I don't think Halloween 5 is a bad movie. I also don't think it's as good as Halloween 4, but it's not a bad movie. I do think Rachel should of not been killed so early in the film and should of saved it later in the film and built up Tina and Rachel together. I also think that watching the movies back to back is a good way to watch this because when I watched it back to back, it felt like just one long continuous movie. I like how in this movie, they had scenes that shows Michael Myers does experience emotion making him more human. I haven't watched halloween 6 in a long time and only remember certain details of it, but the curse of thorn being introduced in this film was cool because it adds more layers to the story, but the ending did seem pretty goofy and should of went with some other ending because Michael Myers escaping with the man in the suit seems cartoonish. This movie is nowhere near as bad compared to Texas chainsaw massacre: the next generation or weaker entries of other horror movie franchises. I would rate this movie a 7/10. It gave me the same fun, horror value & satisfaction of watching a good movie even at this age when my choices have changed.

Whoever made this movie deserves some award. The gore, the fun, the dark humour; this movie was an upgrade over its predecessors. Thank you whoever made this. Time & age where horror movies tend to take themselves too seriously, this movie was the one who knew how to have fun. They didn’t waste time in bs drama or unnecessary fillers. Everything was on point, one of the few movies who got pacing perfect.

The great thing about FD movies was the anticipation factor. It tells you that there is going to be a death, it keeps teasing you & when it actually happens you still get the shock of it. I mean Bloodlines has used this tactic so brilliantly; it tells you what’s coming next on your face & still delivers it perfectly. Plus, the whole movie is repeatation of the same pattern multiple times & still makes it fun.

Plus the end with the old lady & realisation of the fact that they haven’t really evaded the death. Damn, the makers pulled the classic trick out of Sam Raimi’s books. It really brought back the memory of classic ‘Drag me to Hell’. The nostalgia of older movies, the easter eggs or references were so fun. Many movies nowadays use these nostalgia as cash grab & just cover the whole movie with it. But you makers used it so subtly & efficiently, it was all there; the nostalgia was there but you didn’t make it your center of attention. Thanks for that.

Thank you whoever made this movie. 14 years later, you got me to relieve that same fun I had with the previous movies. It’s not easy but you pulled it off. Cinematography is important!

So for starters, most people (including fans of the series) will agree that John is a psychopath. An absolute murderous lunatic whose torture traps are way disproportionate to the petty nonsense he is supposedly punishing them for. "You pulled the head off an ant 20 years ago. So now I've covered you in honey and will feed you to ants unless you chop off your hands using this rusty cleaver." At least one of the victims in each movie will have about this level of unfairness.

But the thing that bothers me about these movies is, while most fans understand this, I'm not sure the writers and directors do. In the climax of each movie, I don't get the impression that the movie knows John is in the wrong. His theme plays, the music swells, the victim screams in anguish, often times inter-cut with John or Amanda or some other apprentice saying something pseudophilisophical or pointing out all the victim's flaws, and then they say the signature line "Game over!" And the screen cuts to black.

You may not notice what these scenes are saying, but your brain does. Everything about how the ending shots are framed are saying "John Kramer is a badass."

That's why in the comment sections of these film clips, you'll see people praising how godlike his intelligence is or how the victim should have known better or are parroting one of his lines. Because our brains are wired to side with and root for badasses, even if we intellectually understand that they are in the wrong.

Darth Vader can cut his way through a hallway of rebels in the name of upholding his totalitarian regime, and we love watching him do it. Because he's cool! And our brain is enamored by and instinctually raises up people that are cool, moreso than they do people that we consciously acknowledge to be moral or right. It's not enough for people in the movie to say John is in the wrong. It will fall flat if the camera, music, and scene framing don't agree with them.

And that's what bothers me about these films. They make John so cool, so badass, and having foresight that is downright supernatural. Fans will say "you're not supposed to side with him, he's a bitter asshole who decided to make his cancer everyone else's problem, everyone knows this." But the movies don't seem to know this, because they never acknowledge it or even hint at it.

Sure, characters will call him out, but never the narrative.

Detective Eric will call him out, talking about what a lunatic he is and how he's talking without saying anything. But then he dies at the end, pathetically, and fails at everything he tries to do while sitting crying as John verbally picks him apart. This is clearly framed like John is correct.

Later Hoffman calls him out on killing people, and John just shouts "Killing is distasteful!" And the moment pauses, like he just said something profound and we need to pause to take it in.

That one drug dealer says "You're fucking crazy!" And then runs into razor-wire. We're clearly not supposed to take him seriously.

Any criticism he faces isn't ever portrayed by the cinematography as something we're supposed to take seriously. It's always undercut or downplayed, oftentimes never even acknowledged.

