Contractor Spotlight—Christopher Hamilton: Plumbing with Purpose

After leaving the Army, Christopher Hamilton, owner/operator of Patriot’s Plumbing, Rocky Mount, Va., floated around doing odd jobs before finally finding his place in the trades. Hamilton worked some odd jobs at the Home Depot to Ace Hardware, for example, and even dabbled in some college courses in public speaking and criminal justice, and child psychology because he was curious about how the human mind develops at a young age and how people think and learn.

Yet, Hamilton realized he wanted to apply his skills to something hands on in the real world. After working briefly for a company that handled groundwork and excavations, Hamilton discovered that he enjoyed the challenges of plumbing and the satisfaction of solving practical problems. “Looking back now, I wish I’d joined the field sooner. There’s something deeply rewarding about building and repairing things that have a direct, tangible impact on people’s lives,” says Hamilton.

The Journey

Hamilton’s plumbing journey began in 2018 with a large, multi-trade company, which included mechanical, plumbing, HVAC and electrical work, where he started in the company’s Journeyman’s program, earning his Journeyman’s card along with an ASSE 6010 Medical Gas Systems Installer certification. While doing this, he also went to college to earn certifications for STICK, MIG and TIG welding, with a 2G position certification in both flat and vertical. “After completing the Journeyman’s program, I held my Journeyman card for one year, I then applied for and passed the Master Plumber’s test on my first attempt,” says Hamilton.

That brings Hamilton to where he is today. Master plumber, owner and operator of Patriot’s Plumbing LLC, which specializes in medical gas installation, and most everything that relates to pipes, plumbing and mechanical piping. “If it has pipes, I’ll work on it,” says Hamilton. Into less than one year of owning Patriot’s, the push to start his own business came from a desire for freedom, the freedom to make better choices for both customers and himself. Over time, Hamilton grew frustrated by poor organization, inefficiency and unrealistic job schedules that affected the quality of work. “I wanted to build something that emphasized integrity, reliability and service; a business where both my customers and I could take pride in the work being done,” says Hamilton.

The military helped instill some of the qualities needed to run a successful business, which included discipline, punctuality, accountability and organization. “If you’re on time, you’re already late, so I always make it a point to arrive early and prepared. Oh, and if f your tools and truck are a mess, your workday will be too,” says Hamilton.

Workforce Attraction

How can the plumbing industry do a better job attracting more people to the trades? According to Hamilton, it’s challenging to attract people because of the current perception of work. People think of hard, laborious days for low entry level pay, which can be true initially. For example, says Hamilton, in Virginia an apprentice plumber might range from $16 to $26 dollars per hour, depending on location.

“We need to focus on what tradespeople can become, not just what they are when they start. The fact is, tradespeople who are self-sufficient and own their businesses are often financially successful. People don’t realize the crucial role we play. A plumber doesn’t just install a toilet; they also maintain life-saving equipment like medical gas lines, oxygen lines and vacuum pumps for hospitals. We need to reframe the conversation around the essential, crisis-level work we do,” says Hamilton.

Giving great advice, Hamilton says for those thinking about it, “Get in early, push to be the best, learn as much as you can, and apply for every certification you’re eligible for. Don’t wait or let up. Money is infinite, time is limited. Once you start your trade, commit to it, find something you are good at, and hammer down on it,” says Hamilton.

Work/Life Balance

After working nonstop, Hamilton has learned how important it is to make time to rest. “I’ll admit, it’s still something I struggle with because I’m the kind of person who always says ‘yes’ and enjoys taking on new challenges. However, I also am learning to be more intentional about setting aside time to recharge and enjoy my family.”

Currently, he is the full-time, fill-in dad for two boys, ages five and six. “Neither parent is involved in their lives, and those boys have become one of the most important parts of my life. While it’s brought challenges and stress, it’s also been a huge motivator, driving me to build something bigger. I strive to give them a better life and maybe one day this business could turn into something great that they would want to take over,” says Hamilton.

