Hamilton worked some odd jobs at the Home Depot to Ace Hardware, for example, and even dabbled in some college courses in public speaking and criminal justice, and child psychology because he was curious about how the human mind develops at a young age and how people think and learn.

Yet, Hamilton realized he wanted to apply his skills to something hands on in the real world. After working briefly for a company that handled groundwork and excavations, Hamilton discovered that he enjoyed the challenges of plumbing and the satisfaction of solving practical problems. “Looking back now, I wish I’d joined the field sooner. There’s something deeply rewarding about building and repairing things that have a direct, tangible impact on people’s lives,” says Hamilton.

The Journey

Hamilton’s plumbing journey began in 2018 with a large, multi-trade company, which included mechanical, plumbing, HVAC and electrical work, where he started in the company’s Journeyman’s program, earning his Journeyman’s card along with an ASSE 6010 Medical Gas Systems Installer certification. While doing this, he also went to college to earn certifications for STICK, MIG and TIG welding, with a 2G position certification in both flat and vertical. “After completing the Journeyman’s program, I held my Journeyman card for one year, I then applied for and passed the Master Plumber’s test on my first attempt,” says Hamilton.

That brings Hamilton to where he is today. Master plumber, owner and operator of Patriot’s Plumbing LLC, which specializes in medical gas installation, and most everything that relates to pipes, plumbing and mechanical piping. “If it has pipes, I’ll work on it,” says Hamilton. (Check him out on Instagram @patriotsplumbingllc https://www.instagram.com/patriotsplumbingllc/)

Into less than one year of owning Patriot’s, the push to start his own business came from a desire for freedom, the freedom to make better choices for both customers and himself. Over time, Hamilton grew frustrated by poor organization, inefficiency and unrealistic job schedules that affected the quality of work. “I wanted to build something that emphasized integrity, reliability and service; a business where both my customers and I could take pride in the work being done,” says Hamilton.

The military helped instill some of the qualities needed to run a successful business, which included discipline, punctuality, accountability and organization. “If you’re on time, you’re already late, so I always make it a point to arrive early and prepared. Oh, and if f your tools and truck are a mess, your workday will be too,” says Hamilton.

Workforce Attraction

How can the plumbing industry do a better job attracting more people to the trades? According to Hamilton, it’s challenging to attract people because of the current perception of work. People think of hard, laborious days for low entry level pay, which can be true initially. For example, says Hamilton, in Virginia an apprentice plumber might range from $16 to $26 dollars per hour, depending on location.

“We need to focus on what tradespeople can become, not just what they are when they start. The fact is, tradespeople who are self-sufficient and own their businesses are often financially successful. People don’t realize the crucial role we play. A plumber doesn’t just install a toilet; they also maintain life-saving equipment like medical gas lines, oxygen lines and vacuum pumps for hospitals. We need to reframe the conversation around the essential, crisis-level work we do,” says Hamilton.

Giving great advice, Hamilton says for those thinking about it, “Get in early, push to be the best, learn as much as you can, and apply for every certification you’re eligible for. Don’t wait or let up. Money is infinite, time is limited. Once you start your trade, commit to it, find something you are good at, and hammer down on it,” says Hamilton.

Work/Life Balance

After working nonstop, Hamilton has learned how important it is to make time to rest. “I’ll admit, it’s still something I struggle with because I’m the kind of person who always says ‘yes’ and enjoys taking on new challenges. However, I also am learning to be more intentional about setting aside time to recharge and enjoy my family.”

Currently, he is the full-time, fill-in dad for two boys, ages five and six. “Neither parent is involved in their lives, and those boys have become one of the most important parts of my life. While it’s brought challenges and stress, it’s also been a huge motivator, driving me to build something bigger. I strive to give them a better life and maybe one day this business could turn into something great that they would want to take over,” says Hamilton.

And while Hamilton enjoys the outdoors and exploring places he hasn’t been before, he also likes playing the guitar, working on vehicles and building things, pretty much anything hands on. His bigger ticket, bucket items include traveling to Africa, England and Scotland. “I’m also fascinated by the idea of taking plumbing-related trips—visiting tool companies and manufacturers to see how tools and plumbing supplies are designed and made. The behind the scenes process really interests me,” says Hamilton.

