The plot feels like a mixture between Halloween 2018 and Scream. Shawnee Smith plays Moira Cole, a woman who survived her cousin's killing spree decades ago. A movie is made about this killing spree that puts her in the spotlight. Years later, the killer, Skulleton, escapes prison and attacks her home, murdering her husband and then vanishing. One year later, he returns to finish the job.

The plot is confusing, nothing is really explained, and you never really feel like you know what Skulleton's motivations are. The backstory is never properly explained. As a slasher, the kill scenes are bad, with no tension, suspense, build-ups, and the kills are lame and not very creative. The movie just ends without really explaining anything. The backstory becoming a movie doesn't really play into anything and just feels like it's there because Scream did it. First the stage is set with that brilliant opening of John Houseman telling the ghostly backstory around the campfire, which makes it clear what the threat is. Then you get the series of paranormal activity around the town, subtle, but creepy. Then the attack on the Seagrass, showing what the threat is capable of and making it clear this is just the opening act. Then the slow buildup during the daylight hours, with the steadily accumulating supernatural actions, leaving you on edge by the time darkness falls again. Add in Carpenter's moody, ominous score and those shots of the desolate lonely countryside, which shows how isolated Antonio Bay is. All that and by the time the ghosts come calling, we are totally primed and expecting the worst. That's how you do buildup in a horror movie. There are several 80s horror movies that I have only watched for the first time recently and have said to myself "damn, I haven't seen something that cool in a while!". For instance, I somehow had never seen They Live until about a year ago and it totally blew me away. Another big one that somehow eluded me until recently was Night of the Demons(1988) which I also immediately fell in love with. So it got me thinking, why were the 80s such a great decade for the genre?... Of course had a few directors/writers that were in their prime (Carpenter, Craven, Cronenberg, Raimi) but there was something special about the decade. Let me explain.

The acting: Now, the acting was far from perfect, I'm pretty sure that the actors were student actors. But they give decent performances most of the time and they were just giving it there all. And I really appreciate that part of it.

The special effects: Now I"m going to assume that the budget was low because the film was not going to make any money do to being a fan film, but nonetheless, this movie had very good special effects and very good kills. When Jason ripped a dude's rib cage out, my jaw dropped. My favorite effect was Pamela's undead body.

The location: This film looks really good for a fan film. It doesn't feel polished, it feels real and I love that. I also buy the location as Camp Crystal lake.

The story: One of the things that I like about this movie is that the main character is connected to the opening of the movie and he isn't just a random character. I loved the the reboot did it and love it here too. The movie also doesn't just have helpless characters. The characters are armed, they are mildly experienced with this stuff, and with the sting operation in part 9 being a thing that exist, it was nice to see Jason take out people who are kind of similar to that. I also liked how Jason wasn't alone here as he was helped by his undead mother who dug him up in one of my favorite scenes.

The fan service: This film had a few cool scenes but it never consumed the movie and there was way less than I thought there would be. My favorite moments were when Alice returned and of course, we got to see Jason use a chainsaw for the first time.

Now, this movie is perfect by no means, but I personally liked this more than the actual movies. That doesn't make the mainline movies bad, but I really liked this one. But if you're of the opinion that the film was too slow or basic or something like this and don't have knowledge of what happpened a Jonestown, please go read about it, and you'll see that this film scaled it right back from the true story.

   submitted by /u/Northernpixels
[link] [comments] horror /u/Northernpixels Wow, Infested on Shudder is GREAT https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/comments/1cdjotj/wow_infested_on_shudder_is_great/ All Things Horror: From Movies & TV to Books & Games urn:uuid:87e74776-397b-d01e-cf54-d0fbafef9219 Fri, 26 Apr 2024 08:06:52 -0400

Take a little of La Haine, Attack the Block, Evil Dead Rise and Arachnophobia and you've pretty much got it.

Tense, skin crawling, squirmy and brilliantly directed, very glad this guy is being given the keys to evil dead.

   submitted by /u/crumble-bee
[link] [comments] horror /u/crumble-bee Great quote, great book https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/comments/1cdivdk/great_quote_great_book/ All Things Horror: From Movies & TV to Books & Games urn:uuid:b91063dc-e9a0-f444-ba71-6d1eee1700f0 Fri, 26 Apr 2024 07:23:29 -0400

"For the small children, bedtime is come. Upon arriving the Americans meet their indigenous guide ("Kenny Rodgers"/Sheva) and briefly spend time walking through the markets and butcher shop, but notice that there's something strange going on, and soon find themselves getting pursued by never ending swarms of violent angry mobs, forcing them to run from building to building, barricading rooms etc.

