Refresh rate is the monitor’s key specification. Most monitors at 32 inches have a refresh rate of 60Hz to 165Hz. The Odyssey G7 significantly improves on this with its 240Hz refresh rate. Samsung manages to deliver this increased refresh rate without compromising on motion clarity.

On the contrary, the Odyssey G7 delivers some of the best overall motion clarity of any 32-inch monitor we tested, though it’s bested by OLED panels. This adds up to a smooth, responsive gaming experience with minimal motion blur, but to hit these high frame speeds at this resolution, you’ll need a top-of-the-line graphics card

Price is another key reason to choose the Odyssey G7, as we’ve seen it drop to under $500 on sale—that’s a steal.

Image quality is great, as well. The monitor has a wide color gamut, good color accuracy, and a slightly above-average contrast ratio. It looks vibrant in most titles and provides added detail to dark scenes.

The monitor is VESA DisplayHDR 600 certified, so it can add punch to bright scenes in HDR-compatible games. However, its overall HDR performance is mediocre compared to a similarly priced television.

Gamers craving a flashy monitor will like the Odyssey G7’s design. The rear panel and stand mount seem inspired by a jet fighter and the aggressive curve stands out from other, less dramatic displays. However, those who don’t like a curved gaming monitor may find the G7 too extreme. The Dell S3222DGM is an affordable gaming monitor with 1440p resolution, a VA panel, and a 165Hz refresh rate. It delivers good image quality for the price and easily crowds out competitors to secure our top value pick.

This monitor’s strengths are its contrast ratio and uniformity in dark scenes. Its contrast is just shy of competitors like the BenQ EX3203R and Acer Nitro XZ322QU. Where Dell takes the lead is luminance uniformity, with fewer bright spots along the edges of the monitor. That’s great if you enjoy games that frequently show dark scenes.

Color performance is solid. The S3222DGM has good color accuracy and a reasonably wide color gamut, though it’s not wide enough to be considered a wide-gamut display. It lacks the vibrant, punchy look of BenQ’s EX3203R, but its overall performance is good for the price. The monitor does not support HDR but it’s very bright in SDR content.

Dell has settled on a simple, robust design for its affordable gaming monitors. It’s not attractive but it feels solid in hand. The sturdy stand keeps the monitor stable. However, it only adjusts for height and tilt. This is a curved monitor, but the curve is subtle enough that it doesn’t have a significant impact on gaming or day-to-day use.

The Alienware AW3225QF leads the pack thanks to its third-generation QD-OLED panel.

Best OLED 32-inch Monitor

Alienware AW3225QF

Alienware was the first to market with Samsung’s third-generation QD-OLED panels for gaming monitors, and the results are phenomenal. The Alienware AW3225QF doesn’t compromise in any aspect. It’s a 4K, 32-inch OLED gaming monitor that can hit 240Hz.

The nearly-perfect black levels and instant pixel refresh times that all OLED displays offer are on display here, but Dell didn’t neglect the quality-of-life features that even less expensive IPS monitors often feature, including ample USB ports.

Color reproduction, gamut, and accuracy are fantastic. After calibration, we measured an average DeltaE value—the difference between a target value and what’s actually measured—at only 0.57, which is virtually perfect and good enough for color-sensitive creative work. Games and movies are vibrant and realistic. Even browsing the web or editing photos looks leaps and bounds better than on an IPS or VA panel.

That effect is further enhanced when HDR is turned on. Shadows are appropriately moody and retain detail thanks to the effectively infinite contrast ratio, and highlights get just as bright as you’d expect from a monitor this expensive. To top it off, HDR on the AW3225QF is astoundingly color-accurate; we measured an average DeltaE of only 0.93 with it enabled. It’s accurate and bright enough to leave on even when not gaming. The AW3225QF is also the only monitor of its kind with Dolby Vision support and even has an eARC port for soundbars.

