But while we’re quick to provide them with swim goggles and life jackets, there’s one safety habit that too often gets overlooked: sun protection.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and childhood sunburns can cause serious problems. Just one blistering sunburn in childhood can nearly double a person’s lifetime risk of developing melanoma, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

Fortunately, sunburn is highly preventable with the right habits and planning. As a pediatric dermatologist, I work with families every day to create sun-safe routines that are both effective and child friendly.

Sunscreen is safe and effective

One of the most frequent questions I get is: Is sunscreen safe for kids? The answer is yes — when used as directed, sunscreens are both safe and effective. For infants under 6 months, the best protection is shade and clothing. For older babies, toddlers, and children, choose a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

I typically recommend mineral sunscreens (containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) for young children and those with sensitive skin. These create a physical barrier on the skin and are less likely to cause irritation.

Apply and reapply

Sunscreen works best when used correctly. Apply a generous layer 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure, and don’t forget often-missed spots like the ears, scalp, back of the neck, and tops of the feet. Reapply every two hours or more often if your child is swimming or sweating.

Clothing is your first line of defense

While sunscreen is important, sun-protective clothing provides even better protection. Look for swim shirts (rash guards) labeled with UPF 50+ and always pair them with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection.

Remember: If you can see light through the fabric, UV rays can get through, too.

Avoid peak UV hours

Plan outdoor activities around peak sun intensity, which is usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you’re out during those hours, seek shade — whether it’s under an umbrella, tree, or stroller canopy.

Make sun safety a family habit

Children are more likely to follow sun-safe behaviors when they see their parents doing the same. Make it a habit to apply sunscreen together, wear hats as a family, and talk about why protecting your skin is important.

Sun damage is cumulative, and the habits we teach children now can protect them for a lifetime.

As a pediatric dermatologist and mother of three, I understand the challenge of keeping kids sun safe — but I also know how powerful these small actions can be. Every hat, every shirt, every ounce of sunscreen is an investment in their long-term health.

Dr. Maria Gnarra Buethe is a double-board-certified dermatologist and pediatric dermatologist. By “exploiting” the prior authorization suspension, prosecutors added, Randall and the others are accused of wrongly billing Medi-Cal tens of millions of dollars per month for the prescription drugs.

Monte Vista from May 2022 to April 2023 allegedly billed Medi-Cal for more than $269 million and was paid more than $178 million for what prosecutors described as “expensive, non-contracted drugs containing low-cost, generic ingredients.” Prosecutors allege that Randall and the others laundered the proceeds in order to hide the money from law enforcement.

The allegations against Randall are part of a countrywide “National Health Care Fraud Takedown” announced by the Justice Department act included more than 300 defendants across the United States.

“Public health programs are designed to help the sick and needy, not to help unscrupulous individuals pad their pockets,” United States Attorney Bill Essayli said in a written statement. “Working with our federal and state law enforcement partners, we will continue to crack down on those who cheat taxpayers via health care fraud.”

The U.S. Attorney’s Office also confirmed that Randall is the same healthcare marketer and former medical group owner who in 2012 pleaded guilty to his role in a $600 million spinal surgery kickback scheme.

Randall is currently being held without bond, prosecutors said. It was not immediately known if he had an attorney who could comment on the allegations.

Related Articles

Amid the terror of smash-and-grab mobs, is retail theft actually up?

Woman, 24, arrested in deadly Irvine hit-and-run a year after crash

Long Beach woman arrested after 134 cats found in van in Central California

Fullerton man arrested as 8,000 pounds of illegal fireworks seized in West Covina

A Q-tip and spotless car were key evidence linking Bryan Kohberger to murders of 4 Idaho students

‘He's worried about work.' Todd Spitzer called Chun Sit's alleged actions "repulsive," and said of the charges: “No animal deserves to be killed and then tossed aside like a piece of garbage. He became the head softball coach at Beckman High School, where his team won three division titles, and four years ago founded a summer collegiate softball league that boasts 10 competitive teams organized by his nonprofit Game Ready Enterprises.

Now, Simon is applying his skills to building a strong SCC softball team.

His coaching approach is to help athletes be their best, mentally and physically. “What’s great about softball or any sport is that you have an opportunity to use the tools of the sport to help you grow,” Simon said.

