Scouting was the best thing I could have done with my son, and now I walk the trail with my daughter. Scout me in!”

For more than five decades, the Boy Scouts of America has been welcoming young women into its Venturing, Exploring, Sea Scouts and STEM Scouts programs. And today, the BSA is further expanding that legacy by welcoming young women into Scouts BSA.

“I could not be more excited for what this means for the next generation of leaders in our nation,” said Michael B. Surbaugh, Chief Scout Executive. “Through Scouts BSA, more young people than ever before – young women and men – will get to experience the benefits of camaraderie, confidence, resilience, trustworthiness, courage and kindness through a time-tested program that has been proven to build character and leadership.”

By welcoming boys and girls into these iconic Scouting programs, the Boy Scouts of America is responding to the requests of families who, for years, have sought these opportunities for every member of their family.

“As a parent with both sons and daughters, I have seen firsthand the unique experiences available to our sons in the BSA and have been asking the BSA to create an option for our daughters every year for the last decade,” noted Alex J Sobtzak Sr. of Spring Hill, Florida. “I am so excited that my daughters will have the same opportunities as my sons.”

For many young women, the opportunity to join Scouts BSA comes after years of attending Scouting events with their families. “I have been an honorary Scout since I was two when I’d hang out with my older brother. I was never able to earn the badges, but I was always there,” said Rachel P from Sandpoint, Idaho. “Now I get to do all of that on my own.”

Through participation in all-girl troops, young women that join Scouts BSA will learn from the same program, earn the same merit badges and achieve the same advancements that boys have earned for nearly 109 years in the Boy Scout program.

“I’ve been saying for years that everything we teach boys applies equally to girls. Now, girls can have the same fun, adventure and personal growth that boys have been having,” explained Mike Harlan of Louisville, Kentucky. “We are training the future leaders of our communities and nation, and those future leaders will be women and men. Helping them learn and grow through Scouting is the best investment I can make in the future of my community, our country and society.”

For more than 100 years, the pinnacle of the Scouting experience for some has been achieving the highest rank of Eagle Scout. Starting today, young women can begin the journey toward that goal, and the BSA will ensure that all new Scouts BSA members have a fair opportunity to earn the prestigious Eagle Scout rank. The BSA will celebrate our inaugural class of female Eagle Scouts in 2020.

“Scouting has been a big part of my family for many generations,” said Bryan Blair of Richland, Washington. “Scouting isn’t just something I do; it is a fundamental part of who I am. I am an Eagle Scout and always will be. But more importantly, I am a husband and father to wonderful daughters who deserve all I have to give them. My daughters now have every opportunity I had.”

To learn more or join, visit www.Scouting.org/ScoutsBSA.

About the Boy Scouts of America

The Boy Scouts of America provides the nation’s foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training, which helps young people be “Prepared. For Life.®” The Scouting organization is composed of nearly 2.2 million youth members between the ages of 5 and 21 and approximately 960,000 volunteers in local councils throughout the United States and its territories. Today, the program released the findings of its Career Interest Survey, offering insight into the aspirations of the future workforce. This year revealed several year-over-year changes – STEM professions moved up, claiming the top three careers youth are most interested in, and entertainment careers dropped from the top 10 list completely.

The survey, which helps Exploring develop real-life job experiences that combine student interests with in-demand career opportunities, was fielded in 2017 to more than 32,000 students from 8th through 12th grades. More than 200 career options were offered to enable a broad view of student interests – and an indicator as to where talent gaps may appear in the years ahead.

The top 10 list of most popular careers got quite a shakeup in 2017. Overall, interest in STEM-related professions, including health-care careers, jumped to 52 percent in 2017, versus 45 percent in 2016, with interest shifting away from pop-culture careers. For instance, physician and computer programmer replaced professional athlete and artist for the second- and third-place positions. Singer, actor, photographer, and athletic trainer completely dropped from the top 10 list, making room for the newcomers: computer programmer, mechanical engineer, teacher, attorney, and computer engineer

The top 10 most popular careers from the 2017 survey were:

Registered Nurse (ranked #1 in 2016)

Physician/Surgeon (ranked #6 in 2016)

Computer Programmer (new to the top 10 list)

Veterinarian (ranked #8 in 2016)

Professional Athlete (ranked #2 in 2016)

Mechanical Engineer (new to the top 10 list)

Teacher (new to the top 10 list)

Artist (ranked #3 in 2016)

Attorney (new to the top 10 list)

Computer Engineer (new to the top 10 list)

“It’s encouraging to see a positive shift in interest toward STEM careers in just one year given concerns surrounding the shortage of STEM talent across a variety of industries,” said Chief Scout Executive Michael Surbaugh. “Through Exploring, we introduce youth to real-world STEM career experiences so the jobs of the future are familiar and within reach as they are making decisions about their educational and career paths.”

