State fair scholarships deadline extended

MINOT, N.D. (KXNET) — All eligible high school seniors involved in 4-H or FFA in North Dakota are encouraged to apply for scholarships.

The Hess Corporation has several scholarships available through the North Dakota State Fair Foundation.

Seniors who are members of 4-H or FFA who plan to pursue secondary education or training in a career related to or in support of the oil and gas industry can apply for one of the eight opportunities.

There are three scholarships worth $10,000 and five scholarships worth $2,000.

Applications are due Friday, March 22, 2024 -- you can find the applications here.

Produced water spills reported near Renville and Killdeer

NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — Two produced water releases were reported to the North Dakota Oil and Gas Division on March 11.

One took place near Killdeer in Dunn County and the other was near Renville in Bottineau County.

The produced water release near Killdeer was reported by Horizon-Olson, LLC, and it was at the Killdeer West SWD #1 well location.

300 barrels were reported to have been released because of equipment failure/malfunction. Everything was contained on-site, cleanup is underway, and at the time of reporting, all 300 barrels were recovered.

The second produced water released near Renville was reported by Scout Energy Management, LLC, and even involved some oil. The release happened at the WILMS A1 well location.

10 barrels of oil and 500 barrels of produced water were released because of a water transfer pump failure. Everything was contained on-site, cleanup is underway, and at the time of reporting, all 10 barrels of oil were recovered and 490 barrels of produced water were recovered.

State inspectors have been to both locations and will continue to monitor if additional cleanup is needed.

New interactive MAR map available online

NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — A new interactive map of the potential for managed aquifer recharge (MAR) for North Dakota has officially been launched.

According to the North Dakota Department of Water Resources (DWR), the map is available on the department's website, and it provides information on the feasibility of capturing a portion of excess or abundant surface water flows to store in an aquifer for later use.

MAR allows aquifers to be used as underground reservoirs.

"Given the growth and progression of water development in North Dakota, many of the state's groundwater systems are now approaching full appropriation," said the Director of the Department of Water Resources, Andrea Travnicek. "As many of North Dakota's major groundwater systems approach sustainable limits, it will become increasingly difficult to approve additional appropriation without some form of augmentation such as MAR."

The department completed a statewide assessment this year to evaluate the feasibility and use of MAR in ND's glacial drift aquifers to extend and enhance resiliency.

The DWR will use that data to develop recommendations for future projects, as the department will consider the overall need for recharge, hydrologic conditions, source water suitability, water quality, environmental impacts, regulations, costs, and stakeholders.

"The report provides the foundation for a second phase of MAR assessment in North Dakota," said State Engineer, John Paczkowski. "More specifically, future efforts could include scenario modeling of MAR practices to address growing agricultural, industrial, and residential water needs."

Update: Vice-President Harris visits Minnesota abortion clinic

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Vice-President Kamala Harris visited a Planned Parenthood clinic on Thursday, marking what her office said was the first time a vice-president has toured a facility that performs abortions, as the White House escalates its defense of abortion in this year’s election.

“Right now, in our country, we are facing a very serious health crisis,” Harris said at the St. Paul facility. “And the crisis is affecting many, many people in our country, most of whom are, frankly, silently suffering.”

Although Democratic leaders in Minnesota have protected abortion access, neighboring states have banned or severely restricted the procedure.

“How dare these elected leaders believe they are in a better position to tell women what they need,” Harris said. “We have to be a nation that trusts women.”

Harris said she met two dozen health care workers at the clinic who had created an environment where patients can “be safe” and “free from judgment.”

Dr. Sarah Traxler, chief medical officer of Planned Parenthood North Central States, introduced herself as “a proud abortion provider” and called Harris’ visit a “historic moment.” She said the number of patients visiting the clinic from out of state has doubled.

“Everyone should have the right to access health care,” Traxler said.

Protesters gathered across the street, holding signs that said “life is a human right” and “abortion kills a human being.”

There are no restrictions on abortion at any stage of pregnancy in Minnesota. Biden won the state by 7 percentage points in 2020 on the way to defeating then-President Trump.

