France implores the thought of incredible desserts, from its decadent chocolate mousse and buttery croissants to the heartwarming romance that floats through the country. However, this is not the only thing the country has, as its magnificent landmarks go above and beyond anything else.

Europe draws millions of visitors worldwide each year, thanks to its delicious cuisine, high fashion, vibrant culture, and many famous landmarks to visit.

Undoubtedly, the country’s heart is Paris, home to world-class architecture, museums, and nightlife. However, outside the capital, you’ll find an array of small towns, castles, famous landmarks and other incredible attractions that duly belong on your bucket list, too.

Walk through the French streets and feel awed by the spectacular architecture. From the artificial structures of Mont Saint-Micheals to lateral marvels such as Pont du Gard and Mont Blanc, let’s visit some of France‘s most incredible landmarks.

1. The Eiffel Tower

Kicking off the top French landmarks list is undeniably the most iconic structure in France and the by far, the most photographed, the Eiffel Tower. Standing in sheer wonder, the incredible edifice nestled in Champ de Mars’s centre is the tallest structure in Paris. It stands 324 meters (1,063 ft) tall.

Built between 1887 and 1889 by French engineer Gustave Eiffel, the Eiffel Tower is made of iron rather than steel. It was built to be one of the main attractions at the Paris World’s Fair in 1889.

Parisians quickly fell in love with The Eiffel Tower and more than 2 million visited in the first year that it was open. The tower symbolised French know-how and industrial genius.

Today nearly seven million people visit The Eiffel Tower every year. The top of the Eiffel Tower which can be visited is at 276 metres. The other key viewpoint is on what is called the second floor which is at 116 metres.

I highly suggest you take an Eiffel Tower summit tour and climb to the very top; there, you’ll be welcomed with panoramic views of the capital. Though the tower is impressive at any time, it becomes magical at night as its lights twinkle and oozes with romance.

Ticket prices vary depending on how high you want to go and how you want to get there – stairs or lift. It is possible to take a lift all the way to the top (with the option to stop at the second floor) or to walk up to the second floor and then get a lift to the top.

July and August are the busiest times of year to visit The Eiffel Tower but it is usually quite busy all year round. It is possible to book tickets two months in advance of your visit. I would highly recommend booking a skip the queue ticket for the Eiffel Tower ahead of your visit to Paris.

2. Le Louvre

When you’re in Paris, you’ll certainly not want to miss attending the most visited museum in the world: The Louvre Museum. It first opened in 1793 with an exhibition of 537 paintings, and today, it houses around 38,000 historic objects.

This iconic structure is the world’s largest art museum and is famously known for housing Mona Lisa. The original of this famous painting hangs in the Louvre today and has been since 1804.

Apart from Leonardo Da Vinci’s jaw-dropping painting, you’ll find plenty of other interesting antiques in this mega museum and symbol of Paris.

From Oriental, Egyptian, Roman & Etruscan antiques to the Greek antique section. Aside from antiques and famous paintings, the museum also houses impressive sculptures like the ‘Venus de Milo’.

IM Pei’s iconic glass pyramid was completed in 1989, adding another element to this Parisian landmark.

The Louvre Museum receives over 15,000 visitors per day, so I highly suggest booking a skip the line tour to get your spot in this iconic space. Tickets purchased online ahead of time are slightly more expensive than those purchased at the museum. However, you will be given a timed entry ticket and will not have to queue which I think is worth the extra.

In 2019, the Louvre was the most visited museum in the world receiving over 9.6 million guests.

3. Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris

The Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris was initially erected in the 14th-century to honour the Virgin Mary. The French Gothic cathedral is located in the heart of Paris on Île de la Cité island in the middle of Seine and is considered one of the most famous and beautiful in the world.

Notre Dame’s full name is Notre Dame de Paris. This means Our Lady of Paris.

With its grand facade and equally awe-inspiring interior, Notre Dame was certainly built to impress. From its noble church bells, marvellous sculptures, bell tower, stained glass windows to one of the world’s largest music organs.

Notre Dame was damaged during the French Revolution in the 1790s. But it was Victor Hugo’s novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame that really drove interest in the cathedral.

In April 2019, Notre Dame caught fire whilst it was being restored. Serious damage was done, but restoration plans began quickly. The aim is for Notre Dame to be restored to all of its glory for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to visit the inside of Notre Dame Cathedral during this restoration work. However, it is, of course, possible to come and see this stunning building.

4. Arc de Triomphe

The Arc de Triomphe sits at the western end of the Champs-Elysee in Place Charles de Gaulle and the middle of one of the scariest roundabouts in the world.

This famous European landmark is a tribute to those who died fighting for France in the Napoleonic and Revolutionary Wars. The names of all French victories and the generals are inscribed on the arc. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War 1 lies underneath the Arc de Triomphe.

The Arc de Triomphe was commissioned in 1806 by Napoleon. However, it was not completed until 1836. By this time, Napoleon had been banished to Elba. He was never able to see the Arc de Triomphe but his remains passed through it on the way to Les Invalides.

Every year the Bastille Day parade on July 14 starts at this triumphal Arch and the Tour de France also finishes here.

1. Casa Batlló

Casa Batlló is a big and beautiful building in the heart of Barcelona. Designed in 1904 by famed Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, it’s considered one of his most famous works of art.

The unique layout of the building is truly mesmerising. It showcases Modern architecture, Expressionist architecture, and Modernisme.

It features unusual tracery, mismatched oval and rectangle windows, protruding balconies, and colorful ceramic tiles. The arched roof has a scaly appearance and has been compared to that of a dragon or a dinosaur. It’s one of the most bizarre and wonderful landmarks of Spain.

The interior is just as fascinating. It’s worth booking a tour to explore the full package.

2. Basílica La Sagrada Familia

La Sagrada Familia is probably one of the first Spanish landmarks you think of when you picture the country. This famous church in Barcelona is truly one of a kind. Designed by the imaginative architect Antonio Gaudi, his signature creative style is on full display.

The construction for the church started in 1882 and still isn’t finished. It’s an ongoing process that isn’t expected to be completed until 2026. The building blends religious elements with natural symbols in an artistic way that will leave you completely mesmerised.

One of the most famous landmarks in Barcelona, Sagrada Familia receives approximately 4.5 million visitors every year. The number of tickets for sale as well as the entry times is limited. This is definitely a European landmark you want to book a skip the line ticket ahead of your visit.

Tickets can be purchased up to 2 months in advance and are available in 15 minute slots. Once you have entered Sagrada Familia, you may stay for as long as you like. Entrance to the towers costs extra.

3. Park Güell

Park Güell is a fascinatingly fun park system in Barcelona. It’s another beautiful landmark designed by renowned architect Antoni Gaudí. Like his other signature works, it comprises eclectic architectural elements that effortlessly inspire creativity.

It was built from 1900 to 1914, however not until 1926 was it opened to the public. Some of the unique areas of interest include a serpentine bench, curved and covered footpaths, colourful tiled mosaics, and a dragon stairway.

4. Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor

Tibidabo Cathedral

The Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor translates to the Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This striking Roman Catholic church and minor basilica sits on the summit of Mount Tibidabo in Barcelona.

It was built by a father-son duo. Spanish architect Enric Sagnier started the construction in 1902, and his son, Josep Maria Sagnier Vidal finished it in 1961.

The Neo-Gothic cathedral features handsome stonework, vibrant stained-glass windows, and a large bronze statue of Jesus at the very top. There is also a viewing platform where you can admire panoramic views of Barcelona.

Europe has an extraordinary range of diverse landscapes in its 44 countries. I appreciate that I have chosen nearly half as being the most beautiful countries in Europe but how on earth do you narrow it down any further? Even this was a struggle.

Europe has natural beauty, culture, long histories and an amazing amount of diversity given how physically close many of these countries are to each other. I have listed a few of the most beautiful places in each country to help you fill out some travel bucket list ideas.

Here are the 20 Most Beautiful Countries in Europe in the opinion of this travel blogger. And just so you know I have personally been to every single country on this list!

1. Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is home to beautiful old European cities, national parks, fairy tale castles and much more. Here are some of the highlights:

Cesky Krumlov – this southern Bohemian town is a UNESCO world heritage site. Filled with Renaissance architecture, this beautiful town is wrapped around a bend in the Vltava River and has a beautiful 13th-century castle as well.
Karlovy Vary Region – Czech Republic’s second smallest region is home to its world-famous hot and cold springs and ridiculously picturesque Czech spa towns Karlovy Vary, Marianske Lazne, and Frantiskovy Lazne. And don’t miss the insanely cute Loket and its castle.
Kutna Hora – another UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once a silver mining town. Located just 50 miles east of Prague, the town is a mix of architectural treats – don’t miss the gothic cathedral of St Barbara.
Hruboskalsko – an amazing rock formation with hundreds of sandstone towers that have gradually eroded over time. Some of the rock towers are as high as 55 meters. If you’re not into rock climbing head to Hlavatice Lookout Rock for all the views.
Prague – without question one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Prague’s Old Town is incredibly charming with its Astronomical Clock and beautiful buildings. Just outside the old town is Charles Bridge, Wenceslas Square and of course Prague Castle, the world’s largest ancient castle.

