Discover insights and strategies to navigate these obstacles in today's economic landscape.
Small business confidence dipped in September, signaling renewed concern among entrepreneurs over inflation, supply chains, and hiring challenges. According to the latest report from the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the Small Business Optimism Index fell two points to 98.8 — the first decline in three months — though it remains above the survey’s 52-year average of 98.

The report also noted that the Uncertainty Index climbed seven points to 100, the fourth-highest reading in more than five decades.

“Optimism among small business owners decreased in September,” said NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg. “While most owners evaluate their own business as currently healthy, they are having to manage rising inflationary pressures, slower sales expectations, and ongoing labor market challenges. Although uncertainty is high, small business owners remain resilient as they seek to better understand how policy changes will impact their operations.”

For many entrepreneurs, inflation remains a persistent headache. Fourteen percent of owners identified inflation as their most significant problem — up three points from August — with higher input costs and supply chain issues leading the concerns. Nearly one-third of owners (31%) said they plan to raise prices over the next three months, signaling that cost pressures are not easing.

Supply chain problems also worsened, with 64% of small business owners reporting disruptions in September, a 10-point jump from the previous month. Inventory levels also shifted sharply, with the number of owners viewing their stocks as “too low” dropping by seven points — the largest monthly decline in the survey’s history.

Despite these challenges, small business owners reported an uptick in profits, with actual earnings changes reaching their highest level since December 2021. A net negative 16% reported profit declines, a modest improvement that suggests businesses are adapting to higher costs through pricing adjustments or improved efficiency.

Hiring continues to be a mixed picture. Eighteen percent of owners cited labor quality as their top concern, tying with taxes as the most frequently mentioned problem. About 32% of small business owners reported job openings they couldn’t fill, unchanged from August. Of those hiring or attempting to hire, 88% said they found few or no qualified applicants. Still, hiring plans edged up slightly — 16% plan to create new jobs in the next three months, the highest level since January.

Wages also remain under pressure. A net 31% of small business owners reported raising compensation, and 19% plan further increases in the next three months. Labor costs ranked as the most pressing issue for 11% of owners, up three points from August.

Investment activity held steady, with 56% of small business owners making capital outlays in the past six months. Most of that spending went toward equipment, vehicles, and facility improvements. However, only 21% plan future capital outlays — a historically weak figure that suggests caution in the months ahead.

Borrowing costs are also climbing. The share of owners paying higher interest rates rose to 7%, with average short-term loan rates hitting 8.8%. More owners reported difficulty securing credit, a sign that tighter financial conditions may be squeezing growth plans.

When asked about the overall health of their businesses, 11% of owners said “excellent” and 57% said “good,” while 27% described their business as “fair.” Only 4% rated their business health as “poor.”

Taxes continue to be a significant concern, cited by 18% of owners as their biggest problem. Government regulations and red tape fell to 6%, while poor sales (10%) and competition from larger businesses (5%) remained stable.

Overall, the report paints a picture of cautious resilience among small businesses — a group facing rising costs, persistent labor shortages, and uncertainty over future policy. Still, many remain optimistic that conditions can improve with stable demand and clearer economic signals.

The full NFIB report is available on the organization’s website at here.

Image via Envanto

This article, "Small Business Optimism Slips as Inflation and Uncertainty Rise" was first published on Small Business Trends
Salesforce Unveils Agentforce 360, Revolutionizing AI and Human Collaboration https://smallbiztrends.com/salesforce-unveils-agentforce-360-revolutionizing-ai-and-human-collaboration/ Small Business News, Tips, Advice - Small Business Trends urn:uuid:bef7e166-fe12-211e-91a0-368edc3543ef Tue, 21 Oct 2025 19:10:54 +0300 Discover how Salesforce's Agentforce 360 transforms the landscape of AI and human collaboration, enhancing productivity and customer engagement with innovative solutions.
Salesforce is making significant strides in the realm of artificial intelligence with its recent introduction of Agentforce 360 at Dreamforce 2025. This innovative platform aims to redefine how businesses operate by integrating humans and AI in a way that enhances productivity rather than replacing human jobs. As small business owners face an ever-changing landscape, understanding this technology and its implications becomes crucial.

Agentforce 360 is described as the world’s first platform designed to seamlessly connect employees and AI agents within a single, trusted system. This integration means that every employee can achieve more every day, every interaction with customers can yield better outcomes, and businesses can operate with exceptional efficiency. As Marc Benioff, Chair and CEO of Salesforce, puts it, “Agentforce 360 connects humans, agents, and data on one trusted platform, helping every employee and every company achieve more than they ever thought possible.”

The surge towards the “Agentic Enterprise” model comes amid heightened interest in leveraging AI for improved operational intelligence. By using a 24/7 intelligent framework, business teams can ensure no sales lead goes unnoticed, service quality remains high irrespective of time, and every team member has an AI partner to assist in decision-making.

Small businesses can derive numerous benefits from adopting Agentforce 360. For instance, the platform includes several advanced features designed to simplify workloads and enhance operational flow. Key offerings include a new conversational builder, hybrid reasoning capabilities that lead to accurate data interpretations, and voice technology that allows for real-time interactions. These innovations allow employees to focus on high-value activities, while routine and repetitive tasks are managed by AI agents.

Real-world use cases illustrate how Agentforce 360 has already yielded impressive results. Reddit managed to deflect 46% of support cases, resulting in a drastic reduction in resolution time from 8.9 to 1.4 minutes. Such efficiency boosts customer satisfaction and can significantly improve the cost structure for small businesses. Similarly, Adecco utilized AI agents to handle over half of candidate communication outside regular working hours, enabling recruiters to concentrate on more strategic engagements.

However, small business owners must consider some potential challenges before fully embracing Agentforce 360. First and foremost, integrating AI technologies may require upfront investment in terms of time and resources. There is also the factor of change management; transitioning to an AI-augmented workplace necessitates training and adjustment to new workflows for employees. As AI takes over routine tasks, there may be concerns among staff about job displacement, making it crucial for owners to foster a culture that views AI as an augmentation, not a replacement.

Moreover, small businesses must ensure they have the right data architecture in place. Agentforce 360 leverages a unified data layer known as Data 360, which facilitates effective context and understanding derived from existing data. This transition may require changes to current systems and processes, making planning and execution fundamental to a successful implementation.

As Marc Benioff emphasized, “We’re entering the age of the Agentic Enterprise — where AI elevates human potential like never before.” Such transformative changes may feel overwhelming, but the benefits could substantially tilt the operational balance toward greater efficiency and customer connection.

For small business owners eagerly exploring ways to enhance their operations in today’s competitive market, embracing Agentforce 360 could unlock new avenues for growth. The intersection of human capabilities and AI-driven technology could help them streamline processes and focus more on strategic initiatives that promote overall business success.

In light of these advancements, it’s wise for small businesses to remain proactive and informed about the technologies that could shape their future. To explore further about Agentforce 360 and how it might fit into their operational strategies, business owners can refer to the original Salesforce announcement here.

This article, "Salesforce Unveils Agentforce 360, Revolutionizing AI and Human Collaboration" was first published on Small Business Trends
Zoom Expands AI Tools in Spaces to Power Smarter Hybrid Work https://smallbiztrends.com/zoom-expands-ai-tools-in-spaces-to-power-smarter-hybrid-work/ Small Business News, Tips, Advice - Small Business Trends urn:uuid:36a3eb55-dc71-88f6-a9da-f527e0d88ff5 Tue, 21 Oct 2025 17:10:02 +0300 Discover how Zoom's latest AI innovations are set to revolutionize collaboration in the workplace, enhancing productivity and communication through cutting-edge technology.
Small businesses are constantly navigating the evolving landscape of remote and hybrid work. With AI-driven upgrades such as photo check-in for Visitor Management and an AI Companion for Zoom Rooms, small businesses can now leverage cutting-edge technology to improve collaboration and productivity.