And you know, this is all Tobin Bell's fault! /s

I jest, he seems like a decent guy. But I think his acting chops and stage presence is a large part of why any criticism of John doesn't feel like it sticks. Anyone in the movie that points out his lunacy ends up getting pushed aside by Tobin's overwhelming aura of stoic coolness. And the movies are just never willing to let him lose! He's hardly ever even inconvenienced. John is never allowed to hesitate, doubt himself, or just make a mistake. The closest would be him messing up the dosage on that one guy in Jigsaw, but that's pretty quickly pushed past and never dwelled on again.

He's always confident and unflappable. And our brain is attracted to confident people. Even if they're confidently wrong, enough confidence and flattering cinematography will make a guy saying 2 + 2 = 5 look like the coolest guy in the room. And Tobin has such a compelling, even-tempered voice that I could listen to him give a 2nd-grade lesson on the water cycle, and I'd be hanging on his every word.

John Kramer looks and sounds cool, the writers like making him cooler, and the fans love celebrating how cool he is. So he can never lose. Can never misplay something, can never have an engineering failure, and can never be taken off-guard. Even when dying he has to smile and have it be part of a grander plan. And most importantly, we never see him experience a moral defeat. A moment when he has to face someone that proves him wrong in both action and word, and doesn't have any rebuttal.

Until John Kramer is allowed to look wrong, the movies kind of passively endorse him no matter what he's doing. And since they made him an outright antihero in the latest one, I think it's safe to say the movies have completely lost their own plot.

   submitted by /u/ClassroomSolid719
[link] [comments] horror /u/ClassroomSolid719 What’s your favorite Zombie movie? https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/comments/1oa5apm/whats_your_favorite_zombie_movie/ All Things Horror: From Movies & TV to Books & Games urn:uuid:73263adb-df95-a9a9-ba17-ab927c18aea9 Sat, 18 Oct 2025 15:44:14 -0400

Hubby and I are watching Resident Evil (one of my personal favorites) on day 18 of spooky season. The supporting actors all understand the assignment and lean into the camp, Jared Padalecki is good as the one "real" person to ground the ridiculousness, and the pacing is tight and avoids the usual slasher slog.

I'm a sucker for the late 2000s aesthetic and dated humor, which is very clearly self-aware (especially the dude weed LMAO characters).

Derek Mears' portrayal of Jason is also great; he's a more athletic, intelligent, and purposeful Jason (which I can see as a downside but I think it works), though he does lack Kane Hodder's more manic violent mannerisms.

I will say the movie sputters and loses steam once the sister character is revealed to be alive as it shifts tonally into a more serious movie, but I still enjoyed the latter half.

I understand that horror movies will always have an uphill climb with the critics, but it seems like they just didn't know what they were watching or understand the genre. It’s like a weirdly edited drive in hillbilly hellscape that just keeps descending into more madness as you watch it. And I gotta say, I really had fun watching it again, and I think I like it even more now.

I do remember a lot of The Devils Rejects (the sequel) and they don’t even feel like they are in the same universe. Two completely different styles and vibes. I always thought the sequel was the superior film but after rewatching the first one I think I liked it more just because of how wacky and I don’t want to say “experimental” but I guess I’ll say “artsy” to describe it. It’s honestly a pretty hard film to describe unless you’ve personally seen it. Like instead of just skipping to a new scene, Zombie films the characters in this vintage VHS inverted style describing something or just kind of going on a tangent, and this editing is used pretty much throughout the whole film. Intercut with old hammer horror black and white scenes and commercials. It was just very interesting and fun I thought. Never really seen a movie like it honestly. It’s nothing how I remember it as a kid. (Definitely shouldn’t have been watching it at 7 years old)

Don’t get me wrong, I can completely see why people would hate it or think it’s stupid, because it kind of is stupid. But it’s a very fun stupid, and quite disturbing stupid as well. It does kinda jump all over the place and get a little messy and slightly confusing to follow but the way the film just exists I don’t think it could really be NOT messy. I think it screams cult classic though, and it’s definitely a must watch on Halloween every year for me now.

Oh, and the last like 30 minutes were by far my favorite part. It really just lets the chaos out full throttle, it just goes all the way with it and I respect that. One of my horror film icks is films that don’t seem to really take concepts or ideas or stories and push them as far as they can go, just go nuts with it. Let loose basically. This film definitely doesn’t have that issue lol.

What did you think of it? Our fear of the monster is the fear of losing our youth and vitality. But instead we treat aging (especially in women) as a monstrous condition, and that comes out in the horror movies with monsters that look like old women with sagging breasts and butts, wrinkled skin, atrophied muscles, and age spots on their complexions.

The Substance didn't do that to me. The body horror is absolutely exquisite, but at no point is Demi Moore the monster. She is monstrous, but you recognize the true monster in the greed and hunger for immortality almost immediately, and as the movie goes on you also realize that Elizabeth Sparkle would do the same thing to Sue if the tables were turned and she was the Other Self. They are both inherently selfish, but just as Sue's beauty and physical perfection is amplified, so is her selfishness and willingness to harm herself.

