Pesticides are formulated to kill things–insects, rodents, weeds, fungi, and microorganisms. Regardless of what the packaging says, anything that kills plants and animals poses a potential threat to humans. Here are some of the hidden dangers of pesticides you need to be aware of.

Hidden Dangers Of Pesticides

Pesticides kill insects. Herbicides kill weeds, bacteria, and fungi. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists them all as pesticides. They are everywhere because they are instrumental in growing the food that feeds everyone on the planet.

A 2020 US Geological Survey found at least five pesticides in 90% of the water samples they tested–including groundwater. Almost all fruits and vegetables you buy have pesticide residues on them. Some have the residue of over a dozen different pesticides.

Home gardeners often use chemical pesticides instead of natural homemade pesticides that work because the commercial products are easy, quick, effective, and long-lasting. Long-term exposure to toxic pesticides increases the possibility of suffering from the following diseases.

Respiratory Problems – Can cause coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and asthma attacks–sometimes severe.
Cancer – Some pesticides are carcinogenic (cancer-causing). They can damage the cellular structures in humans–leading to the growth of cancerous cells. Glyphosate–found in Roundup–has been linked to non-Hodgkin lymphoma but not conclusively.
Neurological Problems – Organophosphate pesticides can disrupt nerve function–increasing the risk of long-term brain and nervous system damage–increasing the possibility of Alzheimer’s and/or Parkinson’s diseases.
Hormonal Problems – Can interfere with endocrine function causing hormonal imbalances. Long-term exposure leads to fertility problems and reproductive problems. Pesticides can increase long-term developmental problems in children.
Skin Irritation – Cause irritation, burns, and an allergic reaction. Pesticides may be absorbed through the skin.
Headaches.
Nausea.
Immune System Suppression – Makes it harder to fight off infections.

Pets and Pesticides

Pets are particularly susceptible to pesticide poisoning in gardens and on lawns because they are closer to the plants and grass, rub and roll on it, and have less body weight to absorb pesticides. Symptoms of pet pesticide poisoning include vomiting, lethargy, seizures, and even death.

How Do You Get Pesticide Poisoning?

Pesticides are formulated for quick and easy absorption or ingestion into insects and weeds. They are easily absorbed by humans in various ways. Pesticides are often stored in body fat and are not easily excreted.

Ingestion. From eating unwashed fruits and vegetables.
Skin Absorption. From applying pesticides.
Eyes. Wind-borne or rubbing it into the eyes.
Inhalation. From applying pesticides or being exposed on windy days.

Masonite Siding – Is It Worth Using?

Masonite, hardboard, and pressboard are names used interchangeably for a type of manufactured siding. Masonite is the name of the company that made most of the product. It discontinued production in 1998 after losing a billion-dollar class action lawsuit. No product manufactured by Masonite is available anywhere.

A few other companies still manufacture hardboard siding. It is inexpensive and popular with tract housing builders.

What is Masonite Siding?

Masonite was patented in 1924 by William H. Mason and began mass production in 1929. It is manufactured using wood chips–often recycled–resins, glue, and pressure. The mixture is heated and compressed into hard siding. Masonite siding is available in multiple designs, sizes, and colors. It has a hard smooth or woodgrained finish and comes prepainted or primed.

Masonite has other uses including doors, countertops, flooring, furniture, cabinets, pegboards, and many other applications.

Advantages Of Masonite Siding

Masonite siding has many advantages that still make it a popular choice.

Cost. Hardboard siding costs $4.00 – $8.00 per square foot supplied and installed–less than vinyl siding in many cases.
DIY. It is easy to install–making it a good DIY project. Ease of installation is one of the reasons the supply and install prices are reasonable.
Strength. Very durable. Crack and dent-resistant.

Appearance. Woodgrain patterns look more like real wood than vinyl, aluminum, or fiber cement siding.

Problems With Masonite Siding

Masonite siding has been called one of the worst construction materials ever made. This is unfair. Masonite and some other manufacturers were successfully sued for over a billion dollars but some 30 and 40 year old hardboard sided houses still look very good and the siding is still functioning properly.