Jeff Smith, Zoom’s head of Product for Workplace AI, Meetings, and Spaces, emphasized the transformative potential of these innovations. “The future of office work is being revolutionized. Zoom Spaces transform how we think about collaboration by creating dynamic environments where innovation and productivity aren’t limited by physical presence,” he stated. This offers a compelling glimpse into how businesses can remain competitive in a fast-paced digital world.

The introduction of photo check-in for Visitor Management is particularly beneficial for small businesses that may not have extensive resources for security and visitor tracking. This feature allows employees to verify visitors through pictures, ensuring a smooth entry process while enhancing security protocols. By simplifying visitor management, businesses can create a more welcoming experience for clients and partners, thus fostering better relationships.

Small business owners will also find value in the Recorder with AI Companion for Zoom Rooms. This feature enables comprehensive meeting documentation, allowing for easy access to discussions and key decisions made during meetings. “Zoom Spaces is fostering a more connected, inclusive workspace that adapts to how modern teams actually work,” Smith added. Transitioning to AI-first environments may require training for employees, particularly those who are less tech-savvy. Ensuring that staff can effectively utilize these new features will be critical for maximizing their benefits. Moreover, small businesses may face initial costs associated with upgrading existing systems or integrating new technologies into their operations.

As remote and hybrid work continues to be a dominant trend, Zoom’s innovations provide small business owners with the tools necessary for success. These enhancements not only improve internal operations but also allow businesses to adapt to the needs of a modern workforce. The ability to foster connection, regardless of physical location, can be a game-changer for small companies striving to maintain competitive advantage in an increasingly digital world.

Robust features like photo check-in and enhanced recording capabilities equip businesses with the essentials for efficient collaboration. Conducted between July 25 and August 3, 2025, the survey sampled 3,573 full-time workers across the U.S., offering a snapshot of sentiments and preferences that can help businesses adapt their strategies in this evolving landscape.

The findings underscore a significant shift in employee expectations and workplace culture, driven by the ongoing effects of the pandemic and shifts in work dynamics. Small business owners need to stay attuned to these trends to not only retain talent but also enhance overall employee satisfaction.

Flexible Work Environment: A Must-Have

One of the standout revelations from the SurveyMonkey study is the increasing demand for flexible work arrangements. Nearly 50% of respondents indicated that the option to work remotely is a critical factor in their job satisfaction. This trend underscores the importance of offering flexibility, particularly as many employees have grown accustomed to hybrid work models that blend remote and in-office hours.

“Flexibility in the workplace is no longer a perk; it’s an expectation,” said a spokesperson from SurveyMonkey. For small business owners, adapting to this trend may involve rethinking traditional office space allocations or investing in remote collaboration tools.

Employee Well-being Takes Center Stage

Mental health and well-being emerged as crucial areas of focus. Workers noted a desire for employers to prioritize mental health resources and create an environment where employees feel safe to discuss their challenges. More than 60% of respondents expressed that supportive workplace cultures significantly improve their job performance.

Small business owners looking to harness this trend might consider implementing employee assistance programs or regular check-ins to ensure their staff feels supported. “Invest in initiatives that promote well-being, and you’ll likely see productivity increases alongside improved morale,” the SurveyMonkey spokesperson added.

The Importance of Career Development

Another key takeaway from the study is the growing appetite for career development opportunities. Employees voiced a need for training and advancement programs. More than half indicated that access to professional development significantly influences their job satisfaction and retention.

For small businesses, this presents a dual opportunity: not only can they cultivate talent from within, but they can also enhance their reputation as desirable employers. Offering workshops, mentorship programs, or online courses can be effective strategies for fostering a culture of growth.

Navigating Potential Challenges

Despite these clear benefits, small business owners face challenges when adapting to these evolving expectations. Implementing flexible work arrangements, for instance, may require an upfront investment in technology and infrastructure. Additionally, ensuring mental health resources are both accessible and impactful can be a complex task.

Moreover, while the focus on career development is beneficial, small businesses must balance these offerings with budget constraints. Prioritizing which initiatives to implement based on available resources and employee needs will be crucial in ensuring sustainability and effectiveness.

Fostering an Inclusive Culture

Diversity and inclusion remain at the forefront of workplace discussions, with employees increasingly seeking organizations that reflect their values. The data reflects that diverse workplaces are more innovative and attract a broader talent pool. Small business owners should consider implementing inclusive hiring practices and fostering a welcoming environment to meet these expectations.

Employees want to know that their voices are heard, and that they can contribute to a workplace that values varied perspectives. Initiatives like employee surveys, feedback loops, and outreach programs can help small businesses engage effectively with their workforce.

The ongoing evolution of the workplace landscape presents both opportunities and challenges for small business owners. By integrating flexible work arrangements, prioritizing mental health, and investing in professional development, businesses can align with the shifting priorities of their employees. Those who respond proactively to these trends will not only maintain a competitive edge but also create a thriving workplace culture conducive to long-term success.

For more insights from the SurveyMonkey study, visit SurveyMonkey’s report.

Image via Envato

This article, "New SurveyMonkey Study Reveals Key Insights on U.S. Workplace Culture" was first published on Small Business Trends
Interview with Claudia Freed, President and CEO, EALgreen https://smallbiztrends.com/interview-with-claudia-freed-president-and-ceo-ealgreen/ Small Business News, Tips, Advice - Small Business Trends urn:uuid:10bcf2bc-aeae-15c0-d3ea-453efe5a299c Tue, 21 Oct 2025 13:15:45 +0300 At SuiteWorld 2025, Small Business Trends’ Leland McFarland interviews EALgreen CEO Claudia Freed about transforming surplus inventory into college scholarships and how adopting NetSuite helped the nonprofit modernize operations, manage risk, and scale its social impact.

As small business owners, we often hear about the importance of innovation and adaptability—but sometimes, the most powerful examples come from unexpected places. At SuiteWorld 2025, I had the chance to speak with Claudia Freed, President and CEO of EALgreen, a nonprofit that’s rethinking how to fund higher education through the principles of the circular economy. Her organization doesn’t just hand out scholarships; it transforms surplus inventory that might otherwise go to waste into life-changing financial aid for students.

That’s an idea any small business owner can appreciate—turning inefficiency into opportunity. Whether it’s unused products, outdated processes, or legacy systems, every organization faces the challenge of doing more with less. EALgreen’s story proves that innovation doesn’t have to be confined to tech startups or massive corporations. It can come from a mission-driven nonprofit that has sustained itself for over 40 years without outside funding.

In our conversation, Claudia shared how EALgreen evolved from a grassroots idea into a model of operational efficiency and purpose-driven leadership. She also discussed how NetSuite’s cloud ERP system helped modernize their operations, eliminate risk, and unlock new growth opportunities—all while staying true to their mission of helping students succeed. Here’s my full conversation with Claudia Freed at SuiteWorld 2025.

Leland McFarland

All right, I am here at Oracle’s NetSuite’s uh SuiteWorld 2025 with Claudia Freed, President and CEO of EALgreen. So, Claudia, thanks for coming on and uh doing this interview. So, first of all, for those who are maybe not that familiar, uh can you start by telling us what EALgreen does and who you serve?

Claudia Freed

We are a non-profit organization founded over 40 years ago and what we do is give students scholarships so that they can go to college and fulfill their own human potential. What we do that is so unique is how we do the funding of the scholarships, which is in the space of the circular economy and reverse logistics. We convert donated inventory into financial aid.

We serve a population of college students that would love to go to college but sometimes are limited with regards to their finances. We also serve corporate donors that have a supply chain challenge of product that they perhaps would have had to send to the landfill. And ultimately, uh we feel that we serve the world and society so that everyone has an opportunity to go to school.

Leland McFarland

So similar to like consignment shops that utilize um donations to uh support local uh charities but instead or you utilize um objects that may go to the landfill or even surplus to be able to uh donate to uh college students, right?

