Well, I gave in… My third graders have been singing THE CORN SONG seen below for weeks. I decided to use it to engage them in a multiplication craft. This is a fun and easy craft to set-up. Just print two pages. The students fill in the answers to the problem and fill in the vocabulary. Then color and cut. It’s Corn!!

Falling for the Distributive Property of Multiplication

My third graders were struggling with the distributive property of multiplication. I had to break it into small steps and come up with resources that helped them get the property. They finally have it.

•Files and a craft I use with my third graders to help them understand the distributive property of multiplication.

•Pages 3-11 are lesson resources (a bonus of sorts)

•Pages 12 – 17 are the craft files with pictures of finished crafts. The craft is an easy set up. You will print pages 16 and 17 for your students and grab some fall-colored construction paper for the students to glue their leaves to and you are set!

This has been extra helpful to my students when they are trying to figure out what is a column and a row! This printable is part of the set!

Optional Seating Finds on Amazon

I have desks in my classroom with traditional chairs, but I like to have other places for my students to sit throughout the day. Sometimes they get to make a choice of where they sit. Over the years I have tried out many types of chairs for small groups or optional seating time. Below are three tried and true seats from my classroom. Students love the option of sitting in something besides their desks! Here are some great chairs that will last you for years to come.

I love both of these sets of chairs above for my classroom. The little green ones I have had for about three years. I love that they are smaller. I fit in them and so do my third graders, but they are small enough that you can get more people around standard tables with these. They come in a set of six.

The white stools above are awesome. I use to buy the IKEA stools and they broke ever year… these are so sturdy and they never break and hold up so well. To me it is worth spending a little more to have them last longer.

The scoop chairs seen above are another set of chairs that last and last!!! I have had these 8 years and they still look new. My third graders love the option to sit in these during the school day!

You can see another chair in the picture . That is not from Amazon. That is the IKEA chairs and those hold up super well too. I have those in my classroom library nook and they are well loved!!! I have linked to them below, but I think they are less expensive if you go to IKEA.

Hope these chair ideas inspire you to get some flexible/optional seating in your classroom!!

I loved how much neater and organized my students desks were.

Pop-It Rounding Game

I have finally started to think about back to school. Engagement is always on my mind when I think of school! Towards the end of last year my students were really into POP-ITs. Were yours? I kept thinking, I need to find a way to incorporate Pop-Its into my lessons… finally, I decided to get crafty with them.

I begin my year in math teaching place value / rounding. I wanted to use Pop-Its in a center to reinforce this third grade skill. I found these Pop-Its online… They come in six, they are small, and they have the same number of pops each.

These are perfect for a game I created for rounding! You can see the game below and you can find it here!

This file contains two game boards with an answer key for both games. One game board is for practice with rounding to the nearest 10 and one game board is for practicing rounding to the nearest 100. I plan to use this with my third grade place value lessons at the start of school year. It will be come a center in my classroom. The two games should be printed and laminated (Pages 4 and 6 are the game boards). I suggest printing the answer keys and laminating them as well (pages 5 and 7). You will need one dice for each game and small Pop-Its like these at Amazon!

These are much larger and they come in a set of 6. Soon after Place Value I teach multiplication. I am creating a game for multiplication I can use with these and will post that later… but I did come up with a way to practice math facts using these. Below you can see factors of 2 and 3 on this one triangle. I just wrote them on with a ball point pen. It does not smudge and you can use soap and water to take the writing off if you want to take the factors off. On the opposite side I wrote the product. The idea would be that students could independently quiz themselves and check if they were correct to see if the back matched what they popped.

Pop It Fidget Birthday & Back to School Tags

The Pop-It’s were so popular last year that I decided that they would be my Birthday treat for my students this year. I created tags that can be used with the Pop-It’s for a back to school gift. I created three tags for back to school. They print in color with four per page. Then you just hole punch them and attach it to the Pop-It, and you have a great gift! PJ’s and The Christmas Carol Play!

As I mentioned in my last post, I have been teaching Virtual for a few weeks now since my school closed until the New Year. I am working hard to keep online teaching before Holiday break similar to how I would end the year in the actual classroom.

Today, we worked in winter PJ’s! The kiddos modeled their PJ’s and we danced to a few Just Dance songs to get the wiggles out! Plus we performed in our PJ’s too!

Since I have been at my current school I have performed the Christmas Carol with my third grade classes each year. I read this Children’s Book as an introduction and we often compare character traits of Scrooge and Grinch! I use the script from this pack every year. It is simple and to the point – perfect for third grade! I usually break the kids into two casts and they act it out complete with music, backgrounds they make, chains for Jacob Marley, and student technical add-ins.

This year, I modified this quite a bit so they could perform some of the play online. Usually I spend a week practicing this play with the students and we perform on Facebook Live for parents. This year we did two read throughs of it after reading the book – click here. We also watched this version on YOUTUBE – click here. Then, each student made a 1 minute 30 second FLIPGRID video of their favorite part of the play using puppets from a TPT pack (click here for that packet). I was so excited to watch all their videos tonight… they turned out so cute. I posted an example on the Teaching Heart Facebook Page – Click here!

I miss the real play, but this sure was fun and took me days less of planning to make it happen online… I hope your last few days in your classroom are going well!

Virtual Grinch Day

I started the school year in class with my students in early August and we made it 57 days of social distance schooling until we shut down. We are due to go back on January 7th! I have been teaching online for about three weeks now. I wanted to keep my holiday “fun days” still fun for the kids even if they are virtual. I have done Grinch Day since I started teaching in 1998. Here are some pictures from Grinch Day fun and activities on a regular Grinch Day in class. Click here!

I want to share a printable with some activity ideas for a VIRTUAL Grinch Day. It went really well today and if you still have a few days in school, you may enjoy some of these activities with your students.

The students had a pickup before this day and I made them Grinch bags as seen below…

They had a necklace craft, bookmark, green candy cane licked by the Grinch, and a Bendable little Grinch (ORIENTAL TRADING). One of their assignments was to take the bendable Grinch on an adventure in their home. They used FlipGrid to record the Green things the Grinch liked at their house. I shared the FlipGrids later in the day. They turned out really cute.

If you looked at the pictures from my post of my typical Grinch Day you will see we always draw the Grinch and talk about how his character changes through the story. We did the same thing through Zoom today…

My teaching partner and I created these lessons to excite our students about grammar. We have grammar sets for many of the third grade grammar standards. Verbs is one of our larger packets. We created it with a sports theme. In fact, each of our grammar sets is based around a theme. We have done very well on state testing due in part to these lessons. I wanted to focus on what I love about this verb set of lessons and activities!!! This is my second year using the set and my third grade students adore all the activities. Really, I am tricking them into learning about verbs because they are having so much fun learning that they do not know they are grasping needed standards.

Each of our sets come with anchor chart pieces and then a matching student notebook page. This set actually includes pieces to make three anchor charts and three student notebook pages. My students love their language arts notebooks.

Tennis balls is a big part of this story and in our verb tense lesson we use tennis balls to create Minute to Win It Centers using Tennis Balls (I always borrow the tennis balls from the gym teacher). The students work in teams for chances to win some playing time. They love this!!!
