As researchers find out more about Covid-19 everyday, navigating exactly what the virus is and how to protect yourself against it can be tricky. As a bearded man, wearing a mask also presents additional challenges throughout the day, like itchiness, tugging, discomfort and simply not covering everything it’s supposed to.

What is Covid-19?

Like other coronaviruses, the novel Covid-19 coronavirus affects the respiratory system, causing symptoms like:

cough
shortness of breath
fatigue
loss of smell
congestion
fever and chills
nausea and vomiting
diarrhea
muscle aches
headaches

Most people who contract Covid-19 will begin to show symptoms two to 14 days after exposure. However, some Covid-19 patients are considered silent carriers who present no symptoms but still transmit the virus to others.

Experts believe the Covid-19 virus spreads through respiratory droplets. When you talk, sneeze or cough within six feet of another person, you’re actually expelling respiratory droplets in their direction. And there’s nothing quite less appetizing than the fact that those droplets have a high chance of landing on their face and being inhaled into their lungs.

Why is wearing a face mask recommended?

According to the CDC, regularly washing your hands, wearing an effective face mask and practicing social distancing are currently the most effective ways to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Staying six feet apart halts the range of spraying respiratory droplets while face masks keep your germs contained behind your mask. And with experts still studying other ways the virus may spread, regularly washing your hands fights the idea that the virus may also sit on surfaces you touch.

Face masks are recommended for those over two-years-old who do not otherwise have trouble breathing or are incapacitated.

Which masks offer the most protection?

If you’re having trouble choosing between a cloth mask, the N95 option, surgical masks or a makeshift face covering, looking to expert research can help.

Recently, researchers at Duke University tested 14 facial coverings to see which masks were most effective. The N95 mask, technically a respirator, offered the most protection for the wearer and the surrounding participants. However, two issues stand in the way of it being best for the general public.

First, the valved version allows wearers to exhale germs through the holes putting others at risk. On the other hand, the N95 mask without valves proved most effective. For this reason, the CDC considers N95 masks “critical” for health care workers and emergency responders and advises against general public use.

While surgical masks and cloth masks also scored high in the effectiveness rankings, cloth masks offer slightly more protection because they sit tighter to the face.

Which masks should be avoided? The study found that bandanas, knitted coverings and fleece running gear offered nothing more than interesting textures. Specifically, runners’ neck gaiters proved less effective than not wearing a mask at all.

Cloth face mask options

Currently recommended by the CDC, cloth face masks present the best option for the general public in fighting the spread of Covid-19. They are designed to be worn hooked on the ears, covering both the nose and mouth.

The non-slip comfort mask

Often, one issue that comes along with having a beard is your mask tends to slide around throughout the day.

When searching for the ideal non-slip mask, it is important to find a cloth covering that secures snug at the ears and face.

The beard protection mask from “MiracleBeWhoYouAre” on Etsy uses soft elastic at the ears and a nose wire to make the mask more form-fitting. In addition, they include a third layer of cotton in the mask to act as a pocket filter for extended protection against spreading germs.

The mask that fully covers your bigger beard

Sporting a longer beard during the pandemic may seem more trouble than it’s worth. After all, stuffing your burly beard into a small face mask is not only ineffective but uncomfortable.

Thankfully, over on Etsy, “That’s So Dad” is offering a beard face mask in an XL size. With its extra length and coverage, you no longer have to snip away the bushy beard you worked so hard on.

One reviewer boasted about its effectiveness, writing, “This fit over my giant face and sizable beard. The first mask I’ve had that doesn’t leave a divot in my beard.”

The mask with extra personality

If you aren’t currently barred by work dress code restrictions, you can also have a little fun with the masks you wear out in public. Since the mask requires you to cover up your beard, you can always slap one on the mask to make up for it.

“Assmasks” on Etsy offers face masks with beards and mustaches printed on them so you can still feel like your bearded self.

Since they aren’t as long as some of the other options for bearded men, these masks are best suited to those with scruff or a short beard.

How else can I protect my beard and health during the pandemic?

With your face mask picked out and social distancing practices in full swing, you’re off to a good start. However, there are a few additional things that can boost your routine and health.

It’s important not to neglect your beard health just because you’re regularly wearing a mask around. While people may not be able to see your beard’s pandemic scraggliness, you’ll definitely feel it. Using beard oils and balms not only softens and strengthens your beard but also provides an additional environmental barrier for the sensitive skin underneath.