Claudia Freed

In fact, let me help you with an analogy. We think of a college as a small city. So a small city uses products for transportation, equipment, supplies to maintain their infrastructure. Therefore, we work with corporations that have that type of product to donate. And then we evaluate three different channels where we can either reuse the product on a college campus.

If the product cannot be reused because it may not be in the right place or in the right condition, we will either try to repair, or if it has to be resold, the funds that we raise fund additional scholarships. And ultimately, if it cannot be reused or repaired, it will be recycled.

The brilliant model that we inherited from our founders from 1982 is that when that snowblower, let’s say, went to a college campus, the university generates operational savings. That means that those savings are then transferred to a student to lower their financial aid costs.

The cool thing about my story is that I was the very first student that they ever helped in 1982. And I have felt the impact of the work that we do in my own life. And that is what is a large motivator for continuing that legacy.

Leland McFarland

So what inspired the founding of it? So original founders and and you you were the like the first recipient, so you can you can really attest to this.

Claudia Freed

The the the great question, you know, what inspired an engineer and a businessman that were friends um in 1982? And there was the perfect storm of ideas and opportunity. What inspired them was the thing they had in common: both gentlemen had gone to college with the financial aid help of a scholarship. So that is what they had in common.

And they were really ambitious. And they said to themselves, “Not if, but when we become successful, we want to pay it forward.” So what is the principle behind the founding of EAL? Is this concept of paying it forward and giving back. And that has been the core value of EAL that despite technology changes 40-some years in business, uh we hold very dear.

Leland McFarland

Great. Uh what challenges or pain points led you to start looking for a solution like NetSuite?

Claudia Freed

Great question. Part of being successful in business is managing risk very well, recognizing when you have an exposure, managing the risk and taking mitigating actions. A few years ago, we began to look at a potential single point of failure. We were looking at outdated technology. We had gone from pencil and paper to digital, then to um a point where if we hadn’t made the decision of updating our technology, we were going going to probably not be able to continue to grow and thrive. We also had a very fragile system of volunteers and IT personnel that were either going to be retiring or transitioning. So we recognized that as a single point of failure. Our motivation was to save the business from becoming obsolete. And that is the point at which we then began the journey to look for a partner.

Leland McFarland

Okay. Um, how were you managing operations before NetSuite? Now, you you did cover that. You you said pen and paper and so, yeah. Um, can you share how NetSuite has changed your day-to-day operations?

Claudia Freed

NetSuite has changed our day-to-day operations in ways that has made in some ways life a little bit simpler. And how? By giving us tremendous visibility into the organization, and giving us mobility, and giving us the safety of our data in the cloud to have a backup. So, specifically how it has changed: at any one point, anyone in my team has been able to develop their own KPIs and their own dashboard. So whatever their area of operation or responsibility, at a moment note—at a moment’s notice, they see data real-time. When we had five different systems, we had to be jumping from one to another. So it has changed the efficiency with which we arrive at data, empower decisions. We can now make decisions much faster. We don’t have to wait for five reports. If we have to pivot, if we have to offer a different solution, the ability for NetSuite to provide that data to us more quickly, more clearly, uh in a reporting format that can be communicated, uh that has been a tremendous boost to the operations of a small organization with 12 employees.

Leland McFarland

So drilling down a little bit, was there like a aha that like that that that moment where you just go, “Wow, this thing works and this thing is going to save us money”? Was there that defining moment?

Claudia Freed

Well, yes, and it continues, right? The moment for me, because I am responsible for finance on top of the uh mission, uh was really when we declared that we were going live. And we had to transfer data, so we had to bring data from other systems. The process took a few months, but the aha moment for us was when we recognized our own data in the new shiny model. So for us, it was the ability to trust the data the moment that it landed there. Those were our numbers, that was our P&L, those were our scholarships.

I think if we had not been successful in that transition, you cannot accelerate the change the way that we have done it. But we made a very good first step. From there, we can build out from it. The second aha moment is really coming now as we are playing and demo um AI solutions to see the way that AI is expanding our ability to analyze the scenario, the ability to think about potential risks and potential opportunities for us to create more scholarships. You mentioned about, you know, how does the business measure its success in terms of how can you be more financially successful. For us, success is measured by the number of students we can help. And NetSuite has enabled us to measure those uh lives as well.

Leland McFarland

Great. You’ve already answered some questions that were down here too. So, but um which NetSuite models or tools are you most criti— or are most critical uh to your organization’s success today?

Claudia Freed

Great question in terms of pairing your business to the right solution. We, as I have said, are a non-profit organization. NetSuite does have a module called Social Impact. Social Impact is designed for non-profit organizations that operate a more traditional fundraising model, where perhaps you are tracking grants, you are tracking ticket sales to a gala or an event. That is not the EALgreen business model. We live in the world of reverse logistics and operations. So for us, what was most attractive was the wholesale distribution model. So we use wholesale distribution to track a catalog that has about 1.5 million SKUs, through which we then fulfill orders. The second module that we use out of NetSuite is SuiteCommerce Advanced. And SuiteCommerce Advanced is, of course, the more advanced version of SuiteCommerce. And why we need that? Because our model is predicated on an object, a piece of inventory, a tool, becoming a scholarship. And when you are under an integrated system, as NetSuite is, that transaction will end up on your general ledger to feed into your financials. And SuiteCommerce Advanced allows us to do that.

Leland McFarland

That’s great. Um, you already talked about like measurable results and and and the efficiencies that you’ve already um achieved through uh NetSuite. Um, how has having real-time data through NetSuite influenced your decision-making uh um decision-making um as a uh CEO?

Claudia Freed

It enables me to communicate to my board of directors the impact of their support. So their decision to support a digital journey a few years ago, before this was even a known a known frontier, we said, “We recognize a risk. We need to make an investment. Trust us, we are going to find the right partner.” And the ability to now demonstrate success, not only to the board, but also to donors. How are we measuring success?

Over the years, we have converted over $40 million worth of donated inventory into over 30,000 scholarships. Those are real students that have gone to college. Year over year, just in the last year, because of the new tools that we have implemented in NetSuite, we have seen a 55% increase in the scholarships that are being awarded to students. The average scholarship is $3,000. We are on our way to award 1,000 scholarships this year alone. In SuiteCommerce, the platform, through an implementation of AI, which is intelligent item recommendation, our customers, who are physical plant directors of colleges and universities looking for that snowblower, a hard hat, tools to complete their work, they can log onto the system and be provided recommendations. That has increased engagement with our own partners by over 13%. And as a CEO, having data very quickly that you can follow through and investigate why is that happening, why is it 13% and not 15, or what made it go from 10 to 13, it gives you the power of analytics very quickly.

Leland McFarland

That’s great to hear. Um, as a leader, how do you balance EALgreen’s social mission with the need to stay operati— operationally efficient?

Claudia Freed

Many, many years ago, I had to come up with a metaphor for that question. Because in life and in business, it’s always about a trade-off. We’re trading off a benefit and a cost. And so for us, it’s always been the idea of flying a twin-engine plane. We need the mission to attract the support. And without the support, we really, what’s the point of a mission? So for us, they they matter in equal measure.

And one of the things that we are very proud of is that when we speak to our donors, some of whom have been with us from day one, they funded the very first scholarship and they’re still our donor without interruption. One of the words that are used to describe EAL is that we’re a thoughtful organization. And I believe that that comes from that idea that you have to always be mindful, what’s the mission of EAL? To help students go to college. And what is the business model? We are self-funded. We rely in absolutely no outside funding. We don’t have grants. That’s why we don’t use the Social Impact model, but we use the wholesale distribution. And every aspect from the board of directors on down, we know that what we do every day matters to that student that one day may be sitting here with you speaking because we do change lives.

Leland McFarland

All right, final question. Uh, if you were to describe your NetSuite experience in one sentence, what would it be?

Claudia Freed

In one sentence. Um, challenging but rewarding. Challenging and rewarding. I I wouldn’t say but. Challenging and rewarding. Rewarding because uh we are now on the other side. But better yet, let me uh share with you, just before coming here, I’m the CEO, I call Greg at one of our fulfillment centers on a Thursday afternoon at 2:30. He was understandably nervous. Why is the CEO calling me unannounced at 2:30 in the afternoon?

