Los Angeles Co. Shakey's restaurant damaged in overnight fire

A fire erupted overnight in Pico Rivera leaving a local Shakey's restaurant in need of repair Thursday morning.

The blaze was reported around 2 a.m. in the area of Whittier Boulevard and Durfee Avenue, a spokesperson with the Los Angeles County Fire Department told KTLA.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke and fire coming from the roof of the single-story building.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze, which was contained to the southeast side of the restaurant, the spokesperson said.

No further details were given on the extent of the damage.

Investigators had not yet determined the cause of the fire.

No injuries were reported.

Election 2024: Linda Sánchez pulls ahead in CA-38 as early election results roll in

Incumbent Rep. Linda Sánchez appears to have taken a comfortable lead in the 38th congressional district race Tuesday night.

The first round of votes released by the Orange County Registrar of Voters and L.A. County Clerk/Registrar-Recorder shortly after polls closed at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, put the 11-term Democrat from Whittier well ahead of the pack and Eric Ching, a Republican from Walnut, in second place.

Pastor John Sarega and entrepreneur Robert Zhang Ochoa are also vying for the seat.

Results will be updated regularly until the counting is complete.

The top two vote-getters in the primary, regardless of party preference, will advance to the general election in November.

CA-38, anchored in Los Angeles County but spans a portion of Orange County, includes La Habra, Diamond Bar, La Habra Heights, Hacienda Heights, La Mirada, Los Nietos, Norwalk, Montebello, Pico Rivera, Rowland Heights, Santa Fe Springs, Walnut, Whittier and parts of Downey and Industry.

According to state data, Democrats account for 48.1% of all the registered voters in the district, while 23% are Republicans and 22.7% are no party preference voters.

Sánchez, who last year became the first woman to helm BOLD PAC, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus’ campaign arm, is partaking in efforts to galvanize the Latino vote and elect Latino Democrats to Congress. The daughter of immigrants from Mexico, Sánchez is a strong advocate for a pathway to citizenship for “Dreamers,” young immigrants brought to the U.S. unlawfully through no fault of their own.

Ching, a Walnut councilmember, has focused his campaign on border security, being tough on crime, the right to bear arms and the economy. He was defeated by Sánchez by about 16 percentage points in 2022.

Ochoa, who bills himself as a common-sense Christian conservative, wants to lower crime, homelessness, inflation, gas prices, illegal drugs, illegal immigration and healthcare costs, among others.

Sarega ran for this seat in 2022 as well. He placed third in the primary and did not advance to the general.

Pico Rivera man faces decades in prison on drug-money laundering conviction

LOS ANGELES — A Pico Rivera man faces sentencing in April for his role in a money laundering conspiracy that moved millions of dollars in narcotics-related funds from the United States to international drug trafficking organizations.

Gustavo Adolfo Aldana-Martinez, 57, was found guilty late Friday of conspiracy to launder money following a three-day trial in federal court in Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The evidence at trial showed that Aldana-Martinez accepted wire transfers of trafficker-directed drug proceeds sent from an undercover account run by agents with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

After nearly $300,000 was sent to a bank account in the name of his bogus business, Aldana-Martinez made a series of wire transfers to unrelated companies to pay for electronic items that were then shipped to Colombia and Mexico, where they were sold to produce laundered funds for the drug traffickers, prosecutors said.

The evidence showed that Aldana-Martinez laundered about $15.5 million between 2015 and 2017.

The man who oversaw the money laundering enterprise — Daniel Shaun Zilke, 48, of Mexico City, pleaded guilty on Dec. 8 to conspiracy to aid and abet drug distribution, conspiracy to launder money, and obstruction of an official government proceeding for stealing and attempting to cover up the theft of $150,000 in DEA undercover funds.

The third defendant in the case — Jeffrey Mark Thompson, 62, of Springtown, Texas, pleaded guilty on Nov. 27 to conspiracy to aid and abet drug distribution, conspiracy to launder money and money laundering.

All three defendants were named in a federal grand jury indictment filed in January. A fourth defendant in the case — Juan Rachid Dergal-Zulbaran, 48, of Mexico City — is currently a fugitive, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

During the investigation, Zilke approached the DEA in 2019 and offered his cooperation to expose the money laundering organization. After being made a cooperator and agreeing to always be truthful, Zilke received $200,000 in official government funds to be delivered to defendant Thompson.

The intent was for Thompson to launder the money through his bank accounts and return the money to DEA undercover accounts. However, as Zilke admitted in his plea agreement, nearly two weeks after the cash delivery, Zilke returned to Thompson’s residence and took back $150,000 without telling the DEA agents. Officials said evidence shows that after this theft of government funds, he repeatedly lied to the agents about the money and made excuses for why it was taking so long to receive the wire transfers for the full $200,000.

As a result of the conviction and guilty pleas, the three defendants each face potential sentences of decades in federal prison. Zilke is scheduled to be sentenced on April 1, while Thompson and Aldana-Martinez face sentencing on April 8.

Hawthorne man arrested after dead 18-year-old woman found near 605 in Pico Rivera

Authorities found the body of an 18-year-old woman near the 605 Freeway in Pico Rivera and arrested and charged with murder a Hawthorne man.

On Monday, Oct. 16, California Highway Patrol officers received a 911 report of a dead body near the Rose Hills Road on-ramp in Pico Rivera.

When they arrived, officers discovered a dead woman in the ivy, Emily Bortee.

A week later, the CHP arrested Marvell Beroit, 26. The agency did not disclose how it connected the suspect and the crime.

On Thursday, Nov. 16, the case was handed over to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, while filed the murder charge.

Alex Villanueva challenges Janice Hahn for county supervisor, hits on crime and homeless

Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva is back in the political arena, this time as a candidate against two-term L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn.

The combative ex-sheriff, who lost his bid for reelection in November to former Long Beach Police Department Chief Robert Luna 61.3% to 38.7%, announced his campaign on Wednesday, Sept. 13, taking shots at Hahn and other political targets during a press conference in Whittier.

Villanueva also called for the defeat or removal of other elected county officials, including Sheriff Luna, District Attorney George Gascon and other county supervisors running for reelection.

“We are going to take control of county government and make it work for you. It is as simple as that,” Villanueva said, standing in front of a backdrop that read “Save LA 2024.”

According to some political campaign experts in L.A. County, it will not be easy for Villanueva to overtake Hahn, a legacy candidate whose father was a county supervisor from 1952 to 1992 and who the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration is named after.

The first test comes at the primary election on March 5, 2024.

Villanueva supporter Gil Carrillo, who retired from the Sheriff’s Department after serving 38 years, stood alongside Villanueva at a Whittier-area restaurant and said, “The county is broken and we need some help. It’s time for new energy inside the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.”

Hahn’s campaign consultant, David Jacobson, called Villanueva “the Donald Trump of Los Angeles County,” and said county voters, including those in Hahn’s Fourth District, “resoundingly rejected” his attempt to stay on as sheriff due to his “incompetence and corruption.”

Villanueva focused the majority of his hour-long press conference on crime, saying smash-and-grab robberies have become the norm. He criticized the Sheriff’s Department’s response to a robbery last month at a Nike store in East Los Angeles. He said Gascon is to blame for rising crime by not prosecuting misdemeanor crimes.

He also said he was opposed to nonprofits getting funding to build permanent housing for the homeless. “The homeless industrial complex is target number one,” Villanueva said. He supports providing mental health services to the unhoused.