Whether it’s learning alongside doctors in the medical field, or using open source code to create 3D-printed prosthetic limbs for people in need, students are in an optimal position to benefit from hands-on STEM field experiences. These young people can immediately take what they’re learning in school and put it to use in real-world settings in a meaningful way. Through this kind of experiential education, young men and women are better able to see themselves in the full spectrum of STEM careers available to them.

“At GE, we know that the future STEM workforce is critical to innovations yet to be discovered, so we take seriously our role in helping young people spark an interest in pursuing a STEM career,” said John McDonald, Smart Grid Business Development Leader at GE Power’s Grid Solutions business and Exploring leader. “That’s why we partnered with Exploring – to give students real-world opportunities and experiences that open them up to a world of exciting and fulfilling careers.”

Interest Lags in Other High-Growth Fields

Both men and women showed a lag in interest toward other high-growth career fields, including lesser-known STEM positions such as statistician, software developer, mathematician and information security analyst; and fields related to renewable energy, like solar photovoltaic installers and wind turbine service technicians.

“These results will help us focus Exploring’s efforts in the years ahead to help students learn about high-demand careers they perhaps were unaware of or uncertain about,” said Diane Thornton, National Director of Exploring. “They also provide an indicator to industries as to where they can focus education and recruiting initiatives. By collaborating our efforts, we can help students discover paths to high-potential careers, while at the same time working to avoid potential labor shortages in areas critical to our nation’s growth.”

About the Exploring Program

The Exploring program is available to youth through Learning for Life, an affiliate of the Boy Scouts of America that provides character, leadership and career education programs through sponsoring agencies or groups. Through team work, experiments, and exciting topics, the STEM Scouts program is helping these young geniuses develop character, leadership, and academic strengths they’ll use long after their school days are behind them.

Teacher and STEM Scouts lab leader Diana Robles knows the importance of a curriculum that teaches kids in a way that’s both fun and relevant to modern science, and with the help of the STEM Scouts program, she’s filling that need for her students. In a recent interview with FiOS1 News, she explained how this updated approach to learning augments her teaching and helps her students.

“As we know, we live in a very technology-driven world, so we need to make sure that we are adapting our teaching methods to meet the needs of the changes that are going on around us so that we can really prepare these kids for the future.”

The STEM Scouts program, which is offered to boys and girls from elementary to high school, teaches science, technology, engineering, and math in a fun and engaging way though learning modules. As pictured in the video below, the “What’s the Matter?” module teaches students about the states of matter though discussions and fun experiments with solids, liquids, and gasses, and how they can change.

According to Robles, the benefits of the STEM Scouts curriculum don’t end in academia. Through hands-on activities, STEM Scouts have an opportunity to build skills like teamwork, communication, and critical thinking.

Fifth grade STEM Scout Archie M., who wants to be a scientist one day himself, explained to FiOS1 News, “It helps me talk to my friends easier because we work as a group now and it helps me in science class.”

See for yourself how STEM Scouts is providing kids with exciting learning experiences in the video below from FiOS1 News, and the full article here.

For more information on the STEM Scouts program, and to find a lab near you, visit STEMScouts.org.

The post How STEM Scouts Creates a Learning Culture Beyond the Classroom appeared first on Scouting Newsroom.
Scouts Respond Quickly to Motorcycle Crash Victims https://www.scoutingnewsroom.org/blog/scouts-respond-quickly-motorcycle-crash-victims/ Scouting Newsroom urn:uuid:dda7b7f1-d17c-1738-3c8a-561c3fde52c2 Mon, 16 Jul 2018 13:59:50 -0400
First aid and emergency preparedness are essential lessons every Scout learns. You hope for safe conditions, but when the skills are needed, they can mean the difference between life and death. Such was the case for Scouts from the Pathway to Adventure Council‘s Troop 93 of Lake Zurich, IL when they helped save two motorcycle riders near their hiking site.

