So my Playstation 4 Pro died yesterday. I bought it in 2017 and it’s been acting funny for about year now, something I chalked up to the HDD getting on in years. Last September I tried to replace that HDD, failed, and didn’t try again. So I think this old 2017 HDD finally beefed it and now the system hangs on a black screen. Turns out: I kind of need that console, even if it’s finally, slowly losing support!

So sometime in the next couple weeks I suppose I’ll be forced to run a fundraiser stream to do something about it. Either try another HDD replacement (cheapest option, about $100), buy a refurbished Pro (middle option, about $200) or straight up just fund an entire Playstation 5 (pipe dream expensive option, $400-$500+).

What I’d like is if you have anything you’d like to watch me stream, now would be a good time to tell me. I have a giant (I mean truly giant) backlog of games, and an equally large backlog of games I’ve wanted to stream – including Freedom Planet 2, Triple Trouble 16-bit, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Undertale, and more. I mean, here’s just the games I have installed on Steam:

I’ve already had more than one person ask if they can already donate in advance, which is great! I’m, uh, not sure what to say to that though other than you can donate through the usual places. I was planning on just having tips go through StreamElements, but Logan in the chat last stream said that wasn’t working (even though it seems fine to me?) The only other way would be through my Paypal.me for now given I never got around to setting up a Venmo or anything else (should I?).

I’ll announce the stream once I can nail down a time, because it might be good timing with something else soon.

Sounds Like the Robotnik Racing game is a symptom of “Creator groupthink” or “being in a bubble” They are all so used to their idea of difficulty, they forget what most people outside their group is used to. Think they’ll change the balancing?

Given they patched it day-one to shorten up the tutorial, I think they'll do something. How much they do is the real question. Some of this will need more than a quick fix. Tracks need to be changed, mechanics need to be reworked, etc. It could stay like this for many months while they work on sanding down rough edges, and how much they sand them down is unknown.

If I were them, I would lay out some fast, easy changes they can get out in the next couple weeks and use that as a platform to say "a more serious rework is coming." Even if the easy changes are just temporary bandaids, you know? More of a hot fix.

I don’t think there’s an NDA or anything since anybody can sign up for the beta, but woof, Sumo Digital’s new kart racer, Stampede: Racing Royale

I have never seen a racing game with netcode like this. Now to be fair to Stampede, I’m semi-intentionally messing it up on purpose – I was uploading a Youtube video while I tried the beta out, which is a surefire way to guarantee a bad ping. And in my case we’re talking an average of 350-500ms.

But having a ping that bad highlights a couple very bizarre netcode quirks in this game. For one, having a ping that high feels like I’m streaming the game. Like it’s Stadia or Amazon Luna or Project XCloud or something. It’s not a video feed, it’s a real game, but that’s what it feels like because of how the latency manifests. I push the analog stick to steer and there is a measurable time before my racer responds.

That’s not the weirdest thing, no. When a race starts with a ping that bad? It’s like controller input from everyone around me leaks into my racer. Until the pack spreads out and I sufficiently fall enough behind, it’s like my guy is receiving input from everyone around him. My kart is being driven in all directions at once. It goes away once nobody is near me anymore, where it goes back to just being laggy.

It’s great that they have an “everything and the kitchen sink” approach to the tracks they include. Like no idea was ever considered bad or too outrageous or too complicated. But I also feel like there are tracks in this game (and even in SRB2 Kart before it) that would have been cut in a more mainstream product for being esoteric and too unfriendly to anyone but the development team.
I’ve blinked near bumper mines that launched me with such force it sent me backwards half a lap. On something like the Gumball Machine track a bumper mine will probably actually send you back an entire lap if you hit it just the right way. It doesn’t even have to be a bumper mine, either. I got invincibility and tried to plow through someone with some shark missiles and it bounced me away about as strong as a bumper mine would have.
There are tracks where a “shortcut” will actually put you driving the wrong direction, like they expect you to blast through a speed barrier at top speed, and then figure out how to flip a U-Turn and still maintain the advantage of that shortcut.
And the entire Balloon Park track could have only been made by someone with a deeply black heart. I have never in my life ever seen a kart racer track that’s trying to make you lose the race. Every single turn of that thing is a new, awful nightmare you have to figure out how to steer around while worrying about how if any of the eight other racers even so much as breathe on you then you’re never going to recover.
Even the Crash Team Racing remake was more forgiving than this, and I hate that game and refused to play it once I finished my review.
I have never played any racing game that has made me feel more dejected and miserable than Dr. Robotnik’s Ring Racers. Once you clear the first set of tracks and see the credits roll, it turns in to a playable headache. I feel like I swallowed a nuclear warhead playing this game tonight.
That’s the last time I’m touching this thing until I hear about serious balance changes.

