When bulk-shopping you’ll want to pay particular attention to the unit price, which tells you how much product you’re getting based on the unit of measurement on the box or label.

Clark says, “I started talking to my kids around the third grade about unit pricing because I wanted them to understand the tricks. I wanted them to know when something’s a deal and when it’s not.”

Americans have become more privacy-conscious this century with the maturity of the digital age. There are practical reasons for that as well with scams and identity theft presenting an ever-present threat online.

However, there are several instances where choosing to sacrifice some privacy can save you money.

For example, your auto insurance may monitor your driving in exchange for a discount on your premiums. Should you let them? That’s what a listener of the Clark Howard Podcast recently asked.

Should I Let My Auto Insurance Monitor My Driving?

Is it OK to let my auto insurance monitor my driving via a mobile app?

That’s what a listener wanted to know on the March 15 podcast episode.

Asked Mitt in Minnesota: “What are your thoughts on allowing insurance companies to monitor driving? USAA will give up to a 30% discount for safe driving. With a teenage boy, our rates are sky-high. What harm could be lurking if we install their monitoring app, and is it worth it?”

Progressive Insurance first experimented with this technology in 2006, Clark says. Insurance companies are monitoring your speed, the suddenness of your starts and stops, rapid lane changing, phone use while driving and other things. They’re using predictive analysis to determine your true risk factor.

Clark is keenly aware of the historic driving data involving teenage boys and young men. The potential for money-saving isn’t the only reason you may consider adding the privacy invasion for your son.

“If your teenager is a very different driver or becomes a very different driver when they’re being monitored, this could save your teenager’s life,” Clark says. “So that they know they’re being watched and how they drive is going to matter.

“As a parent, you have to decide what logical consequences are there if it turns out your teen is driving like he thinks he’s in NASCAR instead of on public roads.

“But these technologies are so much more accurate than they were in the original experiment 17 years ago. And you do have a real sense about how you’re driving or how somebody else is driving.”

Pros and Cons of Auto Insurance Monitoring in Your Car

Installing one of these devices in your vehicle isn’t an upside-only proposition.

One of the biggest downsides is that all this data is getting recorded. And it can legally be used against you later in case of an accident, for example.

The insurance company also is recording where you are and when you’re there any time you’re driving.

It’s also technically possible that your premiums could get more expensive if you’re a bad driver. But you usually get an automatic discount just by installing the driving app. And rates can go down from there if you’re driving well.

When auto insurance companies first introduced monitoring, some of the telemetries received criticism and seemed to be wonky. That’s no longer the case, Clark says. And these devices, though you sacrifice privacy, can make you a safer driver through forced accountability or detailed feedback.

“You might be shocked as a long-time driver the habits you or I may have developed that make us more of a danger on the roads than we realize,” Clark says. “And so there is an actual safety value for any of us, and the invasion of privacy, with these systems.”

Final Thoughts

Although auto insurance monitors aren’t perfect, they often save you money. And they can help you or your family member drive safer.

For many, it’s worth giving up some privacy for those dual outcomes. But that’s a choice you’ll have to make for yourself.

5 Cheaper Streaming Alternatives to YouTube TV

Are you frustrated by YouTube TV’s latest price hike in 2023?

The popular live TV streaming service upped its monthly price from $65 to $73 on March 16, 2023.

Though the streaming service has long been considered one of the top live TV streaming options by Team Clark, this latest increase has many of us wondering if there is a cheaper option out there.

The answer is: Yes, but you may have to potentially sacrifice on the quality and quantity of content.

Unfortunately, there’s not an easy-fix solution for many streamers.

The cable company’s fee-driven TV subscriptions may still cost you more than YouTube TV. Many streaming competitors like DIRECTV STREAM and fuboTV are still more expensive than YouTube TV. And some of the services that are cheaper may require you sacrificing some of your favorite channels.

It feels like the consumer can’t win, but we’ll try.

Let’s walk through some of the streaming options that could meet your entertainment-needs for less than $73 per month.

