Samsung's Next Unpacked Event Will Take Place July 10 in Paris

There’s been quite a bit of rumors about where and when the next Samsung Unpacked launch event will be, and now we’re hearing from a report out of Sammobile that the date has been chosen, as well as a location.

Samsung Unpacked will happen on July 10, and it’ll be based in Paris.

Paris might sound like an odd place for Samsung to hold its second biggest launch event of the year, but with the Summer Olympics happening in Paris this year, it makes plenty of sense. Samsung is a big sponsor of the Olympics and typically creates an Olympic version of their latest flagship phone. So why not bring media to Paris to launch the new Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Fold 6 this year?

What to expect from Samsung Unpacked

Samsung typically holds two Unpacked events each year. The first event is typically in January or February, and that’s where the new Galaxy S is announced. Normally, it’s just the Galaxy S; for example, this year, it was the Galaxy S24 lineup, and Samsung did tease the Galaxy Ring. But that’s it. The second event tends to have a lot more products and happens in July or August. That’s this Unpacked.

Last year, at Unpacked in Seoul, Korea, Samsung unleashed the Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Tab S9 series, and the Galaxy Watch 6 (and Classic). However, this year, it could be even more product-packed.

Obviously, we’re expecting to see a Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6. But we’ve recently seen rumors of Samsung doing a Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra, in fact we’ve even found proof of it just today. There’s also talk of the Galaxy Tab S10 series, Galaxy Watch 7 series, and, of course, the Galaxy Ring. We’re also due for a new pair of Galaxy Buds. Last year, Samsung did launch a pair of Galaxy Buds FE in October with the Galaxy S23 FE, so that could happen again this year.

Either way, this Summer is going to be a busy one, with plenty of products from Google, Samsung, OnePlus and even Apple, to check out.

Discord CEO talks rejecting Microsoft’s $10 billion offer & app’s future

The social media messaging application Discord might have started as an app for gamers. However, through time, it has attracted users from all walks of life including fandom and other niche communities, even going as far as turning down a purchasing offer from the tech giant Microsoft which was reportedly worth $10 billion.

Discord CEO Jason Citron recently went on the Decoder podcast to answer some long-standing questions. In addition to shedding some more light on the company’s thought process for rejecting Microsoft’s offer, Citron also gave his prediction for the future of Discord, and more importantly the internet.

Discord CEO expands on turning down Microsoft’s offer

Discord was in talks to sell itself to potential suitors in 2021. Among those suitors was Microsoft, which The Wall Street Journal reported offered at least $10 billion to buy the messaging company. However, Discord turned down all offers as the gamer-focus chatting platform remained independent.

According to the Discord CEO, the decision to turn down Microsoft’s acquisition offer wasn’t anything noteworthy to them. Discord had received offers before and after the Microsoft one, and at the end of the day, it all boiled down to the Discord team wanting to grow the company. According to Citron, the team wishes to capitalize on opportunities to help Discord flourish.

The acquisition topic wasn’t the only time mention of Microsoft was brought up in the interview. Another thing the Discord CEO was asked was if Discord considered big game companies like Microsoft competitors. This was especially of note as the Discord platform has multiple games, making it a competitor in the gaming scene. Additionally, Discord’s subscription service Discord Nitro is technically a direct competitor to Microsoft’s Xbox Live.

However, Citron stated that communications tools are the platform’s focus. While they have a games team, it’s fairly small. The goal is to allow anyone to use Discord and opt into the developer preview to build an HTML5 game. That’s exactly what’s happening with several game developers actively using Discord’s services to aid them.

Is a smaller and private internet the future?

In a world where public social media profiles are the norm and countless users share their pictures and videos on apps like Instagram for millions to see, Citron believes that smaller and more intimate spaces are the future. An example of this is Instagram with its close friends feature.

Mainstream social media will continue to grow. However, the Discord representative believes the desire for smaller spaces will increase too. The small places can be Discord servers with some close friends or a group chat where only a handful of people communicate and share images. Through these spaces, people can spend quality time with loved ones without fear of judgment.