On June 27, the Scouts were hiking the Sunday Gulch Trail in South Dakota when they heard a motorcycle slide off the road nearby. Five of the Scouts – Jacob, Seanan, Liam, Matthew, Mark – and Scoutmaster Burke immediately ran to the scene to help the two victims that were trapped under the motorcycle.

The fast-acting Scouts lifted the Harley-Davidson off the unconscious riders and stayed on the scene to provide first responder assistance and divert traffic. They called 911 using their two-way radios and ran up the road to call for additional help.

The Scouts found a fellow hiker who happened to be a trauma nurse and was able to assist before paramedics and other emergency responders arrived.

ABC 7 Chicago reports that both victims regained consciousness before being loaded in the ambulance.

Medicine Mountain Scout Ranch officials say the troop credits Scouting and their first aid training for knowing how to respond quickly and calmly in an emergency situation.

To get the full story on how these brave Scouts helped two strangers in need, visit ABC 7 Chicago.

The post Scouts Respond Quickly to Motorcycle Crash Victims appeared first on Scouting Newsroom.
Life Scout Saves Teen Sailor After Boat Capsizes https://www.scoutingnewsroom.org/blog/life-scout-saves-teen-sailor-boat-capsizes/ Scouting Newsroom urn:uuid:bc72ef81-27d4-06c4-a720-dd3e50e5eb3d Fri, 13 Jul 2018 15:15:54 -0400
When faced with a life-threatening emergency, preparation may make all the difference. (Photo credit: Danielle Beaty)

When faced with a life-threatening emergency, preparation may make all the difference. Being prepared for these situations makes it possible to act carefully, swiftly and as calmly as possible. Which is exactly what 15-year-old Life Scout Ian B. of the Tidewater Council did when he noticed a capsized boat on the Pasquotank River on September 15, 2017.

Ian was participating in a sailing program at the Northeast Academy for Aerospace and Advanced Technologies when the weather quickly became overcast and windy. The weather became so dangerous that Ian and his classmates brought the boat to shore.

Soon after docking, a capsized boat caught his eye in the distance with no visible sailor present. The sailing instructor was nearly 45 minutes away, so Ian knew he had to act fast. He dove into the water and swam 150 yards to the scene.

The Scout found 14-year-old Saige M. alongside the boat in distress with an improperly fastened life jacket. Ian correctly fastened the jacket, quickly making the struggling teen more comfortable. He then instructed Saige to float on her back while he grabbed the bow line of the boat and back strap of her jacket to tow both to shore.

The brave Life Scout was awarded the Honor Medal for his incredible lifesaving feat. Yet, to Ian, saving the struggling teen was second nature.

Simply put: “It is what a Scout does when he sees someone in trouble,” he said.

To read the full story of this Scout’s heroic efforts, visit The Outer Banks Voice.

The post Life Scout Saves Teen Sailor After Boat Capsizes appeared first on Scouting Newsroom.
Philmont Scout Ranch Announces Backcountry Closure for 2018 Summer Season https://www.scoutingnewsroom.org/blog/philmont-scout-ranch-announces-backcountry-closure-2018-summer-season/ Scouting Newsroom urn:uuid:ed3bb792-01f9-5f4e-62f2-e770bbb44129 Thu, 05 Jul 2018 10:49:55 -0400
The safety of our youth participants, volunteers and staff is the priority at Philmont Scout Ranch and for the Boy Scouts of America. Because of the unprecedented risk of fire...

The post Philmont Scout Ranch Announces Backcountry Closure for 2018 Summer Season appeared first on Scouting Newsroom.

The safety of our youth participants, volunteers and staff is the priority at Philmont Scout Ranch and for the Boy Scouts of America. Because of the unprecedented risk of fire and the risk this poses to the safety of those in available trek areas, we have made the difficult decision that the Philmont Scout Ranch backcountry will remain closed for treks and individual programs for the remainder of the 2018 summer season. This closure applies only to Philmont’s backcountry programs. All other areas and programs at the Philmont Scout Ranch, including the Philmont Training Center, will remain open all summer.

