What Parents Need to Know Before Taking Their Kids to See ‘DC League of Super Pets’

Wondering if DC League of Super Pets is scary for kids or worth seeing theaters? This spoiler-free review will help you decide if it’ll be fun for the whole family.

DC movies are something I’ve been having a hard time getting into, but thanks to Ty, my 9-year-old superhero obsessed son, I’m giving them a try. Wonder Woman and Superman Man of Steel were fine, but I was not a fan of Justice League. I haven’t even wasted my time with Aquaman which I heard was terrible, but I did recently watch Shazam with him and was pleasantly surprised. DC League of Super Pets combines his love of superheroes AND animals, so I was really excited to bring the whole family and hear his take.

What I liked about DC League of Super Pets

The movie sets some good pacing in the beginning and sets the groundwork for a good villain story. The Justice League cameos are fun and there’s enough subtle adult humor woven in for the parents. It’s not funny at the level of some of our favorite family animated movies, but it’s not so childish that parents won’t also enjoy it.

It balances a line between a storyline that is not so complicated that young ones can’t follow, but a little bit of cartoon violence and humor that might be a lot for some young kids. On the plus side, there are some good but subtle messages about self-acceptance and the power of teamwork.

Definitely make sure you stick around for not one, but TWO end credit scenes. The second one even seems to hint at an upcoming DC movie.

Diversity and Inclusion

I appreciate the mix of male and female characters who both take prominent roles throughout the film. A pet mentions his owner getting a fiancé and the camera pans to two women engaging in conversation, a nod to LGBTQ representation. And the voice cast is quite racially diverse.

What I didn’t like about DC League of Super Pets

As much as I love Krypto, and Dwayne Johnson, that voice pairing was a little distracting for me. I kept thinking it was a little much for his character. Or perhaps Krypto shoulda been a beefier dog. I am in the minority though because I asked my kids if they noticed who the voice actor was and my 12-year-old was the only one who immediately called it when the movie started. Kevin Hart as Ace on the other hand worked for me, as did the rest of the voice cast.

Plot wise the movie is fun and action packed but the last 20 minutes or so felt a little overkill. The pattern of fighting and followed by emotional breakdowns gets tiring (though I never tire of Batman’s (Keanu Reeves’) emotional breakdowns–ever). I appreciate a good villain and this one definitely gets over the top. So much so that parents’ eyes may roll, however my kids loved it. Which brings me to a question some parents with young kids you might have. Is DC League of Super Pets scary for kids?

Is ‘DC League of Super Pets’ Scary for Kids?

I started answering this question years ago when movies like Zootopia gave us jump scares we weren’t expecting. My kids are getting older, and my youngest, though 4, seems to be the most fearless of my children. That said, I still watch her to gauge how intense some parts might be for little ones.

DC League of Super Pets has a villian with magical powers that could come across as scary for some young viewers. Lee Lee asked to sit in my lap toward the end when it was getting intense, but it was partly due to the movie getting a little long for her. Part of the plot involves lab testing on guinea pigs.

Also worth noting for parents, there’s no swearing but a few parts where an animal swears but it is *bleeped* out. Parents and some older children will likely know what words they’d saying.

Ok enough about my thoughts. The best part of our reviews are what my kids had to say.

‘DC League of Super Pets’ Kids Review

This is what our 4, 9 and 12 year olds had to day.

What did you think of the movie?

J: I thought it was a good movie. I thought it was a good animal movie. I liked it more than Secret Life of Pets.

T: I liked it a lot. It’s in my top 25 favorite movies.

What was the funniest part to you?

J: When he was mad at Superman and he was playing the song.

T: When Aquaman was crying.

A: When he was eating the ice cream.

Would you recommend it to your friends?

J: Yea

T: if they like Justice League and if they like dogs and pets.

What lesson did you learn? What message was the movie trying to get across?

J: Teamwork.

T: And you don’t need to be by yourself and handle things alone.

Who was your favorite character?

J: Superman’s Dog

T: Superman

A: The Superdog – Krypto

Who would you recommend this movie to?

J: People who like pet movies

T: People who like Justice League.

Was it more of a pet movie or superhero movie?

