Google’s Agent2Agent protocol finds new home at the Linux Foundation

At the Open Source Summit North America, it was announced that Google donated its Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol to the Linux Foundation.

The A2A protocol offers a standard way for connecting agents to each other. In this way, it complements Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), which provides a way to connect agents to different data sources and applications.

“Drawing on Google’s internal expertise in scaling agentic systems, we designed the A2A protocol to address the challenges we identified in deploying large-scale, multi-agent systems for our customers. A2A empowers developers to build agents capable of connecting with any other agent built using the protocol and offers users the flexibility to combine agents from various providers,” Google wrote in a blog post when it first launched A2A in April.

OpenAI adds Deep Research and Webhooks to the API

The addition of Deep Research will enable developers to build research agents that find, analyze, and synthesize data.

Webhooks were also added, enabling developers to receive notifications for API events like completed responses, fine-tuning jobs, and batch jobs.

Additionally, the company is dropping the price for web search and adding it into more models. It costs $10 / 1k tool calls in o3, o3-pro, and o4 mini, and $25 / 1k tool calls in GPT-4o and GPT-4.1.

Anthropic adds ability to host and share Claude apps in its platform

Now, developers will be able to not only interact with Claude, but also use it to build, host, and share their creations, eliminating the need to worry about hosting it themselves.

Users will authenticate with their own Claude account, and their API usage will count against their subscription instead of the app developer being charged.

Qodo launches CLI agent framework

Qodo, maker of an AI coding platform, today announced the release of Qodo Gen CLI, an agent framework that enables developers to create, customize, and deploy their own AI coding agents.

With the framework, creating agents can be done by writing configuration files that add autonomous AI agents throughout the software development life cycle, according to the company’s announcement.

Qodo was built to help developers add autonomous coding capabilities to their applications without requiring expertise in AI systems, which can lead to solutions that sync up with an organization’s requirements, the company said. With Qodo Gen CLI, developers can define custom agents and what tools they can access, specify actions that trigger the agents, what instructions guide their behavior and ultimately, what their outputs should be.

Warp 2.0 evolves terminal experience into an Agentic Development Environment

Warp is undergoing a significant transformation with its 2.0 launch, shifting from its origins as a terminal emulator with AI integrations into an Agentic Development Environment (ADE).

It consists of four main capabilities: Code, Agents, Terminal, and Drive. Any of those can be initiated from the main interface, which accepts both prompts and terminal commands.

“The products on the market today, from AI IDEs to CLI coding agents, all miss the mark supporting this workflow. They bolt agents onto code editors through chat panels and bury them in CLI apps. What’s needed is a product native to the agentic workflow; one primarily designed for prompting, multi-threading, agent management, and human-agent collaboration across real-world codebases and infrastructure,” Zach Lloyd, the company’s CEO and founder, wrote in a blog post.

Agent Mode for Gemini added to Android Studio

With Agent Mode, a developer can describe a complex goal, then the agent will come up with an execution plan and then complete the tasks.

Examples of tasks Agent Mode can tackle include building a project and fixing errors, extracting hardcoded strings and migrating them to strings.xml, adding support for dark mode to an app, and implementing a new screen in an app from a screenshot.

Developers will have the ability to review, accept, or reject any of the agent’s proposed changes, or ask it to iterate on their feedback. There is also an auto-approve feature that can be enabled for situations when a developer wants to iterate quickly on ideas.

Vercel Agent launches in limited beta

The Vercel Agent is an AI assistant that analyzes Vercel app performance and security data.

It can summarize anomalies, identify likely root causes, and recommend remediation actions across the entire platform, from managing firewall rules to identifying optimization opportunities.

Tricentis Agentic Test Automation

This is a new AI agent that can generate test cases automatically, leveraging text-based prompts as well as prior test runs. It also makes use of Tricentis’ Vision AI technology to interpret visual elements across platforms, and integrates with Tricentis Tosca.

Additionally, the company launched a remote MCP server and a beta for its AI workflows capability that enables better communication between agents and humans.

tRPC vs GraphQL vs REST: Choosing the right API design for modern web applications

APIs underpin most modern software systems. Whether you’re building a SaaS dashboard, a mobile app, or coordinating microservices, how you expose your data shapes your velocity, flexibility, and technical debt.

Through several years of building production systems with React and TypeScript, I’ve shipped REST, GraphQL, and tRPC APIs. Each option presents distinct strengths, with real-world tradeoffs developers and engineering leaders should understand. This guide compares these technologies from a practical engineering perspective, focusing on architecture, type safety, toolchains, and developer experience.