1. Hulu + Live TV Is Slightly Cheaper and Has a Potential Money Saver Attached

On the surface, it doesn’t seem like Hulu + Live TV can save you much versus the new YouTube TV price. After all, YouTube TV’s top live TV streaming competitor costs $70 per month itself after price increases of its own.

That $3 per month does add up to $36 per year in savings, but there’s a potential for more savings.

Hulu + Live TV’s $70 subscription also includes access to The Disney Bundle. That means you’ll also receive Disney+, Hulu’s on-demand product and ESPN+ as part of your live TV subscription.

If you’re a YouTube TV subscriber who is already paying for any of these services, you could save an additional $8-$20 per month by making the switch.

For example, a YouTube TV subscriber who also pays for The Disney Bundle (starting at $13 per month) could save as much as $192 per year by moving over to Hulu + Live TV and getting The Disney Bundle included in the monthly charge.

Hulu + Live TV, like YouTube TV, offers access to local channels, many sports channels and has unlimited DVR storage.

You can use Team Clark’s live TV streaming channel tool to determine if your favorite YouTube TV channels are available on Hulu + Live TV.

2. Sling TV Offers Bundle Options and Flexibility

Sling TV doesn’t necessarily match all of the bells and whistles you may be used to with YouTube TV, but it could offer some money-saving solutions.

To offset its lower number of channels on base packages, Sling offers cost savings and flexibility with its streaming packages. You have the option to purchase two different collections of channels for $40 per month (Sling Orange or Sling Blue) or to get them both combined for $55 per month (Sling Orange + Blue).

You also can add on various sports, movies or entertainment bundles to tailor your viewing experience while still keeping your monthly cost under YouTube TV’s new price.

However, you’ll have to make some sacrifices. Sling TV only offers FOX, NBC and ABC in select markets. It does not offer CBS at all. And you will be limited to 50 hours of cloud DVR storage.

Money expert Clark Howard often suggests people should compare the channels available on each service to see if one of the $40 bundles from Sling TV will actually fulfill your household’s streaming appetite.

Moving from YouTube TV to Sling Blue or Sling Orange could save you as much as $396 per year.

3. “Skinny Bundle” Services Offer Live TV For Cheap, but Channels Are Limited

The “next step” down the proverbial live TV streaming ladder could save you some serious money, but only if you can live with the channel sacrifices.

Live TV services like Philo ($25 per month) and Frndly TV (starting at $7 per month) can give you the live TV you crave at a fraction of the price of YouTube TV. And they even have pretty generous cloud DVR policies.

But you’re not going to get any live sports, local channels or news networks. Instead, you’ll get a blend of movies, comedy and entertainment.

Still, a move from YouTube TV to Philo would save you approximately $576 per year. And if Frndly TV could serve as your live TV option, you could save as much as $792 per year.

4. Switch to Video On-Demand Streaming Services

If you’re the type of person who likes to binge-watch the latest popular TV shows and movies, you know that live TV streaming isn’t necessarily where your money is best spent in 2023.

If you care more about this type of content than live sports or news, the YouTube TV price increase may be a sign that it is time to stop paying for live streaming content altogether.

Video streaming services (sometimes referred to as video-on-demand or VOD services) are where the action is at for new, popular original content.

Streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max and Apple TV+ are responsible for some of the most popular TV hits in recent years.

Amazon Prime subscribers receive some great content on Prime Video as a part of that subscription as well.

Meanwhile, Paramount+ (CBS) and Peacock (NBC) offer you a blend of national network content and on-demand libraries for as little as $5 per month.

You even get some live sports from Apple TV+, Peacock and Paramount+ subscriptions.

Considering a year’s worth of YouTube TV now costs $876, you could find your way into annual subscriptions for all seven of the video streaming services I’ve mentioned and likely still save money.

5. Embrace the Increasing Amount of Free Streaming Content Available

What Is a Credit Limit Increase?

Let’s start with the basics.

A credit limit increase is when a credit card issuer raises the maximum amount of credit available to a cardholder. In other words, it is an increase in the amount of money that the cardholder can borrow or spend using the credit card.

