What makes it different?

At Emergence Capital, we are focused on early-stage investments in enterprise software companies. Our strategy is to partner with a select number of high-potential startups each year, allowing us to provide dedicated support to founders who are changing the way the world works. We build deep, long-term relationships, aiming to be the Most Important Partner to our Founders. We also believe in partnering for the long run, holding our positions and board seats for as long as we feel we can add value to the company – in some cases for decades!

What defines your portfolio?

Our portfolio is defined by investments in pioneering enterprise software companies that are leaders in their respective domains. Notable investments include Salesforce, Veeva Systems, Zoom, and Doximity. More recently we’ve made investments in companies like Together.AI, Stackblitz (creators of Bolt.new), Arcee.AI, and several other AI-enabled services companies.

We focus on conviction areas such as Industry Cloud, Deskless Workforce, Deep Collaboration, and AI Coaching Networks, supporting companies that bring specialized solutions to complex business challenges.

Tell us about the current VC landscape in your geography/region.

Based in San Francisco, Emergence Capital operates in the heart of the venture capital ecosystem, but we don’t limit our investing strategy to the Bay Area. SF continues to be a hub for innovation, particularly in enterprise technology and software-as-a-service (SaaS) sectors, but you can find our founders all across the US.

Despite economic fluctuations, there remains a robust appetite for investing in companies that are redefining industries and driving digital transformation. The current landscape emphasizes the importance of specialization and deep industry expertise, aligning with our firm’s focused investment philosophy.

What are the benefits of being an NVCA member?

Membership in the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA) offers significant advantages, including advocacy on critical policy issues, access to industry research, and a platform for networking with peers. The NVCA plays a pivotal role in fostering a vibrant venture ecosystem by addressing regulatory challenges and promoting best practices. For Emergence Capital, being part of this association enhances our ability to stay informed and engaged with the broader venture community, ultimately benefiting our portfolio companies and investors.

What’s ahead for your firm?

Emergence Capital remains committed to investing in early-stage B2B technology companies, with a continued focus on our conviction areas. We also seek to serve not just our portfolio companies but the entire B2B ecosystem. For example we are assembling the industry’s most complete benchmarking report for B2B startups. We’d encourage every investor to ask their portfolio companies to take part in the online survey, open now. What began as a clubhouse for innovators eventually expanded into a first-of-its-kind Venture Collaborative that helps leading corporations invest in ambitious startups to drive their business forward. We are, today, a combination of venture funds, corporate joint ventures, operating partners, ecosystem builders and a fast-growing investment portfolio.

By operating at the intersection of startups and corporate innovation, we’re helping legacy businesses grow and prepare for the future by connecting them to an ecosystem of ventures relevant to their industry. Since 2017, TechNexus Venture Collaborative has invested in over 150 portfolio companies.

These powerful partnerships between large organizations and startups drive innovation and growth by uncovering new opportunities, transforming industries, and achieving long-term success.

We take a different approach to corporate venturing. In addition to strategic capital, we incubate startups, draw insights from the ecosystem, collaborate in a structured way, and build new revenue streams. More than half of our team is focused on post-investment collaboration. We also extend the insight into advantaged investment funds and the development and management of new operating entities.

What defines your portfolio?

With $300 million in AUM, TechNexus invests in a variety of industries where there is strategic alignment with our corporate partners. Our current themes include audio and voice technology, artificial intelligence/machine learning, B2B software, electrification, outdoor recreation, and more.

We’ve helped corporations like RV firm THOR Industries invest in Harbinger Motors. The two companies collaborated to launch the world’s first hybrid RV, which debuted last year. We work with boat maker Brunswick to invest directly into marine startups relevant to its business. And we’ve partnered with the Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate to source technologies capable of preventing wildfires in Hawaii.

Our portfolio consists of startups building innovative solutions that impact the future of how our world moves, works, lives, and thrives.

Tell us about the current VC landscape in your geography/region.

While our impact is global, our home is in Chicago.

Founded nearly 20 years ago, TechNexus launched as Chicago’s first tech hub. And we’ve had our pulse on the Chicago startup ecosystem ever since. We’re located in TeamWorking by TechNexus, a coworking space that’s also home to more than 90 fast-growing Chicago companies.

Chicago is one of the top emerging cities for startups in the world, and has benefited from its close proximity to Fortune 500 companies throughout the Midwest. The city, like many metros, has seen a pullback in venture funding from the pandemic-era highs. However, Chicago startups continue to grow and thrive as the overall innovation ecosystem matures.