API Approaches Explained

REST: The Web Standard

REST (Representational State Transfer) organizes APIs around resources, linked to URL endpoints (e.g., /users/42). Clients interact using standard HTTP methods (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE). It’s simple, widely supported, and language-agnostic.

GraphQL: Flexible Queries

GraphQL, developed by Facebook, enables clients to query precisely the data they need via a single endpoint, using a structured query language. This model suits dynamic UIs and data aggregation scenarios, minimizing overfetching and underfetching.

tRPC: Type Safety for TypeScript

tRPC provides end-to-end type safety by exposing backend procedures directly to TypeScript clients, without code generation or manual typings. Troubleshooting Tips and Common Pitfalls

REST

Manage Endpoint Sprawl: Resist the temptation to create many similar endpoints for slight variations of data. Keep your endpoint surface area as small and consistent as possible to ease maintenance.
API Versioning: Implement versioning (e.g., /v1/users) early and consistently. This avoids breaking existing clients as your API evolves. Regularly audit API usage to detect version drift and outdated clients.

GraphQL

Query Complexity: Monitor query execution and set limits on depth and complexity. Deeply nested or unbounded queries can cause unexpected server load and performance bottlenecks. Use query cost analysis tools or plugins.
Restrict Public Queries: Avoid exposing generic “catch-all” queries in public APIs. Limit scope and apply strict access controls to prevent abuse-especially on endpoints that join or aggregate large datasets.

tRPC

Infrastructure Abstraction: Do not expose backend infrastructure, such as database schema or raw table structures, through procedures. Keep your API surface aligned with domain concepts, not database details.
Domain-Focused Procedures: Design your API around business logic rather than CRUD operations at the database level. This keeps the contract stable and abstracts away internal changes from clients.
Internal-Only by Design: tRPC is intended for internal APIs within TypeScript monorepos or full-stack apps. Avoid using tRPC for public APIs or cases involving teams working in multiple languages.

How to Choose

If you’re building an internal, full-stack TypeScript tool (e.g., with Next.js): tRPC delivers unmatched speed and type safety for TypeScript-first teams. Fewer bugs, near-zero manual typings, and instant feedback during refactorings.
If your frontend is complex, data requirements are fluid, or you aggregate multiple backend sources: GraphQL’s flexibility is worth the up-front learning curve.

If you’re exposing a public API, supporting multiple languages, or need long-term backward compatibility: REST is stable, battle-tested, and universally supported.

Jakarta EE 11 Platform launches with modernized Test Compatibility Kit framework

The Eclipse Foundation today announced the release of Jakarta EE 11 Platform, which builds on the releases of the Core Profile in December 2024 and Web Profile in March.

This update adds significant enhancements, including a modernized Test Compatibility Kit (TCK) framework, updates to several specifications, and a new data specification.

According to Tanja Obradovic, senior director of Java Programs for the Eclipse Foundation, TCKs are essential for testifying the quality of any application built based on Jakarta EE.

Part of the modernization includes moving from Apache ANT and Java Test Harness to JUnit 5 and Apache Maven. The structure of the TCKs themselves were also streamlined to reduce complexity so that they are easier to learn and use.

“The work that has been put into TCK is tremendous,” Obradovic said. “First off, we’re going to be able to enhance the pool of contributors and committers in that project because we’re using more modern tools. The second thing that could be a consequence is the fact that we’re reducing the time that is needed for certification, so that means we’re breaking the barriers for any new implementations.”

She said that the team has been able to cut down the time required for certification from tens of hours to just a couple of hours.

Continuing on this modernization theme, this release saw the removal or deprecation of a couple of specifications. Managed Beans has been deprecated and references to the Java SE SecurityManager were removed.

“There is an appetite for further enhancement, and the team is looking into the specifications that are not necessarily being used,” Obradovic said. “What do we do with those? How do we reduce maintenance? Do we need to invest in maintaining those? That theme is going to be carried on in Jakarta EE 12.”

Other specification updates include Java Records support and greater emphasis on Contexts and Dependency Injection (CDI) to enable more consistent application behavior.

Jakarta EE 11 also introduces the Jakarta Data specification, which is designed to simplify data access and improve developer productivity.

Jakarta Data includes a built-in repository supertype for performing operations on entities, CrudRepository to facilitate basic CRUD operations, support for offset and cursor-based pagination, and a new query language.

Jakarta EE 11 supports Java 17 and up, and includes the concurrency enhancements introduced in Java 21, including Virtual Threads.