And when it comes to difficulty balancing, we get

“Well I, a member of the development team, can do it. So it’s doable, and that’s good enough.”

“Our testers can do it, who are mainly close friends that are already deeply familiar with the game. That means the world at large can do it.”

“We want a true challenge for our most die hard fans that will last them a long time.”

“Besides, there are plenty of difficult games that are very successful. Those games are for real gamers, and we want our game to be that, too.”

All top level difficulty and nothing for anyone below that. It’s the same drum I always beat.

And it’s not like this is a Dark Souls, or a Cuphead, where you just “get good” and figure out the intended strategy. This is chaotic by design. No matter how much determination you put in this thing like being able to stop the item roulette exactly where you want it, you still have 7 other racers on the track with you, and every single one of them is a wild card you cannot control, bait, or definitively plan around.

The answer some people would put forth is that Ring Racers has an Easy Mode. If I’m mad at Normal Mode, just drop it down to easy and shut up, right?

And to that I say: No.

I don’t feel like I should put on training wheels just to enjoy this game.

And two: even with the training wheels on, the game will still decide at random to knock you on your ass. Infuriated, I wrote last night’s post after giving up on City Escape on normal difficulty.

Going back through on easy, I still ended up at the end of a chain where everybody lined up and took a shot at me. I spent most of the race in 8th place only to claw my way to 5th just before the finish line.

Against CPU racers on easy mode.

I’m not the problem here.

I beat the drum about difficulty balancing so loudly and so violently because it’s a mistake I’ve made on my own games, and when I see something like this, I know the potential there is to have something better. It’s something I’m trying to love and it’s pushing me away. And unlike The Unleashed Project, where I was making myself miserable over something optional, like S-Ranks, in Ring Racers the difficulty is the main obstacle to even being able to play the game at all.

A lot of love, care and attention went into this game. I’ve said it in a few places but it’s the most innovation the kart racing genre has seen in over a decade. It is a crowning achievement.

But nobody is ever going to see that when all they get is an ass-clenching, teeth-grinding nightmare.

I think something Sega has done a good job with is revealing how many people are secretly Sonic fans but kind of keep it hidden due to reputation or whatever.

The one time it became the most obvious was during the Sonic Symphony concert in 2021.

I'll never forget it. For one, solid, two hour block, it felt like everybody on the internet was sharing in a good time over Sonic the Hedgehog. Even people who did not normally talk about this kind of stuff seemed to be enjoying themselves. It was this crazy feeling of, like, magical unity. It felt like world peace had been achieved. I don't know any other way to describe it. Everyone fell into a state of reverence over this concert.

And I think that's a good signifier of the true potential in Sonic's audience. Of the number of people who would celebrate being a Sonic fan more if there were more reasons to.

Sonic the Hedgehog is not niche. Unironically enjoying Sonic the Hedgehog is the niche.

Well, what is Bubsy? What does Bubsy "working" look like? I believe Mike Berlyn, the director of the original Bubsy (and Bubsy 3D) said they were trying to blend Sonic and Mario, and I think they lean more in the direction of Sonic.

So it's a platformer that's fast, but not too fast. You've got a character with a smug attitude, but a lot of the humor is cheesy wordplay.

I dunno, that seems pretty easy to nail to me. If you make a decent platformer you're already better than 90% of the Bubsy franchise.