J: Pet

T: Pet

Do you think it’s for older kids?

J: Two and up.

T: Well anyone could watch it. Lee Lee watched it.

J: No.

T: No! Why would I think that’s scary? *laughs* why? Why would I think that’s scary?

Would you want to watch it again?

J: No.

T: Yes. I would want to watch it again.

A: Not me. [After seeing it twice, once at the screener and again with the whole family]

How would you rank it compared to other movies we’ve seen recently?

J: I liked this more than Lightyear. I liked this more than Jurassic World Dominion. I liked Sonic 2 more.

T: I maybe liked Thor Love and Thunder a little more than the pets. I liked this more than Lightyear that’s for sure. I liked it way more than Lightyear. And I liked it more than Shazam. It’s kinda like a Justice League movie but with cartoon and with pets. I liked Justice League more. I like this more than Batman Begins and more than The Dark Knight Rises. And I liked this more than Man of Steel. I did not like Jurassic World Dominion more. I liked Sonic 2 more. That is still my favorite movie.

What was your favorite part?

J: When they were telling their origin stories

T: when they were fighting the first bad guy.

A: When the dog saved her.

How many stars would you give it?

J: 3

T: 3.5 or 4

A: All the stars!

Is it worth going to the movies to see/picking it for movie night/paying $30?

J: No. You don’t need to waste your money. Unless you really want to see it then go see it.

T: Yes! Because they’d want to see it first and see if they like it then they can watch it again and again.

Out of the movies we’ve seen this summer, this was a great one to watch as a whole family. We all liked it more than Lightyear but not as much as Sonic 2. It’s a great end of summer movie to enjoy together. Let us know if you see it and what you think!

What Parents Need to Know Before Taking Their Kids to See Thor Love and Thunder

Marvel Phase 4 has been a little hit and miss, not just in terms of quality, but on family friendliness. I took a risk and brought my 9-year-old Marvel loving son to watch Thor Love and Thunder with me. I had heard from my sister (and apparently this is also in the trailer, but I don’t really watch those anymore), that there was a nude scene. But we went for it and I crossed my fingers it wouldn’t be as scary or gory as Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.

A Spoiler-Free Parent Review of Thor Love and Thunder

Thor Love and Thunder is a fun sequel in the Thor arc of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but it just doesn’t come close to touching Ragnarok. There are some good chilling moments that had us cheering and smiling from ear to ear. Most of the movie is very fun, but not great. The final act has one of my favorite scenes in any Marvel movie and will be a big part of me going back, (Well, that, and a very spicy scene with Thor, which we’ll get to in a moment), but isn’t quite enough to make it a 4 star movie (I give it 3.5 stars).

Jane’s story arc and their story feels a little forced and lacks chemistry and as though we were going backwards. We’ve had several movies since The Dark World, and though it’s nice to see how Thor is adjusting to his place in the universe after losing his world and brother (and nearly everyone else in his life).

Is Thor Love and Thunder Scary for Kids?

Parents might be wondering if Thor Love and Thunder is scary for kids. There are some scenes that might be scary for some kids. Including scenes where kids are captured and other dangers with kids. There are big shadow monster-type creatures but the movie doesn’t put much focus on them. Profanity in the movie is on par with other Marvel films, although this one has a couple of scenes where the use of “sh*tty” seems pretty excessive. The movie also has a brief nude scene where Thor’s clothes are ripped off and you can see, well, everything from behind.

But enough of my thoughts, here’s what Ty, my 9-year-old son had to say.

Thor Love and Thunder Kids Review

What did you think of the movie?

T: I like it a lot.

Why?

T: Because I like that Thor doesn’t die.

What was the funniest part to you?

T: I don’t know.

Would you recommend it to your friends?

T: Well, I bet it would be too weird.

What lesson did you learn? What message was the movie trying to get across?

T: I don’t know. Maybe not kill anybody.

Who was your favorite character?

T: Thor. The one with Stormbreaker.

Who would you recommend this movie to?

T: Jayda. And older kids.

Do you think it’s for older kids?

T: Yes, because if little kids see Thor naked they’ll just laugh and that’s bad.