2. Italy

It would be much easier to list the places in Italy that aren’t beautiful rather than trying to come up with a relatively short list. Personally, I think that Italy is the most beautiful country in the world – the views are of course helped along by the outstanding food, wine and coffee. These are just a sample of some of the highlights:

The Amalfi Coast – some of the world’s windiest, skinniest roads perched on cliffsides twist between postcard beautiful towns like Positano and Sorrento and many more
Sicily – this stunning island has Mt Etna, the jaw-dropping Stromboli islands, the views that are Taormina, the endlessly charming Syracuse and Noto plus cannoli and more in Sicily.
Puglia – doesn’t get the high PR coverage of some of the other areas of Italy but Puglia is where Italians go on their vacations. Beautiful beaches, Trulli villages, sunsets to die for, and far fewer tourists.
Tuscany – it is world-famous because it is so spectacular. From delightful Sienna to the old-style “skyscrapers” of San Gimignano to my personal favourite Montepulciano (a hilltop town where every second building is a wine bar) there is just all wonderful things Italian everywhere.
Rome – has enough amazing fountains, bridges and monuments to make ten countries tourist destinations. Almost every step reveals a new stunning sculpture or church or landmark. And then there is the food. And the shopping.

Rich history, so much stunning coastline, picturesque towns, cobblestone streets in old towns, famous landmarks, natural wonders – Spain has so much on offer. And you can enjoy tapas and Cava whilst you take it all in!

Barcelona – a stunning city by the beach with phenomenal Gaudi architecture, Las Ramblas, Tibidabo, and funiculars and jaw-dropping beauty around every corner.
Seville – this atmospheric city in the south of Spain buzzes with the spirit of its renowned flamenco dancing and music. Plus don’t miss the tiles (trust me) at Plaza de Espana and its oh so stylish bullfighting ring Plaza de toros de la Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla.
The Alhambra – constructed in 889 by the Moors and then renovated by Christian kings in the 16th century, this extraordinary castle, which of course sits on a hill, has so much to explore plus outstanding views of the beautiful city of Grenada and beyond.
Canary Islands – in the United Kingdom the Canary Islands are often seen as fly and flop tourist holidays. They have got that so wrong. These beautiful islands are closer to Africa than Europe and have amazing volcanoes and other natural highlights plus outstanding beaches, sand dunes, cactus gardens and so much more. I’ve written quite a bit about Gran Canaria and Lanzarote.
Santiago de Compostela – my personal favourite city in Spain. This is the end of the Camino de Santiago and home to possibly the most stunning Cathedral that I have seen in my travels and it is a true Spanish landmark. The town is so charming – and then there are the amazing delights of the Galicia region – don’t miss the pulpo.

The Most Exciting Boats at the 2025 Monaco Yacht Show

From September 24 - 27, the Monaco Yacht Show 2025 is in action – and as usual, the world’s most respected and respectable folk are heading to Monte Carlo for the occasion.

Among the world’s biggest yacht shows, the annual Monaco event consistently draws the biggest, the boldest and, undisputedly, the best yachts, with owners routinely basing a vessel’s schedule around the show dates. After all, to be presented at the Monaco Yacht Show is to be in front of the most important eyes.

This year is no exception, and the line up is already one to be reckoned with. Ahead of this year’s show, we share the most exciting yachts set to take up residence in Monaco’s Port Hercule Harbor.

Breakthrough

Currently down as the largest vessel officially attending the 2025 Monaco Yacht Show at 389.7 ft, Breakthrough is, by all accounts, a headline act. Previously known as Project 821, Feadship’s latest offering was formally revealed in July this year, making the upcoming show one of the first chances to see her in the flesh. Powered by a combination of hydrogen and a revolutionary fuel-cell system, the aptly-named Breakthrough marks a new realm of possibility for hybrid propulsion systems. On board, she has a cinema, library, basketball course, 26.9-ft pool and even a hospital.

Another of Feadship’s newest yachts, Valor launched this May as the Dutch shipbuilder’s latest explorer offering. The steel-hulled ship features a 6.5-ft ice belt and is equipped to withstand Arctic conditions. Despite the rugged exteriors, there’s no compromise on comfort inside: Valor has all the classic superyacht modcons, including a sky lounge, several dining areas, a beach club, two Jacuzzis and an owner’s suite with an additional private Jacuzzi. And, coming in at 260.8 ft, she’s one of the biggest vessels exhibiting at this year’s show.

Luna

Shark-like Luna (not to be confused with the 2010 Lloyd Werft explorer yacht of the same name) will be making her second Monaco Yacht Show appearance since her 2018 launch. Imagined by Luiz De Basto and brought to life by Oceanco, the award-winning vessel spans 295 ft and has been heralded for her sleek, dramatic exterior, as well as her bright, light interiors. Off the back of a 2024 refit, Luna is now on the market for €218m (approx. $256m).

Katana

Following the launch of a dedicated sailing section back in 2021, Monaco Yacht Show’s wind-powered contingent continues to thrive. Among the most exciting showing this year is Kantana, a 201.4-ft vessel by Italian builder, Perini Navi. Launched earlier this year, Katana’s exhibition marks the rebirth as Perini Navi as part of The Italian Sea Group. Interiors are by design extraordinaire Rémi Tessier; his understated take on ‘luxury’ is evident throughout.

Another stand-out sailing yacht, at 203.4 ft Simena is the largest new wind-powered vessel to debut at the 2025 Monaco Yacht show. Her hybrid propulsion allows for top speeds of 14.5 knots, and she has transatlantic capability – even without using her sails. According to designer Taka Yacht Design and yachtbuilder Ares, Simena has been imagined in a nod to a “gentler era of sailing,” with a bow that emulates a classic clipper. She’s elegant but equipped for a modern yachting market, too.

Following the passing of the trailblazing Giorgio Armani last week, the presence of The Italian Sea Group’s recently launched Project 596 at Monaco Yacht show becomes all the more poignant. Part of a longstanding collaboration between the two Italian design forces, the interiors and exteriors of Project 596 were mapped out by Armani himself, translating his enduring taste into a floating piece of art.

The reason for this is that it is the heart of the city with loads of restaurants, bars, shops and entertainment options all in easy walking distance. Personally, I like being able to walk to dinner from my hotel after a long day and staying downtown is the easiest way to achieve this goal.

The lobby/reception area feels like a cool co-working space. It’s a great area to hang out and there are games if you’re in the mood.

There are four types of standard rooms and three suites. All have king size beds, italian linens, Oregon coffee and tea, coffee maker, complimentary wifi and work stations. The design aesthetic is Scandanavian smattered with some bright local art.

It has a fantastic location just a short walk from downtown but it feels more like you’re staying in a forest due to its location.

Built in 1892, the house was restored as a historic boutique hotel. There are 21 rooms in total across two properties. The main house has 13 rooms, and the nearby Carriage House has 8 suites (this is where I stayed when I visited).

Operating Hours & Best Time to Visit

The center is open from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. To fully enjoy all the activities without feeling rushed, it’s best to arrive early in the morning. This also helps you beat the midday heat and the crowds. The best time to visit is during the dry season from March to August when the weather is warm and the river is at its most beautiful.

Pricing & Packages

There are three main ticket options available at the gate, which are designed to fit different budgets and adventure levels:

Full Access (Ziplining & Mudbathing): This is the most popular option and includes everything. It covers the entrance fee, the zipline, the mud bath, kayaking, all water sports, and safety equipment. This is essentially free interior lighting that has zero emissions and won’t add to utility costs.

Another way that you can maximise natural lighting around your home is to try to maintain an open concept. By creating more of an open floor plan, perhaps by removing non-supporting interior walls, natural lighting in the space can illuminate multiple areas at once. LUNA Omakase Pairs with Japan’s Oldest Winery

This September, it has announced a partnership with Château Mercian, Japan’s oldest vineyard, for an exclusive limited-run wine-pairing menu.

Set on the ninth floor of 100 Liverpool Street, with just 12 seats and skyline views stretching to St Paul’s Cathedral, Luna specializes in sosaku-style Edomae omakase, an inventive take on tradition led by executive chef Leonard Tanyag. For this collaboration, Thesleff Group’s head of wines and sakes, Michele Orbolato, has hand-selected four bottles from Château Mercian’s portfolio – including the Koshu Gris de Gris and Mariko Syrah – to complement a 12-course menu that moves from delicate nigiri to indulgent wagyu.

“Each bottle reflects the precision and artistry that complements Chef Tanyag’s omakase – subtlety, elegance, and a profound respect for terroir,” says Orbolato.

