Some people think that simply reading a social story to a student will change their behavior, but that&rsquo;s not how they work. When used correctly, they can be a valuable tool, but they need to be structured thoughtfully and used in the right situations.</p><p>Let&rsquo;s break down what social stories are, how they should be written, and what research says about their effectiveness.</p><h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Are Social Stories?</h2><p>Social stories were developed by <strong><a href="https://carolgraysocialstories.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Carol Gray</a></strong> in the 1990s. They are individualized stories designed to describe a situation from the student&rsquo;s perspective.</p><figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="595" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/BLog-Post-Social-Stories-Research-24326-4-1024x595.jpg" alt="Social stories indicates that they an be used to help student understand expectations. Sometimes in school, I have to wait for the other children to finish their work before we do the next activity. Sometimes waiting is hard for me.</p><p>When I talk to myself, other kids can&rsquo;t hear the teacher or do their work. My teachers want me to be quiet while waiting. When I feel like talking, I can ask Miss N for a toy to hold, or I can just talk to her.</p><p>If I&rsquo;m quiet while waiting, I earn a token. When I earn enough tokens, I can pick a fun activity. My teachers will be very proud of me if I can be quiet.&rdquo;</p><h2 class="wp-block-heading">Carol Gray&rsquo;s Components of a Social Story</h2><p><a href="https://carolgraysocialstories.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Carol Gray&rsquo;s model </a>includes several types of sentences that help structure an effective social story:</p><ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Descriptive Sentences</strong> &ndash; Explain where, when, and why the situation happens. (e.g., &ldquo;Sometimes in school, I have to wait for the other children to finish their work before we do the next activity.&rdquo;)</li> <li><strong>Perspective Sentences</strong> &ndash; Describe how other people feel or react. (e.g., &ldquo; When I talk to myself, other kids can&rsquo;t hear the teacher or do their work.&rdquo;)</li> <li><strong>Affirmative Sentences</strong> &ndash; Reinforce why the skill is important. (e.g., &ldquo; My teachers want me to be quiet while waiting.&rdquo;)</li> <li><strong>Directive Sentences</strong> &ndash; Suggest what the student <em>can</em> do. (e.g., &ldquo; When I feel like talking, I could ask my teacher for a toy to hold or just talk to her.&rdquo;)</li> <li><strong>Control Sentences</strong> &ndash; Help the student remember strategies. These can sometimes be written by the student.</li> <li><strong>Cooperative Sentences</strong> &ndash; Explain how others can help. (e.g., &ldquo; If I need help waiting, my teacher can remind me to take deep breaths.&rdquo;)</li></ul><figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="595" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/BLog-Post-Social-Stories-Research-24326-1024x595.jpg" alt="Social Stories Research-You may need more than 1 social story for an issue. (2011)</a> found:</p><ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>6 studies</strong> showed social stories were effective or very effective.</li> <li><strong>12 studies</strong> showed they were ineffective in making meaningful changes.</li></ul><p>A <a href="https://doi.org/10.1177/1088357615613516" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>2018 meta-analysis</strong> <strong>by Qi et al.</strong></a><strong> </strong>of<strong> </strong>22 studies found:</p><ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>7 studies</strong> showed strong evidence that social stories worked.</li> <li><strong>4 studies</strong> showed that students maintained the skill even after the intervention ended.</li> <li>Social stories were <strong>more effective for reducing challenging behaviors</strong> than for increasing social communication.</li></ul><p><a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/24827530" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A <strong>review of 41 single-subject studies</strong>, Leaf et al. (2015)</a> found:</p><ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>3 studies</strong> showed strong evidence that social stories worked.</li> <li><strong>17 studies</strong> showed partial effectiveness.</li> <li><strong>21 studies</strong> did not have convincing evidence of effectiveness.</li></ul><p>One challenge with social story research is that they are rarely used alone. In real-world settings, teachers and therapists often pair them with <strong><a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/classroom-visuals-for-autism-setup/" data-type="post" data-id="5805">visual supports</a>, <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/reinforcement-in-classroom_19/" data-type="post" data-id="1106">reinforcement systems</a>, and other interventions</strong>. This makes it difficult to measure exactly how much impact the social story itself has.</p><h2 class="wp-block-heading">Do Social Stories Work for Every Student?</h2><p>The answer is <strong>no</strong>.</p><p>Some students respond very well to social stories, while others show little to no change.</p><p>For example, I worked with one student who <strong>loved</strong> social stories. Any time a new issue came up, I could write a social story on the whiteboard, and he would immediately engage with it. We would later put it on paper so he could review it, and it really helped him understand expectations.</p><p>For him, social stories made a huge difference.</p><p>But for other students, they didn&rsquo;t seem to have much impact.</p><p>Because of this, social stories are <strong>best used as part of a larger strategy</strong>, rather than the only intervention.</p><h2 class="wp-block-heading">Social Stories Are an Antecedent Strategy</h2><p>Most experts classify social narratives as an <strong><a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/designing-behavior-support-plans-tha/" data-type="post" data-id="738">antecedent strategy</a></strong>&mdash;meaning they help prevent behavior challenges before they happen.</p><p>A well-written social story:<br>&#10004;&#65039; Prepares a student for a new or difficult situation.<br>&#10004;&#65039; Helps them understand expectations.<br>&#10004;&#65039; Gives them tools to handle challenges.</p><figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="595" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/BLog-Post-Social-Stories-Research-24326-2-1024x595.jpg" alt="Social Stories research shows they are used as an antecedent strategy for behavioral support. For example, in the earlier waiting quietly story, the student also had <strong><a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/3-ways-to-make-positive-reinforcemen/" target="_blank" data-type="post" data-id="709" rel="noreferrer noopener">a token system</a></strong> as a reinforcement strategy. And that&rsquo;s why most of my social narratives in my store, like the <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/7736873?utm_source=acr-blog-&amp;utm_campaign=managing-anxiety-toolkit" target="_blank" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/7736873?utm_source=acr-blog-&amp;utm_campaign=managing-anxiety-toolkit" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Anxiety Toolkit,</strong></a> include significant visual supports and strategies in addition to the social stories themselves.