Master electrician Heath Eastman was happy to help. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. After noticing his neighbors’ living rooms were brighter than his own, a homeowner decided to install a set of sconces over his fireplace mantle. With the help of master electrician Heath Eastman, the two were able to install a new light switch and a set of new sconces to brighten things up. Where to find it? Sconces Installed: Modern 1-Light Brass Gold Wall Sconce with Open Cylinder Clear Glass [https://homedepot.sjv.io/APE5WD] Lightbulbs: 40-Watt Candelabra Dim White Filament Clear Glass LED 2700K [https://homedepot.sjv.io/Z6yEQW] Heath used a Tempo 508S-G wire finder [https://homedepot.sjv.io/WyGEqn] to locate the dead wire and old light box behind the wall. To find the access point for the sconce wires from the basement, Heath took a metal insulation support wire, cut to a sharp point. He used that to drill a small hole in the crevice of the baseboard to find the baseboard’s location from the basement ceiling. Wax putty can be used to fill in the hole and it will be completely unnoticeable. Heath used a power drill [https://homedepot.sjv.io/anv2bZ] with a wood spade bit [https://homedepot.sjv.io/MANEAN] to drill access holes from the basement ceiling for the wires. A steel fish tape [https://homedepot.sjv.io/anBdxZ] was used to confirm that the access point went all the way through to the sconce light location and to pull the wire to the light box locations. For wire Heath used 14/2 NM-B wire [https://homedepot.sjv.io/mO20DD]. He used plastic insulated staples [https://homedepot.sjv.io/PO6nOq] to secure the wire to the joists. To cut out the drywall, Heath used an oscillating tool [https://homedepot.sjv.io/ZQPVk0] with a drywall bit. A dust collector [https://homedepot.sjv.io/19Wz96] attached to a HEPA vacuum [https://homedepot.sjv.io/POrgjQ] was used to collect debris. Heath installed a Lutron LED dimmer light switch [https://homedepot.sjv.io/WyGEOO]. Looking for more step by step guidance on how to complete projects around the house? Paint expert Mauro Henrique came up with a plan and chose the right products and techniques for the job. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. High-traffic areas take a lot of abuse. When it’s a staircase, the traffic is condensed to an even smaller area. When that traffic is caused by two big dogs, the abuse can be intense. When a homeowner grew tired of his dogs gouging and scratching his steps, it was time for an upgrade. Mauro Henrique helped prep and paint the steps and handrails so they could withstand years of traffic. Where to find it? The stair treads and handrails worked on were unfinished wood. The stair treads had a lot of scratches and marks, so Mauro used a 120-grit sandpaper [https://homedepot.sjv.io/e1Av7j] on a power sander [https://homedepot.sjv.io/R53n3b] connected to a HEPA vacuum [https://homedepot.sjv.io/POrgjQ]. 220 – 320 grit sandpaper was used all over afterwards. The same grit sandpaper was also used on the handrails. N95 masks [https://homedepot.sjv.io/qz2BQL] and safety glasses [https://homedepot.sjv.io/0ZkGbY] were worn while sanding. And before every coat of primer and paint, the area should be lightly sanded with 220 to 320 grit sandpaper and vacuumed. Drop cloths [https://homedepot.sjv.io/N96mdK] were used to protect the floor and stair treads when they were not being worked on. Painter's tape [https://homedepot.sjv.io/1roGjD] can be used to protect the balusters, risers, and skirtboards. Mauro used a quart of an oil-based primer for both the treads and handrail. Oil-based primers are ideal for untreated wood. For the handrail and post, Mauro used a semi-gloss white paint [https://homedepot.sjv.io/Qj6Wq3] that is good for high-traffic areas. Paints made for trim, cabinets, and doors work well for something like a handrail that will be touched a lot. Glossier finishes are easier to clean and are more durable than flat finishes. For the stair treads, Mauro used a high gloss white floor [https://homedepot.sjv.io/gOW4z9] interior and exterior paint. A floor paint made for interior and exterior uses is ideal for stairs. Especially for the stairs Mauro worked on that are right next to the front door and in a home with two large dogs that will be constantly using the stairs after being outside. With some exotic materials and a steady hand, Tom turns a beautiful square bowl with four legs that really stands on its own. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. General contractor and experienced woodturner Tom Silva loves carving and shaping wood into objects. But, when he told host Kevin O’Connor that he was planning to turn a square bowl, Kevin couldn’t believe it. With the right materials and a steady hand, it’s possible, and Tom shows Kevin how it’s done. Where to find it? Tom and Kevin turn a square bowl with legs out of Bubinga wood [https://bit.ly/4hoZwPv]. Be sure to sharpen lathe tools when necessary, using a sharpening machine. When turning on a lathe machine [https://homedepot.sjv.io/GKZXWL], wear a face shield [https://homedepot.sjv.io/JKmbPE] and ear protection [https://homedepot.sjv.io/GK0kDB]. Tom is using Bubinga wood which is an African hardwood species. Start by squaring up the block of wood [https://homedepot.sjv.io/YRyDej] on the table saw [https://homedepot.sjv.io/PyN2Qq]. Find the center of the wood and use a hand drill [https://homedepot.sjv.io/anv2bZ] to make a hole to mount to the woodworm screw on the chuck. Once the block of wood is mounted start by forming the bottom and legs of the bowl using a bowl gouge and scraper [https://homedepot.sjv.io/nX2k5X]. Create a recessed notch in order to connect the bottom of the bowl to the chuck on the lathe machine. Hand sand the bottom of the bowl using a 150-220 grit sandpaper [https://homedepot.sjv.io/e1Av7j]. Once the bowl is smooth and wiped clean of dust, apply a layer of food safe finishing oil [https://homedepot.sjv.io/OemBxN] before turning the bowl over on the chuck. After flipping the bowl on the lathe machine, use the bowl gouge to carve out the inside of the bowl. Once the inside of the bowl depth is established, use a scraper to smooth the notches out for a smooth finish. Use a hand detail sander to finely smooth the bowl before applying finishing oil to the inside of the bowl. Looking for more step by step guidance on how to complete projects around the house? SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse. Part of a homeowner’s kitchen renovation was removing the wall between the kitchen and the dining. While this created one bright, open space, it also meant removing wallpaper and stripping the paint from the existing wainscoting in the dining room. At a standstill, he called the team at Ask This Old House for help, and paint expert Mauro Henrique knew just how to help. Where to find it? Mauro started by removing dust and debris from the wainscoting with a vacuum [https://homedepot.sjv.io/POrgjQ] and a tack cloth [https://homedepot.sjv.io/GmkB79]. He then lined the top and bottom of the wainscoting with painter’s tape [https://homedepot.sjv.io/xL2jAv]. To protect the floor around the wainscoting he used floor protection paper [https://homedepot.sjv.io/19DMEm] and to protect the wall above it he used pre-taped painter’s plastic [https://homedepot.sjv.io/XYo4PG]. With the area cleaned and protected, Mauro used a Titan 440 Airless Sprayer [https://bit.ly/40JAZh5] with a 315 nozzle to apply a coat of primer [https://homedepot.sjv.io/o4Xgjm] to the wainscoting. To spray, Mauro put on glasses [https://homedepot.sjv.io/55MGb2], a mask with a respirator [https://homedepot.sjv.io/m5xWma], and coveralls [https://homedepot.sjv.io/3J9aeM]. After letting the primer dry for 1-2 hours, Mauro used wood filler [https://homedepot.sjv.io/bODKbk] and caulk [https://homedepot.sjv.io/LXAOPM] to fill holes and cracks in the wainscoting and then sanded it smooth with sanding blocks [https://homedepot.sjv.io/MADv0o]. Mauro then used the sprayer to apply two even coats of white paint [https://homedepot.sjv.io/qzEvDL], waiting 1-2 hours for each coat to dry.