Qodo launches CLI agent framework

Qodo, maker of an AI coding platform, today announced the release of Qodo Gen CLI, an agent framework that enables developers to create, customize, and deploy their own AI coding agents.

With the framework, creating agents can be done by writing configuration files that add autonomous AI agents throughout the software development life cycle, according to the company’s announcement.

“Every developer should be able to create their own AI agents, just as they create scripts and automation today,” said Itamar Friedman, CEO and co-founder of Qodo. “By making agent creation simple and accessible instead of requiring complex AI engineering, we’re democratizing access to real automation that teams fully control.. Now a developer can create a custom agent for their unique workflow in minutes, not months.”

Along with enabling custom agent creation, Qodo Gen CLI includes pre-built agents for code review, test coverage analysis, and release notes generation. According to the company announcement, “These agents integrate seamlessly with existing development tools through GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, and other CI/CD systems. For advanced use cases, agents can be exposed as Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, enabling integration with other AI tools and platforms.”

Qodo supports OpenAIo3 and Claude Sonnet 4 LLMs, offers on-premises deployment, and a host of reference implementations that is continuing to grow.

Warp 2.0 evolves terminal experience into an Agentic Development Environment

Warp is undergoing a significant transformation with its 2.0 launch, shifting from its origins as a terminal emulator with AI integrations into an Agentic Development Environment (ADE).

Lloyd says that Warp 1.0, aka the terminal, was the foundation for supporting this workflow, because being a terminal allowed it access to proper context for working across projects and tasks. However, where it fell short was its lack of primitives for managing multiple agents, controlling their permissions, and giving them maximum context. It also didn’t have first-class support for coding because it was a terminal first and foremost.

Warp 2.0 fixes all of these issues and now excels at any development task thrown at it. Its early testing showed a time savings of 6-7 hours per week when running multiple agents and a 95% acceptance rate across the 75 million lines of code generated.

It consists of four main capabilities: Code, Agents, Terminal, and Drive. Any of those can be initiated from the main interface, which accepts both prompts and terminal commands.

Code

It can generate code from a prompt, finding relevant files using a variety of tools, including grep, glob, and codebase embeddings. It can code across multiple repositories at once and work on large codebases and files. Warp actually worked on the platform revamp using Warp itself.

“Compared to IDE-coding agents, Warp is a much more natural interface. In a world where developers write less and less code by hand, there’s no reason to spend your day in an interface built for hand-editing code. As workflows fully adjust to accommodate agents, unified agent interfaces that support every part of your development workflow will feel more natural, and you’ll miss seeing code on ¾ of your screen less and less,” Lloyd said.

Agents

Agents in Warp 2.0 are more like intelligent tasks than traditional agents, spanning from fixing bugs, building features, or finding out why a server is crashing. These tasks can be short-lived or can run for hours.

Warp’s agents get context from CLI commands, MCP, Warp Driver, and Codebase Context, and use the best models available. The agents will present developers with a plan before acting, and developers can control how autonomously the agent should act.

Warp 2.0 also includes a management UI that shows the status of all running agents, on top of sending notifications when an agent completes its task or needs help.

Agent permissions are highly customizable, allowing developers to decide if an agent can auto-accept code diffs, read files on a machine without permission, and run commands on their own. Developers can also create an allowlist and denylist of commands that the agent can or can’t run.

For privacy, Warp has a zero-data retention policy in place with its LLM providers, and developers can control what telemetry and crash reporting is sent.

Terminal

The terminal offers a similar experience to coding in an IDE, meaning that developers can use the mouse, get completions and syntax highlighting, and receive predictions of the next command.

It features a command mode and agent mode, and users can easily switch between the two or have Warp detect which one should be used. AI controls include picking a model, continuing a conversation, attaching an image, or referencing a file.

Warp Drive

Finally, Warp Drive is a knowledge store that can be shared across the team and agents. It can be used as a place to centrally configure MCP and rules, and teams can store and share commands, notebooks, env variables, and prompts.

According to the company, Warp Drive is helpful because it standardizes a team’s knowledge, workflows, and conventions so that agents can perform tasks the way a colleague would.

What’s coming next

The company teased some of the features it is planning to add to Warp in the next several months. These include adding the ability to schedule or trigger tasks, improving the file-editing experience, and natively supporting file trees.