Villanueva criticized the supervisors’ “care first, jails last” policy approved by voters as part of Measure J in 2020. L.A. County officials estimate that $360 million to $900 million will go to social services including housing, mental health treatment and alternatives to incarceration through Measure J.

Villanueva called the voter-approved measure “nonsense” and added: “They (Board of Supervisors) are concerned about the welfare of criminals, not victims.” He objected to what he called shrinking the Sheriff’s and Probation departments’ budgets.

When asked why solved homicides saw a drop under his watch, Villanueva blamed the Board of Supervisors for what he said was a hiring freeze that prevented him from adding detectives. But he later said that as sheriff he was able to hire 1,000 new deputies.

Hahn’s campaign consultant Jacobson said, “L.A. County became less safe under Villanueva’s reign.”

Jack Pitney, professor of government at Claremont McKenna College said on Wednesday, “I think he would start as an underdog.”

Pitney said, “The district has a substantial number of Hispanic voters. He may be hoping that will be a base of support. But in the sheriff race, the district voted for Luna.”

As for running on a platform of reducing crime, Pitney added: “A lot of the increase in crime in Los Angeles happened on his watch. He doesn’t have a strong rhetorical basis.”

Jaime Regalado, professor emeritus of political science at Cal State Los Angeles, said on Wednesday, “Janice Hahn has no worries.”

Regalado said, “He basically got slaughtered by the new sheriff (Luna). There is nothing in this world that would allow Villanueva to win against Janice Hahn.”

Joel Fox, adjunct professor at Pepperdine School of Public Policy, said, “I think it’s important to have a competition of ideas for public office. So let the debate begin.”

The Fourth District spans 411 square miles and contains more than 2 million people. It runs from Torrance, Palos Verdes, San Pedro and Long Beach up through the 605 Freeway corridor cities to Whittier, then west to Huntington Park, Lynwood and South Gate.

After stints on the L.A. City Council and in Congress, Hahn was elected to the board in 2016 and was reelected to another term in 2020 and currently serves as the board’s chair. Since supervisors are limited to three terms, if she wins in 2024, it will be her last term.

“My fight for the people of the 4th District is far from over,” Hahn said in a prepared statement after announcing earlier this year that she was running for a third term. “The battle to create transformative, positive, and lasting change on behalf of the hard-working people of L.A. County must go on – and I plan to be at the tip of the spear of this fight.”

Hahn was endorsed by numerous city council members in her district, as well as Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson. She also was endorsed by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Villanueva calls himself a centrist Democrat, after initially running as a progressive. But he said he no longer followed progressive politics after some members called for defunding the police. He said he has no intention to join the Republican Party.

“His base now does not include liberal Democrats and much fewer progressives,” Pitney said. “When challenging someone like Hahn, that is not going to be enough.”

Also declaring his intention to run for the supervisorial seat is Rancho Palos Verdes Councilmember John Cruikshank.

All three candidates filed campaign finance report forms with the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk. Official filings to get on the March 5 ballot take place later this year.

“I’m confident the party will support chair Hahn in the reelection,” said Mark Gonzalez, L.A. County Democratic Party Chair.

Plans for new Metrolink stations in Boyle Heights and Pico Rivera press on

In an effort to add ridership and get cars off the road, Metrolink trains may soon stop at two new stations in Los Angeles County — one at the Los Angeles General Medical Center in Boyle Heights and the other in Pico Rivera.

The stations are under study by LA Metro, the county transit agency that helps fund Metrolink, a heavy-rail passenger service that operates seven lines and 65 stations in Southern California.

LA Metro’s board voted on Thursday, June 22 to add $10 million to Metrolink’s regional rail program, which is exploring adding the stations.

The added stop at the L.A. County hospital campus would come off the San Bernardino Line, which has stops in Montclair, Pomona, Covina, Baldwin Park, El Monte, Cal State Los Angeles and downtown L.A.’s Union Station.

A station in Pico Rivera would be served by two Metrolink train lines, the 91/Perris Valley line and the Orange County line. The station would be located between the Norwalk/Santa Fe Springs Station and the Commerce Station, said Scott Johnson, Metrolink spokesman. The 91/Perris Valley line and the San Bernardino line are the two busiest in the Metrolink system.

A $500,000 feasibility study looking at the L.A. County hospital stop was completed in 2022. The study concluded that adding a station would benefit more than 9,600 essential hospital workers and visitors.

The study also found that having a direct stop at the hospital campus would help decrease traffic on streets in Boyle Heights and provide a carless transit service to support new additions planned for what was once called the LAC+USC Medical Center. Plans include additional housing and a Restorative Care Village that provides residential treatment for mental health care, substance use disorders and other services. A first phase costing $68.5 million was completed in July 2022.

“We are rebranding and reimagining what we are doing there,” said Supervisor and LA Metro board member Hilda Solis, whose motion for a study of a Metrolink stop there was approved in 2021. “We have added restorative care and more housing there.

“The best way to get there — without having to drive and park — is to take Metrolink,” she said. “Metrolink (San Bernadino Line) helps connect people as far away as San Bernardino and Pomona, many who work at the General Hospital.”

In a survey taken by 1,500 employees at the regional hospital, 55% said they would use the train with the direct stop. Some employees take the line to Union Station, then take a county bus to the county hospital, Solis said.

“We do see professionals such as nurses, doctors and medical technicians who use the line. But this would cut down on the time of their commute,” she said.

Others who visit the hospital campus or come for a doctor’s appointment often have to take three or four buses to get there and it can take them three to four hours, Solis said.

Metro is moving ahead with preparing environmental documents that could pave the way for the new station to be built, according to Jay Fuhrman, Metro’s regional transportation planner and Deputy Executive Officer of Regional Rail Brian Balderrama.

Planning for the Pico Rivera station is not as far along.

Metro will hire a consultant to start the feasibility study this fall, wrote Fuhrman and Balderrama in an email. The study will begin in the fall. Completion of the study is expected in the fall of 2024, they reported.

This follows a Metro board motion approved in February 2023 from Fourth District Supervisor Janice Hahn, Glendale Mayor Ara Najarian and Whittier City Council member Fernando Dutra to authorize the feasibility study.

The station would integrate with plans for a future A Line (formerly Gold Line) Eastside Extension, as well as a new bus rapid transit line — plus bike paths for active transportation, Fuhrman and Balderrama wrote. The cost ranges from $20 million to $200 million, according to a city report.

Pico Rivera City Manager Steve Carmona said the addition of a Metrolink station is part of an overall city transportation and sustainability plan.

“One, it is for economic development. Two, it is to create an environment to take residents out of their cars,” Carmona said on Tuesday, June 27.

An Arizona man admitted in federal court in Riverside on Monday, May 15, that he committed a four-county armed robbery spree in Southern California in 2022 that ended when he accidentally shot himself at the end of a police pursuit, the U.S. Justice Department said.

Samuel Sven Smith, 27, of Phoenix, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to two counts of interference with commerce by robbery and two counts of brandishing and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.

Smith faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 17 years in federal prison and up to life in prison when he is sentenced on Jan. 22 by Judge Jesus G. Bernal.

According to his plea agreement, from July 31, 2022, until his arrest on Aug. 20, 2022, Smith robbed a Big Lots store in Riverside and PetSmart stores in Signal Hill, Orange, San Bernardino, Fontana, Pico Rivera, Redlands, Rancho Cucamonga and Phoenix, each time brandishing a firearm at employees.