ChromeOS lets you edit Microsoft 365 files

Chromebooks have taken the market by storm—so much so that Taiwanese tech giant Acer alone accounted for over 900,000 units sold in the third quarter of 2023. Needless to say, many users rely on Chromebooks to go about their day. Although these affordable notebooks offer great value, their inability to edit Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files seamlessly was a significant drawback. Well, that changes today.

ChromeOS can now open and edit Microsoft 365 files

Back in January 2023, Google previewed a nifty feature that furthered Microsoft 365 integration with ChromeOS. The tentative update would guide users through a one-time setup to access and edit Microsoft 365 suite of apps easily. Clearly, the preview attracted a lot of eyeballs as Google finally rolled out the update to the end users.

Consequently, users reliant on Microsoft’s suite of services can now officially integrate the Redmond giant’s apps into their Chromebooks. When opening a Word document, for instance, users will be prompted to open it in a relevant Microsoft 365 app. The prompt will guide users to Install Microsoft 365 and connect to their OneDrive accounts to the Chromebook Files app.

This is a boon for Chromebook users as they no longer have to rely on Microsoft’s OneDrive website to sift through their personal files and other data. The integration will also tax your Chromebook less, which in turn would help conserve its battery life.

Although Google has started rolling out the update, the feature may take a couple of weeks to hit your Chromebook. To check if your Chromebook has the update, search for the flag #upload-office-to-cloud and activate it. While you’re at it, you should also update which apps can access your location to improve your privacy settings. The Pixel 8a is basically a certainty at this point given all of the leaks, but there are still more things to be seen thanks to these newly leaked high-res renders. Google is suspected to unveil these phones at the upcoming Google I/O conference happening in May. With the phones to receive an official reveal next month, it won’t be long before there will be even better-looking images of this device, or before consumers will be able to hold their very own Pixel 8a.

This isn’t the first time the Pixel 8a has leaked. In fact, it’s leaked in just about every capacity at this point. There are still some unknowns, like official pricing, specs, or availability dates. But the handset has been leaked in both images and even a hands-on video. Recently we might add.

It’s also worth noting that these high-res renders from today, posted by Evan Blass on X, are more or less the same as the ones we exclusively reported on back on April 19.

New Pixel 8a high-res renders confirm colors

Since these aren’t much different from the leaked images that we reported on last week, there’s not much new detail to be discovered from them. However, they do serve to further solidify the color availability. The Pixel 8a looks to be coming in Porcelain, Mint, Bay, and Obsidian.

Again this isn’t really new information. It does make those earlier leaks more credible though. And if nothing else, it gives you a good look at the devices. The images shown here represent the device from the front, back, and sides, though not all angles. Still, it never hurts to have another look at an exciting device that’s on the way.

Google has opened its second hardware office in Taiwan. The Google campus at TPark campus in New Taipei City strongly indicates the search giant is betting big on hardware.

Google’s new hardware office boasts a sustainable and eco-friendly design philosophy

Google opened its first office in Taiwan way back in 2006. The company has now reportedly started operations at a new office in New Taipei City. The old Google campus will continue to function as normal.

In a detailed blog post, Google boasted about how it had adopted a sustainable, eco-friendly, and cultural design philosophy. The company has even uploaded a brief video about the new office in Taiwan.

Google has built the new office with sustainability as a core design and operations philosophy. The search giant has mounted 240 photovoltaic solar panels on the roof of the office. These feed power to massive rechargeable battery packs.

The kitchens in the new office operate entirely on electricity as fuel. The other eco-friendly initiatives include water-efficient fixtures, non-potable water for toilet flushing, refrigerants with low global warming potential, and a stormwater capture system.

Google’s campuses around the world have a distinct vibe that matches the region. The new office is “inspired by Taipei”. There are several “green zones” that mimic the lush greenery and serenity of Taiwan’s subtropical forests.

Is Google going big with its Android OS and Pixel hardware?

Taiwan continues to dominate the world of semiconductors and other specialized hardware. The country is the birthplace of the world’s first Android phone.

