. Starting from scratch, this led to a thirteen-year stretch with the company which saw Gary build the skills necessary to excel in this field.

As we’ve covered before, our industry can be complex; it takes real time to develop the technical understanding (and qualifications) that are needed to build a truly bespoke and reliable heating and cooling system.

Moving on

At Gary’s thirteen-year point with us, he parted ways. This happened in 2014, seeing Gary strike out on his own as a freelancer specialising in custom coldroom systems. Managing his own projects and living the self-employed life for five years is no small accomplishment in this line of work, and none of us were surprised to see him excel despite the challenges before him.

During the latter part of his freelancing years, Gary also worked for Celltherm, a leading coldroom manufacturer. Can you see the trend occurring here? Coldrooms are challenging jobs to handle; it takes a high degree of practical experience and knowledge to create coldroom solutions that maximise floor space and efficiency for the end client.

Unsurprisingly, Gary was snatched up by that company but ultimately (and thankfully for us) came back to join the Royale family.

Back with Royale

It’s been about a year since Gary returned to us as our new Operations Manager. Recognising the work he’d put in during his freelancing and Celltherm years, we’ve been happy to push him up to the next phase of his career by promoting him to our Commercial Director.

It’s great news all round. Gary adds huge value to Royale in terms of his technical knowledge, project management and customer support abilities, so we’re glad he’s here in this position with us.

Talking skillsets

Self-employment is never easy, and the flip side of that challenge is that Gary’s acquired extensive experience in his specialist coldroom knowledge, service-side skills and client-facing talent.

We saw these new abilities really shine in our recently discussed job for Cheverton Farm. One of our many bespoke projects, this challenge involved a particularly demanding blend of exact specifications and close, regular contact and briefing with the client. Thanks to the work of all our teams involved and Gary’s management skill, things went smoothly and we delivered a great finished solution.

Piecing together such complex requirements is, we’ll say again, not something just any company can do. Clients love Gary, and we’re looking forward to a great 2020 and beyond with him by the helm as our Commercial Director.

With this fresh capability on-board, we’re eager to help businesses grow through our providing of effective, bespoke heating and cooling solutions.

Thanks for reading

We hope you’ve found this little run-down interesting! We’re proud of our team at Royale, and we think it’s only fair to speak up when recognition is deserved. In this instalment, we’re talking about a site-wide chiller installation recently completed for Longacres in Bagshot – the largest independent garden centre in the south of England.

Out with the old, in with the new

Temperate control systems are reliable by nature, but invariably the time comes to repair and replace. Longacres Garden Centre is such an example, having made use of their previous chiller for over a decade before deciding that a more modern, eco-friendly system was a worthy investment.

In Longacres’ case, the Royale team recommended a top-of-the-line BlueBox chiller as a replacement. The BlueBox product line is known for its temperature consistency, reliability and energy-efficiency.

Importantly, the chiller we chose for the task can heat and cool large areas at the same time – a must-have for the temperature sensitive plant products stocked in this huge indoor site.

Bacteria blockers

Carefully removing an older system can be a challenge, so our engineers conducted a thorough assessment of the existing environment. The assessment led our engineers to flush the piping that would be connected to the new chiller to ensure that it was completely free of bacteria.

Royale’s project management team contacted the local authority for authorisation to discharge the old water before flushing the pipework to remove bacteria that had built up over ten years, since the previous chiller was installed.

The new BlueBox system provided by Royale offers an excellent upgrade for Longacres that will perform more efficiently and cost less than the previous chiller for years to come – the ideal result, simply put!

Talking scale

Longacres Garden Centre is over 3,000 square metres, stocked with valuable plants, shrubbery and flowers that are extremely temperature sensitive, meaning a large part of this sizeable building required precision temperate control, twenty-four hours a day.

Underfloor heating goes hand in hand with chilling fan coils to maintain stock and stop flowers from wilting. Thousands of Pounds of stock rely on the system to stay fresh, with the same amount arriving every week directly from Holland.

Working around footprints and floor layouts is rarely straightforward, and it’s the experience of our engineers that produces a proposed system that’s energy-efficient, easily maintained, reliable and affordable for our clients.

All done!

The Royale team responsible for working with Longacres Garden Centre installed a new system that was easier to maintain and more energy efficient than the old system.

If you’d like to have a chat with us about anything cooling, heating or HVAC related you can reach us at info@royaleref.com or by phone on 01635 551446. In a real shocker of a plot twist, today we’re talking about just why refrigeration matters so much to the much-loved public house. There’s a lot going on, from ice rooms to bar fridges and freezer machines, so keep reading!

Beverage issues

First and foremost, warm beer is almost a criminal offence (in most parts of England, at least!) and nobody likes being told that drinks are off the menu. It’s a supply chain puzzle; kegs can take up to two days to chill to required temperatures, and pubs often operate off a consignment system – the goods keep coming regardless of sales!

Pub refrigeration systems face a lot of use around the clock; an issue made more relevant by the constant entering and exiting of cooling areas. The heat exchange that occurs when ‘outside’ air briefly mixes with a chilled interior can stress a system, meaning pub cooling solutions must be tough and reliable to face the demand. Even smaller units are affected by this.

And you’d better believe that customers want their drinks; beer alone is rising in popularity at a significant rate in the UK. Craft beers have exploded in popularity, with a 20% increase in the registering of trademarks for such alcohol seen in recent years. Waitrose has boosted its range of specialist beers by 27% in response to a similar decision made by Tesco. People love beer, and they love it cold.

Food matters

Food is far from trivial, either, where refrigeration is concerned. A 2019 quarterly report, Pub Brand Monitor by MCA, tells us that over a quarter of dinners out are at pubs. Large chains like JD Wetherspoon are well-oiled operations, bringing in and cooking literally tonnes of food every week.

Chilling foods is mandatory to stop harmful bacteria and food spoilage. Different units, too, must be carefully installed and calibrated; fridges at 1°C and display cabinets at 5°C, for instance. Maintenance contracts come into their own here; systems and units should be regularly checked – pubs that skip on this run the risk of losing their stock should a system underperform or break on them. Not nice when your prized pub is stocking thousands of Pounds of produce and drink at any given time!

Cellar solutions

While food storage is important, it’s fair to say cellar cooling is vital. Pubs – or any establishment selling alcohol – rely on sophisticated systems to maintain temperatures at exact levels across large spaces.

Cellar cooling units are the answer. They work by pushing chilled air into the cellar in question, producing an optimum temperature for the storage of beer, wine, soft drinks and more. Importantly, they give pubs the option to use large cellars to refrigerate drinks where a standard refrigeration system wouldn’t be feasible – or would be too limited in size to get the job done properly.

They’re quite the systems. Many operate for over eighteen hours a day, with modern units able to incorporate small heating elements into the mix to ensure that, if required, the exact temperature can be reached by raising as well as cooling the cellar.

Fortunately for pub owners and restaurants, they’re quite affordable to maintain. They’re ubiquitous across the UK, being a relatively affordable initial purchase that solves the cold storage problem many pubs face – particularly ones which are older or listed buildings, of which there are many across the UK.

In conclusion!

A glimpse, then, of just how important refrigeration is to our beloved pubs! It’s easy to enjoy the front of the house, so to speak, without wondering about the hard work and investment that goes into keeping your favourite watering hole running.

We’re proud to support many pubs across the UK; they’re part of our cultural identity, after all!