This movie was absolute perfection, and gave the truth to the monster. Demi Moore was incredible - absolutely one of her best ever roles, with so much vulnerability and fear. Margaret Qualley also shone, and her role as the version of Elizabeth that wants to destroy the parts of herself that she hates, fears, and resents was incredible.

I knew it would take me a long time to watch this movie, because while I love body horror, it is the hardest kind of horror for me to watch. For me, it is the scariest movie I have ever seen. And I have watched a lot of horror movies. Hereditary, Smile & Smile 2, Where Evil Lurks, Terrified, the Terrifier Trilogy, the entire franchises of Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Scream, Paranormal Activity, Blair Witch etc.

The Dark and The Wicked was so terrifying for me for these reasons:

It's about a completely innocent family dealing with a traumatic and depressing situation.

A lot of the injuries and deaths are based on things I think people worry about happening to them. I could see it coming but didn't think they would go that far

The fact that they are literally talking to the demon and driving it around without realising it's the demon taking on the form of a priest

The eerie telephone calls made to the house, "you know, you sound just like my daughter. She's dead."

Even the jump scares and subdued special effects are horrifying. There's something about a person with glazed over, zombie like eyes with their head spinning rapidly from side to side that just scares the shit out of me

The isolated location of the farm. Being alone in the dark and opening the door to a priest with demonic eyes asking you if you need some rope, knowing your mother just hung herself.

The fact that the demon is unstoppable. No way out of the situation or any hope of a solution is ever provided. There is no hope at all for the whole movie. It is just relentlessly depressing. Even the parts that could be comedic in a certain context are not comedic in the context in which they are presented. They are just terrifying.

The fact that the main character's decision to stay with her Dad and protect him leads to her being killed by him after he becomes fully possessed. But surely enough ire has been wasted on this conflict by now? Say we show the world that there is a great invisible strength in a people's union? Say we've shown that a people can endure awful sacrifice and yet cohere? At all rates, whatever must be proven by blood and sacrifice must have been proved by now. Shall we stop this bleeding?

Monsterland magazine reported that “Critters” shot in just six weeks for about $3 million, with Valencia standing in for the heartland. Herek would later go onto “Bill & Ted” fame and “Holy Man” shame, but this was his first time behind the camera.

Here, some evil alien puppets from a distant galaxy hijack a spaceship and crashland in outer Dog River or whatever town we’re in. The titular Critters are complete assholes and roll around like Sonic the Hedgehog, shoot poison spines like Sonic the Hedgehog, and will eat anyone/thing that stays still too long, like Sonic the Hedgehog.

…I’ll be honest I’m taking a stab in the dark when it comes to most of my Sonic lore here, but I am very up on my “Critters” lore.

The little monsters terrorize a farmhouse in a kind of Hopkinsville Goblins setup, although to my knowledge the Hopkinsville Goblins did not eat Billy Zane, here making only his second credited film appearance. Dee Wallace gets to tote a shotgun around for much of the second act, which is oddly gratifying.

There are also a couple of alien bounty hunters who arrive to cover the whole thing up, one played by incredibly accomplished Broadway great Terrence Mann of all people. They seem to be pretty bad at their jobs, but so is everyone in this movie as far as I can tell, so I’m sure they’re doing their best.

Despite the pavement-level budget and my even lower expectations, “Critters” turns out to be a GREAT movie. It’s not “Chinatown” or nothing, but, ah, well, given all the baggage that movie has, maybe that’s for the best.

There are lots of hilarious little touches, like the boring educational film about Earth culture that the bounty hunters don’t bother to watch and which actually begins with the phrase “Earth is a planet of contrasts”--I CACKLED.

Another one that’s easy to miss is when the cantankerous dad checks out Billy Zane’s new hot rod and comments, “You’re not going to be hauling much hay in it,” prompting Zane to just blankly say “...yeah.”

Admittedly, “Critters” feels a bit by-the-numbers once the action gets into high gear, and I’m not sure it ever really feels like the family is in sufficient danger. Still, this is a lot of fun, and the little asshole puppet monsters look great.

“Critter” was a big hit relative to its slender budget. Roger Ebert argued that the movie was ripping off both “Gremlins” and “The Terminator” but adds “that doesn’t make it a bad film” and credited “Critters” as a funny and lively outing; Siskel, always a sucker for B-movies, got a kick out of the bounty hunter schtick and called it perfect for teenagers.

I’m amazed to see this movie produced four sequels and a TV show as recently as 2019. But tomorrow we’ll be looking at maybe the least successful smalltown alien invasion flick ever mounted instead.