Furthermore, to keep that work/life balance in check, Hamilton is a big proponent of staying healthy, saying that physical health goes hand in hand with mental health. If you eat poorly and neglect your body, he says, you’ll feel sluggish and unmotivated. The key is consistency. Take care of yourself a little more each day, and over time you’ll feel stronger, clearer, and more balanced both mentally and physically. “A cloudy mind makes mistakes; it is important to keep your thoughts in check and that no matter what happens, the sun will rise and set. Each day brings a new opportunity,” says Hamilton.

In the end, what Hamilton finds fulfilling from the trades is that he can find that the different situations on jobs call for a special type of critical thinking and problem solving. He enjoys figuring something out that 10 other people looked at previously and gave up on, and it’s rewarding when you can step back, look at what you put together and watch it function properly. “This trade is extremely satisfying knowing you performed the work and one day when you have retired there will be someone new in the trade that will look at the work you put together and know that someone put in quality work,” says Hamilton.

Finally, what will you find on Hamilton’s playlist? Well, he’s going old school with a mix of classic rock and easygoing tunes, and when he’s in the mood to clear his mind or unwind, he’ll usually put on Gordon Lightfoot-songs like “Early Morning Rain,” “Summer Side of Life,” and “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”

And, of course, we end with the last time he said today was a great day, “I was fishing with my two boys, and they both caught their first fish that day. That was a great day!”

Sign up for the Mechanical Hub newsletter to get stories like this right into your inbox, for Free! https://mechanical-hub.com/enewsletter/

For more on Patriot’s Plumbing,
PHCC Educational Foundation Awards Record Breaking Sixty-Six Students with $152,000 in Scholarships https://plumbingperspective.com/phcc-educational-foundation-awards-152000-in-scholarships/ urn:uuid:191965f0-c8a0-bd92-7af5-d65329539c4d Thu, 23 Oct 2025 12:50:45 -0400 The Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors—National Association (PHCC) Educational Foundation is proud to announce the winners of our 2025 scholarship program. This makes them an ideal solution for both new construction and retrofits in environments where open flames are an issue or inspection times are tight. Housecall Pro and Bluon’s collaboration addresses both challenges by embedding expert-level resources and essential data into the field management software (FSM) already trusted by tens of thousands of HVAC professionals to manage their businesses.

“Speed wins. Pros get paid for fixes, not for hunting manuals. Tech should adapt to how Pros work. Not the other way around. HVAC techs spend hours chasing specs, wiring diagrams, and guidance. That time should be billable,” said Roland Ligtenberg, co-founder of Housecall Pro. “We put Bluon’s gold-standard database inside Housecall Pro, paired with MasterMechanic AI. Pros get model-exact answers in seconds without leaving the workflow. Celebrated annually on October 15, this worldwide event reminds people that consistent hand hygiene is critical to preventing the spread of infectious diseases and protecting community health.

According to the Global Handwashing Partnership, regular handwashing at key times – such as after using the restroom, before preparing food, or after caring for someone who is ill – can cut diarrheal disease nearly in half and reduce acute respiratory infections by almost a quarter. These benefits are especially important in protecting children under five, who are most vulnerable to preventable illnesses caused by unsafe hygiene practices.

Why Handwashing Matters More Than Ever

Medical experts emphasize that soap and water remain the gold standard for reducing the spread of germs that cause illnesses such as influenza and other common viruses. But when it comes to norovirus — one of the most contagious stomach bugs — handwashing is the only effective defense. Unlike alcohol-based hand sanitizers, which do not work against norovirus, vigorous washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds provides the friction and rinsing action needed to dislodge and flush away viral particles.

“Handwashing, using soap and warm water, is an easy and effective way to reduce the spread of disease-causing organisms like norovirus,” says medical microbiologist Michael P. McCann, Ph.D., professor emeritus, Saint Joseph’s University. “Given the ease with which some of these organisms can be spread on solid surfaces, in food, and by other means, handwashing is something that everyone should do after activities like using the restroom.”

What Bradley’s Healthy Handwashing Survey Reveals

For 16 years, Bradley’s Healthy Handwashing Survey has tracked Americans’ hand hygiene behaviors and attitudes. Findings from the 2025 survey reinforce both progress and challenges:

Americans value handwashing. 93% say it is important to maintaining their health.

Most wash after restroom use, but lapses remain. 81% always wash their hands after using a public restroom.

