Fast Ways To Unclog a Toilet Without a Plunger

Nobody wants a clogged toilet–especially without a toilet plunger. If you find yourself in this situation, here are a few alternatives. You probably already have most of the things you need in the house. Many of them can be used together to eliminate the clog.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

Dip most of the water out of the bowl. Pour in a cup of baking soda followed by a cup of white vinegar. The chemical reaction should loosen the clog. Let it work for about 30 minutes–then flush the toilet. If it is still clogged, repeat the process.

Use the Toilet Brush

Use your toilet brush as a substitute plunger if it fits the drain hole. Shove it down the drain and pump it up and down to loosen the clog. If it works, a couple of flushes clear the remains of the clog.

Use a Drain Snake

If you have a drain snake, it is the quickest way to dislodge the clog. You can also make a homemade snake by unwinding a wire hangar. Straighten the wire but leave the hook in place. Push the hook end into the drain until you find the clog. Pull it apart and flush it away. You may want to tighten the hook a bit to give it more strength.

Use a Wet/Dry Shop Vacuum

Only if you already own one. If you have to run out to rent one, get a plunger instead. It’s cheaper and quicker.

Use the shop vac to suck out all of the water. Wrap a wet rag around the hose a few inches from the end. Poke it down the drain until it seals the opening. Hopefully, the vacuum will suck out the clog when you turn it on.

Use Hot Water

Dip most of the standing water out of the toilet bowl. Pour at least one gallon of hot tap water into the bowl. (Do not use boiling water. You may crack the toilet.) The heat and weight of the hot water may be enough to dislodge the clog. Repeat two or three times if required.

Hot Water and Soap

If hot water alone won’t do the trick, add dish soap to help disintegrate the clog and lubricate the drain. Pour about a half cup of dish soap into the bowl. Let it run down to the clog and work for at least 15 minutes. Add a gallon of hot water and let sit for another few minutes–then flush the toilet to push out the clog.

Commercial Drain Cleaners

Many commercial drain cleaners claim to work even if there is water standing in the toilet or sink. Remove as much water as possible from the bowl and pour the cleaner into the drain. Follow the directions. The cleaner starts work immediately to eat through the clog. Less compacted clogs usually clear out in minutes. Some may take a few hours to clear.

Liquid Bleach

Bleach can eat through cloth, so organic material like feces and toilet paper in a clog dissolve quickly. Bleach also breaks down hair. Remove most of the water from the toilet bowl. Add two or three cups of bleach. Let sit for about 15 minutes to allow the bleach to work its way into and through the clog. Flush the bleach and clog down the drain.

Avoiding Toilet Clogs

Toilets are designed to handle human waste and toilet paper. Period. Flushing any of the following products invites clogs.

Disinfectant Wipes.
Baby Wipes.
Makeup Wipes.
Paper Towels.
Feminine Products.
Diapers. Flushable diapers clog toilets just like non-flushable diapers.
Cotton Balls.
Cotton Swabs.
Bandages.
Left-over Food.
Grease.
Etc.

Unfinished Wood

Wood and water don’t mix—especially when that wood doesn’t have a protective top layer. Unfinished wood is porous, which means it can absorb liquids. When water lays on its surface, it acts as a sponge, soaking it up and causing the wood to expand and contract.

You should also be careful mixing too much water with finished wood, like your hardwood floors. Any liquid left on for a prolonged time can penetrate the cracks in the wood, causing the boards to warp.

Stacking firewood, old lumber, grass clippings, and tree branches against the house or garage is an invitation to pests. Mice, rats, squirrels, and insects like termites see these piles as a home. Termites are worse and other pests also find a way into the house.

Not Cleaning Wood-Burning Chimneys

Wood-burning chimneys, fireplaces, and stoves should be cleaned yearly–usually before winter sets in–or when creosote buildup is greater than ⅛”. Even small chimney fires damage the chimney liner. Large fires can burn through the chimney into the attic to start house fires. They also spew burning cinders all over the roof and neighborhood.

These inexpensive devices can save your life and allow you to extinguish fires early. Every home should have at least one smoke detector on each floor and a carbon monoxide detector in the basement.