Abortion is currently illegal in more than a dozen states, including North Dakota and South Dakota, and is restricted in Iowa and Wisconsin.

BJ Omot To Enter Transfer Portal

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — North Dakota Men’s Basketball star, BJ Omot could be on the move. News broke Thursday afternoon that Omot intends to enter the transfer portal. The six-foot-eight sophomore reposted multiple reports that he will be entering the portal. The Mankato, Minnesota native was the Fighting Hawks leading scorer this past season averaging 16.7 points per game. He was named to the All Summit League First Team last week.

Darrion Jackson found guilty in Timothy Smith murder trial

MINOT, N.D. (KXNET) — Darrion Jackson, the man accused of killing Timothy Smith at the Vegas Motel in Minot last year, has been found guilty in his murder trial.

The jury deliberated four hours before returning its verdict.

A psychological evaluation of Jackson was order before sentencing.

The shooting took place in January 2023 at Minot's Vegas Motel. Responding officers at the time said they found Timothy Smith at the scene with gunshot wounds.

The probable cause affidavit stated Jackson was offered to spend the night in a hotel room with Smith and another woman. Police claimed Jackson and Smith had an argument, which eventually resulted in the shooting.

During the trial, Jackson told the jury that he didn't deny killing Timothy Smith at the Vegas Motel in Minot last year, but claimed he shot him in self-defense.

Jackson tried to paint a picture of Smith continuously threatening him.

The defense called Sompohi Guy, a friend of Jackson's, who is currently in prison for a different case involving Jackson to testify on that basis.

Guy told the court two months before the murder that Smith showed up to their hotel room, beat up Jackson, told Jackson he was going to kill him, and pointed a gun at Guy to stop him from helping Jackson.

Jackson then took the stand and told jurors that on the night of the murder, Smith told him he was going to kill him, and then reached for his waistband.

Jackson says he feared for his life and also pulled out a gun and shot Smith, killing him.

Jackson says he then ran from police because he was scared they were going to kill him. But later that night, Jackson called the police and admitted to shooting Smith, claiming self-defense.

The state claimed, based on testimony, evidence, the five gunshot wounds to Smith, along with Facebook messages between the two, that there was no proof Smith ever threatened Jackson.

Sentencing for Jackson is scheduled for August.

Kim Jong Un test drives new tank and orders troops to prepare for war

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un joined troops training on a new tank model and drove one himself, state media reported Thursday, as his rivals South Korea and the U.S. wrapped up their annual military exercises.

It’s the third time Kim was reported to have observed military exercises since the start of the 11-day South Korean-U.S. drills, which he views as rehearsals for an invasion. That’s a less provocative option than missile tests. North Korea has intensified launches since 2022 and ramped up belligerent rhetoric this year.

At the tank drills Wednesday, Kim praised the country’s latest tank as “the world’s most powerful” and told his troops to bolster their “fighting spirits” and complete “preparations for war,” according to the official Korean Central News Agency. The other two drills he inspected recently were dedicated to artillery firing and maneuvering exercises.

The tank was first unveiled during a military parade in 2020, and its rolling during Wednesday’s drill indicates that it’s ready to be deployed, South Korean experts say.

Photos of the tank released by North Korea show it has a launch tube for missiles, a weapons systems the former Soviet Union already operated in the 1970s. The new tank could pose a threat to South Korea, said Yang Uk, an analyst at Asan Institute for Policy Studies, but it remains to be seen whether it can be mass produced.

The North’s Defense Ministry last week threatened “responsible military activities” in reaction to the South Korea-U.S. military drills, which involved a computer-simulated command post training and 48 kinds of field exercises, twice the number conducted last spring. The U.S. and South Korea have been expanding their training exercises in a tit-for-tat response to the North’s weapons testing spree.

Concerns about North Korea’s military preparations have deepened since Kim vowed in a speech in January to rewrite the constitution to eliminate the country’s long-standing goal to seek peaceful unification of the Korean Peninsula and cement South Korea as its “invariable principal enemy.” He said the new constitution must specify North Korea would annex and subjugate the South if another war breaks out.