Unfortunately, the extremely dry conditions at Philmont have continued unabated since June with fire danger in northern New Mexico currently classified as “extreme.” The fire danger has led to closure of most public lands near Philmont Scout Ranch. State and federal lands surrounding the Ranch have remained closed or have since been closed to public access due to the fire danger, including large areas that were closed in the last week.

We have been monitoring the situation since the Ute Park fire began earlier this summer. A few days ago, the Morris Creek fire was discovered in the southern portion of the Ranch. This was part of the area being considered for alternative trek routes that had to be re-routed due the damage sustained in the Ute Park Fire, which forced the cancellation of the first part of the season. Because of the Morris Creek fire, these alternate trek routes have now been eliminated. Additionally, two new fires have been reported in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado that highlight the continued high fire danger in the area, which is currently experiencing exceptional drought – the most severe classification associated with water shortages.

Over the next few days, our staff will be contacting the lead advisor or contingent leader of affected crews confirming the refund, offering a trek at Philmont for the 2020 season, and answering any questions. Please wait and allow the Philmont team to contact your crew – your assistance will help make sure that Philmont phone lines remain open.

The Philmont ranger motto is “scramble – be flexible,” and our inspiring staff is living up to that spirit. Although they expected to be delivering backcountry adventures to Scouts and Scouters this summer, they have enthusiastically taken on the difficult work that needs to be done, ensuring that we will be ready to fully re-open next year. We are humbled and thankful for their willingness to roll up their sleeves, pitch in and meet the challenges we have faced; truly, they reflect the very best on Scouting and our nation’s youth.

As difficult as this situation has been for our Philmont family and for Scouts across our country, we have been truly inspired by the incredible perseverance and commitment shown by our staff, the resourcefulness displayed by displaced crews to find other summer adventures, and the understanding and good wishes from thousands of Scouts and Scouters from around the world.

We thank you for your continued understanding, your support, and your cooperation.

FAQ

Q: Does this mean that Philmont Scout Ranch will be closed this summer?

No, this closure applies only to Philmont’s backcountry programs. Philmont’s Camping Headquarters and Base Camp area, the Philmont Training Center, the new National Scouting Museum, the Chase Ranch, and the Kit Carson Museum at Rayado will remain open all summer. Training courses at the Philmont Training Center and the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE) will proceed as scheduled. This decision does not affect Philmont’s fall programs, including Autumn Adventure and fall PTC training conferences.

Q: Which programs are affected by the closure?

The following programs scheduled for this summer are cancelled: 7- and 12-day treks; and individual backcountry programs, including Rayado, ROCS, Trail Crew, STEM and Ranch Hands.

Q: Will refunds be issued to the affected crews?

Yes, refund checks for all affected crews will be sent to the lead contact advisor on Monday, July 9, 2018.

Q: Will affected crews be offered high adventure opportunities elsewhere?

We will encourage crews to attend programs that still have capacity. While Sea Base is at capacity right now, the Summit Bechtel Reserve is ready to help deliver a great adventure program this summer, and there is limited space still available at Northern Tier, too. Crew advisors and councils can call SBR directly at 304-465-2800 or Northern Tier directly at 218-365-4811.

Q: What will happen if our crew already paid for airfare?

Our National BSA leadership has been working with airlines to assist crews with refunds, changes, and credits. Please refer to the following contacts for support.

American Airlines 1-800-221-2255

Southwest Airlines 1-800-435-9792

Alaska Airlines 1-800-654-5669

Amtrak 1-800-872-7245

Q: What is the financial impact of this closure?

Although we know there will be a significant impact, it is difficult for us to assess the entire financial impact at this moment. Even so, we know that this is the right decision because the safety of our youth participants, volunteers and staff is our priority.

Q: What will be the impact to the seasonal staff?

Philmont seasonal staff will be given the opportunity to stay and continue to work on projects at Philmont, but they can also choose to go home if they prefer.