Soap use isn’t universal. While lathering is best, 45% admit to sometimes rinsing with only water – with men more likely than women to skip the soap.

Gender differences are clear. 85% of women report always washing their hands in public restrooms, compared with 77% of men. Women also take extra precautions to avoid germs, such as using paper towels to touch restroom surfaces.

Clean facilities matter. 84% say that an unkempt restroom negatively impacts their perception of a business, underscoring the importance of well-stocked, hygienic facilities that support handwashing.

A Call to Action for Global Handwashing Day

“This year’s theme, Clean Hands Are Within Reach, reinforces that handwashing is both a personal responsibility and a global health priority,” says Jon Dommisse, vice president of business development and strategy for Bradley. “Our survey confirms that people believe in the importance of handwashing, but they also need clean, functional restrooms that make it easy to follow through. The warming temperatures, the blooming flowers, the dusting of pollen over everything! In March, April, and May, temperatures and humidity levels rise, plants and trees sprout, and your indoor air quality may decline – thanks to pollen, dust, mold, and other allergens and particles in the air. Here are some tips for improving the air quality in your home during the Spring.

Change Your Air Filters

Regularly replacing your HVAC system’s air filters can make a noticeable difference in the quality of the air you and your family breathe in your home. The EPA reports that air filters not only prevent the build-up of dust but they can also reduce other harmful airborne pollutants such as pollen, pet dander, molds, bacteria, viruses, and more. Using a medium to high efficiency air filter and replacing it regularly (according to the manufacturer’s instructions) can greatly reduce these airborne particles. For an easy and convenient way to remember to change your air filters on time, order them through our online store and auto-schedule them to be delivered directly to your home on a regular basis. You and your family will notice the difference that clean air makes!

Consider an Air Purification System

If you’re worried that your air filters aren’t doing enough to clean the air in your home, the Air Scrubber by Aerus is a whole-home air purifying system that installs directly into your existing HVAC system. Using our proprietary Active Pure® system, the Air Scrubber is proven to remove 99% of all surface and airborne contaminants, including VOCs, odors, dust, pet dander, mold, fungi, and others allergens or asthma triggers.

Schedule Preventative Maintenance for Your HVAC System

Finally, Springtime is a great time to schedule preventative maintenance for your HVAC system. You want to ensure that everything is working correctly before those scorching hot Texas summer days hit.

Schedule a maintenance visit today with the professionals at Advent Air. Power Down Your parents were right – […]

The post 5 Ways to Conserve Energy at Home appeared first on Advent Air Conditioning.

If your energy bills are stressing you out, there’s good news. There are a number of simple things you can do that can reduce your electricity bills and help the environment at the same time. Read on for the top five ways you can save energy at home.

Power Down

Your parents were right – you should turn off the lights whenever you leave the room. This simple habit can make a big difference in your energy bill. Also – did you know that many appliances still use energy even when they are off? For that reason, unplug devices when not in use (or use a power strip and turn it off). Shut your computer down completely when not in use instead of just letting it “sleep.”

Cool it with the Hot Water

It takes a lot of energy to heat water, so limit shower time, consider hand washing dishes and use cold water in your washing machine (most detergents these days will work just fine in cold water). Also, when you load up your dishwasher or washing machine, make sure you are running a full load. This will prevent you from wasting water and electricity. Finally, be sure that your appliances are newer, energy-efficient models.

Insulate and Seal

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that homeowners can save an average of 11% on total energy costs by sealing up any air leaks in their homes and properly insulating attics, crawl spaces, and basements. Check your house for drafts, leaks, or under-insulated areas, or hire a professional to do a home energy assessment to help you identify areas you need to address.

Use a Smart Thermostat

With today’s smart thermostats, you can program your HVAC to cool or heat your house less when you are away or are asleep. For example, if you are at work for 9 hours a day and sleeping for 7, that’s a significant amount of time when you can set your thermostat down or up a few degrees. That can make a difference in your energy bills. Also, using separate thermostats for different rooms/zones of your house can also cut costs because you can reduce the amount of heating/cooling you use in infrequently used rooms (such as a guest room).