What are the benefits of being an NVCA member?

At our core, we’re collaborators. We know the collective experience is greater than the sum of the parts. It’s invaluable being part of the NVCA, which shares our belief in collaboration and empowering the next generation of U.S. companies to fuel the economy of tomorrow.

The increased visibility, networking opportunities, exclusive research, and policy influence being a NVCA member provides have proven beneficial for our firm.

What’s ahead for your firm?

As we continue to invest beyond the check, we’ve launched a content platform to better connect our ecosystem and tell the stories that highlight the corporate-startup connections we facilitate. Through our Venture Impact program, we’re leveraging our entrepreneurial expertise through hands-on advisory, a broad corporate network, and an investor database to deepen relationships with our founders. And with our Catalyst Network, we’re activating our expert advisory network to accelerate support for our 150+ portfolio companies and community.

We’re also building on our nearly decade of venture investing by developing industry-specific funds, exploring larger follow-on funds, and leading small private equity transactions.

We believe the traditional corporate venture capital industry needs an upgrade. And that upgrade is a venture collaborative approach that bridges the gap between corporations and startups. TechNexus works as a trusted partner to both parties, helping create new business opportunities and revenue streams that drive long-term success for both.

The post Member Spotlight: TechNexus Venture Collaborative first appeared on National Venture Capital Association - NVCA.
Member Spotlight: Alpha Partners https://nvca.org/member-spotlight-alpha-partners/ NVCA urn:uuid:e340e549-dabe-f5c4-5fdf-aa5d34dc6fae Thu, 30 Jan 2025 15:38:50 +0000
For this deep dive, we spoke to Steve Brotman, founder and managing partner of Alpha Partners. Founded in 2013, Alpha Partners was built on a bold and unconventional venture capital …

The post Member Spotlight: Alpha Partners first appeared on National Venture Capital Association - NVCA.

For this deep dive, we spoke to Steve Brotman, founder and managing partner of Alpha Partners.

Founded in 2013, Alpha Partners was built on a bold and unconventional venture capital strategy: partnering with VCs instead of competing against them. Nearly four out of five (78%) of all tech companies have VCs with less than $100 million in AUM on their capitalization table. 95% of the time, these VCs don’t pursue follow-on investment rounds beyond the early stage — even though they have a legal right to invest by contract law, state law, and case law. This is mostly due to a lack of capital. By sharing a portion of profits with partner VCs to co-invest in their most promising portfolio companies, Alpha gains access to these growth-stage opportunities, while our more than 1,000 VC partners get carry in those investments that they otherwise would not have received.

I transitioned from early-stage VC to founding Alpha to address this gap in the system. As a 15-year early-stage veteran at Silicon Alley Venture Partners, I frequently encountered situations where the firm was unable to exercise its pro rata rights on follow-on investments. Like many early-stage investors, I found myself unable to continue backing his winners because I had limited capital reserves for growth rounds, which meant having to leave massive upside on the table.

Many of my VC peers faced the same challenge, and there wasn’t a dedicated institutional player addressing this critical need. That’s when Alpha Partners was born. Our mission is to be the friendliest large institutional pro rata right coinvestment partner for VCs, empowering them to stay in the game with their top growth companies.

What defines your portfolio?

At Alpha Partners, we have one guiding mission: invest in top-tier growth companies primed to dominate their categories while safeguarding against downside risks.

Our approach is rooted in a top grading methodology. We score companies numerically on a transparent four point scale. This disciplined evaluation process ensures we identify only the most scalable, rapidly growing companies with strong gross margins, solid competitive moats, and market-leading potential. We are also sector agnostic.

Recent investments exemplify this strategy. We partnered with Santa Barbara Venture Partners to invest in Rad AI’s Series B round, a company that is transforming radiology through AI. In the cybersecurity space, we co-invested alongside Mantis VC in Chainguard’s $140 million Series C round to help the company reach unicorn status while advancing software security solutions. Similarly, we reaffirmed our confidence in Second Front Systems by participating in a second investment round, alongside Artis Ventures, to support their efforts in streamlining the Authority to Operate process for government software vendors.

At Alpha Partners, we don’t just invest—we collaborate with top VCs to amplify our portfolio companies’ success.

Tell us about the current VC landscape in your geography/region.

