How to talk with your kids about the Kansas City shooting

Many of those injured in the shooting in Kansas City near a Super Bowl celebration on Wednesday were children and this is sure to have an impact on them and others across the country. So, what can parents do?

“Different kids are built differently. Some children might have an immediate response. Some children might have a delayed response.”

Dr. Rob Keder, a pediatrician with Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, says a child’s age plays a big role in the trauma they might face after Wednesday’s shooting.

“Younger children might make more magical connections and think they may have caused something whereas older children might have more typical anxiety and worry,” he said.

He says the whiplash of going from a cheerful celebration to a scary turn of events will cause confusion and parents should approach conversations delicately with the very young.

“The world can be a really scary place, and what we want to do is find that sweet spot of how much do you need to know right now and how much is OK to know later,” he said.

Teenagers, Dr. Keder says, may know more than parents thanks to smartphones and social media. He suggests lending an ear to understand through their eyes.

“If things sound a little bit confusing, it’s an opportunity to talk about how sometimes when news is breaking, we’re getting news, but we don’t have the complete story yet,” he said.

Dr. Keder says for parents themselves, don’t be afraid to take a deep breath and process what’s going on yourself before talking with your child.

More snow expected in Connecticut tonight – timing out what to expect

We will have lots of morning sunshine on Thursday and temperatures in the 30s, then clouds will increase this afternoon and more snow is on the way.

An “Alberta Clipper” will make its way to Connecticut after sunset and a few periods of light snow are likely this evening.

A coating to two inches of fluffy snow is possible.

One injured in Waterbury crash

One person has been taken to a hospital after a crash in Waterbury early Thursday morning.

The crash happened around 4:14 a.m. in the area of Lakewood Road and North Main Street in Waterbury and fire officials said one person was trapped and had to be extricated from the vehicle.

The patient was taken to Waterbury Hospital.

No information was available on the person’s condition.

The roof of the vehicle was next to the vehicle and fire officials said it was removed to extricate the injured person.

The reconstruction unit responded to the scene. The road is closed as police investigate.

Nathan Carman focus of upcoming Netflix documentary

A man originally from Connecticut who is accused in a pair of murders is set to become the subject of an upcoming Netflix documentary.

The video streaming service announced earlier this month that they are going to take an in-depth look into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of two of Nathan Carman’s family members, and other aspects related to the investigations.

Netflix says they will be interviewing family, friends, and investigators associated with the cases, with Yon Motskin, whose work includes the Netflix series ‘Encounters’, slated to direct.

Carman was accused of killing his mother on the high seas off the coast of Rhode Island in 2016 while the two were on a fishing trip. Her body was never recovered and she was later presumed dead.

Carman is also accused in the shooting death of his grandfather, John Chakalos, who was shot in the head while he was asleep at his home in Windsor in 2013. Chakalos was a wealthy real estate developer.

Investigators believe it was all part of a bigger plan to get his hands on money and property from his grandfather’s estate and family trusts.

During a prior court hearing in which Carman’s aunts were suing him to try to prevent him from collecting a multi-million dollar inheritance, Carman denied killing his mother and grandfather.

Carman was found deceased while in police custody back in the summer of 2023 before his federal trial could begin. An autopsy showed that his death was not considered suspicious.

Netflix did not say when they expect the project to be released.

In fact, the “I’m Real” singer revealed that the Air director was a huge help when making her “This Is Me… Now: A Love Story” musical, which premieres on Amazon Prime Video on Feb. 16.

“He definitely helped me through the process,” she exclusively told Will Marfuggi during a Feb. 14 episode of E! News. “It was the first time I was making something in this way.”

And when the finished product arrived, Affleck made sure to live it up with the “Marry Me” actress, whom he married in 2022.

“At the end of it he was like, ‘Oh my god, you made a film,'” she said. “‘Congratulations. And it’s really good. I’m really proud of you.'”

The Oscar winner’s support didn’t end there, either. At the Feb. 13 premiere of the film, he made sure to take photos of Jen on his phone as she posted on the red carpet and was delighted to celebrate his wife’s new foray into filmmaking.

As for the “Let’s Get Loud” singer, who stunned at the premiere in a strapless dress with a sheer black skirt, she was equally proud of what she created, telling E! News that although “it’s hard to define,” the musical “happened very organically.”

“I wanted to just write music,” she explained, “and from that it was like, ‘Well this whole story is not told here. There’s more to tell.'”

Covering more than “twenty years” of her life in her songwriting, The “Hustlers” star said she soon realized, “Wow, this is not really a fairytale. There’s something more to this story than what people think.”

The singer even poked fun at the so called “fairytale” thinking in the music video for the first single off her new album, “Can’t Get Enough,” which saw the 54-year-old reference her four marriages in a cheeky way.

As for her new musical hitting Broadway? Lopez told E! News it’s even something she could see “on stage for sure.” Although that’s still a ways off from that, adding, “We’ll see.”

A Kansas City radio DJ was killed Wednesday in a shooting near the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade, according to the radio station and her sister.

In a statement on its Facebook page, KKFI confirmed the death of DJ Lisa Lopez-Galvan, co-host of “Taste of Tejano.”

“It is with sincere sadness and an extremely heavy and broken heart that we let our community know that KKFI DJ Lisa Lopez, host of Taste of Tejano lost her life today in the shooting at the KC Chiefs’ rally. Our hearts and prayers are with her family,” the statement read.

Her sister Carmen Lopez Murguia also confirmed the death to NBC News.

Kansas City Police has not publicly identified any of the victims.

Lopez-Galvan, whose DJ name was “Lisa G,” began co-hosting “Taste of Tejano” in March 2022, spinning records on Tuesdays from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., according to her bio on the station’s website. For Lopez-Galvan, music was “life and a source of happiness,” her bio said, and she also worked as a DJ for private parties and events for more than 15 years, playing to bilingual crowds.

Her fellow “Taste of Tejano” co-host Tommy Andrade shared his last words to Lopez-Galvan in social media post, writing that he told “Be careful and have fun! I’ll see you next Tuesday!”

Looking back at recent incidents of violence at championship parades

Friend Rosa Izurieta told The Associated Press that Lopez-Galvan attended the parade with her husband and her adult son, a die-hard Kansas City sports fan who also was shot.

“She’s the type of person who would jump in front of a bullet for anybody — that would be Lisa,” Izurieta said.

At least 21 people, including 11 children between the ages of 6 and 15, were hit by gunfire in Wednesday shooting, which unfolded at the end of the Chiefs’ rally to celebrate the team’s Super Bowl win, authorities said. Thousands of fans were gathered downtown when shots rang out and terrified paradegoers ran for cover at yet another high-profile public event in the U.S. marred by gun violence.

Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said at a news conference Wednesday evening that three people had been taken into custody and firearms were recovered. She said police were still piecing together what happened and did not release details about those who were detained or a possible motive.