Tails in the movie is a completely separate character from the one in the games so I don't really understand how the two relate. Like, there's nothing stopping them from still addressing things mentioned in Sonic Frontiers in future games. The movies wouldn't have "fixed" that.

Like, maybe if the Knuckles show was a huge runaway success it might have lured Sega into doing more spin-off content but I don't see a world where this determines the fate of story elements set up in the games or whatever. They are separate things.

Thoughts on Dr. Robotnik’s Ring racers and the current version of SRB2 Kart?

I never dug too super deep in to SRB2 Kart because I very rarely play online games with randos and I had no real consistent group to play with otherwise. Like, I tried to play the few times Tracker hosted a server, but he lives in the UK and I'm on wifi so it just didn't really work out.

So I was kind of waiting for the singleplayer campaign mode. I could see the potential in SRB2K. "The Mugen of Kart Racers" has been an idea in the back of my head for literal decades at this point. But I did not care about time trials because there were no items.

I streamed about four hours of Ring Racers (obviously) a couple days ago:

And I've also seen a lot of SRB2 Kart diehards lose their mind over some of the changes and problems in Ring Racers.

As someone who has never really put more than, say, two hours in to SRB2 Kart, Ring Racers is... fun? Yeah. It's fun. I'd say I enjoyed myself.

But it's also got problems. Broadly speaking, the entire game is way too complicated for its own good. It's nice that they really sat down and thought very deeply about kart racer mechanics and tried to elevate things to a new level, but it feels like they overthought a lot of it. And I mean beyond the fact this game opens with a very wordy, 30-60 minute tutorial. Don't get me wrong, it needs at least some of that, because it's a very mechanically dense game, but that's also sort of the problem.

Like I literally just bailed out of a Discord conversation about this because I wanted to write it over here, but let's take, for example, the spindash.

The spindash mechanic has three primary functions in Ring Racers:

You charge up a spindash at the right time during the starting line lobby segment to get a boost going into the first lap
You charge a spindash to get through one of the speed barriers for secret shortcuts
This game has Sonic-style physics and there are slopes where, if you aren't already going fast, they are too steep of an incline to drive up. So you have to stop and charge a spindash to clear them.

What value does this actually bring to the table? What's useful about it?

The starting line lobby segment is annoying because even CPU racers will bump you into a FAULT state, forcing you to start in last place. Lobby segments are also different sizes, different lengths, so as a newbie like myself, that already puts me at a disadvantage. Charging a spindash for a starting line boost does not add anything you could not already do with Mario Kart's more traditional starting line mechanic. So that means everything around it is just to make the game less friendly to newbies.
Unless you are an ultra-skilled sickos player who optimizes ring consumption to the max, or you're lucky enough to have a boost item, you are never going to be setup to crash through a speed barrier. I certainly never am. I only touch them by accident and they always make everything worse for me when I do. I would never stop and deliberately use a spindash to clear one of these, and places in the map where I get owned are never near one for it to act as a shortcut to get me back in the race faster.
The only time you need to use a spindash on a slope is if you get blasted by someone else's weapon, and there's always this deep dread to that where it's like, if I have to spindash to get up a slope, the race is already lost. Getting slammed by a weapon can already be very devastating on its own, but adding the extra step of having to come to a complete stop, wait 2-3 seconds to charge a spindash, and then crawl up the incline? It's insult to injury.

So, then, in practical terms: what value does the spindash bring to this game? The shortest summary is it's a recovery mechanic that adds an extra step to systems that are tuned to be very difficult and maybe don't even need to exist. You could remove the spindash (and all the systems that depend on the spindash) and I think it would be a better game.

And there's a few systems like this in the game, like the ring tether system, the air drop, and so on. It's nice to finally see someone trying to meaningfully evolve the kart racer into something with greater depth, but I also feel like people who liked SRB2 Kart liked it because it was a very good one of those. And it had extremely friendly mod support.