And I said, “Greg, I’m preparing for this event in Las Vegas. Would you describe for me a couple of good things about NetSuite and a couple of not-so-good things about NetSuite? What has been your experience?” And he was so quick to enumerate, “Well, Claudia, we now have a lot of visibility. I know where all the snowblowers are.” Great.

“Some things that are not so good.” And I heard nothing. Silence for a couple seconds. And I was like, “Greg, are you there?” And he said, “Well, I have to think about it. However, if you had asked me that question two years ago, the list would have been flipped. I would have only bad things to say. It was challenging. We didn’t have the right systems. We had the right data, but we had to put better Wi-Fi in the system, in the warehouse. Um, we had to uh acquire different type of equipment for them to do their job.” So there were some pain points. But with anything, with anything in life that is a change or an improvement, um, it’s difficult. Even if you are trying to be more fit in your own life, um, this is bringing fitness into our operations. And therefore now we are completely reliant on our data that comes from NetSuite. So for us, it has been challenging and rewarding and the proof is that we are here today as their guest, showcasing and sharing the benefit of EAL being a customer, and we believe in that.

Leland McFarland

Great. Well, thank you uh for your insight. Uh, it speaking with you has been really great. And I I love seeing what you’ve been able to do with NetSuite and and being able to accelerate your growth and and yeah, it’s it’s it’s truly amazing. Thank you.

Claudia Freed

Thank you, Leland. I I appreciate your curiosity and the questions and, you know, I could talk all day about EAL. I love what I do, but I know we have things to do. So thank you very much.

Speaking with Claudia reminded me that technology, at its best, isn’t just about automation—it’s about amplification. It amplifies impact, efficiency, and the reach of a good idea. What EALgreen has done through its partnership with NetSuite isn’t just a story about software implementation; it’s a blueprint for resilience and reinvention.

Small businesses can learn a great deal from EALgreen’s journey. Claudia’s focus on managing risk, eliminating single points of failure, and aligning mission with metrics reflects the same balancing act entrepreneurs face every day. Her metaphor of “flying a twin-engine plane”—keeping both the mission and operations in harmony—resonates deeply in an era when many small organizations struggle to grow sustainably without losing their purpose.

Even more inspiring is the measurable impact: converting $40 million in donated inventory into 30,000 scholarships, and seeing a 55% increase in awards after modernizing with NetSuite. That’s proof that efficiency and empathy aren’t opposites—they’re partners in long-term success.

For small business owners, the takeaway is clear: digital transformation isn’t just for big enterprises. With the right mindset and tools, it’s possible to scale impact, make smarter decisions, and ensure that every ounce of effort drives both profit and purpose. EALgreen’s story shows that meaningful growth starts with a clear mission—and the courage to evolve.

This article, "Interview with Claudia Freed, President and CEO, EALgreen" was first published on Small Business Trends
Why Is Training and Development Important for Workplace Success? https://smallbiztrends.com/why-is-training-and-development-important-in-the-workplace/ Small Business News, Tips, Advice - Small Business Trends urn:uuid:2f4a3c78-b75d-1770-37d0-00c7afa70d2f Tue, 21 Oct 2025 05:31:00 +0300 Discover why training and development are essential in the workplace, enhancing employee skills, boosting productivity, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Zoho is looking to change that with new, no-cost AI upgrades built directly into its Collaboration, Customer Experience, and Human Resources software.

These updates mark another step in Zoho’s broader strategy to make “agentic” AI — software that acts autonomously to complete tasks — accessible to organizations of all sizes. The company says the enhancements are designed to eliminate major barriers that have slowed AI adoption, such as high costs, fragmented tools, and a steep learning curve.

For small business owners, the updates could mean a practical edge in areas where efficiency and talent matter most — recruiting, collaboration, and customer service.

In the Human Resources category, Zoho Recruit received a wave of new features aimed at helping small teams find and hire the right talent faster. The new Candidate Matches and Job Matches tools use Zoho’s Zia AI engine to analyze resumes, job descriptions, and candidate profiles to identify ideal fits automatically. Recruiters can also use AI-Assisted Assessment Generation to instantly create custom tests — complete with questions, answers, and scoring weights — tailored to specific roles.

Additional features like the Sourcing Bot and Screening Bot further automate parts of the hiring pipeline by engaging applicants through Zoho’s Career Site or Candidate Portal, asking relevant questions, and even collecting feedback. Meanwhile, AI Assist helps recruiters write job descriptions and candidate emails, while ensuring content is optimized for search engines — a small but meaningful boost for companies trying to stand out in competitive hiring markets.

The following table provides a detailed overview of each new AI-powered feature added to Zoho Recruit, along with its description and the regions where it’s currently available.

Application

Feature

Feature Description

Availability

Available Territories

Zoho Recruit

Sourcing Bot

Automates candidate application process across both Career Site and Candidate Portal

Available

US, EU, IN, AU, CA, SA

Screening Bot

Asks candidates relevant questions based on screening evaluation criteria and instantly shows test results and collects candidate feedback

Available

US, EU, IN, AU, CA, SA

Candidate Matches

Uses AI tools to analyze resumes, job descriptions, and applications, identifying best matches

Available

All Territories

Job Matches

Evaluates candidate resume and application to suggest job openings that best fit their background

Available

All Teritories

AI Assist

Facilitates recruiters writing job descriptions, crafting email, ensure SEO friendliness and more

Available

US, EU, IN, AU, JP, CA, SA, UAE

Profile Summary

Helps overcome challenge of reviewing resumes that can be lengthy, inconsistent and overly brief

Available

US, EU, IN, AU, CA, UAE

AI-Assisted Assessment Generation

Generates complete assessments of candidates including questions, answers and scoring weights tailored to specific jobs and requirements

Available

US, EU, IN, AU, JP, CA, SA, UAE

Zia Native LLM Adoption

Zia LLM integrated into Recruit

Available

US, EU, IN, AU, JP, CA, SA, UAE

All of these tools are powered by Zoho’s native large language model (Zia LLM) and are available at no additional cost to existing users with paid plans.

For small business HR managers juggling multiple hats, these kinds of built-in automations could free up hours each week. Instead of parsing through hundreds of resumes or drafting repetitive correspondence, they can focus on interviews, culture fit, and onboarding — the human elements that truly drive retention.

Still, like any new AI system, the updates will likely require some adjustment. Companies that depend on highly personalized hiring may need to fine-tune AI recommendations to ensure they align with company culture and diversity goals. There’s also the ongoing question of data privacy, especially as AI tools analyze sensitive candidate information.

But Zoho’s approach — integrating AI directly into existing workflows rather than introducing separate tools — could help lower those adoption barriers. It also reflects a growing trend across the software industry: moving from simple “AI add-ons” to deeply embedded, task-oriented agents that work alongside users.

For small businesses that have held back on adopting AI due to cost or complexity, Zoho’s latest release presents an opportunity to test these capabilities without financial risk. As AI becomes a core part of everyday business software, early exposure to tools like Zia’s agentic features could help SMBs build confidence and capability before their larger competitors pull ahead.

This article, "Zoho Recruit Brings Agentic AI Tools to Streamline Hiring and Collaboration" was first published on Small Business Trends
Zoho Sign Gets New AI Features to Help Small Businesses Work Smarter https://smallbiztrends.com/zoho-sign-gets-new-ai-features-to-help-small-businesses-work-smarter/ Small Business News, Tips, Advice - Small Business Trends urn:uuid:1f5c9f52-763f-dfc1-1d37-d05ca1f5fbb5 Mon, 20 Oct 2025 19:10:53 +0300 Zoho has introduced new AI-powered tools in Zoho Sign and its Collaboration apps, helping small businesses automate contracts, streamline workflows, and reduce manual work—all at no additional cost.
Artificial intelligence has long promised to streamline business operations, but many small businesses have found the reality to be complicated, expensive, or out of reach. Zoho Corporation wants to change that. The company announced a broad rollout of new agentic AI tools—embedded directly into its Collaboration, Customer Experience, and Human Resources apps—to help businesses save time, reduce repetitive work, and improve decision-making. Perhaps most notably, these upgrades come at no extra cost, a move that could make advanced AI more accessible to small and midsize companies struggling to adopt it.