“I’m angry at what happened today. The people who came to this celebration should expect a safe environment.” Graves said.

Kansas City has long struggled with gun violence, and in 2020 it was among nine cities targeted by the U.S. Justice Department in an effort to crack down on violent crime. In 2023 the city matched a record with 182 homicides, most of which involved guns.

Defense scores a victory during a day full of motions for Day 21 of Troconis Trial

A win for Michelle Troconis’ defense Wednesday following a motion filed to exclude testimony from Connecticut’s Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. James Gill.

“He didn’t look at anything that required his expertise so anyone could come to the same conclusion,” defense attorney Jon Schoenhorn said outside court Wednesday.

The state planned to have Dr. Gill testify about his determination that Jennifer Dulos was likely dead based on information he had been given from investigators on the case. It’s largely the same evidence jurors have already seen during the first four weeks of the trial, including the bloody clothing pulled from Albany Avenue in Hartford, forensic evidence such as DNA, and photographs taken from Jennifer Dulos’ garage.

In August of 2019, Dr. Gill determined based on the evidence, that Jennifer Dulos sustained injuries that were “non-survivable” without medical intervention.

But because he made that determination based on evidence the jury has also been presented, and a body was never recovered for him to conduct an autopsy on, Judge Kevin Randolph ruled in favor of the defense’s motion.

“The jury has heard more than Dr. Gill could testify to. The motion is granted,” Randolph said.

That decision followed a day of quick testimony, including new surveillance footage of Fotis Dulos dropping off and picking up Pawel Gumienny’s Toyota Tacoma from a car wash and detail in Avon.

The manager described various cleaning agents used in the detailing process, including shampoo and all-purpose cleaners. Video surveillance from inside the business showed Fotis Dulos paying cash for the service.

According to court documents, he left no name for the car, and listed the wrong model Toyota and left Michelle Troconis’ phone number as the number to call when the detailing was complete.

“A customer didn’t provide a name?” asked Attorney Michelle Manning. “Correct,” said manager Cederic Candiotti.

The jury also saw new surveillance footage from a home on Weed Street in New Canaan. The footage showed a person, investigators believe to be Fotis Dulos, riding a bicycle in the direction of Jennifer Dulos’ home the morning she disappeared. A little while later, the same camera picks up what investigators believe to be Jennifer Dulos’ Chevy Suburban headed back in the opposite direction, toward Lapham Road, where her Suburban was ultimately found later that evening.

Before the trial started Wednesday, there were two motions that also offered insight into what else the state intends to present before they rest their case. One is testimony from another lawyer deeply involved in the divorce proceedings between Jennifer and Fotis Dulos.

The judge also ruled cell phone data seized from AT&T can be brought into the trial after the state submitted an appropriate warrant for the data back at the end of 2023. Defense attorney Jon Schoenhorn attempted to have that evidence suppressed, but the judge decided to deny that motion.

Quick-moving system expected to bring more snow to Connecticut Thursday night

Just after digging out from Tuesday’s storm, another system will bring some more snow to Connecticut Thursday night.

Clouds will increase through the day Thursday and temperatures will climb into the upper 30s.

An “Alberta Clipper” will move across the Great Lakes before making its way to Connecticut after sunset Thursday.

The snow is only expected to last for a few hours. Most of the state will see a coating up to two inches of snow before the system moves out late Thursday night.

As it pulls away, winds will pick up into Friday morning.

1 dead, 21 hurt in shooting near Chiefs' Super Bowl celebration

At least 22 people were struck by gunfire after shots rang out near Kansas City’s Union Station at the conclusion of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade and rally, with one person having succumbed to their injuries, according to officials.

According to the latest updates from fire officials, one person was killed and three others are in critical condition after the shooting, which occurred near the scene of the Chiefs’ rally near Union Station.

According to Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves, the shooting occurred at the conclusion of the rally.

“I’m angry at what happened today,” she said. “The people who came to this celebration should expect a safe environment. We had over 800 law enforcement officers, Kansas City and other agencies, at the location to keep everyone safe. Because of bad actors, which were very few, this tragedy occurred, even in the presence of uniformed law enforcement officers.”

There were at least 22 individuals who were injured, but police do not have an exact number of victims at this time.

According to the Associated Press, eight of the 22 individuals wounded are children, with their ages currently unknown.

The person killed was confirmed by her employer to be Lisa Lopez, a DJ for Kansas City’s KKFI radio station.

“This senseless act has taken a beautiful person from her family and this KC Community,” the station said in a statement.

Kansas City police have yet to identify Lopez as the victim.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lewis said that all players, coaches and staff for the Chiefs were accounted for after the shooting. He told media that the White House offered federal assistance, as did other responding agencies, including the FBI.

According to officials, the Chiefs’ celebration had just wrapped up when gunfire erupted near a parking garage to the west of the station, leaving paradegoers scrambling for cover.

Officials with the fire department say that eight people were in critical condition, seven individuals sustained life-threatening injuries and six others sustained minor injuries.

Three suspects were taken into custody, according to Kansas City police, but the investigation remains ongoing.

A motive has not been determined at this time.

Officers coordinated to evacuate individuals from the area and from inside Union Station following the shooting. Multiple calls went out on loudspeakers asking paradegoers to leave the area, according to NBC News.

Former president of Norwich Police Benevolent Association accused of stealing funds

The former president of the Norwich Police Benevolent Association is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the organization and has been arrested.

Ryan O’Connell, 42, of Norwich, is suspected of stealing more than $3,000 from the Norwich Police Benevolent Association, according to the arrest warrant.

The investigation started when the association learned just days before Christmas in 2021 that it didn’t have enough money in its account to pay for holiday meals for officers, according to the arrest warrant.

In January 2022, the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney asked the state police Central District Major Crime Squad.

On Jan. 4, 2022, O’Connell admitted to using the Norwich Police Benevolent Association account on occasion for personal reasons, the warrant says. The initial estimate of the missing funds was more than $1,000.

O’Connell resigned from his position with the association on Jan. 6, 2022.

After going through financial documents, the association’s executive committee members identified 92 fraudulent transactions totaling $3,168.92 between March 22, 2019 and Dec. 27, 2021, the warrant states.

O’Connell has been charged with larceny in the third degree.

Norwich police said the 16-year veteran has been placed on administrative leave and an internal investigation is underway.

O’Connell was working as a community resource officer in the patrol division, according to the warrant.

He turned himself in to police on Feb. 12, after learning of the warrant for his arrest, state police said.

He was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to be arraigned at Norwich Superior Court on Feb. 27.

Connecticut Flower & Garden Show comes to Hartford next week

The ground is covered in snow, but the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford is going to look like spring during the 42nd Connecticut Flower & Garden Show.

It will run from Thursday, Feb. 22 through Sunday, Feb. 25 and the theme is “Bursting Into Spring.”