The secret sauce includes the features you can use every day, even while working. It can easily push a uniform 220-plus nits even when an all-white screen is displayed, making it bright enough to write and fill out spreadsheets on. Switching between brighter and darker objects doesn’t cause rapid dimming or brightening like with other OLED displays, and the port selection and OSD menus are plentiful and easy to use.

Combined with excellent viewing angles and a curve so gentle that it’s easy to forget it exists, the AW3225QF is an all-around winner. The MSI MPG 321URX QD-OLED uses a flat version of the same panel for only $950, but it’s also hard to find in stock.

The Leesa Sapira offers unparalleled motion isolation, effective cooling performance, and excellent comfort. It has an optimal balance of cushioning foam layers and supportive pocket springs, so it should be comfortable for back, front, and side sleepers.

The secret to the Sapira’s success is based on the materials used and the overall construction of the mattress. The top two soft foam layers contour to the body to effectively relieve pressure and help keep the sleeper cool. Below the foam, the pocket springs in the base layer give the bed a sturdy but buoyant feel while minimizing motion transfer.

The sum of this hybrid bed’s parts is enough give to relieve pressure points for side and back sleepers, but enough support for back and stomach sleepers. That fact alone drove it to the top of our list.

Our only ongoing complaint with the ordering process is that you have to pay close attention to your email, or schedule your own reminder, so you don't miss the deadline to customize your order each week. If you do miss it, HelloFresh sends you its selections for you according to the preferences you set in your account.

If you set those preferences with intent, you should always get meals you'll like, but it's still nice to tailor your selections to your mood or plans for the week.

Its packaging is some of the most sustainable on this list in that it’s largely recyclable, which is a plus. We love the clearly labeled, recyclable paper packaging used to contain each meal. But you'll still have to dispose of the large ice packs and cardboard boxes each week.

The valuable convenience of most meal kit delivery services come at a price—but not at Dinnerly. This meal kit service offers meals that start at just $4.99 each, which is less than half the price of most competitors.

But cutting down on price doesn't mean cutting down on quality. When we tested Dinnerly, we were taken aback by the flavor and portion sizes of each meal. Dishes with global flair like chicken satay and Moroccan-spiced chicken soup felt akin to ordering takeout from an international restaurant.

Better yet, Dinnerly is devoted to simple, fuss-free prep. That means every recipe has just five steps or less, and uses minimal pots and pans so post-dinner clean-up is a breeze. And a lot of the dishes we tested were actually ready faster than the estimated recipe time.

There are a few minor downsides we found, though, like disorganized packaging and fewer included ingredients. The ingredients are not organized according to each recipe, which means you'll have to sift through a pile of produce and packaged spices before cooking each meal. Dinnerly also doesn't deliver printed recipe cards, so you'll have to refer back to your email as you cook.

We also found that you may need to have some staples on hand before your package gets delivered, like fresh garlic and apple cider vinegar. But don't worry: Dinnerly will send you a list of ingredients via email before the box arrives.

Despite these minor hiccups, we think Dinnerly delivers major value for the price, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a better meal delivery service with such excellent value.

Aside from classics like the farmhouse fried chicken with mashed potatoes, green onion gravy, and corn, Home Chef also offerings meals that are diverse enough to include healthy meal options.

It also accommodates almost any dietary preference, including vegetarians and vegans. The menu offers at least 25 dinner options per week, as well as a handful of oven-ready meals. There are also some lunch and snack choices as add-ons to its main menu.

What we love most about Home Chef is its organization. Ingredients are divided per meal into labeled bags that easily slide into the fridge, recipe instructions are consistently clear, and time estimates are always accurate. Plus, the website is easy to navigate, allowing you the freedom to choose what you want and skip delivery weeks at will.

One of its only downsides is the lack of variety on the weekly menu. We would describe most of Home Chef's recipes as American-style, with a few Italian or Mexican-inspired options each week. HelloFresh, on the other hand, offers a wide range of dishes with international flair every week, like Peruvian chicken and Indian-inspired curry. Home Chef would be also wise to incorporate more biodegradable packaging into its existing model.

