3 Southern California residents charged in scams to launder $80M in victim funds

LOS ANGELES — Three Southern California residents are among four defendants named in a seven-count indictment charging them with participating in a scheme to launder the proceeds of cryptocurrency investment scams and other fraudulent schemes involving millions of dollars in victim funds, officials announced Thursday.

Two of the defendants — Lu Zhang, 36, of Alhambra, and Justin Walker, 31, of Cypress — were arrested Tuesday. The other two defendants — Joseph Wong, 32, Rosemead, and Hailong Zhu, 40, Naperville, Illinois — are currently being sought by federal authorities, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

The indictment filed in Los Angeles federal court charges the defendants with conspiracy to commit money laundering, concealment money laundering and international money laundering.

Zhang, Walker, Wong and Zhu allegedly conspired to open shell companies and bank accounts to launder victim proceeds of cryptocurrency investment scams — also known as “pig butchering” — and other fraudulent schemes. They allegedly transferred the funds involved in the fraud schemes to domestic and international financial institutions.

The alleged overall fraud scheme in the related pig-butchering syndicate involved at least 284 transactions and resulted in more than $80 million in victim losses. More than $20 million in victim funds were directly deposited into bank accounts associated with the defendants, the indictment alleges.

According to court documents, pig butchering fraud schemes — a term derived from a foreign-language phrase used to describe the crimes — consist of scammers encountering victims on dating services or social media, or through unsolicited messages or calls, often masquerading as a wrong number.

Scammers initiate relationships with victims and slowly gain their trust, eventually introducing the idea of making a business investment using cryptocurrency.

Victims are then directed to other members of the scheme operating fraudulent cryptocurrency investment platforms and applications, where victims are persuaded to make financial investments. Once funds are sent to scammer-controlled accounts, the investment platform often falsely shows significant gains on the purported investment, and the victims are thus induced to make additional investments. Ultimately, the victims are unable to withdraw or recover their money, often resulting in significant losses for the victims, according to the DOJ.

After their arrests, Zhang and Walker appeared Wednesday in court, where they both entered not guilty pleas. Zhang was ordered detained, and Walker was ordered released on bond. A trial was scheduled for Feb. 6 in downtown Los Angeles.

Each of the charges for conspiracy to commit money laundering, concealment money laundering, and international money laundering carry a possible sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison, prosecutors noted.

Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day and commemorated the end of fighting in 1918 on the Western Front in Europe between the Allies and Germany.

The Armistice of Compiègne was signed earlier in the morning but many people remember from a history lesson that “at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month” the armistice went into effect and more or less ended World War I.

Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to honor all veterans for their service.

While Veterans Day honors all who have served in the military, Memorial Day in May is the time to remember those who died during military service.

Since this year Veterans Day falls on a Saturday, some celebrations are held on Nov. 10, the federal holiday observed.

Here is a sampling of Veterans Day events Friday through Sunday in Los Angeles County. The list is by time on each day.

Nov. 10

Veterans Memorial Park – Granada Hills: The opening of a time capsule that was buried in 1972 by members of the Granada Hill-Billies 4-H Club, 11 a.m. Nov. 11. The time capsule was placed at a pocket park memorial, designed and built by the 4-H Club members, to honor Granada Hills residents who had served in the armed forces during the Vietnam War and who died there. Second annual Gene LeBell Memorial Ride is packed with stunt artists who honor him

If you watch TV or go to movies, you have seen most of the people who turned up in a parking lot in Calabasas early on Saturday, Oct. 14. You might not recognize them, but you’ve seen them. They are the men and women falling from buildings, driving fast cars, taking a bullet and getting punched in the face.

Stuntmen, stuntwomen and friends came to the parking lot of Stunts Unlimited on their motorcycles to honor a late friend and an icon in the stunt community, at the second annual Gene LeBell Memorial Ride.

LeBell, who passed away at home on Aug. 9, 2022 at 89, left a lasting impression on those lucky to have met him. Once called the “Toughest Man Alive,” he forged a legacy in both the stunt and martial arts worlds.

In the 1960s, LeBell began acting and doing stunts. On the set of “The Green Hornet,” he struck up a friendship with martial arts icon Bruce Lee. Lee and LeBell had a rocky start after LeBell hoisted Lee on his back in a fireman’s carry without Lee’s cooperation. Eventually LeBell put Lee down and they became friends.

Lebell is so admired that it has been rumored that Brad Pitt’s character as stuntman Cliff Booth in the 2019 Quentin Tarantino film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which included a memorable sequence with Lee, was an homage to LeBell.

LeBell appeared in more than 1,000 films, shows and commercials. He was presented with the prestigious Taurus Lifetime Achievement Award on May 13, 2017, for his outstanding contribution to the world of action feature films.

LeBell was a member of the elite Stunts Unlimited organization, whose members are some of Hollywood’s top A-list stunt performers. An empty chair with his name emblazoned on it still sits at their office table.

“There’s always going to be a chair. He was a member of our group, and there’s no other Gene, so he will always have a chair in our office that nobody can fill,” said Chris O’Hara, president of Stunts Unlimited.

31 stores in California on Rite Aid closure list

Rite Aid has marked 31 stores in California for closure in its restructuring plan, which was filed Monday, Oct. 16 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey.

The chain, which previously said it might close 500 stores, wrote that at least 154 stores would close.

The troubled retail pharmacy chain is facing slumping sales and several opioid-related lawsuits. To make ends meet, the company is looking to reduce its debt while resolving “litigation claims in an equitable manner,” Rite Aid reps said Sunday.

At least 10 stores will close across Los Angeles County. Another six will shutter in Orange County and just two in the Inland Empire. Only one, a store on South Archibald Avenue in Ontario appears to have closed already.

“Many of the stores on this list have already closed and received ample notice of the closure, while some will close in the coming weeks,” Rite Aid said via email Tuesday.

The 60-year-old Rite Aid operates 2,100 stores in the U.S., mostly in coastal states, and has posted annual losses for several years. The company reported that its revenue fell to $5.7 billion in the fiscal quarter that ended June 3, down from $6.0 billion a year earlier, logging a net loss of $306.7 million.

National Merit 2024: LA County scholarship semifinalists announced

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced on Wednesday, Sept. 13, its 2024 list of semifinalist high school students who will now compete for a share of about 7,140 scholarships worth almost $28 million. Winners will be announced nationally between April and July next year. This is the 69th annual competition.

High school juniors, 11th graders, in the United States entered the academic competition by taking the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. More than 1.3 million juniors, in about 21,000 high schools, entered the competition by taking the qualifying test.

The highest-scoring students in each state represent the pool of semifinalists who, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, represent less than 1% of United States high school seniors.

The next step for a semifinalist to become a finalist is to complete the required application that includes their SAT or ACT scores, an essay and a letter of recommendation by a high school official.

Finalists are then chosen on the basis of academic record, their participation in community and school activities, how they have demonstrated leadership ability, employment, awards and honors received.

From a group of about 16,000 semifinalists, an expected 15,000 advance to finalists. Students are notified in February 2024 if they are finalists and about half of those win a scholarship from three categories.

The National Merit Scholarship winners, chosen on the basis of accomplishments, skills and potential for college success, are selected from the February finalists group. Winners are notified, on a rolling basis, in 2024 from April to July.

The 2024 scholarship winners join the nearly 375,000 past winners who have earned the title of Merit Scholar.

Brandon Tsay was never one for the spotlight. In fact, he preferred to shine it on others.

Talk to those closest to him and they’ll tell you he was the guy behind the scenes — the deejay curating the music. The one making sure the lighting was just right for the ballroom dancers at his family’s Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio.

And then one night, on a festive Lunar New Year’s eve in a San Gabriel Valley town celebrating its robust Asian American culture, everything changed.

In a story for the ages, now told from local city councils to the White House, and from the halls of Congress to the world, it was the 26-year-old, soft-spoken man who wrested a semi-automatic weapon from an intruder who just minutes earlier had gunned down 11 people at a Monterey Park ballroom dance floor.

The black-and-white security camera images remain etched into the collective memories of that night: There was Tsay, acting on a split-second life-or-death decision, confronting the gunman, who just moments before was pointing the weapon directly at him. Tsay lunged toward him. Arms outstretched. The struggle ensued in the Lai Lai lobby: A gunman intent on more killing. Tsay, who’d never held a gun in his life, determined to stop him.

Tsay would succeed – a life-saving triumph amid an unfolding, epic tragedy.

