Do Saunas Need Front Heaters?

One of the critical elements in choosing an infrared sauna is the locations of the heaters. The emissivity and power of the heating elements is critical, but their location is an area that many brands struggle to utilize.

An interesting trend is that of luxury hotels and resorts have been adding infrared saunas as well as the traditional Finnish style. This is a trend that we welcome. And it includes traditional and established resorts usually steeped in the tradition of Finnish only. Pools, spas, hot tubs, infrared and steam are joined together to offer guests a myriad of choices as they seek to relax.

Some have resisted the inclusion of modern cabins in a part of the world that has long held the traditional view of hot steam rooms and baths being the only true spa experience.

We know that infrared saunas provide tremendous health benefits. As more consumers are educated, they have become increasingly popular and more often a topic of conversation. A friend of mine first had one in his home over 20 years ago along with a hot tub. He informed me at that time that his guests had very quizzical looks when seeing these in his home.

However, today, when anyone visits our home, one of their first comments is regarding the Clearlight corner sauna we have in the living room. Most people are somewhat familiar with what it is and how it works. Recently, a doctor friend visited and immediately commented that he had just purchased one the prior month (with some help from this review website, of course, as he finally begrudgingly admitted).

We are excited about some great updates right around the corner. We are fortunate enough to be able to regularly talk with the CEOs, owners and salespeople of some of the best brands. But first, here is a tremendous story reported just last week. It highlights that some local Springfield Firefighters were given a sauna to help detox from the many harmful substances they are exposed to as a normal part of their daily job:

Springfield Firefighters have a new tool to combat potentially dangerous toxins that could hurt their health.
The Springfield Office of Clark Schaefer Hackett donated a sauna to Station One in an effort to help firefighters sweat anything harmful they pick up while fighting fires.
“We were fortunate enough to take advantage of a grant process,” Springfield Fire Chief Brian Miller said. “It’s cutting-edge pioneer kind of technology where the concept is firefighters, after a fire, need to detoxify and remove all of the carcinogens or potential carcinogens in the smoke from their body.”
A pamphlet handed out an event showcasing the new saunas says toxins and soot from the smoke and fire can remain on firefighters’ ski after a fire and can be absorbed into their bodies. The protocol is the firefighters take a shower after a fire to remove the carcinogens on their skin as a result of the smoke. The firefighters then use the infrared therapy followed by a ride on an exercise bike. Although it was not noted as the final step, we are, of course, hoping the last step is for another shower as a courtesy to the others around them.

Health Benefits Promoted in Washington Post This Month

Several large sauna studies have determined that the practice is linked to lower blood pressure and decreased artery stiffness. In addition, subjects who visit a sauna four to seven times a week have 60 percent lower rates of heart disease and stroke than those who visit just once a week.

Joyous Gear Guide: Our Tools for In-House Photography and Video

Over the last few months Joy and I noticed a lot more questions about the type of equipment and tools we use for our photography and videos shoots over here at Joyous Health. 95% of the photo’s and videos we shoot are all done in-house, and by in-house, I mean by me (unless we get fancy and include our design guru Carol).

A couple of quick notes before we get started:

I don’t claim to be a professional in either photography or videography, but instead someone who googled a hell-of-a-lot, watched a few Youtube videos and got a few pointers from people who actually know what they’re doing like the awesome Chris Bodnar. Oh, and I took a lot of bad photos / videos before they got somewhat good – practice makes perfect!

Some of the equipment we own is on the expensive side – far more than what we started off with. Don’t be discouraged by the price bracket. You can get awesome results with gear at a fraction of the price we have. I look at our gear as an investment and since we use it for business purposes as well it made sense to upgrade (plus, I like new toys :)) That said – it’s more important to know HOW to use the equipment than anything else – regardless of price point.
This is not a technical review – there are LOTS of those out there for many of the items I’ll outline below. My comments are simply based on my own experience and opinion.
As I mentioned earlier, this is the equipment that works best for US. It’s important to do the research to make sure you end up getting what’s going to be best for you.