In addition, it’s not just important what you put on your body but also what you put in it. Foods high in vitamin C like broccoli and strawberries help fight off infection. Moreover, green tea has proven effective at boosting immune system function. Adding some of these healthier options into your routine will provide a stronger defense if you do come into contact with the virus.

Finally, limiting the amount of time you spend around others and public spaces is the best bet. While masks help prevention, they aren’t a perfect system either. While you still have to hit essential businesses like the grocery store, cutting down unnecessary outings lowers your risk of exposure.

While an itchy beard may seem unbearable in the beginning, the good news is it doesn’t last forever. Once your beard matures and softens, it will naturally start to ditch the itch. However, if you do find yourself asking, “why does my beard itch” months into the process, your discomfort is likely indicating issues hidden under the hair and in your habits.

Avoiding the discomfort from itchiness involves targeting and treating the source of the irritation. To help you pinpoint what’s causing the problem, here at Zeus Beard, we compiled a list of itchy issues and how to fix them.

Does an itchy beard mean it’s growing?

An itchy beard can mean your beard is growing, but not always. In the first stage of beard growth, some mild itchiness is normal as you transition from clean-shaven to bristled.

The reason new beards are often itchy is because the hairs are trained from trimming. This leaves strands stubby and sharp.

When these sharp bristles begin to break the skin’s sensitive surface to grow, they can’t help but tickle your face in the process.

While it will be tempting to tear away at your budding beard to relieve the itch, it’s best to resist touching your face too much during this phase and simply let it do its thing.

After the first month, itchiness should start to subside and you should notice your bristles getting softer and more manageable on their own. However, itchiness that persists beyond this stage may be indicating an issue in your health or hygiene.

If you’re experiencing an itchy beard and you’ve been at it for a few months, it may be time to make a few changes to your routine to keep your beard looking and feeling nice.

Factors that contribute to itch

Once your beard is out of the beginning stage, it’s not quite as simple to pinpoint the source of your itchy situation. However, looking to your routine and habits can help you find the culprit.

1. Your beard and skin are too dry.

Longer beards often get itchy when they get too dry. Unlike the hair on your head, your beard’s roots do not produce enough natural oil to sustain the ends. Once your beard breaks out of the short stage, beard oil becomes less of a convenient defense against itch and more of a necessity to replace missing moisture.

However, when your longer beard appears normal but still feels itchy, it’s likely locking in debris and bacteria that can harm your health.

How to clean your beard

Beards that aren’t being washed enough lead to skin and hair affected by acne, ingrown hairs and dandruff. Often the issue is that men remember to wash their beards in the morning but forget or get lazy around bedtime.

“The new normal,” “shelter-in-place,” “we’re in uncharted waters here;” just some of the many trending phrases in life right now. In the four decades I have lived through, I can honestly say I have never experienced anything quite like “the new normal.” I’d bet my life none of you have either. I can certainly say I never imaged I would find myself writing about why I chose to shave off my beard, but here we are, I guess.

So, how did we get here? I guess it all started 10 years ago during a “come-to-Jesus” talk with my newly appointed Dermatologist. As it turns out, like a lot of men, I had done a piss poor job of taking care of my skin, especially my face. As a result, I was facing two issues; one, I had exposed my face to way too much sun, damaging the absolute shite out of my face, and two, shaving was a painful ritual that left me looking like my face hand been attacked by a cheese grater. With that, my doctor suggested a simple solution, I should grow a beard. Simply put, it freed me of the torture that was shaving and would double as a natural sunscreen as well.

Little did I know that my beard, over time, would become a critical part of my identity. It led to modeling jobs and even partnerships with companies like Zeus. It even took me traveling to LA for photoshoots. What started off as attempt to save my face from further damage became a giant part of who I am.

And Then This Little Angel Came

Five years into my bearded life, I gained another identity: Dad. On January 28, 2015 I became a father to a beautiful little boy. My bearded identity deepened; I mean I own t-shirts that say, “bearded dads are the best,” “my dad’s beard is better than your dads,” or my personal favorite “they have a word for dads without beards, ‘Moms’.”