After Smith robbed the Rancho Cucamonga PetSmart, stealing $400, he was confronted by police officers and federal agents. Smith shot at the officers and drove away. Smith fired at officers during a high-speed chase that ended when officers rammed Smith’s car.

Police who approached Smith’s car found him suffering from a gunshot wound, which Smith told them happened when he accidentally shot himself during the collision, according to a sworn affidavit filed with the criminal complaint in this case.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ Orange County Violent Crime Task Force investigated the crimes.

Groundbreaking Southern California lawmaker Gloria Molina passed away Sunday, May 14, at age 74. Here are some key dates and achievements from her history-making career:

May 31, 1948: Jesús Gloria Molina is born in Montebello. Parents Leonardo Castillo Molina and Concepción Molina immigrated to Los Angeles area from Mexico. She is named for her paternal grandmother.

Childhood: Gloria was raised as one of 10 Molina children, mostly in Pico Rivera. She attends elementary school in the city and goes on to graduate from El Rancho High.

Education: Molina attended Rio Hondo College, East Los Angeles College and Cal State L.A.

Early career: Molina worked full time as a legal secretary while attending college. Then later, she earned her certificate as an adult education instructor and taught clerical skills at the East Los Angeles Skills Center.

Early activism: Molina was engaged in Southern California’s Chicano movement and fought to expand women’s health access. Amid a local shortage of nurses, she initiated a nurse mentoring program that teamed up with Los Angeles area community colleges to recruit and assist Latina students on track for nursing degrees. Served as a member of the Comisión Femenil Mexicana Nacional de Los Angeles. She helped establish the Chicana Action Service Center, which advocated for the rights of all Chicanas.

1976: Molina becomes administrative assistant for Assemblyman Art Torres.

Can students help stop school violence before it starts? LA County leaders think so

Facing a growing mental health crisis in classrooms, Los Angeles County school and mental health officials are now looking to fellow students to help identify and stop campus violence before it starts.

At the El Rancho Youth Center Boys and Girls Club in Pico Rivera Friday, Supervisor Janice Hahn along with school and city officials urged students to take advantage of the county’s School Threat Assessment Response Team (START) program, which helps assess and respond to potential school threats.

“We know that young people who’ve committed school violence often mentioned or discussed their plans beforehand, often with other students, or on social media,” Hahn said. “So we need to make sure that students who witness these early signs know about the START Program and know that they have trusted adults that they can call.”

For years the program, operated by mental health professionals trained in risk assessments who work with law enforcement and schools to mitigate threats, has been targeted at school staff, but now officials are pushing students to be involved in monitoring their peers.

“One of the most powerful weapons we have is the ability for our young people to have some agency in their own hands to feel like they don’t just have to wait around for something scary to happen and be anxious about it but there’s something they can do to be a part of the solution,” said L.A. County Department of Mental Health Director Lisa Wong.

“We’re hoping to put it in the hands of the people who usually see the signs before everybody else sees them.”

According to the program’s lead clinician Dr. Nichola Beliz, their mental health professionals focus on a students behavior rather than their words for signs of being a potential threat to themselves or others — like fascination with previous mass shooters or preoccupation with the military or white supremacy ideology.

“Basically what we do is collect more data to see the level of risk at that point. Our interventions vary but basically the other person on the end of the phone will be able to guide the concerned individual in the right direction, whether they call local police or they get in contact with their mental health partners in the community,” Beliz said.

On top of the renewed focus on students, the program expanded from 10 clinicians working the phones for all of LA County to 42.

The new campaign features social media ads, PSA from school shooting survivor Mia Tretta, and in-school posters in 200 high schools to encourage students to contact the START program if they witness concerning or threatening behavior by a fellow student.

The campaign’s tagline, “If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t,” was developed through focus groups with students at Saugus and Arcadia High Schools.

People can access START program resources by calling (213) 739-5565 or emailing START@dmh.lacounty.gov, which will anonymously connect them with a mental health professional to assess their situation. A text service is also being worked on.

Gang Members Arrested In Anaheim, Pico Rivera; Dozens Of Guns Seized In Raids By FBI, SoCal Law Enforcement Agencies

ANAHEIM (CBSLA) — A massive operation involving more than a dozen law enforcement agencies took aim at taking down violent gangs in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

FBI officials announced 10 new arrests of a street gang out of Anaheim Wednesday. The arrests come after a year-long investigation into the gang’s alleged firearm sales and drug distribution in Orange County.

During more than 25 controlled purchase operations between July 2019 and August 2020, a confidential source purchased methamphetamine and nearly two dozen firearms from several members of the gang, according to the FBI. The DEA seized six more firearms, including rifles and pistols, rifle scopes, AR-15 upper receivers, one suppresser, and a pipe bomb.

Seven weapons were also seized during Wednesday’s raids.

A total of sixteen people were charged in the case, three of whom were previously in custody, and three others who are fugitives.

In a separate case, seven members or associates of a Pico Rivera-based gang that also operates in North Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley were charged Wednesday. Two of those gang members were arrested in an operation Wednesday, three were already in custody and two more remain at large, according to the FBI.

The gang is known for “violent tactics” in trafficking narcotics and weapons, according to the FBI, and twenty-two weapons were seized during the investigation.

The FBI says they have seized 180 guns – 37 of which were untraceable “ghost guns” – in the past six months of investigating gang-related cases.

Man Killed In Pico Rivera Shooting

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) — A man was fatally shot Tuesday in Pico Rivera.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to the 9500 block of Telegraph Road around 12:44 a.m..

Upon their arrival, deputies found a man in his 40s lying in front of a business at a strip mall, the LASD said.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

3 Teens Arrested In Armed Robbery Spree Across LA County

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Three teen boys have been taken into custody in connection with a slew of armed robberies at gas stations and convenience stores that occurred earlier this week across Los Angeles County.

The robberies occurred in Norwalk, Bellflower, Pico Rivera, Whittier, Downey and the city of Industry, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.

The robberies occurred between Sunday and Tuesday, the sheriff’s department said.

On Tuesday, sheriff’s detectives were able to identify the robbery suspects’ car and license plate. That same day, a deputy in Bellflower spotted the vehicle, which was carrying the three suspects, and pulled it over.

The three teens were positively identified as the armed robbers by several witnesses and victims, the sheriff’s department said.

In the car, deputies also found $1,000 in cash and evidence from the robberies, the sheriff’s department said. However, a handgun that was used in the robberies remains missing.

Vanessa Vidal Of Pico Rivera Found Murdered In Victorville Desert

VICTORVILLE (CBSLA) — Authorities say a body found this week in an open area of the Victorville desert has been identified as a Pico Rivera woman.

Vanessa Vidal, 34, was identified Thursday as the woman whose body near the roadway of Hook Boulevard and Mesa Linda Avenue. A witness had reported seeing the body near the 14900 block of Mesa Linda Avenue, in an open area of desert.

Vidal was found at about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday with traumatic injuries, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

An investigation is ongoing into Vidal’s murder. Anyone with information about the murder can contact the San Bernardino County sheriff’s Homicide Detail at (909) 387-3609.

Sheriffs Investigate Shooting In Pico Rivera On Sunday

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) – A suspect is at large in a shooting in Pico Rivera on Sunday.

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Dork Street.