Japan has been cultivating grapes since at least the eighth century, but the country's modern winemaking production only truly began in the late 19th century, when pioneers such as Château Mercian, founded in 1870, sent two of its earliest employees to France to study European techniques. Today, its vineyards stretch across Yamanashi, Nagano and Fukushima, producing award-winning Koshu, Chardonnay, Syrah and more, while also experimenting with newer varietals such as Albariño and Mencía. With production remaining relatively small-scale, many of the most exciting releases rarely leave Japan — making this London pairing menu all the more intriguing.

Diners will be guided through four wines, starting with the Iwade Koshu Ortum – a limited release of just 1,100 bottles, pale yellow with notes of grapefruit, Japanese citrus and jasmine. Next will be the Rivalis Left Bank Chardonnay, bright and balanced, paired with king crab nigiri and sea bream with yuzu salt. The third wine, Koshu Gris de Gris, reddish-orange with apricot and pear notes, will be served alongside yellowtail tartare on grilled sushi rice or seared scallop with truffle. Rounding out the selection, a glass of Mariko Syrah, deep and structured with pepper and dark fruit, to enhance chef Tanyag's classic wagyu A5 sando or seared wagyu nigiri.

Panerai’s Latest Release Pays Tribute to Its Classified Beginnings

Founded in 1860 by Giovanni Panerai as a combination of workshop, watchmaking school and shop, the company only began producing watches for the public once it was acquired by the Vendome group (now Richemont) in 1993. On September 10 1993, at a dramatic ceremony held on board the Italian naval destroyer Luigi Durand de la Penne, in La Spezia harbor, home to Italy’s naval special forces, Panerai officially emerged from military secrecy as a consumer watchmaker. Its endorsement by Sylvester Stallone in 1995 and subsequent international launch in 1997 saw it become one of the most popular brands of the early 21st century, emblematic of the fashion for oversized designs.

A new exhibition, opening today in Florence, marks the 32nd anniversary of the brand’s debut onto the public stage by paying tribute to its preceding decades of military watch production. For most of the 20th century, the timepieces and diving instruments (which included depth gauges and wrist-worn compasses) that Panerai produced were classified under Italy’s Military Secrets Act; it had supplied the Italian and German navies during WW2 as well as the Egyptian navy and others from the 1950s onwards.

The brand’s famous Radiomir and Luminor designs both began life as military-only creations; its work in luminosity and waterproof case construction was highly advanced for its time. The exhibition, titled ‘Depths of Time,’ features historical instruments, patent documents, early catalogues and correspondence between the Panerai family and the Italian navy. It will be on display for two months in the brand’s flagship boutique in Florence, before embarking on a world tour that will take in US and Chinese cities.

To mark the opening of the exhibition, Panerai has also announced details of a new limited edition Marina Militare model, designed to faithfully recreate one of its very earliest references from 1993 – a watch that was originally only offered to naval personnel. A tribute to ref. 5218-202/A, the watch combines a black coated steel case (executed in diamond-like carbon rather than the original’s PVD coating) and black dial with hour markers and hands in colours that echo the precise shades of patina developed by those early models.

The 44mm watch, which bears the reference PAM05218, runs on Panerai’s hand-wound calibre P.6000, with a three-day power reserve. It has the same 300-m (approx. 984-ft) water resistance as the brand’s other Marina Militare pieces, and rather than the ‘sandwich’ style dial construction for which Panerai is well known, has a single-layer dial with engraved, luminova-filled numerals – which have been subtly altered to perfectly match the design of the 1993 original.

Its solid caseback is engraved with the brand’s ‘OP’ logo as well as a numbered designation: the brand says the watch is not a strictly limited edition but will instead only be available in boutiques “by request.”

Here’s a rundown of the perfect 2 day Anchorage itinerary that will have you experiencing the best of Anchorage as well as some of the best wildlife and nature experiences near Alaska’s biggest city.

2 Day Anchorage Itinerary: Day 1

On the first day of your Anchorage itinerary, you’ll immerse yourself in the city and get a feel for the landscape.

Breakfast at Snow City Cafe

Snow City Cafe is an Anchorage institution and the perfect place to kick off any Anchorage itinerary all year round. It is a light, bright cafe with a buzzy atmosphere.

When I visited, I ordered the biscuits with sausage patties, gravy and hashbrowns, which was absolutely fantastic. Their fresh orange juice was also excellent.

Walk the Tony Knowles Trail to Earthquake Park

Tackle the 17 km Tony Knowles Coastal Trail for a truly breathtaking experience. Access the trail from Elderberry Park and get ready to see some genuinely majestic sights.

Stop and admire the views at Rock and Bronze Girl before passing the massive Orca Sculpture. You’ll then pass some more sculptural wanders at Eagle Wind Vein before heading to the famous bird-watching spot Audubon Wayside.

The trail finishes up at Earthquake Park. A devastating natural disaster hit this hilly landscape in 1964. After the entire neighborhood slid into the ocean, the municipality left the area to be reclaimed by nature.

Today, the aptly named Earthquake Park is home to an interpretive side trail with informative signs about why the ground failed and its environmental impact. But don’t get me wrong, walking through Earthquake Park is not all doom and gloom.

This 134-acre park surrounded by woods has great places to relax and enjoy a picnic with lovely views. Speaking of scenery, Earthquake Park lies along the popular Knik Arm, giving you dramatic views of the Cook Inlet and Anchorage on the horizon.

Walking can take over five hours so why not look at taking a three-hour Tony Knowles Biking Tour instead? That way you can kick back and enjoy the view and let the guide lead the way.

Have a Reindeer Dog for Lunch

If you can still fit food in after breakfast at Snow City Cafe, head to the International House of Hot Dogs (a van, not a house) and try a reindeer dog. I found my reindeer dog very tasty. The texture is chewier than a standard hut dog but not quite at the cured meat level. I added onions, mustard and ketchup to mine, making for a great light meal.

Take the Anchorage Trolley Tour

If you don’t have much time in Anchorage, taking the trolley tour around the city is the best way to see its top attractions and landmarks.

This one-hour tour takes you to highlights like Lake Hood, and the Alaska Railroad. While your guide shares the unique history of Anchorage, you’ll also get a chance to spot wildlife, like moose, along the way.

On my recent first trip to Traverse City, I was completely taken by how warm and welcoming the city felt. I stayed at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, where I indulged in an incredible facial at their spa.

That night, I had one of the most memorable dinners: right on the tarmac at Cherry Capital Airport, surrounded by planes and runway lights, while sampling creative local dishes. Over the course of my stay, I tasted so many of the region’s specialties—from cherry-inspired desserts to fresh farm-to-table plates—paired with fantastic wines from nearby Old Mission and Leelanau Peninsula vineyards. The experience was equal parts relaxing, indulgent, and inspiring, and it left me eager to plan my next visit.

The hotel’s location also offers convenient access to natural attractions, including coastal viewpoints, cliffside walks, and scenic trails, making it a practical base for both urban exploration and day trips into the surrounding landscapes. This combination of city access and proximity to nature makes Hotel Brandan a well-situated option for travelers seeking a balanced stay in the Faroe Islands.

Hotel Brandan’s modern design combines minimalism with elements of traditional Nordic architecture. The exterior includes a large glass facade that allows natural light and provide views of the surrounding urban scenery, while the green roof reflects the hotel’s focus on sustainability. The restaurant is named after the historic farmhouse, Húsagarður, which once stood in the field where the hotel is now located. The menu focuses on contemporary Nordic cuisine, emphasizing locally sourced and seasonal ingredients from the Faroe Islands. It features a mix of traditional Faroese dishes and modern interpretations, complemented by a selection of regional and international beverages. Each morning, the restaurant also offers a breakfast buffet for hotel guests. With a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, Húsagarður provides both hotel guests and visitors from Tórshavn with an accessible dining experience that highlights the flavors and culture of the Faroe Islands.

Hotel Brandan and Hotel Hafnia are both owned by the Faroese company Smyril Line. Smyril Line, primarily known for its ferry services in the North Atlantic, ventured into the hotel industry by acquiring Hotel Hafnia in 2018. Subsequently, in July 2020, they opened Hotel Brandan, a modern 4-star hotel and conference center in Tórshavn. Both hotels share a commitment to sustainability and have been awarded the Green Key certification, an international eco-label granted to businesses that exceed standards in environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism industry. While they are part of the same ownership group, each hotel maintains its unique identity and offers distinct experiences to guests (a boutique experience at Hotel Hafnia and a modern experience at Hotel Brandan).

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

Hotel Brandan is not located in the town center, so guests need to walk about 15 minutes to reach the main shopping and dining areas. The return walk is uphill, which may be a consideration for those with mobility concerns or after a long day exploring. Also, the property is situated along a busy street in Tórshavn, which can result in some traffic noise for rooms facing the road. While the location provides easy access to attractions and a quieter setting than the town center, light sleepers may notice the street activity during peak hours.

Húsagarður, the on-site restaurant, is a very good dining option, offering contemporary Nordic cuisine with locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. It provides convenient and enjoyable meals for hotel guests and visitors alike. That said, it does not (yet) compete with the very best fine-dining restaurants in Tórshavn (such as PAZ) or internationally. With some additional refinement, expanded creativity, and perhaps the pursuit of Michelin recognition, Húsagarður could elevate itself into a true gourmet destination, further enhancing the hotel’s appeal.