Alright, my beard was my identity feels a little dramatic, I own that, but I stand by it. That’s such a strange thing to say but I’m pretty sure that most of the guys reading this right now can relate to how that feels, especially after 10yrs of not seeing your chin. Worryingly, my own children only knew me with my beard, and I had no idea if they would even recognize me without one. Let’s be honest, I even forgot what I looked like without one, so the thought of shaving gave me anxiety.

Struggling with the Pandemic

Fast forward to two weeks ago, where we all suddenly became very aware of the reality of the word PANDEMIC. Our nation, along with the rest of the freaking world, suddenly became crippled by an enemy that did not discriminate in its targets and in the blink of an eye was everywhere. Suddenly everything changed. This hit particularly hard in my home.

You see, what I didn’t mention was that my son was born with and extremely rare genetic disorder called Prader Willi Syndrome. My son’s hypothalamus doesn’t function properly. As a result, he feels little to no pain, feels hungry 24/7, and also doesn’t run fevers like most kids. If he has a fever of 101, it’s not a spoon full of Tylenol to bring the fever down, it’s a trip to the Emergency Department at Children’s Hospital for blood work to check his CBC and his Cortisol levels. In other words, he’s immuno-compromised, which puts him in the high-risk category of this monster virus.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company I work for was deemed an essential business and I, in return, became an essential employee. This meant that I would be going to work each week, surrounded by way more people than recommended by the CDC and WHO. It was certainly far outside what the governor mandated in my home state of Ohio. This meant that every day I went to work, I ran the risk of bringing something home that could kill my son.

I’m lucky in some respects because I work for a company that acted swiftly to put safety procedures in place, and in the middle of a mask shortage was able to get me an N95 respirator. However, given my beard, my mask was a Band-Aid for a bullet wound. I was so grateful, but as I was being handed the mask, I was told that it wouldn’t work with my beard. My beard was too long and that the mask wouldn’t be effective unless I shaved or trimmed my beard way down.

Tristan’s New Routine

At the end of my shift, when I came home from work, I went through the new routine my wife and I had created to insulate my family from, well, me. I got undressed in the garage. I threw my dirty clothes straight into the washer, washed my hands thoroughly, sanitized the doorknobs, light switches, and anything else I touched when I came in. Want to talk exhausting after working the shifts I do and putting in the miles I walk every night? Putting in more effort when I come home is the last thing I want to do, but I don’t question it. It’s a simple decision, because it keeps my family safe.

So, here is where the story, and my beard, ends. I headed upstairs and took a 30 min shower. When I got out, I looked at my reflection and I realized that everything I just did was completely useless if I wasn’t being careful with the air I was breathing as well. In order to protect my son, and my family, I was faced with a choice. I could either be the bearded dad that brought home a virus that threatened his sons’ lives, or, I could “give up” my identity, trade it in for N95 mask and be the dad that sacrificed his vanity for his family.

Maybe you’ve had to face the same decision. Maybe you’ll have to down the line as this thing continues to play out. Whatever may come and whatever you decide, like with putting in all the extra work to protect my family at the end of an exhausting shift, choosing to shave the beard and trade it for a mask was one of the easiest things I’ve ever done. In the end, beards grow back, but sons don’t come back from the dead.

Meet Caley Carr: Professional Tap Dancer with a Memorable Mustache

Huntington beach native Caley Carr first stole America’s hearts when he auditioned for “So You Think You Can Dance” back in 2012. Along with his inventive tap dance moves, Carr showed off his eccentric surfer vibe and memorable mustache.

Since then, Caley Carr, 33, has danced in several viral Youtube videos, had a solo in a Nissan commercial and provided choreography and creative direction to top names like Disney, “Good Morning America,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and Hennessy.

Often working alongside his wife and fellow dancer Kelsey Carr, the couple collaborated with celebrity choreographer “Dancing With the Stars” alum Derek Hough in 2016. Together, they worked as contributing choreographers on Hough’s Emmy-nominated routine “Kairos.”

Tapping into the dance world with style

In his audition tape for “So You Think You Can Dance,” Caley Carr explains he found dance through his sister and mom. After becoming a regular at his sister’s dance practices, his mom suggested he hone his hyper nature into dance moves of his own. After all, as he pointed out in the clip, he was already there!

Thankfully, mom’s suggestion turned into a flourishing career for Carr. Starting out as a break dancer in high school, Caley Carr soon craved new styles and knowledge. “Tap dancing took the cake,” he told Zeus.