“Warp 2.0 is just the beginning of the next chapter of Warp. We remain committed to our existing user-base, many of whom just want a better terminal. We also remain committed to empowering software developers to ship better, faster, and more reliably. We’re building for a future where Warp is the primary—and only—tool developers need to ship software, but there’s work to be done to get us there,” said Lloyd.

Overture Maps launches GERS, a system of unique IDs for global geospatial entities

The Overture Maps Foundation today announced the launch of its Global Entity Reference System (GERS), which assigns a unique ID to geospatial entities, including 2.6 billion buildings, 61 million places, 321 million road segments, and almost 447 million addresses.

The system will allow developers to more easily join datasets, share information, and onboard new data, without the complexity of trying to conflate different sources of data that may have different names for the same geospatial entity.

According to Marc Prioleau, executive director of the Overture Maps Foundation, an explosion in mapping data has led to an increase in expectations as well, such as people wanting real-time traffic conditions on their route or to know what specific lane of a road to be in.

“What that means is now you’re pulling together data not just from a single data supplier, but more like a dozen or 20 suppliers, and you’re trying to conflate all that data to the same thing,” said Prioleau. For instance, one road might have multiple different names, depending on the source you’re getting that data from.

He explained that companies today are saying that as the number of data sources has gone up, the cost to conflate the data is exceeding the cost to actually license the data, often by a multiple or two or three.

“They’re spending more and more resources basically trying to make sure that this data set from here matches that data set from there,” he said. “The effect is you either spend a lot more money building applications where you’re committing more and more of your engineers to this conflation, or you don’t conflate.”

He says this is impacting all sorts of organizations, from those building navigation apps that include lane-level information, speed limits, and traffic congestion to global development organizations trying to assess economic value of buildings in developing countries. They have data coming in from several different places, but no one can agree on what a particular building is because there’s no common identifier for it.

The solution, according to Overture Maps, is to step back and develop a common identifier for every entity on the map.

“We created an identifier for each one of those that uniquely identifies that entity, and we made it global, so it has to work in every country, and we made it open, so it’s not controlled by any one company.”

According to Prioleau, what GERS does is it allows companies to put this unique identifier into their data.

GERS IDs are open, enabling anyone to use it without the risk of vendor lock-in because of restrictive licensing. It is also global, which is in contrast to the region-based ID systems that exist today.

The system is entity-based, referring to locations by building addresses, road segments, or places, rather than on latitude and longitude coordinates. According to Prioleau, this aligns more to how people actually think about places these days.

And finally, GERS enables developers to track changes in data that are tied to IDs, look up and locate entities through a central registry, and use bridge files to link internal data sources with Overture map entities.

“In the scheme of things, I’ve become more and more convinced that GERS is probably our most valuable contribution to the industry,” Prioleau said. “It’s that contribution of stepping back and saying, rather than wringing your hands about this explosion of data, what is a good solution?”

At Broadcom’s recent Spark VSM Summit, the theme was “VSM evolution meets AI revolution.”

After the event, SD Times sat down with Broadcom’s Jean Louis Vignaud, the head of ValueOps at the company, to discuss the AI revolution and its connection to value stream management. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

DR: Everyone is talking about AI. But I’m curious to know how AI can make value stream management better.

JLV: There are two powerful ways AI and VSM intersect. First, AI and VSM workflows, automating repetitive tasks, analyzing risk and progress and helping users create better, more complete artifacts like investment requests or features. And second, VSM provides the structure AI needs to thrive through alignment, visibility and measurable outcomes.

DR: So, people who are implementing AI now with their value stream, what are the most promising use cases that you are seeing from your customers?

JLV: From my perspective, AI is making a real impact across three areas: automation, assessment and augmentation. It’s helping generate user stories and test cases. For instance, forecasting resource needs, aligning investment with strategic goals and flagging compliance risk early, boosting both efficiency and strategic alignment.

DR: Forrester analyst Ted Shadler has said that AI agents aren’t only just software. They kind of live in their own knowledge realm. What do you think about that?

JLV: Absolutely, it’s not just software. AI agents just don’t follow instructions. They operate with contextual awareness, and the well-defined value stream provides that context, enabling agents to act as intelligent teammates, not just tools.

DR: We were talking about when value stream management first came to software development. We at SD Times had certainly spotted this and seen that this seems to be the bridge between the business side and tech side, where there was this big disconnect. They didn’t use the same tools or speak the same language. And it now seems like VSM is the link that’s bringing those both together. So what are the business implications of using AI with VSM?