Through our network of more than 1,000 VC partners, we have extensive reach across major U.S. tech hubs like San Francisco, New York, and Boston, as well as selected regions like Miami, Austin, and Chicago and select international geographies with tech opportunities. We currently see around 25% of all growth-stage deal flow.

The post-pandemic funding rollercoaster — from the funding frenzy of 2020-2021 to the market contraction of 2022-2023 — has now settled, with growth markets showing a more measured return to form.

That said, it’s not without its quirks. There’s a clear “barbell effect” in the current growth-stage market. On one end, we see new market disruptors and AI darlings commanding sky-high valuations, despite some having little user traction or revenue. At the other end, you have a majority of companies experiencing sluggish or modest growth, which are struggling to attract investor interest.

While overall capital deployment at the growth stage has recovered, it’s laser-focused on a select group of high-quality — or at least perceived high-quality — opportunities.

What are the benefits of being an NVCA member?

NVCA offers an exceptional community for investors to connect, collaborate, and shape the future of our industry. And NVCA events consistently gather top-tier VCs, providing the opportunity to strengthen existing relationships and forge new ones.

We also deeply value NVCA’s influence on policy, which directly impacts the health and progress of venture capital and the tech ecosystem as a whole. With 40% of GDP and the stock market driven by tech innovation, up from 2% 40 years ago, tech innovation is now the one area our policy makers have to get right. We strongly believe that whatever one’s political perspective is, having a strong dynamic tech economy where the bulk of economic growth comes from is critical to global growth and addressing massive societal problems where venture- backed companies are often the solution. Venture capital also democratizes opportunity in a way that other sectors of the economy and government do not. Entrepreneurs have few natural advocates, and we are proud to support the NVCA’s efforts.

What’s ahead for your firm?

Alpha Partners is uniquely positioned to thrive in today’s VC landscape.

In recent years, small, early-stage fund managers have faced significant fundraising challenges. These managers make up the backbone of the venture ecosystem, and Alpha Partners has spent over a decade offering them a solution: the ability to further capitalize on their winners, adding an essential revenue stream that returns capital to LPs.

In essence, we make it more lucrative to be an early-stage venture capital fund.

This is particularly important to those firms that often start out relatively small and sub-scale to cover their operating costs. In this way, our efforts support the entire tech ecosystem as early-stage VC underpins almost every material tech opportunity.

Having recently closed an oversubscribed $150 million Fund III and doubled our investment team, we’re now better equipped than ever to tap into more opportunities and support even more early-stage VCs.

Looking ahead, we see Alpha evolving into a larger, full-service fund providing an array of capital and liquidity solutions for early-stage VCs. We also have big plans for a global expansion that we plan to announce soon. But for now, we remain laser-focused on adding the highest quality growth companies to Fund III and continuing to be a trusted partner for VCs’ co-investment opportunities across the ecosystem.

The post Member Spotlight: Alpha Partners first appeared on National Venture Capital Association - NVCA.
Member Spotlight: Runway Growth Capital https://nvca.org/member-spotlight-runway-growth-capital/ NVCA urn:uuid:6d07981b-6856-d105-3011-7de7993fea48 Thu, 05 Dec 2024 14:27:20 +0000
For this deep dive, we spoke to David Spreng, founder and CEO of Runway Growth Capital. Runway Growth Capital (“Runway”) is a venture debt firm specializing in minimally dilutive financing …

The post Member Spotlight: Runway Growth Capital first appeared on National Venture Capital Association - NVCA.

For this deep dive, we spoke to David Spreng, founder and CEO of Runway Growth Capital.

Runway Growth Capital (“Runway”) is a venture debt firm specializing in minimally dilutive financing for late and growth-stage companies. We typically lend to companies considered late-stage (Series C and later) to allow early investors and management to avoid the dilution of continuous equity raises. To date, our portfolio companies average 13 years old and generate around $50 million in revenue, with a clear path to profitability. Unlike lenders targeting early-stage startups, we focus on partnering with high-quality, late-stage companies, providing them with the capital, knowledge, and network needed to navigate both successes and challenges.

We support a wide range of innovative companies in technology, life sciences/healthcare, and select consumer product and service industries. Our venture debt is minimally dilutive, allowing founders and early investors to preserve more ownership compared to traditional equity financing. We believe this distinctive approach positions Runway not just as a lender, but as a strategic partner committed to the growth and success of sophisticated, forward-thinking businesses.