While the wellness facilities are thoughtfully designed and conveniently located one floor below the lobby, the spa, hot tubs, saunas, and gym are relatively modest in scale compared to full-service resort-style offerings. There is no swimming pool, and the hotel does not offer full spa treatments, which may be a consideration for guests seeking more extensive wellness amenities. The existing facilities still provide options for relaxation and exercise, but those looking for a comprehensive spa experience will need to seek alternatives outside the hotel.

Hotel Brandan is a modern 4-star property, offering quality design, amenities, and service. While it provides a comfortable and well-appointed stay, it has a somewhat corporate feel typical of a business hotel, with several functional meeting spaces and conference facilities. Travelers seeking true luxury or boutique indulgence will find it less opulent than most of the world-class hotels featured previously on this blog, but note that it is a 4-star property rather than a 5-star hotel. Overall, IMHO, it balances practicality and comfort, making it suitable for both business and leisure stays.

The best time to visit the Faroe Islands is generally late May through early September, when the weather is mild, with average temperatures around 10–15°C (50–59°F), and the days are long, especially in June when daylight can last nearly 24 hours. This period is ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking, boat tours, and wildlife spotting, including puffins and whales. Shoulder seasons in May and September offer fewer crowds and slightly lower prices, though the weather can be more unpredictable. Winter, from October to April, is less favorable due to short daylight hours, frequent storms, and limited access to some remote areas, but it can appeal to those seeking dramatic landscapes and the chance to see the Northern Lights.

HOW TO GET THERE

Hotel Brandan is located at Oknarvegur 2 in the Gundadalur district of Tórshavn, about a 15-minute uphill walk from the town center. Visitors arriving from Vágar Airport (FAE) can reach the hotel by car in roughly 40–45 minutes, or by bus via Route 300 in about 50 minutes. Helicopter services also operate between the airport and Tórshavn Bodanes Heliport, taking around 12 minutes. Once in Tórshavn, the hotel is easily accessible on foot, though the return walk from the town center is uphill.

I Followed the Monticello Wine Trail in Charlottesville Virginia – Here’s What I Learned

Did you know that Virginia has one of the most exciting and innovative wine scenes in the world today? I didn’t either until I visited lovely Charlottesville and its Monticello Wine Trail.

The first vines were brought to Virginia by Thomas Jefferson at the end of the 18th century. He had correctly identified the terroir of Charlottesville as being ideal for vineyards. Alas, he had not assessed the best grapes for the soil and climate of Charlottesville, and his attempts to start the Virginia wine industry failed.

For the next couple of hundred years, there was no wine industry in Charlottesville. An opportunity was created in the 1970s when state laws began to change, and there was new potential for wineries. In 1979 there were six wineries in Virginia. The number grew slowly to 50 in 2000; today there are more than 350. More than 40 of those are the wineries in Charlottesville VA, that comprise the Monticello Wine Trail.

Of course, there is more to Charlottesville than just wine. I will take you through 15 fantastic Charlottesville wineries (in no particular order) and then cover some other kinds of non-wine things to do. Plus I will cover where I ate, where I stayed etc etc.

Before I get to the wineries, I want to run through the key grapes grown in Charlottesville.

Jefferson Vineyards

Charlottesville Grapes

Viognier is the major white grape grown in Charlottesville. Chardonnay also grows in the region as well as the less well-known Petit Manseng grape. Chardonnay tends to be grown more often in Northern Virginia as Charlottesville can be a bit warm.

Petit Manseng is a grape that lasts until quite late in the season and makes delicious dry white wines. Personally, I am a Chardonnay drinker and I loved the Petit Manseng wines I tried while on the Monticello Wine Trail. Viognier and Petit Manseng are the primary white grapes in Charlottesville.

Loving Cup Winery

Like Bordeaux, Charlottesville is all about blending its reds. The main red grape is Cabernet France and there is also some Cabernet Sauvignon. Petit Verdot is also grown. This grape is traditionally used for blends in Bordeaux, but in Virginia, it features as a single varietal. It produces a dark purple, full-bodied wine with bold tannins that age well. Petit Verdot is Virginia’s equivalent of the California Cabernet.

Finally, Virginia has a unique indigenous red grape known as the Norton, which can be quite polarising. It’s a deep purple grape with flavors of dark fruits and a rich, fruity aroma.

Virginia Wine Competitions

Virginia takes its wine competitions very seriously. All of the wineries that I visited were proud to mention the positions they had achieved in the competitions held throughout the state. The biggest wine competition in Virginia is the Governor’s Cup. This state wine competition is held every year, and the wineries of Monticello tend to take home more than half of the gold medals each year.

The Governor’s Cup produces what is known as the Governor’s Case. These 12 wines are then declared to be the best in the state of Virginia. It is a major honor to be included in the Governor’s Case.

The local version of the Governor’s Cup is the Monticello Cup. Entry criteria include being a member of the Monticello Wine Trail and the wine must contain at least 85% fruit from the Monticello AVA.

15 Fantastic Wineries in Charlottesville VA

1. Michael Shaps

Michael Shaps is one of the best-known names in the Virginia wine industry. Shaps studied winemaking in France and arrived in Virginia in 1995 when the industry consisted of 45 wineries. He began his career at Jefferson Vineyards and then started his own vineyards as well as a consulting business in 2007.

Shaps also started his own vineyard in Mersault, Burgundy in 2004. Today Maison Shaps is run by his oldest daughter.

It was Shaps who championed the Petit Manseng grape in Virginia. This high-acid white grape was originally used for sweet wines. However, in 2012 Michael began making a dry wine from Petit Manseng and aged it in French Oak barrels. Today, Petit Manseng and Viognier are his two most popular sellers.

Michael’s Petit Manseng was one of the first wines I tried in Charlottesville, and I absolutely loved it. I bought a bottle to take home. I drank it with a friend nearly two months later, and it tasted even better than I remembered.

Michael is quite experimental when it comes to sparkling wines. His Blanc de Franc uses cabernet franc grapes rather than pinot noir, and he also has a sparkling made with Riesling. Both are made using the traditional method.

Don’t leave without trying Michael’s dessert wines. Michael uses old tobacco curing barns to dehydrate grapes he uses to make dessert wine. He makes a petit manseng dessert wine (Raisin d’etre) as well as a cabernet franc version.

The Michael Shaps Winery is about 10 miles outside of Charlottesville. However, Michael has also set up a tasting room/wine bar called Michael Shaps Wineworks Extended in Charlottesville. Wineworks Extended features the same wines you would taste at the main winery as well as some extra listings.

Michael also owns a vineyard in France and it is possible to try those wines as well as some of his personal favourites. Try a flight of Michael’s French Wines or Virginia Wines for just USD$10 each or enjoy the wine on tap.

Michael Shaps Wineworks Extended is open between 1pm and 7pm for wine and snacks. The main winery is open daily from 11am to 5pm.

2. Jefferson Vineyards

This family owned and run winery is perhaps the best known winery in Charottesville – the name and history of course help! (more of that to come). But don’t let the well known name put you off – Jefferson Vineyards was one of my favourite wineries in Charlottesville VA and I came home with a few bottles.

The Best Time to Visit The Big Island

Tourism season dips between September and November as families are leaving from summer vacations, so this is great time to enjoy reasonable hotel prices and lots of sunshine.

Surfers will likely catch the best waves from December to March, but it’s also pricey time to visit in late winter as many people come to escape harsh winter conditions in other areas of the country. Visiting during April or May can lead to cheaper hotel prices as well, but temperatures won’t be as warm as in the fall.

Flights to Hawaii

You can expect to spend a large portion of your trip’s budget on your flight to Hawaii, so try to save money here any way you can. Travel on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday for the lowest airfare prices; depending on where you fly out from, just being flexible on the day you fly out will save you on average between $100-$300.

It might be easier to just click the “round-trip” button when searching for flights, but booking flights separately can pay off in a really big way. Booking a domestic flight from your nearest city to the west coast (think Los Angeles or San Diego) through a budget airline like Southwest, and then booking your flight from there to the Big Island can save you $100+ total per person.

If you want to explore both sides of the island, consider booking one-way flights, arriving in Kona and departing from Hilo — or vice versa.

Lastly, book as early as possible. This is not one of those vacations you’ll want to “wait and see” if you’ll find any last-minute deals, because you almost never will. I would recommend booking at least 5 months in advance, but plan your trip even sooner if you can.

Climate in Hawaii

Consistently temperate weather on the island with temperatures in the 70’s and 80’s make Hawaii a warm, tropical paradise all year long. Daily showers are common in any month or time of year, however there are usually more storms and rainfall in winter months between October and March. With this in mind, pack light layers!