</p><p>If we could just tell students what to do and expect them to follow through, we wouldn&rsquo;t need social stories in the first place. Establish a Classroom Mission Statement</h2><p>Imagine what you want the culture or the feeling of your classroom to be. &nbsp;Gather ideas from all the staff about what they think the environment of the classroom should be like. &nbsp; How do you think the staff should talk to&nbsp;students? </p><p>At the beginning of the year, share the classroom mission statement of what you want the classroom to be like and solicit ideas from the rest of the staff about how they feel. &nbsp;</p><figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Special-Education-Classroom-Building-Classroom-Teams-Zoning-Plans-Toolkit-2746615?utm_source=acr-blog-&amp;utm_campaign=zoning-toolkit" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Blog-5581-5-Ways-to-Build-Teamwork-with-Classroom-Mission-Statements-in-the-Special-Education-Classroom-6-1024x576.jpg" alt="Tailored Tools for Special Education Success Examples Specific to Special Education Classrooms of All Ages Like Zoning Plans; Tools to Help Get All the Staff on the Same Page including classroom mission statements or vision statements" class="wp-image-24299" srcset="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Blog-5581-5-Ways-to-Build-Teamwork-with-Classroom-Mission-Statements-in-the-Special-Education-Classroom-6-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Blog-5581-5-Ways-to-Build-Teamwork-with-Classroom-Mission-Statements-in-the-Special-Education-Classroom-6-300x169.jpg 300w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Blog-5581-5-Ways-to-Build-Teamwork-with-Classroom-Mission-Statements-in-the-Special-Education-Classroom-6-768x432.jpg 768w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Blog-5581-5-Ways-to-Build-Teamwork-with-Classroom-Mission-Statements-in-the-Special-Education-Classroom-6-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Blog-5581-5-Ways-to-Build-Teamwork-with-Classroom-Mission-Statements-in-the-Special-Education-Classroom-6-600x338.jpg 600w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Blog-5581-5-Ways-to-Build-Teamwork-with-Classroom-Mission-Statements-in-the-Special-Education-Classroom-6.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" data-pin-media="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Blog-5581-5-Ways-to-Build-Teamwork-with-Classroom-Mission-Statements-in-the-Special-Education-Classroom-6.jpg"></a></figure><p>I know that with everything there is to do, this may seem like a lot of talking and discussion. &nbsp; And talking about the culture of the classroom when people have different points of view might be hard to talk about at times. &nbsp;</p><p>However, it&rsquo;s better to have these potentially uncomfortable conversations early rather than having a year in which everyone does their own thing and not everyone agrees with it.</p><div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="alignleft is-resized"><a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/classroom-vision-statement.jpg"><img decoding="async" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/classroom-vision-statement-630x1024.jpg" alt="Creating a Classroom Vision Statement can be helpful in solving collaboration differences down the road." class="wp-image-5585" style="width:441px;height:auto" data-pin-media="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/classroom-vision-statement.jpg"></a></figure></div><p>As the teacher, you can lead this conversation and set out what you think are the important elements of the classroom mission statement. &nbsp;Important elements might include: positive interactions with and among the students and staff, more positive comments towards the students than negative, not talking about the students in front of them if at all possible, focusing on independence as the key goal for each student, and treating each student as an individual.</p><p>You may or may not want to write the classroom mission statement down and post it in the classroom. &nbsp; You may want to do it more informally and just have it posted through <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/3-ways-to-get-adults-language-in-the-classroom-back-on-track-with-a-freebie/">quotes or reminders that support the vision</a> in the classroom. &nbsp;</p><p>Either way, focus on the 2-3 elements that you think best define the vision for the culture of the class.</p><p></p><p>A classroom mission statement might be:</p><blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"><p>In classroom 3, we value each student&rsquo;s independence and need for individual attention. &nbsp; We want to provide positive models to our students in our language&nbsp;and actions and help them to be as independent in all skills as possible.</p></blockquote><h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="2-value-what-others-say">2. Value What Others Say</h2><p>This may seem pretty obvious, but it&rsquo;s important to make sure that you not only listen to others but you solicit team members&rsquo; input into how the classroom is run. &nbsp; When creating the classroom mission statement for the classroom, gather others&rsquo; input and listen to it. &nbsp;</p><p>If you can, incorporate it into the mission or focus of the room. &nbsp; If it&rsquo;s not something you can live with, discuss it. &nbsp; In discussing it,<a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/listen-to-improve-staff-interactions/"> listen carefully</a>. &nbsp; It&rsquo;s important to develop the classroom mission statement and solve problems collaboratively. &nbsp; This may not always be possible, but valuing others&rsquo; perspectives is critical to making it work.</p><h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="3-use-i-messages">3. Use &ldquo;I&rdquo; Messages</h2><p>I messages are essentially starting statements with &ldquo;I.&rdquo; &nbsp;Saying &ldquo;I feel that the classroom should focus on the positive behaviors the students show more than the negative.&rdquo; &nbsp;</p><p>Focusing on things you have done or said in the past is another good way to put ideas out there without dictating or demanding people adopt your solution. &nbsp; It can soften a correction when you say, &ldquo; So many times I have almost lost my cool with X student, and I had to just walk away and take a break.&rdquo; &nbsp;</p><figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Using-I-Statements-1024x1024.jpg" alt='"So many times I have almost lost my cool with X student, and I had to just walk away and take a break." &nbsp;' class="wp-image-24304" srcset="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Using-I-Statements-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Using-I-Statements-300x300.jpg 300w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Using-I-Statements-150x150.jpg 150w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Using-I-Statements-768x768.jpg 768w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Using-I-Statements-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Using-I-Statements-600x600.jpg 600w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Using-I-Statements-100x100.jpg 100w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Using-I-Statements.jpg 1739w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" data-pin-media="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Using-I-Statements.jpg"></figure><p>This makes having a differing idea or opinion easier to hear and makes you relatable by acknowledging that you have had the same struggle. &nbsp; In discussing issues within the classroom, use &ldquo;I&rdquo; messages as often as possible.</p><h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="4-keep-the-focus-on-the-students-the-outcomes-and-the-goals">4. Keep the Focus on the Students, the Outcomes and the Goals</h2><p>The most significant strategy that can be used to build collaboration within the class is to make sure that the focus stays on the most important piece of the job&ndash;the students. &nbsp; If you are disagreeing or feel you need to ask staff to do something differently, make sure you are stating it in a way that makes it clear it is for the good of the students. &nbsp;Having a classroom mission statement from #1 helps because you can refer back to it.</p><div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/A-teacher-takes-ahand-opens-a-mind-and-touches-a-heart.-1.jpg"><img decoding="async" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/A-teacher-takes-ahand-opens-a-mind-and-touches-a-heart.-1-300x300.jpg" alt="Children are the priority. Our data show that being positive with Brian and redirecting calmly is more likely to calm him down&nbsp;so we have to help each other try to stay calm with him.</p></blockquote><p>Another example might be when a staff member is providing too much support for a student (e.g., doing his art project for him).</p><blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"><p>I know it&rsquo;s hard to wait Sydney out when he is working in art because he is so slow to follow directions. &nbsp; It&rsquo;s hard sometimes because I know that I think the rest of the class needs to move on but we are still waiting for him. &nbsp; It&rsquo;s OK if Sydney doesn&rsquo;t finish parts of the project. &nbsp; The important thing is we want Sydney (and all our students) to learn to be as independent as they can be, so focusing on his doing some smaller part on his own is more important that him finishing the whole project.