Im talking about the truly scared of what’s going to happen next, it brings me back to when I first started watching horror. the scene where the autistic son comes in the house and talks to grandma really got me! how the camera focuses on the lights and shadows in the house, it really makes you think evil is lurking somewhere.

I think I really love the 7 rules formula, it adds to the scary level because you keep praying that the characters don’t break them (they unfortunately do)

having watched mostly American and Asian made horror movies this one feels new and interesting to me. could anyone suggest me horror where it’s in a rural setting like this? an example being The Medium (the Korean Thai one) and I realize I do tend to find movies set in rural villages scarier. And I wouldn't blame them.

But I didn't think about those films after they ended as far as emotional impact goes. I am able to compartmentalize them and appreciate them for what they are - philosophical, effects exhibits, cultural footnote/urban legend, and endurance test (not the biggest fan of ISOYG - just thought it was edgy w/o the female empowerment substance it thought it had) respectfully.

But Testament? It made me so thoroughly uncomfortable. So much so, I still think about how terrifying it would be nearly a decade after watching it. Granted, I saw it at the beginning of my horror fascination so I wasn't as desensitized, but the thought of people turning on each other, stealing what little somebody else has as everyone starves. And the scenes of her kids dying? Dear Lord. I'm not even a parent, but seeing someone so innocent die slowly and painfully in your arms and you not being able to do anything about it!

I suppose it just feels so close to being REAL and inescapable, even more now than back when I watched it. I feel like I KNOW even the "kindest" people would become greedy and homicidal towards even the most vulnerable people. Actually, specifically TOWARDS the most vulnerable people - all social norms and the protections they bring, broken down and ignored. Shoot, it happens now in other places and other ways, but on a nationwide scale?

All in all, I avoid these kind of movies if I know the tone is intentionally trying to be sad and hopeless. Something like Fallout or Mad Max is totally fine. But sad? Disturbs me too much. I'm not sure what separates this from, say, Martrys for me, perhaps the scalecurly. I think it might be the greed and selfishness of several of the survivors. I've heard Threads (1984) is similar, and I avoid it duely.

Would love your thoughts, interpretations of my unclear reasoning, or perhaps subgenres that you avoid because they disturb you?

   submitted by /u/BeforeISleep-
[link] [comments] horror /u/BeforeISleep- Thinking of watching either Bring Her Back or The Ugly Stepsister tonight, what do you think? https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/comments/1m06uvb/thinking_of_watching_either_bring_her_back_or_the/ All Things Horror: From Movies & TV to Books & Games urn:uuid:123a92c5-17d2-9672-90d4-b95eca509012 Mon, 14 Jul 2025 23:08:30 -0400

I've seen Talk to me and thought it was an enjoyable experience overall. The sense of dread, knowing something or someone could be around every turn but somehow never see anyone, endless expanse of landscapes or architecture. Something so simple can be so enjoyable to watch personally, and vivarium did a phenomenal job at that, infinite housing development with a uneasy feeling behind it, unexpected changes in the tone of the movie just from one encounter, constant dread over if this is the end or if there’s a chance of escape. All in all I feel vivarium did very well, it should provide some sort of inspiration to those who want to make similar movies or backroom esque movies specially in a horror setting cause I know there’s a few other movies that are similar but they aren’t horror which really can captivate and really pull on that existential dread of a never ending no escape place with multiple layers beyond what you see on the surface. I hope to see more of these types of movies in the future or even an expansion on vivarium story maybe expand to a different location or a different setting, never ending mall with people that leave just as soon as you see them and when you go there they’re gone sort of thing. That genre of movie can have so much potential like an untapped opportunity waiting for a creative mind to hit it and make a lot of money. If I knew how to make movies or even know how to suggest them I would, this is the best I can think of doing though lol, I just want to see if there’s others who view this the same or have any movies they’d like to recommend similar to it.

   submitted by /u/Gbubby03
[link] [comments] horror /u/Gbubby03 A recommendation for "The Summer Hikaru Died" https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/comments/1m00duh/a_recommendation_for_the_summer_hikaru_died/ All Things Horror: From Movies & TV to Books & Games urn:uuid:f6cb76e1-daeb-10a9-e2cc-0ac1363d3e0e Mon, 14 Jul 2025 18:17:20 -0400

Hey folks! As an avid fan of both horror and anime, I rarely find a release that manages to do both well. "The Summer Hikaru Died" (a.k.a. Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu) is the latest of this rare combination, and is currently streaming on Netflix.

The story follows a teenage boy, Yoshiki, whose closest friend, Hikaru, has been replaced with an otherworldly entity. As he struggles with how to feel about this upsetting circumstance, his small mountain village is rife with mysterious goings on, and a "company" is set on doing something about them.

The show is currently slated for 12 episodes, but the source material is ongoing, so I suspect a future second season will depend on the success of this one. But knowing Netflix's track-record with cancelling good shows, nothing is certain.

Regardless, it's thus far a well-directed Japanese folk horror that deftly blends the animation medium with modern arthouse horror sensibilities.