And while Hamilton enjoys the outdoors and exploring places he hasn’t been before, he also likes playing the guitar, working on vehicles and building things, pretty much anything hands on. His bigger ticket, bucket items include traveling to Africa, England and Scotland. “I’m also fascinated by the idea of taking plumbing-related trips—visiting tool companies and manufacturers to see how tools and plumbing supplies are designed and made. The behind the scenes process really interests me,” says Hamilton.

Furthermore, to keep that work/life balance in check, Hamilton is a big proponent of staying healthy, saying that physical health goes hand in hand with mental health. If you eat poorly and neglect your body, he says, you’ll feel sluggish and unmotivated. The key is consistency. Take care of yourself a little more each day, and over time you’ll feel stronger, clearer, and more balanced both mentally and physically. “A cloudy mind makes mistakes; it is important to keep your thoughts in check and that no matter what happens, the sun will rise and set. Each day brings a new opportunity,” says Hamilton.

In the end, what Hamilton finds fulfilling from the trades is that he can find that the different situations on jobs call for a special type of critical thinking and problem solving. He enjoys figuring something out that 10 other people looked at previously and gave up on, and it’s rewarding when you can step back, look at what you put together and watch it function properly. “This trade is extremely satisfying knowing you performed the work and one day when you have retired there will be someone new in the trade that will look at the work you put together and know that someone put in quality work,” says Hamilton.

Finally, what will you find on Hamilton’s playlist? Well, he’s going old school with a mix of classic rock and easygoing tunes, and when he’s in the mood to clear his mind or unwind, he’ll usually put on Gordon Lightfoot-songs like “Early Morning Rain,” “Summer Side of Life,” and “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”

And, of course, we end with the last time he said today was a great day, “I was fishing with my two boys, and they both caught their first fish that day. That was a great day!”

PHCC Educational Foundation Awards Record Breaking Sixty-Six Students with $152,000 in Scholarships

The Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors—National Association (PHCC) Educational Foundation is proud to announce the winners of our 2025 scholarship program. With sixty-six students selected to receive scholarship awards, the Foundation has set a new milestone for the most scholarships it has ever awarded in a single year. These winners will receive funding totaling up to $152,000. Applicants must be plumbing or HVAC apprentices or trade school students, or college students pursuing studies directly related to the plumbing-heating-cooling industry.

Helping to boost the number of awards available this year were newly created scholarships sponsored by Home Depot Pro and by HomeServe as part of their broader Skilled Trades Initiative, aimed at strengthening and expanding the skilled labor force.

This year’s set of winners includes 43 apprentices and trade school students plus 23 college students. “We are so happy to provide these awards that make entering a career in the trades easier,” said Foundation Chair Patrick Wallner of Wallner Plumbing in Redding, Calif. “Our dedicated sponsors and donors are eager to support the program, because they know it is sound investment in the future of our profession.”

“Plumbing is not just a job for me—it is my career path, one that allows me to provide extraordinary service to clients and communities,” wrote apprentice Brian Hoisington of Westminster, Calif. in a thank you note to the Foundation donors. He is enrolled in the PHCC of Orange County plumbing apprenticeship training program. “I am an apprentice now advancing to the position of installer, and this scholarship will help me achieve that next step in my professional growth. Thank you for your commitment to supporting individuals like me in building a career that I can be proud of.”

Global Handwashing Day 2025 Underscores the Power of Soap and Water to Save Lives

Bradley celebrates the global advocacy event by highlighting the proven health benefits of handwashing

Each year, Global Handwashing Day shines a spotlight on one of the simplest and most effective public health practices: washing hands with soap and water. Celebrated annually on October 15, this worldwide event reminds people that consistent hand hygiene is critical to preventing the spread of infectious diseases and protecting community health.

According to the Global Handwashing Partnership, regular handwashing at key times – such as after using the restroom, before preparing food, or after caring for someone who is ill – can cut diarrheal disease nearly in half and reduce acute respiratory infections by almost a quarter. These benefits are especially important in protecting children under five, who are most vulnerable to preventable illnesses caused by unsafe hygiene practices.