</p></blockquote><h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="5-ask-how-you-can-help">5. Ask How You Can Help</h2><p>One of the surest way to help facilitate solutions to a problem is to ask how you can help solve it. &nbsp; It puts the problem out there as something to be solved rather than something the other person needs to stop/fix etc. &nbsp;Ask how you can assist them in giving a different response. &nbsp;Clearly if you have established a classroom vision statement and everyone is on board, it will be easier. &nbsp; If everyone isn&rsquo;t onboard, it might be necessary to state the mission, but then ask how you can help to get them to buy into it. &nbsp;</p><p>Asking how you can help them takes the criticism out of the feedback and sets you up as an ally rather than a supervisor. &nbsp;<strong>Our goal is always to solve the problem rather than to be &ldquo;right.&rdquo;</strong></p><p>Instead of:</p><blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"><p>I know that it&rsquo;s really hard to stay right on top of Sally in the hallway, but you have to make sure she doesn&rsquo;t pull the hair of the other kids.</p></blockquote><p>Try:</p><blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"><p>I know that it&rsquo;s really hard to stay right on top of Sally in the hallway and you have done a great job of that. &nbsp; And sometimes it&rsquo;s really hard to catch her before she tries to pull hair. How can I help you with that?</p></blockquote><h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="want-tool-to-help-get-your-classroom-team-on-track-check-them-out-below">Want tool to help get your classroom team on track? Let&rsquo;s dive into how they can help you improve your IEP tracking process and answer some common questions about IEP data collection.</p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Do You Collect Data for Special Education?</h2> <p>I&rsquo;ve written about systems of data collection in the special education classroom&nbsp;<strong><a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/podcasts/how-to-set-up-data-collection-systems-for-your-autism-classroom/" data-type="podcasts" data-id="18726">in a previous podcast episode</a>.</strong>&nbsp; And the key to effective progress monitoring and tracking IEP progress definitely involves putting a system for data collection in place. &nbsp; But what should you have in your system?</p> <p>Collecting data in special education involves more than just checking off boxes&mdash;it&rsquo;s about consistently tracking student progress in a way that reflects real growth over time. And it requires&nbsp;<strong><a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/how-to-graph-instructional-data-with-free-google-sheets-template/" data-type="post" data-id="18753">regular analysis of skills to determine if changes needs to be made in your instruction.</a></strong></p> <p>Whether you&rsquo;re monitoring academic goals, behavior, or social skills, these IEP data collection sheets make it easy to gather the information you need. They&rsquo;re customizable, so you can adjust them to fit each student&rsquo;s specific goals.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/3653482?utm_source=acr-blog-&amp;utm_campaign=instructional-data" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/IEP-Data-Collection-Sheets-Easy-and-Effective-Guide5-1024x576.jpg" alt="GRAPH-AS-YOU-GO IEP data collection sheets *Use with print and go with PDF or add info with Google Slides or PowerPoint *Add your students&rsquo; info and skills you want to track *Template charts and features stay the same. But it can be so much easier when you have examples that can be the right data sheet you need. &nbsp; With these&nbsp;editable IEP tracking sheets, you can efficiently document student progress while also easily interpreting the data to make instructional changes. These sheets allow you to:</p> <ul> <li>Track progress across multiple areas, including academic, social, and functional skills.</li> <li>Use probe data, event-by-event data, rubrics, work samples and more.</li> <li>Easily interpret your data regularly with graph-as-you-go data sheets.</li> </ul> <p>Because the data collection tools are editable, you can adapt them to the unique needs of each student and classroom. </p> <div class="wp-block-columns has-base-2-background-color has-background is-layout-flex wp-container-3 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex"> <div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow"> <figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/3653482?utm_source=acr-blog-&amp;utm_campaign=instructional-data" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/NSTRUCTIONAL-DATA-SHEETS-THUMBNAILS-September-15-2024-3653482-2-1024x1024.jpg" alt="Instructional Data Collection Sheets: 35 Variations of Data Sheets 8 Types of Data Collection Add Student Information PowerPoint &amp; Google Slides" class="wp-image-24173" srcset="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/NSTRUCTIONAL-DATA-SHEETS-THUMBNAILS-September-15-2024-3653482-2-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/NSTRUCTIONAL-DATA-SHEETS-THUMBNAILS-September-15-2024-3653482-2-300x300.jpg 300w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/NSTRUCTIONAL-DATA-SHEETS-THUMBNAILS-September-15-2024-3653482-2-150x150.jpg 150w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/NSTRUCTIONAL-DATA-SHEETS-THUMBNAILS-September-15-2024-3653482-2-768x768.jpg 768w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/NSTRUCTIONAL-DATA-SHEETS-THUMBNAILS-September-15-2024-3653482-2-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/NSTRUCTIONAL-DATA-SHEETS-THUMBNAILS-September-15-2024-3653482-2-600x600.jpg 600w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/NSTRUCTIONAL-DATA-SHEETS-THUMBNAILS-September-15-2024-3653482-2-100x100.jpg 100w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/NSTRUCTIONAL-DATA-SHEETS-THUMBNAILS-September-15-2024-3653482-2.jpg 2000w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" data-pin-media="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/NSTRUCTIONAL-DATA-SHEETS-THUMBNAILS-September-15-2024-3653482-2.jpg"></a></figure> </div> <div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow"> <p class="has-large-font-size">You can buy the instructional data collection sheets here or click any of the images in this post.</p> </div> </div> <p><strong>So let&rsquo;s look at the two forms of data collection that I use to initially set up a system of data collection.</strong></p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Are the Two Primary Data Collection Strategies?</h2> <p>When tracking progress for students with disabilities, two highly effective&nbsp;data collection strategies&nbsp;that I use to set up classrooms are&nbsp;<strong>naturalistic probe data</strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>trial-by-trial data</strong>. Each method has its benefits depending on the skill or behavior you&rsquo;re tracking, and these&nbsp;<strong>editable IEP data collection sheets</strong>&nbsp;make both strategies easy to implement.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/3653482?utm_source=acr-blog-&amp;utm_campaign=instructional-data" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/IEP-Data-Collection-Sheets-Easy-and-Effective-Guide11-1024x576.jpg" alt="NATURALISTIC / PROBE DATA SHEETS Take sample data during group activities for multiple students. Or you can use the individual version to take data for one student across a variety of activities. There are enough boxes on this sheet for 5 data points per skill. And you can track up to 10 students (or 10 activities if using the individual version) on each sheet. I use these to take weekly data on each student in an activity. These are similar to the free data sheet I&rsquo;ve had on my blog and there is a free video tutorial that shows how I use them here." class="wp-image-24170" srcset="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/IEP-Data-Collection-Sheets-Easy-and-Effective-Guide11-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/IEP-Data-Collection-Sheets-Easy-and-Effective-Guide11-300x169.jpg 300w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/IEP-Data-Collection-Sheets-Easy-and-Effective-Guide11-768x432.jpg 768w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/IEP-Data-Collection-Sheets-Easy-and-Effective-Guide11-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/IEP-Data-Collection-Sheets-Easy-and-Effective-Guide11-600x338.jpg 600w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/IEP-Data-Collection-Sheets-Easy-and-Effective-Guide11.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" data-pin-media="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/IEP-Data-Collection-Sheets-Easy-and-Effective-Guide11.jpg"></a></figure> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>1. Naturalistic Probe Data</strong></h3> <p>Naturalistic probe data is collected in a student&rsquo;s everyday environment, and I sometimes refer to it as sample data. This strategy is a great way to take data in real-life situations where skills are being used. Probes could be daily or weekly depending on the skill and the need. So, it&rsquo;s also terrific for tracking data on a group of students by sampling one student&rsquo;s data each day. Consequently, works well for monitoring progress on skills like social interactions, communication skills, or generalizing academic knowledge.