Los Angeles Sheriff’s Deputies were notified of a traffic collision and possible hit-and-run, but when they arrived on scene they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. The man was sitting in his car.

The deputies initiated emergency life-saving techniques, but the man was pronounced dead shortly after.

At this point in the investigation there is no known motive for the shooting. Authorities are canvassing the area for any potential information, including surveillance footage from nearby buildings.

Road Rage Suspect Taken Into Custody Following Pursuit

WILLOWBROOK (CBSLA) – A road rage suspect was taken into custody in Willowbrook following a pursuit with authorities spanning several cities.

At about 5:50 p.m. California Highway Patrol units were pursuing the man driving a silver sedan on the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway in the Santa Fe Springs area.

He exited the freeway in the Pico Rivera area, driving at high speeds against traffic through Downey before entering the southbound Long Beach (710) Freeway in Bell Gardens.

The suspect made his way through the South Gate and Lynwood areas before transitioning onto the westbound Century (105) Freeway and eventually exiting onto Central Avenue in Los Angeles. He drove to the area of Belhaven Avenue and East El Segundo Bouelvard, near Centennial High School, where he stopped just after 6:15 p.m.

The man surrendered to police and was taken into custody without further incident.

Fatal Deputy-Involved Shooting Sunday In Unincorporated LA

Whittier (CBSLA) – A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy from the Pico Rivera station fatally shot a man in an unincorporated section of L.A. County near Whittier Sunday.

The shooting occurred just before 5 p.m. near the intersection of Obregon Street and Eduardo Avenue, according to L.A. County Sheriff’s Deputy Eva Jimenez.

The man died at the scene, Jimenez said. His age was not immediately released.

His name will be withheld pending notification of next of kin.

There was no immediate word on the events that led up to the deputy-involved shooting, Jimenez said, though a gun was recovered at the scene.

No deputies were injured during the incident.

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) – A new billboard has gone up to bring attention to the approximately 40 cows which escaped from a Pico Rivera slaughterhouse last month and ran wild through a residential neighborhood.

The billboard, headlined “Remember The Pico Rivera 41” has gone up at Beverly Boulevard and Di Maria Road, near Manning Beef.

On the evening of June 22, about 40 cows escaped through a gate that had accidentally been left open by an employee at Manning Beef.

The herd galloped into a residential neighborhood about a mile from the slaughterhouse.

At one point, about 20 to 30 settled into a cul-de-sac on Calico Avenue, surrounded by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies. The deputies attempted to round up the livestock, but were unsuccessful, and the cattle scattered throughout the neighborhood.

One cow was shot and killed by deputies after it charged at a family of four. By early the next morning, 38 of the cows had been rounded up and returned to the slaughterhouse thanks to some experienced ranchers.

The last remaining cow was found two days later in a South El Monte park, about five miles from the meatpacking plant. That cow was moved to an animal sanctuary and its life spared thanks to a donation from Grammy award-winning songwriter Diane Warren.

The remaining cows that were returned to the plant were slaughtered.

The billboard was funded by several animal rights groups, including Animal Alliance Network, Peace 4 Animals and World Animal News.

“Taking action to save the lives of animals is the most important thing that we can do to create change,” said Katie Cleary, president of Peace 4 Animals and World Animal News, in a statement. “This billboard serves as a reminder that animals are sentient beings that should be treated with compassion and respect. With so many delicious plant-based food options now available, there is simply no justification for cows, or any animals, to be senselessly slaughtered for their meat. It needs to stop, not only for the health of people and animals, but for the future of this beautiful planet we all share.”

ACTON (CBSLA) – The last cow standing, out of 40 head of cattle that escaped from Manning Beef in Pico Rivera Wednesday and stampeded through the streets, has found a home on a farm sanctuary in Acton.

Of the 40 cows that escaped, one was shot by police officers as it charged a family, and the other 38 were returned to the meatpacking plant and slaughtered.

“I am in the meat business. The animals were harvested. Note, they were raised for the public to consume,” the Chairman of Manning Beef told City News Service.

However, one of the cattle that remained elusive and wasn’t captured until a day after the escape, some five miles away in South El Monte, was spared. She was released at the farm sanctuary after receiving a health checkup and will be able to live out her days at the location.

Grammy award winning singer-songwriter Diane Warren spearheaded the successful effort to save the cow and have it sent to the sanctuary.

The public will actually be able to see the lucky cow, and all the other animals on the sanctuary, when it reopens on July 10.

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) – The Manning Beef Company said that all of cows that escaped from its plant in Pico Rivera Wednesday, June 23, and ran wild through city streets, have been slaughtered with the exception of one.

Animal rights activists held a vigil outside the meatpacking plant Thursday in hopes of saving the cows from slaughter.

In all, 40 head of cattle escaped through a gate that had accidentally been left open at Manning Beef in the 9500 block of Beverly Road, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The incident began at around 7:30 p.m.

The herd galloped towards Beverly Road and Durfee Avenue and eventually ran into a residential neighborhood about a mile from the slaughterhouse. Authorities warned people to stay away from the area as the cattle were rounded up and returned.

A woman attended the event wearing a cow costume and holding a sign that read, “Cows are like big puppies.” Other signs also called for the livestock to be spared.

“The rumor is they have been slaughtered,” Ellen Dent, an animal rights activist, said. “But we do see cows off in the distance in a pen.”

That fact gives the protesters hope that the animals will get a second chance at life, much like the last cow that was captured Thursday morning in South El Monte — five miles away from Manning Beef Company.

“I’m so glad that at least one of them is gonna be able to get to safety,” Dent said.

Dent runs the Animal Alliance Network, one of several groups and celebrities that helped rescue that cow from slaughter.

“I reached out to Diane Warren who made this happen,” she said.

The Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter offered to save the cow from slaughter and send her instead to a local sanctuary in Acton.

“One of these animals is coming to Farm Sanctuary where they’re going to live out a good life,” Gene Baur, president of the Farm Sanctuary, said. “They will be given a name instead of a number, and they’re gonna be our friend and not gonna be treated as food.”

Baur said Farm Sanctuary provides lifelong care for animals rescued from abuse.

“This is, I believe, the seventh animal that has come to us from this particular slaughterhouse,” he said.

Other animals include a mom and baby pair rescued by actor Joaquin Phoenix early last year.

As for the activists, they are asking the owner of Manning Beef Company to hand over the surviving cows.

“We want them to make amends,” Dent said.

According to one of the men who came to help lasso the cows Tuesday night said the owner of the company was trampled by a cow as he tried to round them up.

“We wish him well,” Dent said. “Because we did hear that he is in the hospital.”

Pico Rivera City Manager Steven Carmona said the city was collecting damage estimates from residents whose mailboxes, fences and cars were damaged in the stampede. The company has only said that the incident is under investigation.

The lone cow was discovered sometime before 6 a.m. in a park in the 1600 block of Rosemead Boulevard, near the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area. The park is about five miles from the meatpacking plant from which it had escaped.

The Black Angus ran in circles as cars whizzed by on busy Rosemead Boulevard until Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies were able to corner it with their vehicles. Two ranchers roped and captured it. The cow was loaded into a trailer and returned to the slaughterhouse by around 8:15 a.m.

However, at a news conference later Thursday morning, Pico Rivera city officials revealed that Grammy award-winning songwriter Diane Warren had come forward to spare the life of the cow. Warren will pay for the cow to be taken to an animal sanctuary, officials said.