Overall, we develop tight-knit relationships based on trust, transparency, and communication. It’s this authentic collaboration that is the foundation of a true partnership –and why it is critical for borrowers to have a trusted partner as a lender. Having a steady hand as well as the patience to work through the inevitable bumps in the road is what we believe really separates the “founder-friendly” investors from the “not-so founder-friendly” investors.

What defines your portfolio?

Our borrowers are what we believe to be some of the highest quality late-stage companies within the venture ecosystem. We collaborate with management teams across various industries, including technology (SaaS, fintech, enterprise tech, edtech, AI, machine learning, and other related tech-enabled industries), life sciences/healthcare (biotech & biopharma, medical devices, other specialties), and select consumer products and services (including internet retail and financial services). This diverse sector engagement highlights our dedication to providing tailored financial support during critical growth stages, ensuring that our partners have the resources they need to succeed.

Tell us about the current VC landscape in your geography/region.

Runway focuses on late and growth-stage companies with a clear path to profitability in technology, life sciences/healthcare and select consumer product and service industries (rather than any specific geography or region). The venture landscape across these verticals has experienced significant shifts in the past few years, which reflect broader changes in the startup ecosystem.

The technology sector, while still a major focus for VC investment, has faced some recalibration. Investors are becoming more cautious, pulling back from the hyperactive funding cycles of previous years. In our view, this shift is partly due to a reevaluation of AI and other emerging technologies, as well as a general reassessment of risk and reward expectations. Nonetheless, technology companies with strong fundamentals and clear paths to profitability continue to secure significant funding.

In life sciences/healthcare, we’ve seen a surge in investment driven by advancements in biotech and healthcare technologies. Companies with strong clinical pipelines and innovative solutions are attracting substantial funding, as investors recognize the potential for high returns and societal impact. Despite some economic headwinds, the life sciences and healthcare sectors remain robust, with a steady influx of capital supporting groundbreaking research and development.

In the consumer sector, there has been a notable rise in investment activity, particularly for companies that demonstrate resilience and adaptability in changing market conditions. Businesses that have successfully navigated the challenges of the past few years are showing strong growth potential and profitability.

In our opinion, the overall market is currently focusing on sustainable growth and profitability, and in this environment specifically, we expect companies to continue to seek minimally dilutive capital to extend runway and supplement equity. Runway’s strategy aligns with these trends, as we continue to support late-stage companies in tech, life sciences/healthcare and consumer sectors that exhibit strong performance in these verticals.

What are the benefits of being an NVCA member?

Being a member of the NVCA provides numerous benefits, particularly in terms of advocacy, networking, and education.

First and foremost, NVCA plays a crucial role in representing the interests of the venture capital community in Washington, D.C. The association advocates for policies that support entrepreneurship and encourage innovation, which are critical as we navigate complex regulatory and economic environments. This advocacy ensures that the interests of venture firms and the companies they invest in are considered in policy making.

Networking is another significant benefit. What makes it different?

National Grid Partners is the utility industry’s only corporate venture investor in Silicon Valley. Our parent company, National Grid, is one of the world’s largest publicly traded energy utilities. National Grid Partners has been named the most active utility investor by Bloomberg NEF, with more than $450 million deployed across 46 companies and four specialty VC funds; seven successful exits since our founding in 2018; and an industry leading percentage of portfolio unicorns. We provide venture capital, business development support and access to more than 120 other utility companies around the world through our NextGrid Alliance.

What defines your portfolio?

We invest in emerging technology companies at the intersection of IT and energy for a smarter and more renewable future. We focus on technologies that will help create the electric networks of the future; engage National Grid’s customers; boost operational efficiency; and help decarbonize fossil fuel networks. We call these our Four Pillars, and they guide our investment decision-making.

Tell us about the current VC landscape in your geography/region.

Climate funding has slowed, as has all venture funding. At the same time, our mission – enabling a clean, fair and affordable energy future – isn’t going away; we believe strongly that startups and incumbent energy companies need each other to help our planet reach its net zero goals. And we’re actively looking to invest in startups that can help address those climate challenges – while making the energy system robust enough to handle a massive new demand for electricity, driven in large part by new technologies like AI and EVs.

What are the benefits of being an NVCA member?

Being an NVCA member has opened doors for us to connect and collaborate with other venture investors, both at NVCA events and well after. These events are not just great networking opportunities, but they provide useful information from other industry experts on topics like brand building and the current VC landscape. And as an energy transition CVC, being an NVCA member helps raise awareness that this is an area that’s investable and that solves the decarbonization problem.

What’s ahead for your firm?

