It’s nearly cherry season. Tart, tangy and sweet, this ever-popular flavorful fruit has collected a crowd of fans.

But should you think twice about biting into cherries, our of concern for your smile and teeth?

Let’s begin by bringing up the benefits.

“Cherries are a good source of vitamin C, potassium, fiber, and other nutrients that your body needs to function optimally.” They are also high in “antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, which may reduce chronic disease risk and promote overall health.”

Great news, right? Plus, they are delicious and easy to incorporate into a variety of recipes. (Though they are just as tasty on their own.)

Two words of warning—avoid biting down on pits as this can lead to a dental emergency and you might want to follow up your noshing session with a big glass of water.

And, just as importantly, don’t rush to the sink for a tooth brushing session right away afterward, as you may damage softened enamel. Wait at least half an hour.

What is the difference between TMD, TMJ and bruxism?

If you have ever experienced any jaw pain, you have probably come across the terms TMD, TMJ and bruxism. Yet what do they really mean!?

TMD is a universal abbreviation for temporomandibular joint dysfunction or disorder. Mistakenly, and not to be confused with, TMJ has also been used interchangeably. However, there is an evident difference between them which will be explained.

TMD describes a range of painful and dysfunctional jaw conditions. This can involve the jaw joint, known as the temporomandibular joint, the surrounding muscles and nerves that innervate it.

TMJ, which stands for temporomandibular joint, describes the jaw joint itself. This joint is formed by the mandible bone (lower jawbone) joining with the temporal bone of the skull on both sides. Each joint has a cartilage disc between the bones, acting like a shock absorber and preventing them from damaging during function. The jaw joint is then surrounded by a capsule which encloses it, and performs movements required for eating, speaking and facial expression.

Individuals with TMD may experience an array of symptoms including:

Headaches
Myofascial pain
Difficulty or discomfort when opening and closing the jaw
Pain radiating to the neck, shoulders and ears
Sensitive and chipped teeth
Worn teeth
Jaw locking
Jaw clicking

The most common indication of TMD are headaches, due to the repeated use of the jaw muscles during tooth clenching and grinding. This is known as ‘bruxism’.

Bruxism mainly occurs overnight whilst sleeping, although it is quite common to take place during the day. Common causes include stress, certain medications, alcohol and drugs use, airway problems and hereditary and neurological disorders. If left untreated, bruxism can cause long term damage to the teeth, jaw joint and surrounding muscles.

How safe are dental x-rays

Dental X-rays are an essential part of dental practice and are performed by dentists if deemed appropriate. They are necessary for the diagnosis and treatment planning of dental disease and conditions, as many cannot be accurately assessed by visual examination only. For example, X-rays are required to determine any areas of decay in-between the teeth, the amount of alveolar bone present and any suspicious lesions in the jaw or tooth. The most common types of dental X-rays are bitewing radiographs, intraoral periapical radiographs and an orthopantomogram (OPG).

There is a known link between the exposed levels of radiation and its increased cancer risk. It is therefore understandable to question if dental x-rays pose a risk to our health.

Fortunately, due to the development of digital techniques, the radiation dose of dental X-rays has been significantly reduced over time. In fact, dental X-rays expose patients to a relatively low dose of radiation.

Research suggests that there is a threshold level for radiation, and provided you stay underneath that level, all x-rays are safe. According to the Australian Government, those who work with radiation can be exposed to a maximum yearly dose of 50.0 mSv.

A single digital x-ray has a dose of only 0.02 mSv, making it safe to say that you can have many of these per year, whilst remaining under the limit.

What You Should Know About Crowns

Crowns come up a lot when talking about dentistry, even in casual conversations. But do you actually know what they are and how they function?

To put it simply, a crown is basically a cap for a damaged tooth. They are frequently recommended as treatment for large fillings (for a cavity), weakened or cracked teeth.

There are many types and variations, including temporary crowns that are used for emergencies, until a more permanent solution can be explored. Possible crown materials include porcelain, zirconia and metal.

Does Mouthwash Expire?

Mouthwash has its place in a well-rounded, thorough oral health maintenance routine. But, just like replacing your toothbrush every 3–4 months, sometimes you have to think about numbers and dates when it comes to keeping your smile happy.

So, to answer the key question, yes, mouthwash does expire.

“Usually, mouthwash is good for a maximum of 2 to 3 years from the manufacture date. Most mouthwash contains alcohol or another astringent, which starts to dissolve after 2 or 3 years and essentially waters down the liquid. This may encourage bacteria growth, which makes expired mouthwash potentially unsafe to use.”

Now, you probably don’t have a hard time making sure that the bottle of the mouthwash on your countertop or in your bathroom vanity is well within date. But emergency, tucked away or “just in case” mouthwash reserves in purses, desk drawers or glove compartments can slip under the radar.

What’s the big deal about squishing with expired mouthwash? It may contain bacteria and rancid ingredients, making it unsafe for use.