On the night the breakout occurred, Warren had tweeted, “This breaks my f—— heart. These poor babies escaping for their lives. They know their fate. How cruel human beings are.”

Since Warren stepped forward to save the cow, officials in Pico Rivera said they are trying to facilitate similar requests that are coming in.

Pico Rivera City Manager Steven Carmona said the city is collecting damage estimates from residents whose mailboxes, fences and cars were damaged in the stampede. The city plans on taking the list to Manning Beef.

“We haven’t confirmed that they will satisfy that, but we’re going to make sure that they take care of those issues for our residents,” Carmona said in a press conference.

Manning Beef has yet to make a public statement about the accidental escape of the cows.

The incident began at around 7:30 p.m. when the cows escaped through a gate that had accidentally been left open at Manning Beef in the 9500 block of Beverly Road, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Video posted to social media showed the large group of cows running down Beverly Road and into Marisela Alvarez’s yard.

“It was just like a stampede,” Alvarez said. “Boom!”

The cows left hoof prints, a busted fence and droppings in Alvarez’s yard. She said she went to the slaughterhouse to confront the owners about fixing her fence and was shooed away.

“It was careless what they did,” she said. “It was so careless. It could happen again. It’s not the cows’ fault, you can’t blame the cows for it.”

At one point, about 20 to 30 settled into a cul-de-sac on Calico Avenue, surrounded by sheriff’s deputies. The deputies attempted to round up the livestock, but were unsuccessful, and the cattle scattered throughout the neighborhood.

“I was so freaked out, so I went and hugged my mom,” 5-year-old Matteo, who lives in that cul-de-sac said. “I think they ran over here to eat grass.”

Other residents said the cows appeared to be injured and were bleeding. Margarita Rios, who also lives in the cul-de-sac said she believes the cattle got injured while knocking over mailboxes, trampling fences and bumping into cars while being chased down the neighborhood streets.

“If you think about it, it is kind of sad,” she said.

One cow was shot and killed by deputies after it charged at a family of four, knocking some of them to the ground, the sheriff’s department said. The family was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Some experienced ranchers who heard what had happened brought their lassos and came to help corral the livestock. It took several hours to round up the cattle and load them into trailers. The LASD Mounted Enforcement Detail was also called in.

“I tried holding it down a bit, and it was too heavy, so it dragged me a couple hundred feet,” rancher John Pitones told CBSLA of his experience trying to wrangle one of the escaped cows. “Once they start running, they get scared, they get anxious and they just don’t want to stop running. So you’ve got to give them the time and the proper procedures for how to capture them.”

By early Wednesday morning, 38 of the cows had been returned to the slaughterhouse. One was still missing.

The Manning Beef Company said it was investigating the incident. Neighbors said they hope the company will help pay for the damage caused.

Tyrome Lewis Of Lynwood Found Guilty Of Leading ‘Oxy Bandits’ In 15 Armed Robberies Of Small Southern California Pharmacies

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — A Lynwood man was found guilty Wednesday of organizing and leading more than a dozen armed robberies of small pharmacies across Southern California for prescription painkillers like oxycodone.

After a two-day bench trial in April, U.S. District Judge John A. Kronstandt issued his ruling Wednesday, finding 26-year-old Tyrome “Boobie” Lewis of eight felony charges, including conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery, conspiracy to distribute oxycodone, interference with commerce by robbery, possession with intent to distribute oxycodone and knowingly using and brandishing a firearm during a violent crime.

Federal prosecutors say Lewis conspired with a crew between May 2018 and July 2019 to pick independent “mom-and-pop” pharmacies to steal oxycodone and similar prescription medication. During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that Lewis assigned roles to the crew members and served as lookout during the robberies. The Lewis-led crew struck pharmacies in Glendale, Bellflower, Paramount, Cerritos, Hawthorne, South Los Angeles, Pico Rivera, Huntington Park, Claremont, Westminster, Fullerton, Anaheim, and Riverside, and came to be known as the “Oxy Bandits.”

Investigators determined the 15 robberies across Southern California shared similar characteristics – small pharmacies robbed for prescription drugs that were stuffed into trash bags or trash cans, while employees were threatened or intimidated with a black semi-automatic handgun to open the medication vault.

Federal prosecutors say Lewis is just one of 21 people charged in a larger, joint FBI and Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigation into a series of armed pharmacy robberies since 2019.

Lewis, who faces a statutory maximum sentence of life in federal prison, is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 23.

Man Found Shot To Death Inside Overturned Car In Pico Rivera

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) – A man was found shot and killed at the scene of a crash in Pico Rivera Thursday night.

At 9:50 p.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a crash at Citrus Drive and Olympic Boulevard.

They arrived on scene to find an overturned car and a man inside of it with a gunshot wound to the upper torso, the sheriff’s department said.

The man died at the scene. He was not identified.

Deputies still do not have a motive in the killing. There was no description of the gunman.

Horses Killed In Pico Rivera Barn Fire

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) – At least two horses have been killed in a barn fire in Pico Rivera early Monday morning.

The blaze broke out at around 3 a.m. in the 3700 block of South Durfee Avenue.

Los Angeles County firefighters responded to find several barns behind a home ablaze.

At least two horses died in the fire and another two were rescued, the fire department said. There was no word of any injuries to people.

Crews were still battling the flames as of 5 a.m. The cause and circumstances of the fire are under investigation.

Pico Rivera Finalizing Site For COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) — The city of Pico Rivera is working with the LA County Department of Public Health to set up a site to dispense the COVID-19 vaccine when it is approved for public distribution.

Distribution of COVID-19 vaccinations from Pfizer and Moderna could begin as soon as this weekend, but Pico Rivera city officials say it’s not known yet when its Medical Point of Dispensing, or MPOD, will be activated.

“We are ready to move forward as soon as the county gives us the green light,” City Manager Steve Carmona said in a statement.

Pico Rivera approved its formal partnership with the county Department of Public Health, but it is one of several cities standing by to assist in the mass distribution of preventive medications during emergency conditions from contagious, infectious, or communicable disease; or chemical, biologic or radioactive agents that threaten the health of the general public, according to officials.

Finalizing a site will require a large open space — like a park or local sports arena, storage, room for drive-up and walk-up vaccinations, a place for patients to be held to ensure there are no immediate side effects. Patients will also need to be able to come back in 30 days to get an additional dose.

Current city employees would be reassigned to assist in the vaccination distribution effort, and Pico Rivera says it is finalizing the selection of the site where it will be dispensed.

LA County expects the first 83,000 doses to arrive next week and go to nine storage sites, then 83 hospitals.

Missing Pico Rivera Woman Carolina Martinez Found After 5 Months

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) — Authorities on Monday announced they located a critically ill 30-year-old Pico Rivera woman who was last seen about five months ago.

Carolina Martinez has schizoaffective disorder and a brain tumor, authorities said.

She was last seen in the 6500 block of Rosemead Boulevard near Washington Boulevard, at about 7:50 p.m. on July 11.

No details about her whereabouts over the past few months or how she was located have been disclosed.

Dining In A Shipping Container? Pico Rivera Gets Creative With Outdoor ‘Parklets’

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) – If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to enjoy a meal in a shipping container, now you can finally get the chance in Pico Rivera.

Seeking creative ways to support local businesses during the coronavirus pandemic, the city of Pico Rivera Thursday began testing out a new experience it calls “parklets,” in which street areas will be transformed into microparks and outdoor dining spaces.