I get the desire for what's happening here. People were unfairly harsh about how "SRB2 Kart is a bad name" and the developers wanted to both establish a fresher identity and push things in a new direction. But they're also kind of reinventing a lot of wheels and adding all of these extra steps, which will and is hurting the pick-up-and-play element of "it's just a good kart racer." If you roll up on a friend group with Ring Racers and say "hold up, you gotta play the 40 minute tutorial first", that's a killer, and that's still considering they've already trimmed the tutorial length once since it launched only a few days ago.

A kart racer with the depth of a fighting game is definitely an interesting idea and like I said, I was having fun in the stream, but it's just one of those things where the more I think about what the ideal form of this game is trying to be, the more I wonder.

And that's not even considering that some things that worried me about SRB2 Kart are still here, like how many very narrow and winding tracks there are. Sometimes you get what is effectively a rally racing track but there's 8 other hyper-aggressive cars on the road with you and they're all armed to the teeth with projectile weapons. Even in SRB2 Kart's time trial mode, when I was the only one on the track, it could be hard enough to stay on the road. Now that I'm being knocked around by other racers at the same time? It can borderline on feeling impossible.

Again, I don't hate this. It's just that there's a lot of weird friction in places I feel like it does not benefit from or need.

I think the very first crush I ever had on anything or anyone was Ariel, the Little Mermaid. That movie was 1989, so I was like, six years old? Maybe seven?

The only other one was almost ten years later -- I've talked about my first exposure to anime being both Sailor Moon (weekday mornings) and Dragon Ball (Sunday mornings). Sailor Moon definitely came first, and at the age of around 14 years old, I ended up developing a crush on her. As in, Sailor Moon herself.

It was bad enough that the first internet girlfriend I ever had actually had, as I recall, "Bunny" as her username, after Sailor Moon. We even met in a Sailor Moon chat room on AOL!

It feels like a pretty basic pick nowadays but hey, I was 14, and the heart wants what the heart wants.

Thoughts on the first three episodes of “Knuckles”

I have watched the first three episodes of Knuckles tonight, and I think I am trending on the side of “this show is bad.”

Wade Whipple, deputy sheriff, was tolerable in small doses. But only tolerable. When you describe his character out loud, he makes sense, but the performance is very mild. The pratfalls aren’t wacky enough, and Wade himself isn’t dumb enough for it to feel outrageous. He’s plain tap water: it’ll get the job done, but it won’t tickle your senses all that much.

So they gave this guy a show. And they paired him with a cartoon character who only plays one note, constantly, at maximum volume, all the time.

They have no chemistry. That’s supposed to be “the joke,” but for them to become friends you need to see a spark of something there. Most of the humans in this show can’t even make eye contact with Knuckles. They look in a general direction he might be, but they rarely actually look directly at him.

In fact, going back through the first three episodes to snap the worst examples, there are a lot of scenes where they straight up avoid having characters maintain an eyeline with Knuckles. They focus way more on shot-reverse-shot close-ups so everyone can just look slightly off camera and have it not matter.

The show picked up a little bit in the third episode, where we get to see a bit of Wade’s family, but even then, it wasn’t, like… great. It was more that I could see what they were going for. It just doesn’t mean they got there, you know? The whole episode happens to be much too convenient and doesn’t really make good on the stakes it establishes. Everyone just kind of shrugs and says “Eh, good enough.”

And then there’s just how fast and loose they are with the story. I suppose if I’m wrong somebody will call me out, but I think this series is the first time they’ve mentioned Knuckles is the last of his kind and that the rest of the Echidnas were hunted and killed by Owls like Longclaw.

This is also our first real introduction to GUN, and though I think they’re supposed to be a secret government agency, it’s not really clear what they are outside of being super evil now for some reason. They’re like if the Men In Black were arms dealers that traded alien weapons with other murderers and criminals, I guess. It’s weird, and the two agents we get to see never feel cool or threatening. They’re just there to tie a thread to the upcoming Sonic 3 movie so we can go “oh dang GUN has access to their own warp rings?”

And despite all of this constant trouble nobody ever stops and asks, “Hey maybe we should go tell Sonic and Tails about this.” Secret government super agents, people with ties to Robotnik, mercenary hitmen… but nothing stops the road trip to Reno for the bowling tournament, I guess.