Kim’s moves signal “North Korea’s fundamental change on its South Korea policy, beyond just rhetoric,” as the North’s previous push for inter-Korean unity had allowed it to make a steadfast call for the removal of U.S. troops in South Korea, a senior South Korean presidential official told a small group of reporters Monday. He requested anonymity, citing the delicate nature of the issue.

Observers say Kim likely wants to use his upgraded weapons arsenal to win U.S. concessions like extensive relief of international sanctions on North Korea. They say North Korea is expected to extend its testing activities and ramp up warlike rhetoric this year as South Korea holds parliamentary elections in April and the U.S. a presidential election in November.

“The South Korean-U.S. training is over, but the North’s isn’t over yet,” Yang said. “They won’t just stand still ... they’ve been talking about war,”

None injured in Williston apartment fire

Williston, N.D. (KXNET) – No injuries were reported in an apartment fire in Williston Wednesday afternoon.

Crews were dispatched to the Retreat Apartments on the 3600 block of 7th Street West, at 3:34 p.m. on March 13th for a report of a multi-family residential structure fire.

Upon arrival, crews found an evacuation was in progress. An alarm was activated due to a report of flames "the size of the apartment complex." The fire had already been extinguished by a sprinkler system, significantly reducing potential loss and limiting damage to a single apartment.

The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and related to stove-top cooking. No injuries were reported from this incident.

Burnsville woman charged with buying guns used in Minnesota standoff that killed 3 first responders

MINNEAPOLIS (AP/KVRR) – A Burnsville woman, Ashley Dyrdahl, has been charged with illegally buying guns used in the killings of three Minnesota first responders in a standoff at a home in the Minneapolis suburb of Burnsville, where seven children were inside, federal authorities said.

The 35-year-old Burnsville woman conspired with the shooter between Sept. 21 and Jan. 25 to illegally get him guns, U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger announced Thursday at a news conference. Luger was joined by Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent Drew Evans, Burnsville Police Chief Tanya Schwartz and Burnsville Fire Chief BJ Jungmann.

Officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, both 27, and firefighter-paramedic Adam Finseth, 40, were slain during the standoff. Their memorial service two weeks ago drew thousands of law enforcement officers, firefighters and paramedics.

Investigators say Shannon Gooden, 38, opened fire without warning after lengthy negotiations, then later killed himself.

Sgt. Adam Medlicott, 38, survived being shot while tending to the wounded.

Court records show Gooden wasn’t legally allowed to have guns because of his criminal record and had been entangled in a yearslong dispute over his three oldest children. The children in the house were ages 2 to 15 years.

Police were dispatched to the home around 1:50 a.m., according to the bureau. Gooden refused to leave but said he was unarmed and that he had children inside. Officers entered and negotiated with him for about 3 1/2 hours to try to persuade him to surrender. But just before 5:30 a.m., the bureau said, Gooden opened fire on officers inside without warning.

Elmstrand, Ruge and Medlicott are believed to have been first shot inside the home, the bureau said. Medlicott and another officer, who was not injured, returned fire from inside the home, wounding Gooden in the leg.

Ruge and Medlicott were shot a second time as officers made their way to an armored vehicle in the driveway, according to the bureau. Finseth, who was assigned to the SWAT team, was shot while trying to aid the officers, it said. Elmstrand, Ruge and Finseth were pronounced dead at a hospital.

Gooden had “several firearms” and fired more than 100 rounds before killing himself, the bureau said. A court document filed by a bureau agent said the initial 911 call was about a “sexual assault allegation” but did not provide details.

John McConkey, a Burnsville gun store owner, told reporters late last month that part of one of the firearms found at the scene was traced to his store and had been bought by a purchaser who passed the background check and took possession of it Jan. 5. He said authorities told him that the individual who picked it up was under investigation for committing a felony straw purchase, and that Gooden was not there at the time.