National Grid Partners earlier this year announced a new leadership structure and refreshed investment focus on the Four Pillars to accelerate progress toward net zero and scale innovation across global energy networks. More recently, we announced a trio of new deals that took us past 50 portfolio investments and $450M deployed since our 2018 launch. We’re looking forward to more new investments this year while continuing to support our current portfolio companies with follow-on funding in this tight environment.

The post Member Spotlight: National Grid Partners first appeared on National Venture Capital Association - NVCA.
Building Better: Impact Venture Capital and Cornomi https://nvca.org/building-better-impact-venture-capital-and-cornomi/ NVCA urn:uuid:d8a895a8-1c1e-0fbf-24e5-dd5e48f8ce92 Thu, 19 Sep 2024 19:03:51 +0000
Welcome to the NVCA Blog series, Building Better, where we celebrate the dynamic relationship between our VC members and their innovative portfolio companies around the nation. For today’s Building Better, we spoke to Jack Crawford of Impact Venture Capital & Gordie Campbell of Cornami. Learn about their partnership in the Q&A below!

Impact Venture Capital

Give us some background on your firm: How did the firm start, what is your mission and how does the firm strive to meet its goals?

Impact Venture Capital was launched in 2016 by our Founding General Partners, Eric Ball and Jack Crawford. Eric and Jack met through the Kauffman Fellows program and worked closely together managing Oracle’s venture portfolio. Following more than 100 acquisitions by Oracle and a venture portfolio including 180 startup companies, the two discovered how valuable the insights of a large corporate investor and acquirer can have on mitigating the risk of seed stage investments and accelerating their timelines to acquisition.

Like many great venture firms, Impact Venture Capital invests in seed-stage AI companies focused on security, finance, and digital health. However, Jack and Eric wanted to take full advantage of everything corporate venture groups and corporate M&A teams had to offer. To that end, Impact Venture Capital differentiates itself through deep collaboration with a broad network of corporate investors. These corporate partners serve as market experts, customers, and co-investors for our portfolio companies. We believe we benefit our corporate investors by acting like scouts for deals strategically relevant by stage and industry sector. We have developed an active working relationship with more than 200 corporate investors. The market insights provided by these corporate investors has elevated our investing IQ at the seed level, enhanced our selection process, mitigated the risk of seed investments, and accelerated the path of our portfolio companies to successful exits.

What does your firm look for in a partner when choosing to invest in a portfolio company? What does the firm value? What do you especially value in the Cornami’s team?

Like all good investors, we’re looking for exceptionally gifted founders solving incredibly important problems. We value industry experience highly and are looking for a credible argument that a startup’s market is at an important inflection point. Naturally, we care deeply about startups that are strategically relevant to the corporate investors we work with.

Cornami was a clear choice for us. Gordie Campbell and Wally Rhines bring decades of chip industry experience, with multiple successful exits totaling $5 billion. Their AI chips are crucial for many top corporations, including our co-investors: Applied Materials, Qualcomm, Softbank, and more. These founders have the intelligence, experience, vision, and urgency to succeed, along with strong listening and sales skills.

How does Impact Venture Capital support its portfolio companies? How does it help entrepreneurs grow and advance the VC industry?

Strategic guidance, curated introductions, and capital are the key ways in which we find ourselves supporting our portfolio companies. At Cornami, we covered payroll with timely investments in the early days, helped recruit the current CEO and some key board members, guided the company toward the fully homomorphic encryption market to support product-market fit, and led two of the four rounds of funding so they could assemble $100M+ of follow-on capital. Our level of activity includes a standard weekly call with the CEO and the founder regarding how we can best help with ideas and connections. In Cornami’s situation, it’s been amazing to see the company track from an idea to 60+ issued patents to a team of 50+ employees on their path to creating an AI chip that will revolutionize the industry over the next 12 months.

Q&A with Cornami

What is the mission of your company and how did you start?

Provide the first absolute cybersecurity for user information in the cloud, large language models and blockchain transactions. Cornami, named for a “tsunami of cores”, began by developing unique compiler software to parallelize any computer program or data. A chip architecture based upon this software was developed using a “share nothing” architecture so that the performance of computing applications would increase as the number of compute cores per chip and the number of chips in a computer system increased. As a result, computation can be performed upon data while it remains encrypted. Performance is comparable to the same computation on unencrypted data but, with Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE), no one but the user has a key and the computer program remains encrypted at all times with a secure quantum-proof form of encryption, even during computation.