The post Philmont Scout Ranch Announces Backcountry Closure for 2018 Summer Season appeared first on Scouting Newsroom.
Spokane Father Looking to Form First Area Unit for Girls https://www.scoutingnewsroom.org/blog/spokane-father-looking-form-first-area-unit-girls/ Scouting Newsroom urn:uuid:abac2180-063a-d96d-c06b-7f43e78a8dd8 Thu, 28 Jun 2018 11:30:08 -0400
Kevin Hall’s kids love to camp, tie knots, and spend time outdoors. Let me start talking to people and see about getting this started.” To get the ball rolling he organized a meeting for interested parents and their daughters in March, and he is now exploring the possibilities of starting a new girls-only unit.

According to the KREM article, Samya was “overjoyed” when she found out she could join Boy Scouts.

“You know, there are leaders being built, and it’s great to see that the leaders of our country in the future are coming up with the morals and principles of the Scout Oath and Law,” he said.

Read the full story (including a video clip featuring Kevin Hall) on 7KTVB.com. The Philmont Training Center expects to welcome back participants beginning with Philmont Family Adventure on June 24, 2018.

The NAYLE program, which takes place at Rayado Ridge Leadership Camp seven miles south of the Philmont Base Camp and is unaffected by the Ute Park Fire, will go on as scheduled.

Over the next few days, we will be contacting the lead advisor or contingent leader of all crews that are impacted by this decision, starting with those that are scheduled to arrive first, as well as affected PTC coordinators. Thank you in advance for allowing the Philmont team to contact your crew – your assistance will help make sure that Philmont phone lines remain open.

We will continue to work with local, state and federal authorities to continuously evaluate the fire and air quality to ensure that we can safely deliver outstanding program.

Thank you for your support and patience.

The post Ute Park Fire Prompts Philmont Program Announcements appeared first on Scouting Newsroom.
Ute Park Fire Impacting Philmont Scout Ranch https://www.scoutingnewsroom.org/blog/ute-park-fire-impacting-philmont-scout-ranch/ Scouting Newsroom urn:uuid:5a087862-979a-9699-3e43-98baba7d80d9 Sun, 03 Jun 2018 18:00:14 -0400
The Boy Scouts of America has confirmed that the Ute Park fire in New Mexico is affecting the Philmont Scout Ranch. Thankfully, youth members have not yet arrived at Philmont for the summer so there are no youth participants on-site.

Our Philmont staff are now back on the unaffected areas of the Ranch with the clearance of the authorities overseeing the situation after having been previously evacuated. All are safe and in good spirits. Additionally, livestock have also been moved to unaffected areas of the Ranch and are safe.

Currently, there are numerous resources from local, state and federal partners working to suppress this fire on the ground with support from multiple aerial firefighters. Additional incident management resources have also arrived to reinforce operations.

Damage assessments are difficult to assess currently, so we don’t know the total toll the fire has taken on structures and facilities.

We are thankful that no staff have been harmed, and for the outpouring of support from the community in response to this incident. Our thoughts are focused on the wellbeing of those responding to contain the Ute Park fire. We are grateful for their continued efforts.

For more information on the fire, please visit: https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5820/

The post Ute Park Fire Impacting Philmont Scout Ranch appeared first on Scouting Newsroom.
Unique Eagle Scout Project Creates Better Home for Animals at the Zoo https://www.scoutingnewsroom.org/blog/unique-eagle-scout-project-creates-better-home-animals-zoo/ Scouting Newsroom urn:uuid:e0ef37d6-63ba-67e8-4baf-b39b099f9812 Thu, 31 May 2018 16:28:47 -0400
A young man with a passion for helping animals came up with a novel idea to make living conditions for animals at the Albuquerque Biopark Zoo more comfortable. And while the reverence and respect are the same as years past, what’s different this time around is that the Cub Scout boys are joined by Cub Scout girls.

“It is amazing, and being able to do it now with both of them as Cub Scouts is even more awesome,” said Jenny, the mother of a Cub Scout son and daughter. “It’s the one thing we look forward to every single year. But some opportunities in Scouting take reaching new heights to a literal extent, like the Scouts from the Chief Seattle Council who launched a high-altitude balloon project more than 100,000 feet up.

“My favorite part was chasing the balloon. The overall running after it, trying to figure out where it went,” said Max R., a member of Scout Troop 544 and seventh-grader, to The Outlook.

