April is Confederate History and Heritage Month in the Old Dominion, as well as in many states across the South. As part of the celebration, and in an effort to educate the citizens of the Commonwealth, we will present a Q&A each day, from a Confederate Catechism, by Lyon Gardiner Tyler, 1853-1935; the son of President, John Tyler, who also was a member of the Confederate congress. He was a professor of literature at the College of William and Mary, and served as President of the College of William and Mary from 1888 until 1919.

12. Did Lincoln, by his conquest of the South, save the Union?

No. The old Union was a union of consent; the present Union is one of force. For many years after the war the South was held as a subject province, and any privileges it now enjoys are mere concessions from its conquerors, not rights inherited from the Constitution. The North after the war had in domestic negro rule a whip which England never had over Ireland. To escape from it, the South became grateful for any kind of government. The present Union is a great Northern nation based on force and controlled by Northern majorities, to which the South, as a conquered province, has had to conform all its policies and ideals. The Federal authority is only Northern authority. Today (1935) the Executive, the Cabinet, the Supreme Court, the Ministers at foreign courts are all Northern men. The South has as little share in the government, and as little chance of furnishing a President, as Norway or Switzerland.

Towards sundown General Lee mounted his dapple-gray horse Traveller and started to his headquarters a mile to the rear; and now occurred a most remarkable exhibition of the affection entertained towards him by his army, and a display of deep feeling on the part of large bodies of men which I suppose has been rarely equaled in history. Along the road, on the hills on each side, between the orchard and headquarters, our army was encamped. The men had been lying in camp all day brooding over what had happened, and eating Uncle Sam's bread and meat. Being rested and fed, there was room for sentiment.

When they saw the well-known figure of General Lee approaching, there was a general rush from each side to the road to greet him as he passed, and two solid walls of men were formed along the whole distance. Their officers followed and behind the lines of men were groups of them, mounted and dismounted, awaiting his coming. I saw something unusual was about to happen, so I sprang upon Magic and followed, keeping a short distance behind, but near enough to hear what was said as General Lee passed. As soon as he entered this avenue of these old soldiers, the flower of his army, the men who had stood to their duty through thick and thin in so many battles, wild heartfelt cheers arose which so touched General Lee that tears filled his eyes and trickled down his cheeks as he rode his splendid charger, hat in hand, bowing his acknowledgments. This exhibition of feeling on his part found quick response from the men, whose cheers changed to choking sobs as with streaming eyes and many cries of affection they waved their hats as he passed. Each group began in the same way with cheers and ended in the same way with sobs, all the way to his quarters. Grim bearded men threw themselves on the ground, covered their faces with their hands and wept like children. Officers of all ranks made no attempt to conceal their feelings, but sat on their horses and cried aloud and among these I remember seeing Gen. W. H. F. Lee, Gen. R. E. Lee's son, much moved.

Traveller, General Lee's horse, took as much pleasure in applause as a human being, and always acknowledged the cheers of troops by tosses of his head, and the men frequently cheered for it, to which he would answer back as often as they did. On this, Traveller's last appearance before them, his head was tossing a return to the salutes all along the line, which greatly added to the effect. Many expressions of confidence and affection were given which must have been very pleasant to General Lee. One man, I remember, extended his arms and with an emphatic gesture said, "I love you just as well as ever, General Lee." After reaching his tent the men assembled around it and General Lee made them a short address, but I was not near enough to hear what he said.

After spending the day cleaning up our page of vulgar, hate-filled, and profane comments from monument haters, I am reflecting on a truth that is absolute, but not universally acknowledged. Those that attack us, our monuments, and our Confederate ancestors are almost ALWAYS left wing, Godless radicals, who hate us because our heritage is deeply rooted in our Christian faith. A quick peek at their social media profile will almost ALWAYS reveal a liberal who hates everything conservative and is still throwing a temper tantrum over the fact that Trump won the election. Because WE put him there, they decided to go after what they knew would hurt us the most...our history and heritage...our kin.

They are all consumed and blood thirsty, and have managed to spin false narratives that are blindly accepted and repeated by the main stream media, academia, government run schools, and municipalities controlled by leftists. Their plan is to tear down our flags and monuments and bully us into submission.

They will fail.

They have greatly underestimated our resolve and our God. 150 years of Yankee subjugation has not extinguished the flame our grandfathers kindled, and neither will the removal of a few flags, monuments and memorials. They have forgotten whose blood flows through our veins.

We will never forget. We will never forgive. We will never submit.

Captain Robert E. Lee Jr. was a soldier, farmer, and biographer of his father, General Robert E. Lee.

When the War for Southern Independence broke out in 1861, his father and his two older brothers, Custis and Rooney, all chose to serve Virginia in the Confederate Army. To his mother's dismay, Rob joined them in 1862, enlisting in the Rockbridge Artillery as a private.

During the Battle of Sharpsburg in September 1862, young Robert watched his father ride up to his artillery battery, which had already been heavily engaged. Junior stood by expecting to hear a few words of affection from his father, but Lee did not recognize his own son, hidden by the grime of black powder on his face. When Junior finally spoke up to ask if they would be thrown back into the fight, the general recognized him by his voice. "Yes, my son. You must do what you can to drive those people back," Lee said.
