Quashing Rumors, Vance Says Amnesty Deal Is Off the Table

“[W]e’re not going to do amnesty in this country,” Vice President JD Vance declared emphatically Wednesday.

“We’re actually not going to tell people who’ve come into the country illegally that they’re allowed to break our laws and be rewarded for it,” the vice president explained in remarks to Jason Calacanis of the “All-In” podcast at a policy summit in Washington.

Rumors were swirling around Washington about whether an amnesty deal was on the table in Congress after conservative activist Charlie Kirk said in early July that there was a push among some lawmakers for the move. Several Republican lawmakers later introduced a bill to grant what has been characterized by some as amnesty to certain illegal aliens, including a pathway to citizenship for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients, the so-called Dreamers.

The policy summit was hosted by The Hill and Valley Forum, a consortium of tech investors and lawmakers, and by the popular venture capitalist podcast. It featured some of the president’s most prominent supporters, including Chamath Palihapitiya, David Sacks, and David Friedberg. Sacks currently serves as the chairman of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

“There’s nothing discompassionate, or there’s nothing hateful, about enforcing your own borders,” Vance said.

The vice president noted that toleration of illegal immigration facilitated the Mexican cartels’ trafficking of drugs and human beings and left thousands of illegal immigrant children unaccounted for after they came into the U.S. during the Biden administration.

Vance said the decision to reject amnesty was direct from President Donald Trump, noting that “while he listens to everybody, he’s also going to make the decisions that he thinks are best for the country, and then we go and execute that after, of course, having a big conversation around the inner circle.”

The vice president said the Trump administration has “to talk about this stuff and try to come up with the right decision.”

Vance told the tech titans that automation was one answer to labor shortages that might occur in the agricultural sector as a result of enforcing American immigration law.

“I actually think there’s a lot of evidence that the American agricultural economy is a little behind the eight ball when it comes to using technology. There are ways where we’re talking about facilitating the use of automation,” the vice president contended, adding:

[W]e’re not going to have amnesty, but we also recognize that there are a lot of industries out there we want to thrive.

The vice president has taken a prominent role in the administration over its first six months, breaking a number of ties in the Senate to advance major legislative goals of the president, such as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and confirming Trump’s pick to be secretary of defense.

ICE Ramps up Recruiting, Offers $50K Signing Bonuses

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act containing much of President Donald Trump’s agenda allocates $75 billion for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and now ICE is using the funding to recruit agents.

ICE is offering incentives to attract new talent and encourage retired agents to return to the job. Top recruits may receive a signing bonus as large as $50,000, according to the New York Post, in addition to earning a six-figure salary.

“On behalf of a grateful nation,” ICE is calling upon former agents to “RETURN TO MISSION and reclaim your vital role among the courageous men and women of ICE.”

“You served the United States of America with distinction and honor. Now, your country is calling upon you to serve once more,” ICE writes on its website.

“Due to the prior administration’s disastrous immigration policies, the men and women of ICE now face unprecedented challenges,” according to ICE. “Your experience and unwavering commitment are critically needed to secure our communities and uphold our laws.”

Over 10 million illegal aliens entered the U.S. during the four years of the Biden administration, according to Department of Homeland Security data.

Since Trump returned to office on Jan. 20, the Trump administration has arrested nearly 300,000 illegal aliens and deported more than 239,000, according to DHS.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and border czar Tom Homan have made it clear they intend to continue rapidly arresting and deporting illegal aliens, with the priority remaining on criminal illegal aliens.

New ICE recruits are slated to earn between $50,000 to $90,000, according to USA Jobs.

“The Trump administration is fully committed to supporting the dedicated law enforcement professionals who secure our borders, shield our communities, and protect our national security and public safety,” according to ICE. “This is a pivotal moment in our country’s history, and your experience and expertise are vitally needed.”

ICE is seeking to grow its workforce with 10,000 new agents as ICE agents are facing a 830% increase in assaults since Trump returned to the White House. ICE enforcement operations have spurred anti-deportation demonstrations in cities across America, some of which have grown violent.

“Secretary Noem stands with ICE agents who put themselves in harm’s way to protect the American people from violent criminal illegal aliens,” Tricia McLaughlin, DHS assistant secretary, said in a recent statement.

DHS Is Working to Find Missing Unaccompanied Alien Children

For four years, hundreds of thousands of minors arrived at the southern border without a parent or a legal guardian. The whereabouts of many of those children remain unknown, but immigration authorities are working to confirm their status, the inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security says.

“Among the most vulnerable populations [the Department of Homeland Security] encounters are unaccompanied alien children, referred to as UACs,” Joseph Cuffari said Wednesday at a House Oversight Subcommittee on Federal Law Enforcement hearing, “Catch and Release, Lose and Forget: Addressing the Crisis of Unaccompanied Alien Children.”

Between fiscal years 2019 and 2023, more than 448,000 unaccompanied alien children were transferred from Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody to the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services, Cuffari told members of the committee. Most of those children were placed in the care of a sponsor.