Zoho’s announcement centers on simplifying AI adoption through automation and deep integration with company data. By embedding AI capabilities directly into widely used apps like Zoho Sign, Zoho Desk, and Zoho People, the company aims to remove the need for complex setup or third-party tools. For small businesses that already rely on Zoho’s ecosystem, these updates could mean faster workflows and fewer manual bottlenecks.

One of the standout updates is to Zoho Sign, the company’s digital signature platform used by more than 40,000 businesses. The new Agreement Intelligence feature allows users to automatically generate contract drafts and agreements while retaining full control over customization. This could save hours of time for small businesses that handle frequent vendor, partner, or client contracts but lack dedicated legal staff.

Zoho has also added additional features to Ask Zia. The AI assistant can now analyze and summarize agreements, proofread contracts, suggest edits, and even answer questions about clauses or obligations—all without requiring external legal help. For many small businesses that need to process paperwork quickly but can’t afford legal review for every document, this type of automation could be a major cost-saver.

Other AI-driven tools in Zoho Sign include automatic field detection, key term extraction, and a non-legalese summary generator that translates complex contracts into plain English. Small business users can also flag potential risks or missing clauses, identify important milestones, and detect phishing attempts in signing links—features that enhance both efficiency and security. Each of these capabilities integrates directly with existing Zoho workflows, eliminating the friction often associated with new AI tools.

While these new features are being rolled out across multiple regions—including the U.S., India, Australia, Canada, and the EU—Zoho says all updates are available at no additional cost to paid subscribers of the respective apps. That pricing strategy could give small businesses a competitive edge at a time when many software vendors are charging premiums for AI-powered features.

The following table provides a detailed overview of all newly introduced AI features in Zoho Sign, along with their availability across different regions.

Application

Feature

Feature Description

Availability

Available Territories

Zoho Sign

Agreement Generation

Quickly generate contacts, agreements and documents using AI

Available

US

Automatic Field Detection

Docs automatically scanned for empty spaces relevant fields then inserted

Available

US, IN, AU, CA, EU

Document Summarization

Generate contextual summary of lengthy documents

Available; EU to be released in September 2025

US, IN, AU, CA, EU

Ask Zia in Sign

Prompt Zia to fetch doc data, proofread agreements, suggest edits and answer any questions associated with a contract

Available; EU to be released in September 2025

US, IN, AU, CA, EU

Key Term Extraction

Automatically extract key terms and clauses in agreements

Available; EU to be released in September 2025

US, IN, AU, CA, EU

Discover Obligations

Identify obligations that need to be duly completed

Available

US

Suggest Missing Clauses

Suggest clauses in traditional agreement formats like NDAs

Available

US

Highlight Potential Risks

Identify potential legal and financial risks in a document

Available

US

Highlight Meta Details

Summarize key metadata: parties involved, effective date, deadlines, governing law, etc.

Available

US

Key Milestones Summary

Summary of milestones and deadlines for seamless planning

Available

US

Non-Legalese Summary Generation

Plain-text summary without legal jargon for easier understanding

Available

US

Phishing Detector

Detects signing links with phishing attempts based on domain data

Available

US

The updates also reflect a broader industry trend: the push to make AI not just a separate add-on, but a native part of everyday business tools. For small businesses, that shift can mean less technical complexity and more practical impact—especially when AI is built to handle the repetitive, error-prone tasks that consume so much time.

However, as with any AI-driven automation, small business owners may need to stay vigilant about accuracy and oversight. Automatically generated contracts, while convenient, should still be reviewed carefully for compliance and clarity. And as companies rely more on AI to manage sensitive documents, maintaining data privacy and trust will remain critical.

Still, for entrepreneurs and small teams looking to do more with less, Zoho’s latest move could make advanced AI feel less like a futuristic luxury and more like a practical tool for everyday work. By embedding intelligent automation where small businesses already operate—and keeping it affordable—Zoho is helping level the playing field for the next wave of digital transformation.

This article, "Zoho Sign Gets New AI Features to Help Small Businesses Work Smarter" was first published on Small Business Trends
How To Automatically Tag Your Active Subscribers In Bento https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kc2qthSkaI Jesse Hanley urn:uuid:0467968e-b8de-94dc-6691-a9a48ea85846 Mon, 15 Jun 2020 11:53:04 +0300 Create content, products, and services that assist in the narrative of life we all tell. Most people write content but don’t do a great job of promoting it.

Here’s the thing: I figured out the perfect formula to promoting content.

Best of all, it’s not complex. Heck, it doesn’t even take 30 minutes. It’s so easy that I broke it down into 6 steps.

And just to give you an idea before we dive into the formula, it’s so effective here is the traffic to my latest blog post.

35,492 visits in a week isn’t too shabby. The post didn’t do exceptionally well and it didn’t tank. It was just an average post.

Now you probably won’t see the same results as me as I’ve been doing this for a long time, but your results will be much better than what you are currently getting. Hence, I used the number of 3,549 in the title as you should be able to drive 1/10th of what I am generating.

So, let’s dive right into the formula.

Step #1: Optimize your headline

8 out of 10 people will read your headline, but only 2 out of 10 people will click through on your headline to read the rest of your article.

No matter how well written your content is, promoting it won’t be effective if no one likes your headline.

Now I know what you are thinking… I’ve already published my article, is it too late to change my headline?

Nope, you can always change your headline, just try not to change the URL of the article once it is already published. And if you decide to change the URL, use a 301 redirect.

There’s a really simple way to come up with headlines that work. Heck, it doesn’t even take more than a minute or two.

Just head over to Ubersuggest and type in the main keyword or phrase your article is about.

You’ll see a report that looks something like this:

Now I want you to click on “Content Ideas” in the left-hand navigation.

You should now see a report that looks like this:

This report shows you all of the blog posts around the web that contain your keyword or phrase within their title. And it breaks it down by social shares, backlinks, and search traffic.

You can use this to see what is working in your space.

Ideally, you want to look for headlines that have thousands of social shares (or hundreds if you aren’t in a popular industry), at least 10 backlinks, and more than 100 estimated visits. Just like the example below.

Making your headlines similar to ones that meet those 3 criteria will increase your odds of getting more traffic.

Step #2: Add 3 internal links

The easiest way to get your new content more love is to build links.

Yes, links are hard to build, but internal links are not… plus they are still effective.

I rank for competitive terms like “digital marketing”…

A lot of it has to do with internal links. I link to my main digital marketing page within my sidebar and within my content.

Every time you publish a new blog post, I want you to go into your older content that is relevant to your newly published blog post and add a link to it. Do this to 3 of your older blog posts.

This helps with indexing and it also helps your new content rank higher on Google.

Step 3: Share your content on the social web carefully

The problem with social media marketing is that people think they can just share their content on sites like Facebook or LinkedIn and it will automatically do well.

Sadly, it won’t because billions of URLs have been shared already.

In other words, we just tend to ignore most of the links people share.

But there is a simple way to stand out and get thousands of visitors from the social web, just like I get.

So, what’s my secret?

Well, I will give you a hint. Just look at one of my most recent posts on LinkedIn:

And here is one from Facebook:

Do you notice a pattern?

I’m evoking curiosity. In other words, I am piquing your interest and if you want to know the “solution” you have to click through to my site.

With the LinkedIn post, I tell you that marketing is going to change next year. I also make a point to say how it is going to change in a way that nobody is talking about.

I do this because we all can assume marketing will change. But by saying it is in a way nobody is talking about, it evokes curiosity. And if you want to know how it will change you have no choice but to click through over to my site to read the rest.