Overnight, Brandon Tsay was a national hero, the personal guest of the president of the United States at the State of the Union, and a new face of hope in a nation struggling with how to deal with a relentless pattern of mass shootings. He’s been the recipient of countless awards and honors, including a Medal of Courage from the Alhambra Police Department.

“He grew up very fast overnight,” his older sister Brenda Tsay said. “He kind of was like the sheltered child before the incident. Now he’s definitely like a grown man. An adult, like trying to do something for society.”

Life is indeed different. After all, virtually overnight, he went from quietly helping his family at the dance studio to taking a bow with the likes of Bono in a joint session of Congress, its polarized membership agreeing on at least one thing: a standing ovation for his heroism.

At numerous events, elected officials have praised that heroism. Strangers come up to shake his hands. Tsay even received an offer to become a deputy sheriff, something he said he has considered but is not pursuing at this point, because it is not the right fit for him.

“There was a time where I never thought that somebody famous would call my phone, but now it just seems like a daily occurrence to me,” Tsay, 26, recently told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune during a community dance at Lai Lai, which itself is gradually recovering after the nearby mass shooting on Jan. 21, and the the thwarted shooting.

Months later, the difficult memories are still fresh for Tsay and the community all around him. But from the ashes of a real-life nightmare, the quiet kid who always put others’ needs over his own has found renewed purpose.

It’s a vision that combines the selflessness he’d always had with a fame he’d never dreamed of.

“I’ve been able to reach out to many other individuals who I’ve never thought I’d be connecting with, and they’ve been reaching out to me,” he said. “You know, each one is a surprise, each one is unique. It’s an opportunity each time in different fields.”

Things are happening fast.

During an interview on “Good Morning America” on May 26, Tsay received a $10,000 scholarship from GMA and Gold House, a nonprofit dedicated to elevating the societal impact of Asians and Pacific Islanders. Sallie Mae, which offers education loans, added another $20,000 to Tsay’s studies fund.

Tsay is applying to universities, where he plans to go into a major that focuses on human behavior and how it relates to the mass shootings, because he wants to do more for his community, Brenda Tsay said.

At the recent community dance at his family’s ballroom, Tsay’s ideas were brimming on how to use his newfound celebrity as an opportunity.

For starters, giving back to his community remains Tsay’s top priority.

Tsay has harvested a lot of personal connections with his new fame, which he plans to use to help spotlight his community by sharing its heritage, history and dance culture with others, he said.

One idea he has is to collaborate with influencers and celebrities to do a segment on the Asian dance community, Tsay said.

“Through my platform, I’ve been able to talk about a lot of Asian community struggles,” he said. “So I’m hoping that with these talks, we will be able to bring awareness to our representation in government to see what we could do about it.”

In the weeks following the shooting, many people have reached out to Tsay with offers of gifts and donations. In response, Tsay and his family have partnered with the Asian Pacific Community Fund to create the Brandon Tsay Hero Fund, which is dedicated to raising mental health awareness and de-stigmatizing the issue within minority groups.

“Right now I’m trying to focus on nonprofit work, especially with my funds,” he said. “I’m trying to promote the fund, to raise awareness to medical health and mental wellness with youth groups and seniors that are under-represented.”

Tsay started the fund with the $2,500 already sent to his family by the public.

According to a mission statement on the fund’s webpage, the funding will be used to provide mental health resources for all members of the community, despite their background, race or ethnicity.

He is trying to do “the most good for the most amount of people”, by shining a light on social injustice issues, especially those faced by the AAPI group, Brenda said.

For those closest to Brandon, his selflessness was not a surprise.

Her brother has always put other people’s needs and priorities before his own, Brenda Tsay said.

When their mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer, Brandon, who was a first-year student at Pasadena City College at the time, immediately dropped his studies.

For almost two years, he accompanied her to seek treatment in different regions of the world, including Taiwan and Japan. At the same time, Brandon insisted that his sister finish her degree at the University of Washington in Seattle.

And when their mother died in 2017, just 15 days before Brenda had her first child, Brandon took up the family business and kept it running while Brenda started her family and had babies, she said.

The ballroom studio has always been their grandmother and mother’s dream.

Brenda’s dream was to have kids, she said.

“But these are not his dreams,” Brenda said. “He had to take a lot of responsibility and give up his college dreams and whatever he wanted to do in the future because of his family, and his community, his ballroom dance community.”

That was why she wasn’t surprised when Brandon put his own life at risk for the people inside the studio. Because that’s the kind of person he is, Brenda said.

Right now, though, it’s Brandon’s turn to choose his dream and path, she said.

“I’ve already had kids and I’ve already reached a certain point in my life where I can take over the ballroom when Brandon just had to hold it off for me,” she said. “I think it’s now his turn to do what he wants to do because I did what I wanted to do.”

And so, five months after the shooting at Star Ballroom Dance Studio – and the thwarted shooting at Lai Lai — a proud family shines the light on Brandon Tsay.

“He’s always been the tech guy trying to set up the stage,” Brenda said. “That’s the difference right now, he’s in the spotlight versus making the spotlight.”

Her brother is up for the task.

“I think that now that I have a voice, I should really do something important with it for the community, share some positive vibes and positive light … a sense of togetherness,” Tsay said.

Star Ballroom – site of Monterey Park mass shooting – on brink of closing for good, owner says

The owner of Star Ballroom Dance Studio, the site of the horrific mass shooting that cost 11 dancers their lives earlier this year, confirmed this week that she has “almost” made up her mind that she won’t reopen the business.

“I don’t think I want to reopen again,” said owner Maria Liang on Wednesday, May 24. “It’s still difficult to return to the same spot to work.”

Liang, who took over the Monterey Park dance studio in 2013, would be open to offers from potential buyers, but said that no one so far has approached her about taking over the business.

Both Liang and many in the community lamented the likely closure of what had been a longtime fixture in the typically quiet city.

Star Ballroom Dance Studio, which opened on West Garvey Avenue in 1990, offered a variety of dance lessons with renowned professional instructors. It also served as a social hub, particularly for immigrants seeking to form friendships through dance lessons and community events for over two decades.

But on Jan. 21, the start of the Lunar New Year, that community safe haven was shattered when a lone shooter entered and opened fire in the studio with seemingly no motive. Eleven elderly dancers — My My Nhan, LiLan Li, Xiujuan Yu, Muoi Dai Ung, Hongying Jian, Yu-Lun Kao, Chia Ling Yau, Valentino Marcos Alvero, Wen-Tau Yu, Diana Man Ling Tom, and Ming Wei Ma, the studio’s original owner — were killed inside.

The gunman, Huu Can Tran, 72, of Hemet, would minutes later enter the nearby Lai Lai Ballroom & Dance Studio in Alhambra, where a second attack was thwarted. He would ultimately flee to Torrance, where he shot and killed himself the next day.

In the aftermath, the city rallied to support its community in an ongoing recovery effort. Asian Americans Advancing Justice raised over $1 million for victims of the tragedy, and is holding regular bystander intervention trainings.

A Monterey Park Community Fund is collecting donations to foster connectivity and safety. Most recently, a portion of the $60,000 currently raised will be donated to those who witnessed the traumatic events. Federal, state and local grants and loans were created to support surrounding local businesses. The Chinatown Service Center set up drop-in counseling at the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library. And a number of Asian American organizations nationwide have stepped up to provide in-language mental health services to those in need.

Still, these communal efforts may not be enough to save the beloved studio.

Liang, who was personal friends with many of the victims who died, and whose brother was among nine others injured during the Jan. 21 shooting, said that she is slowly finding ways to move forward with the support of friends and family.

But, she admits, “it’s hard to get rid of all these bad memories.”

About a month after the shooting, Liang issued nearly 300 refund checks — valued at more than $80,000 — to students who had prepaid for group classes or access to the dance studio, she said.

Liang added that perhaps one day she’ll feel strong enough to embrace one of her passions again, but months after the tragedy, that day hasn’t come.

“I haven’t returned to dancing. My teachers, they would like me to return to other studios … but I haven’t gone back to the dance floor,” she said. “It’s too painful – I just don’t want to remember the bad things.”

A few miles away, the Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio hosted an open community dance on Saturday, May 20, aiming to foster joy and healing in the wake of tragedy.

Peter Chou, who danced at both Lai Lai and Star Ballroom, attended and said that ex-pats like himself would have one fewer place to mingle after Star Dance shuts down for good.

“When you come here, you feel as if you have returned to your hometown,” said Chou, 76, who came to the U.S. from Taiwan and has been dancing for more than 10 years. “People here all come from similar backgrounds, so there’s a sense of belonging.”