A recent audit conducted by the inspector general’s office found “significant gaps in how ICE monitors and manages the cases of UACs once they’re released from federal custody,” Cuffari said, also noting that limited ICE staff coupled with a massive influx of illegal immigration contributed to the challenge of monitoring the status of unaccompanied minors.

Among the 448,000 minors to enter the U.S. in recent years, ICE failed to issue more than 233,000 notices to appear in immigration court, according to the inspector general. Furthermore, more than 43,000 migrant children who were given a notice to appear in immigration court failed to do so.

The inspector general’s audit found that 31,000 of the children released to a sponsor did not have a proper address where immigration officials could reach them.

Following the findings from Cuffari’s office, ICE has accepted recommendations on how to better safeguard unaccompanied alien children.

Under the leadership of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, a team of ICE agents and DHS investigators was formed in February to “identify, locate, and provide health and welfare checks on unaccompanied alien children who had been transferred from DHS custody to HHS.”

Working with other federal law enforcement agencies, the ICE and DHS team has knocked on about 50,000 doors of sponsors who were listed as sponsoring two or more illegal-alien children.

“From what we understand, they were able to identify and physically locate 12,000 unaccompanied alien children,” Cuffari said, adding that “about 400” sponsors have been arrested following the home visits.

ICE weighs the risk an illegal alien poses to the U.S., but in the case of unaccompanied alien children, Cuffari says ICE must “also ensure a vulnerable child does not become the victim of trafficking or … exploitation.”

“The lack of reliable location data, persists in delays in issuing notices to appear, and limited interagency cooperation has led to potentially tens of thousands of children effectively disappearing from DHS’s oversight,” he said.

On average, 11,132 unaccompanied children were encountered at the southern border monthly under the Biden administration, according to the DHS.

Under U.S. law, children who arrive at the border without a parent or guardian are to be screened to determine if they are trafficking victims and then released into the custody of the HHS’ Office of Refugee Resettlement, which in turn releases the child to a sponsor in the U.S., making it much harder to find the children if they do not appear for their asylum hearing.

A sponsor can be a distant relative the child has never met—or not related at all.

According to the Office of Refugee Resettlement, a background check is run on all sponsors, and sponsors are required to ensure the child attends their immigration proceedings. The sponsor is also responsible for making sure the minor reports to ICE if they have been ordered removed.

EXCLUSIVE: GOP Lawmaker Introduces Bill to End Automatic Birthright Citizenship for Children of Illegal Aliens

FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL—The children of “lawbreakers” should not be rewarded with U.S. citizenship, a Republican congresswoman from New York says.

The Constitutional Citizenship Clarification Act, which Rep. Claudia Tenney introduced Wednesday, would end automatic birthright citizenship for the children of illegal aliens.

“The United States should not reward illegal entry into our country with automatic citizenship for the children of lawbreakers,” Tenney told The Daily Signal.

“This loophole has been exploited for decades and incentivizes illegal immigration and birth tourism,” the congresswoman continued. “The Constitutional Citizenship Clarification Act restores the true meaning of the 14th Amendment, reinforces the rule of law, while protecting the integrity of American citizenship.”

The 14th Amendment declares that “all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”

The question of birthright citizenship in the 14th Amendment has gained significant attention since President Donald Trump returned to the White House on Jan. 20.

On his first day back in office, Trump signed an executive order aimed at ending automatic birthright citizenship. The executive order declares that the phrase “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” means that children born to parents who are not in the U.S. legally are not subject to U.S. jurisdiction and are therefore not legal citizens.

Trump’s action was challenged in court and is currently blocked from taking effect.

Tenney’s bill, if passed and signed by the president, would essentially codify Trump’s executive order into law.

The Constitutional Citizenship Clarification Act aims to amend Section 301 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which details U.S. immigration law. Tenney’s bill asserts that the 14^th Amendment “is rooted in the common law doctrine of jus soli.”

While “jus soli” is Latin for “right of the soil,” the bill states that common law understands this to mean a person’s citizenship is not determined by the physical “soil” they are born on, but rather, where that person’s “allegiance or obedience” to a governing authority lies.

The U.S. Supreme Court “has long recognized that, under the principle of allegiance and obedience, the children of foreign diplomats or enemy troops born on United States soil are not entitled to birthright citizenship,” the bill states.

Following the same principle, the bill asserts “the children of foreign spies, saboteurs, terrorists, or other hostile actors, as well as the children of illegal aliens, should not be entitled to birthright citizenship.”

If made law, the bill would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to clarify that a child born to the parents of illegal aliens is not a U.S. citizen if the parents are either “unlawfully present in the United States; present in the United States for diplomatic purposes; or engaged in a hostile occupation of, or a hostile operation in, the United States.”

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., is introducing a Senate counterpart version of the bill.

The introduction of Tenney’s bill comes amid a major crackdown on illegal immigration under the Trump administration. Trump made immigration enforcement a pillar of his 2024 presidential election and has taken numerous measures to increase border security and discourage illegal immigration since taking office. In the past two months, no illegal aliens encountered at the border have been released into the interior of the U.S., according to the Trump administration.
