At the same time, there will be confusion over what symptoms might be allergies and which ones might be related to the highly contagious Coronavirus.

Today I’m going to talk to you about the difference between Coronavirus and allergies so that you can hopefully be able to tell them apart and treat them appropriately.

Coronavirus vs. Allergy symptoms

Spring allergy symptoms tend to start with itching and a clear runny nose. With Coronavirus, it is more likely to start with a fever and a cough rather than a runny nose. If you’ve had a history of spring time allergies – and your symptoms are the same as when you’ve had them before, you most likely have allergies again. One hallmark of allergies that isn’t common with COVID19 is itchy eyes, itchy nose, or possibly an itchy throat.

The main symptom of COVID19 to look out for is the fever because it is highly unlikely for allergies to cause a fever in most people. If you tend to feel like you are hot all the time, check your temperature a few times while you are feeling fine and check it again later if you start to feel worse with a cough or sore throat.

A report from the World Health Organization (WHO) that examined cases in China in February 2020 shed more light on these symptoms. That report found that around 88% of COVID-19 patients had a fever and 68% had a dry cough. Keep in mind, that the cough is usually a dry cough. Additional symptoms of coronavirus have included shortness of breath and difficulty breathing, sore throat, diarrhea, fatigue and body aches. Another commonly reported symptom of COVID 19 is a loss of sense of taste and smell – which is uncommon with allergies.

Important Note

It’s important to note that even if you have a regular flu that is common to this time of year, it can be hard to tell the difference. According to the government, if you have a cough, sore throat and fever, you probably have Coronavirus. Even if you have the symptoms, you may not actually have the virus – please get tested to confirm if you do, do not just assume you have it. Earlier in the season, people weren’t able to get tests, but now you can, so you should definitely confirm if you suspect that you have it.

Asthma is an underlying condition that can get worse with either allergies or COVID19. So you have to make sure that you are on top of any medications or treatments that you need for your asthma.

Ask me anything!

Hopefully this has helped to shed some light on how to differentiate between allergies and Coronavirus. Next, I’ll be sharing the differences in treatments so you know how you can treat and alleviate the symptoms of either of these. The Spring detox is a cleansing tradition I do every year and invite you to join me for the experience.

But why Spring? Why is it such a good time for a cleanse?

It is a vitally important time of year if you have allergies, but also because Spring is the time of the liver. The liver is the organ that handles your body’s ability to detoxify. That is the main purpose of the liver – to cleanse. Your body has a natural ability to cleanse itself and it’s always paying attention to what goes in, and making sure that you are safe. Your immune system and detoxification systems are always at work taking care of you! My seasonal reboot provides your liver and body with the tools that will optimize it’s ability to do its job properly.

In Spring there’s also a lot of wind, and movement of energy. The liver’s job in Chinese medicine is to regulate the movement of energy in your body, deal with the emotion of anger, help your eyes be healthy, and support your menstrual cycles. According to Chinese medicine, each organ has a time of year so Spring time is for the liver – Which is why Spring goes so perfectly with cleansing.

Here’s a short list of some of the benefits to doing a spring cleanse:

Improve allergies

Support healthy menstrual cycles

Improve mood

Improve energy

Clear toxins better

Lose weight

Look younger

Brighten skin

So if you’re ever going to do a cleanse, Spring is the time to do it.

I’m going to talk about the benefits listed above as well as answer some of your questions in a free webinar. We are always vulnerable to new or unknown infections coming along. And every few years there is a new infection. Our big fear is a pandemic that will rage around the world putting all of us at risk for illness or death.

Our immune system is at the root of our ability to protect ourselves from ALL infections. I’d like to share some insight and tips with you on how to build up your immune system and keep away unwanted infections and illnesses.

No more fear

I have spent over 20 years perfecting taking care of people who have unknown or undiagnosed illnesses – many of those are hidden infections, and I’m here to tell you that you don’t need to be afraid. One of my specialties is in Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

For thousands of years, one of the most important premises of TCM philosophy is to take proper care of your immune system, since it guards you from outside invaders (also known as infections)

The Foundations of Healthy Immunity

It has always been most important to have a healthy immune system. If you have a healthy immune system, then you can fight off anything. This is why I have always focused on helping people build and maintain the best immune system possible.

Even if you don’t have a strong immune system or you’re worried it’s not strong enough, there are ways to bring in reinforcements that help your body resist an onslaught of illness.

It all starts with a basically healthy immune system. You may already be doing this. Here are 5 things to look for that show if you have a healthy immune system:

You have a strong digestion.

You sleep well most nights.

You’re able to be around others who are sick and not get sick.

You have plenty of energy to do what you need to do.