Camera – Sony A7RII

I’m in love with this camera – it’s simply the best I’ve ever used. With 42 megapixels it’s great for food photography because it allows you to start with a wider shot and crop in afterwards to nail the composition without losing resolution.

From a video perspective, it shoots 4K (super HD), performs well in different lighting conditions and has as great auto-focus feature for when Joy’s running around the kitchen.

Being a mirror-less design, it’s also far more compact that other comparable DSLR’s out there.

Previous cameras we’ve used:

Sony A7R: Great camera that excelled at video but for food photography my current camera is better.
Canon EOS Rebel SL1: A great starter camera to learn the basics but you’ll notice a huge improvement in quality of video and photos when you’re ready to upgrade.

Lens – Sony G-Master 24-70 2.8

Again, my favourite lens I’ve owned so far. It’s amazingly sharp and versatile given the zoom aspect. It’s the only lens I currently own and really the only one I’ve needed for our purposes – so far.

The world of lenses is incredibly complex and there are so many options.

Previous lenses:

Sony Zeiss 55mm 1.8
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens

Audio – Audio Technica ATW 1701-L + Zoom H5

People are more likely to sit through a crappy, pixelated video than one with crappy sound.

The upgrade from an in-camera microphone to a separate, dedicated unit made a bigger difference than any upgrade in camera ever did. Who knew, a $30 wired mic could make SUCH A BIG DIFFERENCE.

Today we use an Audio Technica wireless lavalier mic (no wires between performer and camera) because it offers more freedom, especially for more of the active (ie. cooking) shoots we do.

Having a dedicated recorder like the Zoom H5 further enhances the audio and also allows us to hook up 2 mics for when we have guests.

We also have a Rode Shotgun mic kicking around.

Lights

We use Boling LED lights (x2) for our video shoots. They seem to do the job, but lighting is probably the weakest part of my production game. Any thoughts would be awesome!

Whiteboard

Yep – foam core is a photographers best friend. This $10 piece can make a world of difference in your photos be helping to reduce the hard shadows often caused by direct sunlight or interior lights. Place it opposite the primary light source so it reflects some of that light back on the subject to better illuminate it.

Post Production

Capturing the footage is only half the battle. These are the programs we use to process the images / video.

These programs are SO powerful and I know I’m barely scratching the surface of their potential. With that said, I can do most of what I want to do and whatever I can’t, I google!

Joyous Detox Book Launch Party Pics!

This past Tuesday we had my Joyous Detox book launch party! It was a private event at Hotel Ocho in Toronto. It is truly a dream come true to be hearing how much people are loving Joyous Detox and my recipes. It was a joyous evening of celebration!

I wanted to share my “thank you” speech along with photos from the event with you in this post. If it reads a little funny, it’s because it’s literally what I said so please excuse any bad grammar.

First of all, thank you to you — my joyous community! Whether you’re a new reader to joyous health or you’ve been part of the community for a long time, I’m grateful for your comments, questions and support. I do what I do because of YOU.

Joyous Detox was written for everyone and anyone who wants to feel better by eating damn delicious whole foods that are detoxifying. For me, detoxing isn’t a time limited, forced deprivation idea. It’s truly a lifestyle. I created my book to share with you daily detox rituals and recipes to live the detox lifestyle. The feedback I’m getting is that you truly see and feel a difference in your energy, digestion, skin, emotional wellness and feel well… and for lack of a better word it seems that people are feeling JOYOUS!!!

Joyous Detox wasn’t written by only me. It was written by every single person who has ever inspired me, supported me and challenged me.

A book comes together not by one person, but through the collaboration of like-minded awesome people.

I’ve had the pleasure and luck of being surrounded by bad ass people who cheer me on when I need it and also keep me grounded.