Where to Stay on The Big Island, Hawaii

A short 30 minute drive north of the Kona Airport is Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel — just a two-minute walk from the widely popular Hapuna Beach. All rooms boast amazing ocean views, and the hotel itself has every vacation amenity you could need.

Families or groups might consider renting a condo for more space and cheaper prices, like the beach-side condo resort Royal Sea Cliff Kona that has a central location and rates as low as $115/night in the off season.

On the eastern side of the island, the Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel and intimate Hale Kai Hawaii Bed & Breakfast are great options near Hilo.

Transportation in Hawaii

Without a doubt, rent a car. A drive around the entire island (without stops) can be done in as little as 6-7 hours, so splurge a little on a 4 wheel drive and spend a few days exploring! There are too many must-see spots scattered around — both along the coast and hidden in lush reserves — to stay in one spot the entire duration of your stay.

Hawaiian Airlines does offer flights from one side of the island to the other, and taxis are available in urban areas near hotels and airports, but both are pricey; I would recommend against both. Renting a car is the best bang for your buck, given the freedom it allows you and the time it saves.

Top Things to Do on the Big Island, Hawaii

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

With one of the world’s most active volcanoes, this beautiful national park might be one of the most unique parks in the country! Lava flow straight from the volcano into the sea at Kamokuna is a sight not to be missed, and take a drive around the Crater Rim for a spectacular view.

I’d also recommend making one of your stops the Thurston Lava Tube — an awesome lava tube discovered over 100 years ago with lush forest surroundings and interesting formations created by rushing red lava.

Waipiʻo Valley

The Waipi’o Valley is a stunning valley on the northern coast of the island, and is most easily experienced with a guide rather than navigated alone (private property makes accidental trespassing all too easy!). Take in the towering Hi’ilawe Falls — Hawaii’s tallest waterfall! — from afar at the Hi’ilawe Falls Lookout, or hike through the valley floor to reach the foot of the falls and experience it firsthand.

Fair Wind Snorkel Cruise

A half-day morning cruise with snorkeling, BBQ, and water slides is the perfect way to spend a day on the water in Kona! Should you choose a shorter trip in the evening, you can even have an up-close-and-personal experience with the gentle manta rays known to inhabit an area just five minutes from the coast. We love that this activity is great for couples, friends, and families alike!

Rainbow Falls

Just west of Hilo lies the 80-foot Waianuene waterfall, nicknamed Rainbow Falls for its abundant rainbows. This postcard-worthy beauty is easily accessible (for viewing) in the Wailuku River State Park, but if you’re set on swimming you can do so at the nearby PeePee Falls and adjoining boiling pots at your own risk. This is a great place to see a spectacular waterfall without having to venture too far off the beaten path.

Hawaii Packing Essentials

Comfortable Sandals

Comfortable sandals that will stay secure on your feet are essential; at some point during your stay, you’re almost guaranteed to come across beaches or rough terrain that will require adequate footwear.

Sun Hat

A floppy sun hat (or at least a standard ball cap) should be easy to pack and will keep you protected from the sun’s UV rays — even when it’s cloudy or overcast! You’re just as likely to get a sunburn when clouds are out or when rain showers sweep through.

Safe Sunscreen

Oxybenzone — a common ingredient in many sunscreens — can bleach and even kill coral, so be considerate of the environment and double check that you pack a sunscreen that doesn’t contain ingredients that harm the natural habitat!

Long-Sleeved Rash Guard

Water temperatures are usually warm given the climate, but a little extra sun protection from a long-sleeved rash guard is always advised. I’d also recommend packing at least two swimsuits, so you’re never stuck re-wearing a wet suit and always have a dry one available!

Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska and the state’s cultural hub. Here, you’ll find plenty of things to see and do. From learning about Native Alaskan traditions to trekking scenic hiking trails, spotting wildlife, and seeing the stunning Northern Lights, Anchorage has it all.

The Northern Lights are closely associated with places like Finland, Norway, Iceland, and closer to home, some cities in Canada. But there are several areas with dark skies in the U.S. where you can see aurora borealis, and Anchorage is arguably one of the best places. Indeed, when I visited in February, I was lucky enough to see the Northern Lights.

I will take you through the best places to see Northern Lights in Anchorage. However, before we get into that, I want to pass on my learnings about HOW to see the Northern Lights in Anchorage.

Things to Book in Anchorage Before You Leave Home
Few things are more frustrating on vacation than missing out on that amazing hotel or tour because it is sold out. Here are my top things to book in Anchorage before your vacation.

How to See the Northern Lights in Anchorage

There are four ways to see the Northern Lights in Anchorage. Let’s go through each of them and the probability of seeing the lights for each method.

1. Ask Your Hotel for a Wake-Up Call

Doesn’t this sound appealing? Curl up asleep and get a call when the lights appear and you can pop outside, take a pic and go back to bed. Alas, it doesn’t normally work this way. Firstly, if you are staying in downtown Anchorage the northern lights don’t appear often. Secondly, if they do appear they will most likely be faint. Third, the lights may have disappeared by the time you wake up and head outside.

I have tried this option at hotels in Iceland, Sweden and Alaska and it has never worked for me. Having said that, I always sign up for this option just in case!

2. Hire a Car

Just so you know, it is doubtful that you’ll be walking around downtown Anchorage at night and the northern lights will pop up. If you walk to any of the spots listed below and wait for the Northern Lights, you may be there for a long time.

It is possible to rent a car, use the Aurora forecast websites, try to get around yourself, or ask locals where to go. You may luck out and see some lights or some very pale green in the sky. Or you may end up just driving around a lot in the dark.

When I visited, a local was kind enough to take us out in his car and we still didn’t see the northern lights.

The best website I found for predicting the Northern Lights in and around Anchorage was the University of Alaska Aurora Forecast.

3. Hire an Uber

It is possible to hire an Uber and have them drive you around to find the lights. However, although the same problems apply as hiring a car as you will need to tell the Uber driver where to go.

My Northern Lights Tour in Anchorage kicked off at 8pm when the tour company picked me up at my hotel. The mini-bus was only half full, a general practice as it makes the bus much more comfortable for everyone.

When I got the call to confirm that the tour was going ahead, I was warned that it would most likely be a late night as we would need to drive outside of Anchorage to see the lights. I returned to my hotel at 3:30am. I brought a pillow from the hotel with me and had quite a good nap on returning to Anchorage. There were loads of snacks on board and when we made a bathroom stop, it was possible to buy alcohol.

I Lived in Medellín for a Month — Here’s My Ultimate Guide to the City

I absolutely fell in love with Medellin. This amazing city of 2 1/2 million has the big city energy and drive of a London or a New York. The Paisas are passionate full-on people and I adored them and their beautiful city of eternal spring.

When it comes to things to do in Medellin Colombia the list is long. I spent a month in the city and I feel like I left with quite a few more places to visit in Medellin.

Medellin is not so much about major Eiffel Tower-type sites – the best places in Medellin are much more about experiences, exploring neighborhoods, eating fruit, and generally embracing the paisa life!

18 Fantastic Things to do in Medellin

1. Museo de Antioquia

I am not much of a museum person – it normally has to be quite quirky to get me in the door. But I really fell for the modern art of Fernando Botero from the moment I saw my first sculpture so I felt I needed to go and I am so glad that I did.

Museo de Antioquia Medellin contains a mix of sculptures and paintings by Botero – although it is heavier on the painting side.

This includes one of his most famous paintings of the death of Pablo Escobar. Museo de Antioquia Medellin also exhibits the work of other local Medellin artists.

Museo de Antioquia is in a lovely building with a great gift shop (see shopping further below) and it also has a nice little restaurant. This Medellin museum is located on Plaza Botero and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Medellin Colombia.

2. Plazoleta de las Esculturas (Plaza Botero)

Plaza Botero was one of my favorite things to see in Medellin. Fernando Botero donated all of these sculptures to his home city of Medellin – on the condition that no payment was required to see them.

Plaza Botero Medellin was quite derelict prior to the gift and now it is a delightful plaza in the heart of the city and one of the major Medellin Colombia tourist attractions.

There are 23 bronze sculptures in total in the Plaza Botero and they are all very photogenic – and attract many photographers.

The square has many benches for a break, vendors galore selling hats, and rather load fruit vendors. This Medellin attraction has a lovely busy main square atmosphere and feel to it.

There is a very interesting building in Plazoleta de las Esculturas – well it is actually the main building. This Medellin building is a rather interesting mix of styles.

The story behind this unique building is that there were problems with the original architect. He actually quit halfway through the build. The people of Medellin decided that they would be fine to finish it and would do it in their own way – and in a completely different style.

I kind of like it – the building is a bit crazy and all feels rather paisa appropriate.

3. House of Memories Museum

This local Medellin museum is housed in an absolutely stunning building that on its own is worth a visit. However, I must confess I did find the House of Memories Museum a little dull compared to the other things to see in Medellin.

The exhibits at the House of Memories Museum Medellin are limited and are mostly in Spanish – which is of course fair enough. Most of the memories are pre-1980 so there is not much on the drug and guerrilla fighting which gave Colombia its no longer relevant bad reputation.