Why Handwashing Matters More Than Ever

Medical experts emphasize that soap and water remain the gold standard for reducing the spread of germs that cause illnesses such as influenza and other common viruses. But when it comes to norovirus — one of the most contagious stomach bugs — handwashing is the only effective defense. Unlike alcohol-based hand sanitizers, which do not work against norovirus, vigorous washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds provides the friction and rinsing action needed to dislodge and flush away viral particles.

“Handwashing, using soap and warm water, is an easy and effective way to reduce the spread of disease-causing organisms like norovirus,” says medical microbiologist Michael P. McCann, Ph.D., professor emeritus, Saint Joseph’s University. “Given the ease with which some of these organisms can be spread on solid surfaces, in food, and by other means, handwashing is something that everyone should do after activities like using the restroom.”

What Bradley’s Healthy Handwashing Survey Reveals

For 16 years, Bradley’s Healthy Handwashing Survey has tracked Americans’ hand hygiene behaviors and attitudes. Findings from the 2025 survey reinforce both progress and challenges:

Americans value handwashing. 93% say it is important to maintaining their health.
Most wash after restroom use, but lapses remain. 81% always wash their hands after using a public restroom.
Soap use isn’t universal. While lathering is best, 45% admit to sometimes rinsing with only water – with men more likely than women to skip the soap.
Gender differences are clear. 85% of women report always washing their hands in public restrooms, compared with 77% of men. Women also take extra precautions to avoid germs, such as using paper towels to touch restroom surfaces.
Clean facilities matter. 84% say that an unkempt restroom negatively impacts their perception of a business, underscoring the importance of well-stocked, hygienic facilities that support handwashing.

A Call to Action for Global Handwashing Day

“This year’s theme, Clean Hands Are Within Reach, reinforces that handwashing is both a personal responsibility and a global health priority,” says Jon Dommisse, vice president of business development and strategy for Bradley. “Our survey confirms that people believe in the importance of handwashing, but they also need clean, functional restrooms that make it easy to follow through. Global Handwashing Day serves as a reminder for individuals, families, schools, businesses, and public institutions to prioritize handwashing and make soap and water available.”

SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is a rating that measures the energy efficiency of an air conditioning or heat pump cooling system. A SEER rating is calculated by taking the typical cooling output during a cooling season and dividing it by the total electric energy output over the same time period. In general, the higher the SEER rating of an AC unit, the less electricity is needed to do its job and the more energy efficient it is. A SEER rating for your AC is similar to the miles per gallon rating for your car – it’s a rating of maximum efficiency and may vary under different conditions.

What’s a Good SEER Rating for an AC?

The minimum standard SEER rating for air conditioners is 13, and Energy Star® rated ACs must have a SEER rating of 14.5. Newer, very high-efficiency models may have a SEER rating as high as 21. Most older AC systems are rated around an 8 or 9, so many of today’s models will be a measurable improvement, likely resulting in lower energy bills.

What SEER Rating is Best for You?

You may naturally think that you should just get the AC with the highest SEER rating, but that may be more efficiency than you need, and it will likely be more expensive than other models. The SEER rating that is best for you depends on many factors, including where you live, the size of your home, and your specific cooling needs. Air filters are vital to keeping our homes clean, keeping our HVAC systems running smoothly, and ensuring proper indoor air quality and comfort. However, there may be a number of things about your air filters that you didn’t realize. Here are five surprising facts about your HVAC air filters that you might not know.

1. Standard Air Filters Were Only Designed to Protect Equipment

People tend to think that HVAC air filters clean the air you breathe in your home, but not all air filters are created equal. In fact, standard air filters were only designed to protect the HVAC system, filtering out large dust and debris particles, but not smaller particles like common allergens. Air filters come with a MERV rating (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value). Filters with a low MERV rating (4 or less) will help protect your air conditioner, but don’t actually do much in the way of cleaning the air. The EPA recommends air filters with a MERV between 7-13 for removing smaller particles that may trigger allergies.