Invest in a New, Energy Efficient HVAC System

Technology in the HVAC industry has advanced a great deal in recent years. Today’s models are high-efficiency, customizable, and use adaptive technology to ensure your comfort while reducing your energy bills. Some systems control temperature and humidity, airflow, and air quality in your home, and you can manage some newer models directly from your smartphone. However, if your energy bills are high, or your AC is noisy or constantly needs adjustment, you may want to look at a new system.

Be sure to keep your HVAC system running as efficiently as possible with routine maintenance. And if you have an older HVAC system and are tired of your monthly energy bills going through the roof, it may be time to consider a new energy-efficient HVAC system.

Don’t lose your cool! Schedule a free estimate today with the professionals at Advent Air. A SEER rating is calculated by taking the typical cooling output during a cooling season and dividing it by the total electric energy output over the same time period. In general, the higher the SEER rating of an AC unit, the less electricity is needed to do its job and the more energy efficient it is. A SEER rating for your AC is similar to the miles per gallon rating for your car – it’s a rating of maximum efficiency and may vary under different conditions.

What’s a Good SEER Rating for an AC?

The minimum standard SEER rating for air conditioners is 13, and Energy Star® rated ACs must have a SEER rating of 14.5. Newer, very high-efficiency models may have a SEER rating as high as 21. Most older AC systems are rated around an 8 or 9, so many of today’s models will be a measurable improvement, likely resulting in lower energy bills.

What SEER Rating is Best for You?

You may naturally think that you should just get the AC with the highest SEER rating, but that may be more efficiency than you need, and it will likely be more expensive than other models. The SEER rating that is best for you depends on many factors, including where you live, the size of your home, and your specific cooling needs. The Department of Energy enforces SEER requirements based on geography – the minimum SEER rating in the South (where it is hotter) is 14, but in the North, it’s 13.

Thinking about Buying a New AC?

When you consider buying a new HVAC unit, be sure you have a professional technician come to your home first to do a cooling load calculation. This calculation takes numerous factors into account, such as the square footage of your home, number of rooms, number of doors and windows, the climate you live in, insulation levels, the condition of your ductwork, and more. An HVAC expert can help you determine what SEER rating/HVAC unit best fits your specific needs.

Contact Advent Air

Advent Air is committed to the quality of the air you and your family breathe every single day. Still, problems with these systems, if not prevented or addressed early, can cause dangers of their own and lead to property damage, injury, and even death. Read on for some helpful tips about how to prevent these HVAC issues and keep your home and family safe.

Power Down

If you’re having any major problems with your HVAC unit, rule number one is to shut off the circuit breaker for your system before attempting any troubleshooting and to prevent further damage to your unit. Contact an experienced HVAC technician to perform emergency repairs or replacements.

Clear the area

Check around your furnace before you start it for the first time to make sure that there is nothing flammable nearby – items like clothes, paint, storage boxes, aerosol cans, gasoline, or other household items should never be kept near the furnace. Additionally, if you have a gas furnace, be sure that the outdoor exhaust flue is clear – otherwise dangerous and potentially deadly gasses such as carbon monoxide can back up into the house.

Get, Test, and Maintain Detectors

Speaking of carbon monoxide (CO), be sure that you have CO detectors throughout your house, as well as smoke detectors. Since carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas, people are often unaware of a CO leak until it’s too late. You should test all your detectors once a month, change the batteries every six months (even if they are still working), and replace the detectors every ten years.

Avoid Portable Heaters

Many home fires each year are caused by unattended portable heaters. These can be very dangerous and are also costly to run. Also, never use your oven for heating your house. Talk to an HVAC technician about safe and cost-effective ways to properly heat your home.

Regularly Schedule Preventative Maintenance

Finally, it’s wise to have your HVAC system checked regularly: twice a year is recommended, and you want to have your furnace checked before the weather gets too cold, or your AC before it gets too hot. Professional technicians can quickly spot any safety issues that could lead to gas leaks, CO leaks, or cause a fire.

At Advent Air, we’re committed to the quality of the air you and your family breathe every single day, and we want to be sure you and your family stay safe and comfortable in your home. And when that happens, the last thing you want is to have your furnace go on the fritz in the middle of the night. At Advent Air, we’re here when you need us – to maintain your furnace, repair it, or even replace it – and to ensure that your budget, energy bill, and comfort always come first.

But we don’t want you to ever have to wake up to a freezing house (and freezing pipes) – so here are our top four furnace maintenance tips so you can stay warm and cozy all winter long.