Spending time at the dance studio offers Chou and others a chance to exercise, Chou said, but it also serves as a gathering place for people who share the same culture, language and traditions. Chou hopes that another dance studio will open up in the area soon, to bring “light and hope” to the community.

Kristenne Reidy, the daughter of Valentino Alvero, one of the victims, said she also heard that Star Dance may close for good.

“It’s very sad to see that, but I love to see Lai Lai thriving. My dad was a weekly dancer here at Lai Lai , too. He goes to all the dance halls,” she said.

Alvero was an avid dancer who frequented local dance venues and events. Reidy believes those who love to dance, like her dad, will continue to find a way to keep their passion alive.

Lai Lai studio instructor Mike Huang has spent more than 30 years in the Asian dance community.

“For people who love to dance, they will find it hard to quit,” said Huang, 68.

Monterey Park Mayor Pro Tem Thomas Wong was “saddened” to hear of the possible closure “after providing a service and gathering space for so many in our community for so many years.”

“Monterey Park is resilient, and we are committed to working to build other safe spaces for our community to come together for healing, dancing and celebration,” Wong said.

Kevin Leung is the head instructor of a traditional Chinese martial arts school that used the Star Ballroom Dance Studio for classes for over eight years. In between ballroom lessons, music classes and social events at the studio, the Siu Lum Pai Kung Fu Association held its martial arts classes and lion dance rehearsals for kids and adults.

In the weeks following the shooting, Leung said it was important to continue having classes in a nearby park, for the younger students to feel a sense of “normalcy” even without their traditional practice space. Though Leung hoped the studio would eventually reopen, he understood the owner’s position.

Leung said that he spoke with Maria Liang “a few months ago,” and even then she was unsure about the studio’s future after the tragedy. He remembered the many instructors who helped Liang operate Star Dance – the “safe, communal place” it was for patrons – and lamented its closure.

“It’s obviously bittersweet, losing our home at Star Dance. We were really hoping that we’d be able to reopen again,” Leung said. “It would be a nice, strong statement for the community. Everyday I drive past it now, and they already took down the sign and have the ‘For Rent’ sign… it’s still on everybody’s mind; what happened there.”

Leung has since moved his kung fu school inside a Chinese language school in the neighborhood. He remains hopeful that a Monterey Park dance studio serving the community, particularly Asian and immigrant seniors, will get to open again and “fill that void.”

He noted the banner stretching across Garfield Avenue: “United We Dance.”

“It sends the message that, no matter what, we’re still strong as a community.”

  The Alhambra man accused of stabbing to death a teenager last week outside a restaurant in the Los Angeles community of El Sereno was picked up by a driver afterward, police said on Thursday, March 9 — hours before authorities say he struck again, stabbing and wounding a man.
  
  “Both incidents were completely unprovoked,” said Lt. Ryan Rabbett of the March 3 stabbings, one killing 17-year-old Xavier Chavarin as he waited for his mother. “These victims were attacked for no apparent reason.”
  
  The driver was in a small SUV, a 1996 to 2001 Honda CR-V, authorities said at a press conference at the Los Angeles Police Department’s headquarters. They did not elaborate but called the motorist a suspect in the first stabbing.

  Acting on tips, surveillance footage and witness accounts, police, Wednesday morning, March 8, went to the Alhambra home of David Zapata, 32, and after a two-hour standoff persuaded him to come out and arrested him for murder.
  
  Both stabbings occurred less than two miles apart. Chavarin was stabbed that afternoon multiple times in the back outside the King Torta restaurant in the 4500 block of Valley Boulevard before stumbling inside, while the second victim, a 33-year-old man, was stabbed five hours later in front of Valley Food & Liquor in the 5400 block on the same street. The man was expected to recover.
  
  In the second stabbing, the suspect was seen on surveillance footage with a skateboard.
  
  LAPD officials have said Zapata had undergone mental-health evaluations following previous arrests without elaborating.
  
  “We did attempt to interview Mr. Zapata,” Lt. Rabbett said at Thursday’s press conference. “I will tell you that his mental health is no reason for what he did.”
  
  The lieutenant would not comment when asked what was said, if anything, between Zapata and the victims before the stabbings. Detectives had no evidence to suggest Zapata tried to rob the victims, police said.
  
  At the Thursday press conference, Rabbett said Zapata has seven misdemeanor arrests on his record. The lieutenant did not describe them.
  
  Neighbors told the Southern California News Group that Zapata lived at the apartment with his grandmother.
  
  LA County serial rapist sentenced to 310 years in prison

  ALHAMBRA — A Santa Clarita man who pleaded no contest to sexually assaulting seven women was sentenced Wednesday to 310 years to life in prison by a judge who called him a “predator.”
  
  “Frankly, it’s stunning how much pain and suffering one man can inflict,” Superior Court Judge Jared Moses said after hearing statements from four victims who were attacked by Nicolas Morales. “We’re here because of the courage of the seven women.”
  
  The judge noted that he believed all of the victims who testified at an earlier hearing that they didn’t think they were going to survive the attacks, saying that one woman’s head was smashed against a vehicle dashboard and that another woman was choked when she tried to fight back.
  
  “The defendant was a predator pretending to be an Uber or Lyft driver,” the judge said. “He took advantage of a position of trust by pretending to be a rideshare driver.”
  
  The judge also ordered the 49-year-old defendant to register as a sex offender if he is released from prison, but said he believes the defendant is too dangerous to ever live outside prison walls.
  
  As his trial was underway last month, Morales pleaded no contest to 27 counts including forcible rape and other counts of sexual assault.
  
  Morales’ victims gave emotional accounts during the sentencing hearing, with one woman identified in court as Jane Doe 1 writing in a statement read in court on her behalf that she has “never been so hurt and broken before” and that she still has trauma and flashbacks.
  
  Another woman, identified in court as Jane Doe 2, said she wishes that the defendant could know how he impacted his victims’ lives.
  
  “I just feel like my life, it just stopped there. I haven’t been able to move on at all,” she said.
  
  Jane Doe 3 said she had “waited for this day for a very long time,” saying she felt that she faced an imminent threat of death for three hours and wondered if it was her last day alive after calling for an Uber and getting in Morales’ vehicle as he posed as a ride-hailing service driver.
  
  “You didn’t break me. You only broke yourself and your family,” the woman said in an emotional statement.
  
  Jane Doe 6 told the judge that she opted after the attack to run five miles from her job to her home instead of getting into a car with someone she didn’t know, and that she started “blaming myself.” She said she is still trying to find herself.
  
  The series of attacks occurred in areas throughout Los Angeles County, including Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Burbank and Alhambra between October 2016 and January 2018.
  
  Morales was arrested in February 2018 by Alhambra police and has remained behind bars since then.

  COSTA MESA (CBSLA) — An attempted murder suspect led police in a high-speed pursuit Monday on several surface streets through Orange County.
  
  Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies spotted a vehicle in Bellflower Monday that matched the description of one involved in a car-to-car shooting at Marengo Avenue and Valley Boulevard in Alhambra on Saturday morning. Alhambra police say no one was hit by the gunfire, and surveillance video gave investigators enough information to put a “want” on the suspect vehicle in the shooting.
  
  The deputies gave chase, which wound its way across the region’s freeways including the 91, 5, and 405 freeways before spilling onto surface streets.
  
  The suspect, in a gray sedan, was seen driving at high speeds on surface streets, on road shoulders and center dividers, blowing through stop signs and stop lights, and going the wrong way, nearly hitting oncoming traffic at one point.
  
  Police say the driver will also face a charge of assault with a deadly weapon against an officer for an incident that happened during the pursuit.
  
  Sky 9 showed the driver got out of the sedan in a neighborhood cul-de-sac and jumped a wall, and was seen running with a gun in his hand toward an office complex. He was later spotted trying to get into a red vehicle that had its driver’s side door open and apparently threatened a worker who backed off with his hands up.
  
  The suspect was unable to drive off in the car and tried to run off on foot again, but deputies had arrived by then, and took him into custody. Alhambra police say a weapon was found in the suspect’s possession.
  
  A passenger was also taken into custody.
  
  Alhambra Ice Cream Shop Victim Of Smash-And-Grab Burglary Early Saturday Morning

  The incident occurred at around 3 a.m. Saturday morning and the suspects were partially caught on security camera.
  
  Police said that there were three suspects who broke in to the business and stole an unknown amount of money.

  Six Injured After Car Crashes Through Window Of Alhambra Restaurant

  ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) — Six people were injured Thursday when a car crashed into a restaurant in Alhambra.
  