Common AC Issues and Solutions

Nothing can be more frustrating than when your air conditioner doesn’t function properly – especially on a hot summer day. It can not only be an annoyance, but also a health issue for people who may not be able to tolerate higher temperatures. For those reasons, it’s important to quickly identify the problem and seek a solution. Here are a few of the most common AC issues and what can be done to fix them.

Refrigerant Leaks

If you notice a brightly colored stain near your AC unit, or feel like your AC is not cooling properly, you may have a refrigerant leak. Unfortunately, you can’t just add refrigerant to your system to fix this. Contact a professional technician to check for and repair any leaks, test the repair and to charge the system with the proper amount of refrigerant. Refrigerant leaks can severely damage your compressor, which can be costly, and also can be harmful to the environment, so schedule service as soon as you notice the problem.

Drainage Issues

A clogged AC condensate drain line is often the culprit for AC issues such as a musty smell, standing water/water damage near the indoor unit, or the AC not cooling your home, shutting off, or not turning on. The drain line may become clogged with debris, algae or fungi, and then the water can either leak out into your home or back up into your AC To prevent clogging, pour a cup of bleach or vinegar down the condensate drain from the inside each spring – this will keep fungi from growing. If you see signs of a clogged line, turn off your AC and call a technician. For peace of mind, have the system maintained by a professional and make sure safety devices are in place to prevent water damage.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

Your AC could stop working due to a frozen evaporator coil, which can be caused by low system airflow. If you notice a build up of ice on the evaporator coil, turn off the AC at the thermostat to minimize the damage, and turn on the “fan only” switch to help blow warm air over the coils to melt the ice. The low airflow could be caused by a clogged air filter, so check and replace your filter if needed. Make sure all of your grilles are opened and not blocked. Once your evaporator is thawed, you can try to restart the system. If the icing comes back or you continue to have problems, you may have an issue with your blower fan or refrigerant leak and should consult a professional.

Electric Control Failure

The electric components in the compressor and fan controls can wear out over time, and the corrosion of wires and terminals can keep your AC from starting –Electrical problems are best diagnosed and addressed by a professional.

How to Keep Cool in Texas During the Summer

Texas is known for its scorching summers, but this year especially, the entire Western part of the US is having a heat wave like no other. In fact, many Texans were recently asked by the Energy Reliability Council to conserve energy to avoid blackouts, as areas such as Dallas and Austin reached triple-digit temperatures.

So, let’s talk about some ways you can ensure your home is as cool and comfortable as possible during this record-breaking Texas summer, without draining the power grid.

Make sure your AC is working properly

Now is no time to have your AC go on the fritz – it could literally be deadly. Schedule an appointment to have your AC checked and maintained to ensure it is working as effectively and efficiently as possible. If your AC unit is more than ten years old and not working at it’s best, it might be a good time to upgrade to a newer, more energy efficient model which can keep your house comfortable while also saving on energy costs.

Help your current AC run better

In addition to regular maintenance, remember to regularly replace your air filters according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Dirty air filters can make your system work harder, expending more energy. You should keep your AC set at a regular temperature – ideally around 75 degrees. It’s also a good idea to keep the area around your outside unit free of debris, grass, and branches, so that nothing is keeping your AC from running efficiently.

Bring on the shade

Blocking the sunlight from coming in – especially on west or south facing windows – can make a big impact in reducing the temperature in your home. Use blinds and heat blocking curtains to help keep your cool. Also, while it may take a while to pay off, consider planting some shade trees or tall bushes around your home to block the sunlight.

Reduce other sources of heat inside

Avoid cooking with the oven or stove top on vert hot days – consider grilling outside, eating cold sandwiches or salads, or eating out instead. Air dry your dishes, and hang your clothes out to dry if you can. If you must use the dryer, use it right before bed so the heat dissipates overnight. It may seem like a small thing, but switching out incandescent light bulbs for fluorescent or LED bulbs can also make a difference.

Other ways to reduce the strain on your AC and the temperature in your home is to use fans to help the air circulate and a dehumidifier to remove moisture from the air (which makes it feel hotter).