1. Don’t Wait for Winter Weather to Check Your Furnace

Furnaces always seem to conk out on the coldest night of the year. That’s why you should have your furnace checked by a professional every year while the temps are still mild, so you have plenty of time if you discover that your furnace is in need of repairs or replacement.

2. Replace Your Air Filter

Your air filter does the important job of trapping particulates in your home, such as dust, pollen, mold spores, and more. When air filters are not changed regularly, they can become clogged with those particles, making your furnace work harder to push the air through. This is not only inefficient, but it can ultimately wear out your furnace faster, increase your energy bills, and reduce your air quality. Check out our online store to order your air filters and have them auto-delivered so you never forget!

3. Clean Out Vents and Ductwork

At the start of the winter season, take a walk around your house and check that all heating vents are open (unless you are closing them off for specific rooms) and that nothing is blocking them. You may also want to remove the vents to vacuum out any debris that may impede airflow. Also consider having someone inspect and clean your ductwork, especially if it hasn’t been cleaned in a while.

4. Keep Your Family Safe

Check around your furnace before you start it for the first time to make sure that there is nothing flammable nearby – items like clothes, paint, storage boxes, aerosol cans, gasoline or other household items should never be kept near the furnace. Additionally, if you have a gas furnace, be sure that the outdoor exhaust flue is clear – otherwise dangerous and potentially deadly gasses such as carbon monoxide can back up into the house.

At Advent Air, we’re committed to the quality of the air you and your family breathe every single day, and we want to be sure you stay warm and safe this winter. It may be a sign that there is mold and mildew growth inside your HVAC system. If you suspect your HVAC is the culprit, there are a number of things you can do to prevent moisture from building up and mold and mildew from growing in the first place.

Maintain Your Drain Pans

Make sure your HVAC drain pans are sloped and cleaned regularly, otherwise water will accumulate in the drain pans. Bacteria and microbes thrive in standing water, and mold can grow and back up into your system.

Replace Your Air Filters

Change your air filters regularly, according to the manufacture’s recommendations, as dirty or wet air filters won’t be able to efficiently capture mold spores. Consider getting an air filter with a MERV 8 rating or higher for greater performance in preventing mold spores from entering your home. Note, you can easily order your air filters from our online store, and even auto-schedule them to be delivered directly to you.

Schedule Routine HVAC Maintenance

Schedule regular maintenance appointments with qualified HVAC technicians who can ensure your system is running properly and take care of any issues. During a maintenance appointment, an HVAC technician will be able to flush out your condensate drain line to prevent clogs and get rid of debris that could lead to back-ups and mold growth.

Invest in Duct Cleaning

It’s possible that over the years, the ductwork in your home has become dirty with dust, dander, pet hair and other pollutants. That can be a breeding ground for mold – especially in a damp environment – and reduce the air quality inside your home. Consider having your ductwork checked to see if it needs to be cleaned.

Install an Air Purifier

At Advent Air, we offer a range of air purifiers, including the latest innovation – the Air Scrubber by Aerus. This whole home system installs directly into residential or commercial HVAC systems to remove surface and airborne contaminants including VOCs, odors, dust, pet dander, and other allergens. The system uses our proprietary ActivePure® Technology and has been tested in independent labs and proven effective on bacteria, viruses (including COVID-19), mold and fungi on surfaces and in the air.

Contact Advent Air

Advent Air is committed to the quality of the air you and your family breathe every single day. That’s simply not true when it comes to your HVAC. Getting an HVAC system that is too large for your home can cause a number of problems you may not have considered. Here are the top four reasons you want to ensure that the system you purchase is the right size for the job.

1. Short Cycling

While it may sound nice to have an air conditioner so powerful that it can cool your house in minutes, this can actually cause an issue called short cycling, which is when your AC turns off and on in rapid succession. This can cause considerable wear and tear on your HVAC system and dramatically shorten its lifespan.

2. Too Hot or Cold

When an HVAC system is too large for home, it cools or heats your house in a fast and powerful blast instead of the gradual process that should be occurring. When your home’s temperature is gradually adjusted, you get more even heating and cooling. HVAC systems with too much capacity can cause hot or cold spots in your house and lead to uncomfortable temperatures.