Did you think it was scary?

T: No. Oh some parts Jayda would be scared of. Some kids might be scare of the night. But I wasn’t scared of anything.

Would you want to watch it again?

T: Yes.

How would you rank it compared to other Thor movies?

T: It’s my favorite.

Q: What was your favorite part?

T: When Thor fights the bad guy.

How many stars would you give it?

T: 3 and a half or 4 stars.

Is it worth going to the movies to see/picking it for movie night/paying $30?

T: I think for young kids, it’s best to watch at home because at movie theaters it’s dark and that makes it scarier, and it’s loud. But you can turn it down at your home.

Of all the Thor movies, this is my second favorite. The absence of Loki was greatly felt and though there are some good laughs it didn’t have me rolling as much as some of the other movies, notably Thor Ragnarok, which is still my favorite.

Here is the Latest Home Upgrade That is Giving us Softer Hair and Skin: ARS Austin Review

What Parents Need to Know Before Taking Their Kids to See ‘Lightyear’

Wondering if it’s worth taking your kids to see Disney Pixar’s Lightyear? This spoiler-free Lightyear parent review should help you decide!

Lightyear is the latest installment in Disney Pixar’s Toy Story franchise. This time focusing on the movie character the toy Buzz Lightyear is based off of. The movie blasts off with a fantastic first act that had all of us on the edge of our seats. Unfortunately the story arc plateaus and doesn’t ever quite recover. Stars out great and ends just fine. It didn’t have the emotional gut punch that so many Pixar movies have (this could be good or bad), but it does give you some feel good vibes surrounding teamwork, friendship, and loyalty.

What I loved About Lightyear: Parent Review

Pixar is turning up the volume when it comes to diversity in their films. We got Soul, and Turning Red, now we get a beautiful cast of characters (albeit supporting characters) including a senior woman, beautiful Black women with gorgeous curls, an LGBTQ supporting character, and more! None of it felt forced or insincere.

Sox is a highlight of the film bringing humor and wisdom. And the film is jam packed with positive messages about working together, working through mistakes, forgiving yourself, and others. In fact one could argue that you’re getting beat over the head with so many messages that it’s hard to fully grasp them all on first watch. I think the story would be more powerful had they decided to focus on one. And though the animation is absolutely stunning, it feels a little like it goes against the opening line in the movie. Which leads me to what I didn’t love.

What I didn’t love About ‘Lightyear’: Parent Review

Bottom line, Pixar has set the bar so high that it’s just hard to keep up with themselves at this point. I did adore Turning Red, and fully expected Lightyear to be a new spin on an old franchise which it is, but at nowhere near the quality as the others in the series.

Overall we had less laughs, less tears, and just less emotion than we’ve come to expect. The complicated storyline involves some time travel which may be confusing for some viewers to follow, but if they’re young enough they might still be captivated enough by Buzz, Sox and friends to hang in there. My youngest (almost 4) got restless in the last quarter of the film where other movies we’ve taken her to see recently have held her attention longer. As you’ll see in my kids’ review. They liked it ok, but it’s not one they’re excited to go see again.

Also, the whole idea that this was the movie Andy watched as a kid just didn’t feel realistic and may be our biggest (and most petty) gripe.

Is ‘Lightyear’ scary or appropriate for young kids?

Zurg does make an appearance in this movie, as well as some robotic characters trying to catch the heroes. There are moments with creepy spider-like alien bugs that could be frightening for some young kids. As well as some laser shooting and some scares around deep space. A woman announces her engagement and is later shown pregnant and sharing a brief kiss with her wife. There wasn’t any swearing but some arguing and conflict among characters including a pretty lengthy brawl.

Enough about my thoughts, here’s what my kids have to say about Lightyear.

Lightyear Kids Review

What did you think of the movie?

J: I thought it was a good movie. I just don’t think it would be something Andy would watch.

T: I kind of liked it. Because I liked how they made new suits. It looked like the toy but he was a human. I also like how they fight Zurg.

What was the funniest part to you?

J: The pen and the cat.

T: The guy with the pen.

Would you recommend it to your friends?

J: Yes.