Barbecuing Too Close To the House

Charcoal and gas grills cause close to 10,000 house fires each year when they are too close to combustible materials. If your grill is too close and doesn’t start a fire, the heat buckles and deforms your vinyl siding and burns paint off aluminum siding. Too much heat can melt siding.

Pouring the Wrong Things Down Your Drains

Combinations of grease, hair, soap, food scraps, etc. poured down sink drains and toilets can congeal into pipe-blocking clogs. The clog builds up over time and can become so solid that the only option is to cut out the pipes and replace them. In extreme cases, the clog ends up in the main sewer line under your house or yard.

Every home should have a can of shaving cream–even if no one uses it for shaving. Shaving cream is an excellent cleaner for some things. It is handy, easy to use, and inexpensive. Shaving cream is not a cleaning cure-all, but it works well for certain jobs.

Why Shaving Cream Cleans

Shaving cream creates rich thick foam with very little water content. It contains surfactants (chemical compounds that reduce surface tension between two materials), emulsifiers, and cleaning agents found in liquid or bar soap. It is versatile enough to clean your hands and your bathroom sink. Use plain inexpensive shaving cream. Avoid any product with fragrances, colors, gels, or moisturizers.

Jobs For Shaving Cream

Shaving cream is versatile enough to remove stains, shine stainless steel, and keep your mirrors fog-free.

Remove Mattress Stains

Shaving cream breaks down stains on mattresses caused by body oils and sweat. The foam stays on the mattress without soaking through. Work the shaving cream into the stain using a soft bristle brush. Let sit for about 30 minutes to break down the stain. Wipe clean with a soft damp cloth. Let the mattress air dry before replacing the bedding.

Shine Stainless Steel and Chrome

Stainless steel and chrome show every water spot and fingerprint. Shaving cream removes all of them including dirt and grime without scratching the finish. Spray shaving cream onto a microfiber cloth and spread it over the entire surface. Make sure you put a little extra effort into wiping heavily spotted areas. Use another clean damp microfiber cloth to wipe away the shaving cream and spots–leaving a shiny clean finish.

Lift Carpet Stains

The foamy texture of shaving cream lets it sit on the carpet rather than soaking through the carpet and into the underlay. It slowly breaks down stains as it sits there. Spray a thick layer onto the stain and leave it to work for at least 15 minutes. Use a dry cloth to dab the cream and stain off. Rinse the area with clean water, soak up any excess moisture, and let it air dry.

Clean Painted Cabinets

Spray a small amount of shaving cream onto a damp microfiber cloth. Gently scrub the grimy areas–usually around handles and pulls. Clean the area with a dry microfiber cloth. You should have a clean shiny cabinet door without scratches because shaving cream contains no harsh chemicals or grit.

Clean the Bathtub

Shaving cream and a clean broom are all you need to clean the tub without scratching it. The cleansing additives in the cream break down dirt, body oils, and soap scum. Apply a thick layer of shaving cream to the tub, then use the broom to spread it and scrub the tub or shower. Let sit for at least 30 minutes. Rinse, then brush again and rinse the dirt, grime, and scum away.

Remove Food Stains, Makeup Stains, and Sweat Stains

Shaving cream does a good job of removing stains from clothing so you can wear it again. It saves you from buying expensive stain removers.

Food Stains. Dampen the stained area. Work shaving cream into the stain. Rinse with cold water and wash as usual.
Makeup Stains. Spray directly onto the stain. Work it in to loosen the makeup oils. Then wash as usual.

Tired of wiping the mirror after showering? Apply a thin layer of shaving cream and wipe it off before showering for a clear condensation-free mirror.

Clean your glasses with shaving cream and they won’t fog up when you open the oven door or dishwasher. Or when you come in from the cold. It also works on car windshields and shower doors.

Clean Jewelry

Spray even the most delicate jewelry with shaving cream to get it clean. Work it into all of the crevices. Let it sit for a few minutes and then wipe earrings, necklaces, and rings clean and shiny with a soft cloth.

Remove Grease, Paint, and Nail Polish From Your Hands

Shaving cream removes grease, grime, and paint from your hands without harsh chemicals. Use it like any other hand cleaner. Just spray it on, work it into the grease, paint, and grime; then rinse it off.

Using acetone gets nail polish off your hands. It also can ruin the polish you just put on your nails. Washing your hands with shaving cream removes the nail polish from your skin but leaves it on the nails.