Gooden’s ex-girlfriend, Noemi Torres, disclosed this week that she had testified before a federal grand jury that was investigating the case. She told The Associated Press on Wednesday that she was asked about her relationship with Gooden and whether he could have coerced her into buying him a gun. She said she told the grand jury that she would not have done so because “I was scared for my life” because of their history of domestic abuse.

Fatal fire in North Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) – Moorhead Police confirmed a man has died in a house fire Thursday morning. The fire happened at the 2000 Block of 56th Ave. N.

The call came in shortly after 10 a.m. The Moorhead Fire Dept. said the state fire marshal is investigating the incident. MFD confirmed that two dogs were saved from the house.

This is an ongoing investigation.

Animal shelters help rescue 17 dogs from ‘hoarding situation’ in Wilkin County

FARGO (KVRR) – Two local animal shelters were involved in the rescue of 17 dogs from a “dilapidated farmhouse” in Wilkin County.

Homeward Animal Shelter and 4 Luv of Dog Rescue accepted the dogs after they were seized on January 17.

Homeward took in 10 of the dogs, the other 7 went to 4 Luv of Dog. One of the dogs is blind.

“I was one of the people in that house when we were getting those dogs and their living conditions were horrendous. For them to be now in loving foster homes and now moving into adoptive homes is amazing.” said Heather Clyde, the operations manager at Homeward.

“It means so much to see people really step up and embrace the dogs,” said Erin Buzick, the foster coordinator at 4 Luv of Dog Rescue. “They all have some needs. They’re scared, they’re shy. Some of them have some medical needs and I don’t think anyone has paused for a second. Everybody has really embraced them and give them everything that they need.”

In a social media post, Homeward says the floors were covered in a several inch thick layer of dirt and feces.

“The house has no heat, no running water, and the only electricity seems to be running from an extension cord into the porch, where a small heater keeps the people, and the porch dogs, slightly warmer than the remainder of the house.”

“For 6 weeks, both of our organizations cared for these dogs behind the scenes, waiting for legal proceedings to be done before they would officially become ‘ours’. On February 28th, we finally received word that although legal proceedings were not officially done, the owner had voluntarily relinquished their rights.”

NDSU student shares how A.I. minor has impacted his education

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – Last year, a new artificial intelligence minor was launched at NDSU.

Ian King, who is a junior at the school, is one of those students that has added the new minor.

This minor helps students broaden their understanding of AI, how it can be used and provides them hands-on experience with this ever-growing technique. These courses center around mathematical and computer foundations. Along with a course specifically for artificial intelligence.

“Artificial intelligence can be very flexible with what it is tailored to do and what you want it to do. Being able to have that flexibility in the workplace or just anywhere really I think is important overall.” said King.

The use of A.I. can impact careers like software developers, data scientists and machine learning engineers.

A Lake Park woman’s journey after severe spinal injury

FARGO, (KVRR) – This is Isabella Syvertson, a 23-year-old from Lake Park, Minn., who is on the road to recovery after fracturing her L1 vertebrae. She had a horse accident on November 28 which caused loss of feeling and movement from the waist down.

“I actually didn’t feel anything when I flew through the air. Whether it was from the adrenaline or the burst vertebrae, I kind of felt like Woody from Toy Story and just fell onto the ground.” said Syvertson.

Now she is walking and trying to get back to the one thing she loves doing. And that’s horse riding.

“Getting back on a horse has been my absolute number one goal. A lot of times it’s just thinking of it,” said Syvertson. “It’s kind of sad not being able to go out there on the really nice days. The really nice cool, calm days. It definitely makes me get that little itch inside me.”

Spinal injuries are life altering. For Syverston, that is no different. She has some feeling in her legs and the bottom of her feet. And she knows it could have been way worse considering the nature of her injuries.

“Compared to some people I get to be up, I get to be walking. I get to use my legs. I can’t feel my legs all the way but I get to use them. That is absolutely a huge thing for me.” said Syvertson.

What helped in her recovery process was her time at the Craig Hospital in Colorado. There she was able to learn how to walk again thanks to the staff there.