T: If they like the Toy Story movies and if they have a Buzz Lightyear toy and if they like it.

Who would you recommend this movie to?

J: To people who like Toy Story.

T: Well, I don’t have that many friends.

What lesson did you learn? What message was the movie trying to get across?

J: That you can have help, you don’t have to do it all by yourself.

T: It’s ok to make mistakes.

Who was your favorite character?

J: Sox

T: Buzz

Do you think it’s for older kids?

J: Both

T: If they like Buzz Lightyear, whatever.

Did you think it was scary?

J: No.

T: No! It was not scary.

Would you want to watch it again?

J: Yea, maybe not in theaters again.

T: Yea, in the theaters a few more times.

How would you rank it compared to other movies we’ve seen recently?

J: I liked Sonic 2 more. I liked this more than Jurassic World Dominion. But I liked Toy Story 1, 3 and 4 more than Lightyear. I liked Lightyear more than 2. If I were to rate them it would go 1, 4, 3, Lightyear, 2.

T: Sonic 2 more. I liked Jurassic World Dominion more. I liked Lightyear more than Toy Story, Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3. But I liked Toy Story 4 more.

What was your favorite part?

J: When Sox met Buzz.

T: When Buzz fought Zurg.

How many stars would you give it?

J: 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Is ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ Scary for Kids? Everything Parents Need to Know

Wondering if ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ is too scary for kids? This spoiler-free review of Jurassic World 3 should help you decide.

My family was counting down to see this Universal Pictures film. Mainly because Ty, now 9, has been a dinosaur-loving kid since he was 3. Even though he’s passed on that love to his now 3-year-old sister, we decided to have her sit this one out. And depending on the age and sensitivity of you kids, you might want to do the same.

Jurassic World Dominion is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action, some violence and language. There are quite a few swear words, and we’ll get into the intensity and violence in this review.

My Overall Review of Jurassic World Dominion

The action sequences are fun, and on par with some of the best action scenes in the Jurassic Park franchise. If you love dinosaurs you’ll love this. However, much of the film and even the story veers away from these which is a bit disappointing. The dinosaurs are more of a side, supporting characters that happen to be there in this film vs the main characters we’ve known them as in the past.

The plot (which feels hard to find) is very diluted and misshapen. It takes some of the weaker parts of previous movies to build into this one but it doesn’t come together well. As my son says “the talking human parts were boring.” Much because those talking parts had little or nothing to do with dinosaurs.

Jurassic World Dominion: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Loved seeing Jeff Goldblum, Sam Neill and Laura Dern back in their classic roles. Some scenes with them together feel a bit cheesy, other parts feel wonderful. We also get introduced to Kayla (DeWanda Wise) who is one of my favorite characters in the movie.

My son loved seeing Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) back in their roles. I loved seeing where they were and the family dynamic they were pulling together in this film though it feels a little short lived and shallow. But many of my favorite scenes surrounded the “Jurassic Park” and the “Jurassic World” teams interacting together in the third act. How we get there is so weird and convoluted, but I was happy to see it happen.

The fan service and callbacks are subtle enough and enjoyable and depending how much of a fan you are, almost make up for the poor plot.

Though I only rate the movie 2 stars I’d absolutely see it again. There’s just enough jump scares and action, and who knows, maybe next time I’d grasp more of the confusing plot. Speaking of jump scares…

Is Jurassic World Dominion Scary for Kids?

Since dinosaurs aren’t the main plot focus of Jurassic World 3, you kind of never know when they’re going to show up. Unlike other films in this franchise, it’s not as though there’s one big dinosaur predator they’re trying to outrun or escape, but multiple interesting-looking dinosaurs that they happen to run into along their journey to do other things. That said, there are several large, frightening-looking dinosaurs in this film. Including some we’ve never seen before. If you have a mini paleontologist on your hands they may be calling out names of them as you watch. Others might be scared of the big teeth and long claws.

As expected in any Jurassic World film, there are people who get eaten, both on and off camera. Most of them are people without speaking parts. There are several close calls for the characters we know and love including our favorite dinosaur characters. Some kids may find that just as or more disturbing.