It is tempting to leave leaf cover on the lawn over winter–hoping it will rot and disappear. It won’t. Leaf cover provides a perfect environment for disease and fungi to breed. It prevents sunlight from reaching the grass and promotes snow mold.

Fall cleanup enhances curb appeal and presents a welcoming environment for visitors. Poor fall cleanup is especially apparent in locations that experience chinooks or quick snow thaws that expose messy lawns.

Get the Leaves Off

Remove all the leaves, twigs, branches, and garbage from your lawn. A layer of leaves traps moisture below it. Snow mold, diseases, and other fungi thrive in moist protected conditions. Insects and even rodents like mice move in under the leaf cover.

Grass goes dormant in winter but until then it still needs sunlight to remain healthy. Leaves and other trash prevent light from penetrating the grass and weakening it just before winter.

Cut your grass about 2” – 2 1/2” high just before it freezes. Shorter grass prevents matting under the weight of the snow. Slightly longer grass provides better protection against the cold. Cutting it shorter than 2” increases the chance of root damage over winter.

Dethatch

Thick thatch left over winter can damage lawns. It is a home for snow mold and prevents water from reaching the soil which allows moss and fungus to spread quickly in fall and winter. Lawns should be dethatched every two to three years or when the thatch is thicker than half an inch. Dethatching a lawn produces large amounts of debris that has to be removed before winter. Do the job about four weeks before freeze up to get the lawn clean and allow the grass to recover.

A little clutter is normal in everyone’s daily life. Cleaning is easier when the house is not cluttered and tidy. A house full of people needs as much space as you can provide. Store any non-essential items before starting serious cleaning.

The kids need to clean their bedrooms. Have them put the toys away and pick up clothing before you mop the floors and dust. They can make a new mess with any visiting friends and cousins starting on the day the company arrives.

Clear away excess items from flat surfaces and party areas like the dining room, living room, family room, and kitchen. Not only does this provide more room, but it also protects delicate items from damage. Everything can be replaced after your guests leave when you do the post-holiday cleanup.

Guest Bedrooms and Bathrooms

If you expect overnight guests, prepare the guest bedroom and bathroom a week or two before the event. Remove items you have stored there and clean out the closet. Change bedding, vacuum, and dust level surfaces. Clean the toilet and sink. Ensure you provide all essentials like extra toilet paper, soap, shampoo, towels, enough pillows and blankets, etc.

Leave windows and doors open–if possible–to get rid of the unused stuffy smells. A little air freshener and/or scented candles used a few days before company arrives freshens the room without the overpowering smell of recently sprayed freshener.

Kitchen

Hosting a party usually means spending a lot of time in the kitchen. Make your work area user-friendly in the days before the big event. Clean and disinfect all the surfaces, and appliances. Mop the floor. Clear as much counter space as possible by removing all non-essential items. Make sure that you have everything you plan to use close by. Give the counters a final wipe-down just before guests arrive.

Entryways

Your entry makes the first impression on your guests. It should be clean and inviting. More than that, it should be roomy and have storage. Remove as much of your family’s clothing, footwear, and possessions as possible to make room for guest’s coats, hats, and boots. Then give the walls, closet, and floor a good cleaning.

Clean off the porch, steps, and sidewalk at the same time–especially if you live in an area where snow and ice build up. Having guests struggle up to a door through a narrow snowy icy path is not welcoming and could be dangerous.

Dining Room

Clean and vacuum or mop the dining room. Dust everything including table, chairs, shelves, and furniture. Sanitize switches and door handles. If you are planning a formal meal, put out table cloths, and napkins, and set the table a day or two before the event.

Master Bedroom

Don’t forget to be good to yourself. Vacuum, dust, change bedding in your bedroom, and clean the ensuite bathroom–if you have one. Make your bedroom a clean inviting sanctuary where you can rest and relax comfortably when the party is over.

Decorations

Regardless of the occasion, put up any decorations after the heavy cleaning is done–about 3 or 4 days before the event. This gets them out of the way, gives you time to store boxes, and make changes if you need to.

This is also a good time to set out and arrange any welcoming items like candies, nuts, fruit bowls, flowers, candles, etc. Anything that makes your guests feel comfortable and wanted.