</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Group / Probe Data Sheets</strong></h3> <p>With these&nbsp;IEP data collection sheets, you can:</p> <ul> <li>Set up easy-to-use templates to record when a student independently uses a skill or what prompting was provided.</li> <li>Create group data sheets to track specific skills in activities like morning meeting or recess using weekly samples using 1 data sheet.</li> <li>Collect multiple trials of the skills as <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF03391775" data-type="link" data-id="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF03391775" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recommended by data collection research </a>rather than just single or cold probes. This allows for better analysis of the data by having multiple points of data in each sample. </li> <li>The probe sheets each have 5 spots for data to be collected. This gives you more data to use to make decisions about students&rsquo; performance.</li> </ul> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/3653482?utm_source=acr-blog-&amp;utm_campaign=instructional-data" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="940" height="788" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/naturalistic-data-sheet-940-%C3%97-788-px.jpg" alt="Naturalistic instruction data collection sheet for tracking skills on multiple students during morning meeting--probe data or sample data" class="wp-image-24175" srcset="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/naturalistic-data-sheet-940-&times;-788-px.jpg 940w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/naturalistic-data-sheet-940-&times;-788-px-300x251.jpg 300w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/naturalistic-data-sheet-940-&times;-788-px-768x644.jpg 768w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/naturalistic-data-sheet-940-&times;-788-px-600x503.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px" data-pin-media="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/naturalistic-data-sheet-940-%C3%97-788-px.jpg"></a></figure> <p>By focusing on what the student can do naturally,&nbsp;<strong>naturalistic probe data</strong>&nbsp;helps you make informed decisions about their ability to apply skills in different environments&mdash;an essential part of any IEP.</p> <p><strong>Plus you can grab a free data sheet for taking group data probe data in our Resource Library.</strong></p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">2. Trial-by-Trial Editable Data Sheets&nbsp;</h3> <p>For more structured skills or behaviors,&nbsp;<strong>trial-by-trial data</strong>&nbsp;is key. This method involves recording the student&rsquo;s response during each instructional trial. It&rsquo;s particularly useful for discrete skills that are taught in a step-by-step manner, such as academic tasks or behavior replacement strategies.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/3653482?utm_source=acr-blog-&amp;utm_campaign=instructional-data" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/IEP-Data-Collection-Sheets-Easy-and-Effective-Guide7-1024x576.jpg" alt="GRAPH-AS-YOU-GO IEP &amp; SKILL TRACKING These sheets are designed for either breaking a skill down into sequential steps or tracking objectives from IEP goals. So whether you are using&nbsp;<strong>shaping</strong>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<strong>chaining strategies</strong>, these data sheets will show your students&rsquo; progress across the steps of the skill. &nbsp; And with as you graph directly on the data sheet, it&rsquo;s easy to track students&rsquo; progress and&nbsp;<strong>analyze the data</strong>.</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Work Product Labels</h3> <p>One of my go-to tools in data collection is work product, sometimes called permanent product. &nbsp;Work product is the easiest way to take data because you rely on the student&rsquo;s work to tell the story. &nbsp; No graphing, no analyzing needed. &nbsp; However, it&rsquo;s important that you have critical information like what kind of prompting was provided, what type of situation were you in, etc. &nbsp; And that&rsquo;s where work product labels come in. &nbsp;</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/3653482?utm_source=acr-blog-&amp;utm_campaign=instructional-data" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img Summer Resources That Will Help You Survive the End of the Year https://autismclassroomresources.com/summer-resources-that-will-help-you-survive-the-end-of-the-year/ Autism Classroom Resources urn:uuid:c2880955-e781-38fe-55dd-888db497f7e9 Wed, 01 May 2024 17:08:34 +0000 <p>Looking for summer resources for ESY? This post has them!</p> <p>As many of you know, I like to make resources set up by seasons. &nbsp;Part of this is because many of the students I know we all work with need to use the same resources for 2 to 3 months before we change it up on them. &nbsp; And seasons just give us a good dividing point to change up many functional skills, like places we go, what we wear, etc.</p> <p>So, I thought I would start to do some seasonal rounds ups of activities and products from the blog and my store for easy reference. I&rsquo;ll include free activities and products from my store that can help you. &nbsp;</p> <p>And I thought I would start with summer resources. &nbsp;Let&rsquo;s face it, the end of the year &nbsp;can be tough and we need all the fun and engaging resources we can get to keep our students engaged. &nbsp; And thinking about summer can keep us all motivated to get through the day.</p> set that focus on matching letters, matching upper to lowercase letters, filling in sequences of letters and matching beginning letters to pictures (e.g., c to a cat). &nbsp;</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">RED, WHITE &amp; TWO</h3> <p> These summer resources are the math counterpart to the Sunny days folders. &nbsp; There are 4 folders with matching numerals, matching sets to numbers, matching colors, and matching numbers to number words. &nbsp; Most of these can be split into 2 simpler file folders to get more variation as well. </p> <div class="wp-block-image"> <figure I&rsquo;ve got 3 types of telling time practice activities that are perfect for task box independent work systems and a free one you can download and try.</p> <p>As we all know, when we are teaching in a consistent, systematic manner, we need to make sure that our students are learning with explicit instruction, practicing what they have learned, and generalizing their skills. Task boxes in independent work systems make a great way to get that type of practice on skills they have mastered during instruction. They also can be used to generalize skills to new materials.</p> <p>These tasks lend themselves well to independent work stations and are easy to use with little to no real prep work on your part. Plus they are easy to check to see that the students are doing them correctly. So, let&rsquo;s get started!</p> <p><strong><em>**Click on any of the pictures to check out the full bundle-which lists the individual products shown in the post!**</em></strong></p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">File Folder Task Boxes for Telling Time Practice</h2> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/9516976?utm_source=acr-blog-time-iw&amp;utm_campaign=time-toolkit" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Task-Box-Activities-Perfect-for-Telling-Time-Practice-Blog-Post-4-1024x576.jpg" alt="Task Box Activities Perfect for Telling Time Practice Blog Post - File Folders or binders are great for matching analog and digital time. these include whole hour up to 5-minute matching tasks in the budle" class="wp-image-23887" srcset="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Task-Box-Activities-Perfect-for-Telling-Time-Practice-Blog-Post-4-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Task-Box-Activities-Perfect-for-Telling-Time-Practice-Blog-Post-4-300x169.jpg 300w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Task-Box-Activities-Perfect-for-Telling-Time-Practice-Blog-Post-4-768x432.jpg 768w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Task-Box-Activities-Perfect-for-Telling-Time-Practice-Blog-Post-4-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Task-Box-Activities-Perfect-for-Telling-Time-Practice-Blog-Post-4-600x338.jpg 600w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Task-Box-Activities-Perfect-for-Telling-Time-Practice-Blog-Post-4.