Where and how is your company looking to grow into the next 5 years?

Most users of computers would prefer the security of FHE that DARPA refers to as “The Holy Grail of Cybersecurity” if the cost is nearly the same as traditional forms of security. This requires acceleration of computing by about one million times that of a typical Intel server. Cornami expects about half of the $100B annual semiconductor market for servers to add this capability within the next five years by purchasing servers and add-in cards from Cornami. Creators and users of large language models (LLMs) currently have to secure their own proprietary “fine tuning” data behind their own firewalls because of the sensitivity of that information. With FHE, LLMs can be made available in the cloud where encrypted queries can be made to the encrypted model and plaintext data is never exposed.

What problem is your company trying to solve?

Provide the ability for owners of valuable information to share it (for a price) with others while never divulging the actual data. With this capability, Cornami will revolutionize generative AI with secure LLMs that can be hosted in the cloud without exposing proprietary information.

How has Impact Venture Capital impacted your company’s future for the better?

Impact Venture Capital, under Jack Crawford, was the first VC firm to fund the initial innovations at Cornami. Impact has remained a key source of funding and has provided advice, help in bringing other investors to Cornami, connections with future customers and encouragement. Cornami would not exist today if we had not connected with Impact Venture Capital.

The post Building Better: Impact Venture Capital and Cornomi first appeared on National Venture Capital Association - NVCA.
Member Spotlight: Impact Venture Capital https://nvca.org/member-spotlight-impact-venture-capital/ NVCA urn:uuid:237929f8-af69-164f-ce85-8e3515475940 Thu, 29 Aug 2024 13:41:28 +0000
For this deep dive, we spoke to Jack Crawford, Founding General Partner of Impact Venture Capital. Our investment experience in AI since our first fund in 2016 makes us a first mover. Following our historical success in managing the venture portfolio for Oracle, we realized the importance of AI for corporations and began gathering market insights from our broad network of relationships with corporate venture groups and corporate M&A teams. Like the internet transforming every business and consumer segment, our view is that AI is rapidly evolving as the most significant innovation of our lifetime with advancements in machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision.

Being operators prior to Impact Venture Capital with corporate careers in the tech space at Oracle, Sprint, AT&T, NTT Communications, and NetApp makes us one of the most experienced teams in collaborations with corporate investors. Our portfolio from our first two funds was built by identifying visionary founders deploying AI technology in key industries like security, finance, and digital health.

We primarily differentiate our firm through our deep collaboration with a broad network of corporate investors who have made over $500M of follow-on investments in our portfolio companies. These corporate investors serve as research partners, customers, and potential acquirers for our portfolio companies. By acting like scouts for deals strategically relevant by stage and industry sector, we have developed active working relationships with more than 100 corporate investors. The market insights provided by these corporate investors have elevated our investing IQ at the seed level by enhancing our investment selection process, mitigating the risk of seed investments, and accelerating the path of our portfolio companies to successful exits.

What defines your portfolio?

AI applied to security, finance, and digital health defines our portfolio with a particular focus on deep tech and software platforms. As AI applications are created with a focus on data management, cybersecurity, and process automation, we find smart passionate founders making bold moves to create market-leading companies.

We support our portfolio companies in raising subsequent rounds of funding from corporate venture groups as the key element of our investment strategy. Alongside corporate co-investors like Intel, Zoom, Qualcomm, Applied Materials, SK Hynix, Yamaha, Kubota, and many others, we are working to add valuable market insight, management and board talent, and customers in support of our portfolio companies.

Our access to corporate investors empowers startups with resources for product development, accelerates their growth with new customers, and helps take advantage of market tailwinds toward an eventual exit while avoiding some of the obstacles in otherwise challenging industries.

Tell us about the current VC landscape in your geography/region.

With Impact Venture Capital team members in California and New York, we believe these two ecosystems are leading the way with innovations in AI. Given the combination of innovation from California, financial markets of New York, and world class universities in both states, we expect these venture ecosystems to continue thriving.

Although our geographic focus includes companies located anywhere in the US, we are particularly excited about the innovation economy in Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, and New York City. Since our active collaboration with corporate investors is not bound by geography, we have the flexibility to invest in relevant startups wherever they might be, and by honing in on stage and industry relevant deals, our corporate partners can help provide insights on where best to invest.

What are the benefits of being an NVCA member?