“Over 80 hours of seminars and demonstrations will be presented by more than 20 impressive horticulturalists, landscapers, and industry professionals, and all are free with admission,” Kristie Gonsalves, president of North East Expos, said in a statement.

Discounted tickets: $17 for adults and seniors are on sale at www.CTFlowerShow.com and can be purchased online through the final day of the show.

Tickets at the door will be $20 for adults and seniors, $5 for children 5 to 12 and free for children under the age of 5.

Parking in the Connecticut Convention Center Garage is $9 for all day or $3 for the first hour and $2 each additional hour.

On Thursday and Friday only, free parking and a shuttle will be available at Propark South Surface Lot, 63-89 Capitol Ave. (and Hudson Street) in Hartford, which is several blocks south of the convention center.

Yale staff assaulted in daylight robbery: police

A Yale staff member was assaulted in a daylight robbery last Wednesday.

The robbery happened at 3:10 p.m. when the staff member was walking out of a building at 135 College Street.

A group of teenagers attacked the staff member and made off with his laptop, fleeing the scene towards Cedar Street, according to Yale police.

No weapons were used, police said.

Police arrested a number of those teens who were believed to have participated in the robbery, according to Chief Anthony Campbell of Yale Public Safety.

The staff member was evaluated for injuries.

Police ask that anyone with information about the robbery contact the Yale Police at 203-432-4400 or send anonymous tips through the LiveSafe app.

The investigation is ongoing.

Valentine's Day rush underway at Hartford florist

There was a line out the door at House of Flora in Hartford for the majority of Valentine’s Day as people stopped in to buy balloons, teddy bears and flowers for their loved ones.

“Spur of the moment, just to grab something for my children. I have a 4-year-old, a soon-to-be 6-year-old and my husband, so wanted to get something unique for them to come home to,” said Silia Sahacic, from West Hartford.

The staff at House of Flora individually wrapped glitter roses for Sahacic’s children.

“Just for them to feel the extra love. And while they’re young to experience all the fond memories of exchanging Valentine’s, getting little gifts, flowers, chocolates and all the things,” Sahacic said.

But it was mostly men packing the store, shopping for the special person in their life.

“My plan for today was to get my wife some roses. We’ve been married for 30 years. And as a surprise to her,” said Henley Solomon, from Bloomfield.

Solomon planned to surprise his wife at work. He said after 30 years of marriage he would marry her again in a heartbeat.

“It’s awesome time to celebrate the one you love, you know, especially, you know, children, and it’s an awesome time,” said Solomon.

JCPenney at Crystal Mall to close

The JCPenney store at the Crystal Mall in Waterford will be closing this spring.

The company said the store will close by May 25.

“The decision to close a store is never an easy one. We are grateful to our dedicated associates and the loyal customers who have shopped at our Waterford location,” the company said in a statement.

“We continue to work to make every dollar count for America’s diverse, working families and welcome them to shop at our other JCPenney stores in the area and at JCPenney.com,” the statement goes on to say.

There are five other JCPenney stores in the state.

They are located in Danbury, Farmington, Manchester, Trumbull and Waterbury.

Multi-vehicle crash caused lane closures, delays on I-84 West in East Hartford

A multi-vehicle crash closed a portion of Interstate 84 West in East Hartford on Wednesday morning.

CTRoads said the two right lanes of the highway were closed between exits 58 and 57. The highway has since reopened.

It’s unclear exactly how many vehicles were involved in the crash.

State police said injuries were reported but the extent was unknown.

On Wednesday, many Christians will show up to work with ashes smudged on their foreheads. Many more will head to church on their lunch break or after work to receive a cross of ashes on their face.

This year, Ash Wednesday — a solemn day of fasting and reflection to mark the start of Christianity’s most penitent season — falls on Valentine’s Day, the fixed annual celebration of love and friendship, marked by couples, flowers and candy — and critics who deride its commercialization.

But what exactly is the purpose of the centuries-old Christian tradition?

What is Ash Wednesday?

In the Christian tradition, Ash Wednesday marks the start of the holy season of Lent, a time for reflection and repentance in preparation for the celebration of Easter.

Christians from many denominations recognize the holy season for 40 days leading up to Easter. For centuries, Christians have received a sign of the cross with ashes on their forehead at the beginning of that season as a reminder of mortal failings and an invitation to receive God’s forgiveness. The tradition has its origins in the Old Testament where sinners performed acts of public penance.

The use of ashes is to remind parishioners of their mortality. During Ash Wednesday service, the phrase, “Remember, man, that you are dust and to dust you shall return,” from the Book of Genesis is traditionally employed.

Rev. Gregory Wilson, pastor at St. Mary’s Help of Christians Catholic church in Aiken, South Carolina, offers believers two things to consider when observing Ash Wednesday: prayer and sacrifice.

“Prayer,” Wilson said, “purifies intentions and relates everything back to God. Fasting detaches people from comfort and themselves, in turn, making them ‘hungry for God’ and his righteousness and holiness.”

Wilson urges Christians to make time for prayer, nothing that “people always have time for what they want to do.”

“We make time for these things because they are a priority and they are necessary in life and guess what? So is prayer. Prayer is like the air for the lungs of the Christian. So do not try to find time – make it.”

When is Ash Wednesday 2024?

Ash Wednesday is not a fixed date. Its timing is tied to Easter Sunday, and for most Christians, Easter will fall on March 31 this year.

Easter also moves annually, swinging between March 22 and April 25 based on a calendar calculation involving the moon.

This year, Ash Wednesday will fall on Feb. 14 2024.

Where do the ashes come from?

Typically, the ashes are from the palms used on Palm Sunday, which falls a week before Easter, according to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Ashes can be purchased, but some churches make their own by burning the palms from prior years. For example, several parishes and schools in the Chicago Catholic Archdiocese plan to hold palm burning ceremonies this year.

Can Catholics celebrate Valentine’s Day on Ash Wednesday?

In addition to the candy heart and chocolate-fueled secular celebrations, Feb. 14 is also the Feast of St. Valentine. But Ash Wednesday with its fasting and abstinence requirements is far more significant and should be prioritized, said Catholic Bishop Richard Henning of Providence, Rhode Island, in the diocese’s official newspaper.

“Ash Wednesday is the much higher value and deserves the full measure of our devotion,” he said. “I ask with all respect that we maintain the unique importance of Ash Wednesday. If you would like to wine and dine your Valentine, please do so on the Tuesday before. February 13 is Mardi Gras, ‘Fat Tuesday,’ a perfect day to feast and celebrate!”

What is Lent?

Lent is the annual period of Christian observance that precedes Easter. The dates of Lent are defined by the date of Easter, which is a moveable feast, meaning that it falls on a different date each year. Lent starts on Ash Wednesday, and its observance lasts for 40 days, excluding Sundays. Lent ends this year on Thursday, April 6.

Catholics started the tradition of Lent around the year 325, during the Council of Nicea, but it has spread through other Christian denominations, including Western Orthodox churches, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians and Anglicans, among others.

