I keep having issues with my kitchen sink drain – every few months it gets clogged and won’t drain properly.

A plumber told me the real problem is that the drain pipe was installed with an incorrect slope, so waste tends to build up over time. On top of that, the drain is shared with the apartment above me, meaning their waste also goes through this pipe.

I’m extremely careful on my end: I never pour grease or solids down the sink, and I always use a strainer to catch food particles. Despite that, it still clogs from time to time, and I’m the one who always has to call the plumber and pay for it.

So I have two questions:

Am I really supposed to cover 100% of the cost every time this happens, even if the upstairs unit may be contributing to the problem?

Is there any permanent solution to fix the slope issue or modify the system so this doesn’t keep happening?

Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated – thank you!

   submitted by /u/WhiteReturns
[link] [comments] Plumbing /u/WhiteReturns Can’t seem to connect a P Trap https://www.reddit.com/r/Plumbing/comments/1m2v9ay/cant_seem_to_connect_a_p_trap/ Plumbing help offered here, please post pictures. urn:uuid:b6d8382b-4aa2-6939-6e1a-7c7ee67552d2 Fri, 18 Jul 2025 06:46:23 +0000

So I DIY installed a bathroom vanity all by myself and I am trying to finish up the plumbing but I ran into an issue and can’t seem to fix it.

The 1 1/2 pipe to the P Trap doesn’t seem to fit. I am currently living in an apartment building that has a sump pump at the bottom of their garage. Unfortunately, my car is right next to this grate (which links to the sump pump). On 5 occasions now, the garage has flooded from the sump pump seemingly overflowing or not working (the most recent was from a power outage). This means my car has been totaled and my replacement vehicle (thankfully taller) has been surrounded by water on a collective 5 occasions. I have no experience with sump pumps, so I’m wondering, is this normal? Is the sump pump working as intended and it’s just unfortunate luck? Or is there something wrong that my apartment isn’t fixing? And if it matters, yes all of that dirt came up from the pump. I live in a rental, and recently I went under the bathroom sink to get some cleaner and noticed everything was a little wet. There was also a drip coming from the pipe under the sink. When I looked closely, I saw it was coming from the middle of the drain. I touched it and part of the drain just caved in, super corroded. I’m going to tell my landlord, but first I’m trying to decide if this is something he could put on me?

On one hand I saw people online saying not to keep cleaners and drain cleaner under your sink, and that it could cause pipes to corrode.

On the other hand I saw certain materials were used in the pipes of old houses (mine was built in 1910) that are much more prone to corrosion.

Further weird details. I think the toilet has smelled odd ever since we moved in. It kind always smells a little like pee no matter how much I clean it. Our landlord had someone look at it once but they didn’t fix the issue and we just never asked again.

We’ve been hearing this weird sound coming from the sink when we flush for about a month. After ruining a new wax ring attempting to fix a toilet with a mild side to side rock, I bought a Fluidmaster Universal Better Than Wax seal (7530), partly based on reviews here.

I watched the video and installed the product without the spacer, since my flange is 1/4” above the tile floor surface. I did notice that the Fluidmaster seal and my toilet’s bottom opening were the same size, so my toilet did not fit into the Fluidmaster opening, as some other buyers described.

I installed the toilet and tightened down the bolts. The back of the toilet is flush with the floor, but the front is about 3/8” off the floor, and the toilet has a pronounced front-back rock (Side to side rock is gone, though.). The tile does seem to be slightly lower in the front, measuring with a level. Doing a dry run of the install minus the wax ring or Fluidmaster, the toilet sat on the flange mostly flat with a gap as thick as two credit cards and slight rock.

Did I install the Fluidmaster seal wrong to cause this gap? My basement has a sump pump crock, but it’s located in a terrible part of the basement. (I will explain what I mean by that below).

For the first several years we’ve lived here, I’ve never had a sump pump in my basement. My area has experienced very heavy rains/flooding this spring and summer. This rain has caused my sump pump crock to fill with water for the first time that I’ve noticed. The first time it happened I was home, working in the basement. Fortunately I was able to run to Lowe’s and purchase a basic utility pump and connect a 100 foot garden hose to it. This worked well enough as I was able to run the garden house out of the house so that water was pumped out and away from my home. I ran the utility pump continuously for 3 days before the rain finally stopped and water stopped coming up into my crock. I felt lucky that I prevented my basement from flooding, however, I don’t like this as a long term solution.

I want to have a permanent sump pump installed with a float switch so that if I’m not home and there’s heavy rains that fill the crock, the sump pump will automatically kick on. I’ve had a couple of plumbers come out and look at doing this job for me. My sump pump crock is located on the western wall of my basement and outside/above that wall is my concrete patio with 2 concrete steps that lead to a door to my kitchen. These steps completely cover the foundation on that wall as they run the entire width of my patio along the west side of my home thus blocking any place for the sump pump discharge pipe to be drilled through.

Both plumbers have told me they can’t install a sump pump because of this and that they wouldn’t be able to run the discharge pipe through the foundation above the wall because the concrete patio and steps are covering the exterior wall above.

Are there other solutions or recommendations? Can I run a long set of pipes/plumbing from the sump pump to a different wall in my basement and have the discharge pipe exit through that wall? Or would the pump not be strong enough to carry water that distance and out/away from the home?

Thank you. I’m not a plumber, just a homeowner looking for advice.

   submitted by /u/malasten
[link] [comments] Plumbing /u/malasten 34 looking into plumbing apprenticeship https://www.reddit.com/r/Plumbing/comments/1m2p80r/34_looking_into_plumbing_apprenticeship/ Plumbing help offered here, please post pictures. urn:uuid:61c29b89-cf7e-73fd-4d17-2b4de24f4c56 Fri, 18 Jul 2025 01:22:32 +0000

Living in South Central Pennsylvania just looking for any information currently working at a plumbing and HVAC place and the owner said to me I don’t pay for license I pay for experience which is cool I guess but I wanna get my journeyman.

   submitted by /u/ExplanationSmart2688
[link] [comments] Plumbing /u/ExplanationSmart2688 Is this bad? https://www.reddit.com/r/Plumbing/comments/1m2p63r/is_this_bad/ Plumbing help offered here, please post pictures. urn:uuid:85f99293-2ccf-9740-20b9-0b1d73b3c796 Fri, 18 Jul 2025 01:20:00 +0000

Very serious question. I’m wondering if I can just replace each valve, or if I have to buy a whole new box and try to add that in.

   submitted by /u/HomelessnessForAll
[link] [comments]

Plumbing /u/HomelessnessForAll This is bad tiling, right? https://www.reddit.com/r/Plumbing/comments/1m2ldd4/this_is_bad_tiling_right/ Plumbing help offered here, please post pictures. urn:uuid:885c139d-5886-7cbd-e9c0-12956ea7007f Thu, 17 Jul 2025 22:27:44 +0000

I made another post earlier but can’t add photos, so I’m making a new post. Ball union valve split open due to freeze damage. I have the supplies to replace it, but I can't seam to get anything loose enough to remove the broken valve. What's the best approach to getting this valve off eithout having to remove the other pieces? Do I need to take the other valve and vacuum breaker off first? Am I better off cutting the lower supply pipe and just soldering in a new bit of pipe?

   submitted by /u/EstablishmentSea6932
[link] [comments]

Plumbing /u/EstablishmentSea6932