The mobs in both stories start off with improvised weapons, but eventually get access to firearms and vehicles becoming more deadly with each scene. The angry mobs in both stories are lead by agitators with megaphones and are depicted as doing brutal executions, in both cases are shown on screen rounding up and killing the American hero's fellow western colleague. Eventually because the mobs killed not only all the westerners but also innocent fellow citizens, they eventually end up taking over the city, with the only friendly local remaining being the guide the American met in the beginning who helps him survive by fighting their way through multiple blocks against never ending swarms.

Other similarities I've noticed is that both have a theme related to neocolonialism, with No Escape revealing the works of Owen Wilson's character's employer, a water company that put the country's government in debt, whereas RE5 has the Tricell corporation that conducted experiments on the host country's population. With both seemingly benevolent but having dark ulterior motives. In addition No Escape is set in an unnamed fictionalized Asian country similar to how RE5 is set in Kijuju which is somewhere in a unnamed fictionalized African country, the creators of both stories kept the settings vague to avoid controversy but ended up getting accused of racism anyway by critics because of their depiction of the locals primarily as vicious redshirts for the American hero to overcome, with the hero's respective guides been perceived as "token goodies" (and westernized compared to others in their respective countries, Kenny Rodgers being an Asian man who named and modeled himself on the American singer, Sheva having a cockney accent). There is also the revelation that the man behind the crisis in both stories is a mysterious bad ass English guy with slicked back hair that wears sunglasses (though the one in No Escape is depicted far more sympathetically than Wesker).

   submitted by /u/CuteSquidward
[link] [comments] horror /u/CuteSquidward Hidden Details in Late Night with the Devil (2023) https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/comments/1cdhq0y/hidden_details_in_late_night_with_the_devil_2023/ All Things Horror: From Movies & TV to Books & Games urn:uuid:bfe03d34-5392-77b9-c4a6-74c1c1618498 Fri, 26 Apr 2024 06:15:03 -0400

I don’t analyze horror movies very often, but I did a similar post last year for Sissy, one of my favorite horror movies, and thought I’d make another one for Late Night with the Devil. I don’t feel the need to do deep dives like this very often because not very many horror movies will include a lot of hidden clues, but I noticed a lot of small details in this movie that I didn’t see other people mentioning in their reviews, so I figured I’d give it a try!

This analysis is a bit more straightforward than the one I did for Sissy, because in my opinion, Late Night with the Devil has a much more concise plot that doesn’t leave as much up to interpretation. That being said, there is a ton of attention to detail in this movie that shows a lot of commitment to overall haunted aesthetic the move was going for, which I really enjoyed.

SPOILERS AHEAD

At 7:53 mins, two newspaper clippings appear on screen in succession of each other that have a ton of interesting information if you pause to read. It doesn’t necessarily add anything you can’t put together when you watch to the end, but it confirmed some suspicions I had and drove certain narratives home.

First newspaper: The cohost Gus is being interviewed and says that crew members would joke around about how Jack must have made a deal with the Devil to attract so much success. He also mentions that Jack blamed himself and felt responsible for Madeleine’s death.

Second newspaper: Important context is given away here. This gossip-column-style article reveals that Jack has been romantically involved with parapsychologist Dr. June Ross-Mitchell, which has caused friction with his cohost Gus. It also indicates that Jack has been spending “an alarming amount of time” at The Grove.

The movie doesn’t shy away from the sexual chemistry between Jack and June, but it was fun to see the relationship confirmed in such a sneaky way. These excerpts also made me wonder if Jack and June could have been having an affair before Madeleine died, or if they met because of what Jack had been getting up to at The Grove. Which also begs the question, why was he spending so much time there before the Halloween special aired? It’s not much of a revelation that Jack felt guilt over his wife’s death and that he “made a deal with the devil,” but I think it’s interesting they made a point to emphasize he’d been spending even more time at The Grove after she died.

—

The ghost of Madeleine is constantly appearing in hidden shots throughout the movie from the moment she attempts to contact Jack through Christou! In between segments, you’ll often hear the camera crew arguing about how they’re not seeing something on their cameras that the producers and / or audience keep complaining about noticing in the video feeds. I believe this is a reference to all the ghostly appearances of Madeleine. I’m positive there are some I missed, so if you saw something I didn’t I’d love to hear it!