By 25-years-old, the seasoned dancer knew he wanted to take things to the professional level. Ditching his job as a bartender and his lazy days on the beach, Carr headed to Los Angeles to audition for season nine of “So You Think You Can Dance.”

Auditions and the start of the ‘stache

At this point, his iconic mustache also joined the scene. Shortly before leaving to LA for the audition, Carr went on a big surfing trip where he grew out his beard for a month.

I thought it would be funny if I shaved everything and left a mustache. At the time it was a small handle bar mustache but it was enough to catch the attention of Cat Deeley who was the host during the ninth “So You Think You Can Dance” season. -Caley Carr

During his initial audition, Carr used his combined dance background, performing to “Somebody That I Used to Know” and was quickly a favorite among the judges. He advanced to the choreography round.

Guest judge Jesse Tyler Ferguson kicked off critiques, complimenting Carr as a “crazy-mash-up of a person who has so many weird talents” that kept the actor-turned-judge entertained. Ferguson continued, calling the then 25-year-old tap dancer “fantastic” and explaining Carr has a “light within” and a “smile that is illuminating.” Judges Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe also complimented his confidence and “fresh” style, deeming his performance “terrific.”

Finding a partner to dance through life with

Shortly after appearing on “So You Think You Can Dance,” Caley Carr met a new dance partner, his now wife Kelsey McCowan.

“It’s amazing working side by side with your wife,” Carr said.

He explained the two met in Vegas while working on separate dance projects seven years ago.

Thankful for his mustache that was once cut as a joke, Carr said it was actually the thing that peaked his wife’s interest in the first place. Looking for a dance partner with a vintage vibe, Caley’s talent and style completely fit Kelsey’s bill.

The reason my wife reached out six months after we met was because of my mustache. She wanted to recreate a Fred and Ginger kind of vibe. She doesn’t even know me without a mustache. -Caley Carr

Reminiscent of 1930s dancing stars Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, the couple exudes both dance talent and a classic classiness.

He makes me feel like the happiest girl on the planet! And my God, that ‘stache is just so damn sexy,” Kelsey wrote on her Instagram page in 2015 alongside Caley’s picture for Man Crush Monday.

Dancing together ever since, the talented couple married in the summer of 2018.

When they aren’t tapping away on stage, Caley likes to catch some waves on his surfboard or take Kelsey swing dancing.

Maintaining the ‘stache on stage

Being married to a fellow performer also comes with some extra advantages, like getting useful on-stage hair styling tips. Carr said his wife taught him one tip that always keeps his hair and ‘stache looking suave.

One secret I do have, that my wife let me in on, is that day old dirty hair styles way better than fresh-washed. So, if I know I have a gig or something I need to film, I won’t wash my hair the day before. -Caley Carr

In addition to letting his hair build up a day’s worth of oil for on-stage styling, Carr explained his love of surfing helps give his style the extra edge. “Ocean water gives my hair crazy body,” he said. With many texturizing hair sprays utilizing sea salt to boost curls and provide beach waves, Carr taps into the natural version of the trend.

“One of the tougher parts is fully committing to it and really letting it grow out so you can see it at its best. I would say the hardest part is after three months with your little buddy growing and keeping your top lip warm and then admitting to yourself that this isn’t the one,” Carr said, explaining shaving can be “a little gut-wrenching” during the process.

Ultimately, Carr found that a full handlebar mustache with upturned corners ideally fit his face and vibe.

The handlebar mustache grew in popularity after World War II. In 1947, English comedian Jimmy Edwards started the Handlebar Club. The group intended to bring mustached men together for friendship and charity purposes. When it came to incorporating his personal style into his mustache choice, Carr brought his love for the time period to the forefront.

As far as my vintage vibe, it completely played a role. My love for the 1940s and this ‘stache go hand in hand. -Caley Carr

The World Beard and Moustache Championships describes Carr’s specific handlebar style as an imperial mustache. An imperial mustache is “small and bushy with the tips curled upward,” according to the competition’s website. Its curved style takes most men about three to six months to grow in fully.

Other online beard experts deem the handlebar and imperial mustaches separate styles, despite both versions curling at the corners. They argue the imperial version is often the more rugged low-maintenance mustache, while the traditional handlebar mustache is more heavily styled with wax.

Unsure if you can rock this style or other mustache variants? “The only way to know for certain is by growing it out and seeing that ‘stache on your face,” Carr advises mustache hopefuls.