Availability. Hardboard is a special order product from almost all building supply outlets. Masonite brand siding is not available anywhere–making repairs difficult. (You may be able to get some from a siding company that is removing old siding before installing a new product.)
Maintenance. Should be repainted every 6 – 8 years to prevent water infiltration. Inspect the siding every year. Especially the lower three feet where rain, snow, and lawn watering get the siding wet regularly. Never ignore any damaged, blistered, or wet siding. Repair it as soon as you see it.
Water Damage. Hardboard siding that is not sealed properly absorbs moisture. (The bottoms of each lower course of siding are the most likely locations.) The siding swells, warps, rots, blisters, and invites pests like termites, carpenter ants, and mold infestations. It crumbles after sufficient wet and dry cycles.
Improper Installation. Many DIYers and professional installers neglect proper installation like priming any cut edges or using the correct caulking. These allow water infiltration that can be absorbed by the siding and even rot the framing behind it.

Masonite siding is a good option for siding a house but only if it is installed properly and well-maintained. It easily lasts 30 years and continues to look very good. Masonite can turn into an expensive disaster if things go wrong or it is not well taken care of. Know your own strengths and limitations before deciding to install it on your home.

Fixing a Squeaky Door

The most common reason for a squeaky door is friction between the hinges. Fixing this problem is easy if you have a lubricant like WD-40, but if you don’t have any on hand, there are a variety of other things you can use as a substitute.

Common household items like cooking spray, petroleum jelly, or a bar of soap all work well to solve creaking doors. Simply apply one of these materials to the problematic hinge and work it back and forth until you are sure that it is evenly distributed. If the squeaking persists, remove the hinge pins from the center of the hinge, clean any debris, such as rust, and reapply the lubricant.

Remove a Stripped Screw

Getting a stripped screw out seems like an impossible task, but you can use a rubber band to make the removal easier. When a screw’s head is worn down, place a wide rubber band over the top of the screw before inserting a screwdriver.

The rubber will fill the extra space between the grooves and allow the screwdriver to gain traction. For best results, be sure to press down firmly to prevent the screwdriver slipping off the head of the screw. This hack works for both flathead and Philips screws.

Deodorize Your Shoes

Shoes are a haven for odors, most not very pleasant. Deodorizing shoes is easy with a few simple tricks to eliminate odors and keep them fresh. A vinegar solution, made from equal parts vinegar and water, can be sprayed into the shoes to neutralize the bad smells.

Allow the shoes to dry completely before use. Sprinkling baking soda into your shoes and leaving them overnight will absorb moisture and smells. Shake them out before putting them on. Placing shoes directly in the sunlight can kill bad bacteria in shoes.

If you just want to keep bad smells at bay, you can place a tea bag, bar of soap, or a dryer sheet into your shoes to keep shoes smelling fresh and clean.

Soften a Slamming Door

A slamming door is jarring to both your senses and to the surrounding walls and door itself. Softening a slamming door can prevent damage to the door, frame, and walls. One quick solution is to apply felt pads to the interior of the door frame, where the door fits into it.

You can buy specialized felt pads for the purpose or pads that you can cut to size. Weatherstipping will also work if this is what you have on hand.

If the door is closing too quickly due to air pressure, adjusting the door closer or installing a door stop can be a good long-term solution.

Preventing Tarnish on Silver Items

Silver tarnishes when it reacts with sulfur in the air. While tarnish is inevitable to some degree, proper storage and maintenance can minimize it. Storing silver in an airtight container with anti-tarnish cloth helps to limit its exposure to the air and prevent serious tarnish. Placing pieces of chalk, silica gel packets, or anti-tarnish strips in your silver storage area will absorb moisture and slow tarnishing.

Regularly using your silver and gently wiping it will prevent tarnish buildup and maintain its shine. Avoid exposure to sunlight, sulfur-containing foods, and harsh chemicals to prevent further discoloration.

Remove Water Rings From Wood

Anyone who has hosted a party at their home knows that one of the unintended consequences to your wood furniture might be some residual water rings left by unattended drinks. You might be able to easily remove the water marks from your wood furniture using these household items. Be sure to test any solution in an inconspicuous place to be sure it does not damage your furniture.