The Disney+, Hulu, and Max bundle will allow you to purchase the three streaming services for a cheaper price than you would if you bought each individually. Disney+ and Hulu have existing bundles — the Disney+ and Hulu bundles, and the Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ bundles. Since the bundle will include both Disney+ and Hulu, you’ll be able to watch Hulu content on Disney+ itself.

The Disney+ and Hulu duo bundle is $9.99 a month with ads or $19.99 without. The Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ trio bundle is $15.99 with ads or $25.99 without.

Disney+ and Hulu alone are $7.99 a month each for their ad-free plans while Disney+ and Hulu without ads are $13.99 and $17.99 a month, respectively.

With ads, Max is 9.99 a month. Without ads, it’s $15.99 a month.

Based on this, we guess that the new bundle may go for as low as $19.99 a month with ads or $39.99 without. If you don’t want to get your hopes up too much, you can add $5 to our estimate.

And if you get it wrong, we’ll treat you to some great deals. Kidding! We’d do that anyway.

When can we expect this streaming bundle to be available?

There’s currently no word on when the streaming bundle will be available. While it would be great for the bundle to roll out this summer, we’d imagine Disney would be more forthright with details if it was releasing so soon. Either way, we’d be surprised if the bundle isn’t released by the end of the year.

Tangled is a fun, family-friendly movie, but it’s a terrible state for a preschooler’s hair. We have pushed through many knots, tangles, and tearful hairstyling sessions until I, much like my daughter’s split ends, broke. That's when we decided to improve our approach to hair care and find the best detangler for kids.

We checked out nine of the best detanglers for kids in the hopes of smoothing my daughter’s hair without a meltdown. The best detangler for kids that had the least resistance and most impressive results was the Totlogic Kids Detangler Spray and Leave-In Conditioner (available at Walmart for $16.95) . It takes out tangles without leaving a significant amount of residue and has a pleasant scent to boot.

To help you pick the best detangler for kids, we did some testing. Based on our research, we found these to be the best detangler for kids available right now.

TotLogic Leave-In Conditioning Spray

It’s always the unassuming ones. This detangler for kids wouldn’t jump out to me on the shelves, but despite the label, Totlogic packs the perfect punch in each spray. The fact that this is a detangler for kids and a leave-in conditioner spray combo is also a plus. A conditioning detangler for kids is such a win!

I had to use a decent amount of the lightweight formula on her locks, but this detangler for kids left her hair soft and manageable. Her hair after using this detangler for kids was shiny and smooth, and there was no residue.

The lavender smell of this detangler for kids was subtle, and it might’ve been the essence that actually calmed my child and made the whole experience reasonable. I was hoping to say enjoyable, but I don’t think any hair brushing will ever be enjoyable, no matter how great the detangler for kids is.

I also liked that this Totlogic detangler for kids doesn't contain any harsh chemicals—it's sulfate, paraben, and phthalate free—so I wasn't super worried about spraying this detangler for kids near my child's face and mouth.

The only downside to this detangler for kids is that the bottle says not to use it on dry hair, so this detangler for kids is not ideal if your child is usually in need of last minute, before-rushing-out-the-door detangling sessions.

Honest Conditioning Detangler

The Honest Company detangler for kids has the best scent of all of the detanglers for kids that we tested. However, the spray is pointed, and you do have to use a pretty large amount on the tangled hair to make this detangler for kids useful.

I got a smaller bottle, which I feel like would run out quickly, and it can be pricey if you have to use a lot of it. This detangler for kids worked fine on wet hair, but the amount I had to use on dry hair—plus its lack of effectiveness on knots—made the Honest detangler for kids disappointing. Once this detangler for kids dried, though, I loved the wonderful sweet orange vanilla smell.