With my Facebook post, I also evoke curiosity. I talk about a Google algorithm update, but I hint that I have an answer to leveraging Google’s latest algorithm update. And if you want to know what it is, you have to click through over to my site.

Whenever you post on the social web, evoke curiosity if you want people to head over to your site.

The easiest way to do this is that every time you share one of your articles on the social web, add a few sentences above the link that helps pique peoples’ interest.

Step #4: Message everyone you link out to

It’s common to link out to other sites within your blog posts.

Heck, sometimes I even link out to my competition.

If you don’t ever link out to other sites, you are making a big mistake. It helps with authority and trust.

If you are using stats and data within your article, you want to cite your sources. This brings credibility to you and it helps brand yourself as an expert which can help with Google’s medic update.

Now, when you link out to a site, go and search their email address. You can typically find their email address on their website.

Or if you can’t find their email address, look for a contact page on their site, you’ll typically see a form that you can fill out.

Whether you find an email address or contact form, I want you to message each and every single site you link out to with a message that goes like this:

Hi [insert their first name],

I just wanted to say, I love your content. Especially your article on [insert the name of the article you linked out to].

I linked to it from my latest blog post [insert URL of your blog post]. It would make my day if you checked it out and even shared it on your favorite social network if you enjoyed it.

Cheers,

[insert your name]

When I send out these emails, I am getting 50 to 60% of the people to respond and share my content. But of course, my blog is popular, so for me, it isn’t too hard. But it hasn’t always been that way, and I’ve been leveraging this tactic for ages.

On the flip side, I also use this tactic on a few of my blogs that are in other niches and don’t use my name (no one knows I own them) and I am seeing success rates around 20%.

Just make sure you don’t use this tactic to ask for a link back. Your success rate will be slim.

Step #5: Send an email blast

These last two tactics produce a large portion of my results, and you shouldn’t take them for granted, no matter how basic they may seem.

If you already haven’t, start collecting emails from your site. You can use free tools like Hello Bar to create popups or sliders.

Hello Bar will plug into whatever email provider you are currently using.

Once you are up and running, every time you release a new blog post, send out an email blast.

Here’s an example of one of my email blasts.

It’s so effective it generated 13,544 clicks.

I’ve found that you can drive good traffic from emails as long as you do the following:

Scrub your list – if someone doesn’t open your emails over the last 30 or 60 days, remove them from your list. It helps keep your emails in people’s inboxes.

Send text-based emails – if you look at the email I sent, I keep it simple. No images, nothing fancy, just text and a link back to my site. It’s that simple.

Evoke curiosity – just like how I explained with the social media posts, your emails won’t do well unless you evoke curiosity.

As you write more content you will get more traffic, which will cause your email list to grow. That will also cause you to get more traffic. And I know you are already prepared because you read this blog and tons of other marketing blogs, right?

But here is the thing: I also read most of the popular marketing blogs, follow all of the marketing YouTube channels, and listen to the same podcasts you do.

And I’ve noticed that very few people are talking about what’s really going to happen in 2020.

Sure, they will tell you things like voice search is going to account for over 50% of the search queries next year but all of that stuff has already been talked about.

And there are actually more interesting trends that will affect your marketing that no one is really talking about.

So, what are these trends? What’s going to happen in 2020?

Alright, here goes…

Trend #1: Companies who rely on Google Analytics will get beat by their competition

We all love Google Analytics.

Heck, I love it so much I log in at least 3 or 4 times a day. And here is the kicker: I get so much traffic that my Google Analytics only updates once a day.

I really need to break that habit but that’s for another day.

You are probably wondering, what’s wrong with Google Analytics?

There actually isn’t much wrong with it. It’s a great tool, especially considering that it’s free.

But here is the thing… marketing has been changing. New channels are being constantly introduced, such as voice search.

And transactions no longer are as simple as someone coming and buying from you and that’s it.

These days there are things like upsells, down sells, repeat purchases, and even checkout bumps. On top of that, there are so many different ways you can generate revenue for your online business, such as partnerships, affiliate marketing, and even webinars.

This has caused companies to start using analytics solutions that tie into their database better, such as Amplitude. Or better yet, you are seeing a big push into business intelligence.

A central place where you can tie in all of your data and make better-informed decisions so you can optimize for your lifetime value instead of your short-term income.

In 2020, you will see more companies adopting business intelligence solutions… from paid ones to free ones like Google Data Studio.

If you haven’t checked out Data Studio, you’ll want to start now because it is easy to pass in all of your business and marketing data into one place. For example, you can pass in more granular data from your Facebook ad campaigns into Data Studio while that would be a bit difficult to do with Google Analytics.

Trend #2: Companies will optimize for voice search, but not for revenue

According to ComScore, over 50% of the searches in 2020 will be from voice search. But that’s not really a new trend… everyone has been talking about that for years.

So, what’s the big deal?

Optimizing for voice search is a great way to get your brand out more, but how is that going to convert into sales?

I haven’t seen too many solutions so far when it comes to capitalizing on your voice search traffic, but so far there is Jetson.ai.

If you aren’t familiar with Jetson.ai, it makes it so people can buy from your site using voice search. It doesn’t matter if it is Alexa or Google Home, they work with most of the popular devices.

What’s cool about Jetson.ai is that it can learn from each customer and customize the interactions.

For example, if I keep ordering the same toothpaste from a specific store using voice search, Jetson.ai keeps track of that so you can easily keep ordering the same product over and over again with little to no friction.

Heck, it’s easier than logging into your computer or pulling out your phone to make a purchase.

Trend #3: Your lists won’t convert as well, so you’ll have to look for alternative communication channels

Email, it’s something we all use in the corporate world.

But here is something interesting when it comes to marketing emails… I’m in a group with a bit over 109 email marketers across different industries in different parts of the world.

And can you guess what we are all noticing?

Our open rates are staying roughly the same and that’s largely because we all know how to clean and optimizing for deliverability.

But our click rates are going down.

So far as a group we have seen our click rates drop by 9.4% in 2019.

That’s crazy considering as a group we have over 146 million email addresses.

Now does this mean email is dead?

Of course not!!!

Email is here to stay and will be here for a very long time.

But what companies will have to do in 2020 is to leverage more communication channels.

Chatbots will take off drastically. Not necessarily the Intercom’s or Drift’s of the world but more so the solutions like ManyChat and MobileMonkey.

ManyChat and MobileMonkey leverage Facebook Messenger and as they connect it with Instagram and WhatsApp it will get even more popular.

In addition to chatbots, you’ll see more people leveraging tools that allow push notifications like Subscribers.

It’s so powerful, here is the impact I’ve been able to generate from push notifications so far using Subscribers.

You can wait till next year to lever chatbots and push notifications, but I’d recommend you start sooner than later. How Google’s Bert Update Will Affect Content Marketing https://neilpatel.com/blog/bert-google/ The Kissmetrics Marketing Blog urn:uuid:0a668a61-7b59-df25-fdf8-84e6161cfdcf Tue, 29 Oct 2019 14:25:03 +0200
Google announced that it has been rolling out a new update call Bert. Should I even spend time learning about it?

Well, Bert will affect 1 in 10 search queries.

To give you an idea of how big of an update this is, it’s the biggest update since Google released RankBrain.

In other words, there is a really good chance that this impacts your site. And if it doesn’t, as your traffic grows, it will eventually affect your site.

But before we go into how this update affects SEOs and what you need to adjust (I will go into that later in this post), let’s first get into what this update is all about.

So, what is Bert?

Bert stands for Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers.

You are probably wondering, what the heck does that mean, right?

Google, in essence, has adjusted its algorithm to better understand natural language processing.

Just think of it this way: you could put a flight number into Google and they typically show you the flight status. Or a calculator may come up when you type in a math equation. Or if you put a stock symbol in, you’ll get a stock chart.

Or even a simpler example is: you can start typing into Google and its autocomplete feature can figure out what you are searching for before you even finishing typing it in.