  The crash occurred around 1:25 p.m. at Chengdu Taste restaurant located at 828 W. Valley Blvd., according to the Alhambra Police Department.
  
  Three people inside the restaurant were taken to a trauma center with serious injuries, and the remaining three had minor injuries.
  
  Police said the driver pressed on the gas instead of the break while making a left turn onto eastbound Valley Boulevard.
  
  The vehicle then veered onto the sidewalk and through the front window of the restaurant, according to police.
  
  The driver remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators.
  
  Valley Boulevard was closed between Atlantic Boulevard and Seventh Street authorities investigated.

  Alhambra Unified School District Sees Flurry Of Last-Minute Requests For Virtual Learning

  ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) — Many schools are reopening for full-time, in-person learning for the first time in more than 17 months, but with COVID-19 infections on the rise again, some parents don’t feel conditions are safe enough for their children to return to campuses.
  
  Alhambra Unified School District tweeted out a plea for patience this weekend as they process a flurry of last-minute requests for virtual learning — just days before its first day of school on Thursday.
  
  “I don’t think even the families know that the Zoom instruction is not going to be like the students had it
  
  last semester or last year,” said Maaribel Ahumada, parent of an LAUSD 11th grade student. “They don’t even know it’s independent.”

  ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) – A large house fire broke out in Alhambra Friday morning and forced surrounding homes to be evacuated.

  The blaze was reported in the 600 block of South Electric Avenue sometime before 6 a.m.
  
  Alhambra Fire Department crews arrived on scene to find heavy flames and smoke coming from the home.
  
  At one point, aerial footage from Sky2 showed a man being handcuffed at the scene. Alhambra police told CBSLA that the man had been trying to extinguish the fire, but when officers asked him to move, he became uncooperative, so they placed him in handcuffs and detained him.
  
  Several nearby homes were evacuated as well.
  
  There was no word of any injuries. The cause and circumstances of the fire were not confirmed.
Man Reportedly In Grave Condition After Being Shot During Alhambra Break-In

Police did not confirm whether anyone had been shot, but according to reports, a man was shot once in the stomach. He was not identified.

One woman is in custody.

The shooting occurred at 12:30 a.m. Friday near the intersection of West Ramona Road and Westminster Drive.

Alhambra police responded to find the man dead at the scene. He was not identified.

The suspect remains at large. There was no word on the circumstances of the shooting or a motive.

‘You Go With The Flow’: Barbershop Reopens In Parking Lot Following Gov. Newsom’s Amended Orders

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) — Some salon and barbershop owners have begun to set up their stations in parking lots after the state gave permission to reopen outside with limited services.

When barbershop owner Sam Artino found out Monday that hair salons and barbershops would be allowed to move their services outdoors, the 78-year-old wasted no time setting up canopies and his chair in his building’s parking lot.

Since 5 a.m. this morning, the cutting and clipping at Sam’s Barber Shop in Alhambra has been non-stop.

“At my age, you go with the flow,” Artino said. “I’ve been through a lot in my years, I’ve been cutting hair 62 years. Little stuff like this doesn’t bother me.”

The governor’s order allows limited services like cuts and blowouts, nothing that would require customers to go inside.

Artino feels fortunate that unlike salon owners, whose businesses depend largely on color or chemical services, he can start cutting hair and catching up with customers.

“I called him right away and made an appointment, it was very exciting. Feels a lot nice having your hair cut,” said customer Nick Glorioso.

Artino says over the past few months, his landlord cut his rent in half and now lets him use the parking lot.

Just like he’s always done, Artino says he constantly sanitizes and makes sure everyone is wearing a mask. He says moving outside hasn’t been too much of an inconvenience.

“The only thing really is that I have a vacuum system in the shop and I can’t use it out here, and also, I have to go in-between haircuts and wash inside my shop because I don’t have running water here. Other than that, it’s business as usual,” Artino said.

“It’s not too bad, aside from the heat,” Glorioso said. “Everything else is fine. I’m as comfortable out here as I was in there.”

Artino says thanks to his godson and a loyal community, he’s able to pick up his scissors again. He hopes others in his business will get the same kind of support.

“It would be nice if people would just got their favorite hair cutters or barbers, or whoever’s out of work, and send them a check,” Artino said.

“Pay for your haircut a year in advance, pay for your haircut six months in advance, you know? Give them a little money now that they need it.”

Approximately 3,300 Lose Power In Alhambra After Transformers Explode

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) — Approximately 3,300 SoCal Edison customers were without power Wednesday night in Alhambra after several transformers exploded, causing power lines to fall to the ground.

Fire crews were on scene shortly before 9 p.m. and had set up a perimeter around the downed lines at Valley Boulevard and Westminster Avenue, near the 710 Freeway, as they waited for SCE crews to arrive.

As of 9:30, approximately 665 customers were without power, though it was not immediately known how long it would be until power was fully restored.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Dinh Thai still has a dry cough that makes it hard for him to breathe.

“It’s crazy,” he said before he started coughing. “That’s the cough. It just comes out of nowhere.”

It’s clear from listening that the cough is deep in his chest.

“It’s really low, and I feel it also in the back of my throat,” Thai said. “And the combination of shortness of breath is what makes it scary.”

Thai, a freelance writer and director based in Alhambra, is nearing the end of a two-week illness that doctor’s said to assume was the novel coronavirus.

“I’ve never been this sick in my life,” he said.

It all began March 14 when he started to feel tired and achy.

“After a couple of days, I started to have a fever that didn’t go away and then I checked myself into the ER here in downtown Los Angeles and they put me through a bunch of tests that all came back negative, but they couldn’t test me for COVID-19,” Thai said.

Doctors sent him home with Tylenol and ibuprofen and told him to assume he had the virus and to stay isolated. A few days later he called 911, but paramedics told him to stay home.

“And [they said] that if they took me to a hospital, I would just be laying there without care,” Thai said. “I’m not afraid to die, so I didn’t think of it that way. I was more afraid that I would be suffering.”

Thai said he was able to get through it, but is more concerned about his elderly mother and what the virus could do to her, so he took to Facebook to warn others about the virus.

“The whole reason for posting that is to, I think, hopefully tell people that this virus is very real,” he said. “I’m relatively healthy, I’m 46, I’m not overweight. I don’t have any other medical issues, and I found it pretty tough to try to get through that middle part.”

And on top of his health concerns, Thai, like many, is now out of work. He said he has savings to help him make it through the short term, but he doesn’t know just how long this will last.

Online Petition To Close Alhambra Schools Over Coronavirus Garners Thousands Of Signatures

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) – An online petition to close all campuses in the Alhambra Unified School District until the novel coronavirus outbreak ends has received more than 13,000 signatures.

The Change.org petition to “prevent spread of Wuhan coronavirus in AUSD by cancelling schools until outbreak ceases” had garnered more than 13,800 signatures as of Tuesday morning.

This comes after the city of Alhambra — which has a large Chinese-American population — postponed its long-running annual Lunar New Year celebration this past Saturday over coronavirus concerns. Downtown L.A.’s annual Golden Dragon Parade went forward Saturday, but seemed to get a smaller turnout than usual.

“We are in constant contact with public health, and the department of public health is telling us our schools are safe, are kids are safe,” a district spokeswoman told CBS2 Tuesday.

AUSD last week posted a coronavirus advisory on its website.

At last report Sunday, there were six confirmed cases of coronavirus in California. Of those, four are in Northern California and two in Southern California. They include one person in Los Angeles County, one in Orange County, two in Santa Clara County and two in San Benito County, according to the state Department of Public Health.

All three major U.S. airlines — Delta, American and United – have suspended flights to mainland China.

All other flights arriving from China are restricted — only allowed to land at seven airports, including L.A. International Airport. All passengers arriving from the Hubei Province of China are required to undergo a 14-day quarantine after arrival.

Downtown LA Lunar New Year Event Goes Forward Amid Coronavirus Scare

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – The annual Lunar New Year event in downtown Los Angeles went forward as planned Saturday despite a similar event being canceled in Alhambra over novel coronavirus concerns.

Tens of thousands of people were expected for the 121st annual Golden Dragon Parade –organized by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of L.A. However, some attendees said that this year’s turnout, despite perfect weather, was smaller than years prior.

“This year seems a little bit smaller than last year,” Bryce Barrows said.

They believe coronavirus concerns may be to blame.

“We’re just trying to prevent ourselves from being sick,” said sisters Natasha and Elizabeth Daniels, who wore face masks to the parade.