During lent, Christians give up things like habits or food and drink items. The tradition’s origins go back to Jesus’ 40 days of temptation in the desert.

Lent comes from the Middle English word “lente,” which means springtime, and signals the coming of spring.

Michelle Troconis' trial enters 21st day on Wednesday

Michelle Troconis returned to court on Wednesday for the 21^st day of her trial in Stamford. She is facing charges connected to the disappearance of Jennifer Dulos in 2019 and her presumed death.

The last day the trial was held was on Thursday and it expected to resume today after a court holiday and a snowstorm that closed the courts on Tuesday.

Last week, experts testified about data that was pulled from cell phones as well as from some of the vehicles central to the case.

Jennifer Dulos, a mom of five, vanished on May 24, 2019.

She and her husband, Fotis Dulos, were going through a divorce when she disappeared and police believe he killed her in the garage of her home in New Canaan after she dropped their children off at school and then cleaned up the crime scene.

Troconis, 49, was dating Fotis Dulos when Jennifer disappeared and she is accused of helping Fotis cover up the killing of his wife, whose body has never been found.

She has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder, tampering with evidence and hindering prosecution and has pleaded not guilty and denied any involvement.

On Thursday, Fairfield Police Detective Michael Clark extracted the data from Fotis Dulos’ cell phones and broke down a gap in time on the morning of May 24, 2019.

The phone appeared not to move from Fotis’ Jefferson Crossing home in Farmington.

Assistant States Attorney Michelle Manning asked about message data pulled from Fotis’ phone that morning,

“None of them were opened and viewed until the earliest being 1:33 in the afternoon. Is that correct?” Manning asked.

Clark replied, ‘Yes.”

But Clark mapped out activity later in the day, tracking the phone at 4 Jefferson Crossing in Farmington, 80 Mountain Spring Road, and Albany Avenue om Hartford.

Clark also testified about a phone call that Fotis received from a friend that, according to investigators, was pre-arranged to provide an alibi for Fotis the morning Jennifer disappeared.

“Call me tomorrow morning (at) mine and we will talk,” Clark read for the jury.

Troconis answered the call, according to statements she gave to police.

Forensic expert Mark Newth, of the state forensic laboratory, also testified on Thursday.

“I have no reason to believe the data is ever that inaccurate,” Newth said while the defense pressed him about the accuracy of location data extracted from vehicles.

Newth offered GPS data from both Fotis Dulos’ Raptor and phone data from Jennifer Dulos’ Chevy Suburban, which was recovered from New Canaan.

The GPS data from the Raptor confirmed its movements on May 24, including Fotis Dulos’ trip to Albany Avenue in Hartford, where police said he was seen disposing of evidence.

From Jennifer’s suburban, Newth testified an iPhone connected to Bluetooth at 2:56 p.m., but he couldn’t say who it belonged to.

The defense brought up the call history of that iPhone, implying it indicated it was Jennifer’s phone.

“Why and how did Jennifer Dulos’ cell phone, her iPhone, attach to her vehicle?” Troconis’ defense attorney Jon Schoenhorn asked outside court on Thursday. “Who had it, who was either in or near her vehicle with it at that time?”

Enfield Drag Story Hour returns after being canceled due to social media threats

A Pride event in Enfield that was reportedly canceled last month over concerns about social media threats is returning.

Drag Story Hour is returning in April, but the event will be at a new location.

The event hosted by Enfield Pride is described by organizers as a series of story time readings by a drag performer for children of all ages with the goals of promoting reading and diversity.

Instead of taking place at the library, the next Drag Story Hour will be held at Asnuntuck Community College on Saturday, April 20 at 10 a.m. The school will reportedly be providing security for the event for everyone’s safety and comfort.

Back in January, Enfield Pride planned to hold a Drag Story Hour at Central Library. The event drew excitement and criticism from different members of the community. According to organizers, there were threats on social media and they decided to cancel the event.

“A lot of people did not like that apparently and it warranted different threats. People were trying to protest. Getting very, very deep threats, too,” Felicity V. Lay, who is part of the group, said when the January event was canceled.

Enfield police had said the threats hadn’t been reported, but the mayor told NBC Connecticut back in January that he was aware of the community uproar then.

“I know residents were very upset about it and social media was a frenzy,” Mayor Ken Nelson previously said.

He had stressed he wanted to see the community come together.

Enfield Pride said they have since received many messages of support from the queer community and their allies, and they are expecting a big event.

Uber and Lyft drivers plan to strike on Valentine's Day. Here's what it means to you

Ride-hailing app drivers and app-based delivery drivers across the country are planning to park their cars and picket major U.S. airports on Valentine’s Day in what organizers say is their largest strike yet in a drive for better pay and benefits.

Uber and Lyft drivers plan daylong strikes Wednesday in Chicago; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; Miami; Orlando and Tampa, Florida; Hartford, Connecticut; Newark, New Jersey; Austin, Texas; and Providence, Rhode Island. Drivers also plan to hold midday demonstrations at airports in those cities, according to Justice for App Workers, the group organizing the effort.

The strike is organized by the group called Justice for App Workers that works with 130,000 drivers for rideshare programs like Uber and Lyft and delivery services like DoorDash and Amazon.

The drivers request a safe work environment, better wages, an end to “unfair” deactivation, healthcare and mental healthcare, bathroom access locations, and the right to unionize.

“We’re fed up with low pay [and] bad safety. We have attacks on drivers on a daily basis, and dozens and dozens have lost their lives,” Justice for App Workers representative Lenny Sanchez said.

Drivers are asked to avoid picking up or dropping off drivers at those airports. Drivers say they hope the rallies help consumers understand why they are striking.

“[Consumers] are paying more for the service while we are getting paid less. And during a time of inflation where the cost of vehicles, maintenance, fuel has all increased. Other wages across the country have increased, but in our case, they have decreased,” Sanchez said.

Uber said Tuesday it doesn’t expect the strike to have much impact on its operations on Valentine’s Day.

“These types of events have rarely had any impact on trips, prices or driver availability,” Uber said in a statement. “That’s because the vast majority of drivers are satisfied.” Uber said drivers were making about $33 an hour towards the end of last year. The company also said it allows drivers to dispute deactivations.

“We are constantly working to improve the driver experience,” Lyft said in a statement. Lyft said its U.S. drivers make an average of $30.68 per hour, or $23.46 per hour after expenses.

Earlier this month, Lyft said it began guaranteeing that drivers will make at least 70% of their fares each week, and it lays out its fees more clearly for drivers in a new earnings statement. Lyft also unveiled a new in-app button that lets drivers appeal deactivation decisions.

DoorDash said they don’t expect a significant impact on Valentines Day and said they are “always listening to dashers and looking for ways to improve the platform.”

Strike organizers said they understand that not every driver will be able to be a part of the strike and some people will need to drive Wednesday to make money. They still support those drivers.