One of those parklets involved repurposing a shipping container to be used as an outdoor dining space for Brewjeria, a local eatery located in the 4900 block of Durfee Avenue.

“Parklets invite people to support local businesses by offering new and exciting public facilities,” the city said. Parklets come in many shapes, forms, and designs.”

When not in use by restaurants, parklets will be open to the public. If the first few are successful, the parklet program will be expanded.

The shipping container being used by Brewjeria was painted by muralist Alexis O’Neal.

Several cities throughout the Southland have closed major streets to vehicle traffic in an effort to help struggling restaurants.

In mid-July, Burbank closed a stretch of San Fernando Boulevard – one of its busiest downtown streets – so that restaurants could expand outdoor dining areas. They extended the closure through at least mid-January.

The Los Angeles City Council is considering making its own Al Fresco program permanent. The program, which began in May, makes it easier for restaurants to get the permits they need to expand outdoor eating to sidewalks, private parking lots and streets.

One Suspect Killed, Second Wounded After Pico Rivera Resident Opens Fire During Break-In

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) – One suspect was killed, a second was wounded and a female getaway driver is in custody after a resident opened fire during a home invasion in Pico Rivera early Friday morning, authorities said.

The two suspects were shot while breaking into a home in the 8400 block of Serapis Avenue at around 1:15 a.m., the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reports.

A man told deputies he heard a window in the back of his home shattering, so he grabbed a handgun and went to investigate, where he came upon one of the burglary suspects, sheriff’s Lt. Brad Hall told reporters.

He opened fire, striking the suspect in the chest, Hall said. The resident then went onto the back patio, where he came upon the second suspect.

He thought he saw the suspect make a move towards his waist — and afraid the suspect may be grabbing for a gun — he fired again, striking the suspect, who died at the scene, Hall said.

His name was not released. It’s unclear if he was armed.

The first wounded suspect fled the home and was then driven to a hospital by a female getaway driver. He is undergoing surgery. His condition is unknown. The woman is in custody.

“The first suspect fled, left in a getaway vehicle, was taken to a hospital by the female driver,” Hall said. “And he remains in the hospital, he’s in surgery now with a gunshot to the torso. The female was taken into custody by sheriff’s deputies.”

There were other people in a different part of the home when the shooting occurred, but they were not hurt, Hall said.

The two suspects may be linked to a gang, Hall said. There was no word on whether the home was specifically targeted, or if the break-in was random in nature.

“We always see people coming in, coming out, on bicycles, a lot of people were just outside most of the times,” Neighbor Raul Perez told CBSLA.

The resident has been interviewed by investigators. It’s unclear if he will face any charges.

Suspect Pleads Not Guilty In Wild Pico Rivera Carjacking That Left 13-Year-Old Girl Dead, Her Siblings Injured

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) — A man pleaded not guilty on Wednesday in a deadly carjacking that killed a 13-year-old girl and seriously injured her 8-year-old brother.

26-year-old Jose Elias Aguilar, of Los Angeles, is charged with one count of murder and corporal injury to a child, and four counts each of carjacking and kidnapping during the commission of a carjacking.

The carjacking happened in the 9000 block of Whittier Boulevard near Lindsay Avenue on July 5.

The young girl who died was identified by family as 13-year-old Isabella Cortes.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Cortes and her three siblings — 8, 11, and 18 years old — were sitting inside their family car, waiting for their parents outside the La Mano Tortilleria restaurant when a carjacker hopped inside.

The 18-year-old and 11-year-old managed to get out, but Cortes and her 8-year-old brother were still trapped inside as the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Jose Aguilar, sped off.

The 8-year-old suffered major injuries after being ejected and Cortes’ injuries were fatal. She died at the scene.

“[Isabella] was friendly with people. She didn’t have any problems,” her cousin Brenda Santiago said at a memorial for the teen. “She was super nice.”

Detectives say Aguilar got into a crash down the street then tried to carjack another vehicle a few miles away before he was held by civilians until police came to take him into custody.

Prosecutors will decide later whether to seek the death penalty against Aguilar, who had recently been arrested and released on zero bail for felony possession of a dirk/dagger and vandalism and was on summary probation for other crimes, according to officials.

Aguilar remains jailed without bail and is due back at the Norwalk courthouse on Nov. 3 for the setting of a preliminary hearing date.

‘She Was The Happiest Girl I Ever Met’: Family Devastated After 13-Year-Old’s Death In Pico Rivera Carjacking

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) — As a suspect in a deadly Pico Rivera carjacking sits behind bars, a community is mourning the loss of 13-year-old Isabella Cortes, who they described as friendly, funny and happy.

“She was the happiest girl I ever met,” her cousin Brenda Santiago said. “She always makes her family laugh with her jokes and everything.”

The teen and her three siblings — 8, 11, and 18 years old — were sitting inside their family car on Sunday, waiting for their parents outside a restaurant when a carjacker jumped in and sped off.

The 11-year-old and 18-year-old escaped with minor injuries but Cortes and her younger 8-year-old brother were still trapped inside the vehicle.

Shortly after, Cortes suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene after either jumping from the vehicle or getting ejected.

Her 8-year-old brother was left with major injuries, and the rest of the family is now struggling with the sudden tragedy that took Isabella’s life.

Detectives say the suspect tried to carjack another vehicle after crashing and ditching the van with the siblings.

27-year-old Jose Aguilar was arrested minutes after the incident, and according to authorities, he was recently arrested and released on felony possession of a dagger and vandalism. He was also on probation for other charges.

Aguilar is currently in jail on no bail and is expected to have a court hearing on Wednesday.

Girl Killed, Her Siblings Injured In Wild Pico Rivera Carjacking

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) — A Pico Rivera family is mourning on Sunday night after a carjacking left their daughter dead and other family members injured.

The carjacking happened in the 9000 block of Whittier Boulevard near Lindsay Avenue, officials said.

The young girl who died was identified by family as 13-year-old Isabella Cortes.

Family members held a memorial on Sunday night in her honor shortly after the deadly incident.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Cortes and her three siblings — 8, 11, and 18 years old — were sitting inside their family car, waiting for their parents outside a restaurant when a carjacker hopped inside.

The 18-year-old and 11-year-old managed to get out, but Cortes and her 8-year-old brother were still trapped inside as the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Jose Aguilar, sped off.

Rising Coronavirus Infections Prompts Pico Rivera To Shut Down Parks

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) — In advance of the Fourth of July holiday weekend, the city of Pico Rivera has shut down its parks until further notice because of the surge of coronavirus infections.

A total of 963 residents of Pico Rivera have tested positive for coronavirus since the outbreak began and 40 residents have died, based on data reported through Tuesday. Pico Rivera has a population of 63,000.

The closure includes the city’s playgrounds, fitness equipment, basketball courts, skate parks, baseball, soccer and multi-use fields.

City officials say they will monitor the situation weekly to determine when it will be safe for families to frequent parks again.

Outdoor recreation is being shut down again as the Fourth of July holiday weekend – and the desire to hold cookouts and gather with friends and family – approaches. Los Angeles and Ventura counties will shut down their beaches for the holiday weekend, along with the city of Laguna Beach, because of the spike in COVID-19 cases across the state.

Pico Rivera Mayor Accused Of Reimbursing Campaign Donations To Montebello School Board Member

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — The mayor of Pico Rivera has been charged, along with the owner of an educational consulting firm, with improperly reimbursing family members and friends for donating money to the campaign of a Montebello school board member.