The parade began at the intersection of Hill and Ord streets and circled around to North Broadway. Several roads were shut down for the event.

The city of Alhambra Friday announced it was postponing its own Lunar New Year celebration Saturday. However, despite Alhambra’s decision, state and county health officials said in a news conference Friday afternoon that they were not recommending the cancellation of public events.

“There is no sustained person-to-person spread transmission of this virus, the novel coronavirus, in our United States,” said Dr. Muntu Davis with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

“It is important to stick to the facts, and dispel any misinformation going around about the virus,” state Assemblyman Ed Chu added.

L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti attended the parade, saying, “The flu is a bigger threat right now than coronavirus. We are going to everything we can to not only protect this city but protect this country.”

Alhambra officials hope to reschedule their celebration for sometime in May.

So far, California has three confirmed cases of coronavirus: one in L.A. County, one in Orange County and a third in Santa Clara County.

This comes after both Delta Air Lines and American Airlines announced Friday they will suspend all flights between the U.S. and China. Delta will halt flights through April 30, while American will suspend them through March 27.

Alhambra Postpones Lunar New Year Celebration Over Coronavirus Concerns

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) – The city of Alhambra has postponed its long-running annual Lunar New Year celebration, set for Saturday, due to the growing worldwide coronavirus outbreak.

On their website, organizers said that the event is being postponed due to the “community health situation.” A new date will be selected at some point in the future.

The celebration, in its 29th year, was set to take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday along a five-block stretch of Valley Boulevard, between Garfield Avenue and Almansor Street.

However, despite the announcement from the Alhambra Chamber of Commerce, state and county health officials said in a news conference Friday afternoon they were not recommending the cancellation of public events.

“There is no sustained person-to-person spread transmission of this virus, the novel coronavirus, in our United States,” said Dr. Muntu Davis with the L.A. County Department of Public Health.

Man, Woman Found Dead In Alhambra, Suspect In Custody

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) — A 42-year-old Alhambra man remained behind bars Saturday in connection with the deadly shooting of a man and woman inside an apartment in Alhambra.

The suspect, Sam Nhat Do, was arrested on suspicion of murder.

A man and a woman were found fatally shot at an apartment complex in the 400 block of North Second Street at about 7:13 p.m Friday.

Police said a handgun was found at the scene and that Do was taken into custody after he approached an officer and said he had shot two people.

Do is being held on $2 million bail.

A motive for the shooting was under investigation and efforts were underway to determine the relationship between the suspect and victims.

“There are no (other) outstanding suspects and the community is not in danger,” Cmdr. Gabriel Ponce of the Alhambra Police Department said.

Deputies Investigating After Body Of Elderly Asian Woman Found Near Almansor Park In Alhambra

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) — Homicide investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department were assisting the Alhambra Police Department after the body of an elderly woman was found Friday afternoon in Alhambra.

According to the sheriff’s department, Alhambra officers responded at about 12:28 p.m. to the area of a flood control channel near the Alhambra Golf Course in Almansor Park to do a welfare check on a woman near a rear access down.

When the officers arrived, they found an unconscious Asian woman alongside the flood control channel. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said they believe the victim might be a woman who was recently reported missing from San Gabriel, but said they would not release the victim’s name until she was positively identified and family members were notified.

The sheriff’s department said the woman’s cause of death was not immediately apparent and the investigation was ongoing.

This is a breaking story.

Deputies Take At Least 1 Carjacking Suspect Into Custody At End Of Pursuit In Alhambra

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) — Deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department took at least one carjacking suspect into custody Saturday night following a pursuit.

According to LASD, deputies were initially called to the 900 block of Goodrich Boulevard in Commerce for a suspected carjacking. The victim said a person pointed a gun at him and took his vehicle, a silver BMW 325i.

Deputies caught up with the suspected carjackers in East Los Angeles. The driver of the vehicle led police on a brief pursuit before colliding with another vehicle at Mission Road and Fremont Avenue in Alhambra.

Semi Truck Crashes In Alhambra After Leading Pursuit Out Of Sun Valley

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) — A police pursuit of a semi out of Sun Valley ended Monday in Alhambra with a chase into several other cars.

The chase started at about 4:30 a.m. at San Fernando Road and Penrose Street in the Sun Valley area. The suspect is believed to have stolen the semi.

Officers from LAPD’s Foothill Division chased the truck all the way to Alhambra, where it hit three cars and finally stopped on Atlantic and Valley boulevards in Alhambra.

The driver was taken into custody and treated for injuries in the back of a squad car. It’s not known if anyone else was injured.

Pedestrian Struck, Killed On 10 Freeway In Alhambra

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) — A pedestrian was killed early Monday on the 10 Freeway through Alhambra.

The crash happened just before 4 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the 10 Freeway, just east of Atlantic Boulevard. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

The gender and age of the pedestrian was not available, and it’s not clear if the person had gotten out of a car.

A Sigalert was issued for all eastbound lanes and the Fremont Avenue onramp immediately after the crash, but the Express Lanes reopened at 4:20 a.m.

Lanes were closed for the fatal crash investigation through at least 6:30 a.m.

One Hurt In Violent Crash Following Shooting Outside Alhambra 7-Eleven

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) – Police are investigating whether an SUV which crashed in Alhambra early Tuesday morning is linked to a car-to-car shooting outside a nearby 7-Eleven moments earlier.

According to Los Angeles police, a white SUV containing two people crashed at around 2 a.m. at the intersection of Cabrillo Avenue and Valley Boulevard. The female passenger was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries.

The driver was arrested at the scene, police said.

A short time earlier, shots had been fired from one vehicle to another following some kind of altercation outside a 7-Eleven at 5530 Valley Blvd., less than a half-mile from the crash scene. There was no immediate word that anyone was struck by the gunfire.

Police have not confirmed whether the people in the crashed SUV are suspected of being involved in the shooting.

Somber Vigil Held For Slain Sheriff’s Deputy Joseph Solano

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) — A somber vigil was held Thursday evening for slain Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Joseph Gilbert Solano.

He was shot in the back of the head — in what officials believe was an unprovoked random attack — Monday evening while he was on line waiting to order food at an Alhambra Jack in the Box.

The suspect in the killing of the 50-year-old deputy was described by his family as a young man from Utah who has been battling drug addiction. Authorities say he was in the middle of a violent crime spree that allegedly included another murder and half a dozen armed robberies.

Many of Solano’s friends and family gathered in Alhambra Thursday evening for a candlelight vigil and as CBS2/KCAL9’s Chris Holmstom reported, mourners chose to remember how Solano lived rather than how he died.

Solano’s grieving son, Matthew Solano, was almost inconsolable as many reached out to offer support, hugs and prayers.

It was an evening of love and support for the entire Solano family as dozens remembered him.

His stepdaughter, Jessica Jiminez, spoke to the crowd.

“He didn’t deserve this – it’s a tough time for all of us,” she said.

She shared an emotional message from the entire family.

“He was a great man – and a great father and son brother and friend and I’m just so thankful that you guys are giving him and showing him everything that he possibly deserved,” she said.

Solano was a 13-year veteran with the Sheriff’s Department. About a dozen of his colleagues also came to show their support to the family. They even lined up to write final farewells.

Solano’s childhood friend, Victor Pallares, was also there.

“You know he’s off duty and dropping his car off for his mom to get service and comes in to grab something to eat and that’s the end of the watch. It’s just tough,” said Pallares.

It was also tough for strangers like Jason Villalba — he was working on Solano’s mom’s car when the unthinkable happened.

He had supportive words for the family. And he came to often physical support along with the emotional support.

“Just so the family can know that they are not alone, it is sad what happened. You never know what’s going to happen. And I’m sorry for their loss,” Villalba says.

The kinds words mean a lot to a family as they are living a nightmare.

“I appreciate everyone’s time and concern,” Matthew says, “and coming out to support my father it’s really heavy to come here and see the support from everyone, it means the world.”

The family said funeral arrangements are in the planning stages.

Deputy Solano Dies 2 Days After Being Shot In The Head At Jack In The Box

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) — LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said he had “a somber, sad announcement” Wednesday when he told the media that deputy Joseph Gilbert Solano died Wednesday afternoon.

Solano was shot in the back of the head Monday evening while ordering food at a Jack in the Box in Alhambra.

Villanueva said Solano died “despite a valiant effort” by the medical staff at the hospital. “They worked diligently around the clock for the last two days trying to do a miracle but, unfortunately, that didn’t come to pass.”

Officials believe the attack was random. Solano was off-duty at the time of the shooting and in plain clothes.