For starters, this is the only straw cup for toddlers that didn’t exude any liquid during our drop tests, nor did it leak when left on its side for over 12 hours. This straw cup for toddlers also survived more than a few significant tosses from my toddler without a single drop of liquid escaping. As lame and unexciting as it makes me sound, I was actually sad to stop using this cup during the testing process because of how well it worked.

The six-ounce straw cup for toddlers also has many appealing features that both parents and kids alike will appreciate. The OXO Tot Transitions Straw Cup for toddlers has removable handles that don’t slide around during use, and there are measurement marks on the exterior of the cup, so you can easily keep track of how much your toddler is drinking.

Another perk? The straw comes in two easy-to-clean pieces that are simple to take apart and wash. While this entire straw cup for toddlers and all its parts are dishwasher safe, I found that it was more effective (and required minimal time) to clean the straw parts with a small bristle brush.

Finally, another factor that set this straw cup for toddlers apart from other similar options we tested was the build quality. Some of the plastic cups we tested were easy to bend by squeezing the center. However, the OXO Tot Transitions Straw Cup for toddlers did not bow at all. The cup feels like it’s constructed of strong plastic, and if you’re looking for an eco-friendly option, this straw cup for toddlers is made without BPAs, phthalates, and PVC.

My only complaint about this straw cup for toddlers is that, at first, my son had a hard time figuring out how to make liquid flow from the straw. That's because the spill-proof straw doesn't dispense any liquid unless contracted—a win for parents who want to toss this in their purse or bag without worry.

Similar to the straw set up on the OXO Tot Transitions Straw Cup for toddlers, liquid only comes out of the Nuby No-Spill cup when pressure is applied to the straw. There were a few small leaks here and there when liquid pooled up in the upper portion of the straw, but overall, this 10-ounce straw cup for toddlers is a pretty safe bet if you're looking for an affordable straw cup for toddlers with minimal leaks.

We also loved the hourglass design, which is made from BPA-free plastic, as it makes it easy for little hands to grip and sip. To sum it all up: This straw cup for toddlers isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty dang close, especially for the money.

We tested a total of two stainless steel cups and the Pura Kiki won us over for several reasons. It’s thoroughly insulated, so you don’t have to worry about milk spoiling or water going warm after a few hours if you forget to put it in the refrigerator. The bottle features a soft, non-toxic silicone spout that’s gentle on developing palates.

This straw cup for toddlers is the most expensive one we've tested, but it's worth the $26 price tag if you're looking for a non-toxic, vacuum-insulated straw cup for toddlers that feels like it's going to last a while. The interior of the nine-ounce bottle features measuring marks, so you can keep tabs on how many ounces of liquid your toddler is consuming.

Despite being mostly made of stainless steel, it’s still lightweight enough for small toddlers to use with ease. One special feature we really liked is the exterior silicone sleeve that helps keep condensation at bay and helps keep the straw cup for toddlers from becoming dented when thrown on a hard surface.

The bottom portion suffered several dents during our drop tests, but Pura Kiki sells a bottom bumper for an additional cost.

Be warned, though, that this straw cup for toddlers will leak if you’re not careful. While no liquid managed to leak during our overnight tests, small amounts of liquid tended to gather in the top portion of the straw after my son took a drink. When he threw the bottle, the liquid left in the top portion of the straw sent more than a few droplets flying all over the room. The saving grace here is the stretchy food-grade silicone cover that’s easy to pull on and off. As long as that’s in place, you don’t have to worry about leaks.

Valve’s Steam Deck has dominated the handheld gaming PC scene since its launch, and the first major manufacturer has finally tossed its hat in the ring with the Asus ROG Ally.

It’s beautiful, powerful, and fairly priced, but is it enough to trounce the OG? The Ally’s strengths are perfect for games that need more power to run smoothly, but the Steam Deck is still a better value for those who want a pick-up-and-play experience that revolves around the Steam store. With the release of the Steam Deck OLED, that race just got a whole lot tighter.

(Note that we're comparing the Steam Deck to the $700 Z1 Extreme version of the ROG Ally, not the less powerful $600 Z1 model. That version should be avoided.)