Though this is a movie my dinosaur-loving preschooler may watch from home on the small screen at some point, Jurassic World Dominion would be quite scary for her to see on the big screen in a dark, loud theater. Even my son points this out in his review.

Is Jurassic World Dominion scary for kids compared to other Jurassic World movies? My kids think it’s the least scary of the bunch and I might agree. Mainly because dinosaurs eating people isn’t the plot. Still, it has its moments.

J: I don’t think there was a lesson.

T: Don’t leave your family or else you’ll get kidnapped.

J: Maisie

T: The T-Rex.

Is Jurassic World Dominion ok for kids?

J: Older kids

T: Older kids, and a little bit younger kids but not that much.

Is ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ scary for kids?

J: No, maybe for little kids because there’s a lot of creepy fly type things. I don’t think this one is as scary as the other Jurassic Worlds.

T: No! For young kids I think 3 was the scariest.

Would you want to watch it again?

J: Yea. But I wouldn’t see it in theaters again.

T: I would. Yes.

How would you rank it compared to other movies we’ve seen recently?

J: I liked Sonic 2 more. I liked Lightyear more than Jurassic World Dominion. I liked the first one the most, Fallen Kingdom the 2nd and this the least.

T: Sonic 2 more. I liked Jurassic World Dominion more than Lightyear. I liked this more than Jurassic World and Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom because this has the most dinosaurs.

What was your favorite part?

J: I liked baby blue. Beta.

T: T-rex fighting.

How many stars would you give it?

J: 1.5 out of 5 stars.

Is Doctor Strange 2 Scary for Kids? What Parents Need to Know

Wondering if Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is too scary for kids? This spoiler-free review will help you decide.

Last year my friend and fellow movie connoisseur Yolanda Machado, editor at Entertainment Weekly warned me to skip the final end credit scene during Spider-Man: No Way Home with my kids because it was a trailer for Doctor Strange 2. She told me Marvel was taking it in a darker, horror direction and I took her advice with a grain of salt. My kids did watch the trailer but I warned them that they probably wouldn’t be seeing it (lots of groans). I told them I’d watch it first then decide. All the while, in the back of my mind thinking worst case scenario I’d probably have them cover their eyes for a few parts. I was wrong.

What parents need to know about Doctor Strange 2 is that this is not on the same level of other Marvel Cinematic Universe films. This is not “Avengers level” violence or scary. This is intended to be a darker, horror film and it hits the mark.

I will admit that horror is not my genre of choice. The original Candyman gave me nightmares for years, so did The Ring. I can handle gore in period shows like Game of Thrones but I can’t stand it in slasher films. Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is more gruesome than gory and I’ll go into that in a moment leaving out character names. But first, my overall thoughts.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Review

Where Spider-Man: No Way Home brought the multiverse to us, Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness takes us through the multiverse. The movie hits the ground running and doesn’t let up much right through to the end. But there’s more action than character development. I appreciated the brief moments of dialogue that were enjoyable and sometimes even surprisingly funny. But it has nowhere near the depth we saw in the first Doctor Strange film. By the end of this movie I felt like I’d just watched a bonus season finale to WandaVision. It is a wild wide but when it comes to depth, it’s pretty shallow. However the post-credit scene does introduce a new character and has me wonder where the might take it next.

The special effects are really fun and I enjoyed one fight sequence in particular involving music notes. My biggest gripe throughout the movie was the urgency of the tasks paired with walking. I kept asking “WHY ARE THEY WALKING?!” throughout the film. But I guess that goes to show I was on the edge of my seat.

I did love the introduction to America Chavez and the diversity throughout the film. There’s a mention of her moms, and she rocks a pride pin on her jean jacket. Representation is so important, and while my kids won’t be watching this until they’re older, I’m happy the horror-loving fans will get another dose of diversity in the Marvel franchise.

Is Doctor Strange 2 Scary for Kids?

Short answer, yes. But it depends how old your kids are. I took my 16-year-old Marvel-loving sister as my +1 to the screening and she admits she was looking off-screen during parts of the movie when she was scared. I myself covered my ears for parts where I anticipated a startle. The PG-13 rating is deceiving especially since all Marvel movies are rated PG-13. I’ve been fine with my 9 and 11-year-old watching all of them up to Spider-Man: No Way Home (with a fast forward through a section of Eternals) but Doctor Strange 2 is on a different level.