3. High Humidity

A properly sized air conditioner will dehumidify the air as it is cooled, but a system that is too large doesn’t run long enough for this process to take place due to short cycling. That means that the air in your home may feel damp and clammy if your HVAC is too big.

4. Increased Costs

Finally, not only will an oversized HVAC system likely cost more than you need to be spending, you will also pay for higher energy bills, as the system will use more power as it frequently turns off and on. You also will likely need to replace your HVAC system sooner, as oversized units have a shorter lifespan due to mechanical issues caused by short cycling.

When you are considering buying a new HVAC unit, be sure you have a professional technician who can do a cooling load calculation. This calculation takes numerous factors into account, such as the square footage of your home, number of rooms, number of doors and windows, the climate you live in, insulation levels, the condition of your ductwork and more, to determine what sized HVAC system is best for you.

Contact Advent Air

Advent Air is committed to the quality of the air you and your family breathe every single day. However, there may be a number of things about your air filters that you didn’t realize. Here are five surprising facts about your HVAC air filters that you might not know.

1. Standard Air Filters Were Only Designed to Protect Equipment

People tend to think that HVAC air filters clean the air you breathe in your home, but not all air filters are created equal. In fact, standard air filters were only designed to protect the HVAC system, filtering out large dust and debris particles, but not smaller particles like common allergens. Air filters come with a MERV rating (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value). Filters with a low MERV rating (4 or less) will help protect your air conditioner, but don’t actually do much in the way of cleaning the air. The EPA recommends air filters with a MERV between 7-13 for removing smaller particles that may trigger allergies.

If you really want cleaner air, consider the Air Scrubber by Aerus, a whole home air purifying system that installs directly into your existing HVAC system. It is proven highly effective at removing 99% of all surface and airborne contaminants including VOCs, odors, dust, pet dander, mold, fungi and other allergens or asthma triggers. It is also the only air purifier scientifically proven to reduce the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) novel coronavirus on surfaces.

2. An Overused Filter Can Cost You

If your HVAC air filters are not regularly replaced, they can cost you in more ways than one. Your HVAC system will have to work harder to pull air through dirty and congested filters, which uses more energy (increasing your energy bill), and causes more wear and tear on your system (which could lead to costly repairs and a shorter lifespan). Talk to a professional HVAC technician to let you know what air filters are right for your system, and how often they should be replaced.

3. Don’t Try to Clean and Reuse Your Air Filter

Unless you purchase special air filters that are intended to be cleaned and reused, you should never try to clean a disposable air filter. Doing so can damage the filter, allowing particles to pass through into the air you breathe, and if it is put away wet or damp, it can grow mold, fungi and bacteria.

4. Don’t Always Buy the Filter with the Highest Rating

Especially if you have a family member with allergies, you may assume that you should just buy an air filter with the maximum MERV rating (16). MERV ratings 16 and above are typically used in environments where air filtration is critical such as hospitals. However, air filters with higher MERV ratings tend to be more expensive, and they can also force your system to work harder than necessary – again increasing your energy bills and decreasing your system’s lifespan. Many HVAC systems list a maximum MERV rating – be sure to not exceed it.

5. Turn Your System Off When Replacing Air Filters

Finally, make sure that when you are replacing your air filters that you turn off your HVAC system first. Otherwise, you could be blowing all kinds of dust and particles throughout your house unfiltered.

Having the right air filters and regularly replacing them is important for maintaining the air quality in your home. It can not only be an annoyance, but also a health issue for people who may not be able to tolerate higher temperatures. For those reasons, it’s important to quickly identify the problem and seek a solution. Here are a few of the most common AC issues and what can be done to fix them.

Refrigerant Leaks

If you notice a brightly colored stain near your AC unit, or feel like your AC is not cooling properly, you may have a refrigerant leak. Unfortunately, you can’t just add refrigerant to your system to fix this. Contact a professional technician to check for and repair any leaks, test the repair and to charge the system with the proper amount of refrigerant. Refrigerant leaks can severely damage your compressor, which can be costly, and also can be harmful to the environment, so schedule service as soon as you notice the problem.