A suspect in his murder was taken into custody Tuesday morning in Long Beach.

Authorities believe the same man may also be responsible for a killing in downtown Los Angeles which occurred about one hour prior to the deputy’s shooting.

At an emotional press conference Wednesday outside County-USC Medical Center Solano’s son, step-daughter and longtime girlfriend all spoke. choking back tears.

His son Matthew thanked “everyone who has had my dad in their prayers.”

He said, “Unfortunately, we have lost him. He was a really good dad. So…I thank all the law enforcement agencies that have been a part of this and thank you to everyone that has had him in their prayers. Continue to pray for him and my family, please. Thank you.”

Matthew, Jessica — his step-sister — and the victim’s girlfriend — named Juliana — all held hands and stood behind Villanueva his voice also breaking.

Said Jessica, “Joseph Gilbert Solano was my step-father. He has been in my life for over 11 years. And not only did I lose a father figure but a best friend. But I would like to thank everyone who has supported us, sent us prayers and the whole entire law enforcement. Everyone has been more than supportive and helped us with whatever we needed.”

She had one plea for the public.

“All I ask is that you don’t forget about him,” Jessica said, “he was a hard-working man and was loved by many. He would want us to continue his legacy and never forget him.”

“This is a moment that I dread,” Villanueva said, “And it happened sooner than I thought.”

He added, “I didn’t know him personally. But in the hallway in front of his ICU room, I could see the tears of each one of his co-workers….and I could feel their loss. That is my loss, the loss of everyone.”

The suspect has been identified 30-year-old Rhett McKenzie Nelson of Saint George, Utah, the sheriff’s department reports.

Nelson is being held on $2 million bail.

It was announced Wednesday that he is also a suspect in the armed robbery of five convenience stores in the San Diego area.

Solano, off-duty and in civilian clothes, was ordering food shortly before 6 p.m. Monday at a Jack in the Box at 2531 W Valley Blvd. when a man walked up behind him brandishing a handgun and shot him in the back of the head, according to the sheriff’s department.

Off-Duty Deputy In Critical Condition After Being Shot Inside Alhambra Jack In The Box

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) – An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was in critical condition Monday night after being shot in the head in a restaurant in Alhambra.

The shooting occurred inside a Jack in the Box near Fremont Avenue and Valley Boulevard.

The deputy was transported to County + USC Medical Center with a head injury and was in critical condition as of Monday night.

In a press conference at 10p.m. Monday night, sheriff’s officials said the deputy was shot in the head while off-duty and wearing civilian clothing.

The 13-year-veteran was said to be ordering food when the suspect walked up to him and shot him once in the back of the head.

The sheriff’s department released photos of the suspect, who was caught on camera shooting the deputy.

California Highway Patrol put out an alert for a white 2006 Kia Sportage with paper plates that was seen on surveillance footage fleeing the scene.

CBSLA’s Chris Holmstrom spoke to a Jack in the Box Employee who was working when the shooting occurred.

“I was actually sitting down in the break room when all I heard was a loud bang,” said Jesus Guzman.

Guzman thought the sound was coming from the kitchen, but then he saw customers running out of the store, and a gunshot victim on the ground.

“I go lean over and I see, I think he got shot in the head because there was a hole in his head,” recalled Guzman.

He then called 911 and told them the man who was shot was not breathing.

Guzman said the suspect fled as if nothing happened.

The suspect was still at large as of Monday night. He was described as a white man 20 to 30 years old, between 5-foot-9 and 5-foot-11, wearing a burgundy short-sleeved button-down shirt, slim blue jeans, a light fedora hat, and sunglasses. His vehicle was described as a white, 4-door, 2010-2014 Kia Sorento SUV with paper plates.

Investigators say the suspect is believed to have changed into a black T-shirt and black jeans shortly after the shooting.

Assault With Deadly Weapon Suspect Ducks Into Parking Garage

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) — The high-speed chase of an assault with a deadly weapon suspect ended abruptly Wednesday evening when the suspect pulled into an apartment building parking garage.

Police gave chase but at least one of the suspect’s in the vehicle foot bailed.

At least one other suspect was apprehended, police said. Other reports said two people were in custody with police looking for “at least” one other suspect.

The chase reportedly began in the Culver City area and ended at the apartment complex in Alhambra near Hellman Avenue and Atlantic Boulevard.

Police continued the search for the outstanding suspect along an on-ramp on the eastbound 10 Freeway.

The LAPD and CHP were both involved in the chase.

Earlier in the evening, police chased a suspect from North Hills through Beverly Hills to Bel Air. That suspect was accused of carjacking. The suspect surrendered after his car became disabled and had several near-misses zig-zagging through traffic.

On normally busy Ventura Boulevard, the suspect took several hairpin turns and had chase watchers on the edge of their seats.

The suspect in the chase was considered particularly dangerous as police believed he was armed with an assault-style rifle. The suspect wore a mask and carjacked a vehicle from a car dealer in North Hills, police said.

Storm Topples Large Trees In Alhambra

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) – The large storm that rolled through Southern California toppled two large trees in Alhambra overnight Wednesday.

One of the felled trees came down in the front yard of an apartment complex in the 700 block of South Chapel Avenue. The tree damaged a power line in the process.

Southern California Edison contractors were on scene Thursday morning working to chop up and remove the tree and restore service. As of 5:30 a.m., 68 SoCal Edison customers were without service, according to the utility’s website.

The second tree came down about three miles away, in the 2000 block of West Hellman Avenue in Granada Park.

No one was injured in either incident.

The storm front had mostly made its way out of the region by Thursday morning. Conditions were expected to be mostly dry with scattered showers.

Caltrans Officially Kills 710 Extension Project After Decades Of Debate

PASADENA (CBSLA) — The 710 Freeway extension project is officially dead after six decades of debate over lengthening the busy interstate route from Alhambra to Pasadena. Caltrans announced Wednesday that it had finalized a report endorsing local street improvements instead of a freeway tunnel.

“After many years of discussion, the greater Pasadena, South Pasadena and Alhambra community can move forward with important local road and transit improvements to help more people get to where they’re going while keeping communities connected,” Caltrans Secretary Brian Annis said.

Annis joined a host of local officials in Pasadena to announce the certification of the final environmental impact report on the freeway gap, adopting the local street improvements in lieu of a tunnel that would have connected the Long Beach (710) Freeway with the Foothill (210) Freeway at a cost of more than $3 billion.

The adoption of the local-street alternative became all-but-inevitable last year when the Metro Board of Directors diverted $700 million in funding away from the tunnel proposal and applied it to area road projects. Other options that had been considered to close the freeway gap included a rapid-transit bus line, a light-rail line and a “no-build” option.

“I’m ecstatic that the EIR was finally signed, bringing closure to this six-decade 710 fight,” said Sen. Anthony Portantino, D-La Canada Flintridge. “Generations of neighbors on both sides of this issue passionately pushed their perspectives and now we can all turn our attentions to collaboratively solving local transportation needs. This removes the threat of the freeway and allows Caltrans to sell the balance of properties acquired to facilitate its construction.”

The possibility of a 710 extension has been on the table for decades, but has been thwarted by generations of opposition from some of the communities in its path, including South Pasadena. Caltrans began in the 1950s and 1960s buying empty lots, houses and apartments along the planned route of the surface freeway extension. But a series of lawsuits and opposition from some communities and activists has kept the project in perpetual limbo for decades.

Two years ago, Caltrans began the process of selling off the houses and apartments it owns along the corridor as part of its shift away from a surface freeway extension and toward a tunnel or other options.

The tunnel received a wave of momentum after county voters approved Measure R in 2008, a half-cent sales tax that raised $780 million for improvements along the 710 corridor, some of which has already been spent on studies and reports.

Some leaders of communities along the corridor, including Alhambra, had been in support of the tunnel as a viable alterative to relieve the extra congestion and air pollution caused by freeway traffic cutting through the surface streets. But other communities opposed it out of safety concerns over building the tunnel and with doubts that it would relieve congestion or reduce
air pollution in the area.

A Metro study concluded the tunnel would have carried 90,000 vehicles and removed 42,000 vehicles a day from local streets.

Man Guns Down Coworker At Chinese Newspaper Office In Alhambra

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) – A man who allegedly shot and killed one of his coworkers at a newspaper office in Alhambra was arrested Friday in what authorities are calling a case of workplace violence.

Alhambra police report that the shooting occurred at about 9:30 a.m. at the offices of the China Press, located in the 2100 block of West Mission Road.

Police responded to find a man with multiple gunshot wounds who later died at the scene. His name was not released.