Of course, if this pre-1980 information is of interest to you then you will love it – it is all about what the top things to do in Medellin are for you.

4. Parque Arvi

Arvi Park is on the outskirts of Medellin. It is a massive park where you can hike, trek etc. It takes a couple of metros and a cable car to get to Parque Arvi but it is the largest park in Medellin.

Free guided walks leave every hour from 10-3 at the tourist information point. Arvi Park is one of the major Medellin Colombia tourist attractions.

5. Pueblito Paisa

This kitschy little mock paisa village is located at the top of Cerro Nutibara – a very tall hill. Walking up the hill is a great workout (ok I took a cab but it looked like a great workout

The revamped 50-room property offers a blend of historic and modern with a cozy wood-paneled lobby, elegant pool, central garden and two dining venues. Located in the center of town, it joins the iconic Ojai Valley Inn. Founded in 1923, this is the area’s most well-known lodging, a luxury resort set across 220-acres of landscaped lawns, with a world-class golf course, award-winning spa, and four dining concepts. Ojai’s location makes it ideal for winemaking, and visitors can stop off at Old Creek Ranch & Winery or the Ojai Vineyard Tasting Room to sample local blends. For vintage clothes, meanwhile, there’s Out West Market, offering a fine selection of Western shirts, denim, and cowboy boots. Bibliophiles will be charmed by local institution Bart’s Books, open since 1964, an open-air bookshop with a mix of new, used, and rare tomes. Adventurous music lovers may want to visit during the summer’s Ojai Music Festival, known for experimental classical and contemporary works.

There are plenty of hiking options (Los Padres National Forest is particularly admired), but perhaps the most memorable attraction is the local hot springs, where you can soak in mineral-rich waters. South Beach – is the main restaurant at The Nici and the space it is light and airy with bold prints and art work. We enjoyed Whispering Angel on the outside terrace and fresh seasonal seafood such as South Coast scallops, fish and chips, lobster pappardelle and fish stew.

Old Harry Rocks – the other restaurant at The Nici. A rustic interior with a beach shack feel and sun filled terrace. Right by the pool with a view to the sea. Food is Mediterranean-inspired and we enjoyed most of what we tried such as oysters, cod, steak etc.

Rockwater – the perfect place for lunch if you’re having a day at the beach. There’s an indoor space, outdoor and roof terrace. We loved the fresh fish on the menu and there’s a pizza oven.

Whether I’m heading out on a road trip to chase peak foliage, spending a cozy weekend in Portland, or refreshing my wardrobe with new seasonal staples, fall is the time I lean into comfort, style, and a touch of indulgence.

Here’s how I’m making the most of the season this year:

1. Autumn Ambiance & Cozy Vibes

There’s nothing better than embracing the slower, cozier side of fall. For me, this means lighting a spiced candle, curling up in a cashmere throw, and sipping a warm apple cider while watching the sunset turn the sky orange behind the Boston skyline. I also love treating myself to seasonal sweets—pumpkin spice donuts, maple lattes, and apple pie are non-negotiables.

If you’re looking for the perfect fall day, my advice is to start with a scenic drive (there’s no shortage of foliage routes here in New England), stop at a local orchard or farm stand for fresh cider and donuts, and end your evening with a warm meal and a glass of red wine.

Giorgio Armani, who has died aged 91, was the most influential designer of the modern era. He pioneered a relaxed new look for women and men. He invented modern red-carpet dressing and celebrity marketing. And he was the first designer to democratise his brand by dividing it into multiple mini-labels from cheap chic to haute couture, before extending his reach into restaurants, bars and hotels. Today, almost every big fashion Maison copies his business model.

How do I know? Because I watched him do it, interviewing him and reporting on his business for three decades for the Times of London.

In the 1980s Armani became the first designer to rip – literally – the stuffing out of tailoring by introducing looser fitting but still flattering clothes. He blurred the lines between smart and casual, masculine and feminine to create a new, soft, drapey silhouette for women and men. His trademark slouchy elegance set the tone for fashion for the next 25 years and was reflected in the rise of sportswear and the introduction of new business dress codes, such as 'dress down' and 'smart casual.'

He made men comfortable with the idea of buying and wearing fashion for the first time – and not just Samuel L Jackson and David Beckham. I – like many men – still remember the first navy two-button, soft-shoulder suit I bought in Emporio Armani on Brompton Road in London. It cost £500 but, wearing it, I felt a million dollars.

In his house, a converted 17th-century 3,000 sq ft palazzo on Via Borgonuovo in central Milan, he once summed up his approach telling me: “I am most proud of the deconstruction of design. The difference between me and other designers is that my aesthetic does not dominate. My aim is never to overwhelm the character of the wearer. You see many designers have resorted to producing headline-grabbing, over-the-top costumes for effect. People in Armani look themselves.”

To market all his wares, Armani invented red-carpet dressing – translation: celebrity marketing – way before anyone had imagined Instagram. In the early eighties he became the first designer to decamp to Los Angeles for Oscars week to dress the likes of Robert de Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer. Soon, almost every celebrity wanted to wear Armani, as I found out when he took me to the Vanity Fair Oscars party in Los Angeles in 2007 and took great pride in introducing me to every star “wearing me”.

He went on to leverage his Hollywood connections to get into the movies themselves, creating wardrobes for American Gigolo, The Untouchables, Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction and The Wolf of Wall Street.

Back in Milan he became the first designer to divide his brand into almost a dozen mini-labels, from the cheap Armani Jeans and A/X Armani Exchange, through Emporio Armani and Collezioni, up to the wildly expensive Black Label and Privé couture. He created accessories, including watches, and fragrances for each. This 'brands within a brand' strategy made his style accessible to everyone – whatever their budget – without cheapening the overall Armani name.

Goodfellas (1990)

In the 1990s he went further, diversifying into make-up and skincare, homewares with his casa range and he opened restaurants, cafes and later in the noughties hotels in Milan and Dubai. There was even an Armani Mercedes car. At the opening of his first hotel in the Burj Khalifa in Dubai in 2010 he told me: “I have invented ‘Armani world.’ An entire story."

This 'something for everyone' made Armani more than a label. It became the first complete lifestyle fashion brand worth today almost $10 billion. Today, consumers can – if they really want to – live Armani 24-hours a day. They can wake up in Armani sheets, go to the gym in Armani sportswear, have breakfast in an Armani cafe, sipping cappuccino out of an Armani cup. They can go to work in an Armani suit, wearing an Armani watch. When the day is over they can drink an Armani martini.

Over dinner in one of his branded Nobu restaurants – a joint venture with the Japanese super chef Nobu Matsuhisa and De Niro – they can plan their next holiday in an Armani resort before returning home to a square of Armani chocolate in their Armani bed.

It was a lifestyle which the CEO, founder, chairman, creative director, chief designer and owner lived and which sustained him. When I first interviewed him three decades ago he answered my tentative question about retirement by exclaiming: “Give up work? Work is my life. I am not one to sit back and take the easy way out. Work excites me, it keeps me fresh and on my toes. Why would I want to stop?” He was working until his final days, communicating by phone and Zoom with designers in Milan working on his collections for next month’s fashion week.

He was a hard-charging boss – he used to exhort his staff to “pull their balls out” when he felt they were not working as creatively as they could, even the women. But the man who was born into a working-class family in Piacenza, just outside Milan, and who began his fashion career as a window dresser in La Rinascente, the leading department store in Italy’s commercial capital, was humble.

“When I sold my VW Beetle to buy cloth to found my business, my ambitions were limited to making a success of clothing and even then I imagined working on a fairly small scale – selling to Italy and a few select retailers abroad. The way the Armani label has grown is something I could never have imagined,” he told me.

He had simple tastes, which may seem an odd thing to say of a man who had private jets, yachts and many homes in locations such as St Tropez and Antigua. But he was happiest at his modest stone house on Pantelleria, the tiny volcanic island off the coast of Sicily. “At the time I first visited, there was nothing on Pantelleria; no running water, no electricity. I had to bring it all. But I was in love with the place and I still am. I wear blue shorts and blue T-shirts, and go for walks and swim.”

Critics complained that his style was so simple it was boring. The New Yorker once dismissed the brand as “staid and repetitive... more Volkswagen than Mercedes.” Signor Armani was having none of it. “I avoid explosive fashion because explosions don’t last. They disappear immediately and leave nothing but ashes,” he retorted. “I believe that you should be true to your own vision and hope that a constituency out there shares your taste. Fashion’s purpose is to make it easier and more elegant to live. Otherwise what is it about? It’s just a game. Worth nothing.”

He has been true to his vision for 50 years and tens of millions of customers around the world have been true to him. Farewell, the maestro of Milan. You did it all, you did it first and you did it right.

The Next Letter

We started off the year sharing my father’s work, an alphabet he was working on at the time of his passing. At the end of 2024, we found his complete work and are releasing each letter throughout the year. This week, we share the next letter.