Gustavo Vidal Camacho, 54, and Luis Diaz Rojas, 55, were each charged with felony conspiracy to commit improper identification of a campaign contributor and a misdemeanor count of making a campaign contribution under a false name or improper identification of a campaign contributor, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Camacho was first elected to the Pico Rivera City Council in November of 2009 and has served as mayor three times.

Rojas, the owner of the DelTerra Group, and Camacho are each accused of taking part in a scheme to launder contributions to Joanna Flores, a board member of the Montebello Unified School District. According to the District Attorney’s Office, donors were reimbursed after being enlisted by Rojas and Camacho to sign checks to the Flores campaign.

If convicted as charged, both men face up to three years in county jail. They are both scheduled to make their next court appearance on Oct. 8.

Pico Rivera Launches Free Coronavirus Testing Tuesday For All Residents

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – The city of Pico Rivera is launching free drive-up coronavirus testing for all its residents beginning Tuesday.

The new site will begin providing free testing at the Pico Rivera Sports Arena at 9 a.m. To receive a test, you must make an appointment online first.

“No one will be denied,” the city said in a news release. Priority will be given to city residents, but people from the surrounding area can also sign up.

The tests are being conducted in conjunction with the nonprofit group US Health Fairs, which is also doing free testing in the city of Carson.

Test results will be received within 24 to 36 hours, officials said.

As of Monday, Pico Rivera had 263 confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the Los Angeles County Public Health Department.

Countywide, over 240,000 people have been tested, with 12 percent returning positive results for the disease.

Man Shot To Death In Pico Rivera

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) — A man was shot and killed Saturday afternoon in front of a shopping center in Pico Rivera.

The shooting was reported at 2:24 p.m. at Whittier Boulevard and Acacia Avenue, according to Pico Rivera Sheriff’s Department.

It appears the victim — who has not been identified — was shot in the street and then stumbled into the shopping center parking lot before being rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries.

It’s unclear which shopping center this occurred.

No suspect information was provided.

Driver, 4 Passengers In Custody Following CHP Pursuit

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — All occupants — a juvenile male, three adult males and one adult female — of a vehicle that led police on a high-speed, often dangerous, hour-long pursuit Sunday evening were taken into custody.

According to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, the pursuit began near Rio Hondo College by Workman Mill Road in the Pico Rivera after an assault with a deadly weapon. It was later confirmed that a knife was involved in the assault.

It was not immediately known if there were any injuries related to the assault.

A responding deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department then saw a vehicle matching the description from the assault call, and at some point a suspect allegedly pointed a firearm at the deputy.

The driver of the black GMC Yukon led law enforcement officers on a pursuit that crisscrossed the Los Angles area, ultimately ending near the intersection of Slauson Avenue and Telegraph Road in the Commerce area with the driver and front passenger jumping out of the vehicle — but not before three other passengers were dropped at two different points near Pico Rivera.

At one point, an officer with California Highway Patrol attempted a PIT maneuver, but failed to disable the vehicle.

After a brief foot chase, officers were able to take the driver and remaining passenger into custody in the Commerce area.

Police said one handgun was recovered.

At Least 70 Cars In Whittier Area Shot With BB Gun

WHITTIER (CBSLA) — At least 70 cars in Whittier were vandalized by someone apparently armed with a BB gun.

All across Whittier, police received dozens of reports of their car windows being shot out and shattered. Police say at least 50 cars were vandalized between 10 and 11:45 p.m. Thursday, with windows shot out on as many as six cars in a row on some streets.

Cars may have also been vandalized in neighboring La Habra and Pico Rivera, and authorities say they may get even more reports as people start going to work.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies are also investigating a report of two people shot with a BB gun on nearby Rockne Street. No one was seriously injured, but deputies will work with Whittier police to see if the incidents are related.

Witnesses told investigators the shots were fired by a man in a dark-colored Honda Civic. Officers are canvassing every area that was hit for security video.

‘I Was Just In Tears’: Friends Gather In Pico Rivera To Remember Teen Killed In Hit-And-Run

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) — Friends gathered Saturday afternoon to remember a 15-year-old boy who was killed in a hit-and-run in Pico Rivera.

The group placed flowers and candles near the site of the accident on Slauson Avenue and Paramount Boulevard.

The teen, Anthony Rojas Hernandez, was crossing the street Friday at the crosswalk when a truck crashed into him.

The teen was rushed to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

“I saw him there at the hospital, and I was just in tears,” Justin Villa, one of the teen’s friends, said. “It broke my heart. I’m devastated. I just lost my best friend, my brother.”

The driver of the truck left after hitting the teen. A man in his 50s was later found and arrested in connection with the crash.

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) — A 15-year-old riding a skateboard was killed Friday after being struck by a vehicle in Pico Rivera.

LAPD received a call of a collision on Slauson Avenue and Paramount Boulevard just after 3 p.m.

The driver allegedly fled the scene after striking the teen who was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to the injuries.

The vehicle involved was recovered blocks away from the collision and the driver was later arrested.

The intersection was closed while police investigated.

1 Dead, Woman Seriously Burned In Fire At Pico Rivera Strip Mall

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) — A fire at a Pico Rivera strip mall left one person dead and a woman with serious burns in critical condition Thursday.

The fire broke out at Top Line Nails, 9302 Whittier Blvd., at about 8 p.m. Wednesday night. Firefighters say the fire started in the attic area, which had been reportedly been used as an employee area where business operations were being handled.

When firefighters arrived, the attic was engulfed in heavy flames. Neighboring stores were damaged, but the fire was put out after 9 p.m.

A body was found in the attic. One woman with serious burns to over 30 percent of her body was taken to a hospital in critical condition, while another man and a firefighter suffered serious injuries.

The man who was killed has not yet been identified, but authorities say the woman who was burned was one of the owners.

Neighbors and friends said the nail salon was a family-owned business run by a couple and their son.

The city manager says a chemical spill caused the fire. A candle is also being investigated as a contributor to the fire.

PETA To The Rescue: Tabby Cat Stuck In Palm Tree Back Home After 13 Days

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) — Mikey the cat made the mistake of a lifetime when he climbed a nearly 100-foot tall palm tree in Pico Rivera two weeks ago.

The orange tabby was stuck in the fronds of the tree on Rosemead Boulevard for nearly two weeks after local agencies — the fire department, sheriff’s department and animal control — could not find a ladder tall enough to reach the top of the tree.

But on Monday night, Mikey’s ordeal finally came to an end after a crane operator, hired by PETA and Miles Burkart from the city’s special mobile animal rescue team, attempted to pluck the feline from the tree. Mikey jumped out of the tree and landed on a series of nets placed below the tree to break his fall before running off.

Mikey’s owner later found the scared cat and was able to bring him back home for some much needed love and care.

“This exhausted little indoor cat slipped out by accident and endured a terrifying experience, which thankfully ended with his safe return to his loving guardian,” says PETA Senior Director of Cruelty Casework Stephanie Bell. “PETA urges everyone always to keep an eye out for animals in need and never to leave them to fend for themselves.”

PETA covered the $4,000 cost of the crane and the licensed operator to rescue the cat.

Dozens Of Families Tearfully Reunite In Pico Rivera After Decades Apart

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) — The tears flowed in Pico Rivera Friday when dozens of families were reunited after decades apart.