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" data-pin-media="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Task-Box-Activities-Perfect-for-Telling-Time-Practice-Blog-Post-4.jpg"></a></figure> <p>As we all probably know, file folder activities make great task boxes for independent stations. They meet <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/independent-work-tasks/" data-type="post" data-id="7726">all the requirements of evidence-based independent work systems</a> in that the amount of work is clear, the task itself is typically clear, and (with Velcro) they will stay together when put in the finished area. This allows you to check it, as well as helping the student know the task is complete and not repeat it.</p> <p>These file folders include both analog and digital clocks, since students need to practice using both. They are also scaffolded so that you can choose the matching tasks fitting the skills that your students have mastered. </p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/9516976?utm_source=acr-blog-time-iw&amp;utm_campaign=time-toolkit" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Practicing-Telling-Time-Task-Boxes-Time-Matching-Tasks-1024x576.jpg" alt="Time Matching Tasks: Matching analog and analog and digital to digital clocksw, matching time to analog clocks, matching time to digital clocks. 97 pages of matching tasks plus labels already differentiated by hour, half hour, quarter hour and 5-minute increments [picture of file folders and biner with clocks and watches showing digital and analog time" class="wp-image-23891" srcset="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Practicing-Telling-Time-Task-Boxes-Time-Matching-Tasks-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Practicing-Telling-Time-Task-Boxes-Time-Matching-Tasks-300x169.jpg 300w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Practicing-Telling-Time-Task-Boxes-Time-Matching-Tasks-768x432.jpg 768w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Practicing-Telling-Time-Task-Boxes-Time-Matching-Tasks-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Practicing-Telling-Time-Task-Boxes-Time-Matching-Tasks-600x338.jpg 600w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Practicing-Telling-Time-Task-Boxes-Time-Matching-Tasks.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" data-pin-media="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Practicing-Telling-Time-Task-Boxes-Time-Matching-Tasks.jpg"></a></figure> <p>They are broken down into either file folders or binder pages that match either analog or digital clocks or watches to identical clocks with:</p> <ul> <li>whole hours to whole hours</li> <li>half hours to half hours</li> <li>quarter hours alone</li> <li>quarter hours, whole and half hours</li> <li>clocks to 5-minute times</li> </ul> <p>Students just starting to learn time can start with matching clocks to clocks for whole hours. And more advanced students can matching more specific times up to 5 minutes. </p> <p>And, if you aren&rsquo;t a fan of storing file folders, laminate the individual pages and store them in a binder.</p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Telling Time Practice Task Cards</h2> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/9516976?utm_source=acr-blog-time-iw&amp;utm_campaign=time-toolkit" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Task-Box-Activities-Perfect-for-Telling-Time-Practice-Blog-Post-3-1024x576.jpg" alt="I love Task Cards for Telling Time Practice because: 1. you can mix them up easily so they don't get memorized; 2. you can use different response tools like pens or bingo markers. One of the best is that they are really easy to prep. Cut them, laminate them, and use dry erase markers or clothespins to select the answers and they can last forever.</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Work With Student Who Memorize Tasks?</h3> <p>No problem with task cards because you can mix them up each time. This keeps the task fresh and keeps students from just memorizing the answers in order. </p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Great for Differentiating</h3> <p>I also love task cards because they are easy to differentiate for different students. This set is scaffolded similarly to the file folders above with different times up to 5 minutes, starting at identifying times for hour times. </p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/9516976?utm_source=acr-blog-time-iw&amp;utm_campaign=time-toolkit" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Telling-time-practice-with-time-task-cards-1024x576.jpg" alt="Telling Time Practice with Task Cards: 218 task cards to identify times up to 5 minutes, printable pages of task cards, Google Slides, Easel version (on TpT), Answer Key, Answer sheet. I used masking tape and a permanent marker because it was fast. You could use a label maker or use Velcro cards with different measurements to make it easy to change up the requirements regularly.</p> <p>Students then have to use the cups and/ or the spoons to measure the amounts into the designated container and close the container.<a href="http://tutorial" target="_blank"> </a><a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/podcasts/what-is-an-independent-work-system-really/" data-type="podcasts" data-id="19650">It goes into the finished area closed (here&rsquo;s why).</a> One of the primary reasons in this particular task is that you can check the student&rsquo;s work easily when resetting the task by using the same measuring implement (i.e., spoon or cup) to put the rice or the beans back into the large container.</p> <p>Finally, you may want to put a large sheet or some type of cover on the floor to catch the fallen rice or beans. Sometimes we fall back on presenting time materials more than the explicit instruction our students benefit from most.</p> <p>Teaching telling time can be complex, though, in that we tell time in different ways: analog and digital. We use different time telling tools (e.g., watches and clocks). And some students will learn to estimate the time, learning the skill to the quarter hour for instance. While others will master telling time to the exact minute.</p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Importance of Telling Time as a Life Skill</h2> <p>When we think about life skills, we often think about daily living skills, money skills, and teaching telling time. These are functional skills that all our students need regardless of their level of academic performance.</p> <p>Telling time is a critical life skill because it impacts so many areas of our lives. Knowing how to tell time helps our students to know or understand</p> <ul> <li>time expectations are for a task, helping them to self-regulate and complete their work</li> <li>when they get to do something they want, helping them to know how long they have to wait for something</li> <li>how to be on time for class, for work, for appointments etc.</li> <li>how to schedule appointments effectively given a schedule</li> <li>shift from an activity schedule to a time-based routine or schedule</li> <li>and eventually, it can lead to learning time management.</li> </ul> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Teaching Analog AND Digital Time is Important</h2> <p>Many times it feels easy to fall back on adapted devices for students to be able to tell time. Certainly digital watches are available in abundance now and often easier for telling time than an analog clock. However, I&rsquo;ve been in a number of situations where my digital watch battery died (especially my smart watch) and all I had to tell time was an analog clock on the wall, in the airport or in a classroom. Knowing how to read the analog clock became an important skill at that point.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="810" height="450" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Pictures-How-to-Effectively-and-Efficiently-Teach-Telling-Time-23605.jpg" alt="How to Effectively and Efficiently Teach Telling Time [picture of teaching materials]" class="wp-image-23620" srcset="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Pictures-How-to-Effectively-and-Efficiently-Teach-Telling-Time-23605.jpg 810w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Pictures-How-to-Effectively-and-Efficiently-Teach-Telling-Time-23605-300x167.jpg 300w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Pictures-How-to-Effectively-and-Efficiently-Teach-Telling-Time-23605-768x427.jpg 768w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Pictures-How-to-Effectively-and-Efficiently-Teach-Telling-Time-23605-600x333.