The suspect was one of several people in China Press when officers arrived on scene and he was detained and later arrested. A gun was recovered, police said. His name was also not released.

Both men were colleagues, police said, but their exact relationship and a motive for the shooting was not immediately confirmed. The identities of both men have not been released.

Investigators believe the incident was confined to the two men, and no other parties were involved.

An editor at the China Press told CBS2’s Randy Paige close to 100 people work in the building, and about 70 percent of the building houses the China Press, a local newspaper that serves the Chinese community.

Driver Trapped After Car Gets Wedged Under Semi In Alhambra

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) – A driver had to be extricated from his car after it somehow got wedged underneath a semi-truck in Alhambra overnight Thursday.

According to Alhambra police, just before midnight, a tractor-trailer pulling out of the driveway for a Jack in the Box at South Chapel Avenue and Valley Boulevard collided with a sedan that was travelling west on Valley Boulevard.

The sedan then slid under the big rig, police said, leaving its driver unconscious and trapped inside, police said.

Alhambra Fire Department crews responded freed the driver. He was rushed to a local hospital in unknown condition. The truck was also leaking gasoline onto the roadway.

Drugs and alcohol likely did not contribute to the crash, police said. The investigation is ongoing. Its unclear if any charges would be filed. No names were released.

Meanwhile, at around the same time, about three miles away – and also in Alhambra — two motorcyclists were injured when they lost control of their bikes and slammed into a parked car and a power pole, police report. The crash occurred at about 11:50 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Westminster Avenue and Valley Boulevard.

Both riders were taken to a hospital and are expected to survive, police said.

Drugs or alcohol were likely not factors in that crash either.

Baby Sitter Faces Felony Child Endangerment For Allegedly Leaving Boy In Hot Car

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) — A baby sitter is scheduled to face a judge Thursday on felony child endangerment charges after allegedly leaving a 6-year-old boy in a hot car for nearly two hours.

Helen Law, 60, was arrested Tuesday afternoon after Alhambra Police found her charge locked inside a car with the windows rolled up. The boy had been spotted by a passersby, pouring sweat and crying.

Officers were able to get inside the car and help the child, before taking a temperature reading of the interior.

The high in Alhambra was 90 degrees Tuesday, but inside the car, the officer’s thermometer read 120 degrees.

As the officers searched for the boy’s parents, police say they came in contact with a woman claiming to be his baby sitter. Their investigation found the woman, later identified as Law, had left the boy in the car while she ran errands, then went to eat at a nearby restaurant.

The boy was left inside the locked car for almost two hours, police said.

The boy was taken to a hospital for treatment and evaluation, while Law was arrested on suspicion of felony child endangerment.

Law was scheduled to make her first court appearance Thursday.

3 Restaurants Destroyed In Massive 2-Alarm Blaze In San Gabriel Strip Mall

SAN GABRIEL (CBSLA) – A large two-alarm fire destroyed three restaurants in a San Gabriel strip mall Wednesday morning.

The fire was reported at 6:19 a.m. at Valley Boulevard and New Avenue, according to Verdugo Fire Communications Center dispatchers. Plumes of black smoke and flames could be seen shooting hundreds of feet into the air.

“Coming this way it almost looked like an aircraft had gone down,” witness Chester Weaver said.

San Gabriel Fire Department crews were battling the blaze when they realized the roof was about to give way and collapse.

“They had started to remove themselves, and it did go ahead and collapse, so at that point, we pulled everyone off,” San Gabriel Fire Division Chief Art Stafford told CBS2.

There were no reported injuries.

Three restaurants in the strip mall were destroyed, according to the fire department. They were closed at the time.

“From what I’ve heard there were some workers, but they were immediately evacuated,” San Gabriel Fire Division Chief Art Stafford told CBS2. “There were no businesses in operation at the time.”

The fire is believed to have started in an attic space.

Valley Boulevard was shut down in both directions between New and Prospect avenues for several hours. It reopened fully just before 2 p.m.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the blaze. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms was called in to assist with the investigation.

Metro Holds Off On Controversial Plan To Widen 710 Freeway

BELL GARDENS (CBSLA) – The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority board Thursday decided not to immediately move forward with a hotly-debated multi-billion plan to widen the aging 710 Freeway, which runs north from Long Beach to the Alhambra area.

While the Metro board approved smaller-scale improvements to the 710 Freeway, it opted not to immediately proceed with plans to widen the roadway itself.

The proposals that Metro held off on range in cost anywhere from an estimated $6 to $10 billion. They would increase the number of lanes in each direction from the current four, to five or six. They would take years to complete. Metro has debated whether to add features such as a truck bypass lane or a freight corridor, and a dedicated lane to zero-emission vehicles.

The plan has drawn vocal and ongoing opposition from residents in the surrounding communities. Metro officials argue the plan is necessary to ease congestion due to an increasing population and the crumbling infrastructure.

The 710 Freeway sees thousands of trucks a day carrying cargo from the San Pedro Bay ports. Metro estimates that by 2035, the number of daily truck trips will increase to 55,000 per day.

Environmental studies of the project began 10 years ago. Four proposals were developed in 2012 and then reworked to address concerns raised by the Coalition for Environmental Health and Justice, among other considerations. The proposals includes provisions for encouraging the use of clean technology trucks, but some board members believe more needs to be done.

Metro has also been at the center of a separate long-running debate over whether to extend the 710 Freeway from Valley Boulevard in Alhambra — where it currently dead-ends- north to the 210 Freeway in Pasadena. Decades of delays and legal challenges have derailed the freeway extension. In 2016, Caltrans began selling off homes it had bought decades ago in anticipation of the extension. Metro has proposed constructing an underground tunnel that would link the 710 to the 210.

Thursday’s board meeting took place at the MTA building in downtown L.A.

Man Arrested In Wife’s Fatal Fall From Alhambra Parking Garage

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) – A woman fell to her death from a multi-story parking garage in Alhambra Thursday, and a man claiming to be her husband was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Officers went to 26 N. First St. shortly after 1 a.m. after receiving a call from a someone “who reported that his wife fell from the top level of the public parking structure,” Alhambra police Sgt. Steven Carr said.

Hui Li, 29, of Alhambra, died at the scene, according to the coroner’s office.

“The self-identified husband, 55-year-old Alhambra resident Russell Errett, cooperated with Alhambra police detectives who questioned him about the incident,” Carr said.

Russell Errett was arrested around 6:15 a.m. on suspicion of murder. He was being held on $1 million bail.

Police were working to verify if — as the suspect claimed — Errett and Li were married, Carr said.

According to police, Errett told police the couple’s 3-year-old daughter was in a car in the garage at the time the woman fell to her death. The child was found unharmed, police said.

Authorities planned to check for surveillance footage that may have captured the incident. Thursday afternoon, detectives were in the process of serving a search warrant at the suspect’s home, Carr said.

Alhambra Carjacking Suspect Shot By Officers After Trying To Run Them Down

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) – A 29-year-old carjacking suspect was shot and wounded early Saturday morning by Alhambra police officers after he tried to run them down, authorities say.

Just after midnight, a carjacking occurred in the 100 block of East Beacon Street. The suspect had simulated a handgun and stole the woman’s white sedan, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Joana Warren. The sheriff’s department is investigating the shooting.

At 12:23 a.m., Alhambra police officers received a call directing them to the 700 block of West Valley Boulevard, where a male driving a white sedan was ramming vehicles in the parking lot, Warren said.

Upon the officers’ arrival into the parking lot, the suspect attempted to strike the officers with the white sedan by accelerating and then driving directly at them, which is when the officer-involved shooting occurred, Warren said.

The suspect was struck once by the gunfire and taken to a local hospital where he is expected to survive, Warren said.

Investigators confirmed that the officer-involved shooting suspect was the same suspect involved in the carjacking and that the white sedan he used to attempt to strike arriving officers was the same car stolen during the carjacking, according to Warren.

The victim of the carjacking was not injured.

The suspect has not been identified.

Police Search Ruins Homecoming At HS In Alhambra, Locks Down School For 2nd Time That Day

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA) — A Southland high school’s homecoming game was shut down Friday night when police went on a search for burglary suspects in the area, putting the campus on lockdown for the second time that day.

Right in the middle of the game between the home team Mark Keppel High School Aztecs and the San Gabriel High Matadors, police put the school on lockdown as they searched the area following a report of a burglary and possible armed men.

Concerned parents flocked to the school to pick up their children, some of whom were shook and crying.

Police put one man in custody, but it was not clear whether he was one of the suspects being sought.