A credit limit increase can be granted by the card issuer for various reasons, including an improvement in the cardholder’s credit score or a request by the cardholder for a higher limit.

A higher credit limit can provide cardholders with more purchasing power and flexibility, but it also carries the risk of increased debt if not managed responsibly.

Why Did I Receive a Credit Limit Increase?

You may have received a notice from your credit card issuer about an increase to your credit limit, even if you didn’t ask for one.

Don’t panic. Automatic credit limit increases are possible. And they don’t require a hard inquiry on your credit report, so you shouldn’t see an adverse impact to your credit score.

Since you’re an existing customer, your card issuer can evaluate your financial profile via credit monitoring services and also your behavior with their products.

As a result, they may have identified you as a candidate for a credit limit increase based on a combination of some of the following factors:

Consistent On-time Payments: If you’ve consistently made on-time payments and haven’t missed any payments in the past, your credit card issuer may have taken notice.
Length of Credit History: As you establish a longer credit history with your credit card issuer, they may see you as a more reliable borrower and offer you a credit limit increase.
Good Credit Score: If you have a good credit score and haven’t had any negative credit events, such as late payments or collections, your credit card issuer may consider you a low-risk borrower and increase your credit limit.
Credit Utilization: If you’ve been using a significant portion of your available credit limit but have been paying off your balances in full and on time, your credit card issuer may increase your credit limit to accommodate your spending habits.
Higher Income: If you were prompted to update your income information during a recent visit to the card issuer’s website, you may have unknowingly helped trigger this increase. If you have received a raise or started a new job with a higher salary, this could prompt a credit limit increase.

Chase, which is one of the top credit card issuers in the United States, says that paying your bills on time and paying more than the minimum are two of the factors that could make you a candidate for a credit limit increase.

How To Request a Credit Limit Increase

If your card issuer has not offered you a credit limit increase, you can ask for one anyway.

You can use one of these two methods to request an evaluation of your eligibility:

Call the number listed on the back of your credit card to speak with a customer service representative. They will walk you through the steps required for an evaluation.
Use your card issuer’s online portal or mobile app to request a credit limit increase.

For an example of the latter, I was able to identify the American Express credit limit increase request form by logging into the portal and clicking on the “Account Services” tab.

While each card issuer will have a different process for this, it’s important to note that many of them may ask you to provide up-to-date income information.

Some may also request that a hard inquiry be conducted on your credit report to unearth any potential red flags. Make sure you clarify whether the card issuer plans to do this prior to requesting the increase.

Authorizing a hard inquiry is likely to ding your credit score. And if you have your credit frozen, it may require that you thaw it with the credit bureaus.

Note: Keeping your credit frozen shouldn’t prevent you from receiving a limit increase if a hard inquiry is not required.

Help vs. Hurt? Why a Credit Limit Increase Request Matters

There are two major reasons that requesting a credit limit increase could benefit you, but there are also a couple of ways it could potentially put you at a disadvantage. Timing is everything. Let’s take a look at each.

How It Can Help

Increased Spending Power: The simplest benefit is that you have more access to funds for spending. This could be particularly useful if you’re planning a significant purchase and want to take full advantage of a rewards program and the superior protections that a credit card offers over a debit card.
Credit Utilization Metrics Impact Your Credit Score: Increasing your credit limit can be a quick path to raising your overall credit score. If you get a higher limit and don’t actually use it, this should help lower your overall credit utilization.

How It Can Hurt

Are You Considering a Mortgage Soon?: If you’re looking to buy a home or refinance your existing mortgage in the near future, you may actually want to wait until after you finish that business to request a limit increase. Not only are you potentially exposing yourself to a hard inquiry, but you may also spook mortgage underwriters if you have too much unused available credit.
You Could Inadvertently Decrease Your Limit: Your request for a credit limit reassessment also has a chance to hurt you if it is mistimed. Your card issuer may not like what they see when evaluating your increase request and may instead consider a limit reduction. This is especially a risk if you’ve recently lost your job or missed credit card payments.