But Google has already had all of that figured out before Bert. So let’s look at some examples of Bert in action.

Is Bert even useful?

Here are 4 examples of Bert.

Let’s say you search for “2019 brazil traveler to usa need visa”.

Before Bert, the top result would be how US citizens can travel to Brazil without a visa. But look at the search query carefully… it’s slight, but it is a big difference.

The search wasn’t about US people going to Brazil, it was about people from Brazil traveling to the US.

The result after the Bert update is much more relevant.

Google is now taking into account prepositions like “for” or “to” that can have a lot of meanings to the search query.

Here’s another example… “do estheticians stand a lot at work”…

Google used to previously match terms. For example, their system used to think “stand” is the same as “stand-alone”.

Now they understand that the word “stand” has the context of physical demand. In other words, is the job exhausting… do you have to be on your feet a lot?

And one more, “can you get medicine for someone pharmacy” …

As you can see from the before and after picture, it’s clear that the new result is more relevant.

Same with this one on “math practice books for adults” …

Is that the only change?

It isn’t. Google also made changes to featured snippets.

For example, if you searched for “parking on a hill with no curb”, Google used to place too much emphasis on the word “curb” and not enough emphasis on the word “no”.

That’s a big difference… and you can see that in the results.

The new changes this algorithm update brings makes it much more relevant for searchers and it creates a better experience for you and me and everyone else who uses Google.

But how does it affect SEOs?

You need to change your SEO strategy

There are three types of queries people usually make when performing a search:

Informational

Navigational

Transactional

An informational query is like someone looking to lose weight. They aren’t sure how so they may search for “how to lose weight”.

And once they perform the search, they may find a solution such as different diets. From there they may search for a solution, using a navigational query such as “Atkins diet”.

Once someone figures out the exact solution, they then may perform a transactional search query, such as “the Atkins diet cookbook”.

From what we are seeing on our end is that Bert is mainly impacting top-of-the-funnel keywords, which are informational related keywords.

Now if you want to not only maintain your rankings but gobble up some of the rankings of your competition, a simple solution is to get very specific with your content.

Typically, when you create content, which is the easiest way to rank for informational related keywords, SEOs tell you to create super long content.

Yes, you may see that a lot of longer-form content ranks well on Google, but their algorithm doesn’t focus on word count, it focuses on quality.

The context of the tweet from Danny Sullivan, who is Google’s search liaison, is that he wants SEOs to focus on creating content that is fundamentally great, unique, useful, and compelling.

So when you use tools like Ubersuggest to find new topics to go after, you need to make sure your content is super-specific.

For example, if you have a business about fitness and you blog about “how to lose weight without taking pills”, your content shouldn’t focus on diet shakes or supplements or anything too similar to diet pills. Instead, it should discuss all of the alternative methods.

I know what you are thinking, shakes and supplements may not be diet pills and they aren’t the same keyword but expect Bert to get more sophisticated in the next year in which it will better understand what people are really looking for.

Additionally, you should stop focusing on keyword density.

Yes, a lot of SEOs have moved away from this, but I still get a handful of emails each day asking me about keyword density.

Keyword density will even be less important in the future as Google better understands the context of the content you are writing.

So, where’s the opportunity?

As I mentioned, it’s related to creating highly specific content around a topic.

It’s not necessarily about creating a really long page that talks about 50 different things that’s 10,000 words long. It’s more about answering a searcher’s question as quick as possible and providing as much value compared to the competition.

Just like when you search for “what is it like to be in the Olympics”, you’ll see a list of results that look something like this:

Although the first result has the title of “What it’s like to go to the Olympics”, the article doesn’t break down what it is like to go as an attendee, it breaks down what it is like to go as an athlete. Just like a searcher would expect based on the query.

Bert was clearly able to figure this out even though the title could have gone either way. And the article itself isn’t that long. The article itself only has 311 words.

If you want to do well when it comes to ranking for informational keywords, go very specific and answer the question better than your competitors. From videos and images to audio, do whatever needs to be done to create a better experience.

Now to be clear, this doesn’t mean that long-form content doesn’t work. It’s just that every SEO already focuses on long-form content. They are going after generic head terms that can be interpreted in 100 different ways and that’s why the content may be long and thorough.

In other words, focus more on long-tail terms.

You may think that is obvious but let’s look at the data.

It all starts with Ubersuggest. If you haven’t used it yet, you can type in a keyword like “marketing” and it will show you the search volume as well as give you thousands (if not millions) of keyword variations.

In the last 30 days, 4,721,534 keyword queries were performed on Ubersuggest by 694,284 marketers. Those 4,721,534 searches returned 1,674,841,398 keyword recommendations.

And sure, SEOs could be typing in head terms to find more long-tail phrases, but when we look at what keywords people are selecting within Ubersuggest and exporting, 84% of marketers are focusing on 1 or 2-word search terms.

Only 1.7% of marketers are focusing on search terms that are 5 or words longer.

Following the strategy of creating content around very specific long-tail phrases is so effective that sites like Quora are generating 60,428,999 visitors a month just from Google alone in the United States.

And a lot of their content isn’t super detailed with 10,000-word responses. They just focus on answering very specific questions that people have.

Conclusion

Even if your search traffic drops a bit from the latest update, it’s a good thing.

I know that sounds crazy, but think of it this way… if someone searched for “how to lose weight without diet pills” and they landed on your article about how diet pills are amazing, they are just going to hit the back button and go back to Google.

In other words, it is unlikely that the traffic converted into a conversion.

Sure, you may lose some traffic from this update, but the traffic was ruining your user metrics and increasing your bounce rate.

Plus, this is your opportunity to create content that is super-specific. If you lose traffic, look at the pages that dropped, the search queries that you aren’t ranking for anymore, and go and adjust your content or create new content that answers the questions people are looking for.

If you don’t know how to do this, just log into Search Console, click on “search results”, and click on the date button.

Then click on compare and select the dates where your traffic dropped and compare it to the previous periods. Then select “Queries” and sort by the biggest difference.

You’ll have to dig for the longer-term search queries as those are the easiest to fix. And if you are unsure about what to fix, just search for the terms on Google that dropped and look at the top-ranking competitors. Compare their page with yours as it will provide some insights.

So, what do you think about the latest update?

The post How Google’s Bert Update Will Affect Content Marketing appeared first on Neil Patel.
Hi, I’m Neil Patel, Co-founder of NPDigital. For example, he had his team jump on an hour call with Gary Vaynerchuk’s social media team so they could learn from them and grow his brand faster.

So, what’s the secret to my success?

Well, before I get into it, let me first start off by saying I love Eric to death and the point of this post isn’t to pick on him or talk crap… more so, I have a point to make and you’ll see it in a bit below.

Is it the fundamentals?

Everyone talks about strategies to grow your social following… from going live and posting frequently or talking about the type of content you should post and what you shouldn’t do.

I could even tell you that you need to respond to every comment and build up a relationship with your followers, which will help you grow your following and brand.

And although all of this is true, I dare you to try the fundamentals or the strategies that every marketing guru talks about doing. If you do, I bet this will happen…

It will be a lot of work and, if you are lucky, in the next 30 days you may get 10% more followers.

Sure, some of you will get much more growth, but you’ll find that you can’t always replicate it and it won’t be consistent.

So, what is it then?

Is it luck?

Luck is part of some people’s success, but not most. The problem with luck is it doesn’t teach you much and it isn’t easy to replicate.

The reality is, some people will just get lucky and have tons of traction.

In other words, luck isn’t the secret. But if you do want to get “luckier”, then you can always become an early adopter which helps a bit.

How early is early?

When you jump onto a social network when it’s new, it’s easier to grow and become popular.

For example, I got to over 30,000 Twitter followers extremely fast when Twitter first came out.

At that time, I wasn’t as well known… it happened because of a few reasons:

Social algorithms are favorable early on – algorithms are typically favorable and most people will see your content. There aren’t many restrictions, hence it’s easier to grow. After a social network becomes popular, algorithms tighten up.