Drainage Issues

A clogged AC condensate drain line is often the culprit for AC issues such as a musty smell, standing water/water damage near the indoor unit, or the AC not cooling your home, shutting off, or not turning on. The drain line may become clogged with debris, algae or fungi, and then the water can either leak out into your home or back up into your AC To prevent clogging, pour a cup of bleach or vinegar down the condensate drain from the inside each spring – this will keep fungi from growing. If you see signs of a clogged line, turn off your AC and call a technician. For peace of mind, have the system maintained by a professional and make sure safety devices are in place to prevent water damage.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

Your AC could stop working due to a frozen evaporator coil, which can be caused by low system airflow. If you notice a build up of ice on the evaporator coil, turn off the AC at the thermostat to minimize the damage, and turn on the “fan only” switch to help blow warm air over the coils to melt the ice. The low airflow could be caused by a clogged air filter, so check and replace your filter if needed. Make sure all of your grilles are opened and not blocked. Once your evaporator is thawed, you can try to restart the system. If the icing comes back or you continue to have problems, you may have an issue with your blower fan or refrigerant leak and should consult a professional.

Electric Control Failure

The electric components in the compressor and fan controls can wear out over time, and the corrosion of wires and terminals can keep your AC from starting –Electrical problems are best diagnosed and addressed by a professional.

Contact Advent Air

At Advent Air, we understand how important it is to keep your AC maintained and running properly to keep your home cool and comfortable. Contact us to schedule AC maintenance, to assess and repair your current AC, or help you find and install a new efficient system that you’ll love. In fact, many Texans were recently asked by the Energy Reliability Council to conserve energy to avoid blackouts, as areas such as Dallas and Austin reached triple-digit temperatures.

So, let’s talk about some ways you can ensure your home is as cool and comfortable as possible during this record-breaking Texas summer, without draining the power grid.

Make sure your AC is working properly

Now is no time to have your AC go on the fritz – it could literally be deadly. Schedule an appointment to have your AC checked and maintained to ensure it is working as effectively and efficiently as possible. If your AC unit is more than ten years old and not working at it’s best, it might be a good time to upgrade to a newer, more energy efficient model which can keep your house comfortable while also saving on energy costs.

Help your current AC run better

In addition to regular maintenance, remember to regularly replace your air filters according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Dirty air filters can make your system work harder, expending more energy. You should keep your AC set at a regular temperature – ideally around 75 degrees. It’s also a good idea to keep the area around your outside unit free of debris, grass, and branches, so that nothing is keeping your AC from running efficiently.

Bring on the shade

Blocking the sunlight from coming in – especially on west or south facing windows – can make a big impact in reducing the temperature in your home. Use blinds and heat blocking curtains to help keep your cool. Also, while it may take a while to pay off, consider planting some shade trees or tall bushes around your home to block the sunlight.

Reduce other sources of heat inside

Avoid cooking with the oven or stove top on vert hot days – consider grilling outside, eating cold sandwiches or salads, or eating out instead. Air dry your dishes, and hang your clothes out to dry if you can. If you must use the dryer, use it right before bed so the heat dissipates overnight. It may seem like a small thing, but switching out incandescent light bulbs for fluorescent or LED bulbs can also make a difference.

Give your AC a helping hand

Other ways to reduce the strain on your AC and the temperature in your home is to use fans to help the air circulate and a dehumidifier to remove moisture from the air (which makes it feel hotter).

Contact Advent Air

At Advent Air, we understand the challenges to keeping your cool over a hot Texas summer, and we’re here to help. Contact us to schedule AC maintenance, to assess and repair your current AC, or help you find and install a new efficient system that you’ll love.

The post How to Keep Cool in Texas During the Summer appeared first on Advent Air Conditioning.
Updated list of Hampton Hill Businesses after yesterday’s announcement from @BorisJohnson thank you to all businesses that have updated me and good luck to all #covid19 #smallbusinesses #community #hamptonhillpic.twitter.com/GPOz4RX65c https://twitter.com/TCMHamptonHill/status/1242525610846629890 Twitter Search / plumbinglocal urn:uuid:fd507372-328c-fece-99d1-36f562f9892b Tue, 24 Mar 2020 14:56:05 -0400
Updated list of Hampton Hill Businesses after yesterday’s announcement from @BorisJohnson thank you to all businesses that have updated me and good luck to all #covid19 #smallbusinesses #community #hamptonhill pic.twitter.com/GPOz4RX65c
We are following advice from the Government and have taken significant steps to protect our customers & staff.