Shower valves regulate water temperature and flow rate to your shower head and in many cases to your bathtub filler spout. The handle or handles should be safe and easy to reach and use.

Why Shower Valve Height Is Important

Shower valves should be conveniently located to provide ease of access and safe operation. Too high and the valve is difficult for children to adjust–increasing the possibility of scalding. Everyone using the shower should be able to reach the handle without straining–from both inside and outside the compartment. Shower valves should be located directly below the shower head. Shower heads, shower valves, and filler spouts usually form a plumb vertical line for ease of installation and use. Shower valve placement depends on various factors:

Building Codes. The International Residential Code (IRC) does not regulate shower valve height. The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) recommends 38” – 48” from the shower floor. Your local building regulations may be more specific.
Shower Users. Ensure every person in the house who uses the shower can safely reach and operate the valve handle. Mark the proposed location on the wall and have everyone stand in the shower or tub to check their reach.
Type Of Enclosure. Shower-only enclosures have different suggested valve heights than tub/shower combination units.

Typical Shower Valve Heights

There is no one-size-fits-all rule for how high to locate shower valves but there are standards that plumbers usually stick to during installation.

Some older or retro tubs have valve holes drilled into the wall of the tubs. Some have valves located on the side of the tubs. Neither of these affects shower operation–just the ease of access.

There are rarely hard and fast rules for shower valve height. Make sure it is located in the best place for you and your family–safe, usable, and convenient so everyone can use it comfortably and it is not an obstruction in the shower.

While their names sound alike, they differ in application, finish, cleanup, and longevity.

What Is Polycrylic?

Polycrylic is a water-based product used to finish wood, metal, and concrete. Available as a liquid or aerosol spray, it is less toxic than oil-based polyurethane. It dries faster, cleans up easier with water, and has a lower odor because it contains fewer Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC).

When dry, polycrylic provides durable rich satin or glossy finishes. Minwax is the only company that manufactures polycrylic.

What Is Polyurethane?

Polyurethane is made from synthetic resins. Originally developed as a protective finish for wood, it can be used over painted surfaces, concrete, and metal. It is highly flammable and should only be applied in well-ventilated areas while wearing a respirator.

Which Product Should You Use?

There is some usage overlap between the two products but it is fairly obvious they each perform better in different circumstances. Both protect the items they are used for from water, heat, and physical damage. Polyurethane produces a tougher finish. Choose it for high-traffic and heavy-use areas or items. Polycrylic is safer to use and easier to clean with very little after-odor. Choose it for indoor use.

Polycrylic. Best for smaller indoor projects–wood or previously painted–that do not get much use or wear and tear. Cabinets, trims, or furniture that is seldom used. Not a good choice for larger vertical surfaces.
Water-Based Polyurethane. Best used on indoor surfaces that receive moderately heavy use like floors, furniture, and wooden objects that are handled regularly.

Oil-Based Polyurethane. Best for high-traffic wood floors, heavily-use furniture, and outdoor projects–decks, railings, patio furniture, etc. Can also use water-based polyurethane outside but not polycrylic.

1. Declutter 100 Things in 100 Days (Easiest)

Those seeking an easy organizing challenge should consider decluttering 100 things in 100 days. As the challenge title suggests, all that is required is to find at least one thing to get rid of each day until you’ve amassed 100 total items.

It’s crucial to deal with the stuff you’re getting rid of immediately — throw items in disrepair in the trash and keep a donate box for the rest. Drop the donation box off at the nearest thrift store when it is full.

2. Live Like a Minimalist Challenge (Hardest)

If you’re more into extremes, try living like a minimalist for a month. While this challenge takes more work, it’s a true test of what you can —and can’t— live without.

Here’s how it works:

Choose a room (like the kitchen, for example)
Grab a few large containers and add all duplicate items and nonessentials in the container (examples: extra wooden spoons, knickknacks, decor, duplicate frying pans, spatulas, oven mitts, enough plates/cups for each family member, etc.)