At 24 mins, you can see the apparition of Madeleine in a mirror while Jack is walking by.

At 47:36 mins, Madeleine’s face is visible in the mirror on the table while the surrounding objects begin to shatter.

At exactly 1:00:48, Madeleine’s face flashes briefly in the static of the TV behind the producer’s shoulder.

At 1:16:55, after they play back the tape to reveal the ghost of Madeleine was in the shot, it cuts back to Jack in the live studio audience where you can clearly see a purple arm and hand touching his shoulder just like Madeline was in the tape. This one is more obvious, but I didn’t notice it at all on my first viewing.

At exactly 1:18:01, Madeleine’s face appears for a very brief flash while the screen goes black after the demon possesses Lilly. You have to go frame by frame to catch it because it’s only there for a moment, but this is the creepiest she looks in any of the apparitions. It’s like she was getting progressively more distressed the closer Jack got to his demise.

—

Some things that aren’t necessarily hidden details but I think are clever or amusing:

At the beginning of the movie when Jack has his wife Madeline on his show two weeks before she dies, while they’re cutting to commercial she whispers “I love you Jack.” You see him whisper “I love you Minnie,” but it isn’t included in the captions, so you have to watch his lips. This confirms the nickname long before it’s officially mentioned in the movie.

The medium Christou uses a confusing and over-the-top accent that sounds like it’s intended to be a combination of a Middle Eastern / Spanish dialect, evoking this mysterious foreigner cliche you see with a lot of psychics - especially back in the day. But when he gets a genuine message from a real spirit, Jack’s wife Madeline or “Minnie,” he completely drops the fake accent. It shows how much he was genuinely shocked by this message and it wasn’t a part of his act. Jack’s refusal to acknowledge Madeline’s message could be seen as him sealing his fate, as she was probably trying to warn him of what was coming. It could even be the reason Christeau got so sick, since he was desperately pleading with the recipient of the message to accept.

—

The implied plot seems to be that Jack was being tricked and controlled by the cult of Abraxas or the demon himself before the Halloween special of Night Owls even started, and that Madeline’s ghost was trying and failing to prevent this from happening. Two keys to this theory are that June tells Jack that Lilly had been acting more strangely than usual and had been talking about him the night before the broadcast, and also in Jack’s cryptic confession to Madeleine in the hallucination at the end of the movie. He tells her that he didn’t believe it was real when he agreed to sacrifice her for fame, probably during his frequent visits to The Grove. Considering that after his wife died, his views actually began to plummet instead of skyrocket, this likely created the desperation the demon needed to influence his rash decision to allow the demon to be summoned live on air.

Abraxas is known as a demon that loves an audience, so Jack gave him exactly what he wanted. In the clip shown to the audience discussing the church of Abraxas and the leader D’Abo, they make it clear that the demon requires a human sacrifice. Jack even ends up using the same dagger that previously belonged to the cult leader as shown in the clip. All of these circumstances and his desperation put him in a situation that allowed him to be tricked into sacrificing Lilly and completing the ritual.

This makes me wonder if The Grove members were in on this plan with the cult. At the beginning of the movie they show pictures of people at The Grove, which includes a man in an owl costume and several other men in robes and owl masks. Throughout the taping, there’s an audience member who is completely silent and is wearing a skeleton costume who gets featured a lot throughout the movie. In the very end before Jack goes to meet Madeleine, we see the same men in the owl costume and robes along with the man in the skeleton costume come to greet him. This gives me the feeling that it was all being orchestrated between the two groups, and the man in the skeleton costume could have been a member of the cult or of The Grove watching to make sure the plan was carried out.

—

Overall while there are definitely things I didn’t love about the movie, like it’s pacing or use of AI (although really minimal), I thought it was a super fun watch. I would love to hear from other people what they thought, if there was anything I missed, or if you have different theories!

   submitted by /u/aya_kinoko
[link] [comments] horror /u/aya_kinoko Horror movies where the villain has a unique gimmick or ruleset? https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/comments/1cdgj7s/horror_movies_where_the_villain_has_a_unique/ All Things Horror: From Movies & TV to Books & Games urn:uuid:a71ac6b1-8db3-9690-875d-f03c3ec22336 Fri, 26 Apr 2024 04:53:58 -0400

Movies where the monster or killer has a creative gimmick.