We firmly believe in the positive global impact of the US venture capital industry. The NVCA has assembled the most significant and influential network of venture capital firms and corporate investors in the world in a collaborative community. By investing and collaborating alongside the more than 50 corporate venture groups who are NVCA members into smart entrepreneurs, we can help build incredibly valuable companies that will solve some of the biggest challenges the world faces today.

Being part of a network of corporate and venture capital peers who believe in this effort, share best practices, and hold each other to a high level of venture investment standards is a no-brainer. Since joining the NVCA in 2016, our ability to collaborate and help guide policy in support of capital formation and innovation in the US has been critical for all key stakeholders in the venture ecosystem.

What’s ahead for your firm?

After a recent initial close of Impact Venture Capital’s “Fund III”, we’ve evolved from our initial launch to become a powerhouse of seasoned, well-connected seed investors, boasting one of the most expansive and engaged corporate investor networks in the industry. We continue to benchmark the best-practices of top VC firms with a focus on systematic sourcing and selection, curated introductions to customers and investors, and the identification of exit paths at each stage of the company.

Our collaborations with corporate investors will continue to expand including our “Impact TV” corporate venture video series, our “CVC Squads” focus groups, and “Knowledge Drop” learning sessions. Finally, we are committed to deepening our active collaborations with the global corporate network of investors within the Kauffman Fellows group and engaging with the NVCA’s exclusive “CVC Working Group” sessions to drive forward innovative investment strategies and industry leadership.

The post Member Spotlight: Impact Venture Capital first appeared on National Venture Capital Association - NVCA.
Member Spotlight: At One Ventures https://nvca.org/member-spotlight-at-one-ventures/ NVCA urn:uuid:e158f54a-8b8e-2d42-b631-6d325de4d218 Thu, 15 Aug 2024 13:32:38 +0000
For this deep dive, we spoke to Tom Chi, Founder and Managing Partner. What makes it different?

At One Ventures finds, funds, and grows companies that are using disruptive deep tech to upend the unit economics of established industries while dramatically reducing their planetary footprint. We currently manage $525M across two funds.

Unlike other climate venture funds, we do not consider carbon emissions as our only impact metric. We invest in companies that catalyze a new restorative and generative relationship with nature, which includes water, soil and biodiversity.

Our investment team is highly technical, with a depth of expertise across the physical sciences, engineering, manufacturing, IP and finance. As a result the level of diligence we are able to achieve as a group gives us an astounding amount of confidence in the deals we do execute, and we lead 90% of our first placements.

What defines your portfolio?

Our portfolio contains the types of breakthrough technologies that you might read about in the media and think: This changes everything.

We backed the first USDA-approved vaccine for honeybees, which pollinate one-third of the food we eat, including blueberries, broccoli, apples and almonds. By protecting them from disease, Dalan Animal Health creates unique value for the American agricultural economy.

You may also have heard of Colossal Biosciences, the de-extinction company that is bringing back the wooly mammoth, the Tasmanian tiger and the dodo bird. The work they are doing has financial and environmental implications far beyond these species.

Ascend Elements is an advanced materials company that recovers 98% of the critical metals in used lithium-ion batteries and reintegrates them directly into EV batteries. Since we first invested in them they have raised over $700M and are in full production. (See the Building Better profile.)

Overall, our portfolio is full of “invention catalysts” which are technologies that not only improve upon the domain of the invention itself, but also have the potential to ripple-change entire systems of production and use. It is technology that makes us reimagine what is possible for living on a healthy planet.

Tell us about the current VC landscape in your geography/region.

There’s been an acceleration of capital into climate technology since 2020, but many VCs started with the assumption that they can “enterprise SaaS” their way through this problem. It’s enticing, because software is easy (on the wallet). You don’t have the kind of capital intensity that physical businesses require. Investors that either come with a background in hardware or get up to speed on it quickly are far better positioned to succeed in this space.

Now, we need improvements in the rest of the ecosystem around debt and financing for growth-stage companies, and we have to get more creative around capital for FOAK manufacturing facilities.

Given all that, there is still a macro-trend of capital allocations to climate, and we hope for that to continue. We believe that when these first-return profiles come through, it will be an influential moment for the way the next few years go. If LPs get better or comparable returns, it’s going to shift the thinking around climate tech investments. If we can perform or even better, outperform, it will generate energy and excitement in the private markets for a decade and set up the sector for the next cycle.

What are the benefits of being an NVCA member?

We’re focused on doing the best for our entrepreneurs, and we continuously use NVCA venture standards to build and strengthen trust with our interactions and transactions with our portfolio companies. The access to trusted best practices and educational resources has accelerated upskilling within our own team.