If you get a little cut on your hand or elsewhere – it heals fairly quickly (good connective tissue)

Here’s how to get a good immune system (You know all these tips – I’m just restating them):

Eat LOTS of fruits and vegetables – more vegetables than fruits

Go out and get plenty of fresh air and sunlight. Or at least make sure you have enough vitamin D on board in winter.

Get rest when you need it (this is especially important during high stress times – when you might not want to rest because you’re too busy or have too much to do)

Exercise regularly.

Practice good hygiene habits, but don’t overuse the hand sanitizer (evidence has shown that may actually decrease immunity by making bacteria and viruses resistant).

Ways you can help your immune system

If you are a person who tends to get infections pretty easily, you’re going to want to take something to protect your immune system. Medicinal mushrooms have been used in TCM for thousands of years to help immunity. They have been researched in modern science and shown to help protect against cancer and build immunity. One product I like is Host Defense. It’s a 16 mushroom formula made with organic mushrooms that helps to protect your immune system. You can take it throughout flu season or while you’re traveling or going into an area where there is danger of being exposed to someone with a virus. Take 1 capsule twice per day normally but if you think you’re in danger of catching something, you can up that dose to 2 capsules twice per day. I often give this to my patients in fall to act as an immune builder.

You can also take high doses of vitamin D as a protector. You can take 20,000 – 50,000 IU in a day or over the course of several days to keep from getting sick.

High doses of vitamin C will also help to keep your immune system strong and able to fight away sickness.

Depending on your symptoms, there are also specific herbal formulas that can help you. For example, YIN QIAO is good for sore throats and fever symptoms. There’s also a wonderful formula called Wellness Formula readily available at most health food stores. You can take it every 2-4 hours to prevent yourself from getting sick or keep yourself from getting sicker if you’re already sick. This would work well for Coronavirus or for any sort of unknown viral infection.

Breathe deeply! Moving air through your lungs and body helps you push out bad bacteria or viruses.

Go to my Instagram or Facebook and comment or message me if you have any questions about your immune system or what I mentioned here!

Inexplicable ailments, chronic pain and other mystery issues with your body do not have to be a forever thing. Do you believe that they can happen to you?

I’m here to talk about the miracles of healing and why you should never give up on finding healing – no matter where you are or what your journey looks like.

What is a miracle?

A miracle in healing is an event that occurs that is unexpected or different from what you would normally think would happen. Many times we assume too much based on our condition and what we have and haven’t tried before. When it comes to healing, miracles happen all the time so never rule yourself out.

Finding My Purpose

I believe that one of my most important purposes in life is to help people experience miracles in healing. Ever since I was very young, my great grandmother was my very best friend. One day she collapsed in front of me and when that happened, I didn’t know what to do. A few days later and after she had been taken to the hospital, my mom came to tell me that my great grandmother had died. On that day I decided that I wanted to find a way to bring her back into my life. I started to imagine a miracle that could possibly bring her back to me. That day, I became determined to have miracles of healing.

The Battle with Daily Headaches

My patient, Julie came in for help because she had excruciating headaches every single day. These headaches started a few years previously when she had sustained a few head injuries. She had tried everything to find relief from her headaches. By the time she arrived in my office, she was unable to go to work or do her normal sports activities. Her whole life was being destroyed by these headaches and I could see the anguish in her face and the faces of her family members who sat with her in my office to discuss the possibility of healing or finding any kind of relief for her. She had even tried acupuncture without any sign of relief.

The Path to Healing

First I suggested that she go on a gluten and dairy free diet. Often when you’re in chronic pain, you can develop leaky gut – a condition where foods that you may not have reacted to ever before can cause an allergic reaction. Gluten especially can be hard on the nervous system. I then gave her a special acupuncture treatment for head injuries. Her headache got better the very same day of the acupuncture treatment. After just a few months of following the diet and getting a couple more acupuncture treatments, Julie was back to work and and active in sports again. She was able to live and enjoy her life as a functional young woman again.

Never Give Up

This is just one story that shows why it is so important to never give up on healing – even if you think you have tried everything or have experienced pain or sickness for too long, there is always hope. Every situation may not be this easy and healing may not always work this quickly, but sometimes miracles happen and you heal seemingly suddenly and unexpectedly. Hold out for miracles, and never give up on on your healing journey. Wherever you are and whatever you’re battling, healing is possible.

Go to my Instagram and comment or message me if you have experienced or witnessed a miracle in healing!

Inexplicable ailments, chronic pain and other mystery issues with your body do not have to be a forever thing. When you’re having a hard time in your own body, it may feel like you cannot renew. Sometimes it’s hard to see past the roadblocks in front of us but all it takes to find renewal is to make one small change.

Then make another small change.

And another.

Renewal ultimately comes over time and through continuous small changes in your life, tweaks to your daily routine or even adjusting certain thought patterns.