Algorithms are easier to game early on – when you are early, you can use a lot of hacks to grow faster. For example, on Twitter, I would just follow tons of people a day and unfollow anyone who didn’t follow me back.

First movers’ advantage – social networks want more users, that’s what they need to succeed. In the early stages of any platform, they want to help you gain more of a following so you will keep using their platform.

But here is the thing: even though being an early adopter helps, it’s not the secret to my success.

Just look at Instagram, I am really late to the game. But I started growing fast just this year as that is when we really started.

If you can get in early, you should do so, assuming you have the time to invest. For example, this is the time to get in on Tiktok.

When you get in early, there is always the chance that the social network may end up flopping. But if it does take off, you’ll be ahead of your competition.

So what did I do?

Here was the secret to my growth… and it still works today. Eric Siu is even doing it with me right now.

It’s piggybacking on brands that are already popular.

When I first started, no one knew who I was. And I’m not saying everyone knows who I am today… by no means do I have a large brand like Tony Robbins.

What I did early on in my career was piggyback off of other popular brands.

For example, I hit up Pete Cashmore from Mashable, Michael Arrington from TechCrunch, Adrianna Huffington from Huffington Post, and so many other popular sites like ReadWriteWeb, Business Insider, Gawker Media, and GigaOm to name just a few.

I know some of them don’t exist anymore, but back then they were extremely popular. Anyone who was in tech, and even some who weren’t, knew about each of those sites.

So, when I got started as a marketer, I hit up all of those sites and offered all of them free marketing in exchange for promoting my brand and adding “Marketing done by Neil Patel” or “Marketing done by Pronet”, which was my ad agency back then.

Just look at the image above. TechCrunch used to link to my site on every page of their site… forget rich anchor text, it really is all about branding.

The hardest part is, I had to email and message these influencers dozens of times just to convince them to let me help them for free. And a lot of them ignored me or didn’t accept my offer.

But of a few said yes.

Pete from Mashable was one of the first to say yes. Once his traffic and rankings skyrocketed, his competition hit me up. Especially TechCrunch.

What was funny, though, is that I was constantly emailing TechCrunch and didn’t hear back. 6 months from my first email, they eventually accepted my offer.

I made a deal with Michael Arrington at the time in which once I boosted his traffic, he would add a logo that I did marketing for him, which you saw above.

In addition to that, he would tell all of his venture capital friends what I did for him and share the results (so hopefully they would share it with their portfolio companies, which would help me make money) and write a blog post about me.

He didn’t end up writing the blog post, which is fine, but he did the other two.

When he sent out emails to VCs showing a Google Analytics graph of his traffic growing at a rapid pace, I quickly got inundated with inquiries about my marketing services.

In addition to that, I was building up my brand… and my social media following. I was gaining “social clout” because I was doing good work for influencers.

One could argue that boosting traffic for someone like TechCrunch by 30% is worth millions and I should have charged for my services. Although I spent countless time doing free work, I wouldn’t trade it for any single dollar as it is what made me and helped build up my reputation.

And I didn’t stop there. Even today, I try to associate myself with other popular brands. Just like how I was lucky enough to work with Robert Herjavec, who has a popular TV show in the US along with Mark Cuban…

Here’s how many visitors I was getting for my name “Neil Patel” on a monthly basis before I started working with Robert.

And this is how many visitors I get for my name on a monthly basis a few months after I worked with Robert.

That’s a 37.84% increase in a matter of months!

By piggybacking off of popular brands, it doesn’t just help my website traffic but also helps to grow my social media following as well.

Just like as you can see below with my Instagram growth…

Now it isn’t just me who can do this, anyone can.

How can you piggyback off of other brands?

Just like how I piggybacked off of brands like TechCrunch, Eric is doing something similar to me at the moment.

We have a podcast that generates over 1 million downloads a month.

Eric’s had a podcast for years, but the one he has with me has more than 10x the listeners. This has helped him grow his brand a lot over the last year.

Let’s just look at the data. According to Eric, due to the podcast, he has signed up 6 clients, which has generated 540,000 dollars in annual revenue.

Now when he goes to tech conferences, 3 to 4 people tend to come up to him and mention how they love Marketing School and his work. In addition to that, it has been easier for Eric to set up meetings (people respond back to him more now), and he is also getting advisory shares in companies due to his growing brand. And the best part is, he is getting more paid speaking gigs for up to $10,000 a pop because of the podcast.

The data shows it was a good move by Eric for partnering up with me. He pushed me to do a podcast years ago and I told him no because I was too lazy. He didn’t give up though. Eventually, he got me to say yes and flew to my house in Las Vegas to record our first episode.

He did all of the work and it has been a great mutual relationship as doing this podcast has also helped grow my brand at the same time.

Now you are probably thinking, why isn’t his follower count growing fast enough?

Well, he needs to do what he is doing with me with a few more influencers to really put fuel to the fire. Just like how I didn’t only piggyback off of TechCrunch… at one point the Gawker Media network was linking to me on every page of their sites, which was seen by over 100 million unique people per month.

That really gets your brand out there!

Another example is Brian Dean from Backlinko as he did something similar with me back in the day. Years ago I approached him to write a detailed guide on link building with him and he also created videos that were on my old marketing blog Quick Sprout, which helped him grow his brand.

I can’t take credit for “making” Eric or Brian successful. They would have done well without me… and in the grand scheme of things, I really didn’t do much for either of them.

It’s like saying TechCrunch made the Neil Patel brand. Of course, it helped, and helped a lot… but one partnership won’t make or break you.

And if I didn’t continually blog, create videos, speak at events, or do any of the other stuff that I did, the TechCrunch partnership wouldn’t have been as effective.

Eric and Brian would have grown their brand in other ways because their work stands for itself, hence they would have been successful on their own. I just helped provide a little boost, just like how TechCrunch provided me with a boost.

And once more people get to know you, you’ll naturally do better on the social web.

For example, when Will Smith created his Instagram account, he didn’t have to buy ads or anything. Everyone just knows him already and that’s why his Instagram account blew up really quickly.

And you can do what Will Smith did on a smaller scale. Similar to what I did.

But don’t expect it overnight. Will Smith has been on television for over 20 years. It’s multiple shows, movies, and connections with other famous people that have really helped grow Will’s brand.

Of course, we won’t get on TV as Will has, but you can piggyback on other popular brands multiple times to create a similar (smaller) effect.

All you have to do is help these influencers out for free.

If you are a web designer, offer design services. If you are a marketer, offer marketing services. If you are selling a product or service, keep giving it away for free and maybe someone will talk about your company.

If you don’t have anything you can offer that has value, just look at whatever influencer you want to associate with, see where they may need help, learn that skill, and offer it for free.

It’s the easiest way to become popular on the social web.

Conclusion

That’s my secret to being popular on the social web.

It’s also how I built a decent size company… purely by leveraging other popular brands in the early days.

You can do the same, but you have to be patient. Don’t expect it to happen overnight.

For example, Eric’s brand has been growing but we have been doing a podcast together for over 2 years now.

Plus, he continually pushes on his own and doesn’t just rely on leveraging other influencers.

Remember, nothing worthwhile happens overnight.

You have to be persistent with your emails, your direct messages, your text messages, and whatever else you can do to get a hold of these influencers. Most will ignore you but it is a numbers game and, eventually, you’ll be able to associate your brand with someone popular, which will grow your brand.

And last but not least: Don’t expect an influencer to make you successful. Sure, multiple influencers are better than one, but that’s not what I meant.

If Brian Dean from Backlinko wasn’t good at link building, creating content, SEO, and educating, he wouldn’t do well… no matter who he associated himself with. The same goes for Eric.

Your skills, your abilities, your product… whatever you are trying to brand needs to stand on its own.

So, what do you think about my secret? Are you going to copy it?

The post The Real Secret to My Social Media Success appeared first on Neil Patel.