Original Trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRGyKnW3zW4

   submitted by /u/SSF415
[link] [comments] horror /u/SSF415 ‘Weapons’ Sets HBO Max Release Date Ahead of Halloween https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/comments/1o9tupx/weapons_sets_hbo_max_release_date_ahead_of/ All Things Horror: From Movies & TV to Books & Games urn:uuid:2aee3731-5cb6-7569-0f3e-0bbb24de9468 Sat, 18 Oct 2025 07:58:40 -0400 submitted by /u/Whobitmyname
[link] [comments] horror /u/Whobitmyname Mandy Is A Masterpiece https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/comments/1o9tfda/mandy_is_a_masterpiece/ All Things Horror: From Movies & TV to Books & Games urn:uuid:e0f6ae56-7ac1-91c4-ac24-7331826dfb35 Sat, 18 Oct 2025 07:35:14 -0400

I’m watching this again, In The Shadow Mountains. David Cronenberg doesn't.

I do a lot of late night walking (I'm nocturnal). The other day I peeked into a little library in front of a house on a cute little side street by me (In Toronto) and saw a couple books by Sutter Cane (the fictional author from John Carpenter's 1994 film, In the Mouth of Madness staring Sam Neil).

I'm a huge John Carpenter fan, so I grabbed them and brought them home. As a flipped through the pages, I realized they all have the exact same text printed on them over and over.

After further examination, I came to the conclusion that they're actual screen used props from the film. I put on my jewelers glasses and closely examined the cover printing to see the old-school half-tone dots, looked at the paper stock and saw fine brown fibers of old wood pulp, gave it a good sniff to confirm the dank basement smell of a 30 year old book, and cross referenced them against the movie and copies sold at auction. John Carpenter recently sold off 50 of them he pulled out of storage. One per customer at $250 USD.

These are not from that lot.

I got to thinking about how many film people are in my neighborhood. I knew for sure that David Cronenberg was near by, as I had been to his house to demo a VR experience I made back in 2014.

Related article: https://www.roadtovr.com/vr-demo-david-cronenberg-project-spawned/

I dug through my old emails to find the address, as I didn't remember exactly where it was.

Turns out, it's the house directly across the street from said little library where the books were found. Wild!

Right beside the email with the address was an email from his son Brandon (also a director), thanking me for demoing VR to them, and asking me for a little help getting the DK2 we gave them running on his Mac.

So, I emailed Brandon this story, because of the insane co-incidence, and checked to make sure someone didn't throw them in the library by mistake.

A few days later, I ran into David Cronenberg on the street. No joke. I was riding my motorcycle and stopped beside him as he was walking down the street.

"David Cronenberg?" I said. He turned and said "Yes".

I told him the whole story, and he said the books weren't his, but it was indeed a wild story. I also mentioned that we had met, years ago and I was the guy who showed him and Brandon VR. I said "Ah yes", but I'm not sure he remembered me.. I was wearing a motorcycle helmet...

He admitted that he didn't know the people who lived in the house across from him, and that they may be movie people as well, and got them from the movie set. He also said "I like your vehicle", which was nice. haha.

That night, I got an email back from Brandon. He said also agreed that it was a wild story, and said they definitely weren't his dad's books. "Good find though!".

Well, That brings us up to date. Just wanted to share and document this, because sometimes, things in my life happen that I can hardly believe myself.

As another strange coincidence, I'm currently running a Kickstarter for a horror game (literally called 'The Horror'). Not related to Cronenberg, but definitely has some references to his and John Carpenter's work. Plus a rare downer ending that isn't the death of a major character, it's just a slow burn realization that this cult flows through the entire community they're in.10.

   submitted by /u/Foreign_Sun6004
[link] [comments] horror /u/Foreign_Sun6004 Dracula Untold (2014) https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/comments/1o9ltc8/dracula_untold_2014/ All Things Horror: From Movies & TV to Books & Games urn:uuid:41ab2a3c-44de-fec6-f138-0d1904d9e6b7 Fri, 17 Oct 2025 23:53:03 -0400

Wow, what a beautiful historical horror flick, blending both the mythos of vampires and Dracula with the real life of Vlad the Impaler his inspiration is inspired in its own right. I love period pieces and vampires are some of my favorite monsters so this scratches a specific niche itch for me that just makes warm and fuzzy with excitement.

   submitted by /u/Foreign_Sun6004
[link] [comments] horror /u/Foreign_Sun6004 Hereditary https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/comments/1o9l9hc/hereditary/ All Things Horror: From Movies & TV to Books & Games urn:uuid:35319292-e71d-bac2-a705-0c89da9cefce Fri, 17 Oct 2025 23:23:10 -0400

Can we talk about how scary hereditary was? The score and atmosphere was so impressive! I have nothing to do with the movie I just wanted to share how much I enjoyed that….much more satisfying movie than Halloween ends I started to forget I was watching a fan film. 8.5/10 horror /u/Visible_Star_7783