“We do understand that some drivers have the absolute need to make money tomorrow, so we don’t expect 100% participation. A lot of drivers do gig work because of the flexibility,” Sanchez said. “If somebody needs the income and they can only work on Wednesdays, so be it. Go make your money.”

I-95 South in Bridgeport reopens after tractor-trailer fire

Interstate 95 South in Bridgeport has reopened after a tractor-trailer fire briefly closed part of the highway on Wednesday morning.

The fire impacted multiple lanes of the highway between exits 25 and 24.

All of the lanes in area have since fully reopened.

No injuries were reported.

Some schools delayed this morning as storm cleanup continues

Several school districts delayed opening on Wednesday as cleanup continues from the nor’easter that dumped over a foot of snow in some parts of the state. You can see the full list here.

Farmington and West Hartford appeared to have the highest amounts of snow with town each getting a little over 15 inches.

Several other towns saw a foot or more of snow on Tuesday. You can see how much snow your town has here.

After the storm moved out, the skies gradually cleared overnight.

For Valentine’s Day, it will be sunny with gusty, chilly winds. The winds will be between 20-35 mph. Highs will be in the 30s.

The “feels-like” temperatures will be in the teens and 20s.

Thursday will be fair and cool with highs in the 30s. Periods of snow are possible Thursday night. A few towns could get an inch of snow.

There will be fair weather on Friday and through the weekend.

Car crashes into apartment building in Wallingford

Police are investigating after a car crashed into the front of an apartment building in Wallingford Tuesday night.

Authorities said they were called to South Elm Street after getting a report of a car crash into a building just before 9 p.m.

Officers found a gray 2016 Kia Optima crashed into the front side of the apartment complex, causing damage to the building.

The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, police said. No other injuries were reported.

Investigators said the Kia was traveling on Wharton Brook Drive, approaching the intersection of South Elm Street, when it continued straight across the road and into the apartment complex.

No arrests have been made and the incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 203-294-2800.

Snow along I-84 corridor brings shoveling and fun for neighbors

People were cleaning up along the Interstate 84 corridor, which got quite a bit of snow from Tuesday’s storm.

The sounds of shoveling have been constant in this Plainville neighborhood.

“This is my third trip out. Started twice with the snow blower and this time shoveling and finishing up,” Francis Dutko, of Plainville, said.

Neighbors cleared out nearly a foot of snow from their driveways.

“Good thing we have our stuff like snow blowers and shovels ready, so I was all set to go. I got my warm clothes on,” Jordan Iris, of Plainville, said.

This latest storm dumped snow along the I-84 corridor, surprising some.

“When we woke up, we saw ‘Oh my God!’ it’s more than before,” Yasmeen Azaad, of Plainville, said.

While the adults worked, the kids played with snowball fights raging in the streets. One mother and daughter decided to take it easy.

“I’m so glad I don’t have to go to work today, and we get to have a nice snow day,” Molly Grenier, of Bristol, said.

Others felt it would be the perfect opportunity to sled at Panthorn Park.

“I felt like I went pretty fast because down there, you just go down there and there’s a little jump there,” Eric Gadomski, of Southington, said.

For some, it’s a reminder of how much snow winter can bring in New England.

“It’s been like super mild really lately so seeing all this coming down, seeing all this pile up, it’s a wake-up call to reminding of winter’s past,” Laumas Cordero, of Plainville, said.

Neil Young tour is making a stop in Connecticut

Neil Young and Crazy Horse will be coming to Connecticut during their newly-announced tour this May.

Live Nation said they’ll come to Bridgeport as a part of their Love Earth Tour. Neil Young and Crazy Horse will perform at the Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater on Saturday, May 18.

It’s Young’s first tour in a decade. He and Crazy Horse have played together for over 50 years and they will perform familiar songs, as well as new hits from a new album called FU##IN’ UP.

The album features nine songs on 2 LPs. It’ll be released in limited edition color vinyl pressing on April 20, with a wider, all format release starting April 26.

Frenzied crowd streams to Enfield for Raising Cane's opening

Around the country there are Raising Cane’s restaurants in 40 states, and now for the first time, there is one in Connecticut.

The restaurant opened a location in Enfield Tuesday and despite the weather, there was an amazing turnout.

Raising Cane’s is a fast-food phenomenon. Hysteria follows it wherever it goes. Like the name suggests, there was much commotion surrounding Tuesday’s opening.

“I actually requested off from work to come in today,” said Justin Rosas, who crossed the state border and drove from Chicopee, Mass. “Honestly, I couldn’t wait.”

Cars were lined up not only around the building, but into the Enfield Mall parking lot. Police were needed to direct traffic – all for one thing: chicken fingers.

“I always get chicken fingers at every restaurant. So, you got to get the good ones,” Valentina Stanton, of Stafford, said.

Despite snowy conditions, hungry customers were not to be denied.

“[My friend has] really great snow tires on his new car so we decide to come out and brave the snow,” Andrew Laureno, of Suffield, said.

The weather, though, left some wondering how much larger the crowd could’ve been. There have been Raising Cane’s openings in other locations where customers have slept in the parking lot the night before.

“We were ready for it. We had tents and all sorts of things ready for those guys, but the snow obviously deterred them,” Raising Cane’s Area Leader Marcus Carter said.

Although it was hard to tell, it wasn’t even the official grand opening. That has been postponed until Wednesday. The festivities start at 8:30 a.m. and will include:

A live DJ on-site playing music to entertain the crowd all day long.

A “Lucky 20” drawing to award 20 customers (age 13 and older) Free Cane’s for a Year! Entries will be accepted from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. with the winners drawn beginning at 9:30 a.m. Customers must be present to win.

“We don’t bring variety. We bring perfection,” Carter said.

Not only is this a popular place for customers, but it’s also a place a lot of people want to work.

Carter said this restaurant received 4,000 applications to work here. They hired about 160 people.

CT changes age requirement for kindergarteners and it's leaving parents confused

The state is changing the age requirement for kindergarteners and it;s causing some stress and confusion for some families.

Starting next school year, kids must turn 5 years old by Sept. 1 to be eligible for kindergarten.

Parents can seek a waiver if they’re child is 4 years old, but has a birthday between Sept. 2 and Dec. 31. The problem is, school districts are handling that process differently.

“There’s no uniformity or consistency across the state, and that’s really hard for parents to navigate,” Coralys Santana, a policy and advocacy strategist with the Connecticut Project, said.

Parents of 9,000 children born in that four-month window are now scrambling to figure out if they can get their kids into kindergarten or if they’ll need one more year of preschool.

The Connecticut Project released a survey Tuesday of 98 superintendents detailing how differently school districts are handling the change.

The study found only 60% of surveyed districts have posted information on their websites about how parents can apply for a waiver.

Many families of incoming kindergarteners are trying to enroll their kids now. Parents will also need to start seeking a preschool seat if that’s ultimately what happens with their 4-year-old.