This book would not even exist if it wasn’t for my editor at Penguin Random House, Andrea. Andrea is an amazing editor because she really does let the author bloom. With her guidance and vision Joyous Detox was born at the end of 2014.

And the large majority of the first half was written when I was pregnant with Vienna — which is why editing is necessary, haha! (Mama brain is real). I remember when I started writing it, I thought 2017 seemed forever away and here we are!

Thank you to the whole Penguin Randomhouse team, including Trish my publicist who is a ray of sunshine.

Thank you to my fierce literally agent Rick, who is always looking out for my best interests.

Thank you to all my recipe testers especially Laura Stolf and her beautiful family. This is her sweet daughter Julia below.

Thank you to my parents – the fiercest cheerleaders anyone could ever ask for. I don’t know how I ended up being so lucky having parents like them. They have set an incredibly positive example for me for as long as I can remember… to be optimistic, loving, and enjoy the simple pleasures in life, like a good meal and good hugs. But of all the things they’ve taught me, the one that means the most that they’ve done without awareness is taught me the power of kindness through their kindness towards each other.

There’s someone who literally co-authored every word and every recipe. She also taste tested everything and was always cheering me on with her nuzzles, pokes and dance moves. That person is small but mighty and her name is Vienna, our baby girl who is 16 months. I was pregnant with Vienna for the large majority of writing this book and creating in the kitchen and shooting all the recipes. I can’t wait to create magic in the kitchen with her. Thank you Vienna for cheering me on!

Vienna wasn’t at the party because it was past her bedtime But she was definitely there in spirit!

I saved the best for last and that’s to my hubs, loves, business partner Walker. First off, I had nothing to do with this party (other than the recipes which were sampled) Walker did it all and never once did I detect even a single speck of stress. I don’t know how he does it. Walker always makes shit happen and never ever complains.

Thank you Walker for always pushing me to be my best, for giving me the best hugs, for being an incredible dad to Vienbean and for being subjected to all my recipe testing and food experiments. This book is dedicated to you because you are my sunshine.

Walker is one half of Joyous Health, literally. You might know this by now if you’ve been a reader for a while but Walker takes all the food photos for the blog! He also manages the day to day business at JH. He’s a busy guy! Aaaaaand, the website will be relaunching with a brand new look too, very soon!

Meet Rachel: Our Newest Joyous Team Member!

I’m absolutely joyous to announce that we have found the perfect Community Manager, jack-of-all-trades and holistic nutritionist to join our small but mighty team.

Welcome to Joyous Health, Rachel!

We hired Rachel because she’s a smart cookie, creative and very enthusiastic. She’s also beaming with good vibes and good ideas and when you work in a small office this is extremely important!

I asked her a bunch of questions so you could get to know her a little better. And be sure to check back because she’s going to share her recipe for Sweet Potato Veggie Pad Thai in a couple of weeks. Her blog is full of plenty of wonderful ideas for healthy, holistic living.

Here’s my little Q&A with Rachel, enjoy!

Joy: What is your favourite superfood?

Rachel: The chocolate lover in me is going to say Raw Cacao! There’s just something so gratifying about knowing I’m technically eating chocolate and I’m supporting my health at the same time. Raw Cacao is packed with antioxidants (it’s said to have over 40 times the antioxidants of blueberries), loaded with magnesium (which my sore CrossFit-y muscles adore) and acts as a natural mood elevator or anti-depressant. There’s also so many things you can do with Cacao from using it in your baking, elixirs, hot chocolates, or smoothies!

Joy: Why did you decide to study holistic nutrition?

Rachel: I’ve always had an interest in health – I think it stemmed from a short bout with an eating disorder back when I was 13 – but I was too much of a scaredy-cat at the time to pursue it full on, not knowing what the career outcomes looked like. I went on to work in advertising after where I suffered from far too many panic attacks, anxiety, constant high stress and the numbing effects of the Friday afternoon Tim Horton’s donut run. It didn’t take me long to realize that this wasn’t how I wanted my career to look like for the rest of my life. I heard a great quote once that said “Whatever you do, think about or research in your spare time – go and do that.” So I took the plunge and went forth with my studies at The Institute of Holistic Nutrition and now here I am – happy as a clam! I truly couldn’t imagine doing anything else!