K – KNOW. Learn to KNOW. Spread love and positivity wherever you go.

During a recent coaching session, I found myself overwhelmed by the myriad of obligations in my life. You know how it is—there’s always something to do. I could hear myself saying, “I have to do this, and I have to do that, and this, and that…” I was clearly in “stress mode.” Not a pretty sight.

Marsha, my wise and wonderful coach, gently interrupted my frantic monologue. In her calm, reassuring voice, she asked, “Beth, instead of focusing on what you HAVE to do, what is it that you KNOW to do?”

That question was a revelation. It reminded me why we have coaches. It got me thinking: What do I KNOW to do? When we tap into our inner knowledge, aren’t we empowering ourselves to be truly authentic? Aren’t we, in essence, letting our conscience be our guide?

Consider this shift in perspective:

I “have” to work late vs. I “know” to go home and be with my family.

I “have” to respond to win vs. I “know” to respond with compassion.

I “have” to buy a new outfit vs. I “know” the clothes I have are fine.

I “have” to maintain a perfect house vs. I “know” I should play with my kids.

I “have” to make an impression vs. I “know” I am enough already.

Operating from a place of “have to” dishonors that inner voice whispering, “Listen to me—I know what’s best for you.” When we focus on the “have to’s,” we chase external validation and neglect our true selves.

By doing what we “know” to do, we express our authentic selves and let our intuition guide us. This approach enriches our lives and shapes our future in meaningful ways.

Next time you find yourself overwhelmed, take a moment to get quiet and ask, “What is it that I KNOW to do here?” The answer will reveal your true priorities and guide you towards them. Follow your heart!

London’s Most Exciting New Restaurant Openings

Summer’s over and the city is back: fall is when London’s restaurant scene really comes into its own. This September is promising a bumper load of new openings, from international exports to home-grown talent.

While a lot of the new London openings are just that (new), in a time where the news headlines are full of downbeat tales of the decline of hospitality, seeing established industry figures continuing to invest in experimental new ventures feels like a vote of confidence in the city’s dining future.

It’s these months of the year when the ingredients are at their best, too. After a hot summer, hedgerows are heavy with berries and orchards are weighed down by apples; wild mushrooms are starting to appear and kale is breaking soil. Chefs are spoiled with choice – it might just be the most exciting time of the year to run a kitchen. These are the hottest new restaurant in London right now.

Labombe by Trivet, September 16

Down in southeast London, in village-like Bermondsey, Trivet (run by Fat Duck-alum Johnny Lake and Isa Bal) has steadily risen to become one of the city’s most esteemed restaurants, with two Michelin stars. Now, nearly six years after opening, the Trivet team is branching out to Mayfair to open Labombe – a wine bar and restaurant inside the Como Metropolitan hotel on Old Park Lane, in the space that used to house celebrity drinking favourite the Met Bar. Initially run as a trial concept at Trivet on Monday evenings, Labombe will be serving more relaxed cooking with a focus on specialty wines. It sounds like a place where Lake and Bal will be having a lot of fun.

Kudu, September 16

Once a mainstay on the no longer up-and-coming and instead firmly established Peckham restaurant scene, Kudu is making the move to Marylebone. Some devotees lamented the loss of a beloved neighborhood spot, but owners Amy Corbin and Patrick Williams Amy Patrick heralded it as an “exciting new chapter” in an Instagram post. The new Kudu will remain true to its roots, and continue serving South African-inspired dishes, with a focus on meat and fish cooked over an open-flame charcoal braai (barbecue). Interior pictures are still sparse, but a sneak peek shows a warm dining room with southern African inspired decor. Peckham’s loss is Marylebone’s gain.

As well as the headline Carbone, with the opening of The Chancery Rosewood come a few other interesting restaurants, the first of which was Serra. At the helm is chef Alex Povall (formerly of Berenjak, Hartnett Holder and Co and Murano), making his luxury hotel debut with a Mediterranean menu that fits neatly into London’s current appetite for the region’s cuisine. Dishes lean into the flavors of southern Italy and Greece, featuring mezze platters, grilled seafood and handmade pastas designed for sharing, guided by a ‘small-farm-to-big-table’ ethos.

Michael Caines at The Stafford, September 16

London has no shortage of fine British dining, but until now Michael Caines has kept his cooking outside the capital. His first London restaurant, taking over the former Game Bird at The Stafford hotel, brings his produce-led 'terroir cuisine' to Mayfair. Following a soft launch from 5–16 September, it opens fully on the 17th. The menu leans into British sourcing with a contemporary European touch, Dover sole from Brixham, beef Wellington, all underpinned by the sustainable fishing and farming practices that define his Devon flagship.

One of London’s most storied dining rooms, The Grill at The Dorchester returns this September with all the expected bells and whistles. Striking chandeliers and Bentley banquettes set the tone, while head chef Jacob Keen-Downs (formerly of Gold, Notting Hill) delivers a menu that balances modern dining with classic appeal. Think tuna tartare prepared tableside, a signature seafood platter and beef Wellington for a touch of theatre. “Lighting Up the Stone Plateau” Project

The “Lighting Up the Stone Plateau” project was launched to address one of the greatest challenges for residents in Ha Giang’s stone plateau: the lack of light at night. The rugged terrain and an incomplete power grid have created numerous obstacles for ethnic communities. Without light, navigating the difficult roads becomes dangerous, children’s studies are interrupted, and daily life is significantly harder.

To provide a sustainable and eco-friendly solution, the LuxGroup Foundation team is scheduled to travel directly to Ha Giang from September 19 to 21, 2025. They will not only bring the equipment but will also collaborate closely with local authorities and residents to install each light. This collective effort ensures the project’s effectiveness and represents a journey of sharing, connection, and partnership. The 25 lights to be installed are expected to bring a positive and lasting change to the Hầu Chúa Ván and Séo Lủng villages. The cost of one light is 1,480,000 VND.

I’m on a mission to find the very best family-friendly luxury hotels in the world – places that are perfect for our two children but also pleasing to us parents with high standards! And I think we’re getting a bit addicted to one brand in particular…

The Concept of Ikos Resorts

If you ask any luxury family travel enthusiast (or ask Google or ChatGPT) what is the best luxury all-inclusive family hotel in Europe, the name Ikos Resorts will come up again and again… Now Ikos is actually a hotel group with five hotels in Greece (and a new one coming next year) and two hotels in Spain and has become firmly established as the name in all-inclusive. Ikos live by a concept of ‘Unconditional luxury’ whereby what’s included is limitless – that is your accommodation, all food and drink (including a la carte restaurants and drinks) there’s no supplements for more premium ingredients or drinks, kids club for children age 4 plus and activities and entertainment. We loved our stay at Ikos Porto Petro in Mallorca two years ago and it was time to try the concept again, this time we booked Ikos Aria in Kos, Greece.

Ikos Aria in Kos perfectly blends stylish design, a refined atmosphere and adults-only areas with an abundance of family-friendly facilities. Located on the island of Kos the hotel is found on 47 acres of beach with views of the Aegean Sea, plenty of lush gardens and billowing palm trees. Something I loved is that the hotel is only 15 minutes from the airport so there’s no dragging transfer when you arrive and no car sick child!

The Deluxe Collection

At the Ikos Resorts you can opt to elevate your stay even more, as we did, and stay in the Deluxe Collection. The Deluxe Collection offers signature suites in the best locations around the hotel. Booking a deluxe collection suite gives access to to the deluxe areas of the hotel. At Ikos Aria there was a dedicated Deluxe lobby with a separate concierge that also included Seasons restaurant for breakfast and lunch (other guests can dine there for dinner) and the Deluxe bar.

The was a large Deluxe pool with cabana and a dedicated area on the beach! You can see the extra deluxe offerings at a glance on the hotel website and I’ll be referring back to them in this review. For me the benefits of going to deluxe was the added level of privacy and exclusivity plus the service was better as the staff are serving a smaller portion of guests. I was blown away by the deluxe concierge and the what’s app service as they always replied straight away.

Hotel Design and Our Room

Ikos hotels have a signature look but with each tailored to the unique location. We loved the minimalist design that is infused with Mediterranean charms. The feel is white, bright and airy all made with natural materials and with a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor and there’s even historical touches with ancient preserved ruins that have been roped off linked to the history of Kos as the birthplace of Hippocrates. While ratten pieces, egg chairs and natural wood give the hotel it’s beachy, boho feel, touches of gold and marble serve to remind you that this is a luxury five star hotel.

However Ikos still a place that invites adventure for children. Sort of like a stylish playground for the whole family.

One criticism I would make is that there wasn’t much to distinguish the restaurants from each other and they looked very much the same which apart from varying views and slightly different chairs it gave the feeling of dining in the same restaurant and not leaving the hotel.

Press Hosts Inaugural Napa Valley Vineyard Dinner

This September, however, head chef Philip Tessier invites guests not into the convivial dining room, but out into the Oakville vineyards for its inaugural Between the Vines dinner. Hosted on September 20, the occasion will honor the wines of the Rudd Estate, which was founded in 1996 by the late Leslie Rudd – the same hospitality mogul that opened Press restaurant.