Bigger changes and solutions come from small changes and adjustments so do not get discouraged. I am here to encourage you and ensure you that THERE IS HOPE for your healing in 2020 and beyond. It may not be easy, but it is possible.

Where to start

Begin with one small thing like an eating habit or a sleep habit. Pick one healthy item to eat more often. Set your alarm at a different time to create slight changes. Try making a habit of waking up every morning and drinking a glass of water and lemon juice to start your day.

One step at a time

These are small things but science tells us that small changes are more achievable than many different changes all at the same time. We often try to take on too big of a goal or too many changes at one time and it ends up overwhelming us and causing us to quit. By choosing one little thing at a time, you will gradually make progress that is sustainable.

Start now!

Since it is the beginning of the year, renewal is something that comes to mind naturally. I encourage you to take advantage of the urge to start something new or to make a change. Start with one small thing right now and share what you will be working on for the next few weeks. Go to my Instagram and comment or message me about it. I want to hear about what change you plan to make!

Happy New Year!

Inexplicable ailments, chronic pain and other mystery issues with your body do not have to be a forever thing. Why do I feel so tired when I shouldn’t feel tired? Why do I have trouble sleeping? Why do I feel crazy?

Have you asked yourself these things before? Let’s chat about perimenopause and how it effects your body.

Changes

When the symptoms of perimenopause come, they often come unexpectedly and they happen in a way that feels rather SHOCKING.

You may remember when you were younger and going through puberty. During this time, you most likely had similar feelings of going insane and frustration about bodily changes. But now, you’re going in the opposite direction and things are starting to feel crazy again – but different. So what’s going on?

Hormone Imbalances

When your hormones go out of balance, your body begins to experience symptoms that don’t seem to be in tune with who you are. One of the symptoms is having trouble sleeping or another symptom could be weight gain that you didn’t expect. There are emotional mood swings that make you feel angrier, more irritable or more emotional around your period. All of those things are happening because your hormones are starting to shift.

Estrogen & Progesterone

Estrogen regulates your periods and your ovulation. So a few things might happen that change your period in noticeable ways. Some of these changes include: mood swings, hot flashes, migraines, trouble concentrating, and depression. Estrogen also affects your weight, vaginal lubrication and your ligaments and tendons!! So you might experience such odd things as vaginal discharge you didn’t expect, or have more injuries when you exercise.

On the other hand, progesterone symptoms come in the form of having difficulty sleeping, feeling moodier around your period and feeling more bloating and irritability around your period. Severe PMS symptoms are often related to progesterone imbalance. You could also experience longer or heavier periods, cycles that are closer together than they should be, and depression,

It’s not uncommon for your estrogen levels to stay fairly high while your progesterone levels tend to drop earlier. So you can expect moodiness, periods that are out of whack or trouble sleeping to come first because those tend to mean your progesterone levels have dropped and your estrogen levels didn’t drop.

What’s Next?

So now that you know how to spot what’s going on and understand a bit better what is actually going on inside of you, how about some solutions for all of this? If you are looking for solutions or a remedy for the chaos of perimenopause, check back next week where I’ll talk about what you can do to feel better after your hormones start to shift.

Inexplicable ailments, chronic pain and other mystery issues with your body do not have to be a forever thing. Do you know what it is? It can be confusing to define when you are in menopause, and maybe you don’t even care. You might want an explanation for all the mysterious symptoms you start to have – possibly even as early as age 35.

My Story

Last weekend I had the privilege of speaking at an event called Wise Pause, all about menopause and how to deal with it. It was a great event. There were many speakers about every topic related to menopause – Including menopause for the working woman.

When I first started experiencing peri-menopausal symptoms I felt like I had gone crazy! Mood swings, anger, and weight gain, but still having periods every month. I didn’t realize at the time that those were peri-menopausal symptoms and they were happening when I was only 42!! The toughest part was the inability to lose weight. I had 20 pounds I couldn’t get to budge.

Menopause at Work

I learned that in the UK they are developing programs to educate women and their fellow workers about menopause in the work place so that it would go more smoothly. We have nothing of the kind here in the US. It’s all thanks to a women named Deborah Garlick who has created work place programs to help women survive the symptoms of menopause in the workplace. Her website is Henpicked.net. I like her positive approach to the whole idea of menopause. Supporting us in living our best lives and finding what makes us feel good.

What is Menopause?

So.. what is menopause anyway? Menopause itself is defined as a period of time that starts when you have not had a period in a year. Until then, you are perimenopausal. And after that, you are post menopausal.

The symptoms of menopause include all of the following:

Hot flashes

Night sweats

Sleep issues

Weight gain

Mood swings

Fatigue

New onset of digestive issues

Urinary incontinence

Brain fog

Depression

Anxiety

Intolerance to foods you used to be able to eat

More prone to autoimmune issues

And more..

Each woman experiences these symptoms in varying degrees, and as I’ve said, they can begin as early as age 35.