We’re also thankful for the work they are doing to expand access to under-represented groups and encourage diversity practices within our industry. Our own team is 70% either female, BIPOC or both. Within our portfolio, 40% of our companies are led by under-represented founders. It’s not just about demographics, it’s diversity of thought. Investing in founders coming from different backgrounds globally provides a multi-faceted and in-depth understanding of problems, in order to find tangible solutions.

What’s ahead for your firm?

At One Ventures is already known for portfolio support, with dedicated in-house resources for talent, marketing, patent strategy, and manufacturing and operations. We’ll continue to strengthen our platform team to support founders in the ways they need most. Right now we’re particularly focused on helping companies scale up their manufacturing, achieve superior unit economics, and get those commercial deals so they can successfully displace existing brownfield approaches.

It’s going to take a lot of effort to get to a point where humanity is a net positive to nature. Our goal is to help humanity 2-500 years out. We’re here for the long journey, even if it exceeds our lifetime.

The post Member Spotlight: At One Ventures first appeared on National Venture Capital Association - NVCA.
Personal Finance Tips You Were Never Taught—but Need to Know https://searchfundaccelerator.tumblr.com/post/181801373422 Search Fund Accelerator urn:uuid:4b3e2ab6-d95e-9ef5-a7bb-582bdf4315ae Mon, 07 Jan 2019 10:06:31 +0000

We asked half a dozen personal finance experts the best tips they could share that most people are never taught. Here are the money-saving and wealth-creating tips they revealed exclusively for Reader’s Digest.

Take a day to think about large purchases to avoid impulse buys

“Delaying your purchases for a day gives you time to think about whether or not you really need the items, and it curbs regrettable impulse buys,” advises Marc Diana, CEO of MoneyTips. “Sale items may be an exception to this rule, but even then, question how badly you need the item compared to saving or investing the money you would use to purchase it. When times are tough, and you’re cutting expenses, would you rather have a rarely worn $300 pair of shoes in your closet or $300 cash?” Don’t miss other habits of people great at saving money.

Budgets are freeing, not constricting

Says financial educator Tiffany Aliche, “Keeping a budget allows you to say yes to your goals in a strategic way. If you have a budget, you can save for the vacation, house, or car you want to get. You can look at it as ‘No McDonald’s,’ but I see it as ‘Yes to a trip to Paris.’ A budget is not a NO plan, but a YES plan with actual steps towards achieving your goals.” Learn how to make a budget.

Budget with the 50/20/30 rule

Lynn Toomey, co-founder of Your Retirement Advisor, suggests following this easy budgeting rule:

Use 50 percent of your income for non-discretionary necessities like food, rent/house payment, utilities, and transportation.

Put aside 20 percent of your income for an emergency fund (three to six months’ salary is a good target), retirement, savings, and to pay off any debts.

Use 30 percent of your income for discretionary (non-essential) spending such as entertainment, vacation, and gifts.

Read More: Personal Finance Tips You Were Never Taught—but Need to Know

.@JPMorgan on Xi Jinping: 'This speech did not represent a major shift in Chinese policy' http://money.cnn.com/2018/04/09/news/economy/china-xi-jinping-economy-trade/index.html … by @jethromullen https://twitter.com/CNNMoneyInvest/status/983689806680133632 Twitter Search / CNNMoneyInvest urn:uuid:790fecce-7914-e817-f6ad-b51b5ed530e8 Tue, 10 Apr 2018 12:55:00 +0000
. @JPMorgan on Xi Jinping: 'This speech did not represent a major shift in Chinese policy' http://money.cnn.com/2018/04/09/news/economy/china-xi-jinping-economy-trade/index.html … by @jethromullen
Breaking: #Volkswagen is considering a surprise management shakeup http://money.cnn.com/2018/04/10/investing/volkswagen-ceo-matthias-mueller/index.html … by @IvanaKottasova https://twitter.com/CNNMoneyInvest/status/983688799304679424 Twitter Search / CNNMoneyInvest urn:uuid:faf1a4c3-887a-7443-20c1-4d3df31c13ff Tue, 10 Apr 2018 12:51:00 +0000
Breaking: #Volkswagen is considering a surprise management shakeup http://money.cnn.com/2018/04/10/investing/volkswagen-ceo-matthias-mueller/index.html … by @IvanaKottasova
#Stocks poised to pop at this morning's opening bell.