CBS2/KCAL9 reporter Randy Paige was there.

The sons and daughters, parents and grandchildren were also there — waiting for a moment many thought would never come.

Fifty families got to hug and reminisce and some got to meet family they’ve only heard about.

The older men and women were granted a temporary humanitarian visa — many traveled from deep inside Mexico to come to the United States to see their children. Many of the reunions were 20 years in the making.

“Now I’m going to get that moment,” says Nelson Martinez.

The last time he saw his grandmother he was less than a year old.

Paige asked what was going through his mind.

“Excitement,the sadness, excitement,” he says.

Then one by one, they took the last few steps and fell into each others arms.

Sobs echoed the years of separation.

“I really feel good, really happy,” says Nelson’s mother, Arecely Gonzalez . “It’s hard growing up here without my parents, a lot of years alone with my children. But they’re here now, thank God.”

Tears flowed across the generations.

“Oh my kids are here after so many years,” Nelson’s grandmother says. and she thanked everyone for making this day possible.

Moments later, Abela Yocupicio saw her granddaughter for the first time.

Nearby, the story was repeated over and over. Unfortunately, the reunions will be short-lived.

The temporary visa only allow the older folks to stay for a few weeks. In a few weeks, they will be driven back to the airport for the trip back to Mexico.

But, at a time when we are more used to seeing heartbreaking images of immigrant families being torn apart, we can watch — for a brief moment — here in East Los Angeles, families once separated by thousands of miles together again.

Car Overturns After Striking Light Pole, Fire Hydrant Following Pico Rivera Crash

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) — A Thursday night accident in Pico Rivera took out a light pole and struck a fire hydrant, causing a geyser of water to flow into the street.

According to police, the three-car accident happened just after 9 p.m. at the intersection of East Whittier and Rosemead boulevards. Police said a woman driving a 2011 Toyota Corolla headed southbound on Rosemead Boulevard ran a red light and crashed into two vehicles that were traveling westbound on Whittier Boulevard.

The Corolla then flipped a few times before striking a vehicle that was coming out of the Target parking lot. The vehicle then struck a light pole and a fire hydrant — unleashing a geyser of water — before coming to a stop on the roof with the driver trapped in the vehicle.

Firefighters were able to extricate the woman from the vehicle. She was taken to the hospital and was said to be in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.

The drivers and passengers of the other vehicles involved in the accident were said to be in stable condition, also with non-life threatening injuries.

Detectives Reopen Investigation Into 1999 Cold Case Murder Of Anaheim Teen Mariana Tapia

ANAHEIM (CBSLA) – Authorities announced Tuesday that they have reopened the investigation into the shooting death of an 18-year-old girl exactly 20 years ago.

According to Anaheim police, Mariana Tapia went missing on July 2, 1999, after attending a birthday party at El Rodeo nightclub in the city of Pico Rivera in Los Angeles County. She was last seen dancing in the club with some unknown men.

Her decomposed body was found about seven weeks later, on Aug. 22, 1999, in a brush area near Gypsum Canyon and Santa Ana Canyon roads in Anaheim, police said.

She was discovered with one foot protruding out of a shallow grave by an employee with the Irvine Company who was inspecting a fence on the company’s property.

She died of at least one gunshot wound, police said. She had a 4-year-old daughter at the time of her death.

Authorities have not released a possible motive in her killing.

Homicide detectives have been examining DNA and ballistic evidence. Police also say they are also hoping to speak to a woman who came forward with very specific information about Tapia’s death back in early 2000.

“Early in the year 2000, a woman called detectives and provided specific information about Mariana’s murder,” Anaheim police homicide detail Sgt. Jeff Mundy said in a statement. “We are asking this woman to have the courage to call us again so we can bring justice to Mariana and closure to her family.”

75th Anniversary Of D-Day Brings Memories Back For Local Veteran

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) — The anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy — more commonly known as D-Day — happened 75 years ago tomorrow.

Today, here and abroad, there were many remembrances as a walk-up to that historic day.

It was, reports CBS2/KCAL9’s Joy Benedict, a remembrance for for legends.

Bot for Arthur Valenzuela, he didn’t need a reminder of what happened that day. Because he lived it.

“We landed there behind enemy lines,” he says.

Valenzuela flew into Normandy on a military glider.

“A glider is a plane that has no motor,” he explains. “The pilot would try and stop the glider, he would hit a tree or anything — so we could get out right away.”

On D-Day he landed in a field.

“When we land, [we] run for cover the Germans all over,” he recalls.

The battle in Normandy lasted 30 days and nights but this veteran mostly remembers the nights.

“Oh, the rain,” Valenzuela recalls, “Raining. and it was cold. God, you’d just kneel down and cover up whenever you can.”

At 96 years old, some of the details of his time in Normandy are now lost. He doesn’t even remember how many days he was there. But he does remember how he got out.

“We ran back for cover and I got hit. I went down,” he says.

Valenzuela was lucky to be alive.

“Medics were carrying me out of there you know, and I remember the artillery bombs all around and telling the medics to leave me alone — for them to run for cover.”

But they wouldn’t leave his side.

“I’m telling you they were brave,” he says.

Valenzuela was shot in the back and earned a Purple Heart. He shows off the hardware of his military life including a Parachute Badge.

Decades later that hardware sits proudly on the mantle of his Pico Riviera home — a reminder of the past and the epic fight.

“I was fighting for my country, fighting for my family,” Valenzuela says.

And fighting for the freedom we’ve held, and enjoyed, for 75 years.

Man Dead After Double Stabbing In Pico Rivera

PICO RIVERA (CBSLA) — Two men were stabbed, one fatally, near the San Gabriel riverbed in Pico Rivera early Tuesday.

Deputies were sent out to a plant nursery in the 9900 block of La Docena Lane at 1:48 a.m. and found the victims, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Trace Koerner said.

One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene. The second man was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

Investigators say there was apparently a fight between several men at the location just before the stabbing, and two men were seen running south from the scene.

A weapon has not yet been found.

The nursery, located along the riverbed parallel to the 605 Freeway near Telegraph Road, is a frequent target of taggers. It’s not yet clear whether the stabbing was connected to tagging, or a gang-related incident.

LA County Supervisors Approve $14M Settlement For Family Of Man Mistakenly Killed By Sheriff’s Deputy

STUDIO CITY (CBSLA) — The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved the $14.35 million settlement reached earlier this year with the family of a man mistakenly killed by a deputy during a standoff.

The money will be given to the widow, mother and children of Frank Mendoza, who was killed in August 2014 just outside his Pico Rivera home. L.A. County Sheriff’s deputies had descended on the home in search of armed parolee Cedric Ramirez, who had shot at deputies before hiding behind Mendoza’s home on the 9000 block of Rosehedge Drive. Deputies entered the home looking for Ramirez to find the Mendoza, his wife and two children inside, but they exited without telling the family how to leave.

Ramirez ended up coming into the home and taking Mendoza’s wife Lorraine Munoz hostage, it was reported at the time. As the 54-year-old grandfather tried to exit through his front door, a deputy shot him in the head and leg, killing him.

The family’s attorney, Garo Mardirossian, said the settlement is a record for the county. In May, the county agreed to pay nearly $12 million to the wife a man stuck and killed by a cruiser while the deputy was texting.

The deputy who killed Mendoza is still employed by LASD but is not assigned to field duty.