When in doubt, buy a new one. You don’t want to take any risks.

In the wake of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, employment has been dubbed the “Great Resignation”. Many health-sector employees, taking advantage of the wide-scale skills shortages that followed an unprecedented increase in consumer demand, negotiated better work conditions and salaries with their employers. Some employees chose to switch jobs altogether, many more than once.

Here are 7 pitfalls to consider before you make the switch.

1. Danger money

The health-care practices offering pay well above market rates may be offering you “danger money”. Some practices struggle to retain staff for a variety of reasons, so are forced to pay above-market sums simply to attract staff. Reasons may include poor HR practices, infection control and workplace culture, to name but a few. As a guide look for other long-serving current employees of the business in similar roles.

2. Cat-fished job descriptions

You may sign off on a job description you’re comfortable with, only to discover the new role comes with a series of tasks and expectations that are not worth the hours of unsupported physical and mental stress that comes with the pay increase. Be very clear on your proposed job description – not only in what it “includes” but also in what it excludes.

3. Could this be your very last pay rise?

The practices paying danger money to simply secure your services may struggle to offer another pay rise for a very long time. Apart from negotiating your new pay rate, also negotiate your next pay rise date and the approximate quantum of that rise if you meet the reasonable expectations set down for you in your new role.

4. The begrudging new boss or manager

Some practice owners and managers securing your services on danger money may “begrudge” the money they are paying you. Set to plague your relationship may be never-ending unrealistic and shifting expectations on your performance, hours of work, and additional duties.

5. Overtime denial

Your overtime hours may be disregarded in your new workplace. There may be expectations on you to start early, finish late and work through part of your lunch breaks, almost always unpaid. An expectation to work an additional 15 minutes at either end of the day and 15 mins into your lunch break will erode over 11% off your hourly rate on a standard 38-hours-per-week roster. Some businesses may also avoid paying overtime rates for weekend work and long shifts.

6. Fluctuating work hours

Whilst your minimum weekly hours are safe in good economic conditions, any downturn in business revenue or gaps in the appointment books may lead to a reduction of your weekly hours. Unwanted obligatory late starts and early finishes can eat heavily into your pay packet.

7. The dead-end move

Some roles within the health sector are a stepping stone to more learning and career development; others are dead-end roles with no career pathways. Carefully consider the pros and cons of choosing near-term financial upsides over career progression within your business and industry as a whole.

2. Ignoring The Impact Stress Has On Their Oral Health

Stress is nothing to scoff at and it can certainly play a part in unknowingly grinding your teeth, encouraging mindless munching and decreasing how much saliva you produce. Try to be proactive about stress management strategies and don’t be afraid to voice concerns about this to your dental team.

3. Being Flippant About Oral Health Guidelines

1. It can cause you to (unknowingly) grind your teeth.

It is possible that you are already grinding your teeth, even if you don’t realize you are doing it!

2. It can propel you to seek solace in mindless munching.

This is, of course, not the case for everyone, but many people tend to eat poorly, or even just more than they should when they are dealing with difficult situations. Chowing down outside of mealtimes, in general, can be bad for your teeth.

Same goes for consuming alcohol or smoking. Find a better way to remain relaxed, such as meditation or exercise.

3. It can lead to a decrease in saliva production.

A little unsettling to think about, but very important to know. Dry mouth opens up a whole new world of potential problems!

Keeping your smile safe in stressful situations is very doable, as long as you are proactive about your approach.

When Should Kids Start Flossing?

While many parents and caregivers have gone above and beyond to instill fantastic brushing habits in their little ones, flossing is often overlooked. One reason might just be the fact that it can be difficult to determine when a young child should start flossing his or her tiny teeth!

We will spare you yet another lecture on why flossing properly is such a vital part of the overall oral health maintenance package and will instead shed some light on introducing this to your kid(s) at the right time.

The general consensus seems to be that you should begin flossing their pearly whites as soon as they have two teeth that touch. As babies grow teeth at different rates, the timeline for when this can happen can vary wildly. Seeing as you should schedule your baby’s first appointment within six months of their first tooth making its debut (or by their first birthday, whichever comes first), it is entirely possible that a dentist has already broached the subject.

You will likely already be paying attention to their mouth, tongue and gums during the “teething” stage, so you will have front-row seats to this exciting development!

Once you have determined that the time has come to introduce flossing, you can incorporate this into your child’s existing dental routine. If it is difficult to get the job done using traditional floss, consider using a floss pick instead.

Be patient and consistent. Explain exactly what you are doing and why. (And be sure to practice what you preach!)

Try adding it to your omelet, along with a well-chosen cheese, for a smile-boosting beginning to your day.

2. Worst: Sugary-Packed Cereals

While cereal has arguably been the go-to breakfast food for decades, it’s extremely important to be picky about which brand or type you’re digging into.