One home in the area was found to have been broken into by night’s end.

It was the second time Friday that the school was put on lockdown. Earlier in the day, police chased a stolen vehicle suspect and apprehended him not far from the school.

“For the second time today; it’s ridiculous,” said one concerned parent.

It was not clear whether the game would be rescheduled, but the homecoming dance will go on as scheduled Saturday.

Investigators Seek Man Who Gunned Down Alhambra Motel Clerk

MONTEREY PARK (CBSLA.com) – Detectives are asking for the public’s help in locating a male suspect in the shooting death of a 45-year-old motel clerk during an attempted robbery in Alhambra last month.

Xiuxia “Michelle” Chen was shot and killed June 2 while working the front desk of the Ambassador Inn at 2720 Valley Blvd.

At about 11 p.m., a man entered the motel, aimed a handgun at her and demanded cash. He then reached over the counter and shot her once in the chest before fleeing on foot, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Chen, a wife and mother of two, died at the scene.

At a news conference Tuesday in Monterey Park, the sheriff’s department released surveillance video and audio of the suspect. He can be heard yelling, “Do you want to die?”

Chen responds to the suspect, “Excuse me, I do not have any money for you.”

Following the shooting, a second camera shows the suspect leaving through the lobby of the motel, with a gun and black bag in hand. Police said the suspect fled without taking any cash.

Authorities are also looking for a woman who they say spoke to Chen at the counter just moments before the suspect entered and shot her. They believe the woman, described as a person of interest, was seen on surveillance video walking past the gunman outside the motel as he entered to commit the crime.

“Why did you have to go so far, so far as to take away an amazing woman from this world?” Armando Escando Jr., Chen’s son, told reporters at the news conference.

Escando Jr. was overseas serving in the Navy at the time of his mother’s death.

“All I want is justice for my loving wife,” said Armando Escandor, Chen’s husband of 23 years.

Chen had worked at the Ambassador for six years at the time of the shooting.

LASD also announced a $20,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. The reward is being sponsored by the Alhambra City Council and Chen’s husband’s employer.

Woman, 45, Shot To Death During Attempted Robbery At Alhambra Motel

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a 45-year-old motel clerk was shot to death during an attempted robbery in Alhambra.

The incident unfolded just before 11 p.m. Friday at the Ambassador Inn in the 2700 block of Valley Boulevard.

It was there that detectives learned that police responded to a call of a “person down.”

When they arrived, they learned that the victim was working behind the counter when a male suspect attempted to rob her at gunpoint.

Police said during the commission of the robbery, the victim was shot in the torso at least once.

Xiuxia Chen, also known as Michelle Chen, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect fled.

On Saturday, CBS 2’s Greg Mills spoken to Chen’s distraught husband and daughter.

“It’s hard, devastating,” said Armando Escandor, Chen’s husband of 23 years. “Even for my daughter. We just want to be strong, strong because we don’t have any family or relatives here.”

The couple had two children. Their son is overseas serving in the Navy.

“Just the three of us now,” said Escandor,”Before we were four. They took one of my …”

He was too emotional to continue the sentence. Daughter Analisa, 12, is also understandably feeling the loss deeply.

“It’s devastating to me because I only got to spend a limited amount of time with her in my life,” she said.

Chen worked at the Ambassador for six years. It’s a place where people sometimes stay for weeks or months at a time.

Mills spoke to one guest who was emotionally wrecked on hearing the news of the murder. He didn’t want his face shown.

“Tears. Tears. When someone like this is taken away like this, it’s wrong,” said the man.

“She was extremely kind to everybody,” said one woman.

Escandor arrived to pick up his wife at 11:30 p.m. and said he saw police and crime scene tape and didn’t know what was going on. After waiting for several hours, he learned his wife had been shot to death.

Bearded Dragon Found On Alhambra Street

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA.com) – Police are looking for the owners of a bearded dragon, a distinctive-looking lizard, that was found Saturday underneath a bus bench in Alhambra.

The reptile was found about 7 a.m. in the area of Main Street and Garfield Avenue, said Alhambra police Cmdr. Jennifer Wiese.

“It’s obviously somebody’s pet. There’s no way it’s been living on the street,” Wiese said.

Anyone who might know the lizard’s owner was asked to call the city’s Animal Control Department at 562-940-6898.

Suspect Arrested In South Pasadena Child Luring Case

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA.com) – A man accused of trying to lure a girl into his car in South Pasadena was arrested Thursday in neighboring Alhambra.

Edwin Linares, 43, of Alhambra was taken into custody at about 7 a.m. by a South Pasadena officer who was in Alhambra conducting an investigation and who recognized the car he was driving, the South Pasadena Police Department reported.

On Wednesday afternoon, Linares asked a girl walking on a South Pasadena street if she needed a ride and she took a picture of his car, police said.

The girl, whose age was not released, was walking in front of South Pasadena Middle School at 1600 Oak St. at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said, when she noticed a man driving a red Toyota Corolla slowly near her.

He asked her if she needed a ride. After she refused, he asked her again. She pulled out her cell phone and snapped a picture of his vehicle as he fled east on Oak Street, police said.

The girl described the man as Hispanic, about 30 to 35 years old with a thin build, medium complexion, black wavy hair and a goatee. On Thursday, a South Pasadena officer saw the car, pulled it over and arrested Linares.

“I’m glad to hear from her remarks that she was actually smart to both, one, take a photo of the license plate, two, run way as fast as she can, and three, get to her home safely,” classmate Minori Milly told CBS2 Thursday.

Police said Linares was also wanted on unrelated charges of suspicion of child molestation. He is accused of having a sexual relationship with a minor, police said. The details of that case were not confirmed.

Police: More Than $30K In Undelivered Packages Found At Driver’s Home

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA.com) — A delivery driver faces charges of grand theft after police say they found thousands of dollars worth of undelivered merchandise at his home in East Los Angeles.

Eden Sergio Ortega, 37, was arrested Tuesday at his home in the 5300 block of Verona Street in Los Angeles, where detectives found iPhones, laptops, tablets, high-end women’s shoes, toys and three brand new large screen TVs that were still in their original packaging, Alhambra police Sgt. Jerry Johnson said.

Several of the stolen items were being used by Ortega and his family, Johnson said, but others were stored in a closet in their original packaging. The items recovered during the search warrant have a retail value in excess of $30,000, police said.

More than 70 pieces of evidence and merchandise, along with shipping boxes and labels listing the information of several Alhambra residents as intended buyers were found in the home, were apparently never delivered by Ortega, who worked as a delivery driver, police said.

The stolen packages were online orders from companies like Best Buy, Sephora, UGG and Nordstrom’s. Detectives believed the thefts started about two years ago and ramped up in late 2016. Detectives identified Ortega as the suspect after cross-referencing internal documents between various companies and receiving an anonymous tip.

Ortega, who posted $20,000 bail Wednesday, is scheduled to make his next court appearance on March 22. Johnson said Ortega’s employment status is not known.

The shipping company Ortega worked for “is well aware of the evidence we found, his role in the crimes and that he was arrested,” Johnson said, but added the company asked that their name not be released.

Alhambra Woman Killed In Backyard, Man Arrested For Trespassing

ALHAMBRA (CBSLA.com) — A 25-year-old man has been arrested on charges of trespassing at the home where an Alhambra woman was found killed Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, 78-year-old Moon Cheung was killed in the backyard of a condo in the 1800 block of West Garvey Avenue at approximately 12:42 p.m. Alhambra police responded to a 911 call to find Cheung with blunt force trauma to her upper torso. Authorities believe she may have been gardening on her patio at the time of the killing.

Twenty-five-year-old Milton Chavez was arrested several hours later Wednesday on accusations he trespassed at Cheung’s home. Alhambra police and sheriff’s detectives are conducting a homicide investigation into Cheung’s death.

According to the sheriff’s department, a Hispanic man knocked on the victim’s door at about 1 p.m. Authorities told CBS2 that the victim’s daughter, who was cooking at the time, answered the door. The man told her that Cheung was laying on the ground in the backyard. When Cheung’s daughter went outside to check on his claim, the suspect entered the home, shut the door and locked it, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. The daughter then called 911.

Alhambra police officers responded and entered the home, but were unable to find the trespassing suspect. A few hours later, Alhambra police received a call about a suspicious man in a shed a short distance from the home who matched the description of the suspect. Chavez was caught and arrested for trespassing.

At the time of his capture, Chavez was in possession of an item that belonged to the victim, the sheriff’s department said.

The victim’s family has said they do not know Chavez.