Design and ergonomics

When you pick up the ROG Ally, you’ll notice it’s about an inch narrower and 0.3 pounds lighter than the Steam Deck. (608 grams for the Ally versus 669 grams for the Steam Deck LCD and 640 grams for the Steam Deck OLED.) They’re both a similar shape (a 7-inch screen between a game controller), use similar inputs, and have plenty of customizability options. Both have a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The ROG Ally’s textured white finish and shallower grips can’t beat the ergonomics of the Steam Deck. Although the Ally is a third-pound lighter and notably smaller, I found my hands cramping after an hour or two of use—on the Steam Deck, I’ve gone six hours or more before I begin to notice much discomfort. As a sufferer of small hands, I was surprised by the outcome.

The other major difference is the absence of trackpads on the ROG Ally. Many PC gamers have found the Steam Deck’s tiny mouse pads vital to strategy games and first-person shooters, where a mouse significantly improves the experience. Sure, they could be better, but at least they’re on the handheld. The ROG Ally does away with them, and instead the mouse is operated by the right joystick when in Desktop Mode.

The ROG Ally’s rear buttons are much more accessible and easy to trigger than the Steam Deck’s. The Ally has two extra rear buttons you can map to several desktop functions or keybinds (or create your own macro). When I hold either Steam Deck model, I have to stretch my hand and press hard to activate the four rear buttons, so they’re not very useful in games where timing matters.

However, the Steam Deck also has better gamepad buttons overall. The D-pad, the ABXY buttons, joysticks, bumpers, and the triggers have a heftier feel to them that’s satisfying without being overbearing. It reminds me of an Xbox controller.

Performance

Even when the Steam Deck was new on the market, it wasn’t an especially fast device. A year and change later, it feels downright sluggish compared to the ROG Ally. Its custom AMD Ryzen processor runs on older architecture than the ROG Ally’s, which means it gets worse performance for the same power draw.

At the Steam Deck’s native 800p resolution, exceptionally demanding games like Final Fantasy VII Remake and Elden Ring have a tough time running at 30 frames per second (fps) or more unless you drop the settings or turn on FSR, AMD’s upscaling tool.

Even the newer Steam Deck OLED, which uses a smaller, more efficient 6nm processor and faster RAM, is only about 10% more powerful than the original Deck. It’s a minor improvement.

The ROG Ally runs on a 6-core, 12-thread AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip, a tweaked version of the Ryzen 7840U mobile processor in architecture and performance. When we tested Elden Ring on the Ally for our review, the Ally was easily able to hold 30 fps at 1080p resolution and 60 fps at 720p resolution with high graphics presets. Cyberpunk 2077 runs similarly well.

If you’re bothered by fan noise, you’ll gravitate towards the ROG Ally. The Ally’s dual-fan cooling system runs quieter and cooler than the Steam Deck’s single fan cooling system (though the Steam Deck OLED is just as quiet thanks to the rejiggered cooling solution). Neither console is gratingly loud, but the Ally’s relatively silent operation is a godsend for low-volume audio usage.

Battery Life and Power Usage

The Steam Deck’s greatest setback is also its secret weapon; the less powerful processor draws less power than the Ally’s. If a device demands more power, the device will also have a shorter battery life, and both handhelds pack a 40WHr battery. With the Steam Deck OLED’s 50WHr battery, it pulls even further ahead of the Ally.

The Steam Deck’s ultra low power draw is great for those who mostly play simple 2D games like Stardew Valley or visual novels, since you can get up to six hours of battery life using as little as 4 watts without missing out on performance. That jumps to over eight hours on the Steam Deck OLED.

When running at 15 watts, both the Steam Deck and the ROG Ally last about two hours off a full charge, with the Steam Deck OLED hitting about two and a half. Running games on the ROG Ally’s Silent mode will squeeze three hours of charge from the Ally’s battery.