Tips for Maintaining Your Credit Limit

Once you have a credit limit that is to your liking, you’ll want to work hard to maintain it and set it up for future increases.

Here are three easy tips for maintaining your existing credit limit:

Pay bills on time. The quickest path to upsetting your credit card issuer is not paying your bills. If you start showing a pattern of late or missed payments, they may quickly lower your limit or may even close your account.
Pay more than the minimum. Running balances on your credit card is never something Team Clark recommends. But if you have to carry a balance, make sure that you are paying more than the minimum balance due. Not only will that help you eat away at the interest you’re accruing, it will also show the card issuer that you’re not in over your head with the existing limit.
Make regular purchases with the card. Team Clark recommends that you set up a recurring subscription to be paid with your credit card each month and then paying it in full. That way you are showing regular activity on the card. If you go months without using your credit card, you may be subject to a credit limit reduction or card cancelation.

The company is accredited by the Better Business Bureau and maintains an A+ grade. On Trustpilot, customer reviews give ItsWorthMore 4.7 out of 5 stars, which earns the company an “Excellent” ranking. Still, if you’ve been researching ItsWorthMore, you’ve probably come across a few negative reviews on both websites. I spent some time reading these reviews to determine the main issues.

I found that most negative reviews mentioned the process taking longer than anticipated and getting less money than initially quoted. Of course, this can happen if your item is in worse condition than you described online.

Regarding the delay in response time, I found that most of these complaints happened in January. ItsWorthMore representatives have responded to these reviews explaining that there is always an influx of shipments right after the holidays. For this reason, I don’t recommend selling your device right at the beginning of the year.

When it came to getting a lower offer than the initial online quote, some customers reported that the device wasn’t accurately assessed. According to the company’s website, if you disagree with the evaluation of your phone, you can ask for a re-inspection. Then, a different representative will evaluate your phone and see if they agree with the initial evaluation or if they can increase the offer amount.

However, with ItsWorthMore, you will get an instant quote online that’s good for 21 days as long as your phone arrives as described. Plus, you can choose from five different payment methods compared to Swappa’s one.

That includes engagement rings, vacations, furniture, caskets and swimming pools. Money expert Clark Howard even recommends that you buy many of those things from Costco, his favorite store.

But what about Costco’s home renovation services? Does that service get Clark’s seal of approval as well?

That’s what a listener of the Clark Howard Podcast recently asked.

What Does Clark Think of Using Costco for a Full Bathroom Renovation?

Should we turn to Costco for home renovations?

That’s what a listener wanted to know on the March 7 podcast episode.

Angie in Texas asked: “We recently moved into a new to us house that was originally built in the 1980s. The former owners did a lot of renovations, but the bathrooms need a lot of work. Neither my husband nor I have ever dealt with home remodels or renovations in the past and aren’t sure where to start.

“What do you think about Costco’s home services? We used them for shutters in our former home and were happy with the service, but we’re still a little unsure for a full renovation.”

Clark is willing to buy almost anything through Costco. But he thinks it’s a bad idea to hire a contractor through any third party, including any of the national home-improvement retailers.

“We have a dog named Kirkland Signature. We did have a dog forever ago named Costco Wholesale. So I really love Costco,” Clark says. “That’s not how I’d pick a contractor to do a full reno of a bathroom in your home.

“We’ve had this problem with the home improvement retailers. People will hire a contractor through them. And then there are all kinds of problems. And the home improvement [company] is like, ‘Who, us? What? Huh?'”

Finding a solution once you’ve hired a contractor and they’ve done a poor job often is a nightmare. So this is a person that you want to interview and hire yourself.

How To Interview and Vet Potential Home Renovation Contractors

When you hire a contractor, Clark says, you want to go old-school and be able to look them in the eyes. Ask them to show you work they’ve done in other homes. Talk to homeowners who have hired them in the past.

“Hiring a renovation contractor, it’s much easier to get into trouble than get out of it. You really take your time checking references and getting quotes from multiple [people],” Clark says.

