I’ve applied for over 100 scholarships through Scholarship Owl and received a total of $0. A complete waste of time, dozens of cover letters, essays, surveys etc. for nothing in return.

Some of these scholarships have 2,000+ applicants despite offering just $250. I threw my hat in the ring hoping to be lucky but it seems like luck is not in my future.

How do I find scholarships that don’t have a massive over-saturation of applicants?

Currently using a spreadsheet but it's becoming a hot mess. I have like 25+ scholarships I'm tracking and keep missing little requirements or getting confused about which essays go where.

What do you guys use? Need something that actually works because I'm stressing about missing deadlines. Is there an app or better way to organize all the different requirements and due dates?

Also do you track application status after submitting? Half the time I have no idea if they even got my stuff.

Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks

Everything I find is either super niche or requires essays about experiences ive never had I feel like all the scholarships are designed for people who already have a perfect story to tell

As a first gen student with no family connections and barely any time it feels impossible to find ones that make sense for me. If someone knows where to start I’d appreciate it

Have a question about "financial need"

Hi, I'm a high school senior who's in a little bit of a unique situation. My parents make over 170k a year, so my fafsa index is pretty high (around 40,000 or something like that). This doesn't really take into account however, that I have a twin attending college at the same time, and that they filed for divorce this year. I've been applying to scholarships to try to see if I can do anything to help alleviate the cost, but I'm noticing that a lot of them mention demonstrating financial need. I completely understand that a lot of scholarships are meant for students who will need the money more than I do, but some of these do have tiered systems. My fafsa index is in the weird area where it's too high for public schools to consider providing me need-based aid, but low enough that private universities will. So my final question is, does that warrant me being able to say that I demonstrate financial need? Sorry for the paragraph.

What was all the 1st gen/low income hype about?

I actually had ppl say “how lucky” my family was to have 1st gen/low income status. Like admission letters and full-ride scholarships would be thrown our way just because.

So proud was accepted at top choice. Finding scholarships however, barely know where to start or what to expect. Will have to enroll before we know what $$ might come through.

That might be the hardest part of being 1st gen - not knowing who to ask because none of us have been in this world before. Thanks for the discouraged vent - feel a bit better now.

Well... there's a career I really want to pursue, but since I work, it's hard to dedicate my time to it by my own. It would be more reasonable to get some type of funding so that I can work part time and dedicate the rest of the time to studies.

It pains me every time I think about the fact that I haven't been able to study because of financial issues, I would really appreciate any type of advice!

When it comes to essays, English is not my first language, but I can still try to apply, I'm really passionate about this path I want to pursue. The career is Animation.

Canadian Scholarships with January 2026 Deadlines

1. Schulich Leader Scholarships

Deadline: January 28, 2026 (for high school nomination)

Amount: $120,000

Who is this scholarship for? This is a STEM scholarship for Canadian students. Applicants must be nominated by their high school. Students must also be set to graduate high school or cégep in the 2025/2026 academic year. Additionally students have to:

Plan to enroll in an eligible STEM program
Display the following:
- Academic excellence;
- Leadership, charisma, and creativity.
Strong consideration is given to entrepreneurial-minded students planning to pursue a career in:
- Technology;
- Engineering;
- Entrepreneurship and business enterprise;
- Applied scientific research.

From the Scholarship Donor: Schulich Leader Scholarships are Canada’s most coveted undergraduate STEM scholarships. One hundred are awarded to entrepreneurial-minded high school graduates enrolling in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math program at 20 partner universities across Canada. Half are valued at $120,000 for engineering scholarships and half are valued at $100,000* for science and math scholarships. Every high school in Canada can nominate one graduating student each year to apply for the scholarship.

2. CSA Group Undergraduate Research Scholarship

Deadline: January 31, 2026

Amount: $6,000

Who is this scholarship for? To be eligible for this prize, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Students must be enrolled in their second year or higher for full-time studies in a degree program at the undergraduate level at an accredited Canadian university or college;
Students enrolled in a certificate or diploma program are not eligible for this scholarship;
Students enrolled in a professional (e.g. MD, DDS) or graduate program are not eligible for this scholarship;
Eligibility is limited to enrollment at publicly-funded, accredited Canadian
universities and colleges.

From the Scholarship Donor: The purpose of the CSA Group Undergraduate Research Scholarship is to support undergraduate students in the pursuit of novel research related to standards. The research is to be conducted over a summer term under the direct supervision of an academic advisor. Undergraduate degree students studying at a publicly-funded, accredited Canadian college or university in their second year of study or higher are eligible to apply.

The research can be conducted in any field (e.g., engineering, social sciences, health sciences) and must include standards as a central component of the research. The research may investigate aspects of an existing standard or may explore an area for future standards development. The topic does not need to be related to an area where CSA Group already has standards.

3. Scotiabank Scholarship

Deadline: January 31, 2026

Amount: $30,000

Who is this scholarship for? This scholarship is open to domestic and international students. To be eligible, students must:

Be 17 years of age or older.
Be enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary institution by January 31, 2026.
Reside in Canada as of January 31, 2026.
Fill in the contest entry form.