JLV: Well, AI in general is not just about speeding things up. It’s about reshaping how we do business. It improves user experience, supports entirely new services. And VSM helps organizations align every investment with strategy goals. Companies now are in the digital transformation journey, moving from project to product funding. Carnival Cruise Lines is in the process of adjusting the investment to the available resources, and is already proving what’s possible.

DR: So on the business side, what do executives need to do to be successful in this world where AI and VSM are coming together?

JLV: Oh, that’s really a tough question. So to lead in an AI plus VSM world, executives must rethink how the organization operates. That means enabling cross-functional collaboration, shifting to a product-based model and preparing teams for the new AI-driven roles. Above all, they need to focus on outcomes, not just outputs. As well, there are cultural and structural shifts required to scale AI successfully. I mean, here the mindset changes. Organizations need to break down silos and remove the resistance to automation. It is important to have strong executive sponsorship in sustaining such transformation.

DR: That’s really the most important, the most difficult part, though, right? To get people to change how they think and how they want to work. So what about data and proprietary knowledge that people have and the fear that AI is going to somehow expose their intellectual property or misuse someone else’s. How important is that for organizations to get a handle on?

JLV: I think it’s critically important. But the thing is, AI is only as good as the context it’s trained on. And if you think about the enterprise knowledge, the product decision, the customer, the understanding of the customer behavior, the internal expertise, this is what makes a competitive advantage of the company, and therefore training your AI on that is truly important. And the value stream management system is often the best place to start extracting and organizing this knowledge for AI.

DR: People are already starting to put AI systems in place. What should companies be focusing on?

JLV: First, get your data house in order and clear up your hierarchy, tools and governance structure. Most enterprises are not starting from a clean state, meaning VSM can rationalize tool chain or surface integration challenges. We also need to define value metrics, speed to value, improve flow efficiency, reduce risk and AI, and VSM can bring more precision in those measurements. They also need to train teams in AI literacy and rethink skill development, just as Carnival is doing with retention and balance. And my last one, my last recommendation, would be to use AI to improve business efficiency and reinvest the savings into innovation.

DR: Fantastic. So where is all this going? We’re laying the foundation now for this kind of work. Where is value stream now going to be headed?

JLV: Value stream management will evolve from managing software delivery to managing business knowledge as a strategic asset as we move forward. AI agents will become part of dual teams, humans and agents working together on goals, and companies will build resilient, learning-driven systems that adapt and self-optimize over time.

DR: I understand that your VSM Summit, which was April 30, attracted more than 1,500 registrants, which certainly shows that there are many organizations interested in doing this kind of work. What were people most interested in attending in terms of sessions or companies speaking? What kind of information were they most looking for, would you say? Was it all about AI particularly, or were there other things as well?

JLV: I think the first outcome from that is you should not view AI adoption and value stream management separately. Together, they unlock the future of work and value creation. And the other message is if you’re already on the VSM journey, you are uniquely positioned to lead the AI transformation in your organization.

Agent Mode for Gemini added to Android Studio

The Android development team has announced the addition of Agent Mode for Gemini in Android Studio.

With Agent Mode, a developer can describe a complex goal, then the agent will come up with an execution plan and then complete the tasks.

The default Gemini model has a no-cost daily quota with a limited context window, or a developer can add their Gemini API key to significantly expand the context window.

Agent Mode also supports MCP so that the agent can use different tools and data sources to unlock additional capabilities and context.

Agent Mode is available in the latest Android Studio Narwhal Feature Drop Canary release.

“We are investing in building more agentic experiences for Gemini in Android Studio to make your development even more intuitive, so you can expect to see more agentic functionality over the next several releases,” Google wrote in a blog post.

Google’s Agent2Agent protocol finds new home at the Linux Foundation

At the Open Source Summit North America, it was announced that Google donated its Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol to the Linux Foundation.

When it was first announced, Google revealed that there were over 50 partners contributing to the project, including Atlassian, Cohere, Datadog, Deloitte, Elastic, Oracle, and Salesforce. According to the Linux Foundation, there are now over 100 technology partners involved in the project.

By joining an organization like the Linux Foundation, the project will benefit from vendor neutrality and inclusive contributions. The organization will also continue the protocol’s focus on extensibility, security, and real-world usability.

“The Agent2Agent protocol establishes a vital open standard for communication, enabling the industry to build truly interoperable AI agents across diverse platforms and systems,” said Rao Surapaneni, vice president and GM of Business Applications Platform at Google Cloud. “By collaborating with the Linux Foundation and leading technology providers, we will enable more innovative and valuable AI capabilities under a trusted, open-governance framework.”