Google’s second office in Taiwan is a clear indicator of the company’s growing interest and focus on its hardware department. Specifically speaking, Google could dedicate the new hardware hub in Taiwan to the engineering and development of future Pixel smartphones and other devices.

Google recently made some drastic changes to hardware and software teams. The company has essentially clubbed Pixel hardware and Android teams. The new “super team” will try to infuse AI into Google’s myriad products.

The new “Platforms and Devices” department could be Google’s attempt to consolidate Pixel, Android, Chrome, and ChromeOS. Coupled with the brand-new hardware design and development office in Taiwan, Google appears to be diving deeper into physical products.

NVIDIA brings StarCraft and legacy Diablo titles to GeForce NOW

GeForce NOW is getting some legacy titles from Blizzard this week, including those in the StarCraft franchise. As a long-time GeForce NOW user, it’s a little surreal to see Blizzard games coming back into the fold. If you remember back from the GeForce NOW beta, Activision Blizzard games used to be available on the service. NVIDIA removed these about four years ago and players weren’t exactly thrilled about it. This was of course not NVIDIA’s fault, as Activision Blizzard requested that its games be removed from the service.

Thus ending the ability to play any of them on GeForce NOW before the service ever fully launched. Fast forward to late last year, Activision made its return to GeForce NOW with the Call of Duty HQ. It then finally added some Blizzard titles in February of this year, including Diablo IV, Overwatch 2, and Hearthstone. As of today, four more Blizzard games are being added.

StarCraft: Remastered and three more Blizzard games come to GeForce NOW

StarCraft and Diablo fans are eating well this week, because each franchise has two games joining the GeForce NOW library. This includes StarCraft: Remastered, StarCraft II, Diablo II: Resurrected, and Diablo III. If you own any of those games on battlenet, you can play them in the cloud now. Keep in mind that you won’t be able to play some of these on your phone or tablet. Only one of the four has controller support and that’s Diablo II: Resurrected. The other three only support mouse and keyboard.

That being said, you might be able to get these to work with a wireless mouse and keyboard setup. It wouldn’t be the most practical though. However, if you have a laptop that isn’t very powerful, this is a perfect use case for some GeForce NOW gaming. Blizzard still has a few games that aren’t on the service, such as World of Warcraft, which a lot of players are probably hoping for. But with more titles being added, there’s a chance that Blizzard’s full roster of games may eventually make it over.

There are 12 more games to enjoy this week

If you’re not into the Blizzard games being added today, there are still 12 more new games being added this week. This includes Dead Island 2 (the Steam version), Bellwright, Phantom Fury, Oddsparks: An Automation Adventure, Age of Water, Manor Lords, 9-Bit Armies: A Bit Too Far, Dragon’s Dogma 2 Character Creator and Storage, Islands of Insight, Metaball, Stargate: Timekeepers, and Tortuga – A Pirate’s Tale.

Additionally, Remnant II’s ‘The Forgotten Kingdom’ expansion is available this week. Outside of new games, NVIDIA is pushing out an update to GeForce NOW that adds additional AV1 support for more devices. This includes the Mac M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max. So if you own any of those Mac computers, you can properly stream GeForce NOW games going forward.

The rumors on the Internet have been suggesting that Samsung might introduce a new foldable device called the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra, and now we can confidently share with you that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra is indeed set to be released. We spotted the upcoming foldable device that Samsung will introduce in our database, and Samsung will unveil the Z Fold 6 Ultra as part of the upcoming Fold 6 series.

Samsung had never introduced an “Ultra” model in the Fold series before. Samsung released its first “Ultra smartphone,” starting with the Galaxy S20 series, and recently unveiled the highly successful S24 Ultra. Samsung will now introduce an Ultra model in the Fold series, which will be named as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra.

Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra is now officially confirmed, coming

The specs for the Z Fold 6 Ultra aren’t out yet, but there are some rumors circulating about the Z Fold 6. It’s rumored to feature the same camera setup as the Z Fold 5 and Z Fold 4, which is a triple camera setup. This setup includes a 50MP f/1.8 primary camera with OIS, a 10MP 3x f/2.4 telephoto camera with OIS, and a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera. Additionally, the Z Fold6 is expected to be thinner and lighter compared to previous Galaxy Z Folds. The Z Fold6 may have a built-in stylus slot for the S Pen, just like the S24 Ultra. Now let’s focus on what we know about the Z Fold 6 Ultra.

We spotted the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra with the model number SM-F958N in our database. We believe this is the “Fold 6 Ultra” because Samsung typically designates the last digit of the model number as 8 for Ultra phones. For example, while the model number of the Galaxy S23 is SM-S911x, the model number of the S23 Ultra is SM-S918x. Similarly, while the model number of the S24 is SM-S921x, the S24 Ultra is SM-S928x.

Samsung has never introduced a foldable device with the model number’s last digit being 8 before. For instance, the model number of the Fold 5 is SM-F946x, whereas the model number of Fold 4 is SM-F936x. In short, all previously introduced Galaxy Folds have model numbers ending in “6”. Since SM-F958N is present in our database, we can confidently say that Samsung is indeed working on an “Ultra” foldable device that will be unveiled soon, namely the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra. The internal model number of the upcoming Z Fold 6 Ultra is “Q6A“. It’s not possible to say anything about the exact launch date at the moment; we expect Samsung to unveil the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra at the Galaxy Unpacked event in July.

It’s great to see the Galaxy Z Fold Ultra series coming out

The idea of Samsung releasing an Ultra foldable device is quite exciting. However, it’s worth noting that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra will likely only be sold in Korea. We believe this because apart from the SM-F958N model in our database, there is no other device. The last letter in the model number of Samsung phones indicates the region market where the device is available, and Samsung has reserved the letter N for Korea. It seems that the Z Fold 6 Ultra will only be sold in Korea. In addition, the normal Galaxy Z Fold 6 model will also be sold in Korea. Galaxy Z Fold 6’s Korea version has the model number SM-F956N.

Now, if we discover a different model number in our database for this device, that could be a big clue. This might mean that Samsung plans to release it not just in Korea but also in Europe and the US. Unfortunately, based on what we know now, it doesn’t seem super likely at the moment. Additionally, Samsung will likely introduce two different Folds, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra, but the exact differences between these two devices are not yet known. However, we can confirm that the Z Fold 6 Ultra will come with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chipset.

Reminders in Google Keep will soon transfer to Tasks

Google Keep is a wonderful little app for helping you with everything from taking quick notes to making up a shopping list, and you can even add reminders to the notes you create. The reminders feature is helpful because the note might not be of relevance when you create it. Maybe you simply didn’t want to forget the idea you had. Here’s another example. Let’s say you create a shopping list for stuff you need. But you aren’t going to the store for another few days.

You’d be able to set a reminder for a time (or location) on that list so you get an alert the day you plan to do all the shopping. Google is going to be changing the way reminders in Keep work going forward. So if you use the reminders feature in Keep, you’ll want to “take note” of these changes.

Reminders in Google Keep will begin to show up in Tasks later this year

The main change here is that the reminders you set up in Keep will eventually make their way to Google’s Tasks app. This won’t be immediate, but it’s also unclear when exactly users will start noticing reminders popping up in Tasks.

Google says in its official blog post that this will happen sometime this year, but it doesn’t give a date. “Over the next year, those Keep reminders will automatically save to Google Tasks,” the company says. It also mentions you’ll still be able to see those eeminders in Keep. So it doesn’t appear that the feature is leaving Keep, just that they will be populated in Tasks as well.

The reason for this is so Google can consolidate any reminders you make into one app. Tasks has already been integrated with Calendar and Assistant. The idea is that you can have Tasks be your go-to option for managing any to-dos in Google’s Workspace ecosystem.

What happens to location-based Reminders?

Unfortunately, there’s no explanation from Google here on this. It briefly mentions location-based reminders in Google Keep in the official announcement, but only to highlight that this is something you can do in Keep. As Android Police points out, Tasks doesn’t currently support location-based reminders. So those won’t show up in Tasks unless Google adds it sometime before reminders start showing up in Tasks.