“You want to ask those references, ‘What happened on budget? What happened on time?’ Those are the two big things we hear complaints about.”

Be clear and precise about what you want, including the quality of the materials. That way the estimate that the contractor gives you entering the job is more likely to be accurate.

Look for someone local and experienced, Clark says, who can give straightforward answers about references and put costs in writing.

How Should You Structure Your Payments To a Contractor?

Because it’s an industry rife with less-than-stellar work, playing the incentive game is smart. You don’t want to pay full freight before your home renovation contractor even opens their toolbox.

“Be very cautious about anybody who wants you to frontload money to them for the work that’s going to take place,” Clark says.

It’s difficult to set an ironclad rule on a maximum up-front percentage to pay a home reno contractor. You’d like to pay at progress milestones, Clark says.

He does suggest a 10% “retainage.” In other words, it’s pretty standard to withhold 10% of the money until it’s clear that the contractor did everything right.

Final Thoughts

Costco offers home renovation. But Clark thinks you should hire contractors yourself. Especially ones that are going to undertake big, expensive jobs inside your house.

Hiring a contractor isn’t a decision you want to rush. Be thorough in your hiring process, Clark says. That includes getting multiple quotes, checking references, looking at examples of past work and getting as much in writing as possible.

Are Credit Union Deposits Insured Up To $250,000?

Silicon Valley Bank, one of the 20 largest banks in the United States, collapsed out of nowhere earlier this month. Two other notable banks failed early in 2023 as well.

The SVB failure created some temporary panic as some Americans wondered whether their money was safe at a bank. The government even moved to create an emergency backstop for SVB and other banks.

The entire process brought a renewed focus on the FDIC and their $250,000 limit at insured banks. But what about credit unions? What protections do account holders at credit unions enjoy?

That’s what a listener of the Clark Howard Podcast recently asked.

Are Credit Union Deposits Insured Like Bank Deposits With the FDIC?

You probably know that FDIC-insured banks protect your deposits up to $250,000. But what about credit unions? Do they get any of the same protections?

That’s what a Clark listener wanted to know on the March 16 podcast episode.

Asked Alan in Florida: “You recommend not keeping more than $250,000 in any one bank. What about credit unions? Are they insured by the government?”

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) does not cover credit unions. But the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) provides $250,000 in deposit insurance for credit unions.

Federal credit unions are required to be NCUA members. Most, but not all, local credit unions are backed by the NCUA. Make sure you choose a credit union with NCUA coverage.

“The NCUA is the federal equivalent of the FDIC for banks. The coverages are essentially identical. It’s the real deal at credit unions,” Clark says.

Clark is a big fan of credit unions. In addition to the fact that they’re a go-to place for good rates for auto loans, credit unions are owned by their own members. Therefore they’re designed to cater to those members rather than to shareholders through maximizing profits.

So you’re more likely to get better customer service at a credit union, especially compared to what Clark calls a “monster mega bank” (Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citi Bank and JPMorgan Chase).

Why Aren’t People Concerned With Deposits at Credit Unions Right Now?

The biggest scrutiny after SVB failed went to super-regional banks, or “mid-sized” banks. More than 50% of deposits at these banks, which sit just below the Big Four in size, are not insured.

How come credit unions didn’t experience the same level of hand-wringing and panic? It’s a question that people have asked Clark again and again this week.

“Credit unions overwhelmingly do accounts for individuals,” Clark says. “Mid-sized banks overwhelmingly serve business accounts. Business accounts are almost always going to be many times larger than $250,000.

“It’s very rare in a credit union that there are deposits on hand that exceed the $250,000 NCUA limit. That’s why there’s been no run on credit unions.”

Final Thoughts

Credit unions may not be insured by the FDIC. But you can still get an equivalent federal $250,000 worth of insurance through the NCUA.

In many ways, Clark prefers credit unions to banks. In terms of the issues that the SVB failure surfaced this week, credit unions are mostly immune because only a small percentage of credit union accounts contain more than $250,000.