Many of these symptoms are treatable with some simple measures.

If you are beginning to have some of these symptoms, start by learning about your options. How you eat, how you exercise, and when you sleep all play a role in how you feel. It might be as simple as going to bed earlier, eating a high protein breakfast when you first get up in the morning, and not working out as hard as you used to.

Stay tuned!

I will be doing a whole series on menopause.

Next week – What’s happening to My Body???

Inexplicable ailments, chronic pain and other mystery issues with your body do not have to be a forever thing. It’s important because listening to your body helps you to start finding your own healing path.

Your Unique Path

When you have been dealing with a health issue for a long time and struggling to discover the relief you need – finding your healing path is the mission. Your body and everything that happens to you is unique so finding your own unique way to heal is important. As you listen to your body and learn about what works best for you, the answers and solutions will begin to show up and become clear.

How to Listen to Your Body

So how do you listen to your body? What do you do and what does it take to truly listen and find clarity? I’m going to teach this throughout the month of October in a four-week series packed full of tips, tools and guidance on how to do it right and find the answers you need.

Right now, I’m going to start you off with a couple of tips that will help you get heading in the right direction so you can start this journey of finding the right healing for yourself. My first advice is to start with what you know. You already know some things about how your body works right?

Start with What You Know

You know when you’re tired. You probably know when you’re hungry. You often know when you’re feeling cranky and you will most likely know when you’re in pain. I invite you to start looking at the things that you already know about how to listen to your body. By paying attention and observing these things that you know, you can start making observations about the trends, causes, effects and the things that tie into them.

Just by starting to listen more closely and observe more thoughtfully, you will pick up on important messages and signals your body is giving you that will ultimately lead you down the road to healing. Start with basic observations and leave a comment about something surprising or different that you are noticing that maybe you didn’t notice before.

Learn More!

If you are interested in learning more and going deeper into finding your healing path, I will be offering a course in October that will help you gain a better understanding of how to listen to your body better.

Inexplicable ailments, chronic pain and other mystery issues with your body do not have to be a forever thing. When impatience takes over, we often lose our ability to make the best decision – we miss signs and signals that are meant to direct us. So what does patience have to do with a praying mantis? Let me explain.

The Praying Mantis

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and we were talking about the praying mantis. There had been a praying mantis hanging around near my doorstep for a few days, just sitting there! It fascinated me that he was sitting around for so long in the same place so I looked it up online. Apparently, patience and the praying mantis have a lot in common. The praying mantis never makes a move until it knows for sure what the next move is going to be. It is a simple, yet genius, principle that serves a significant purpose.

Patience Within Healing

As for me, I have never been the patient type of person because moving slowly is a difficult thing. When you’re on a healing journey, patience tends to be an issue. This is because you have been feeling crummy and you want to start feeling better now. As soon as you get the slightest clue as to what might be wrong, you tend to want to take something that will make you feel better – now!

Often, on a healing journey, it takes some time to feel better – It doesn’t happen right away. You could have a detox process that you need to go through as you are healing or maybe there are layers of issues you need to work out one-by-one before your body really starts to feel better.

Be aware that learning patience might even be part of the lesson behind what is going on with you.

Today, I invite you to explore the concept of patience and what it takes to be patient. How do you learn to listen to your body in such a way that it gives you the clues that you need right when you need them?

Inexplicable ailments, chronic pain and other mystery issues with your body do not have to be a forever thing. style="font-size: 10.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">If you’ve had physical therapy for an injury, pain, or post-surgical rehab, it may surprise you to know not all PT is created equal. In fact, a lot of physical therapy can be grouped into one of two categories: traditional, insurance-driven practices and alternative/holistic cash-based practices.

As someone who's practiced both, I'm sharing a few reasons I think anyone looking for true, long-term healing should give holistic physical therapy a try. Here are a few ways your experience with a holistic physical therapist may be different from the norm:

1. We may cost more up front, but we're worth it in the long run.

First, let me acknowledge that I realize not everyone has a choice and that your finances may be the driving force behind who you decide to trust with your body, mind, and soul. But I'm going to nudge you now...what if all that money saved ended up in partial relief, incomplete healing, or no attempt at integrating all the important parts of you that contribute to the healing process?

What happens then is you’ll be back. Or resentful. Or thinking PT just doesn’t work or that the therapist wasn’t good enough or some other situation leaving you dissatisfied and no closer to your goal of feeling good and living life to the fullest.

The biggest difference between traditional physical therapy and alternative or holistic physical therapy is the therapist’s ability to evaluate and treat all of you, no matter what your doctor wrote down on your prescription.

It’s this holistic and inclusive approach—and I’m not just talking about all your body parts; I’m talking mind and soul, too—that creates the environment for optimal healing to take place.

2.