His daughter Samantha now owns both the winery and the restaurant, duly upholding her father’s reputation. Guided by Samantha, the evening will begin with a walk through the by-appointment-only Rudd Estate, discovering both the vineyards (best-known for their Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec) and the adjoining gardens, often used for entertaining.

For the first Between the Vines dinner, chef Tessier and his team will cook in the open air, over fire. The menu reflects Press’s more refined regular offering, but nudges toward an informal edge, inspired by the al-fresco setting. Served family-style at a long table slotted between the regimented rows of vines, dishes will include jars of trout rillette, scorched octopus with eggplant, charcoal-roasted potatoes and hunks of grilled tomahawk steaks, alongside smoked mushrooms.

Dessert will be served by the lake and made by Under-Study, a newly-opened experimental local bakery, cafe and marketplace (also under the Rudd family umbrella). Expect a Napa Valley pear and almond tart with poached grapes and piles of the chantilly cream.

For the occasion, Samantha will delve into the Rudd family cellars to retrieve some rare vintages and large-format bottles, each sensitively paired with Tessier’s dishes.

After a near sell out, a limited run of extra tickets have been released, including a number of VIP packages. Available for two, this zhuzhed up offering includes the entire Between the Vines dining experience, as well as transportation to and from the winery, in partnership with BMW. For VIP guests, there is also the option to get behind the wheels of the newest BMWs in an exclusive test drive experience.

For now, September 20 remains the only date in the Between the Vines calendar, but more events are promised.

For those looking to explore local culture, cafés, boutiques, and museums lie around every corner, making Hafnia an ideal base for both short city breaks and longer immersive stays. Despite being so centrally located, the hotel maintains a peaceful atmosphere, thanks in part to the quiet, narrow streets and the proximity to the sea. Amongst the world’s most respected spirits, few can claim the rarity and prestige of the Hermitage Siècle d’Or 100 Year Old Cognac. Matured for a full century in Limousin oak barrels in the heart of the Grande Champagne region, known as the Premier Cru of Cognac, this remarkable expression is believed to be the oldest barrel-aged cognac ever released. It represents the very pinnacle of history, time and rarity.

Crafted from Ugni Blanc grapes grown in the exceptional terroir of Lignières Sonneville and distilled in Segonzac using traditional Alembic Charentais stills, this single-estate cognac captures the essence of Grande Champagne at its most refined. Over one hundred years of ageing has led to an expression of exceptional depth, balance and smoothness, creating a spirit of incomparable character.

On the nose, it reveals aromas of cocoa, dried fig, burnt sugar, truffle and cloves. The palate unfolds with layers of burnt toffee, mushroom, ginger and candied fruit, before finishing with a long, elegant note of kumquat. The result is a complexity and richness that can only be achieved through such extraordinary ageing, with the distinctive rancio that defines the world’s rarest cognacs.

The presentation is as exquisite as the spirit itself. Only 68 one-litre decanters have been made, each hand-blown and hand-cut by Cumbria Crystal, the last English producer of entirely handmade luxury crystal. Finished with gold leaf engraving and individually numbered, every decanter is housed in a bespoke wooden case and accompanied by a signed letter from Hermitage Chairman, David Baker.

Mandarin Oriental will debut in Downtown Dubai

The luxury hotel brand Mandarin Oriental is set to expand its footprint in Dubai with the October 2025 opening of Mandarin Oriental Downtown, located within the striking Wasl Tower on Sheikh Zayed Road. Featuring 259 luxurious rooms and suites, 224 branded residences, and panoramic views of both the Arabian Gulf and Dubai’s skyline, the property will combine sophisticated urban hospitality with world-class amenities, including a rooftop helipad for seamless arrivals. The tower, distinguished by the region’s tallest ceramic façade and a twisting design enhanced by airflow-optimizing fins, sets a new benchmark for sustainable architecture in the city. Guests will experience a holistic approach to wellness at The Spa, which blends ancient healing practices with modern treatments across two dedicated floors, while culinary enthusiasts can enjoy ten diverse dining concepts ranging from French and Chinese to Greek and Italian, alongside lively nightlife venues. Marking a milestone for the brand, the property will also introduce Dubai’s first Mandarin Oriental branded residences, offering the comfort of private living paired with the group’s legendary service and facilities, reinforcing the brand’s reputation for redefining luxury living and hospitality.

Mandarin Oriental will open Mandarin Oriental, Xi’an in 2029, marking the brand’s first urban resort in Northwestern China and offering a blend of tranquility, wellness, and cultural immersion in one of the country’s most historic cities. Located in the former capital of 13 dynasties and home to the Terracotta Warriors, the resort will draw inspiration from the Tang Dynasty while delivering refined luxury through 166 spacious rooms and suites with outdoor terraces, natural hot spring experiences, and seven private villas with pools. The Spa at Mandarin Oriental will feature extensive wellness facilities, including exclusive hot spring pavilions, an indoor-outdoor infinity pool, a children’s pool, and holistic rituals, reinforcing the brand’s leadership in wellbeing. Designed by ACPV ARCHITECTS, the property will embrace natural materials, understated elegance, and a deep sense of place tied to Xi’an’s heritage and seasons. Review: PAZ Restaurant, Faroe Islands

This is only the second restaurant review on my blog—the first being Central in Lima—and I’m excited to share my experience at PAZ Restaurant, the culinary crown of the Faroe Island. Led by Chef Poul Andrias Ziska, PAZ is a modern, elegant restaurant, which earned two Michelin stars just weeks after opening in April 2025. Raised in the Faroes, Ziska trained at world-renowned kitchens like Geranium and Mugaritz before redefining Nordic fine dining at KOKS. At PAZ, he brings that ambition back home—crafting a multi-course tasting menu rooted deeply in local traditions, focusing on sustainability and storytelling through flavor. His dishes honor a time-honored technique called ræst—fermentation in the cold, salty Faroese air—which imparts fermented depth, like blue-cheese notes on meat and seafood. The Chef’s Story

PAZ Restaurant is the vision of Chef Poul Andrias Ziska, a Faroese-born culinary talent whose journey has brought modern attention to the archipelago’s rich food culture. Raised in the Faroe Islands, Ziska’s path into fine dining was unconventional. He stumbled into the field almost by chance—starting out working at a pizzeria during his school years, and later deciding to attend culinary school based on that early experience.

Following his formal training, he honed his craft in some of Europe’s most prestigious kitchens, including Geranium in Denmark and Mugaritz in Spain. These experiences forged his technical foundation and deepened his culinary perspective. Returning to the Faroe Islands, Ziska co-led KOKS, earning the restaurant its first Michelin star in 2017 and a second in 2019, establishing it as one of the most revered Michelin-starred establishments in the world.

In 2022, Ziska embarked on an adventurous detour—relocating KOKS to Ilimanaq, Greenland, a tiny settlement on the 69th parallel north accessible only by boat or helicopter. There, he experimented with Greenlandic ingredients such as musk ox, snow crab, whaleblubber, and local berries, offering diners an Arctic tasting menu set against a backdrop of fjords and icebergs.

By early 2025, Ziska returned to the Faroe Islands and redirected his culinary energy into opening PAZ. In a bold move that demonstrated both consistency and ambition, the restaurant secured two Michelin stars within a few weeks of its April debut—making it one of the few restaurants in the world to earn this distinction so soon after opening.

Location

PAZ Restaurant is located inside 62N Hotel in Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands. It’s an unassuming property which just 13 rooms you could almost miss from the street, with minimal signage and a modest façade. The understated setting makes the transition from outside to the dining room feel deliberate and low-key. The restaurant, situated on the hotel’s ground floor, opened as recently as April this year and was awarded two Michelin stars just a few weeks later, making it the only Faroese restaurant currently holding this distinction and the most remote Michelin star restaurant in the world. The famous KOKS restaurant, now closed, was the first in the Faroe Islands to receive a Michelin star.

The dining room – which has an open kitchen at its center – reflects a minimalist Scandinavian aesthetic with subtle Faroese touches. Light wood, clean lines, and a restrained palette create a calm, uncluttered space. Local materials such as wool and stone add warmth and create a connection to the surrounding landscape, while large windows allow plenty of natural daylight to enter. The result is both contemporary and distinctly rooted in the islands.

PAZ’ dining room features 8 tables, including a communal dining table with eight seats, reserved exclusively for solo travelers. The latter is a thoughtful arrangement that allows individuals to enjoy the full tasting menu in the company of others, fostering conversation and a sense of inclusion without compromising the intimacy of the experience. I chose this option myself and highly enjoyed it, as it added an extra layer of connection and made the evening even more memorable.

On arrival, guests are first welcomed at the open kitchen. The team explains the structure of the menu, key ingredients, and any seasonal variations. This brief introduction sets expectations and establishes a direct connection between diners and the cooks preparing the meal.