When it comes to scary parts, there are the usual Marvel-esque monsters plus several startling moments, demons, possessions and creepy characters. There were several times during the film I turned to my sister and said “this is creepy” and one time in particular where I grabbed her and said “ok, I’m scared.”

The movie starts off like a familiar Marvel film then continues to go darker and darker as it progresses.

My sister says the gruesome level is on par with The Woman in the Window (which I haven’t seen). I’d probably say violence wise it’s a notch above some X-Men movies, with creepy parts that gave me The Ring vibes. If you’ve seen the What If series, it will prepare you for the weird turn this takes, but in a more adult film. There isn’t much swearing, and no sexual content, it seems creators used every bit of the PG-13 rating on the violence and pushed it to the limit.

How Bad is the Violence in Doctor Strange 2

The body count starts stacking up early in this movie. Without getting into specifics of characters I’m going to list off some of the violence similar to the way I do for Common Sense Media to help you decide if it’s too violent for your family: Someone’s neck is cracked and broken in multiple places, someone’s head explodes/melts, someone is sliced in half with a shield. A bunch of people die.

If you and your kids have been watching horror movies since a young age and you’ve been waiting for the day Marvel went dark, you’ll likely love the turn in Doctor Strange 2. If you’ve been going down my Marvel Movie checklist and are just excited to cross the next one off the list, this might not be the one. In fact I’ll probably add an asterisk and disclaimer to this one.

In the grand scheme of the Marvel Cinematic Universe time will tell how critical this is in the continuity. Aside from the introduction to America Chavez I don’t think this will add that much more to future films. My kids asked me if their favorite characters were in the film: Black Panther (no), Thor (no), Spider-Man (no), Scarlet Witch (yes).

All that said, the movie is quite eye-catching, mind-bending and had me on the edge of my seat. I’m not dying to see it again and I don’t think it’s something my husband would be interested in. But it was entertaining, just scary enough for me, but not scary enough to have me screaming in the theater. I’d give the movie 3.5 stars. Nowhere near as good as Spider-Man: No Way Home but I enjoyed it more than Eternals.

I’d recommend going to see this movie on a date night or with some friends then decide if it’s something your kids can handle especially if they’re younger than 14. It’s the honest heads up I’d want to have before buying tickets for my family and walking out with some frightened kids. Maybe we’ll have better luck with Thor Love and Thunder.

30 GREAT MOVIES TO WATCH DURING AAPI heritage MONTH AND BEYOND

May is the month of recognizing and celebrating the cultures, contributions, and influences of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI)! This month has been my peak of 2021 thus far, as I have learned so much about AAPI Heritage (my friend Preethi has a whole AAPI learning packet for families that we are loving!). But the teachings and conversion should not stop once June 1 comes by. We should all continue listening and learning from different voices. A great way I have introduced content from varying cultures into my home is through movies. Who doesn’t love them, right? It’s an excellent way for family-friendly fun while educating yourself, and seeing different people and cultures represented in the process. I’ve put together a list of Asian American and Pacific Islander movies on Disney Plus and beyond.

But before we jump into that I want to share a bit of my heart and say how important it is that we stop to appreciate people who are different than us. Pause these movies and have conversations. Our differences are our strength, not a weakness we should feel the need to hide from. Let’s try harder to love, not hate, and stand up for others who need an ally.

Asian American and Pacific Islander movies on Disney Plus

Aladdin

We all know and love this ancient tale. Aladdin, a kind street boy, is granted three wishes by a genie when he finds a magical lamp. He uses his wishes to impress the princess of Agrabah, Princess Jasmine, and along the way goes on an adventure of friendship, love, and conquering the evil usurper Jaffar.

Bend it Like Beckham

An early 2000’s hit, Bend it like Beckham follows the life of Jess Bharma, a British-Indian girl with a love for soccer. Jess does not share her parents’ or community’s wishes for her to get married and instead wants to pursue soccer. This leads to a tale about acceptance, disrupting the status quo, and fighting for what you want.

