Sources of Additional Information Updated and Reorganized

For over a decade, O*NET OnLine occupation reports have contained a section labeled “Sources of Additional Information.” This “SAI” provided customers with a list of sources external to the O*NET Program that included occupationally relevant information, such as related jobs, specialties, and industries. SAI listings were also made available to program and application developers via O*NET Web Services.

Recently the O*NET Center conducted a preliminary exploration of the use of ChatGPT to supplement the SAI listings. This effort proved successful, adding sources to 106 O*NET-SOC occupations and leading to a new total of just under 9,000 linkages to information for customers to explore. SAI information is newly organized. For the vast majority of occupations, this section is now called “Professional Associations” and is grouped into categories:

National Associations
Regional Associations
Accreditation, Certification, & Unions

For military occupations (i.e., those in the “55” job family), this section is now called “Military Career Summaries” and includes information from Careers in the Military external site when available.

Paper-and-Pencil O*NET Interest Profiler Updated

The O*NET Interest Profiler is a vocational interest inventory designed for use in educational planning, career exploration, and career guidance. A paper-and-pencil version is available for use in settings where internet access is not available or where it is prohibited (e.g., correctional facilities).

The Score Report and Career Worksheets (Career Starter and Standard) are updated to reflect new RIASEC descriptions. The Career Listing is updated to include new high-point interest codes and updated job zone data. Download the materials and start helping your clients explore their interests and linked careers! O*NET Database and websites updated

The 28.2 release of the O*NET database includes the following:

New related occupations for all 923 data-level occupations.

17 technology skills and 6 tools used related to 11 occupations were added from customer input.

Published metadata were expanded from 2 decimal places to 4 for Standard Error and Confidence Interval fields.

My Next Move, Mi Próximo Paso, My Next Move for Veterans, O*NET OnLine and O*NET Code Connector are updated.

RIASEC vocational interest information updated

The 28.1 release of the O*NET database updates vocational interest information, technology skills, and alternate titles.

Specifically:

RIASEC Occupational Interest Profiles (OIPs) and high-point codes for all 923 data-level occupations were developed using machine learning.

An updated listing of 162 “Hot Technologies,” based on employer job postings from across all occupations, resulted in 11,400+ occupation linkages.

Updated “In Demand” technology skill designations, based on employer job postings from within each occupation, led to approximately 2,500 “In Demand” skill linkages across 489 occupations.

90+ new technology skill linkages related to 75 occupations were identified from employer job postings.

450+ alternate titles related to 237 occupations were added from a review of Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAPs), customer input, and other sources.

Updated military information included in O*NET websites

The Military Occupational Classification (MOC) crosswalk has been updated by the Department of Defense (October 2023) and incorporated into O*NET OnLine and My Next Move for Veterans. Supplementing this crosswalk with additional sources of data, including the ASVAB Career Exploration Program external site and DOD COOL external site, provides transitioning veterans with a wide variety of careers to potentially explore. Developers can also access the latest data from O*NET Web Services.

New Apprenticeship Opportunities section in O*NET OnLine

The occupation reports within O*NET OnLine now have an “Apprenticeship Opportunities” section. Where available, see examples of apprenticeship titles vetted by industry and approved by the U.S. Department of Labor for use in a Registered Apprenticeship Program. Then dive directly into Apprenticeship.gov external site to learn more about opportunities related to the occupation.

In addition, an updated Registered Apprenticeship Partners Information Data System (RAPIDS) crosswalk is incorporated into O*NET OnLine and O*NET Code Connector.

Developers and researchers can also access the apprenticeship-to-occupation linkages from O*NET Resource Center—Crosswalks or O*NET Web Services.

Updated BLS information included in O*NET websites

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) external site released updated employment totals and projections for 2022–2032. This information is now included within O*NET OnLine, My Next Move, Mi Próximo Paso, and My Next Move for Veterans. The updated information is also incorporated within the Bright Outlook feature included within the O*NET sites.

Based on a new publication of the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) external site, the Occupation Handbook Crosswalk Search and the occupational reports within O*NET OnLine have also been updated.

Interactive O*NET Reference List Updated

O*NET Database and websites updated

The O*NET 28.0 Database release updates 90 occupations with data from job incumbents and occupational experts. This type of data is available for a total of 853 O*NET-SOC occupations. This release also updates Detailed Work Activities (DWAs) for 65 occupations. For more information on these updates see: O*NET 28.0 Database Overview.

The new data is incorporated within My Next Move, Mi Próximo Paso, My Next Move for Veterans, and O*NET OnLine.