I still have the second half of the series to go, so I’ll reserve final judgment, but the short of it is this is shaping up to be something nobody asked for.

You're asking me to speculate on something I'm not super familiar with, and a cursory glance doesn't tell me anything valuable. I guess Bioman was important because it was a major shift in how sentai stories were told, adding more women and more drama to storylines?

I don't know how much that would translate over to the American series. Power Rangers was largely for kids, especially back when it first launched, and I guess the small clip of Saban's Bioman adaptation pitch we have shows characters that are much more adults than teenagers.

I think it's pretty key to the success of Power Rangers that the show was pitched as a group of kids that were still in school. There's still some mismatch, given I was probably 11 or 12 years old when Power Rangers first got really big, and the cast was pitched as a group of 16-18 year olds, but I think it connected a lot better than if we'd had a bunch of fully grown adults that, were, like... aerobics instructors and novelists.

There's that sense that these are people still finding their way. They haven't decided a career path, they don't know what they're going to be when they grow up, and they get chosen to become planet-saving super heroes.

I think that's an important ingredient and things like that are what elevated Power Rangers to the point where it took over the world in the 90's, no matter how pivotal Bioman was in its era.

Honestly still kind of buzzing about what a good stream it was. I’ve been kind of down about streaming because my growth feels so slow, but tonight felt pretty special. Raids and gift subs and all kinds of fun. I should probably stream more often than once a month. My growth probably wouldn’t feel so slow then.

Kind of a wild night overall considering the stuff that happened in Fortnite.

Not much, no. I've seen some episodes, but my prime TV watchin' ages were when I was young enough to sit and watch whatever my Mom was watching.

So I saw a lot of Cheers. Friends. Seinfeld. Frasier. The Nanny. Rosanne. Murphy Brown. 3rd Rock from the Sun. Home Improvement. Mad About You. Drew Carey...

Sorry. Was going down a list of "the best 90's sitcoms" and ended up typing out whatever grabbed a memory. There's more, but you get the point.

She also loved shows like the X-Files, and its lesser known spiritual spinoff, Millennium (with Lance Hendrikson). Sometimes I'd beg her and get lucky enough for us to watch something like Family Matters or the odd episode of The Simpsons.

Futurama's hayday was when I was willing to spend more time with video games or more often on the internet talking to my friends. That was the era of dial-up internet still, and my Mom loved to call her sister up on the phone and chat -- but she'd hang up to focus on TV. So while she had her TV time, the phone line was open for me to go online.

By the time Futurama entered syndication, I didn't really have access to a TV, and I especially didn't have cable on any screen where I could see Futurama about the time it got added to Adult Swim.

I've seen a few episodes, but I can probably count them on one hand.

Skimming an episode guide: I've seen the pilot, Robot Hell, the Slurm factory episode, the Snu Snu episode, the video games episode, and the episode where they (first?) visit Leela's parents in the sewer.

Oh, and the episode where Leela basically gets reduced to reprising her role as Peg Bundy.

And that's it. And most of those I saw going on 15 or 20 years ago.

I don't do much long form reading. It's hard for me to focus on something over the long term like that. Even audio books are hard for me to consume, because they're often 7-10+ hours, and I get frustrated when a Youtube video exceeds more than a couple hours.

Like, at some point, I kind of want to re-read Jurassic Park again! The last time I read it was in high school. And as it turns out, a lot of out-of-print audio books are available on Youtube, including Jurassic Park. Last time I tried, I made it through the prologue and never went on to listen to the rest of the book. I think the tab stayed open for over a year because I swore that if I left the tab open, that meant it would force me to deal with it.

And it did. I eventually just closed the tab.

Even long video games with lots of text! I've been working my way through Mother 3 for the better part of almost three years now. Still not done. And it took me, what, four years to finish Final Fantasy VII Remake?

It's hard to get me to sit down and focus on something long form and have it stick to where I keep coming back to it. Once a higher priority responsibility pushes it out of my personal spotlight, it's gone.