Joy: What is your favourite way to boost your energy?

Rachel: As a holistic nutritionist, you start to program your life to optimize how you can have the utmost energy, the best sleep and the greatest poops. To boost my energy on the daily, I start my day with a CrossFit workout (which I say is better than anything coffee could ever do) and I really tune into my diet. I know that too many grains at lunch will make me sleepy in the afternoon, or not having enough fats and protein in the morning will lead to an energy lull mid-morning. But to boost my energy on a whim, I do these things called spinal rolls. They were my go-to during my advertising days. I would go into a bathroom stall, start standing with my feet hip width apart, and start rolling my head down starting from the top of the vertebrae, all the way to the bottom until my body was folded in half with my arms hanging lip (sometimes holding them up so I’m not cleaning the bathroom floor with them). I’d hang out there for about 20 seconds then roll back on up. Hello, head rush and mind blowing energy!

Joy: How do you de-stress?

Rachel: Breathing has been a life saver when it comes to de-stressing. It’s crazy how it can instantly calm your mind. I’ll step away from whatever I’m doing, close my eyes and take a deep breath in for five seconds and a deep breath out for another five seconds and repeat that five times. Other ways I like to de-stress are by sipping an adaptogenic tea, strumming my guitar (which I keep by my desk), doing a 10 minute meditation (the Headspace app is great!) or snuggling with my cat Franka if he’s within reach (I’m OBSESSED!).

Joy: What are you most excited about working at JH?

Rachel: Enhancing my skills as a relationship mediator (joking!), doing different tasks day in and day out, thinking up new ideas and being able to test and launch them in the same day, having the opportunity to wear multiple hats, optimizing both of my skills as a Social Media Manager and a Holistic Nutritionist, being able to laugh and work alongside inspiring and brilliant people, getting mid-day snuggles from our JH employee-in-training, Vienna (that is, if she ever decides I’m not a scary monster of a human), crunching down on all of the yummy Genuine Health Fermented Vegan Protein Bars and sipping on even yummier Joyous Detox tea (take that 20 year old coffee/mud making machine!). In other words, there’s really nothing that doesn’t excite me about working at JH!

Joy: What do you like to do for fun?

Rachel: I love to get messy in the kitchen whether it’s creating new recipes or following the brilliance of other people’s – I’m having a blast making my way through the recipes in Joyous Detox right now! On weekends you can usually find me riding the streetcar to a new place in the city, walking around and trying out some local healthy eats! If not that, I’m hanging with my love bug, my fam jam (especially my twin sister!), socializing with pals or up at our family cottage straight chillaxing!

Joy: Do you have a vice?

Rachel: Chocolate – definitely chocolate. But with all of it’s antioxidants, magnesium and healthy fats, can we really call it a vice? If not chocolate, it’s Bonterrra ‘s Organic Cabernet Sauvignon. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, man it’s good!

Joy: Any health hacks up your sleeve you want to share with the Joyous readers?

Rachel: Just eat real whole foods – plain and simple! ☺ It took me a long time to figure that one out (honestly!) but once I did, my body was finally getting the nutrients it needed and things like cravings, bloating or my urge to overeat went away.

I also discovered how delicious whole food-based versions of my favourite foods can be. In fact, stay tuned for my Sweet Potato Veggie Pad Thai recipe that will be coming to the blog in a couple of weeks! That, and drinking a butt load of water everyday (yes, a butt load!). I’m a Holistic Nutritionist at a natural health clinic part-time and the Naturopath and I always joke about how at least 50% of cases can be resolved simply by drinking more water. Grab a lemon wedge or your favourite fruit, plop it in there and get sipping!