Reminders making the jump to Tasks isn’t a huge surprise, as it was rumored back on April 17 that this was likely to happen. That initial leak was spotted by @AssembleDebug on X, who also spotted Google’s official post about this change.

AI can pretty much be implemented into every aspect of our lives, and that’s For better or worse. When it comes to the health industry, there could definitely be some major benefits. Dr. Hon Pak (SVP and Head of Digital Health Team, MX Business at Samsung Electronics) talked with members of Samsung’s Health Advisory Board and talked about how AI can augment wearables (Read the full review here).

Right now, powerful artificial intelligence usually exists on bigger devices. However, that’s been changing over the years. At first, you needed extremely large models held on massive data servers for any sort of generative AI. However, nowadays, it is possible for a smartphone to perform on-device AI through efficient models.

So, AI is reaching smaller form factors. This is relevant because the logical next step for AI is in wearables. Imagine having a generative AI assistant on your Smartwatch. There’s no telling how that could augment (or degrade) your experience.

Samsung speaks about AI and wearables

This isn’t an announcement that Samsung is working on bringing AI to its Galaxy watches. However, with the way that AI is progressing, we shouldn’t be surprised if the company does so in the future.

During the interview, one question asked by Dr. Hon Pak was: “What do you see as the future of health and what role does technology play in it, especially when combined with Generative AI?”

As a response, Professor Myung Jin Chung, Director of Samsung AI Research Center at Samsung Medical Center (SAIC), spoke about the importance of AI when it comes to sifting through and ascertaining health data. We all know that smartwatches are great at collecting a bunch of health data on us. Well, Chung mentioned that AI can better assist in managing the health data collected and help streamline the entire process.

One thing that was brought up by Dr. Michael Blum, M.D., CEO and co-founder of medical analysis platform, BeeKeeper AI, was that AI technology can be instrumental in taking the data collected from SmartWatches and better anticipating certain health issues and diseases.

Right now, it’s not recommended that you use your smartwatch as a replacement for an actual doctor. Even powered by AI, this is true. However, it’s possible that AI could help your smartwatch be a better early detection device.

This is only one example of how AI can be very useful to many people in different ways.

Threads gets Hidden Words tool to filter out offensive content

Meta has been improving and adding new features to its Threads (its Twitter clone) since its launch in June last year. The latest feature to reach the platform from Instagram is the Hidden Words tool. This functionality will automatically filter out offensive content from your feeds.

The new feature has arrived mere hours after the platform hit more than 150 million monthly active users. The company has achieved this feat in less than a year since its inception, outpacing X/Twitter in the US.

Threads’ Hidden Words tool will automatically filter out potentially offensive words

In a post on Threads, Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced that the Hidden Words feature can automatically remove offensive content. It will apply to both your “Following” and “For You” feeds on the platform. In addition, it will filter out search results, profiles, and replies to your posts containing offensive words. Earlier, the Hidden Words tool was only applied to the replies on Threads.

It’s worth mentioning that the users can add their own specific words, phrases, or emojis to the settings in Threads. This way, they can cast a wider net over the offensive content that the platform filters out. The company has mentioned that the users can turn the Hidden Words on or off anytime they want. Meta’s Instagram first started allowing users to filter out offensive words from their comments in 2016.

Threads is also testing the ability to mute notifications for interactions with posts

Mosseri has also revealed that Threads is testing the ability to mute notifications for interactions with your posts. You will be able to turn on/off the notifications by pressing the bell button in the top-right corner of a post. In addition, the brand will add a new feature that will let you choose who can quote your posts. The same will allow you to unquote these posts by yourself. All three new features will be available to all Threads users globally in the coming days.

More features are coming to Threads soon

Apart from these features, Threads will add the functionality to let users clean up their timelines in a new way. This feature is currently being tested and will allow users to archive individual posts manually. The users will also be able to automatically hide certain posts after a set period of time. The company is also testing the chronological search results feature. This is one of the most requested features among the Threads community at the moment.