Thanks to the idea from their Scoutmaster, Phil Foss, the troop learned about the importance of STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math) while constructing a project that would send a helium-filled balloon into the stratosphere.

“We started the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program for the troop. We wanted something really interesting for them. We have to compete with screens now. And this project goes back to traditional Scouting values,” Foss said.

Though Foss introduced the idea, he says the Scouts brought the project to life. The project also allowed the Scouts to earn up to nine merit badges in the process.

“They brainstormed different packaging, a bucket, a wooden frame and finally decided on a styrofoam cooler,” Foss said. “They also needed to plan a ‘power budget.’ They needed a battery that was not too heavy, but would also power the equipment the length of the flight.”

The Scouts were also conscientious about safety throughout the entire process. They had to design the apparatus and meet safety requirements of the Federal Aviation Administration.

Both the kids and adults were excited by the project, with special interest in the photographs the balloon was able to capture. One photo even showed an aircraft soaring below the balloon.

“The pictures were really cool,” Max R. said. “The pictures where we could see the curvature of the earth were epic.”

To learn more about this out of this world Scout project, read the full story on The Outlook.

The post How These Scouts Launched a Balloon Into the Stratosphere appeared first on Scouting Newsroom.
Statement on BSA-LDS Relationship https://www.scoutingnewsroom.org/blog/statement-bsa-lds-relationship/ Scouting Newsroom urn:uuid:d152c225-1f87-1934-a525-59301246d5ca Tue, 08 May 2018 21:21:52 -0400
The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) deeply appreciates the long-standing relationship we’ve had with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a chartered organization. While Scouting remains a beloved program for many LDS families, the Church has decided to pursue programming that helps it meet the needs of their increasingly global membership and will no longer charter units after December 31, 2019. We jointly express our gratitude to the thousands of Scout leaders who have selflessly served over the years in Church-sponsored Scouting units and wish the Church all the best as it prepares to introduce the new program in 2020.

There are many religiously-affiliated programs that are offered alongside Scouting, and as such, we are confident that many LDS Scouting families will go on to enjoy Scouting for years to come – continuing the legacy of LDS youth who have become Eagle Scouts and community leaders. For LDS families who want to continue the tradition of Scouting beyond 2019, the BSA will ensure a smooth transition to community-sponsored units that will welcome youth previously served by LDS-sponsored units.

At the same time, the Boy Scouts of America is excited about our future and the opportunity to grow by providing families more options for their children to benefit from the incredible character-building experiences we provide.

Click here to read a joint statement from the BSA and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

The post Statement on BSA-LDS Relationship appeared first on Scouting Newsroom.
The BSA Launches Historic ‘Scout Me In’ Campaign Inviting Girls and Boys to Experience Adventures Through a Cub Scout’s Point of View https://www.scoutingnewsroom.org/press-releases/scout-me-in/ Scouting Newsroom urn:uuid:0975f9e0-dd10-d18b-015c-73b96b41ce9d Wed, 02 May 2018 09:02:06 -0400
‘Scouts BSA’ Also Unveiled as the Name of the Program for Older Boys and Girls to Ensure All Youth Are Welcome and Can See Themselves in Scouting Irving, Texas –...

The post The BSA Launches Historic ‘Scout Me In’ Campaign Inviting Girls and Boys to Experience Adventures Through a Cub Scout’s Point of View appeared first on Scouting Newsroom.

‘Scouts BSA’ Also Unveiled as the Name of the Program for Older Boys and Girls to Ensure All Youth Are Welcome and Can See Themselves in Scouting

Irving, Texas – May 2, 2018 – The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) made history today by unveiling the new Scout Me In campaign that features girls, as well as boys, in its iconic Cub Scout program for the first time. Starting this summer, all kids are invited to say, “Scout Me In,” as they join the fun, adventure and character-building opportunities found in Cub Scouts. The campaign presents an energizing Scouting experience that speaks to kids by putting them in the middle of the action. It also engages parents who are looking for ways to make the most of the time they have with their kids and help them to be Prepared. For Life.

The Scout Me In creative shifts the perspective by showing what it’s like to be a Scout from a kid’s point of view. Instead of simply showing Scouts participating in activities, the campaign brings the young viewer into the middle of the action – from fishing, biking and canoeing to launching rockets and making slime – where they get even closer to the experiences that Scouting brings to life.