“It’s confusing, it’s frustrating,” said Santana, who has a child who will be eligible by turning 5 years old in July.

School districts have the flexibility in how they assess a child’s readiness for kindergarten, including whether that assessment is the only factor or part of a broader evaluation.

The Connecticut Project survey found that 37.2% of superintendents said they don’t have the resources to conduct an assessment. So some districts are providing a questionnaire for parents to complete with help from their preschool teachers or childcare providers.

More than half of superintendents said the state should delay implementation, but Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendent Fran Rabinowicz said that’s unlikely.

She does agree the state should have phased in the requirement – the legislature approved the change just last session – to give districts more time to prepare. Part of the problem is the difficulty in assessing a 4-year-old’s readiness.

“They may not know the letters a, b, c today, but they may know them two days from now,” Rabinowicz said.

She said superintendents are doing what they can to help parents who may need to find another year of preschool for their children.

Some are trying to ensure seats are available, while others are creating a special transitional program for four-year-olds who aren’t enrolled.

Unfortunately, the additional year of preschool can be an unexpected cost for parents who planned to enroll their kids in preschool before the change.

Advocates also said preschool and childcare programs are already dealing with shortages and waitlist. That’s before as many as 9,000 kids could return for another year.

They want more funding for early childhood programming, especially in the form of subsidies for low-income families whose kids now need another year. Some lawmakers agree.

“One of the things we can do is put resources, dollars into expanding out childhood offerings across the state,” Sen. Douglas McCrory (D-Hartford), co-chair of the Education Committee, said.

Person found dead inside home after fire in Chaplin

A person has died after a fire broke out at a home in Chaplin on Tuesday morning, according to town officials.

The blaze broke out at about 4:45 a.m. on Willimantic Road.

The town’s first selectman said the person’s identity wasn’t immediately known. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is working to identify them.

The fire marshal’s office and Connecticut State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit are actively investigating.

No additional information was immediately available.

Police ID person killed after car plunges into Five Mile River in Darien

Police have identified the person who died after their car plunged into a river in Darien last week.

Investigators said a Nissan Rog u e crossed from the eastbound to the westbound lane of Tokeneke Road on Friday around midnight and went off the road near the Rowayton town line. The vehicle then hit fencing and plummeted into the Five Mile River where it meets the Long Island Sound.

Several Darien officers quickly responded and found the vehicle nearly submerged in the near-freezing water.

According to police, a 21-year-old woman who was floating face down was pulled from the water. Emergency crews worked to resuscitate the woman. She is in stable condition and is recovering at the hospital.

Firefighters with cold water gear entered the water and searched for additional victims. Fire officials later found 21-year-old Youssoupha Diagne, of Bridgeport, in the submerged vehicle. Diagne was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Two officers who went into the river are still recovering with non-life threatening injuries.

The incident remains under investigation.

I-91 North in Hartford reopened after tractor-trailer jackknifes

A tractor-trailer jackknifed on Interstate 91 North in Hartford and the highway was closed for hours. It has since reopened.

The highway was closed between exits 29 and 29A.

Heavy snow had been falling across much of the state since early Tuesday morning and Gov. Ned Lamont signed an order ahead of the storm that banned all tandem tractor-trailers and empty tractor-trailers from traveling on all limited-access highways across the state.

The ban went into effect at midnight and was lifted as of 1 p.m.

Top-ranked UConn faces massive test against No. 4 Marquette

Top-ranked Connecticut has looked like a legitimate contender to become the first team to repeat as national champions since Florida 17 years ago.

The Huskies have a dominating big man in Donovan Clingan, players who know what it takes to win big games and have passed nearly every test in front of them.

The next one may be UConn’s biggest of the season: against No. 4 Marquette.

“These are pressure-packed games, so the best way to win them is to have no weaknesses on your team,” UConn coach Danny Hurley said last week.

The Huskies (22-2, 12-1 Big East) haven’t had many since winning their fifth national championship last April.

UConn has spent the past five weeks at No. 1 in the AP Top 25 and is on a 12-game winning streak heading into Saturday’s game against the Golden Eagles.

Marquette (18-5, 9-3) also has been playing well lately, winning seven straight to move up three spots in this week’s poll. The Golden Eagles also have one of the nation’s best players in AP preseason All-American Tyler Kolek, who scored 22 of his 27 points in the second half as they rallied from a 15-point deficit to beat St. John’s last week.

“This is one of Tyler Kolek’s best games that he’s ever played at Marquette,” Golden Eagles coach Shaka Smart said.

They’re going to need him to do it again in what could be one of the best games of the college basketball season.

The heaviest snow will likely be over the next few hours.

The southern half of the state will see the most snow. Some towns could see eight inches of snow while others see two inches.

The storm is fast moving and will taper off in the early afternoon.

Governor ends ban on tractor-trailer travel on Conn. highways

Tractor-trailers were banned from traveling on highways across Connecticut because of Tuesday’s snowstorm, but the ban has been lifted.

Gov. Ned Lamont had signed an order that banned all tandem tractor-trailers and empty tractor-trailers from traveling on all limited-access highways across the state at midnight. It was lifted at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

On Tuesday morning, a tractor-trailer jackknifed on Interstate 91 South in Rocky Hill. Then another jackknifed on I-91 North in Hartford.

The ban was implemented with neighboring states, Rhode Isand, New York and Massachusetts, which also implemented similar travel bans on their roads.

“During the peak periods of the storm, we are anticipating treacherous conditions that will make travel very difficult,” Lamont said. “We’ve consulted with our neighboring states and have decided as a region that it’s in the best interest of safety to enact this travel ban on tandem tractor trailers and empty tractor trailers during the duration of the storm.”

New Britain businesses ramp up Valentine's Day deliveries before winter storm

A winter storm can always put a damper on local business, but the incoming storm Tuesday also comes just one day before Valentine’s Day.

Now, small businesses in New Britain that depend on the holiday are preparing to weather the storm.

From blinged bouquets to a dozen roses, New Britain Flower Shop sells expressions of love.

“I love the snow, but when I saw this, I’m like, ‘Oh no, not on my biggest holiday!’” owner Nicholas Erlacher said.

Now the owner is trying to think like a “smartie” when it comes to getting 20,000 roses delivered by Valentine’s Day, despite the winter storm.

“Tomorrow, we’re going to still be working here. Doesn’t matter if there’s eight feet of snow. I’m going to get my way here. We’re going to be working out our orders,” Erlacher said.

At Edible Arrangements New Britain, the head designer has the same mentality about the incoming snow.

“Slows us up a lot,” Chaz Wes, Edible Arrangements head designer, said. “Valentine’s Day is like the Super Bowl.”

So the team works fast to fulfill anywhere from 70 to 200 orders they get for Valentine’s Day. It’s much more than the typical day of just about 15 orders.

Wes said today, they called up customers and asked to make deliveries early to beat the storm.