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px" data-pin-media="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Pictures-How-to-Effectively-and-Efficiently-Teach-Telling-Time-23605.jpg"></figure> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Barriers to Teaching Time Telling in Special Education</h2> <p>Telling time is one of those teaching topics that you can often find lots of practice materials, but sometimes they just aren&rsquo;t meant for YOUR students. This is particularly true if you work with older students, so the second and third-grade time materials really don&rsquo;t feel right for them, do you agree?</p> <p>In addition, our students don&rsquo;t learn telling time in the set period of time that typical students usually do. It&rsquo;s not a unit you can teach for a few weeks and expect true mastery. Typically students in life skills classrooms need more explicit instruction and more practice with different types of materials to truly acquire and master the needed skills.</p> <p>And that typically means they need more time and more materials to effectively learn how to tell time.</p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Start With Explicit Instruction: Using Task Analysis and Data to Teach Telling Time</h2> <p>Sometimes it&rsquo;s easy to skip over the step of explicitly teaching how to tell time and skip directly to file folders and worksheets. And I&rsquo;ll talk about the importance of those types of materials in the next section. But, teaching the mechanics of telling time is critical.</p> <p>To do this, I use task analyses with gradually increasing steps of difficulty. In the <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Telling-Time-to-the-Hour-Through-Minutes-Analog-Digital-Instruction-Programs-10472931?utm_source=acr-blog-reading-resources&amp;utm_campaign=tell-time-instruction" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Telling Time to the Hour Through Minutes: Analog &amp; Digital Instruction Programs</a>, I&rsquo;ve included both the task analyses and graph-as-you-go instructional data sheets with the steps already laid out for teaching the different skills.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Post-Telling-Time-Bundle-23605-2-1024x576.jpg" alt="Graph as you go data with teaching steps. Then you teach them sequentially. I&rsquo;ve written more about <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/what-you-need-to-know-about-task-analysis-and-why-you-should-use-it/" data-type="post" data-id="4152">task analyses here</a> as well as <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/shaping-5-tips-you-need-to-know-to-use-it-effectively/" data-type="post" data-id="4232">shaping</a> and <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/a-teaching-strategy-that-can-save-you-time-chaining/" data-type="post" data-id="4194">chaining</a> that are two strategies commonly used to teach with them.</p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Skills Involved in Learning Telling Time</h2> <p>By teaching students explicitly the 12 skills included in the instructional toolkit, they learn to tell:</p> <ul> <li>analog time to the hour and half hour</li> <li>analog time to the quarter hour</li> <li>analog time to 5 minutes</li> <li>analog time to the minute</li> <li>digital time to the hour and half hour</li> <li>digital time to the quarter hour</li> <li>digital time to 5 minutes</li> <li>digital time to the minute</li> </ul> <p>They also learn to set a clock to:</p> <ul> <li>the hour and half hour</li> <li>the quarter hour</li> <li>5-minutes</li> <li>the minute</li> </ul> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Differentiating Instruction When Teaching Time Telling</h2> <p>Some students will learn well with larger steps, while others will need steps broken down into smaller ones. This is the importance of differentiation, as you know. And because most of us have a pretty varied case load, being able to adapt materials is really critical in instruction of any concept.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Post-Telling-Time-Bundle-23605-7-1024x576.jpg" alt="A year of scafoolded worksheets to teach telling time, including 10 whole hour only sheets, 20 half and whole hour sheets, 10 quarter hour only, 20 quarter mixed with previous, 30 5-minutes only, 40 5 minutes mixed with previous, 50 of to the minute only and 50 of all the above times mixed" class="wp-image-23619" srcset="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Post-Telling-Time-Bundle-23605-7-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Post-Telling-Time-Bundle-23605-7-300x169.jpg 300w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Post-Telling-Time-Bundle-23605-7-768x432.jpg 768w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Post-Telling-Time-Bundle-23605-7-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Post-Telling-Time-Bundle-23605-7-600x338.jpg 600w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Post-Telling-Time-Bundle-23605-7.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" data-pin-media="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Post-Telling-Time-Bundle-23605-7.jpg"></figure> <p>For instance, the Telling Time Toolkit pictured above is designed with 2 overarching programs that work well for students who progress quickly through steps with less practice. These programs include the 12 skills outlined above, each broken down into learning segments of time (e.g., telling time time to the hour, then telling time to the half hour, then telling time when set to each randomly).</p> <p>However, for students who learn faster with less repetition, there are overarching programs that include each of those 12 skills as an individual teaching step, rather than a program of its own. If I&rsquo;m not sure how to differentiate instruction for students, I typically start with these programs. But if my graph-as-you-go data isn&rsquo;t showing that the student is making progress, then the steps are likely too big. Then it makes sense to drop down to the more detailed <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/podcasts/importance-of-teaching-programs/" data-type="podcasts" data-id="19854">teaching programs.</a></p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Use a Variety of Materials to Teach Telling Time</h2> <p>Finally, once students acquire the skill in instruction, we need to generalize it throughout their day. One way we can do that is by using a wide variety of materials, like <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/9516665?utm_source=acr-blog-reading-resources&amp;utm_campaign=time-matching-bundle" target="_blank" rel="noopener">file folders</a>, <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Telling-Time-Worksheets-to-the-Minute-for-Special-Education-for-the-Whole-Year-10086994?utm_source=acr-blog-reading-resources&amp;utm_campaign=time-worksheets" target="_blank" rel="noopener">worksheets</a>, and <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Special-Education-Task-Boxes-for-Telling-Time-Practice-to-5-Minutes-Bundle-9929528?utm_source=acr-blog-reading-resources&amp;utm_campaign=telling-time-task-cards-bundle" target="_blank" rel="noopener">task cards</a>.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Post-Telling-Time-Bundle-23605-4-1024x576.jpg" alt="Teaching telling time with lots o practice materials like [pictured] worksheets, task cards and matching file folders" class="wp-image-23618" srcset="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Post-Telling-Time-Bundle-23605-4-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Post-Telling-Time-Bundle-23605-4-300x169.jpg 300w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Post-Telling-Time-Bundle-23605-4-768x432.jpg 768w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Post-Telling-Time-Bundle-23605-4-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Post-Telling-Time-Bundle-23605-4-600x338.jpg 600w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Post-Telling-Time-Bundle-23605-4.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" data-pin-media="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Blog-Post-Telling-Time-Bundle-23605-4.jpg"></figure> <p>In addition to generalize when we teach telling time, we can:</p> <ul> <li>Put times on the students&rsquo; schedules so they begin to connect activities to time</li> <li>Highlight times when reviewing the schedule for the day. I choose times that I know will be specific. For instance, we might not transition between centers exactly on time. But chances are good we show up to specials, recess and lunch in a timely manner.</li> <li>Discuss time in stories for when activities take place during literacy and morning meeting.