“They lift you up in this machine and I remember the first couple of times I wanted to puke. I definitely had to sit back down, get back up, sit back down. I remember telling my dad I will be up and walking out of this place.” said Syvertson.

Syvertson also says that the support from her parents, boyfriend, the hospital staff and friends helped her get to this point as continues her road to recovery.

Sheyenne Crossings Hosts Grammys and Grampys

WEST FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – Sheyenne Crossings in West Fargo celebrated this awards season by honoring their own Grammys and Grampys.

The third annual event honored residents from throughout the senior living facility.

The honorees had their hair and makeup done by volunteers from FMCT, before walking down the red carpet with members of the West Fargo Fire Department, receiving a statuette and having their picture taken.

The emcees shared stories from the residents’ lives, from skydiving on a dare, to touring Washington D.C. with a CIA agent.

Organizers say the event helps encourage a sense of community among the residents.

“We have such a different variety of people here,” Sheyenne Crossings Director of Life Enrichment Becky Butenhoff said. “It’s great to get everyone together into one building, because we have different areas of the building, and this is one big event that we all get together.”

After being presented with their awards, residents enjoyed cupcakes and champagne.

2nd Half Recap: West Fargo Sheyenne takes down defending champion Fargo North, 78-62, to win their first championship in program history!

After being down 59-53 with 7:30 to go in the game, Sheyenne closed out the game with a 25-3 run to win.

The Mustangs turned the dial all the way up on offense in the second half, finishing with four players scoring double digits on the night. Caleb Duerr led the way with 19 points, Barry Kpeenu finished with 16, Tommy Ahneman scored 14, and John Angau had 11.

Both Duerr and Ahneman also had 12 rebounds each to finish with double-doubles.

The team as a whole shot 50% from the field in the second half and 88% from the free throw line where they had 25 total attempts.

On defense, Sheyenne was able to find a way to shut down the Spartans' offense and hold them to only shooting 32% from the field.

Jeremiah and Matthew Sem led the Spartans with 21 and 16 points apiece for the Spartans. A strong effort from the two that ultimately wasn't enough to overcome the Mustangs.

1st Half Recap: Fargo North and West Fargo Sheyenne head to halftime tied at 34 in what has been an absolute thriller of a championship matchup.

For Fargo North, the Sem brothers (Jeremiah and Matthew) have led the charge for the Spartans, scoring 11 points apiece - which leads the game. Jeremiah Sem has also been fantastic dishing the ball too, leading the game so far with 4 assists.

On the other end, Sheyenne has been lethal from three, shooting 42% from beyond the arc so far. Caleb Duerr currently leads the Mustangs in scoring with 10 points.

Both teams will try to figure out how to slow the other down in what has been a fast-paced, high-scoring game.

2nd Half Recap: Fargo Davies takes down Bismarck, 64-55, to win their first state title in program history!

Led by Ashton Safranski and Karley Franks, Davies held onto their first half lead, built on it, and never looked back. Safranski led all scorers with 24 points on the night with Franks ending with 16 points.

The real story of the game though was the Eagles' defense, putting a halt to the Demons duo of Paige Breuer and Jersey Berg who had been electric throughout the tournament but struggled to find consistent scoring tonight. Breuer was held to 5 of 20 shooting on the night, finishing with 17 points, while Berg shot 6 for 17, finishing with 12.

Today, the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Public Health Division responded to the final report of an audit of the Department of Health conducted by the Office of the State Auditor that covered the biennium ending June 2021. “The auditor’s office spent over one year completing their inquiry. During this time, they reviewed testing of compliance and financial records, contact tracing, COVID-19 deaths, COVID-19 vaccine storage, handling and distribution, COVID-19 testing and reporting, and COVID-19 dashboards and information systems and had no findings for these areas,” said HHS Public Health Division Executive Director Dirk Wilke.

The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) is reporting a case of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) in an individual in eastern North Dakota. Testing performed at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed the individual was infected with hantavirus. The individual was hospitalized but has since recovered.