“We already pre-made a lot of stuff. So as soon as we come in tomorrow, it’s going straight out,” he said.

Right now, stepping into Belvedere Restaurant & Cafe will make you swoon, thanks to romantic Valentine’s Day decorations.

“Red and black, and low roses and even more roses,” owner Ela Konferowicz said.

Konferowicz said she will make a decision on Tuesday morning about whether to close the restaurant for the day.

“We rather that our employees will stay home and be safe, our clients will stay home instead of driving,” she said.

These entrepreneurs do not expect the storm to lead to big financial loss.

“We don’t really think about how we are losing us and money wise, because we think that safeness is the most important,” Konferowicz said.

They expect the business pulse to pick back up, hoping by Wednesday, hearts will be the only things missing a beat.

“We’re going to work around,” Wes said. “It happens, you know, this is New England.”

Belvedere Café should be open by Wednesday, and both Edible Arrangements and New Britain Flower Shop say any orders they cannot get out in advance, they will plan to deliver on Valentine’s Day.

Flights at CT airports are being delayed, canceled due to winter storm

Flights coming into and out of Tweed and Bradley International Airport are being delayed and canceled on Tuesday.

Tweed Airport said all Avelo Airlines flights on Feb. 13 are being pushed back to Wednesday.

The Connecticut Airport Authority said Bradley International Airport is open, the majority of early morning departures are operating on schedule and the airlines have canceled around 11% of Tuesday’s flights.

This is mainly affecting flights scheduled for later this morning through mid-day.

Passengers who are traveling on Tuesday should check with their airline on the flight status before heading to the airport. You can check on flights here.

Hartford church addresses safety following double fatal shooting

A church in Hartford and several community activists are coming together after two people were shot and killed over the weekend.

Police say it happened just before 5 a.m. on Saturday on 641 Garden St., not far from where another deadly shooting occurred late last month.

“It’s too much. It’s too much. And the community has a responsibility. We need to start standing up for another,” Giselle Jacobs, of Hartford, said.

Jacobs is one of many people worried about the level of crime and violence in her neighborhood.

On Monday, she and others gathered at the site of Saturday’s shooting. Police say three men were shot. Two of them were pronounced dead when officers arrived on scene.

The other was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities say two shooters were involved in this incident. One of the shooters was one of the deceased men police found on scene.

“It’s just becoming too frequent now and so action needs to be put in place now,” Pastor Dexter Burke, of Walk in the Light Church of God, said.

Burke, whose church is on the same block as the shooting, said he would like to see a larger police presence in the area. He said he’d also like to create stronger partnerships with shop owners and other church leaders as well as implement what he’s calling a 24-hour block watch.

“There’s a group of Garden Street residents and homeowners and business owners that are going to be part of that plan,” Burke said.

He couldn’t say how many people are part of the block watch, but that it is a new effort to keep the community safe and accountable.

“Churches are supposed to change lives for the better, so when the church is ineffective in cleaning up our streets, we have to reevaluate our position and role as a church. When neighbors are not reporting violations to authorities, we’ve got a problem,” Burke said.

Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam also responded to the issue of gun violence, saying the city is creating an Office of Violence Prevention.

“The action is what’s really necessary. Being able to be on the ground and have those relationships one-on-one is really important,” Arulampalam said.

New Milford PD look for people accused of breaking into medical equipment supplier

New Milford police are looking for whoever broke into a medical equipment supply company over the weekend.

Police said four people forced their way into MEDInstill, located on Housatonic Avenue in New Milford, on Saturday.

Authorities said the four people captured on surveillance video caused significant damage to the inside of the building. It’s unknown if anything was stolen.

If you have to hit the roads in the snow, here are some tips to stay safe

Get ready for some white-knuckle driving tomorrow.

We haven’t had much practice driving in the snow in recent years and you may be a little rusty on what to do in slippery situations.

Here are some reminders on what you need to know if you have to be out on the roads.

Those warnings to stay home and off the roads during a snowstorm come with good reason.

“Just from 2021 to 2023, there were 11,000 crashes in the Bay State during snowfall or when snow is still on the roadway,” says Mark Schieldrop, spokesman for AAA Northeast. “And of those crashes, 11 people lost their lives and 1800 people were injured and if you think about it, not many days of the year we are seeing snow on the roads…that’s a lot of crashes. That’s a lot of fatalities for that short period of time.”

The main rule of thumb is to slow it down to account for lower traction when there is snow on the roads.

“Along with slowing down, you got to increase that following distance. If you have to make an abrupt stop, you might lose control and hit the car in front of you,” Schieldrop said. “If your tires are more than a few years old, they’re starting to be worn out. You’re going to be at a significant disadvantage. Somebody with a good set of tires is going to be able to stop sooner, stop more quickly, and they’re going to have much more control and traction when there’s any snow on the ground.”

Remember to accelerate and decelerate slowly to regain traction and avoid skids. If you do start to skid, don’t panic.

“Hold down that brake pedal and look at where you want to go, and your hands will naturally follow your eyes. You can steer when you’re breaking,” said Schieldrop. “A lot of times when people are starting to lose control, they panic, they freeze, they slam on that brake pedal and they don’t steer the car. Continue to steer the car even when that brake pedal depressed.”

Hopefully you’ll be able to maintain control of your vehicle and avoid a crash.

And you better dig out your ice scrapers and snow brooms and use them. Remember that in Massachusetts you can get cited for driving with snow obstructing your windows or for not removing it from your roof.

“It’s considered an unsecured load according to Massachusetts law,” Schieldrop explained. “So, while it’s not directly illegal to have snow on your car, if you have snow in your car and it comes off and causes damage to another vehicle, or could potentially injure or kill someone, because of causing a crash, you know, you can be cited and face legal consequences for that.”

If you do get into an accident, get to the shoulder of the road, stay in your vehicle, keep your seatbelt on and call for help.

AAA said first responders and tow truck drivers have been struck at an increasing rate in recent years and you need to remember that the roadside is an extremely dangerous place to be, especially in low visibility situations. Use extreme caution if you choose to get out of your vehicle to look at the damages.

AAA recommends you keep an emergency kit in your car. In addition to that snow broom you may want to add some flashlights and a blanket, make sure you have a phone charger, some water, jumper cables, sand or non-clumping cat litter to use as a traction aid and a shovel in case you get stuck.

Gov. Lamont hopes to create more affordable childcare options for parents

Business owners say a childcare shortage is making it harder to hire and retain talented employees.

Now, Gov. Ned Lamont and lawmakers want to make the issue a top priority this legislative session.

“The business community says it’s absolutely vital, gets more of our new mom and dads, either retain them or get them back to work,” Lamont said.

Lamont’s budget proposal would add $43 million for childcare and early education programs to a spending plan that already includes a large increase next fiscal year.

That additional funding would raise the threshold for Care4Kids, a program that helps low-income families afford childcare, and provide incentives to businesses that offer childcare help to employees.