</li> <li>Have students check the time and report it before doing helper jobs or write the time to sign in for a favorite activity. (This is also one of my fun ways to get them started on signing into job sites.)</li> </ul> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Teach Telling Time with the Comprehensive Instructional and Practice Bundle</h2> <p>As I noted above, I&rsquo;ve created the <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Telling-Time-to-the-Hour-Through-Minutes-Analog-Digital-Instruction-Programs-10472931?utm_source=acr-blog-reading-resources&amp;utm_campaign=tell-time-instruction" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Telling Time to the Hour Through Minutes: Analog &amp; Digital Instruction Programs</a> specifically to help teachers with ready-made task analyses and data sheets. Sometimes just keeping students engaged throughout the group time is the first challenge. But even when you get them engaged, how do you assure that they are learning? </p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Bother with Whole Group Instruction?</h2> <p>Let&rsquo;s start with WHY we should be doing whole group instruction. As a behavior analyst, I have met many teachers and behavior professionals who think that, particularly for students with autism, that we shouldn&rsquo;t focus much on whole group (or sometimes even small group) instruction. And, for a few students we probably do want to spend time focusing in more individualized instruction at first. </p> <p>But, group instruction is key to helping our students move toward learning in more environments. It expands their learning opportunities. And it moves them toward more mainstream and inclusive options. I talked more <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/podcasts/how-do-we-get-morning-meeting-right-in-special-ed/" data-type="podcasts" data-id="19297">in Episode 104 of the podcast about how and why group instruction so essential for our students.</a> And in <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/podcasts/skills-to-target-during-morning-meeting-for-younger-older-students/" data-type="podcasts" data-id="19307">Episode 105 I talked about the types of skills we can develop using whole group instruction.</a></p> <p>This post has 5 whole group instruction strategies you can use to both keep students engaged and address specific instructional goals. Because let&rsquo;s face it&hellip;.if your students aren&rsquo;t engaged, they aren&rsquo;t learning.</p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Three Stages of Instruction</h2> <p>In <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/podcasts/skills-to-target-during-morning-meeting-for-younger-older-students/" data-type="link" data-id="https://autismclassroomresources.com/podcasts/skills-to-target-during-morning-meeting-for-younger-older-students/">episode 105 I talked about the 3 phases of any type of instruction that are critical to address for learnings with autism: explicit, generalization, and maintenance.</a> All 3 of these stages are important in how we put our instruction plans together. </p> <p>For many of our students, explicit instruction is the concentrated, highly individualized instruction the teacher provides in small groups or sometimes 1-1 . This is where we introduce concepts and practice them with fewer distractions.</p> <p><a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/fun-ways-to-teach-and-generalize/" data-type="post" data-id="779">Generalization is when we are expanding that learning to new people, materials and environments. </a>This the a great phase for group learning for students to take skills they learned in small group and expand it to a larger context. They can also be really helpful in teaching maintenance, where we are working on the student continuing to practice and use the skill. Both maintenance and generalization are often areas where students with ASD struggle, so the opportunity to expand them to more inclusive situations is key.</p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Whole Group Instructional Strategies</h2> <p>As I talk about the different strategies for whole group instruction, it&rsquo;s important to remember that it doesn&rsquo;t all have to be teacher-led. In addition, while I&rsquo;ll be describing them as a behavior analyst, we need to recognize that these strategies often overlap between disciplines but might have different names. </p> <p>I specifically remember watching a video once of <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/autumn-activities-in-an-autism-classroom-and-a-freebie/" data-type="post" data-id="4252">Verbal Behavior</a> Naturalistic Instruction strategy examples once with a speech pathologist friend. I commented on what a great example it was of naturalistic instruction. She responded that it looked like good incidental teaching and good speech therapy. </p> <p>Always remember that it&rsquo;s the elements of the instruction, not their &ldquo;name&rdquo; that is the critical element in its effectiveness. And we need to strive as an educational community to recognize the similarities and collaborate.</p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Whole Group Instructional Strategy #1: Discrete Trials</h2> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="595" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-Discrete-trials-1024x595.jpg" alt="Whole Group Instruction Strategies Blog Post #1 Discrete trials" class="wp-image-23386" srcset="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-Discrete-trials-1024x595.jpg 1024w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-Discrete-trials-300x174.jpg 300w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-Discrete-trials-768x447.jpg 768w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-Discrete-trials-600x349.jpg 600w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-Discrete-trials.jpg 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" data-pin-media="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-Discrete-trials.jpg"></figure> <p>Discrete trials are traditionally a form of explicit instruction. While they are often provided 1-1 or in small groups, there is research that indicates they can be effective as in whole group instruction as well. </p> <p>I won&rsquo;t go into a lot of detail about how to provide discrete trials, because I&rsquo;ve done that with an <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/what-are-discrete-trials/" data-type="post" data-id="663">overview blog post on trials here</a> and <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/podcasts/discrete-trial-teaching/" data-type="podcasts" data-id="23130">talked about them in this podcast as well.</a></p> <p>It&rsquo;s critical to recognize as well that discrete trials do not always have to be drills and they should ALWAYS be conducted using positive reinforcement and not aversives. Our understanding and use of trials has expanded significantly over the last 30 years and we need to make sure we are using them when they are useful and fit the characteristics of the individual. </p> <p>One of the myths about discrete trials is that they should always be used as 1-1. Trials are a teaching strategy&ndash;they aren&rsquo;t an instructional program. They are merely a tool we use for instruction. <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/does-dtt-have-to-be-1-1-3-ways-to-provide-discrete-trials-in-a-group/" data-type="post" data-id="3750">And I talk about the research on the effectiveness of using them in groups in this post.</a></p> <p>Some ways you might use them in group instruction include </p> <ul> <li>giving a direction to one student at a time and having the time between trials be a bit longer</li> <li>using response cards (see below) so that all the students are completing the same trial at the same time</li> <li>having 1 student complete the trial instruction in one way while others complete it in different forms. For example have one student find the date on the calendar on the board, other students can find it on a ring of numbers. Each can be reinforced individually based on their responses.</li> </ul> <p>Typically discrete trials can also be used with some of the other strategies I&rsquo;ll talk about as well.</p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Whole Group Instruction Strategy # 2 Prompting</h2> <p>We use prompting all the time in combination with other strategies in our instruction. Prompting is what allows us to help the students gets the right answer so they get reinforced. But obviously, as always, <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/why-prompts-are-like-training-wheels/" data-type="post" data-id="649">fading out those prompts </a>is as critical in whole group instruction than in any other instruction.