I’m a 27 yo female trying to go into nursing. I’ve been working in a clinical field for about 3 years, and am starting to try and pursue a college degree after about 9 years of not attending. I have a few basics done, but by no means am I able to pay for everything by myself. I’ve been looking around, but are there any helpful places to look for scholarships ? My FAFSA keeps recommending loans, which I outdated like to avoid if possible. Currently at a community college, any input would be beneficial!!

Nursing Scholarship

Hey Reddit. I’m a Senior in high school looking to pursue nursing. I’m a man and I’ve been told by others that men are technically a “minority” in this field and that there are tons and tons of scholarships available for them. Everything I’ve looking at are for current graduate students or people already enrolled. I have applied to colleges but have not received acceptance letter yet, I live in Massachusetts, and I’m honestly having trouble here. From what it looks like, I at least qualify for a bunch of merit scholarships from a couple of my applied school, but my family makes plenty and we are in no way in financial trouble or a low income household. I’m open to Mass. specific scholarship, nursings scholarships, men in nursing scholarship, anything. I just don’t want to miss out on opportunities because I didn’t look hard enough.

i feel like there's no scholarships for me

i don't qualify for any need-based scholarships as my mom (single mom) makes well above $200k, and i don't think i can get merit-based scholarships because i have a 3.76 unweighted GPA (haven't received my SAT score yet).

i'm a senior at a rural, private hs that does not have a college counselor, so i don't have any resources at school to ask advice from. any ideas where to look for scholarships? most of what i've found online does not apply to me.

Here’s my background:

Second-year chemical engineering student
4.0 GPA
Associated with / presented 5 research posters
Contributed to 3 research projects
Strong letters of recommendation: one from a well-known nanomedicine entrepreneur, one from a director of preclinical science, and one from my PI
Some industry recognition tied to my research contributions
Officially nominated by my university for Goldwater

Given this profile, do sophomores with similar experience typically stand a solid chance? Or is junior standing still overwhelmingly favored regardless of credentials?

it's really competitive, and i dont want to waste letter of reccomendations on it. however getting a 1k prize doesn't seem impossible... i'm just unsure because i'm applying to so many programs that need LORs, and my school is very small so i have to alternate between like 3 teachers (only ones who know english well)

Not sure if this is useful, but I promised myself I’d share the process once things settled. I scored a 1550 on the SAT this cycle and ended up getting a merit scholarship at tetr and accepted as soon i read that email, hehe.

what helped me was:

1/ writing one clear story about why I wanted to study abroad 2/ keeping my extracurriculars focused instead of random 3/ emailing admissions early (this actually matters more than people think) 4/ applying way before the deadline

scholarship is all about being a consistent applicant with a narrative that makes sense.

If anyone else is applying this cycle and confused about merit vs need-based vs external scholarships, happy to share the links I used.

Pro tip for the people who actually write their scholarship essays

Lots of people send in ai generated essays, ive seen multiple winning clearly ai written essays (checked through gptzero and they come out to 100% ai). It pmo so bad for the students like me who actually put the time and work into our essays so I made a spare email and for all the scholarships im applying to that dont have it listed that ai isnt allowed I send an ANONYMOUS email strongly suggesting that they add it to their list of requirements and why I think they should do so, also making sure to note that I dont think essays w ai % under 20 should be disqualified since ai detectors are sometimes wrong. Eliminates the competition in a moral non-shady way.

Edit: I dont have time to reply to all the comments so im adding this a lot of the issues brought up aren't prevalent enough for me to change my mind fully although I dont (and never have) believe that the use of ai is entirely wrong I dont want to unecessarily work for something that a robot is going to beat me to anyways. If I get a reply that they wont be detecting for ai/they dont add it to their site im just going to generate an ai essay for their scholarship too since I know that I my storytelling and articulation arent good as ai's.

Deadline: January 28, 2026 (for high school nomination)

Amount: $120,000

Who is this scholarship for? This is a STEM scholarship for Canadian students. Applicants must be nominated by their high school. Students must also be set to graduate high school or cégep in the 2025/2026 academic year. Additionally students have to:

Plan to enroll in an eligible STEM program
Display the following:
- Academic excellence;
- Leadership, charisma, and creativity.
Strong consideration is given to entrepreneurial-minded students planning to pursue a career in:
- Technology;
- Engineering;
- Entrepreneurship and business enterprise;
- Applied scientific research.

From the Scholarship Donor: Schulich Leader Scholarships are Canada’s most coveted undergraduate STEM scholarships. One hundred are awarded to entrepreneurial-minded high school graduates enrolling in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math program at 20 partner universities across Canada. Half are valued at $120,000 for engineering scholarships and half are valued at $100,000* for science and math scholarships. Every high school in Canada can nominate one graduating student each year to apply for the scholarship.

2. CSA Group Undergraduate Research Scholarship

Deadline: January 31, 2026

Amount: $6,000

Who is this scholarship for? To be eligible for this prize, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Students must be enrolled in their second year or higher for full-time studies in a degree program at the undergraduate level at an accredited Canadian university or college;
Students enrolled in a certificate or diploma program are not eligible for this scholarship;
Students enrolled in a professional (e.g. MD, DDS) or graduate program are not eligible for this scholarship;
Eligibility is limited to enrollment at publicly-funded, accredited Canadian
universities and colleges.

From the Scholarship Donor: The purpose of the CSA Group Undergraduate Research Scholarship is to support undergraduate students in the pursuit of novel research related to standards. The research is to be conducted over a summer term under the direct supervision of an academic advisor. Undergraduate degree students studying at a publicly-funded, accredited Canadian college or university in their second year of study or higher are eligible to apply.

The research can be conducted in any field (e.g., engineering, social sciences, health sciences) and must include standards as a central component of the research. The research may investigate aspects of an existing standard or may explore an area for future standards development. The topic does not need to be related to an area where CSA Group already has standards.

3. Scotiabank Scholarship

Deadline: January 31, 2026

Amount: $30,000

Who is this scholarship for? This scholarship is open to domestic and international students. To be eligible, students must:

Be 17 years of age or older.
Be enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary institution by January 31, 2026.
Reside in Canada as of January 31, 2026.
Fill in the contest entry form.
