Lately I have been feeling bored with my tech job. Most days I have little work and basically feel like I'm deteriorating, both mentally and physically. I wanted to find a new hobby and so I learned to crochet and I enjoyed completing a few projects. Woodworking classes have caught my eye as well, which is truly exciting. I have always been fascinated by it. My father was a woodworker, built most of the furniture in our house, and I have fond memories of watching him work. However, as he grew older and his eyesight declined, he stopped working gradually. He passed away two years ago, but it was through him that I developed an appreciation for the craft. It would be a great way to appreciate my dad's dedication and passion. But I am feeling hesitant to sign up.

Despite my father's woodworking background, I'm not sure if I possess his creativity. But I've generally found myself ready to fix and DIY when there is a need. Many classes offer beginner workshops, but is some level of prior experience necessary? Living in an apartment, I'm also unsure what small projects I could practice at home without power tools. Is it worthwhile to invest $500 to $600 in introductory woodworking classes? Lastly, I wonder if I'd fit in with the rest of the class. While I know it's unnecessary overthinking, I can't shake the nervousness about signing up. I'd appreciate this community's thoughts and any words of encouragement. However, this project has not been completed or is even near completion.

He said that he would work in it over the weekends and invested like 3k into new saws and equipment for this bed. However, he has changed the design 2 times, taken it apart, and started over and over again. It’s been 2 years and we are sleeping on a half finished bed. I believe he has no intention of finishing it and we have wood parts all over the bedroom.

He has also promised to make a dresser and 2 nightstands. At this rate, we might have those in 6 years. I want to give him a deadline or just go buy a bed set. Tung oil is a lot less easy to "wash" than linseed oil, but it's also harder and while linseed oil will be waterproof if it's washed and installed *in the wood* rather than on, Tung is just waterproof.

Washing tung oil is a way to get rid of free fatty acids, which are a sticky but unstable component of tung - something 4% or a little less by CAS spec for most raw tung oil sold.

Before we go further - Tung raw with no driers in it fully cured will be too hard to scratch with a fingernail even when it's on wood. I don't know where the rumor started that if you don't get polymerized tung, it won't dry hard. It will. if you keep it in the surface of the wood rather than on the wood as a film finish, it'll harden the top layer of the wood and fare better than it does as a film type finish. However, I have found it to dry even raw unwashed type as a thin film that still is too hard to dent with a fingernail or take a scratch. Tung only, vs. what we're making here (oil, wax and an aromatic terpene solvent. The terpene solvent may prove useful also if you end up choosing a harder wax like carnauba or any other wax that will only dissolve in aromatic solvents - or that is, will not dissolve in mineral spirits or naphtha).

More info in comments:

https://preview.redd.it/yyzdp0k97fxc1.png?width=889&format=png&auto=webp&s=1633a6cabf32a616ca6ed0c371b2591604ac7ea3

after first application (will update with additional coats) and then later. Notice the color on the left - varnishes tend to bring some color tone, but the oils seem to darken and leave somewhat flat.

Curly cherry may have been a bad choice - it will absorb enormous amounts of finish on a quartered board unlike something harder.

Varnish just rubbed in with a piece of cotton cloth. There is a three dimensional aspect beginning to occur with the varnish. However, without making the varnish longer oil to limit sheen, this varnish is capable of a full gloss. I hear that's unstylish.

   submitted by /u/AlloyScratcher
[link] [comments]

First Bed Build https://www.reddit.com/r/woodworking/comments/1cfujt0/first_bed_build/ Woodworking: all things made from trees. urn:uuid:da0f0226-18c0-fab6-b0b2-c268351cbad3 Mon, 29 Apr 2024 05:09:25 -0400

First shot at a big project like this, first time using dowels.