The ROG Ally’s maximum 30 watt power draw is the obvious choice for big-budget, photorealistic 3D games that throw open worlds at players’ hardware like Horizon Zero Dawn, but you’ll be lucky to get a single hour’s worth of gameplay before running to a power outlet.

Price and Availability

The Steam Deck offers many different models that vary on your preferences and budget, but the Asus ROG Ally is not far out in price range from the best model offered by the former.

The Linux-based Steam Deck starts at $399, which is a steal for all it offers (and only $319 if you buy a refurbished model). This model comes with 256GB of internal storage on a 2230 PCI-e gen 3.0 NVMe drive, but it’s easy to upgrade yourself later on.

The $549 model bumps up to the 512GB Steam Deck OLED, and the top-line $649 OLED model comes with 1TB of storage, an anti-glare display, and an additional slim case. All models have 16GB of memory (5500MHz LPDDR5 for the LCD version and 6400MHz LPDDR5 for the OLED), a sturdy carrying case, and a charger.

Meanwhile, the Z1 Extreme ROG Ally is $700. However, that $150 goes far. Compared to the 512GB LCD Steam Deck, the ROG Ally has the same amount of storage and RAM (although the memory is faster), a significantly better display and speakers, and a Windows 11 Home Edition license. The carrying case is sold separately.

You can only buy the Steam Deck on Valve’s online Steam store. There are some Steam Deck display models in limited Asian retail stores, but most people will have to wait for the console to arrive before they can give it a test run.

The ROG Ally is a Best Buy exclusive, so you can try it before you buy in-store. That also means it’s available open-box and on sale for major holidays; we've seen the Z1 Extreme model marked down to $600, and the Z1 non-Extreme regularly sells for $400.

Display

You will be able to run most modern games at high settings with the Asus ROG Ally.

In every single way, the ROG Ally’s screen demolishes the original Steam Deck’s. The 1080p, 120Hz IPS display is bright, color accurate, and easy on the eyes. With up to 500 nits of brightness (enough to play in the bright sun) and coverage of 100% of the standard RGB color spectrum, everything looks phenomenal.

The Steam Deck’s display is best described as “fine.” The 800p, 60Hz IPS display isn’t notably blurrier than the Ally’s 1080p display thanks to the small screen dimensions on both devices, and the 60Hz refresh rate is enough to play games comfortably for most people. However, the Ally’s 120Hz screen feels so snappy and responsive that it’s hard to go back to the Deck.

While the Steam Deck is dimmer than the ROG Ally with a peak of 400 nits, those extra 100 nits only really make a difference in environments that tend to wash out your display. The Deck’s screen also has noticeably worse contrast and sRGB coverage that tops out at about 65%.

To me, the display is the Ally’s greatest improvement over the Steam Deck: it literally makes you a better gamer since you’re able to take in more information on-screen. Is this a touch dramatic? Sure. But I thank the 120Hz refresh rate and improved contrast for my better performance in Hades on the Ally compared to on the Steam Deck.

However, the race evens out once you factor in the Steam Deck OLED. The 7.4-inch, 90Hz OLED screen can hit up to 600 nits in SDR with 100% of the sRGB color space, and a blinding 1,000 nits when HDR is enabled. That’s right, the Steam Deck OLED is the only gaming handheld capable of displaying HDR content, and when games support it, games feel much more lifelike. Shadows become more nuanced, and colors are even more lifelike than before.

Windows 11 vs SteamOS

In many ways, the operating system is the most divisive talking point of the Steam Deck vs. ROG Ally faceoff. To some, Windows 11 is a blessing. To others (like me), it’s a curse. Windows and Steam’s custom Linux OS each have their pros and cons.

Out of the box, the Steam Deck does not run Windows. It runs SteamOS, a branch of Linux that Steam developed in-house for the Steam Deck. The base of the experience lies in Steam’s Big Picture Mode, which has been expanded and refined into a games-first menu to greet you when you turn it on. And that makes sense—put games at the center of a gaming device’s experience, just like PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo.