</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="595" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-prompting-1024x595.jpg" alt="Whole Group Instruction Strategies Blog Post #2 prompting" class="wp-image-23388" srcset="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-prompting-1024x595.jpg 1024w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-prompting-300x174.jpg 300w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-prompting-768x447.jpg 768w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-prompting-600x349.jpg 600w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-prompting.jpg 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" data-pin-media="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-prompting.jpg"></figure> <p>In whole group instruction, I highly recommend when possible to use prompting from behind the student. It&rsquo;s easier to fade out the prompting than when it&rsquo;s part of the group instruction. </p> <p>However, keep in mind that systematic use of fading procedures like <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/pros-and-cons-of-least-to-most-promp/" data-type="post" data-id="638">least-to-most</a> or <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/5-things-you-need-to-know-about-time/" data-type="post" data-id="635">time delay</a> are important here so the student doesn&rsquo;t begin to turn around to attend to the prompter. You want the student to remain focused on the group instructor and fade out the assistance. This really <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/special-education-morning-meeting/" data-type="post" data-id="10752">highlights the need for good visual supports by the group leader</a> as well.</p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">#3 Incidental Teaching and Pivotal Response Training</h2> <p>Both of these strategies are ABA forms of <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/podcasts/naturalistic-developmental-behavioral-interventions/" data-type="podcasts" data-id="23172">Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions and I talk about them more in this episode of the podcast.</a> I also have <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/planning-naturalistic-instruction-across-the-classroom-with-free-downloads/" data-type="post" data-id="4504">ideas for using naturalistic instruction morning meeting in this post.</a> </p> <p>You can also get more details and <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/incidental-teaching-an-introduction/" data-type="post" data-id="4280">a video tutorial on incidental teaching</a> in this post. I hold out an instrument, and I wait for the student to ask me for it. It&rsquo;s in a closed container. I know the student really likes the Jingle Bells. </p> <p>I know they like to play them (possible reinforcer), so I&rsquo;ve put the bells in a container they can&rsquo;t open (situational sabotage). Then, I&rsquo;m waiting for them to tell me that they want it in some way. When they do that, they get the bells (the reinforcer).&nbsp; In PRT I would repeat this several times giving multiple opportunities.</p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">#4 Cloze Techniques for Whole Group Instruction</h2> <p>Cloze techniques are a fun one that can be used getting students to verbally fill in familiar statements or use an AAC device like a simple switch to voice the routine, repetitive phrase in a sentence. For instance, when singing Hickory Dickory, you might try to get the students to complete the phrase. </p> <p>So you would sing &ldquo;Hickory Dickory Dock&rdquo; and pause to see if the students will fill in &ldquo;the mouse ran up the clock.&rdquo; You&rsquo;re trying to get the end of that phrase. </p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="595" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-cloze-technique-1024x595.jpg" alt='Whole Group Instruction Strategies Blog Post #4 cloze technique. "Visual supports for this strategy--Jack and Jill Went up the hill to fetch a paiol of ____?"' class="wp-image-23385" srcset="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-cloze-technique-1024x595.jpg 1024w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-cloze-technique-300x174.jpg 300w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-cloze-technique-768x447.jpg 768w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-cloze-technique-600x349.jpg 600w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-cloze-technique.jpg 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" data-pin-media="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-cloze-technique.jpg"><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">This is a set of staff cueing cards for cloze technique in my Nursery Rhymes (Hickory Dickory Dock) toolkit.</figcaption></figure> <p>Another example: &#9835; The itsy bitsy spider went up the water&hellip; &#9835; and then you&rsquo;re leaving a blank so that you get them to continue those common things, in this case &ldquo;spout&rdquo;. </p> <p>&#9835; Ring-around the rosie, all fall&hellip; &#9835; and we&rsquo;re waiting for some kind of response. It might be a verbal response, it might be a gesture response but we&rsquo;re giving them that close opportunity to close out that loop of language with a familiar something that they&rsquo;re hearing.</p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">#5 Response Cards</h2> <p>Finally, one of my favorite ways for students to respond is to use <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/response-cards-increasing-studen/" data-type="post" data-id="870">response cards</a>. Response cards are when students have a card that they write or find their answer and hold it up for the teacher to see. </p> <p>Advantages of Response Cards Include:</p> <ul> <li>Every student answers every time, so there are more opportunities for each student to practice each question/answer. This means that every student is getting more learning opportunities for reinforcement.</li> <li>Since every student answers every question, there is less waiting time and student engagement is increased. </li> <li>Because there is less waiting, or down time, students&rsquo; <a href="https://autismclassroomresources.com/podcasts/student-engagement-and-why-its-so-important/" data-type="podcasts" data-id="20602">behavior is often improved because they are more engaged.</a></li> <li>And finally, the teacher can scan the responses and see which students are getting answers right and which are struggling. This is harder to do with choral responding in which every student responds verbally.</li> </ul> <p>So you can use response cards that are dry erase cards or boards for students to write the answer on. You can have multiple choice options where they hold up a letter. Use a low-tech option where you do yes/no with thumbs up and down. Or use a higher tech option using something like <a href="https://kahoot.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kahoot</a>. </p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="595" src="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-response-cards-1024x595.jpg" alt="Whole Group Instruction Strategies Blog Post #5 response cards - examples of response cards for waht is the temperature, days of the week (free), how I came to school and Little Miss Muffett" class="wp-image-23389" srcset="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-response-cards-1024x595.jpg 1024w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-response-cards-300x174.jpg 300w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-response-cards-768x447.jpg 768w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-response-cards-600x349.jpg 600w, https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-response-cards.jpg 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" data-pin-media="https://autismclassroomresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Whole-Group-Instruction-Strategies-Blog-Post-23360-response-cards.jpg"></figure> <p>I love to use response cards in morning meeting or circle time as well as small group instruction. You can <strong>grab a free days of the week response card in the free resource library below</strong>. Students circle or mark with a clothespin which day of the week it is and hold it up for the teacher to see. </p> <p>I&rsquo;ve done similar things with calendars. <strong>We also have other response cards in our morning meeting / circle time starter kits that you&rsquo;ll find at the bottom of the page.</strong></p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Conclusion</h2> <p>So those are 5 evidence-based strategies that you can use for effective whole group instruction.
