Kendy Hess Appointed Senior Research Fellow at Oxford

CU Philosophy alumna Kendy Hess has been offered a Senior Research Fellowship at the University of Oxford for the 2024-25 academic year. Kendy (who is currently Brake Smith Professor of Social Philosophy and Ethics College of the Holy Cross) graduated from the PhD program in 2008. She wrote a dissertation on the ontological status of corporate entities under the supervision of Professor Graham Oddie.

New Books by Emeritus Professor Paul W. Kroll

Emeritus Professor Paul W. Kroll has published a new book, The Poetry of Meng Haoran, in De Gruyter's Library of Chinese Humanities series. This is the first complete translation into any language of all of the poetry of Meng Haoran (689-740), one of the most famous poets of the Tang dynasty. Like other books in the series, it includes the original Chinese text, with the translation on facing pages, plus additional notes. It is also available online as an Open Access searchable file. Last fall Prof. Kroll published "At the Shores of the Sky": Asian Studies for Albert Hoffstädt, which he and Prof. Jonathan Silk of the University of Leiden co-edited in honor of the person who has been for twenty-five years the chief acquisitions editor for Asian Studies at Brill Publishers. The book includes essays by twenty-two contributors on various aspects of Chinese, Indic, and Japanese studies, including Prof. Kroll's essay, "On Some Verses of Li Bo." Later this year a revised and expanded third edition of Prof. Kroll's Student's Dictionary of Classical and Medieval Chinese will be published by Brill.

Antje Richter To Be President of Early Medieval China Group

Antje Richter, Associate Professor of Chinese, is the current president of the Early Medieval China Group. The Early Medieval China Group was established to promote the communications between scholars who focus on the Early Medieval period in East Asia. The group publishes Early Medieval China, the only English language journal devoted exclusively to academic scholarship relating to the period roughly between the end of the Han and beginning of the Tang eras. Please check their website for details about membership, the journal, and their upcoming conference.

New Book: "My Heart Became a Bomb" a book of al-Asheq’s poetry translated into English by Levi Thompson

Levi Thompson, Assistant Professor of Arabic, was recently interviewed by the popular literary website ArabLit about his work translating the Syro-Palestinian poet Ramy al-Asheq, who now lives in Germany. You can read the interview, by Tugrul Mende, here. Ever Since I Did Not Die, a book of essays translated into English by Dr. Isis Nusair and edited by Professor Thompson, will appear soon with the Arab List at Seagull Books (preorder here). My Heart Became a Bomb, a book of al-Asheq’s poetry translated into English by Dr. Thompson, will come out with the University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies Press in January 2021 and is also now available for preor der.

HIND 3851 Advanced Language Co-Seminar with Rahul Parson

I love the seminar because Rahul is incredibly knowledgeable about Bhakti and South Asia, so it gives me an opportunity to go more in depth into different topics. I am also learning about the progression of the Hindi language and the languages that preceded it which is fascinating to me. I like the small group setting as well. It allows us the flexibility to study and read different works according to what we are interested in.

Mimi Eshleman is one of the three students who are taking the one-credit Advanced Language Co-Seminar (ASIA 4001) this Spring 2020 with Rahul Parson, Assistant Professor of Hindi/Urdu. This course is associated with the main course, HIND 3851 Devotional Literature in South Asia, which introduces students to the rich heritage of devotional literature in pre- and early modern South Asia, often referred to as Bhakti. In this seminar, students have an opportunity to read texts in its original language. "I knew I wanted to take the Bhakti course with Rahul and this seminar was a way to push the boundaries of my Hindi learning and learn more about the culture of South Asia," said Eshleman.

Joseph Archer took the seminar in Fall 2018 with Parson while enrolled in HIND 3811 The Power of the Word: Subversive and Censored Twentieth Century Indo-Pakistani Literature. In Fall 2019, he studied abroad in Jaipur and further advanced his Hindi. Because he enjoyed the last seminar, he decided to enroll again this semester.

Students interested in the seminar should enroll in Hindi/Urdu language courses since intermediate or higher Hindi is required.

HIND 3811 The Power of the Word: Subversive and Censored 20th Century Indo-Pakistani Literature
Provides an overview of a selection of writings by important 20th century Indo-Pakistani authors, which will permit students to get acquainted with Indian literature. Provides insight into the experience of social and political events in the 20th century and the reaction of the government to the critical analysis and portrayal of these events. Taught in English. Approved for arts and sciences core curriculum: human diversity.

HIND 3851 Devotional Literature in South Asia
Focuses on the medieval and modern periods (1200-present), and the languages of North India and Pakistan (Hindi, Urdu, Panjabi). Students engage with English translations of works by Tulsidas, Surdas, Kabir, Mirabai, Nanak, Khusrau, Ghalib, Anis and Iqbal. Recurring themes include issues of authorship and interpretation; religious and aesthetic encounter; and the legacy of these traditions in modern South Asian society and literature. Taught in English. Approved for arts and sciences core curriculum: literature and the arts.