Big Hero 6

This Academy Award-winning Disney Animation film tells the story of Hiro, a robotics prodigy who loses his brother, Tadashi, in a tragic fire. He completes his brother’s unfinished robotics project, Baymax. He, the robot, and his friends form a superhero team to find the person responsible for the loss of his brother. Word of advice? Bring along some tissues.

Finding ‘Ohana

The theme of reconnecting to your roots is highlighted in this story about two Brooklyn-born siblings who are taken to Oahu to care for their grandfather, who suffered a heart attack. Here, they encounter a journal that sets them on a journey to find a long-lost treasure and, in turn, a journey of discovery.

The Jungle Book

Forget about your worries and your strife… Based on the literary classic by Rudyard Kipling, this tale shows how Mowgli, a child raised by wolves, must leave his family to escape Sher Khan, an evil Bengali tiger trying to kill him. Throughout his travels, he meets many other jungle animals and learns more about himself and the world.

Lilo and Stitch

Quirky, funny, and heartwarming. Who doesn’t love Lilo and Stitch? Lilo, a lonely little girl, mistakes Stitch, an unruly alien experiment who crash-landed on Earth as a dog, and adopts him. Lilo and Stitch go on the journey of discovering what friendship is and learn what it means to be a family. Spoiler alert: it means that no one gets left behind.

Moana

After the plants and fish start to die on her island, teenage Moana must brave the open sea to return the heart of goddess Te Fitti from Maui, a demigod, and bring balance back to nature. You will love Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Maui, along with the beautiful exploration of Polynesian culture. I know I did! Plus the soundtrack? Amazing!!

Mulan (1998)

A Disney animated classic, the film explores the journey of a Chinese woman, Mulan, who takes the place of her frail father in the army by disguising herself as a man. This ancient tale aims to show the flaws in patriarchal beliefs and systems.

Mulan (2020)

The 2020 live-action remake of the 1998 Disney original tells the same story of Mulan, a woman who disguises herself as a man to fight in a war, with slight changes to keep it fresh. This version eliminates the musical element and adopts a more realistic, serious, and dramatic tone.

Raya and the Last Dragon

It has been 500 years since dragons and humans lived in harmony in the magical Land of Kumandra. When Druun, a species of evil monsters came, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. When the Druun returns, Raya must find the last dragon to destroy the Druun and restore peace.

Rip Girls

This Disney Channel movie tells the story of 13-year-old Sydney Miller, who learns how to surf while visiting a plantation she inherited, called Makai. A lot of self-discovery needs to be done when she is faced with the decision of selling the five-generation old plantation or not. Rip Girls takes you right back to the early 2000s Disney aesthetic, and I love the nostalgia!

UP

A favorite in my home! UP is not only entertaining but teaches you so much about life that you thought you already knew but didn’t. When Carl’s wife Ellie dies, the 78-year-old commits himself to achieve one of his lifelong goals, finding Paradise Falls. He ties many balloons to his house (I’m talking about a lot of balloons) and begins to fly away in it to the South American wilderness. However, in mid sky, he shockingly discovers a stowaway, Russel, a little boy-scout who complicates his journey.

Wendy Wu

Wendy Wu’s perfect teenage life is flipped upside down forever when Chinese monk, Shen, shares with her that she is a reincarnated Yin warrior. She is faced with tough decisions and challenges to fulfill her purpose to defeat the ancient evil warrior Yin Lo. It has action, humor, and Brenda Song! What’s not to like?

Turning Red

Turning Red is another excellent addition to the Pixar library of animated films! Featuring an incredibly well-told story filled with humor, heartwarming moments, memorable characters, and valuable lessons on the importance of staying true to yourself, Turning Red is perfect for the whole family.

Shang-Chi and The Legend Of The Ten Rings

Shang-Chi is an action story with a brilliant blend of mystical, otherworldly scenes and down-to-earth characters wrapped into a heartwarming tale that captures Asian culture beautifully. If you are after cinematography and special effects that will make you gasp in awe, this is the one for you.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Short Films on Disney Plus

Bao

One of my favorite movies proves that just because it is a short film does not make it any less impactful! Bao is about a Chinese-Canadian mother who is experiencing empty nest syndrome. With no children in the house, she becomes lonely and sad, however, gets an unexpected and intriguing second chance at experiencing motherhood when her steamed bun comes to life. Bao is an Academy Award winner for a reason!