Lamont also wants to streamline the process to open a licensed care center, reassess the requirements to be a licensed worker and eliminate the fee to obtain a license.

Business owners like Meredith Shay, president and CEO of Colchester-based InCord, support efforts to make childcare more accessible and affordable.

“I’ve noticed over the past 10 years that it’s really put a strain not just on our employees but on our entire community,” Shay said.

She said it’s become an even bigger problem in the last few years, with employees changing jobs or even leaving the workforce to focus on childcare.

Shay said in some parts of the state, like southeastern Connecticut, few centers currently exist. That makes it difficult for employees who want childcare options close to home, so both parents can have flexibility.

“I was on waitlists even with the nine months that I knew needed to find childcare,” she said of her own family.

Lawmakers have voiced support for Lamont’s proposal. Rep. Kate Farrar (D-West Hartford) said House Democrats are planning their own legislation, including the creation of a trust fund dedicated to childcare costs.

“Having this dedicated funding structure that can accept not only public investment, but also private philanthropic investment can set us up for having dedicated funds for this in the future,” she said.

Farrar said lawmakers could also provide help by offering housing assistance and childcare subsidies to low-paid childcare workers, helping keep those employees in the industry.

Additionally, the state could utilize bonding to help childcare centers looking to expand.

Lamont is likely to see some pushback on his proposal, which looks to reallocate $43 million currently marked for education.

“I think for us that see the benefits of education for all ages, we have to make sure that we’re doing that for childcare and K through 12,” Farrar said.

Lamont said he’s open to other suggestions for funding, but has also been adamantly opposed to relaxing fiscal guardrails meant to limit state spending.

14-year-old girl dragged by vehicle in North Haven

A 14-year-old girl was seriously hurt after being dragged by a vehicle in North Haven on Sunday.

Police said they were called to a home at about 5 p.m. Officers said the teen was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The girl told police that she had been dragged by a vehicle driven by a 15-year-old. It’s unknown if she knew them.

The suspect faces charges including first-degree assault, robbery and reckless endangerment. They were also charged with larceny of a motor vehicle on an outstanding warrant.

Suspected animal organs found at Fairfield park: police

Fairfield police are investigating after finding what appears to be animal organs at a Fairfield park last week.

Authorities said they received a report of items resembling animal organs at Gould Manor Park on Thursday.

The discovery is actively being investigated by police, who believe the suspected animal organs suggest a Santeria-type ritual.

The police department said there is no threat to the public. Officers are actively looking for whoever is responsible for leaving the apparent organs at the park.

Residents are being advised to report any suspicious incidents to police, and use caution when sharing sensitive or provocative information on social media.

Firefighter injured, several people displaced after New London fire

A firefighter is injured and seven people are displaced after a fire broke out at a multi-family home in New London on Monday.

Fire officials said the fire happened on Gorton Street around 11 a.m.

Crews said the fire started in the attic. It was put under control within 30 minutes.

A firefighter sustained a knee injury while battling the blaze. They are expected to be OK.

Seven people living in the multi-family home have been displaced, firefighters said.

The fire marshal’s office is investigating.

2 people injured during home invasion and robbery in Bridgeport: police

Two people were taken to the hospital after an apparent home invasion in Bridgeport on Saturday night.

Police said they were called to a reported home invasion and robbery in the 500 block of Connecticut Avenue at about 8 p.m.

Responding officers found a man and woman with non-life threatening injuries. Both were hospitalized with lacerations, bruises and abrasions, according to authorities. They have since been released.

Police are looking for two suspects who fled the scene on foot. Both are described as men wearing all black clothing and masks. At least one of the suspects had a gun with him, officials said.

Cash was stolen from the home during the incident. Investigators said the victims were targeted and the incident appears to be isolated.

Detectives are actively investigating. They seized several items of evidence found at the scene.

Exercise provides a healthy outlet for stress reduction, promotes overall wellness, while offering numerous benefits to one’s mental and physical health. Here are some of the ways exercise contributes to recovery.

The role of exercise in substance use recovery

Easing cravings and withdrawal symptoms: Along with reducing things like stress, anxiety, and depression, exercise can help ease cravings for substances. It can also lessen withdrawal symptoms like restlessness, irritability, and insomnia. Exercise, like substance use, activates the brain’s reward pathway, releasing chemicals like serotonin and dopamine. When these chemical reactions occur in response to a healthy activity like exercise, it lessens the pain and discomfort of withdrawal while also reducing cravings.
Boosting self-esteem and mental wellness: The mental and emotional benefits of exercise go beyond simple chemical reactions. When people engage in a physical fitness routine, they burn fat, build muscle, boost energy levels, and increase stamina. These changes help people feel accomplished and more confident, providing an additional sense of value to their recovery journey.
Routine and structure: Fitness routines encourage consistency and personal dedication. Oftentimes, exercise involves social interaction and can provide people with a sense of community. Exercises that benefit addiction recovery

While some people have an established exercise or recreation interest—like golf, basketball, tennis, or martial arts—others may still be searching for a fitness outlet. When deciding on a fitness routine, it’s important to consider activities one enjoys, rather than just activities that provide physical results. Having the motivation to stick with a routine is important, and people are more likely to commit to a fitness routine they enjoy.

Here are some activities worth exploring:

Aerobics: Aerobic exercises promote heart health and can be especially effective in curbing withdrawal symptoms. Activities like walking, cycling, swimming, and jogging are some great examples.
Resistance and strength training: A great way to build muscle and improve flexibility, resistance workouts appeal to people because they can be performed in small spaces with minimal equipment. Exercises like lunges, sit-ups, stretches, and yoga poses produce positive results and are easy to do with limited space.
Personal interests: Fitness doesn’t need to be confined to any predetermined pursuits. Employee of tree company dies after being struck by work vehicle in Shelton

A man working for a tree company has died after being struck by a work vehicle in Shelton on Friday.

Emergency crews responded to School Street around 1 p.m. after getting a report of a pedestrian that had been struck.

Once in the area, police said they found a man who was unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man was later identified as 29-year-old Erick Irizarry, of Waterbury.

Investigators determined Irizarry was working in the area for Asplundh Tree Service and was hit by a work vehicle.

The Office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was notified and responded to the scene.

The investigation is active and ongoing.

Man who struck school bus in Cheshire has died: police

The driver who struck a school bus in Cheshire on Monday morning has died, according to police.

Police said Casey Kennedy, 52, of Cheshire crossed the double yellow line on Highland Avenue and hit the front of a school bus that was in the southbound side around 6:26 a.m.

The crash happened at Stony Hill Road and the school bus driver tried to move as far to the right of the southbound lane as possible, police said.

The drivers were the only people in the vehicles.

Kennedy was taken to an area hospital and he later died from the injuries, police said.

Highland Avenue, or Route 10, was closed between Stony Hill Road and Country Club Road but has since reopened.