Accessing games from your Steam library on SteamOS is painless. You can scroll through games you own, browse Steam’s massive storefront, and organize non-Steam games in your library. If you need to get to some root files or want to try installing a custom mod, you can do that easily by switching SteamOS into Desktop Mode by clicking through the Power Menu.

Valve catalogs its entire storefront to determine if each game is playable on the Steam Deck without any troubleshooting from a casual Steam Deck user. Verified games are guaranteed to work flawlessly with the Steam Deck’s layout.

Windows 11 is a lot more appealing for games not available on Steam. Most titles run without issue on SteamOS, but games with DRM, anti-cheat software like Denuvo, and games with independent launchers like EA Origin have been a sore spot for some.

That won’t be a problem when you’re running Windows on the ROG Ally. But I wouldn’t call this a strict pro for the ROG Ally—you can install Windows 11 to run on the Steam Deck, too. They’re both mobile computers at their core.

The problem with Windows 11 on the ROG Ally is the same problem Windows has with tablets and 2-in-1s: the OS was not designed with touch screens at the forefront of the user experience. Asus counteracted this with Armory Crate, software that acts as a hub similar to Steam’s Big Picture Mode for controlling the device and how it interacts with different games and services. It feels like a SteamOS imitator, but once you leave Armory Crate, you’re back to Windows 11.

There is no clear winner between a handheld running SteamOS and a handheld running Windows. Windows 11 makes more sense for those who own a large library of non-Steam games or depend heavily on Xbox Game Pass and similar services. SteamOS is for people who want to stick to simplicity and unify their gaming with the Steam ecosystem.

Accessories and repairability

There's something to improve your experience with both handhelds.

I love the included Steam Deck case more than I thought I would. It’s sturdy, smooth, sleek, and convenient. I am a little miffed that the ROG Ally doesn’t come with a case, but in fairness neither does the Nintendo Switch, so I can’t dock points for that.

Both devices have great peripherals. The Steam Deck Dock and the ROG Ally’s hybrid HDMI 2.0 dock and 65-watt charger both work well with their respective devices.

Keyboards, mice, Bluetooth devices, and almost everything else you’d expect to work on a laptop or desktop work without issue. Both have slots for a microSD card, too. Nearly everything that works on the Steam Deck LCD will fit and work on the Steam Deck OLED.

If you find your Ally doesn’t have enough graphics power for your needs, you can connect it with an external laptop GPU and get desktop-grade performance. You can’t do that with the Steam Deck. The only issue with Asus’s eGPU enclosures is their cost, with the (mobile) Nvidia RTX 4090 version costing $2,000.

For maintenance and repair, the Steam Deck and the ROG Ally are just as easy to take apart. Most hardware components like the storage and thumbsticks are modular. Replacing the SSD, fans, and other parts is simple enough. The Steam Deck currently has more custom parts available from first- and approved third-party manufacturers, but that could change in the future.

And the winner is… a tie

Despite how similar the Steam Deck and Asus ROG Ally Z1 Extreme seem, there is no clear winner between the two. Both consoles are great but the Steam Deck is up to $400 cheaper, making it the better choice for most gamers.

It’s powerful enough to run most modern big-budget games at 800p, simple to navigate with its custom operating system, comfortable enough to hold for hours on end, and cheap enough to compete with the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S for affordability.

However, Asus’s $700 ROG Ally is only $51 more expensive than the top-end Steam Deck and offers major quality-of-life improvements like a 1080p display with a higher refresh rate, audio as good as a MacBook Pro, and significantly more power than either Steam Deck. It also comes with Windows 11 preinstalled, which could provide an extra layer of flexibility that gamers with libraries across the Epic Games Store, GOG, Origin, or Xbox Game Pass could take advantage of.

The ROG Ally and Steam Deck are not your only options for a PC gaming handheld, either, but if you’re trying to decide between the two, it will come down to personal preference.