“Cub Scouts is a lot of fun, and now it’s available to all kids,” said Stephen Medlicott, National Marketing Group Director of Boy Scouts of America. “That’s why we love ‘Scout Me In’ – because it speaks to girls and boys and tells them, ‘This is for you. We want you to join!’”

The Scout Me In campaign celebrates the BSA’s expansion to serve families and welcome girls and boys into Scouting in communities across the country. It reinforces that the mission and core values in the Scout Oath and Scout Law are welcoming, inclusive and foundational for both young men and women. Since announcing the BSA’s historic decision to welcome girls into Scouting, more than 3,000 girls across the nation have already enrolled in the BSA’s Early Adopter Program and are participating in Cub Scouts ahead of the full launch later this year.

“As we enter a new era for our organization, it is important that all youth can see themselves in Scouting in every way possible. That is why it is important that the name for our Scouting program for older youth remain consistent with the single name approach used for the Cub Scouts,” said Michael Surbaugh, Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America. “Starting in February 2019, the name of the older youth program will be ‘Scouts BSA,’ and the name of our iconic organization will continue to be Boy Scouts of America.”

The new Scout Me In recruitment campaign and creative approach was created by award-winning Dallas agency Johnson & Sekin, who also led efforts in the naming process supporting Scouts BSA. The Cub Scout and Scouts BSA program launch, led by Golin, will encompass a fully integrated strategy that spans paid, owned and earned channels.

“Scouting is deeply woven into the fabric of American life,” said Chris Sekin, Managing Partner of Johnson & Sekin. “It is a privilege to work with the organization to usher in its newest era that now includes all of our country’s youth and families.”

“We are excited to partner with the BSA to expand its impactful programs that are relevant to all families,” said Caroline Dettman, Golin’s Chief Creative and Community Officer. “We are thrilled that the mission and goal of the BSA’s programs to instill character and leadership is now a powerful promise for boys and girls alike.”

About the Boy Scouts of America

The Boy Scouts of America provides the nation’s foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training, which helps young people be “Prepared. For Life.®” The Scouting organization is composed of nearly 2.3 million youth members between the ages of 5 and 21 and approximately 960,000 volunteers in local councils throughout the United States and its territories. So when service is inspired by one’s own family, it’s sure to have an incredible impact on the community.

Scout Lance D., 17, of Longhouse Council recognized the challenges his family faced. To ensure Lance’s brother, who has autism, received the best care, his parents routinely had to travel as far as 70 miles.

It was this dedication to family that inspired Lance’s Eagle project. The determined Scout decided he would help other families experiencing similar challenges by organizing a conference on autism and other developmental disabilities.

“Just seeing my parent’s experience, I don’t want other people to work that hard to get that type of help,” Lance shared with the Citizen.

Lance’s Family Conference for Developmental Disabilities, held earlier this April, provided families with an opportunity to learn from experts — and each other — about caring for loved ones with developmental disabilities.

Anyone who’s dabbled in event planning knows it’s certainly not easy. However, in true Scouting spirit, Lance went above and beyond to make sure the event catered to the needs of both caretakers and people with disabilities. In addition to the panel of experts, the conference also featured fun and engaging activities, such as therapy dogs, teddy bears, and more.

Of course, there’s always plenty of the Scouting spirit to go around. Scouts from Lance’s troop joined the initiative by volunteering at the conference, while citizens from all corners of the community — from young people to adults — found a way to help.

Planning this conference would have been quite an undertaking for anyone, let alone a high school student, but Scoutmaster Andy Roden had no doubt Lance could pull it off.

“He had a vision for this and wasn’t really intimidated by the scope of it,” Roden explained to The Citizen. “But I think that’s really a special thing to see in a young man, to have that vision and follow through on it.”

Lance’s project truly demonstrates what it means to make a meaningful community impact by providing families with new, positive experiences. We can’t wait to see what this incredible Scout does next!

Read more about Lance’s conference and his mission to help his community in the full story from The Citizen.

The post Scout Organizes Family Conference for Developmental Disabilities appeared first on Scouting Newsroom.