Float

This short film is the fourth to be produced in Pixar’s “SparkShorts” program, and it is undoubtedly one of the program’s best received. Float is essentially a story about acceptance and love. It is about a father who struggles to grapple with his son’s new ability to fly. He attempts to ground his son and is frustrated by his child’s inability to be ‘normal’ but soon realizes that his son’s happiness is more important than outsiders’ opinions.

Lava

This beautifully produced short film is a love letter of sorts to tropical islands and the oceans surrounding them. The story follows a lonely volcano that spends his days watching the wildlife interacting with their mates around him while he remains without one. In his sadness, he sings to the ocean every day for thousands of years, not knowing that a female undersea volcano listens to his singing every day and has fallen in love with him. It’s a touching tale told through stunning visuals and a definite must-watch this month and always.

Sanjay’s Super Team

It’s only seven minutes but packed with quality content! Sanjay’s Super Team tells the story of a young Indian boy who imagines Hindu gods as superheroes when he becomes bored when his father makes him meditate. The film is based on a (mostly) true story as writer and director Sanjay Patel also let his imagination run wild to get him through his father’s mandatory mediation sessions.

They soon meet Totoro, a giant rabbit-like creature who is a spirit, and go on marvelous adventures. It’s a family film in its purest form.

Ponyo

If you haven’t already noticed from this list, my family and I love Japanese movies. Ponyo is a perfect representation as to why. The film is about a goldfish who escapes from the ocean and is rescued by a five-year-old human boy. As they bond with each other, the story deals with resolving Ponyo’s desire to become a human girl. It’s complex, deep, and highly artistic.

Koshien: Japan’s Field of Dreams

Need a shot of inspiration? This unparalleled documentary about a high school baseball team and their journey to winning the championship is sure to give you an adrenaline high! Not to mention that it teaches you so much about baseball’s place in Japanese society.

Kubo and the Two Strings

With a star-studded voice cast and breathtaking animation, Kubo and the Two Strings is one to remember! The film revolves around Kubo, a young boy who wields a magical shamisen and whose left eye was stolen during infancy. He must battle evil to protect his family and solve the mystery of his fallen father, the greatest samurai warrior the world has ever known.

Okko’s Inn

This is a beloved tale about Okko, an orphan who goes to live in the countryside with her grandmother at a traditional Japanese inn. She soon falls into the tedious routine of caring for the building, but everything changes when she discovers kind spirits who keep her company and help her become comfortable in her new environment. It’s full of energy and color!

Over the Moon

I’ve already booked time off in my calendar to rewatch this fantastic production! Over the Moon tells the story of Fei Fei, an adventurous girl who builds a rocket ship to meet a mythical goddess on the moon. It takes you on a visual and emotional journey and stays on your mind well after the credits have rolled.

The Speed Cubers

Another documentary that teaches you a whole lot while still being funny and entertaining! It follows the journeys of Rubik’s Cube-solving champions Max Park and Feliks Zemdeg, with twists and turns throughout to keep you intrigued. But it goes further than just telling the story of competition; it explores friendship, respect, and hope for the future.

Spelling the Dream

An intriguing and educational insight into the Indian American experience and the traditional work ethic they practice. Spelling the Dream is a documentary about the recent obsession with competitive spelling-bees amongst the Indian American community. It explores critical themes of success, the “American dream,” and the immigrant family’s place in this discourse. It may not be the lightest watch, but it is most definitely an important one.

Spirited Away

A classic that will always be impactful! Spirited Away tells the story of a 10-year-old girl who, while moving to a new neighborhood, enters the world of Kami (spirits). Her parents get turned into pigs by the witch Yubaba, and she now has to find a way to free herself and her parents and return to the human world. It is vivid, magical and sweeps you away with the protagonist to a whole new realm for two hours of adventures.