He urges players to think about their goals and define why they want to play the game.

“I love to pose questions to help them think a little bit,” he said. “If they understand what they’re doing and why, it’s going to have a lot more clarity for them to take the steps forward to improve what they’re trying to do, whether it’s in the classroom or in the field.”

Another part of his coaching philosophy is to encourage players not to fear failure. “If you’re afraid to fail, how are you going to succeed without taking that risk?” he said. “And that’s the good thing about the sport of softball and baseball. They call it a game of failure, but I say you don’t succeed until you fail. I encourage failure — that means you’re trying. If you’re not even trying, you won’t know what you’re capable of. So why not give it a shot while you’re young?”

Simon spent years in the entertainment industry where he worked as a professional stuntman. When his daughter showed interest in playing softball at age 8, Simon began to coach her and helped her train as she grew older.

“She loved the competitive aspect of the game,” he said. “From my baseball background, I got into training with her and tried to teach her the right technique of things.” She played center field in college softball and recently graduated from the University of Central Florida.

When COVID-19 hit in 2020, many young people, including Simon’s daughter, suffered from the isolation. “Some athletes were going through some pretty severe depression and difficult times mentally during that period of time,” he said. “I had a few college coaches who had athletes going through that here in Southern California.”

Several of them approached him with an idea. “They said, ‘Lou, can you create a college softball summer league where these girls feel positive again, strong again through their skills? We need something like that.’ ”

Without thinking too much about it, Simon agreed.

The result was that he founded Game Ready Enterprises with the stated purpose of helping to build mental health along with sports skill, to develop community leadership and provide career guidance for college-age girls.

The League, as it is called, has grown each summer and has been a successful and fulfilling venture. So when Simon was asked to coach the Santiago Canyon College softball team — which is part of the Orange Empire Conference — it seemed like a natural next step. “It is one of the toughest and most challenging conferences at least in California, if not in the U.S.,” he said.

He was already familiar with SCC’s field, campus and the college’s good reputation. “I knew it very well,” he said. “Everything really lined up. It was perfect timing. My heart was in it from that moment. I’ve seen all the good it can do for these kids by showing them someone cares for them. And it’s about life strength as opposed to everything being about the game. So it was a good balance for me to say, ‘Hey, I’d love to be a part of this program, and this is what I bring to the table.’ ”

Simon will continue to recruit players until the fall when they begin to train as a team in preparation for the next season, which begins in May 2026.

Although he can take about 20 players, reaching that number is not Simon’s priority in recruiting. He looks for character traits such as a willingness to learn and playing for the team. “To me, that goes a long way because it builds character, it builds the chemistry, it builds a bond with the sisterhood on our team and absolute respect,” Simon said.

Related Articles

Women’s flag football comes to Santiago Canyon College

At Cal State LA’s newest college campus in Chino, incarcerated men find a second chance

Research on Alzheimer’s, obesity, autism runs afoul of federal government

UC Irvine professor files complaint over removal as dean

Sculptures worth $2 million recovered following theft in Orange County https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/sculptures-worth-2-million-recovered-following-theft-in-orange-county/3729723/ Orange County – NBC Los Angeles urn:uuid:9987dc84-ce15-0dc0-8ce5-bf9a08a66310 Sun, 22 Jun 2025 13:01:24 +0000
An Orange County retiree made her dream of ocean living a reality when she moved onto a cruise ship for the next 15 years.

Speaking to NBCLA Tuesday from her current port in Vancouver, Sharon Lane said her decision to board the Villa Vie only took her about 10 minutes.

“Not only was it affordable to me, it would actually cost me less money to live here like this, have everyone taking care of me instead of me taking care of everybody,” said the 77-year-old retired foreign language teacher.

Lane said when her lease expired in Laguna Woods, a popular retirement community in Orange County, she decided to buy a villa onboard the Villa Vie, which the cruise line calls the “only affordable residential cruising option offering this lifestyle.”

Lane said she has also lived in Los Angeles and San Bernardino.

She moved onto the ship on June 16.

Lane didn’t want to disclose exactly how much she paid, but the company said an interior villa like hers is priced at $129,999, which is a one-time fee.
